She recounts her own recent brush with a tick attached to her leg while her dogs have been totally tick-free thanks to vigilant year-round use of Vectra topical tick repellent and killer; Allison Denlea (Paws 4 Positive Training, Official Trainer of the show) discusses the case of Martha B's dog Eli -- a rescue from Best Friends in Utah now living in Vermont -- who is becoming aggressive around his cage and how his story can help all of us recognize and manage aggression issues; Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, joins Tracie to defend and explain the random quotes floating in cyberspace attributed to him (like falsehoods that he doesn't like pets and doesn't think they should be allowed) and to unmask the devious entity behind the full page ads in the New York Times and elsewhere that bash the HSUS. Tracie invited Wayne because of a letter she received from Cindy questioning Tracie's judgment about Wayne's moral consistency on behalf of all animals -- and to try to silence misinformed fanatics like "Zelda," who send quasi-hysterical email blasts trashing the Humane Society of the United States. (No, there is no such thing!) Freddie de la Hay in Corduroy Mansions and continues with The Dog Who Came in From the Cold. Alexander calls from his native Scotland to discuss his creative process -- where does he get inspiration from for his unforgettable characters? -- and explains how dogs and cats have fit into his own life (Augustus Basil the Tonkinese kitty being his current pet); Tracie discusses a recent cover article in the Sunday New York Times that highlighted the physical harm being done by breeders to the English Bulldog, and she goes further to include many other breeds being harmed by short-sighted breeding like the Pug, the American German Shepherd and even people insisting on "chocolate" standard poodles (many of which are the purposeful result of incest); Tracie does a year-end wrap up with Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, of animal-related accomplishments that really mattered in 2011 and resolutions for animals in the New Year. Well now there is terrific happy news! Gil talks about his new guide dog partner Satch, a big beautiful yellow Lab. Gil describes their partnership, from frolics in their local river to squeezing into a small commuter plane for Satch's first-ever plane ride; Roselle is the heroine of Michael Hingson's riveting new book Thunder Dog, that chronicles the author escaping on 9/11 from the 78th floor of the World Trade Center Tower One with his brave and steady guide dog (who was recently awarded Hero of the Year by the American Humane Association). She thanks the generous folks at Dr. Elsey's cat litter company who sent a second shipment of ONE TON of Cat Attract litter to the sanctuary! Dr Phil Padrid, the official vet of the show, uses personal examples and cites important studies to explain why seeing the vet for a wellness visit twice a year can improve the quality and length of your old-timer's life; Nancy Kerns, the delightful Editor of (the indispensable) The Whole Dog Journal discusses a series of articles written over the years by WDJ contributor Lisa Rodier, which focus on how to manage old-timer's issues like Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome and mobility challenges. Tracie mentions a recent New York Times Style Section article which tagged three "must have" fall clothing items, one of which was a braided fur jacket, which she suggests is something we all must not have in our wardrobe because of the ghastly consequences to the animals who gave up that fur; lastly, Tracie discusses how many people don't do anything for their older dogs who are limping and shuffling along in serious pain from arthritis, for which there are many treatments, including: a glucosamine supplement like Platinum Performance, anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids from a quality fish oil like Nordic Naturals; a liquid anti-inflammatory medication like Metacam, injections of Adequan, stem cell therapy like the one she got for her two dogs from Vet-Stem and then acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and swimming. You owe it to yourself and your pets to learn everything you can now. This show was inspired by the tragic and sudden death of the 5-year-old Black Lab Evie, who was the guide dog for my long time listener Gil. He discovered her cancer and got what he thought was the best treatment, yet was shocked and confused that she died within a week of receiving chemotherapy. I wanted to know more about what risks there are in chemotherapy and also whether the treatment given Evie was correct. Guests include Dr. Brian Huber on Oncura Partners, a wonderful and smart cancer veterinarian, and Dr. Donna Spector (www.SpectorDVM.com), official Second Opinion Vet on this show.
