dogstar’s winter range has almost arrived!

Inspired by the enigma of the underworld, dogstar designer, Masayo Yasuki, has drawn on the inspiration of phantoms, villains, masked rogues and shadowy profiles overthrown by cities for dogstar’s winter 2009 range.

The visual nature of this collection is arcane, secretive, and belonging to dingy streets of mystery and lightless movement. Pin stripes and asymmetrical cuts sketch the edges of shadows, hoods mask and silhouette figures into apparitions, and a sooty and overcast colour palette eclipses the lightness of summer. Sharp lines and faint stripes intersected with loose charcoal drapes of darkness, and the deconstructed edges of ordinarily structured garments, ensures that Yasuki’s well loved union of East and West is pushed to a darker, more dramatic level.

Welcome to the dogstar studio!  

Creative spaces are full of ideas. Whether they are new ideas or old ideas, whether they are ones you are keeping to reflect on a later date, or whether they are just in their initial, niggling, not-quite-born stages, studios of all persuasions are ovens for what’s about to be baked and devoured.  Collections of treasure others might label as junk, the half made, the discarded, storyboards, lists, sketches, rolls of fabric, brown-paper patterns,  textures, coffee cups, swamped pin boards, photos, unforgettable magazine spreads and trails of phone numbers—these are things that flesh out our South Brisbane studio.

Today we wanted to bring you a little picture of where we work and how dogstar comes to be, as this is where our ideas and creative dreams are born! We will be bringing you more from behind the scenes regularly, so keep checking in!

The name ‘dogstar’ was suggested by a book (now unknown title) which was largely about how ancient Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations worshipped the dogstar (Sirius) and how important it was in their beliefs. Many pyramids are aligned with the dogstar, some having viewing chambers and night sky openings which are designed for the entombed to be able to see Sirius (or at least have its light shine upon them) at certain important times of the year. 

The name ‘dogstar’ seemed to us to have a certain beauty and mystery which was applicable to Masayo’s design ethic and inspiration.

From our stores to our outlook, from our ranges to the array of people we are working with, 2009 is going to be an exciting year of change and inspiration for Masayo and for dogstar.

“2009 for me is about new directions. A new range will make its way to dogstar, we will find you jewellery and accessories from across the world, and we are dreaming of expanding. I am looking forward to collaborating with artists, whether they be installation artists for our stores, visual artists for our garments, or even sound and performance artists for our run way shows. This year, collaborating has taken on a new meaning to me; I want it to be a really involved and a shared experience. What might happen from the chance of two people sharing the creative process is something I’m really excited about!”
