I am so excited about launch week! And I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief that all that editing, revising, and detailing is finally DONE! Well, at least until the next book…

So, what does launch week mean for YOU?

Make sure you’ve “liked” Touching the Hem on Facebook, since I’ll be sharing giveaways there throughout the week. There’s going to be a few of them, so invite all your friends to “like” the page too!

Or you can go ahead and buy the ebook – it’s on sale on Amazon for $2.99 (this week only).

I’ll also be sharing a few places around the web. I’ll share a little more about the book, about my own story, and about the writing life. (Note: If you’re interested in having me share something on your website, I’d be happy to! Send me a message!)

I’d also love to have you celebrate with me this week! Visit the Resource page to find tweetables, sample Facebook posts, and graphics to share with your friends and family!

And if you’ve already read the ebook, would you consider leaving a quick review on Amazon or Goodreads sometime this week? I’d love to know what you thought, and it would let others know that you think it’s worth reading!

Also, a few acknowledgements…

Because I wouldn’t be celebrating this week, if it weren’t for the help and hard work of others. I never realized how much work was involved in getting to see your name on the spine of a book! And I know my own work was only half of it…

I have to give a big THANK YOU to my publisher, Ambassador International, for all their hard work and concentrated effort to get this book out in a timely and excellent manner. Editing, formatting, designing, revising, revising again, marketing… and their work still isn’t done! They’re still in the process of placing the book at various retail stores, and I am so grateful for their expertise in that!

I also want to say thanks to YOU, my friends and readers, who have encouraged me along the way. From those who first suggested I publish a book, to those who gave suggestions and advice, those who cheered me on through these past six months of hard work, and those who have prayed for me: THANK YOU. You may not realize just how much your encouragement kept me going!

And finally, a big THANK YOU to the wonderful team at Weaving Influence, who have been creating graphics and helping to share the book across the blogosphere. Also, a quick shout-out for Team Faith Builder, where they’ve been promoting it. You guys rock!

And finally…

Would you pray with me, that God would use this book for His glory?
That it would end up in the hands of those who most need its encouragement?

I didn’t write this book because I wanted it to end up on the NY Times bestseller list. I wrote it because I needed to study it out for my own spiritual benefit — and I wrote it to help others who are struggling through sickness, and in need of the true hope that can only be found in God’s Word.

I’m just the instrument, and the words in my book are just the tools. God is the One who can heal the heart, encourage the mind, and strengthen the body.

Surely He can use these words for His glory!

Read God’s Word with me this week!

Tuesday: 2 Kings 15-18, Psalm 89:19-52
Wednesday: 2 Kings 19-21, Psalm 90
Thursday: 2 Kings 22-25, Psalm 91
Friday: Luke 1-3, Psalm 92
Saturday: Luke 4-6, Psalm 93

That’s not a trick question… although it can be a tricky question. But it’s not too tricky if you know what’s written in God’s Word.

Let’s ignore the latter part of that question for a moment, and focus on the word pray. The Bible gives us some specific instructions about prayer: to pray about everything, without ceasing, with thanksgiving and faith, in Jesus’ name…

All these things boil down to one major command: we are to pray!

Prayer is our way of communicating with God. But praying to God is not merely speaking words with your lips. It requires the involvement of your entire being. It’s not simply a friendly chat, but a heart expression of total faith in the One who is sovereign over all.

Prayer is communication on the most intimate level.
Prayer is also communication at its fullest.

The word prayer is actually rather broad in its implications throughout Scripture. It can mean conversing, imploring, beseeching, worshiping earnestly, supplicating, petitioning, desiring greatly, entreating, pleading for mercy, interceding, groaning, or sighing.

We are to enjoy this most intimate, most full, communion with God on a regular basis. He tells us to ask, seek, and knock – implying persistence and passion in our prayers:

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds,
and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8

And Paul tells us to offer supplications in every circumstance – implying there is nothing too small or too irrelevant to pray about:

Do not be anxious about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
Philippians 4:6

God’s commands leave little room for doubt: we are to pray in every circumstance. {click here to tweet that!}

Now, what about praying for healing?

Once again, God’s Word holds the answers. Psalm 50:15 tells us to call upon God in the “day of trouble.” He wants to commune with us, no matter what our circumstances are. He wants us to humbly surrender our suffering to Him, “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). And we can surrender them with confidence to our great High Priest, who understands our suffering and is waiting to offer “mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

God’s Word also offers examples to encourage us. For instance, the Old Testament prophet Nehemiah. He responded to difficulty after difficulty by praying to God for help. Another is King Hezekiah, who responded to a fatal illness by begging God for healing. He was granted an extra fifteen years of life as a result of his prayer. And throughout the New Testament, we see various apostles praying for those who are suffering physically – and God answering those prayers either with physical healing or divine strength to endure through their trial (2 Corinthians 12:9).

You see, wherever there is lack or need, there is reason to pray. For instance, in times of war we pray for peace, and in times of drought we pray for rain. Thus, it follows that in times of sickness, we ought to pray for healing.

So, if we pray according to the standards set forth in His Word – with boldness, humility and reverence, thanksgiving, persistence, passion and expectancy, and surrender – will God answer our prayers for healing?

That’s another tricky question…

Although we must believe God will answer our requests in the way we desire, we must also acknowledge His ways and thoughts are far beyond our human comprehension. Even as we pray expecting God to answer, we must remember that He has promised to fulfill everything we truly need, not simply everything we desire.

And what He determines we need may be different from what we think we need. But remember – He has the helicopter view of our lives, we only have the dashboard view.

The key to praying for healing is praying,
and remembering that God’s ways are not our ways.
{click here to tweet that!}

Would you want your own way all the time, with your limited knowledge and faulty wisdom? I know I wouldn’t!

So pray for healing. Pray confidently and boldly – but also pray with humility, understanding that God’s ways are not always what we expect. But they are always perfect!

Let’s Chat!! Have you ever prayed for healing? What happened?

He is the head of all principalities and powers, and works all things according to the counsel of his will. We are told that by him all things consist, and in him we live and move and have our being.

He not only created all, but He also preserves all — in fact, His power alone keeps us in existence! This fact applies not just to man, but to the rest of creation as well–weather, animals, foliage. He created and controls it all, caring for and directing each element, plant, and animal. The book of Job contains several chapters describing God’s infinite control over creation:

God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend.
For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’ likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour… By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast. He loads the thick cloud with moisture; the clouds scatter his lightning. They turn around and around by his guidance, to accomplish all that he commands them on the face of the habitable world.
Job 36:5-12

Of course, if God cares so much for the inanimate and helpless entities of His creation, how much more do you think He cares for you, His own child who was created in His very image?

God planned out each of our lives from the very beginning of time. And He leaves nothing to chance or randomness, but rather controls every single event that enters our lives. In fact, Job reminds us that God has already determined the number of our days, and has appointed limits which we cannot surpass.

What a comfort this should be! As C.H. Spurgeon once proclaimed, in a sermon about God’s sovereignty:

There is no attribute more comforting to His children than the doctrine of Divine Sovereignty. Under the most adverse circumstances, in the most severe troubles, they believe that Sovereignty hath ordained their afflictions, that Sovereignty overrules them, and that Sovereignty will sanctify them all.

We may not understand how God moves and directs. In fact, we are told that as high as the heavens are above the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

We may not understand His ways, but we can rest in knowing God is King over all. We can rest in His knowledge, and His ability to use this knowledge for our good and His glory.

It’s a blessing to have friends to help out when your own load is a little too heavy. And it’s an extra-special blessing when those friends are firmly planted in God’s Word and able to share His timeless wisdom and life-giving encouragement. Barefoot Hippie Girl is one of those friends, and I’m honored to share her words with you once again.

********************************************

Last week, on Facebook, I kind of bragged that I had most of my own posts written already for the upcoming week. And Elizabeth asked me if I wanted to write a post for her. It took me all of about 2 seconds to say yes. Then I wondered just what I was going to write about.

But, I prayed about it, and God laid the topic on my heart that I have been studying for our VBS this year.

Runaways.

Do you have any idea of how many men and women ran away from home in the Bible? I didn’t. Not until my husband brought it up earlier this spring.

There’s Moses, who ran away from Egypt, after he killed an Egyptian and buried him in the sand.

And David, that courageous youngin’ who killed Goliath. Well, he ran away several times in his life. He spent 13 years running from Saul. And then, in his final years, he ran away from his palace and throne when his son Absalom started an uprising.

How about Hagar, the slave girl, and pawn of Abraham and Sarah? Sleeps with Abraham, gets pregnant. Taunts Sarah and gets mistreated. Runs away.

We see Jacob running away when his lies and manipulation provoked murderous rage in his brother.

Elijah ran away after a tremendous spiritual victory. He plunged into the depths of despair, and ran for 40 days. Wow! Personally, I think my despair would cause me to hole up in bed for 40 days-not run for 40 days.

Or Jonah. We all know about him. God told him to preach to his enemies, the people of Nineveh. Jonah didn’t like that plan. In disobedience, he ran away from God. His plan was to head across the Mediterranean Sea, as far from God as he could get. That got him swallowed by a whale. Really effective.

The armies of Israel ran away from the tiny town of Ai. They ran away in defeat.

Cain ran away from the presence of God after killing his righteous brother Abel.

Onesimus stole from his Christian master and ran away, ending up in Rome. Quite far from Colosse, no matter how you measure it.

The prodigal son ran away from his responsibilities.

The disciples ran away from the soldiers in the garden in fear.

But, no matter who ran away, or for what reasons. Running didn’t solve their problems. Often they run away from their bad circumstances into even worse circumstances. And they all eventually had to come back home and face the music.

Have you ever thought about running away, whether as a child or an adult? I am reminded of the Andy Griffith episode (it may actually be the very first one) when Opie wants to run away. His dad offers to write his runaway note for him. And Opie comes to realize that maybe running away wasn’t going to be as much fun as he thought.

Adults have a tendency to run from churches and marriages and friendships and other situations that are just really hard to deal with. We run away in discouragement or anger or desperation. But, the problems aren’t dealt with by running, the situation doesn’t improve, and we haven’t changed.

Unless…

you run away to God. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.

When we run away to God, He changes us. He wrestles with us like He wrestled with Jacob, until we surrender.

When we run away to God, He speaks to us with a still small voice, like He did to Elijah. He meets our needs.

When we run away to God, He reveals the next step in His plan for our lives, like He did with Moses.

When we run away to God, we find Him the God who hears and is with us, like He heard Hagar.

When we run away to God, His gives us a second chance to serve Him and even bless fellow believers (and enemies), like He did with Onesimus and Jonah.

When we run away to God, He shows us our sinful hearts, restores us, and gives us victory, like He did with the armies of Israel.

When we run away to God, He makes us bold to tell what we have seen and experienced of Him, like He did with the disciples.

When we run away to God, He sends us right back where we came from, in order to face the situation with His strength and enabling. In His grace, He gives us another chance to rely on Him, and bring glory to Him. Isn’t that amazing!

Are you tempted to run away from a situation in your life? How can you run to God, and experience His grace and help?

What good is a book, if you don’t understand it? How will it help you, if you don’t know how to apply it?

The publication of Touching the Hem is wrapping up, and soon you’ll be able to get the paperback in your own hands. But what if you don’t catch some of the main points, don’t quite understand something, or don’t know how to personalize some of the truths?

That’s why I just finished writing a chapter-by-chapter Study Guide to go along with the book. Each chapter has a few observation questions (knowing the facts), a handful of application questions (personalizing the truths), a few notes about praying, and a relevant hymn suggestion.

It would be a great way to study through the book on your own, as part of your quiet time with God. There’s 23 entries, so it would give you just over 3 weeks of thought-provoking material. And each entry ends with some suggestions for prayer and praise, which relate directly to that chapter’s truths.

Or you could go through the book & study guide with a friend or small group. Some of the application questions might get a little personal (ie, how have you struggled to trust God during times of suffering?), but they would all make for some great discussion with like-minded Christians. And it would be so encouraging to compare notes with others who have faced similar trials!

Oh, and the best part about this study guide?

It’s FREE!! No strings attached.

Saturday: Colossians 1-4, Psalm 77

It’s been a while since I wrote about gratitude, but I’ve still been thinking about it. There’s been a lot going on, not just with my book, but also family stuff and unexpected news and decisions that need to be made. Some good, some not so good.

But through it all, there’s been plenty to be grateful for. And the one thought that keeps coming to mind, regarding gratitude, is this:

WHOM are you grateful TO?

Gratitude is not specific to Christians. Anyone in the world can be thankful for life, for good things, even for blessings in hard things. Just like anyone in the world can be honest, or kind, or gentle.

But what makes it distinctly Christian is not just being grateful, but being grateful TO someone. More specifically, being grateful to God.

As Christians, everything in our lives should be about God. He created us, He redeemed us, He sustains us. And so, to feel thankful for something, but not offer thanks to the One who gave it, is like rejecting the Giver in favor of the gift. Or worshiping the creation more than the Creator.

In other words:

Don’t just stand there and appreciate the beauty of nature — offer thanks to the One who created it.

Don’t just feel thankful for good relationships — offer thanks to the One who placed your family together and directed your friendships.

Don’t just feel happy about favorite foods, sweet music, or beautiful art — offer thanks to the One who generously gives you good things to enjoy.

Christian gratitude is always directed to God. {<–tweet that!}

Saying thank you to God is a simple thing, but it directs your thoughts to the One who created everything for your enjoyment. And you can go a step further, by expressing gratitude for a specific aspect of His character that is portrayed in that moment.

Let’s try it. Feel free to add your own gratitudes in the comment section!

This week I’m thankful to God for:

marriage, and how He uses it to teach us about Christ’s love for His bride

creating an intricate and beautiful world for us to explore

His grace that is sufficient for even the most challenging days

progress in getting published, as He directs my steps according to His perfect plan

homemade bread, and the reminder that He provides all our needs

farmer’s markets, another place to enjoy His bountiful creation

wisdom in making decisions, which He gives generously to all who ask

time off from school & work, because it lets us delight in God’s gifts

good music, created by man who is fashioned after the Great Creator of all

What are you thankful for today — and why?

I read the same verse three times the other night, and it made me nervous.

Three separate times, in less than thirty minutes, God directed me to focus on 2 Corinthians 12:9 –

My grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness.

And after the third time it showed up, I think I stopped breathing for a minute. You know how preachers say, ”if God says something more than once, you better pay attention”? Yeah, I was definitely paying attention!

And then I got nervous. Was God preparing me for something bad that was going to happen? Was He reassuring me before the fact, so the verse would be fresh in my mind?

My thoughts are kind of jumbled right now.

I’m thinking about insomnia, seeking wisdom, the need for daily Bible reading, focusing on the right priorities, training the mind, learning another new normal, praying for others, the hard work of publishing, and I’m not sure what else.

Mostly, I’m just tired.

But for good reason! I’m almost hesitant to say this, because I think I’m afraid I might jinx myself, but my health has actually been a little better lately. I still don’t have much energy, and am still on all my medications. But my labs have been improving, and we are decreasing dosages again, and (insomnia aside) I haven’t had too much debilitating fatigue lately. So I’ve been adding more activity, and pushing myself to do a little more. In other words, learning another new normal.

It’s much easier said than done. In fact, God has provided an opportunity to do some work with an amazing company (they connect authors to social media — so it’s right up my alley!). I’m really enjoying the work, but I’ve been struggling to put in 2 hours a day.

That probably doesn’t sound like much to you. But when your brain is addled by medications, and your body worn out from fighting illness, every hour of concentration is a challenge. Even watching a full-length movie is difficult some days!

With enough practice, however, things can improve and eventually become more routine. {Side note: Who doesn’t love routine?? Seriously?}

In addition, I’m still working towards the official book launch for Touching the Hem. I’ve got a study guide in progress, which I think (I hope) you’ll find beneficial. And the marketing aspect takes a lot of work, too. I’ve definitely gained a new appreciation for other authors through this publication process — and a whole lot of gratitude for good publishers!

{Side note #2: check out the newly revised webpage, the new blogger sign-up page, and the Amazon link!}

Anyway, I guess this is my apology for not focusing much on blogging lately. Honestly, I miss this space. I miss writing, and I miss interacting with y’all.

But it’s “one of those seasons.” It won’t last forever… in fact, as things wrap up with my book release, life should calm down a little (I hope!). And I don’t know how long these “good health” days will last — flareups and fatigue are pretty much expected with Wegener’s — but I’m taking advantage of the ones I do get!

Maybe my thoughts are a little less jumbled now. Because what I’m really trying to say in all this, is…. I cherish you all. I love getting to know you, and your comments (here, fbk, twitter) completely brighten my day. I feel like blogging has falling down the ladder a few rungs, but it’s still hanging on near the top. This publication process has felt like a long series of sprints, but the finish line is in sight.

And so, for those who have been cheering me on, and for those who have hung in there: THANK YOU.

Now it’s your turn!

What’s been happening in your life? Anything exciting? Anything we can pray about?
