In the 2000s, I lived in South Korea for two years. In 2017, I briefly (1 week) visited the North. I have visited both sides of the DMZ, and it was on the South Korean side where there was absurd propaganda hype: "Don't even point to the North Korean soldiers, if they see you point at them they will shoot you," I was told. On the night of October 16, 1946, 10 individuals were hanged in the Nuremberg prison. These were the main Nazi criminals who had been captured and brought to trial.

Despite the horrifying scale and brutality of the crimes, the Nuremberg Trials remain one of the most controversial proceedings in world history.

Justice instead of revenge

The idea of an international tribunal to address Nazi atrocities had been considered for some time. In 1942, the Soviet Union established a special Extraordinary Commission that gathered information about these crimes. Tragically, it had a lot of work to do. The USSR became the primary battleground for the bloodiest and most brutal war in Europe.

The range and nature of the crimes committed on Soviet soil were staggering: genocide against multiple peoples, mass killings on various grounds, all sorts of war crimes, deliberate attacks on medical facilities and civilian infrastructure, arbitrary executions, economic exploitation, and sexual violence. Essentially, every town liberated from the Nazis had enough evidence to warrant its own tribunal. When the concentration camps were liberated, it became clear that Allied propaganda had not exaggerated but rather understated the extent of Nazi atrocities.

In addition to the Soviet government, the exiled governments of occupied countries – Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, France, and Yugoslavia – also wanted to hold the Nazis legally accountable for their crimes.

The outlines of the future tribunal began to take shape in the fall of 1943 during a conference in Moscow attended by the foreign ministers of the ‘Big Three’ – the USSR, the UK, and the US. The three powers agreed that Nazi leaders who committed crimes across multiple nations should be tried by an international court.

At that time, even the idea of lynching Nazi leaders seemed valid. Benito Mussolini was executed along with his mistress by Italian partisans on April 28, 1945, without any trial. Their mutilated bodies were publicly displayed. No one mourned Mussolini; similarly, no one would have objected if a Red Army soldier had shot Hitler.............

A film built on Israeli soldiers' accounts wins acclaim, while the Palestinian doctors and journalists who documented the genocide in Gaza for three years struggle for recognition

Would anyone be calling NAZA a masterpiece if a Palestinian had made it?

The filmmaker Daniele Rugo and I were asking each other that as we walked out of a screening at the Zurich Film Festival of the new documentary in which 24 anonymous Israeli soldiers and intelligence officers describe how they killed Palestinians in Gaza. Daniele's own film, Life Support, which my organisation, Health Workers 4 Palestine, is proud to have backed as associate producers, was having its international premiere.

Between us, we had watched Palestinian doctors, nurses and journalists document the destruction of Gaza in real time for three years, many of them at the cost of their lives. Neither of us could remember their work being received like this.

Since its premiere in Venice, where it won the Special Jury Prize, NAZA has been greeted as a reckoning. Critics have called it essential, devastating, the new authority on what Israel has done in Gaza. Its directors, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, made the Oscar-winning No Other Land with their Palestinian colleagues Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal.

Their new film, produced by the Guardian with Jonathan Glazer as executive producer, sits its witnesses on Tel Aviv rooftops at night, faces hidden, and lets them explain, calmly and in detail, how the killing was done.....

Whistleblower Says Trump Officials ‘Predetermined’ Conclusions in Harvard Antisemitism Probe

A former Justice Department civil rights attorney accused Trump administration officials of predetermining the outcomes of antisemitism investigations into Harvard and other universities and pursuing sweeping penalties before investigators had established civil rights violations, according to a whistleblower account filed Monday.

The 25-page disclosure from Haley Van Erem also adds new detail about the settlement terms Trump administration officials were considering with Harvard in April 2025. More notably, the proposal would have required Harvard to invest in programs in Israel and place endowment money in trusts that the government could seize — provisions that had not previously been disclosed.

The proposal also called for Harvard to enter new memorandums of understanding with police, fleshing out an earlier April 3 strategy memo that contemplated requiring greater collaboration between the University and law enforcement.

The disclosure underscores that the April 11 letter — a sweeping list of demands that Harvard President Alan M. Garber ’76 publicly shot down as a violation of the University’s academic freedom — represented a less expansive version of some of the interventions administration officials were floating privately.

The proposed settlement is one of several previously unreported details included in the disclosure, which offers a granular window into the early days of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against Harvard.

The disclosure was submitted Monday by the Government Accountability Project on behalf of Van Erem, a former civil rights attorney at the Department of Justice, to the Office of Special Counsel and the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Service Offices of Inspector General on Monday.

The whistleblower group also shared the disclosure with the House and Senate judiciary committees, and it has since been publicized by Rep. Jamie Raskin ’83 (D-Md.).

A DOJ spokesperson said in a Tuesday statement that the department “stands behind the integrity of these investigations” and said Van Erem was not assigned to work on university probes.

But in the disclosure, Van Erem recounts an encounter with then-HHS Acting General Counsel Sean R. Keveney in which he showed her the proposed settlement terms with Harvard on a computer screen.

Keveney told Van Erem that he believed a settlement with Harvard would be easy to achieve because the University was “over a barrel,” according to the filing. Van Erem pushed back, warning of “potential First Amendment problems” if the government was monitoring curriculum and arguing that the proposed reforms extended beyond measures directly tied to antisemitism.....................

In August, the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) publicly took credit for shaping “multiple provisions” now in this year’s defense policy bill, stating that many were “impacted by prior JINSA policy recommendations,” including “proposals to strengthen U.S.-Israel defense industrial base integration” and “renew pre-existing joint U.S.-Israel programs.”

Among the provisions JINSA takes credit for is the controversial Section 219. In the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), this section mandates the creation of a single executive agent tasked with “synchronizing cooperative efforts” between the U.S. and Israel across nine basket categories, including AI, quantum technology, biotechnology, and virtually every category of weapons.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that such provisions would transition the U.S.-Israel security relationship from aid to partnership. But pro-Israel advocates have emphasized the leverage it would provide over Washington’s military policy.

Mark Dubowitz, the CEO of the pro-Israel Foundation for Defense of Democracies, appeared to reference this provision in an article arguing that the U.S. and Israel must “deepen their military, technological, intelligence and economic integration to such an extent that inflicting financial harm on Israel would also carry a significant cost for Washington.”

Other initiatives JINSA has advocated for likewise read like an Israeli government wishlist. They include a pending provision to “extend the existing War Reserve Stockpile Authority for Israel,” which provides a secretive and high-speed pathway for funneling weapons to Israel, as well as Abraham Accords provisions including “Improvements to Air and Missile Defense Acquisition” and a “United States-Abraham Accords Defense Cooperation Initiative.”

The policy wins JINSA is trumpeting are a result of its strong foothold within the military-industrial complex, and are perhaps one of the most overlooked aspects of the pro-Israel lobby. The group says it achieves these goals “by conducting both educational programs that build ties among American, Israeli and other Middle Eastern partner military leaders, along with in-depth research and actionable recommendations to influence U.S. policy.” JINSA’s “Our People” webpage includes a long roster of retired U.S. military officials.

One of JINSA’s most important programs, which has existed for more than four decades, is its “Generals and Admirals Program.” The initiative involves flying recently retired U.S. military officials to Israel. Many of the trip’s participants were already sitting on defense-industry boards when they went, while others joined soon afterward. At least 55 of the 83 alumni from the 2019–2026 G&A program cohorts (about 66%) have held or currently hold positions in the defense industry spanning board seats, executive jobs or advisory roles at defense contractors and defense-tech firms, or posts at defense-focused investment funds, consultancies and lobbying shops.

Yemen's Houthis: Who They Are and How Many They Number Today, on the Eve of the Bab al-Mandab Seizure

Who are Yemen's Houthis, and how many of them are there today? They are a Shia insurgent movement that officially calls itself "Ansar Allah." The group controls territory home to 60-65% of Yemen's population. Its armed forces number up to 350,000 fighters. This week, in September 2026, the movement broke through to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, sending world oil prices surging past 100 dollars a barrel.

Who the Houthis Are and Where the Name Comes From

The Houthis are a religious-political movement representing the Zaydi branch of Shia Islam. It is concentrated in northern Yemen, in the mountainous province of Saada, which borders Saudi Arabia. Zaydism occupies an intermediate position between Sunni and Shia Islam and has been practiced in Yemen for centuries. Notably, Zaydism was historically Yemen's state religion for nearly a thousand years. The Zaydi imamate survived until 1962, when a republican revolution overthrew the last imam. This historical memory of its own statehood noticeably fuels the political ambitions of today's movement. But in the 1990s, the Zaydi elite felt an existential threat to its own identity from the growing encroachment of Saudi Wahhabism.

It was then that the religious figure Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi founded the "Believing Youth" movement — initially a purely cultural and theological project. The movement gradually became politicized, turning into opposition to then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Houthis considered him corrupt and excessively pliant toward outside influence, above all Saudi influence. A curious detail: the Houthis themselves categorically reject any characterization of their uprising as a separatist project. The movement presents itself as a force fighting for the interests of all of Yemen, not just the Zaydi minority.

The name "Houthis" was given to them after the movement's founder, though they themselves prefer the official name "Ansar Allah" — "Supporters of God." In 2004, Hussein al-Houthi was killed in clashes with government forces, after which the movement was taken over by his younger brother, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, who still leads the organization today.

From Local Uprising to the Capture of the Capital

The Houthis' armed uprising against Yemen's government began in 2004. Over the following decade, they gradually expanded their control over territories in the north of the country. The 2011 Yemeni revolution, which forced President Saleh to resign, played a notable role in strengthening the movement.

The turning point came in September 2014, when the Houthis seized Yemen's capital, Sanaa. The formal pretext was protests against cuts to fuel subsidies, but behind it lay a far more ambitious goal — an effective seizure of power in the country. By 2014-2015, the movement had established a parallel system of governance across a significant part of the country's territory.

The Saudi Coalition and Eleven Years of Unfinished War

The rapid rise of the Houthis seriously alarmed Saudi Arabia, for which any growth of Iranian influence right on its border looked like a direct threat to national security. Reports of growing ties between the Houthis and Iran emerged from around 2012-2013. Riyadh saw the Yemeni crisis as a regional confrontation with Tehran fought by proxy through local insurgents.

In late March 2015, Saudi Arabia formed and led a military coalition. Formally, that operation continues to this day — more than eleven years on — making the Yemeni conflict one of the most protracted wars in the modern Middle East. Tellingly, even the term "civil war" does not fully capture the specifics of the conflict: at various stages it has drawn in the separatist Southern Transitional Council and local tribal militias, turning the confrontation into a multi-sided conflict with a hard-to-predict dynamic of shifting alliances......................

WIth two days to go before Brazil's election, the US last night closed its embassies and consulates, citing "security concerns." Australia, Canada and the UK then did the same. Lula's campaign is based on claims of a US coup, so they're using these embassy closing to somehow justify that fear, but Brazilian media says that the Federal Police are investigating plots of attacks on the US consulate and have already carried out search and seizures against two individuals.

Mark Carney is doubling down on a colonial force in the West Bank with barely a peep from pro-Palestinian forces. In fact, some are supporting a security initiative that highlights the scope of Canadian Zionism and liberal/left naivety towards “aid”. At the UN last week, the prime minister announced new funds to bolster a security force assisting Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank. As part of a hundred-million-dollar announcement, Canada added $20 million in “aid” for Palestinian security initiatives with Carney noting in an official release, “we will continue to lead in training the Palestinian Authority’s security forces through Operation PROTEUS, and we stand ready to extend that support to Gaza when conditions permit.” The NDP and most major Palestine solidarity groups seem to have ignored a rare government mention of the two-decade old Operation PROTEUS despite Carney tying it to potentially enforcing Israeli/US rule over Gaza. “Pro-Palestinian” Liberal MP Salma Zahid went a step further explicitly endorsing the move. Zahid posted, “I welcome this increased support from Canada, including the RCMP training Palestinian police officers in the West Bank. We need to do all we can to improve safety and security in the region.” But this “aid” has nothing to do with Palestinian safety and security. In fact, over the past two decades, Canada has spent several hundred million dollars supporting a US effort to build a Palestinian Authority Security Force to assist Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank. The PA forces, which are vetted by Israel’s internal Shin-Bet intelligence agency, act as the “subcontractor of the Occupation”. They have repeatedly disrupted demonstrations against Israel’s brutality in Gaza and turned their guns on Palestinians resisting occupation in Jenin and elsewhere. As Tamara Nassar explained: “PA forces are Israel’s foot soldiers. The body’s raison d’être is to suppress Palestinian opposition and resistance to help Israel maintain its occupation in the West Bank while promoting the illusion of Palestinian autonomy and representation. In the areas where the PA has nominal control, Palestinian forces are only allowed to arrest other Palestinians. They cannot touch Israeli soldiers or settlers who attack Palestinians.” Around two dozen Canadian troops and a dozen RCMP officers are part of Operation Proteus, which trains PA security forces as part of a mission led by the Office of the United States Security Coordinator. Initially in charge of organizing the PA force, US General Keith Dayton told the Associated Press in 2009, “We don’t provide anything to the Palestinians unless it has been thoroughly coordinated with the State of Israel and they agree to it.” Like all colonial authorities throughout history, Israel looks to compliant locals to take up the occupation’s security burden. What is unique about the training and support for the PA security forces is the role of third-party trainers from Canada, Britian and the US. Canada’s role in training, equipping and assisting the PA force began in earnest after Hamas won legislative elections in 2006. To sow division within Palestinian society, Ottawa cut off aid and refused to recognize a Palestinian unity government. When Hamas officials were ousted from the Palestinian unity government in June 2007, Ottawa devoted significant resources to creating a Palestinian security force “to ensure that the PA maintains control of the West Bank against Hamas,” as then Canadian Ambassador to Israel Jon Allen was quoted as saying by the Canadian Jewish News. In 2010 deputy foreign minister Peter Kent said Operation Proteus received “most of the money” from a five-year $300 million Canadian “aid” program to the PA. Today, Operation Proteus receives $20 million per year directly and more funding indirectly. A heavily censored 2012 note that Postmedia unearthed through an Access to Information Request confirmed the goal of Canadian security aid to the PA was to protect a corrupt Mahmoud Abbas, whose electoral mandate expired in 2009, from popular backlash. Canadian International Development Agency president Margaret Biggs explained, “The emergence of popular protests on the Palestinian street against the Palestinian Authority is worrying and the Israelis have been imploring the international donor community to continue to support the Palestinian Authority.” Biggs further explained, “The Israelis have noted the importance of Canada’s contribution to the relative stability achieved through extensive security co-operation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.” The head of the aid agency said a sizable chunk of Canada’s “aid” to the Palestinians helped suppress protests at the behest of the colonial ruler. In last week’s announcement Carney expressed a desire to extend Canada’s role in PA security assistance to Gaza. Last November, reported The Maple, Canadian soldiers and RCMP part of Operation PROTEUS attended an Israeli military seminar showcasing its genocidal methods in Gaza. Alongside learning from the génocidaires, Canadian soldiers were part of what the New York Times labelled “The American-Run Base Planning Gaza’s Future”. Now, the US is seeking to build a base in Gaza to serve as headquarters for up to 5,000 personnel, part of the Donald Trump led Board of Peace’s planned International Stabilization Force. Carney is preparing to assist these efforts through Operation Proteus. Opponents of genocide and apartheid should oppose these moves and demand the end of Operation Proteus. From Haiti to the Philippines, Canadian “aid” has often been used to subjugate the already disenfranchised. Leftists should be far more skeptical of Canadian “aid”. The assistance Carney announced last week is part of what he described as a “Zionist Palestinian state”. It’s an odious conception.

On the morning of Saturday, February 28, people across Iran began their day like any other. It was one week into the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and people were preparing for their work and school week. Parents hustled their children out the door for school as the notorious morning traffic jams filled the streets of Tehran and other cities.

In the southern Iranian city of Minab, preschool teacher Hossniyeh Salem was getting ready to leave the house. “Like any other day, I got my child ready at 7 o’clock—because my son is in fifth grade and attended the same school,” she recalled. “I got Yassin ready and headed to school. Yassin went to the boys’ school and I stayed at preschool, in my own class.”

It was Salem’s seventh year as a teacher at Shajareh Tayyebeh, a well-respected, private school. “The upper floor was for girls and the downstairs was for boys. One section was for preschool. You can say there were three schools there. The preschool was in the same building,” she said. “There were students there from all walks of life—children from working class families, educators. We had all kinds of students there.”

Among the students at the school was 6-year-old Fatemeh Yazdanpanah from the fishing village of Gurzang, about eight miles from Minab. The village is well known for its daily fish market—a bustling, strategic hub where fishermen trade their catches from both the Minab River and the Persian Gulf. There is a girls’ school in Gurzang, but Fatemeh’s father, Yaghoub Yazdanpanah, saw gifts for poetry in his daughter and he wanted to secure for her the best education he could find..............

The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (the “Bureau”) decided on 28 September 2026 that the twenty-fifth session of the Assembly, originally scheduled to take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York, will be relocated to The Hague from 30 November to 7 December 2026 (inclusive), with Saturday, 5 December and Sunday, 6 December as working days.

The decision was taken in light of concerns related to limitations on participation arising from the venue of the session. These include elected officials of the Court subject to United States sanctions, as well as visa restrictions affecting some delegations and representatives of non-governmental organizations. The decision to relocate the Assembly session was taken following consultations with all States Parties.

The Assembly has previously recognized the importance of enhancing the security of participants in its work, including all States Parties representatives, officials of the Court as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations participating in Assembly sessions.

The President of the Assembly, Ms. Päivi Kaukoranta, emphasized that the decision to relocate the twenty-fifth session was taken in light of the specific circumstances prevailing in 2026 and does not establish a precedent for determining the venue of future sessions of the Assembly.

It then uses its veto on the UN Security Council to block demands for united UN intervention, or even for a ceasefire in Gaza, it supports Israel in the UN and in the International Court of Justice, and it sanctions the UN Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, and the International Criminal Court members who issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes.

Our closest ally’s provision of diplomatic cover for and continuous flow of money and arms to Israel has permitted Israel to act with impunity for its untrammelled barbarity.

Those actions ensure that our ally is not just complicit but actively participating in egregious criminal conduct including the indiscriminate slaughter, maiming and starvation of countless women and children. Now it has even resorted to suspending visas for Palestinian passport holders, including for Palestinian officials set to attend the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York this month.

When the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, was asked about President Trump’s plans to “take over Gaza” he said he would not be offering a “running commentary” on President Trump’s remarks.

When a semi-anonymous social media user declared that the federal government had targeted her in a bizarre entrapment scheme, the paranoid claim snowballed into a more disturbing revelation: the Pentagon appears to be breaking the law by paying conservative influencers to track, surveil, and propagandize Americans. Who else is involved in the covert scheme?

In mid-August, a conservative activist using the digital moniker “Datarepublican” quietly admitted she was employed by the Pentagon as a “special government employee.” For months, she’d been pocketing a government paycheck while intensely lobbying for President Trump’s imperialist misadventures online and tracking their most vocal critics in a digital database.

Datarepublican was identified in 2025 as Jennica Pounds, a Utah-based mother with nearly a million followers whose stated raison d’etre is “fighting communists” – a moniker she applies liberally to anyone perceptibly to the left of Barry Goldwater.

And she’s not alone. Pounds has emerged as the face of a new wave of right-wing influencers who are being covertly employed by the US Department of War to spread pro-government propaganda. On August 29th, Washington Post reporters revealed at least three more digital activists are surreptitiously working for the Pentagon, which designates them as either special government employees (SGEs) or as what the US military calls “highly qualified experts” (HQEs).

Named in the Pentagon’s army of influencers were retired Air Force colonel Rob Maness, and retired Army colonels Kurt Schlichter and Thomas Anderson. Like Pounds, Anderson also operated in relative anonymity until recently, posting under the Twitter handle “Cynical Publius.” Schlicter, for his part, is a prolific right-wing troll who has frequently fantasized about the ethnic cleansing and extermination of Palestinians......

CANADA: The New Reality: Nationalism

“As of this moment, Canada will become part of the United States of America. The Government of Canada is hereby dissolved … To ensure that this transfer of power takes place smoothly and without incident, transport aircraft and helicopters of the United States Air Force carrying troops and equipment are now landing at airports in all major Canadian cities and at all Canadian Armed Forces bases…”

This chilling statement, attributed to the President of the U.S. in 1980, who is retaliating against Canada’s refusal to surrender vast quantities of natural gas to the U.S., is the beginning of a 1973 Canadian bestseller entitled Ultimatum. By the time the novel ends, all is lost; the Governor General of Canada muses sadly, “We fought for our independence as long as possible, but it couldn’t last.” Even while Canadians were mulling over that fanciful prophecy, its stridently nationalistic author, Toronto Lawyer Richard Rohmer, was producing an equally flamboyant sequel, Exxoneration. This time the U.S. invades Canada but is beaten back by Canadian forces with some help from the Soviet Union.

Americans who fondly remember the days when both Canada and the U.S. boasted about sharing “the longest undefended border in the world” may be inclined to dismiss such extremist literary nonsense out of hand. Yet the best-selling Rohmer novels are bizarrely representative of one aspect of the current Canadian mood: a rising nationalism and its inevitable corollary, a growing anti-Americanism. The Toronto Star published a story last September alleging that the U.S. had actually massed tanks and heavy artillery at the border in preparation for an invasion during the terrorist kidnapings and crisis in Quebec in October 1970. The story was patently untrue but was taken seriously enough for the Canadian federal government to feel obliged to deny it.

Irritating Rhetoric. The new nationalistic spirit has been heightened by the energy crisis. Canada is the only Western industrial nation that is self-sufficient in energy, and it has not been hesitant about asserting its new-found strength, sometimes to the discomfiture of the U.S. Without the courtesy of consulting Washington, as it often did in the past on such matters, the Ottawa government last year increased the tax on its oil exports to the U.S. from 40¢ per bbl. to $5.20, thereby making Canadian oil, which accounts for 20% of all U.S. imports, the most expensive crude on the Chicago market. In a subsequent move, Canada announced a 60% price increase for the natural gas it exports to the U.S. Three weeks ago, Ottawa announced that it would sharply reduce oil exports to the U.S., from the present 900,000 bbl. per day to perhaps 650,000 by next summer. Under the new schedule, Canadian oil exports to the U.S. could end completely by 1982...................

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday welcomed the prospect of Canada becoming an “associate member” of the E.U., just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the proposal as “laughable.”

Addressing the European Parliament as a guest of honor in Strasbourg, France, Carney insisted “Europe and Canada are stronger together” and said “Canada and the European Union can anchor our ground to hold our values while forming a protective canopy under which our citizens can thrive.”

Carney’s pivot toward Europe comes as he seeks to establish stronger international ties and curtail Canada’s reliance on the American market amid an all-out trade war. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs came into effect last week, matching the economic pressure imposed by the U.S. after negotiations collapsed last month. Trump’s repeated threats against Canadian sovereignty and calls to make it the “51st state” have added to the months-long tension.

While Carney did not directly mention Trump or his Administration while addressing European lawmakers, he appeared to make nods to the current volatility of Canada-U.S. relations and condemned economic coercions. Speaking about the "current geopolitical rupture," he said a "new dimension was needed.”

“Economic integration is now being weaponized, tariffs being used to exert pressure,” he said. “Financial mechanisms have been used for coercion. Supply chains constitute weak points to be exploited.”....................

A new documentary alleging that Israel relied on powerful AI tools to kill thousands in Gaza has sent shockwaves through the Venice Film Festival, with one of the film’s insiders describing planning airstrikes as “insanely fun.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has categorically rejected the film’s portrayal, insisting that the whistleblowers cannot be verified.

The 80-minute-long film NAZA, which premiered on Thursday, is built around testimony from 24 anonymized Israeli military and intelligence insiders. Its title alludes to an Israeli military shorthand for expected “collateral casualties” in an attack.

The film, which was made by two Israeli Oscar-winning filmmakers, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, received a roughly 25-minute standing ovation – the longest on record at the event. The footage also showed a full audience, with some viewers holding Palestinian flags.

In the film, Israeli insiders claim that the IDF used an AI system known as ‘Lavender’ to identify people for assassination. The filmmakers’ sources also alleged that the tool operated based on thousands of hacked phones, with even a single phrase, “daddy’s home,” picked up on a child’s phone being enough to launch an attack.

Other sources told the tale of brazen disregard for humanitarian laws, and a “general atmosphere” of “hatred” towards Palestinians.
In one of the most chilling revelations, an insider claimed that at one point a strike on a single Hamas member was approved despite an expected toll of 500 civilians.

“It was done on a mass scale, like a factory”, one source said, with others describing the profiling and targeting as “a video game” and “insanely fun.” .................................

I rarely leave it this long between writing, but I’ve been somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fuckery we face.

That fuckery should, I know, be grist to my mill, but rather than motivating me, it has left me feeling angry, dispirited, and, perversely, lacking motivation.

I’m well aware of the dangers of what some refer to as “doomscrolling” and I usually manage to find the balance between ingesting the doom, processing it, and then trying to make sense of it in my writing. But over the last two weeks, for whatever reason, that ability has broken down. I’m working on a couple of longer-form research pieces, and they will be published soon, but I thought I’d get back on the horse and over the mental block by, well, doing this. By writing what I’ve been thinking without worrying too much about form or cohesiveness.

And what I’ve been mainly thinking is that the burden is both in the knowing, and the caring. Doomscrolling is a misnomer, a term used to rhetorically delegitimise those who keep up with the torrent of horrible news and the numerous, accelerating and overlapping crises we’re presented with. And not to sound snobbish, but the reality is that the majority of people who get their news from mainstream sources are shielded from knowing the worst of it. They are shielded from doom, because too much knowledge imperils the system. And if you don’t know, how can you care? But if you do know? Well, therein lies the danger.

As an example, three weeks ago BBC News in the UK did a piece on Israel opening a probe into the murder of Hind Rajab, the five year-old from Gaza riddled with bullets while on the phone to the Red Cross, having survived an attack on the car that killed her family. My good friend, an educated, intelligent, empathetic person, was watching the news and had never heard the story before. She was, naturally, outraged and upset. If the story of Hind was news to her more than two-and-a-half years later, you can imagine what else she doesn’t know about the genocide, about Israel, Palestine, Zionism and on and on. Essentially all the things that, if you subscribe to this newsletter, you do know, and have the burden of knowing.

My friend watches BBC news religiously, before work, and when she gets home from work. Because she, like many others, believes this is a good way to stay informed about the world. But how do we tell people that what the BBC and other mainstream news outlets report is carefully curated to support imperial narratives, without sounding like a conspiratorial loon? How do we tell people that mainstream news is full of deliberate omissions, avoidance of context, and occasionally, outright lies designed, especially when it comes to empire, to protect western interests. How to tell my friend that the only reason the BBC is reporting about Hind now is because they can use her murder to present Israel not as an outlaw state, but as a place where legal, judicial and political processes are working? How to tell her that a story about Israeli troops murdering a child is designed not to harm Israel’s reputation, but help rescue it? How to tell her that Israel is a key node in the rise of a far-right international enamoured with eugenics and working towards a pre-crime, technological surveillance-security state?

But all this, I suspect, would be easier than talking about Russia and Ukraine................

Zionists are pursuing a two-pronged strategy in Britain, capturing the political class while casting the Palestine movement as enemies of ‘the people’. The left should be more radical in fighting back.

n July 2016, the veteran Conservative politician Alan Duncan was slated for a promotion at the Foreign Office. ‘All seems clear and agreed that I will be Minister for the Middle East, as expected’, he wrote in his diary. ‘Permanent Under-Secretary Simon McDonald called to say it’s all been agreed and he would recommend it to the Foreign Secretary.’

Later that day the plan was suddenly upended. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told Duncan that word had got out about the move and that ‘Conservative Friends of Israel are going ballistic’. Johnson reported that senior figures in CFI, Eric Pickles and Stuart Polak, had ‘both called him incessantly’ to demand the appointment be rescinded. Duncan’s crime? His vocal support for a two-state solution: the official position of the UK government.

Soon after, Prime Minister Theresa May told Johnson that Duncan had been vetoed; he instead took up the role of Minister for Europe and the Americas, for which he was considerably less qualified. ‘The Israelis think they control the Foreign Office’, he later remarked to McDonald. ‘And they do!’

At first sight, this looks like a classic case of the people versus the elite. A foreign state is able to control who gets a job in the British state, rendering the democratic will entirely irrelevant. While only 12 percent of Britons now say they sympathise with Israel, the material effect on government policy is negligible. Labour cannot bring itself to enforce even the most minor, symbolic suspension of weapons licenses. Lethal fighter jet components continue to flow freely while British spy planes have been dispatched to assist Israeli intelligence.

Most analyses of the Israel lobby (meaning the loose, informal grouping of organisations whose activities advance Israeli interests) tend to stop here, assuming that its function is simply to insulate decision-making from the masses. But this is only half the story. In fact, the lobby’s response to Israel’s growing unpopularity is not just to co-opt political elites and protect them from popular pressure, but to pursue a ‘populist’ strategy of their own — one that has proven highly effective. By presenting pro-Palestine sentiment as the mark of untrustworthy outsiders to the British nation, allies of Israel have tried to divide, disorientate and defang large parts of the solidarity movement. In so doing, they have become part of a disturbing new political alignment, finding common ground with the rising right-wing populism represented by Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson.............

A judge dismissed a lawsuit from a civilian engineer in the Military Sealift Command after it was determined that her report of being raped in her own bed aboard a Navy transport ship was within her duties and must be treated as a worker’s comp claim. The order handed down this month closed a multiyear attempt by Elsie Dominguez to get justice for an assault she said threw her personal and professional lives into shambles. She eventually took an unpaid year away from work to recover, as her perpetrator continued to receive pay while being investigated, she said. “I’ve lost a lot of sleep, I’ve lost a lot of friends who didn’t agree with what I was doing in coming forward,” said Dominguez, 35. “I learned that I had to set a precedent legally so that this could be used in the future.” She spoke from her current assignment in Croatia about the entire experience, which began in December 2021 while she worked as the first assistant engineer aboard the USNS Carson City, an expeditionary fast transport vessel. Dominguez said the ship’s captain used a master key code to access her private room overnight and rape her in her bed. For we, stateside, have built a culture entirely at the service of warfare, with myths, stories, and platitudes hardwired into the brains of 349 million people extolling war, not as a necessity, but as ritual, as cleansing, as meditation, and as redemption. We are bombing schools and hospitals to secure the rapture, for the war industry in the apocalyptic end times has been tasked with the creation of biblical events.
