Four New Releases Give a Glimpse of ‘Doctor Who’ History

With the latest season of ‘Doctor Who‘ ending, you’ll have the rest of the summer to catch up on your ‘Who’ history. If you’re a purist, the best way to do that is to go back to the vaults and watch the show.

BBC America just released four more volumes, covering the First Doctor (William Hartnell, 1963-1966), the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee, 1970-1974), and the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker, 1974-1981).

More than two thirds of the episodes are available on DVD, and the BBC plans to eventually release everything it has. Mind you, some of the earliest episodes from the ’60s and ’70s were erased to make way for newer programs, but bits of those turn up here and there.

The most recent additions give a decent overview of three of the first four Doctors, and the first two decades of the show. The BBC releases the older episodes in collections representing story arcs, rather than by season, the way we’re most used to seeing TV on DVD. They can be a bit pricey, but you can get a bunch of them through Netflix, and sometimes, even the local library.

‘The Space Museum’ and ‘The Chase’
This is a three-disc set with two full story arcs, plus a lot of fine extras. In ‘The Space Museum’ the Doctor and his companions (there were always companions) find themselves preserved in a museum, wondering whether they should fight their way out. There’s a lot of humor here, and the cheesy costumes and uneven acting are typical of the production at its start. Some of the extras on the DVDs feature evaluations of the episodes, and many, like ‘Defending the Museum’ here, are pretty frank discussing the shortcomings.

You also get ‘The Chase,’ an early appearance by the Daleks, who had already been established as the Doctor’s greatest enemy. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this, and the extras that touch on monster design, is how little the Daleks have changed in more than 45 years of Doctor Who. They still have the bulky, upside-down garbage can with a plunger hanging off a dome head, and they have retained the voice – “Exterminate!” The main difference is that the versions the Eleventh Doctor faces have gotten shiny new multi-colored iPod skins.

‘The Time Monster’
The Doctor battles The Master, who is attempting to gain control of time while undercover at a lab in Cambridge University. This episode also gives some insight into the mystery of Atlantis (a crack in time, “between now… and now”). The Master figured prominently into ‘The End of Time,’ the episodes that led to the end of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor and made way for Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor.

As always, The Master is power mad and brilliant, and a good foil for the Doctor. The production and writing of this arc are a step up from the previous seasons – this looks more like the classic series fans are most familiar with. Science nerds will enjoy the DVD extra explaining the science behind ‘The Time Monster’ and the concept of interstitial time with Professor Jim Al Khalili.

‘Underworld’
The Doctor aids a race called the Minyans who are on a quest to find a new home, at drift in space after their planet was destroyed. Of course, the Time Lords tried to help them in the distant past, when the Minyans mistook them for gods. At least one Minyan blames the Time Lords for the destruction of the planet.

A great self-aware sense of humor in this arc, something fans of Smith and Tennant will enjoy. One of the Minyans asks the Doctor if he has any idea how painful it is to regenerate. He replies he’s been through it a couple of times, and didn’t find it pleasant. And when the Doctor introduces himself by name, that same Minyan asks, “Of medicine?” “Oh, many things,” the Doctor says offhandedly.

You also get to see the dog-like K-9, who had his own spinoff series at one point. You can see K-9 again putting up a valiant fight in ‘School Reunion,’ season two, episode three of the modern series.

‘The Horns of Nimon’
The TARDIS is a fickle machine, whether it’s the Eleventh Doctor working the antique knobs of the Fourth Doctor trying to make sense of a giant instruction manual. The Doctor has to struggle with getting the TARDIS up and running while trying to prevent the parasitic Nimon from securing their latest sacrifices and moving on to destroy other worlds. In fact, the Doctor does a lot of fixing in this story. And there is an appearance by the sonic screwdriver.

This is Baker’s second to last story in his second to last season, and the budget constraints once again show in some scenes, especially when an asteroid is heading straight for the TARDIS and the mask design of the Nimon. Much paper mache was constructed.

Some great detail in the extras, including a featurette on ‘Doctor Who’ and the children’s show ‘Blue Peter,’ an interview with writer Anthony Read, and even some music demos from Peter Howell. Read talks about ‘Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ writer Douglas Adams’ involvement with the show, and the idea that Romana, the Doctor’s companion in this arc, was his intellectual equal.

Doctor Who – No More Regenerations?

After Matt Smith’s first year in the titular role of Doctor Who (a very good one at that, in my opinion), there were rumors that, like Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, he might be leaving the show just a series after he started. Various reasons were given, including Smith’s desire to move to America and focus on films, or that ratings for “The Big Bang,” were bad enough to send him packing.

Steven Moffat, Doctor Who’s current showrunner, has dismissed those rumors. The question of a regeneration was posed to him by BBC News after Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of Moffat’s miniseries Sherlock, didn’t deny an inquiry of whether or not he would be the Doctor in his upcoming recurring role in the series. “Maybe,” Cumberbatch replied simply, and the rumor mill began to churn.

Moffat has decided to put a stop to the rumors of Cumberbatch — or anyone — replacing Smith. “There is no vacancy,” Moffat stated, putting at ease the minds of Smith fans everywhere. “Matt Smith is the Doctor and he’s been an astonishing success and – who knows – maybe he’ll never regenerate again.”

Doctor Who Season 5 Episode 12 ‘The Pandorica Opens’ Recap

This episode accomplished something pretty major for Matt Smith’s incarnation of the Doctor. I won’t go into what until after the jump for fear that the Spoiler Police will clap me in irons, but the image along with this article is a pretty big clue.

This episode highlighted one of Moffat’s greatest strengths as a writer: the ability to weave an interconnected story using plot points that viewers would dismiss as unimportant. As with RTD before him, the penultimate episode of the season brings together all the hints we’ve seen before and the last episode will be their resolution.

It must be a logistical nightmare to have an episode that occurs after the end of the universe like the next in the series, but ‘Doctor Who’ has done it before and it’s the sort of thing Moffat excels at. It’s one of the reasons I love this show.

The Doctor’s enemies have had alliances before, but never to this degree. Everyone seemed represented except for the renegade Time Lords he has fought (most notably the Master. Where was he? Perhaps he was the voice. But I digress … ). It should be no surprise that all of them have developed technology to communicate through time and space via the cracks. The Pandorica itself was presumably set up by the Cybermen with instructional help from the other races. Apparently the only reason we didn’t see many of those other races mentioned by the Doctor was the limitations of the BBC wardrobe department (it would have been nice to see the Chelonians).

The major accomplishment of this episode that I mentioned before is that it allowed Matt Smith’s Doctor to have fought with all of his non-Time Lord enemies. Moffat won’t feel obligated to throw in a Cybermen episode or a Sontaran episode because they’ve been covered. It gives him more creative freedom for future seasons. That’s utterly brilliant.

Another revelation was that Amy’s thoughts were apparently directing the enemy in their plan. This entire incident reeks of a mastermind behind it, manipulating the Daleks, Cybermen and everyone else. Who destroyed the TARDIS? Who said beforehand that “silence will fall”? I have some ideas (see above), but let’s see where Moffat takes it.

When the Doctor was describing the “prisoner” in the Pandorica as a warrior and trickster, I thought to myself how apt a description that was of the Doctor himself. Little did I know …

In case it wasn’t mentioned, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were at the top of their acting game this time around. Kudos to all.

And now, the extra-nerdy bits …

‘Doctor Who‘ has always had subtle nods to its own long history when it was relaunched in 2005 and tonight was no exception. Under River’s message on the cliff face were the letters Theta and Sigma. Theta Sigma was the Doctor’s nickname in school, which was established during the Tom Baker era of the show.

Unlike River’s statement, not all of the races that were conspiring against the Doctor actually hate him. The Doctor is actually a noble in Draconia. However, time is wibbly-wobbly and timey-wimey and its possible that the Draconians had their own motivations for helping imprison the Doctor.

Doctor Who – Episode 6.00 – Michael Gambon To Guest Star

With the sound of Doctor Who Season 5 finale “The Big Bang” still ringing in our ears, the BBC isn’t resting on its laurels, revealing first details of the show’s 2010 Christmas Special.

While the episode’s title is still under wraps, the BBC is promising a clever twist on festive classic A Christmas Carol, with time-travelling newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) joining Matt Smith’s Doctor alongside special guests Michael Gambon and opera singer Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role.

With filming for the Christmas special starting today, showrunner Steven Moffat enthused, “Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically.”

There’s no confirmed air date for the Doctor Who Christmas Special as yet, but if recent years are any indication, expect to be settling down in front of the TV post-turkey and pud on Christmas Day, in the UK at least.

‘Doctor Who’ Season 5 Episode 11 ‘The Lodger’ Recap

After the disappointing ‘Vincent and the Doctor’ two weeks ago, it was nice to see the show return to greatness (or at least goodness) with an episode written by Gareth Roberts, who has written ‘Doctor Who’ for several mediums including television, audio, novels and comics. This episode is an adaptation of one of his comics which originally starred the David Tennant Doctor with Rose and Mickey.

In fact, some of the best episodes of the new series have been adapted from ‘Doctor Who’ stories in other media. The first season ‘Dalek’ episode was adapted from one of the Big Finish audios (although the adaptation ending up being very different from its originator) and the stories ‘Human Nature’ and ‘Family of Blood’ from the third season were adapted from one of the Virgin New Adventures books.

But I digress …
This episode represented one of those episodes that was intended to be “low cost” so the series could save some money for the season finale. As the “low cost” episode, it was better written then most of the ones from the Russell T. Davies era.

It was this episode more than any of the previous that gave insight into the character of Matt Smith’s Doctor. The viewer gets to see how alien the character actually is. It was somewhat out of character for the Doctor to be unfamiliar with so many Earth customs given how many times he’s visited the planet, but he’s a new version and his brain did seem a bit frazzled since he took on the role. Of course, he still shows knowledge about the human condition with his mastery of Craig’s job and his subtle encouragement of the Craig/Sophie relationship.

The plot itself was fairly simple. The Doctor has to pose as a human (without actually becoming human as in ‘Human Nature’) in order to investigate strange time-related shenanigans that is interfering with his TARDIS. To do this, he takes a room with a fellow named Craig in a flat in Colchester which is the source of the interference. Naturally, aliens are involved and the good guys win in the end. This episode was more about character than plot.

Craig himself was an interesting character that is easy to relate to. He reminded me a bit of the character of Elton from ‘Love & Monsters.’

If memory serves, this is the first Doctor to appear naked on screen in quite some time. Jon Pertwee got caught in a shower in his premiere episode way back when and Christopher Eccleston was shirtless once, but it has been some time. Of course, the Doctor has never played football (or soccer, whatever you wish to call it) on screen before. Cricket, perhaps, but never football.

Naturally, there is a crack in time at the episode’s end. Plus Amy discovers Rory’s engagement ring. They must keep the season story arc going.

This was more of a fun, lighthearted episode than the ones previous. It also didn’t have much shared screen time between the Doctor and Amy. But it did give us tremendous insight into the 11th Doctor’s character, and that’s a good thing.

Doctor Who – Is Matt Smith Leaving?

Here in the UK Betting Companies have suddenly dropped the odds ont he actor leaving from 6/1 to 9/2. That’s quite a drop in terms of odds, the bookies don’t normally get things wrong.

David Morrissey, who appeared in the 2008 Who Christmas special, is favourite to replace him at 4/1.
