Some people don’t want to put a dog neckace on their dog, either for safety reasons or because they haven’t found the perfect dog necklace.  For those of you who would like to add some style to your doggie without compromising safety or making your pet look too frou-frou, you can add dog charms to your dogs collar.

Dog charms come in all different shapes and sizes.  They look just like a charm that would go onto a bracelet or a neckace.  You can buy 1 dog charm that your pup can proudly display every day or you can buy several pieces and change your dogs charm any time you want–depending on what looks best with his puppy clothes that day.

Our first pet accessory to make your dog look great (and protect their eyes too) is doggles.  Doggles are goggles for dogs.  If you live in a sunny climate then doggles can protect your dog’s eyes by blocking harmful UV rays.  You wear sun glasses don’t you? Take care of your dogs eyes too.

For your dog’s head consider a hat or a doggy hair barrette.  You can have all kinds of fun matching a nice hat or barrette with your dog’s necklace.  Plus your pet will love all the new attention that it gets.

Got a male dog and want to make him look masculine? How about a dog bandanna to go with doggy dog tags.  Maybe throw on some dog sunglasses.  Now that’s a dog who was born to ride!

And finally, don’t forget about your dog’s leash. Now leashes can be plain and be completely functional, but then they are COMPLETELY BORING.   If you get a stylish leash then it can make walking your dog all that more fun. Matching a leash up with a dog’s necklace could be a real challenge. So shop around and you will have the most stylish dog in the whole neighborhood.

You want to dress up your puppy-dog without actually putting them into a dress? There are some really cool collars out there that are up for the challenge.

You can have your dog studded in some studs or sparkling with some rhinestones.  There are dog collars for every occasion.  They don’t all have to be designer dog collars either; you can just as easily pick up something less expensive without the brand name.  The designer dog collars do tend to have a little more of a jeweled selection for your royal canine highness.

A fun, sophisticated or risque dog collar is a great way to give your dog some attitude. You don’t necessarily have to dress him to the nine in tweed jackets and pleather pants to show off all that personality he has.  A collar can be just as sassy or studly as anything if your dog isn’t really into the whole puppy clothes thing.

I couldn’t very well walk into LeRoy’s party empty handed though. He’d be crushed. Here are some other item’s LeRoy received:

Dog Jewelry! LeRoy got some dog charms for his sterling silver chain necklace. One of the charms was the letter “L” for LeRoy. The other charm was a dog tag with a paw engraved along with LeRoy’s cell phone number. LeRoy doesnt actually have a cell phone…at this point anyway. Also, LeRoy and his daddy got matching crowns!

Dog clothes! LeRoy got a very trendy, personalized dog sweater, and a t-shirt with his mamma’s picture on it.

Dog Treats! He got some organic doggie biscuits from me and although the cake was for everyone all the dogs attending this party got some cake. (Don’t worry-it wasn’t chocolate, much to my disappointment.)

Dog Toys! LeRoy got so many toys I didn’t even know what they all did. Kongs. dog chew toys, tug-o-war ropes that looked pretty tough enough to live through his sharp puppy teeth.

The thing is, is this safe and should I do it?

Well, you have to keep in mind that even though your dog may portray some very human-like qualities like wanting the remote and wanting to eat at the dinner table, they are still animals. Jewelry for pets depends on your pet.  You know your pet best and some of those furry diva’s really need to sport their bling. If you have a dog that is begging to be adorned, then by all means, shower them in jewels.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

• If you have a teacup size dog it probably is not a good idea to put a heavy metal chain around their neck. Your little one will probably tip right over and not budge. This would not be good. Same is true for the opposite. Putting a delicate chain around a big and rough-around-the-edges dog may result in them unknowingly scratching the jewelry right off their neck.
  
• Necklaces on dogs should not be confused for collars or restraints. The jewelry is for adornment only–don’t go stringing the pearls from tree to pet. It doesn’t work that way.
• Measure your dog perfectly to make sure the jewelry is comfortable and not a choking hazard. You want your dog to love how he feels not to start resenting you for what you are making him do. Some pets see wearing their jewelry as an award because they receive so much positive attention while it is on. If he is being choked that really takes the fun out of it.
  
• Pick out necklaces that suit your dog. Would you buy your petite grandma a skull & bones silver chain? Well, I don’t know your grandma–personally mine would LOVE it but you have to keep your pet in mind. A rhinestone necklace for your Doberman could sound ridiculous; but maybe your Doberman is all about the rhinestone’s. Picking out a necklace that matches your dog’s personality is the key to finding the perfect gift.
  
• For first time dogs, introduce them to their new necklace by letting them to sniff it and see it. Brush the necklace over their skin so they can feel it and not be afraid. You should make loving, cooing noises while you put the necklace on your dog so they know that it is OK. If you just clamp the necklace on your dogs neck they may feel confused and scared; not knowing what it is or why you’re doing it. So be gentle. The more you like it the more they will like it.
• Tell them how pretty they look!

Dogs are wearing jewelry now.  Yes, thats right.  Hair ribbons, earrings, bow-ties, tiara’s and pearls are no longer just for you…and Miss America.  Maybe it was the unbridled popularity of purse dogs that took off with Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde that makes it now socially acceptable for pet owners to pamper their pets to a heightened level. 

Whatever it was, color us all Happy. 

If you ever wanted your pet to wear that long strand of pearls without being afraid that he would just be showing off shamelessly, worry no further.  Not that you were honestly that worried in the first place!  Never be afraid to shimmer what you’ve got. Pets everywhere are being rounded up and bedazzled into stars. Lavish your beloved friend with elegance and glamor.  Necklaces are for everyone.  Spread the unconditional love and show your pooch how fabulous they can look.  Maybe you can even buy a matching set and dress to impress for a walk around the dog park. 

Take care with your doggie’s accessories and make sure to never leave your dog completely unattended while glamified.  Luxury is a beautiful thing and we need to be careful to not leave our four-legged fashionista in a place where their jewelry can get them into trouble!
