Unlike our home in Quezon City, where our house was situated outside the village and on a main road, our new subdivision is a gated community. Whoever owned the dog probably just lived within a block or two, so we really couldn’t take him in. Besides, he had a collar (he obviously had a family who cared enough about him to gift him with a collar), but no tag or any form of identification. Luckily, we chanced upon his owners roaming the streets looking for him.

We fortunately haven’t lost any of our dogs yet. Not even the turtle. We always make sure that the gate remains closed for fear they might wander about, but the thought that somebody in the household might forget gives me the compulsion to check on my pets ever so often. They didn’t have any form of identification — if they’re lost, they’re lost. They’re too cute and friendly, and I won’t be surprised that whoever finds them might not want to look for us. Luckily, Shantee, Kubrick and Pixel were given a chance to try out Will Wag for Tags‘ custom pet name and info tags for this blog.

The pet tags are about the size of a one-Peso coin, but it could already contain your pet’s name, your contact number and address. That’s enough to make it easy for people to find you in case you lose your pet. Although pet microchips offer a more permanent solution (the microchip is embedded directly into your pet’s skin), this technology requires a scanner to read the information in the chip. Some vets have this technology, some don’t. The thing is, you still need to bring the lost pet to somebody who does have the scanner to know how to contact the owner from the microchip. That’s quite a hassle, especially if you don’t have a vet with the technology near you — also considering the fact that the pet you found might not even have a microchip in the first place.

With a pet tag, you basically just need to know how to read The owner’s info is displayed on plain sight, you can easily read it and try to contact him/her. And best of all, it’s cheaper. Will Wag for Tags’ Pet Info Tags, which can contain pet’s name, owner’s contact info and address, costs only Php450. You can also add a charm accessory of your choice (this depends on availability in stock though).

If you only want to put your pet’s name and have the tag solely for decorative, dog fashionista purposes, it’s cheaper. A Pet Name Tag costs Php250, while a Limited Edition Pet Name Tag is Php350.

For the pet tags of Shantee, Kubrick, and Pixel, I made sure that our phone number is engraved aside from their names. I only have a prepaid cellphone SIM, so a landline phone number was the more practical choice to put. I wasn’t really that picky about how decorative the tags were (they were already pretty nice by themselves in my opinion), so I just left the decorating to Kristine of Will Wag for Tags. I simply gave her an overview of my dogs personalities: Kubrick, the athletic “alpha dog commander” of our pack; Shantee, the camera-loving diva of Dog Fashionista; and Pixel, Shantee and Kubrick’s loyal but a bit shy and timid daughter. Looking at these tags, I’d say she’d done a pretty good job! Clean engravings, with designs that fit my dogs’ personality perfectly

Muffins, biscuits, biscotti, and other pastries that we humans eat usually contain ingredients dangerous — or even deadly — for our dogs. Wouldn’t it be nice if they can enjoy these yummy treats like we do? Believe it or not, they can now. Whole Pet Kitchen Pet Deli & Bark-ery makes this all possible!

Shantee and the Canine Crew got the chance to try these gourmet treats for Dog Fashionista. Whole Pet Kitchen gave us a sampler of their menu, different varieties of yummy dog treats. I made everyone in the Crew try each variety, and just like humans, each of them had their own favorites But no doubt, the entire Canine Crew went crazy over the Beefy Biscotti and muffins (Banana-Oat Pupcakes and Liver Muffins).

I’ve been hoping the Beefy Biscotti will last till Christmas so the dogs can have something special that day, but Shantee had a different idea:

The little critter just wouldn’t stop asking for a piece! Shelf life of the muffins is only three days, but ours didn’t even last two. The dogs already devoured the muffins before reaching recommended shelf life!

Pixel finished hers ahead of Shantee, who ate really slowwwwww. I don’t know, but she usually eats slower than the slowest moving turtle whenever she enjoys the food. Probably so it would last longer? Or maybe she wanted to show the other dogs she still had more when they already finished theirs — just like what she did to Pixel in the photo below. Naughty, naughty!

I have no doubt my dogs enjoyed Whole Pet Kitchen’s treats. But what I liked about it more is the fact that the treats are very healthy for the dogs. Giannina Gonzalez, the chef behind Whole Pet Kitchen, makes sure that all the ingredients are safe and of high quality. Handmade and even tasted by humans, Giannina had her vet friends test the “healthiness” of the treats even before adding them to her menu to ensure that the treats are totally safe for pooches. And yep, even I tried it. First time for me to ever say that in this blog: I tried the dog treat! It wasn’t so bad, kind of like those healthy, sugar-less biscuits I’ve tasted before. I didn’t try the Liver Muffin though… I left the tasting of that to the dogs!

The idea of a “liver” muffin might not be so appealing to us, but it’s the best-seller to my pooches. Actually, I think they really love the beefy stuff. And I have a feeling most dogs will like it too. They can be given as treats, as rewards for training, or even as “dog party food” if you’re into that. Whole Pet Kitchen even offers round cakes just for your dogs on order basis. You get to choose from a Banana-Oat Pupcake or Liver Pupcake base, topped with a choice of Sweet Potato – Cream Cheese, Sweet Potato – Peanut Butter, or Sweet Potato – Mango Frosting. You can also choose the color of the icing for your dog’s cake message: Carob (brown), Turmeric (yellow) and Cream Cheese (beige).

For his birthday, he got the chance to try out doggie wear from our friends at Doodles Paw Couture (thanks much, DPC!). I was a bit skeptical to dress him up at first… He is, after all, a boy dog. But, as usual, DPC came through. They have perfectly “macho” outfits for our little boy!

DPC allowed me to pick Kubrick’s outfits, and this blue hoodie is one of my choices. Aside from being able to give a canine impression of rapper Eminem, this cute hoodie has a very geeky print on its back:

It’s a print of Twitter’s “Follow me” Very fitting, since Kubrick is basically a walking advertisement for my dog blogs (PinoyDogLover.Com and this one, DogFashionista.Com) and we do have Twitter accounts you can follow (PinoyDogLover and FashionPooch). For someone who never ever heard of Twitter, “Follow me” could mean “hey human, follow me!”

Anyway, regardless of what this hoodie print represents, I love it for Kubrick! Blue is my favorite color, and it looks so adorable on him. I just couldn’t resist giving him a photo shoot — complete with a black leather sofa, an Android phone, and headphones (courtesy of, but not exactly permitted to use by, my husband Marc!). Marc wasn’t too happy getting a bit of fur on his headphones, but we had so much fun! Well, except for Shantee… She wasn’t too happy with all the attention Kubrick got. I had to make my sister carry her, she wouldn’t stop blocking the camera lens just when I’m about to take a shot.

My dogs’ first experience with Beggin’ Strips was almost two years ago, sometime in January 2011. Since then, my pets’ reactions to Beggin’ Strips never changed. Shantee remembers she’s a dog, Kubrick turns into the most well-behaved dog that even Cesar Milan would be proud of! Patatats, our old and loyal Aspin, becomes as young as a pup. Popoy, also an Aspin, turns his hyperactivity to maximum level. Now that we have Pixel and Leica Lens joining our canine crew, we’ve got two more pooches turning like lunatics whenever they see that yellow package of Beggin’ Strips!

There’s no way I’m going to try the Beggin’ Strips myself, but I can’t say I’ve never been tempted No, I’m not crazy — I’m just very curious. I can’t help but wonder why my dogs are so crazy about it! It must be the bacon smell, the taste… I don’t know. But for sure, there is something about Beggin’ Strips that my pets enjoy so much.

Well, there is definitely something about Beggin’ Strips that we humans will like — Beggin’ Strips cost only about Php75 a pack. It’s affordable enough that my husband doesn’t mind if we included one in our cart whenever we buy groceries. A piece is quite big, so I usually break them into smaller pieces. Besides, my dogs are mostly toy dogs anyway.

You can get Beggin’ Strips at most pet shops and even grocery stores. They now come in three different varieties: Beggin’ Strips (Bacon), Beggin’ Strips (Bacon and Cheese), and Beggin’ Littles. Beggin’ Littles are made for pooches like Shantee — strips of smaller pieces — but my dogs haven’t tried it yet. I’d probably get them Beggin’ Littles one of these days though!

I’ve always wanted to make a really nice gown for Shantee, but I honestly don’t have enough patience for the details. The most detailed dress I’ve probably ever done for Shantee was her dog wedding gown, but after that, the most I made for her are dresses that don’t really have much details. I don’t really know much about sewing techniques. After all, I’m just doing this for fun.

Luckily, our generous friends from Doodles Paw Couture (DPC) made Shantee’s “dream” of having a real doggie gown a reality!

I’m no fashion designer, but this gown fits The Dog Fashionista’s personality perfectly, wouldn’t you say?

I didn’t really know what to expect after DPC asked for Shantee’s measurements. All I knew that they would deliver an awesome gown, but I definitely didn’t expect they’d be able to make something that would really fit Shantee! Not just in terms of measurements, but also of how it would fit her personality. Shantee loves the spotlight (isn’t it obvious hehe), and could be a real princess brat sometimes. It’s such a pleasant surprise that they were able to capture all that and transform it to a gown!

The gown DPC made for Shantee had a fuchsia satin top embroidered with sequins and satin flowers, lined with silver lace. The layered pink tulle skirt lined with silver lace completed the look — a girly princess gown for a girly princess pooch

The gown doesn’t only fit Shantee’s personality, but it also exemplifies The Dog Fashionista website real well. So yeah, this gown is going to be Shantee’s “official” Dog Fashionista dress, something she’ll wear in events we’ll attend as representatives of this blog! Next time you see a Shih Tzu in a pink tutu gown in a pet event, you’ll know you’re looking at Shantee

Shantee’s custom dress is just one of the many gorgeous gowns DPC has made. They’ve done quite a number of awe-inspiring designs I never even thought possible. But best of all, their rates are very reasonable. I’m still practical when it comes to pampering my dogs — making things for them as much as I can — but sometimes there are things that I’m not able to make, or don’t have the resources to. My sister and I just borrowed my dad’s background (our dad is a photographer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer), took out my handy DSLR, and set up a “mini studio” by the garage using boxes and natural light. Dad wasn’t really that happy when we returned it to him with little paw prints, but definitely beats spending a lot for a studio photo shoot
