The family became attached to Bo as quickly as Bo became attached to them, and together they formed a bond that would last a lifetime.

So when the Moeller’s discovered that beloved Collie missing on Memorial Day in 2003, their hearts were broken into a hundred pieces. The dog with whom they had shared so much, who they had taught to sit and roll over, who had cuddled with them when they needed him most was just plain gone.

The family searched desperately for months, only to have their hearts broken again each time they were called in to identify a Collie who wasn’t their Bo. Bob Moeller was quoted in the Chicago Daily-Herald as saying, “It was a double heartbreak,

There is no telling what the duo endured during their days on the streets, but it did appear that one of the dogs had been hit by a car - her injuries had been that severe.

After the article was published, Ohio residents lavished the newsroom and the dog warden’s office with phone calls, emails, and letters. And the outcry didn’t stop there. Ranging anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds, Gordon’s do better in larger homes with a sizeable yard although they can “rough it” in a smaller dwelling if their owners are passionate and dedicated about exercising them. No matter what the size of the home or the yard, Gordon Setter owner must take their dog outdoors on a daily basis for some heart-thumping exercise. Your Gordon will want to kick it into overdrive every now and again, so if you have a small yard, you may consider exercising in a nearby park (if it is safe and your Gordon is obedient enough to handle the freedom).

The lake had to ban swimming because the over-abundance of seagulls lead to an E. coli contamination. Not much fun for lake-seeking vacationers!

Their solution was genius. The Parks department “hired” several Border Collies to “patrol” the lake front. Their approach has been immensely successful. According to Katie Grammoll, a field operations manager for the Migratory Bird Management Department, “it works” because Border Collies have a knack for “stalking” the birds, intimidating them but not causing them harm. “It’s a predatory action similar to what wolves and coyotes and foxes do when they’re stalking their prey. A daily, cardiovascularly-challenging work-out will go a long way to keeping a Gordon happy, healthy, and long-lived.

Thirty minutes, however, is the bare minimum. Ideally, a Gordon Setter is active as much of the day as possible. The Gordon Setter was bred with stamina necessary to track and “set” birds through the woods all live-long day. Anything less is unfulfilling to this breed.

Finding the best, nutrient-dense dog food may be a tad more expensive, but a few extra bucks may mean the difference between a energetic, happy Gordon Setter and a Gordon Setter who packs on the pounds, develops allergy problems, or chronic diarrhea.

No one wants a couch potato for a dog, especially a Gordon Setter. But the question remains…what food is the right food? While there isn’t really a simple, straight-forward answer, we aim to provide a few pointers in our dog food information article.
