It's a somewhat lofty debate: Do animals have a soul? Representatives on either side of this issue are able to deliver fairly convincing arguments. Yet, when it comes to dogs, it somehow becomes harder to argue against the existence of a spiritual element to this kind and empathetic animal.

What would a dog soul look like? What elements might we find if we could see into a dog's higher self? It seems there would definitely be a component of care and dedication to human beings. Dogs have been a stalwart friend to man pretty much ever since there have been dogs and men. Various studies have confirmed that when we pet dogs, it isn't just the canines reaping the benefits. Stroking a dog's coat has been shown to ease stress and elevate the neurotransmitters associated with bringing about a sense of calm.

It would seem that if dogs do have souls they are somehow inextricably linked to our own. And when you look into the eyes of your favorite canine companion, this isn't too difficult to imagine. The bond between man and dog runs far too deep to be one of mere affinity. Somewhere along the way canines and human beings were joined together in a way we intuitively understand, but can't quite explain. It would seem that dogs not only have souls, they have souls that are somehow reflections of our own.
Maybe it's the velvety wet nose gently brushing up against your hand in the morning. Maybe it's that whip-like little tail racing back and forth at what seems like the speed of light the moment your car pulls into the driveway. Maybe it's the long, loping walks to nowhere in particular. Maybe it's that fact that none of your human friends seem to be quite as good at listening … or understanding.

The reasons vary from dog owner to dog owner (or, as we like to think of it, "one who is owned by a dog"), but one thing is certain -- you can't help but love that dog! The dog human relationship is an important one, and is at least 10,000 years old (experts quibble over exactly when domestication occurred, but it's safe to say these pooches have been with us for many thousands of years). Dogs provide us with not only companionship and amusement, they give us that one thing it is so hard for us to give one another: unconditional love.

Through new jobs, new lives, new homes, new relationships -- our dogs are always there, cheering us on and standing (or sitting, or rolling over, or playing dead) firmly in our corner. And when you think of it that way, it's no wonder that no matter how many shoes get chewed up, how many blankets get shredded, and how many dinner guests are "enthusiastically greeted," you just can't help but love that dog.
If you have a dog you know they need to be groomed. While different breeds need to be groomed at more or less frequent intervals, all dogs need this important care. Breeds vary in their fur lengths, texture, thickness, and number of sheds. Be honest with yourself, if you aren’t up for the level of care a high maintenance breed presents that might not be the pet for you!

Why Groom?

Grooming your dog is more than just aesthetics. Fur left uncared for can become matted and tangled. This fur can pull on a dog’s skin causing injury, and then need to be shaved. Dog’s fur can grow over their eyes making it hard for them to see, or for some breeds long enough to become a tripping hazard!

What Do I Need?

This will also depend on the breed of dog you own. There are a variety of different brushes on the market. Dog’s coats typically have two types of fur: the outer layer of fur, which is coarser, and the inner layer of fur, which is much softer. A dog’s hair grows to a predetermined length, some stay short and some will grow quite long.

Some of the most common brushes include: a bristle brush, a pin brush, and a soft or rubber brush. A metal comb for grooming is also a handy tool. You may also need a hound glove. Don’t forget equipment for taking care of their nails. Choose an organic dog shampoo for your pup’s bath. Not sure what to choose? Consult dog shampoo reviews. Dog bathing frequency will vary from breed to breed.

Wiry Coats

Dogs with wiry coats need to be brushed at least three times a week to remove loose dead hair. These breeds can be considered high maintenance if you are going to take the time to properly brush them! These coats do best being washed about once every three months. Terriers and Dachshunds are breeds that belong in this category.

Curly, Non-shedding Coats

Think poodles! Poodles should be bathed and trimmed every two months. Extra care needs to be taken dealing with extra fur in and around their ears, make certain you hire a professional to do your grooming.

Long Thick Coats

As you might suspect long thick coats require frequent brushing. In fact when these dogs are shedding they may need to be brushed daily. This breed of dog has a coat with protective oils. Too frequent bathing strips these oils which is detrimental to their coats.

Choose a shampoo designed to care for your breed’s fur. Dog shampoo reviews can help you find just the right one. What is the dog bathing frequency for this breed? On average these breeds need baths only about twice a year. Akitas and Newfoundlands belong in this group.

Smooth Coats

Use a hound glove to keep these pups looking great. A hound glove has a slicker brush on one side and rubber studs on the other. Comb these breeds once a week. Use dog shampoo reviews to find just the right shampoo for your dog’s baths. These breeds need a bath two to three times a year.

Who falls into this category? Dalmatians, Dobermans, Boxers, Whippets, and Labradors!

Know Your Breed

By knowing your breed you will know how to care for their fur coat! Each breed has unique challenges. Remember to use a trained professional groomer to get the best, most appropriate cut on your dog. Remember that the dog bathing frequency varies by breed. When it is time for a bath refer to dog shampoo reviews to find the best shampoo for your pooch. There are shampoos on the market tailored to different fur colors, protection against fleas, and a number of other concerns you may have. Spend some time researching your breed to make sure you are giving them the best care you can!
How to Choose a Breed for your Family

You’ve decided to add a dog to your family. This is a big commitment! Your mind might immediately fly to the supplies you’ll need. Leashes, food bowls, organic dog shampoo and other bath supplies, the list goes on. These things should come second to choosing just the right breed for your family. Knowing what breed will best fit into your lifestyle is key to making a decision that will keep your family and your new dog happy. When you are choosing a dog you need to consider their disposition, temperament, size, and energy. All of these things will help determine if a dog is the right fit. So what are the best family dog breeds?

Remember these are meant to giving you a starting point. The best family dog breeds don’t guarantee that your child and a dog will be a good match. They are both individuals! It is important to talk to your vet before making any big adoption decisions. It is also a good idea to spend some time with each of the breeds you are considering.

The Best Family Dog Breeds

Pugs

While not a “rule” larger dogs may be a wiser choice for small children. Why? They are less likely to be an injured by accidently being stepped on. Big dogs are more durable, and anyone who has watched a toddler with a pet knows why that is important. It makes children less likely to get bit because a scared, hurt dog snapped at them.

An exception to this, Pugs. Pugs are very friendly by nature. They love people, especially playing with children. They can be a great fit for a home with kids.

Labrador Retrievers

These dogs are by far one of the most commonly thought of dog when considering the best family dog breeds. They love to run and play with children. They are a very loving and loyal dog. All of these things make them great family pets.

However, you need to have time for a Labrador because they have a LOT of energy. This means they need exercise and training. Without those two things Labradors can become a large dog barreling down your kids with all their extra energy!

Collies

Collies are gentle dogs. This is a great temperament to have when it comes to a home with children. They are still active and enjoy being played with. The only potential “downside” is that these dogs will require a little more grooming to keep them looking their best because of their long hair.

Whippets

An incredibly friendly and loyal dog a Whippet makes a great addition to the family. These dogs will like sharing quiet time with you, but they need and want time to run too! The perfect combination for a family dog. Great for any size home as long as they get time to exercise.

English Bulldog

These dogs are bred to be great companions. They should be both loving and patient. Overall have a loving and gentle demeanor. They are a loyal friend that would be happy to sit next to you while you do homework. However they may have some limitations as far as activities go, so if you have an older child looking for a dog to run miles alongside a bike, a bulldog may not be your choice.

These five breeds are among the best family dog breeds. They should certainly be on your list to check out when choosing a breed for your family.

So before you head out the door to buy chew toys, dog beds, organic dog shampoo and other bath supplies, remember choosing the right breed is crucial to the success of your pet-owner relationship. Spend enough time doing your research before you adopt.
This holiday season you want something special for your dog. They have been a great companion all year round, and now you are looking for the perfect gift for them. Something that lets your pup know you appreciate them!

Every pet has their own personality. The gifts you choose should reflect this. Maybe your dog enjoys the finer things. Shop the wide array of designer dog supplies available today! If your dog is the class clown at the dog park you may want to search out funny dog stuff for them. There are countless clothing, toy, and accessory choices on the market. Here are five great ideas to get you started.

If your dog enjoys being pampered have an at-home spa day. In designer dog supplies you can find a wide array of dog nail polishes. Nail polish will give your dog that extra pep in their step this holiday season. Remember though it is important to buy a product meant for dogs. They are designed to be applied to your dog’s nails with ease.

Polishes made for them also take into account the fact that pets chew on their feet. Look for water-based products with natural ingredients.

This is a great time of year to expand your dog’s wardrobe! There are many different dog clothes to choose from. If you want funny dog stuff, look for outfits that have lots of character. Your dog might want to sport a biker jacket, a shirt with a holiday greeting, or even get them their own gear for an “ugly Christmas sweater” party!

Don’t have anywhere to go with their expanded wardrobe? Did you know that dog wardrobes are available on the market? Now your dog will have a place to hang all of their designer dog supplies.

If your pup doesn’t like to wear clothes, or even if they do, consider glamming them up this season with fancy dog collars! The options are countless. You can find collars with sparkle, in a rainbow of colors to match the occasion, or with a printed season’s greeting on them.

Collars, even fancy dog collars, serve an important practical purpose too. This time of year guests are frequently in and out of our homes, which means more open doors. With all of that hustle bustle and distraction your pet has a lot more opportunity to slip out of the house for an adventure. Make sure your dog is wearing their collar with up-to-date tags to ensure a happy holiday season for both of you.

Your pooch can always use a new toy! Give them something appropriate to chew on and save your shoes. Toys give you a great opportunity to find funny dog stuff. Chew toys come shaped as almost anything you can imagine.

There are also toys out there that encourage your dog to play and keep them stimulated by being motion activated by your dog. This is great for a dog with a lot of energy to work off.

Make your puppy feel like one of the family by giving them their very own stocking. There are great decorations available to incorporate this important member of your family. Just remember your dog has a great sense of smell, so tucking treats into a stocking just out of reach and leaving them unattended could spell disaster! Always be aware of potential dangers to your pet when decorating for the holidays.

Whether your pup enjoys funny dog stuff or the finer things in life there are designer dog supplies on the market for them. Think about your dog’s personality, and their current favorites when choosing just the right thing for them this holiday season.
The holiday season can be tricky to navigate with your dog. They are part of your family so you want to spend time with them, but you also want to keep them safe and not stress them. You can share happy holidays with your pup if you plan ahead and avoid common pitfalls.

The Problem With All That Food

Holidays and food go hand in hand. But with all that temptation you have to be vigilant about what your dog has access too. When you have family and friends around you also usually have some of the big problem foods and drinks around.

• Chocolate: Chocolate, and coffee, contain xanthines. In dogs this causes damage in the nervous and urinary systems, and can cause excessive stimulation of the heart. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most dangerous for your dog, but you’ll want to keep all chocolate out of your dog’s reach. Even if your pet doesn’t suffer any of the more serious affects you may still have to take care of a dog with diarrhea. And who wants that!

• Alcohol: When friends and family are around for holiday gatherings there will also be drinks around. Alcohol and pets don’t mix. Dogs are drawn to the sweet taste of mixed drinks and holiday specialties like eggnog, but they can be lethal. Keep an eye on drinks set on easily accessible coffee tables. After the party resist the urge to wait to clean up, clear leftover drinks up right away.

Be careful what goes under your Christmas tree. You may want to wrap up a treat for your special pup. Don’t put it under the tree, at least not unattended! Your dog will smell something yummy under there and you risk him eating more than just his present. Trees and holiday plants can cause upset stomachs and irritation. Don’t tempt your puppy by putting treats next to them. If you want a package under the Christmas tree for your favorite pup choose from a selection of favorite dog toys. Or get your dog some aromatherapy shampoos to enjoy after the holidays to help relax. You can look up dog shampoo reviews to choose the best one.

The Trouble With Tinsel

Holiday decorations are shiny, shimmery, and sooooo tempting for a dog to play with. There are two major concerns when it comes to holiday decorations.

• Intestinal Blockage. This happens when your dog eats strings, ribbons, bows, yarn, or Christmas decorations like tinsel. When your dog eats these things they can become stuck in their intestines requiring surgery to heal.

• Cuts and other lacerations. Dogs love to play with balls or other things that may look like favorite dog toys. And they will use their mouths to explore them. Glass decorations can easily break and cut your pooch.

Adding New Pets

A new puppy needs all of your love and attention. They are full of energy and can easily find trouble. The holidays are a far from an ideal time to add a new puppy to your home. If you had been planning on giving a dog as a gift consider alternative options. Put together a basket of favorite dog toys. Or a basket of all the things they’ll need like brushes, jackets, or organic dog shampoo. You can choose the shampoo using dog shampoo reviews. Then when things calm down after the holiday you’ll be ready for your new pet.

An After the Holiday Treat

Once you’ve navigated through the holiday with your dog take some time to treat them to a relaxing bath. There are lots of products out there designed to relax through aromatherapy. Choose the best one for your dog using dog shampoo reviews.

Remember stay safe, stay vigilant, and keep your pup out of urgent care this holiday season!
Regular dog grooming is an important part of owning a dog. By caring for your dog’s basic grooming needs you’ll keep them happy and healthy for years to come. There are five big areas to concentrate on when you are grooming your dog.

1. Brushing Your Dog:

Your dog will love the attention they get while you brush them. Brushing your dog will give time for your relationship to grow AND keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny! If you have a long haired dog you should be brushing them daily, a medium haired dog weekly, and a short haired dog monthly. Following these guidelines will help keep matted hair and tangles from showing up on your pup!

Have a system in place to make sure you do your best job brushing your dog. Brush from one end to the other, you can start at either tail or head, pick a direction and you won’t miss anything in the middle. Then brush from the top of the dog down.

What if your dog already has hair mattes? You’ll need the right brushes to remove the matting. Slowly free the matte with a slicker brush. If you have a large stubborn matte you can remove it with a clipper, be careful not to hit your pup’s skin!

2. Dog haircuts:

Dog haircuts occur at different intervals depending on what breed of dog you have. A breed with fast growing hair may need a cut as often as every 2 to 4 weeks, dogs with shorter hair can go much longer. While you should probably hire someone trained in dog haircuts to do full haircuts on your animal, in between cuts you can do trims yourself. Dog haircuts can say a lot about a dog, you want them looking good!

3. Bathe Your Dog With Organic Dog Shampoo:

Like it or not giving your dog a bath is part of pet ownership! The frequency of these baths will vary depending on the breed of your dog. Recommendations vary from once every 3 months to once a month on how often to bathe your puppy. If your dog loves the mud you may be up for super frequent bathing!

Make wise choices about the products that you use on your dog. Organic dog shampoo is a great place to start.

4. Clip Their Nails:

You need to keep your dog’s nails cut. This process will be much easier if your dog is used to having their paws handled. Play with your dog’s feet and toes when you are spending time together, this will make them more relaxed when it is time to cut their nails.

You want to avoid the quick, which is the vein that runs through the nail. Cutting this will cause your pet pain and it will become exponentially more difficult to convince them to hold still while you trim their nails.

5. Brush Your Pooch’s Teeth:

Just like clipping nails your dog may need to get used to the idea of having their teeth cleaned. You can start by massaging their gums/teeth with your finger or having them taste a small amount of toothpaste designed for dogs.

Get a toothbrush made for dogs to use. You will apply toothpaste directly to your dog’s teeth and brush! Brushing your dog’s teeth is never a bad thing aim to do it every day, or every other day at least.

Now that you have five big areas to concentrate on to get your dog groomed well, make sure you are prepared with the right equipment. Putting together a grooming basket for your pup is a great idea. You’ll need an assortment of hair brushes (depending on the length of your dog’s hair), organic dog shampoo and other bath equipment, a sharp nail clipper designed for dogs, dog toothbrush and toothpaste, and the name of a groomer who gives great dog haircuts!
Winter is just around the corner. This means soon your dog will have to deal with an onslaught of cold, dry air, freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Your dog is a domesticated animal. That means they are going to need your help to successfully navigate this weather free of illness and injury. Dogs in cold weather face a number of challenges. As an owner if you avoid the following common mistakes your dog will have an easier time overcoming these challenges.

1. Not Giving Dogs in Cold Weather Extra Food.

Your pup is going to burn extra calories in the winter just keeping their body temp up and regulated. Compensate by increasing the amount of food they are getting. In addition to giving a little extra food pay special attention that they always have an adequate amount of water. Dogs can become dehydrated during the winter just as easily as in the summer. Plenty of water will also help fight dry skin.

2. Leaving Antifreeze Where Dogs Can Reach It.

Antifreeze can both smell and taste good to your dog, but it can be lethal to them. Be careful that you clean up any spills that occur from your own car and monitor what your dog is taking interest in on the road and other neighbors’ driveways while on walks. Dogs in cold weather face multiple dangers from antifreeze. It is poisonous to consume, and it can irritate your dog’s paws. For this reason look into products that contain propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.

3. Taking Your Dog Outside Without Dog Boots or Paw Protection.

Dogs in cold weather need protection for their paws. You have a wide range of options with designer dog supplies to find just the right dog boots for your pet. These boots are necessary because salt, sand, ice, chemical de-icers and antifreeze can cause a lot of damage to your dog’s paws.

To further reduce the chance of your pet’s paws sustaining damage keep the fur on their paws and between their toes trimmed short. If you don’t want to go shopping for designer dog supplies for paw protection, then you can also spray on the bottom of your dog’s feet non-flavored cooking spray. Or use a petroleum jelly or Musher’s wax spread on the bottom of them.

Towel dry off your dog’s feet when you arrive home and double check for any signs of redness or cracking.

4. Keeping Your Pup Outside For Long Stretches.

Your dog is not equipped to be outside in the winter for long stretches, even with clothing. Dogs in cold weather can lose their scent. This leads to an increase in lost dogs during the winter months. Safe guard your dog by limiting outside time and keeping their collar and tags on at all times.

Another good reason to limit your pet’s time outside is frost bite. Frost bite on ears, tails, and feet can be a big winter hazard for your dog. Pay attention to your dog’s body temperature. Remember that wind chill often means it is colder outside than the actual temperature reads.

5. Not Providing Your Dog With a Winter Coat, or Using a Coat That Doesn’t Fit Correctly.

In the current designer dog supplies market you have lots of choices for dog coats! They are available in a wide range of styles, sizes, and costs. Finding an appropriate coat for your dog should be a priority. Ill-fitting outwear can be the same as sending your pooch out without a coat at all. The important things to consider when finding the perfect coat or sweater are their weight and the measurement from the base of their neck to the base of their tail.

Additional Winter Tips:

While dogs in cold weather face hazards outside, winter brings some dangers inside too.

*If you partake in holiday decorations beware of tinsel. This shiny decoration can block their intestines if swallowed. Glass ornaments can also pose a threat to a curious dog who decides to take a bite. They are easily broken and can cut your dog’s mouth.

*Fire places will be in use this time of year. Safe guard them from an overly excited pet who could easily be burned by them.

Winter can bring extra areas of caution for dog owners, but it is also a fun time! Find just the right designer dog supplies to spoil your pooch. Enjoy accessorizing your dog’s winter coat with the perfect pair of dog boots. Avoid these five mistakes and you and your pet will enjoy spending the winter together!
Keeping your family’s dog clean is an important part of pet ownership. How often your family pet needs to be bathed can vary widely depending on several things including their breed, and what kind of trouble they like to get into! If you take your dog on mud runs with you, you are signing up for increased bath duty! When you are getting ready to bathe your pup you need to decide on a shampoo. There are a number of options available including oatmeal dog shampoos, organic dog shampoos, and others directed towards specific skin or fur needs. Dog shampoo reviews are a great source for choosing the best one for your family.

Don’t know how often to bathe your dog? Research their breed. Some dog’s coats are rich with protectant oils. Frequent bathing of these dogs will remove these oils and actually CAUSE irritation. Use common sense, when you smell a stinky dog, it is time for a bath.

Baths serve a couple important purposes past making your pup smell fresh. They stop fleas and ticks from taking hold and can soothe your dog’s itchy or flakey skin. If your dog does struggle with itchy skin, you may want to research dog shampoo reviews for the shampoo that will be just right for them.

Oatmeal dog shampoo is a great choice for dog’s struggling with itching and flaking. Colloidal oatmeal is used in oatmeal dog shampoo to stop your dog’s itching and scratching. Colloidal oatmeal is oatmeal that has been ground to a fine powder. This fine powder mixed with a liquid makes a creamy soft shampoo for your pooch’s skin.

Dog shampoo reviews for oatmeal dog shampoo will point you toward brands with only quality ingredients. Some “cheap” brands will advertise oatmeal but jam their product with filler. Natural shampoos or shampoos for sensitive skin are the best choices to avoid this. This is important since these fillers make it work against you by irritating your dog’s skin further.

You’ve done your research, read your dog shampoo reviews, it is time to get started bathing your pooch!

Pick a Location:

If you are lucky enough to be washing your pup on a warm day finding a spot outside is ideal. Spare your home the mess! On cooler day you will have to move your dog inside. For most this means the bathtub, if you have room and accommodations for your pup in a laundry room even better!

Get Set Up:

You want your dog to feel secure to make the bath experience the best it can be. A good way to do this is to lay bath mats down in your tub. This will prevent your dog from slipping in the tub, which can spook them and make the bathing experience difficult for both of you.

Shut the door if you are inside. This will prevent any runaway wet dogs from causing a mess in your home.

Fill your tub with a couple inches of warm water for your dog to stand in while you bathe them. Warm water will keep them most comfortable, for this reason avoid garden hoses for outside baths. What starts out as warm water quickly turns into ice cold water.

Head to Tail:

Wash your dog from head to tail, in that order. Your dog’s face is the most sensitive so clean it first with a fresh wash cloth. When you have finished their head move down their body scrubbing with oatmeal dog shampoo. This head to tail process will keep any potential fleas off of their face and help avoid potential eye infections.

It is very important to make sure you rinse your dog thoroughly. Even shampoo residues from soaps designed to soothe your dog’s skin, like oatmeal dog shampoo, can irritate your dog’s skin if they are allowed to dry there.

Once you’ve drained the bath water pat your pup dry with clean towels. Again using a separate clean towel for your dog’s face and head is best. You can use your hair dryer to get your dog completely dry. Make sure you don’t hold the hair dryer to close to your dog, and put it on its coolest setting. Burning your dog’s skin with a hair dryer is a very real possibility if you aren’t being careful.

Keeping your dog clean will keep both of you happy! Take advantage of your dog’s bath by using an oatmeal dog shampoo to soothe their itchy flakey skin in addition to just freshening up their smell. Choose your supplies carefully by reading dog shampoo reviews and looking at what others have to say. This will help you choose only the best for your favorite dog.
You bring your new dog home, make her comfortable, and spoil her with designer dog supplies you picked up for her. You want to do the right thing so you consult the experts they tell you to… PUT HER IN ANOTHER CAGE?! No way! Your sweet dog was just got out of a metal cage at the shelter you aren’t really going to put her back in to cage. That wouldn’t really be the best thing to do, right?

Wrong. Dogs are natural den animals. This means that in nature, a dog’s den is their safe place. It is where he retreats if he’s feeling anxious or unsure, sleeps, and raises pups. You can use your dog’s den behavior as an invaluable asset in training your dog, house training a dog, and addressing any dog behavior problems that might arise, such as chewing on the furniture or other destructive habits. In your home there is no reason crate training can’t be a peaceful happy experience.

Where should the crate go?

Your dog is also social by nature. Find a place for the crate in a room where you and the family spends a lot of your time such as a kitchen or living room. Shop designer dog supplies to find a crate that blends into your home. At night, bring your new dog’s crate into your bedroom so you can hear him and know when he needs to go out.

Crating your dog:

Depending on the age of your new family pet you will have a harder or easier time introducing a crate. A young puppy should be easy to introduce a crate to, they will want it to be their place. Remember that crying at first may be adjusting to an unfamiliar household not the crate. Do not reward barking or whining with attention! If you are positive he doesn't need to go to the bathroom, ignore him until he is quiet, then praise him or take him out of the crate. By doing this you won’t be rewarding barking or whining! Do not leave meals in the crate for your puppy. Most puppies will spill water left in the crate. A safe chew toy in the crate is a must. Use your crate for your new pup when they can’t be supervised or must be left alone.
You should never crate your pooch longer than you know he can wait to go to the bathroom, typically less than 4 hour periods during the day. Here is a tip if you need to leave them longer than this. Put the crate with the door open in an enclosed area that is easy to clean like a bathroom or laundry room. You can lay down newspapers in the room since you may have a clean-up on your hands.

Important tips for crating:
• A crate should not be used for punishment, it should only be a place from positive experiences

• Limit the amount of time your dog is in a crate. 3 hours for puppies, 4 hours for dogs.

• Remember a dog will not want to soil their den, being unable to use the outside facilities will cause your dog stress.

A crate can be a very positive experience for your dog. There are a wide variety of styles and sizes to choose from in designer dog supplies.
You take your dog to the vet when they are due for their regular check-ups and give them needed preventative care for heart worms, fleas, and ticks because you love them and want them healthy. It’s important to make sure your dog doesn’t get a tell tale itch! Dog skin problems are often itchy and one of the most common health problems for dogs. Mixed breed family pets are just as likely to experience a skin problem as a pure bred show dog.

The appearance of your dog’s coat can actually give away indications of their overall health. It is important to pay attention to your family pet’s skin to catch any growing problems early. While some can be simple to deal with others can become quite serious and even fatal if left untreated. Dog skin problems fall into several different categories.

The first is immune disorders. These skin issues are a result of problems with your dog’s immune system. This means your dog may be opened up to being effected by reoccurring skin conditions, such as some types of mange and other disorders. This category also includes dogs with allergies affecting their skin known as canine atopic dermatitis. While it would be ideal to have your dog avoid the allergen that is affecting them that is usually just not possible. There are a range of drugs and steroids available that will work to stop your dog’s immune systems inappropriate response to the offending allergen. However you may also find that shampoos can be of great help to a dog with skin allergies. Read dog shampoo reviews to determine what the best shampoo for you and your pooch are.

Second would be infectious skin diseases. These dog skin problems include parasitic, bacterial, fungal, and viral skin infections. Tick and flea infestations fall in this category. Ringworm, most common in puppies, is a fungal skin problem in this category.

A third category is hereditary skin diseases. Some dogs are just born with problems. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome for example. This disease involves failures in connective tissue specifically there is a problem with how collagen is produced. The dog may very easily bruise and have very poor healing of their skin if injured. Joint issues are also common with this disorder. Because of poor connective tissue sprains and pulls are more likely. Puppy strangles, a debilitating condition that appears usually around 6 weeks, also fits in this category.

Internal diseases is the last area. Some internal diseases express their symptoms through dog skin problems. This is yet another reason to carefully watch and have your dog’s skin conditions diagnosed. What may seem like a small irritation could in fact be a symptom of a much larger problem. Hormonal problems are prime offenders. This may be a range of different diseases or even tumors located on ovaries or testicles.

Remember spotting a problem early will save you and your dog a lot of stress. Be on the look out for persistent, non-stop scratching and any areas that appear particularly sore. They may be red or look swollen. Hair loss in areas where the skin is scaly, hard and rough, or oozing from the skin is a give away there is trouble.

Take your dog in to see the doctor if you suspect a skin problem. Treatment varies from medication, to change in environment, to change in soap! Dog shampoo reviews can show you the soap that will work best for sensitive skin.
Truly, on the effort scale this activity falls somewhere between lying on the couch stupefied by the latest reality show marathon and walking across the room to answer your cell phone because you can’t reach the darn thing with your foot. In other words: piece of cake.

But store bought dog shampoo isn’t always the best choice for your canine companion. Some dogs have allergies to the harsh ingredients that can be found in heavily processed washes, and other dogs may just have sensitive skin that dries out when foreign chemicals or fragrances are introduced. Luckily there is a wealth of dog shampoo recipes available, and with only a bit of sleuthing, one can easily find recipes for organic dog shampoo as well.

While individual recipes vary slightly, the majority of gentle, natural dog shampoos contain the following ingredients: any natural liquid dish soap, white vinegar, glycerin, and a whole lot of water. Generally these recipes can be made in a quart or gallon container (depending on how strong you want your wash) using one cup each dish soap and white vinegar, followed by a third cup glycerin. After filling the remainder of the container with water, simply mix the ingredients until well combined and store in reusable plastic shampoo bottles (available at many health food stores, drug stores, and dollar stores). If you seem to need a stronger shampoo, there are plenty of recipes that allow for a 1:1 cup ratio of water to soap and vinegar. Even at this concentration you will still end up with a shampoo far more gentle than the washes you will find in most stores. Glycerin can be purchased at most health food stores and pharmacies. If your pooch is having a particularly rough time of it skin-wise, you may want to also add a cup of colloidal oatmeal to your dog shampoo recipe. Colloidal oatmeal can be purchased premade, or you can make your own by simply grinding oatmeal (not instant!) into a fine powder.

Baking soda and cornstarch make for wonderful between bath dry shampoos. Simply sprinkle on your dog’s coat and brush through. Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful flea deterrent, and will keep your pooch smelling sweet-tart fresh!

Even dogs with healthy skin and a lustrous coat can benefit from a vacation from store bought pet shampoos. So, roll up your sleeves and give homemade dog shampoo a shot. We guarantee it will be worth the extra effort!
Shy dogs or fearful dogs usually react to people based on the person’s smell, size or physical attributes. If a shy or fearful dog feels threaten they will bark. If a dog continues to feel threaten, then fear aggression in dogs lead to dog bites. Many rescue dogs are sent to shelters because they have behavior issues as a result of fear.

How can fear aggression in dogs be remedied? The best remedy for a fearful dog is to first identify the type of people or things that trigger your dog’s fear. On a daily basis as your dog is exposed to these triggers you should give your dog a reward such as dog treats or your dog’s favorite toy. The positive reinforcement associated with the things and people that your dog fears will soon get your dog to no longer be one of the many fearful aggressive dogs.
One of those flop-eared, dotted and dappled, paws-too-big, wiry-furred charmers that can capture your heart in two seconds flat? In our humble opinion, absolutely nothing. At Dazzle Dog Delight, we’re big advocates for rescue pooches, and the kind-hearted folks who love them. And let’s face it, the sturdy, bushy-tailed, too-tall, too-short, smiley-faced pups you often find at shelters are about as mutty as mutts can get.

But adopting a mutt doesn’t mean that you don’t, well, wonder … what exactly did I get my hands on here? The reasons for finding out the breeds behind the mutt can range from the practical (breed-specific disorders and illnesses to watch out for) to mere curiosity. Setting out to identify your dog’s heritage can be educational as well as fun.

A simple Internet search shows numerous companies that offer DNA tests for dogs. Before you shell out the big bucks for this, though, consider the fact that these tests are controversial and there are as many folks out there claiming that they simply do not work as there are those who swear by them. A simpler (and cheaper) way of determining your dog’s background is to take note of his physical features, personality and behavioral traits, and general temperament and compare notes against a comprehensive breed directory. Both Animal Planet and the AKC have excellent breed directories and other helpful information.

So, if you’ve ever wondered, “What breed is my dog?” you’re certainly not alone and there are many resources available to assist you in identifying what’s lurking in Fido’s gene pool. So, whether it’s a bullypoodlechowlab or a beagleaussiecollie, remember you have a unique mix of dogs perfect in her own way. All hail the magnificent mutt!
Summer heat can cause health and comfort issues for us as humans, and for our beloved four legged friends. And since many areas deal with extreme temperatures, ranging from freezing cold to sweltering heat this is a real problem for many people!

Dogs have a much harder time cooling down than humans. This is because they can’t sweat like us. They can sweat only a tiny bit through their paws, but this is not nearly enough to cool them off. Panting is a dog’s main avenue for keeping cool. But panting isn’t very effective in hot and humid climates. The best thing to do on warm summer days is to keep your dog in the shade as much as possible. Your pup is still going to be want to be active, but when you go to the park try to limit activity between noon and 2 p.m. since it is the hottest part of the day. This will help to prevent heat stroke.

Want to do more? There are some wonderful dog gifts available to help your dog cool down during the worst of the summer heat. To start you can buy your canine friend a dog pool which is made of tough PVC. They are made to be transported easily so you can even take it on your summer vacation. The dog pools are also easy to fill with cool water and empty for clean up. This will keep your dog refreshed for hours. A pool is relaxing and will provide your dog comfort in the heat.

Humans enjoy a cool shower on a hot steamy day, treat your best friend to a nice cool bath. If your dog is ready for a bath take advantages of a warm day to soap him up with organic dog shampoo and cool him down! Choose an organic dog shampoo with tea tree oil to naturally relieve some skin irritations and conditions. That will also help your dog be more comfortable.

If you are living in a hot but dry climate cooling coats for dogs is another option. There are two types of cooling coats. The first one has fabric that absorbs water and then as the water evaporates it slowly releases it over a long period time. This evaporative cooling coat will work to keep your dog cool for hours. The second choice to beat the heat is to get a dog cooling coat that uses an advanced technology. This type of coat has specially designed inserts which release long-lasting, temperature-specific (58 degrees F, 14 degrees C), cooling relief. They are designed to fit inside the dog coat. You can purchase cooling, coat replacement packs.

If you cannot splurge on a cooling coat, then another designer dog summer gift item is a cooling bandana. These bandanas are made of a special material that absorbs water and then slowly releases the moisture over time. If you put the bandanna in the refrigerator it extends the time your pooch can stay cool. These bandanas are a hundred percent reusable. Just rinse and use a mild detergent on them after use and then dry it completely. There are several different styles to choose from featuring different designs or extras, like reflective tape for your dog’s safety.

Don’t let the summer heat catch you and your four legged pal unprepared! Remember to plan activity wisely for shaded places and cooler times of the day. And for extra comfort look into the following designer dog supplies. A pool designed to take rough play, organic dog shampoo to keep your dog’s skin in good shape through the heat wave, and a cooling coat or bandana all offer your dog relief on even the hottest day!

We all look forward to well-deserved vacations – heck, even traveling for work can be a welcome break from routine. However, I think we can admit that preparing for travel isn’t nearly as fun as the journey itself and often can be a downright pain. Throw a four-legged friend into the mix and the logistics of even the most well planned vacation suddenly seem daunting.

Lucky for Buster, pet travel has come a long way in recent years. There are numerous resources to help you plan a trip where your pooch not only survives, but thrives! Pet friendly airlines are becoming increasingly common. The website Bring Fido (www.bringfido.com) provides a comprehensive list of major airlines and their pet transportation policies (including weight limits and fees) as well as advice for air travel with dogs (cargo vs. cabin, sedation vs. non-sedation, etc.). Pet Airways (www.petairways.com) is a fairly new airline dedicated solely to the safe and comfortable transport of animals.

Pet friendly travel is not only “pawsible” it’s actually pretty easy to come by, if you know where to look. All Kimpton hotels (www.kimptonhotels.com) offer pet friendly lodging and the website Pets Welcome (www.petswelcome.com) provides exhaustive resources for happy travels with your furriest friend.

Whether your canine companion is in the car, in the cabin (plane or otherwise), or hanging out in cargo, Dazzle Dog Delight has a wide array of carriers and other supplies that can help ensure your dog’s trip is comfortable and safe. Check out our wide selection here: http://www.dazzledogdelight.com/backpacks.html.
Eye problems are often caused by bacterial or viral infections. Some of the most common dog eye problems are cataracts, corneal ulcers, in-grown eyelids, prolapse of the third eyelid, pink eye (conjunctivitis), red eye, and injury. This guide will provide you with some basic information about common dog eye problems, signs and possible treatments. Use this guide as a starting point, but remember that it is always best to seek the advice of your veterinarian.

It is usually pretty obvious if your dog is suffering from some sort of eye problems. Symptoms to look for to help determine if your dog is suffering from an eye problem include: squinting, excessive blinking, bulging eyes, closing or rubbing of the eyes, cloudiness, discharge and redness.

There are several steps you can take to prevent eye problems for your dog:
1. Make sure you dog is eating a healthy diet, including supplements. Foods such as leafy green vegetables, blue or purple berries, carrots, sesame or sunflower seeds are all beneficial for dog eye health. Supplements that are good for eye health include Bioflavonoids, Pycnogenols, Zinc, and Vitamins A, D and C. (Please seek the advice of your dog’s veterinarian before introducing any foods or supplements, especially if your dog is prone to allergies).

2. Clear the discharge or “gunk” away from their eyes. Use a warm, wet washcloth or cotton ball and wipe away any discharge. Wipe outward from the inside corner of the eye. You want to do this on a regular basis, daily is ideal.

3. Keep the hair around your dogs eyes trimmed. A dog’s hair can actually scratch the surface of their eyes, leading to irritation and even infection. Leaving this hair too long can also allow the “eye gunk” to build up which can also lead to problems. If you choose to trim your dogs hair yourself, make sure you always point the scissors down, away from your dog’s eyes to avoid injury.

4. Don’t let your dog stick his head out the car window. I know, I know, dogs LOVE this, however, be aware that wind can be irritating to your dogs eyes, and debris could blow into his eyes and cause damage. It is safer to crack your windows enough to allow your dog to enjoy the breeze and smells, but now allow him to stick his head out.

5. Try to avoid products that are irritating to your dogs eyes. When looking for items such as shampoo, it’s a good idea to get on-line and search for dog shampoo reviews to find out what other dog owners are saying. You might also want to try an organic dog shampoo made with natural ingredients, so you know you are using the healthiest options for your dogs grooming.

6. Dog goggles are a great option to protect your dog’s eyes during potentially hazardous activities like hunting, or when riding in the car so you can let them stick their heads out the window. Dog goggles can also be helpful after surgery or an injury as they can shield the eyes from further irritation from foreign objects, wind and sun.

So, you clean your dog’s eyes out every day, feed him the healthiest diet possible, use only the most natural, organic dog shampoo and your dog still has eye problems! Don’t beat yourself up, it is bound to happen to just about every dog. Below is a list of possible treatments your vet may suggest, as well as some things you can do yourself before and after you see your vet.
1. The first thing to do is call your vet. He or she will probably have some questions for you over the phone, and then schedule an appointment to see your dog.

2. If you can see something in your dog’s eye, try to wash it out with saline solution or artificial tears.

3. Do not try to pull anything out of your dog’s eye! If there is something lodged or stuck in your dog’s eye get to your vet immediately. If you try to pull it out yourself you could cause further damage. Once the foreign object is removed, the area is susceptible to bacteria, so you want to be at the vet’s office for proper treatment.

4. A warm damp compress can be helpful and soothing to sore and inflamed eyes. Cover each affected eye for five minutes with a warm damp compress. If you dog doesn’t like having both eyes covered, you can do one eye at a time. Make sure you always use a clean cloth.

5. Protect your dog from fleas and ticks. There are many reasons to keep your dog free of fleas and ticks, and one of those reasons that you may not know about is eye health. Fleas and ticks can cause pink eye, or conjunctivitis.

6. You will need to protect your dog from doing further damage to her eye. She may need to wear an Elizabethan collar, commonly known as a cone, to protect her from herself. A dog with an injured or irritated eye may continue to try to rub her eye causing more injury and irritation.

It is very important to take care of your dog’s eye health. If you follow these prevention guidelines, and take the appropriate steps in the cases of irritation or injury, you can help ensure your dog many healthy, happy years of playing fetch and chasing bunnies!
If calories that come in are not burned off they (unfortunately) stay on – and rarely in the places we would like to keep them. We all know this and yet, somehow, many of us are still – to use a euphemism lent to us by our canine friends – “husky.” We are bombarded on a daily basis with information on the latest weight loss diets and quick-fix “easy ways to lose weight” schemes. But there is one simple weight loss tool that rarely gets discussed that many of us already have in our homes – a pooch!

Many people enjoy walking to lose weight. It is an inexpensive, healthful way to get outdoors and trim your waistline. But both formal studies and anecdotal evidence have shown that people are more likely to exercise regularly if they are accountable to someone else (that’s why exercise “buddy systems” are so successful). And let’s face it; it is infinitely harder to say “no” to your dog than it is to a friend. Your friend won’t put your tennis shoe in her mouth and stare up at you with big sorrowful eyes if you have to cancel your walking date at the last minute – your dog will. And that can be one powerful motivator.

Dogs are naturally healthy, vivacious animals. In order to be an effective dog owner, it helps to emulate a bit of that effervescent verve. The more time you spend with your animal outdoors, the more time you spend playing and engaged with your canine companion, the happier you and your dog (and your belt buckle) will be. With all the complicated discussions of how to lose weight filling the air, it benefits us to examine the simple things we can do to live a healthy lifestyle. Our dogs want nothing more than to take us on a nice jog through the park followed by a rousing game of Chewie Chase (a favorite at our house). So, the next time you’re plopped on the couch wondering how you’re going to shed those last few pounds, grab the leash, grab your furry pal, and head for the hills! You’ll be well on your way to a happier, fitter you, not to mention having one grateful pooch.
As more and more people become aware of the plight of unwanted animals, dog adoptions have become increasingly popular. Practically, dog adoption can be an economical as well as humane choice. The cost to adopt a dog is a mere fraction of the amount one has to pony up to purchase a purebred pup. And while it is certainly not advisable to adopt a dog because it is “cheaper” (rescue dogs can have both behavioral and physical maladies that may be expensive to treat), the initial sticker shock is far less shocking when you bring home a grateful little shelter mutt.

As with so many things these days, the Internet is a great place to start your dog adoption adventure. Researching dog adoption shelters, free dog adoption centers, and finding the right dog adoption website is as easy as double-clicking! For example, the website Petfinder.com (www.petfinder.com) can show a hopeful dog lover what pooches are available for adoption in his area. The search radius can be set as close or far from your home as you choose. Petfinder.com allows users to search by animal, breed, age, size, gender, special considerations (e.g. not housetrained, good with kids), and what other animals are already in the home.

Before considering a dog adoption you want to consider whether your life and home are ready to welcome a canine family member. Before bringing a dog into the house you want to make sure you have picked up a few basic essentials including: leash, extra long training leash, food, food and water dishes, brush, bedding, and an ID collar or collar and ID tag.

The decision to adopt a dog can lead to an amazing companionship that will enrich your life for many years to come. And with the prevalence of dog adoption websites, the early stages of researching your dog rescue options are as easy as 1-2-click!
Dogs burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime, sometimes causing dehydration. Feeding your dog a little bit more dog food during the cold weather and making sure your dog has plenty of water to drink will help to keep your dog well-hydrated, and his skin less dry.

Leaving your dog outside for a long period of time in the cold weather.
Dogs are domesticated animals and are not meant to be outdoors all day long regardless of clothing. Snow and Ice can make a dog lose their scent and they can easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure your dog always wears a dog collar with ID tags.

Taking your dog out in the snow without dog boots or paw protection.
Guard against paw injury by using dog paw protectors or dog boots for snow when walking your dog in winter. The salt and sand used on icy sidewalks can be highly abrasive and damaging to a dog's paws. There are alternatives to dog snow boots. You could spray non-flavored cooking spray on the dog’s paws or use Musher's Wax. Both are good at preventing ice from building up and sticking to a dog's paws. Wipe your dog’s feet with a towel after they have been out playing in the snow so ice or salt do not stick to their paws.

Exposing your dog to antifreeze which is a lethal poison for dogs.
Please be sure to clean up any antifreeze spills from your car, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Many dogs dislike going outside during winter because snow, salt and chemical de-icers hurt their paws.

Taking your dog outdoors without a sweater | coat or buying one that does not fit properly.
Buying a dog a coat that is the wrong size can have the same impact as your dog not wearing a coat at all. When you are purchasing a dog coat take into consideration both your dog’s body weight and measure from their neck to the base of their tail. A proper fitting sweater | coat keeps your dog’s skin from becoming dry and also retains body heat.
You bring her home, let her sniff around, and now, according to the experts, you’re supposed to … PUT HER IN ANOTHER CAGE?! No way! You just rescued that pretty pup FROM a cold, metal cage – the last thing you are going to contemplate is putting her back INTO one! Right?

Wrong. Dogs are by nature den animals. In nature, a dog’s den is where he retreats if he’s feeling anxious, sleeps, and raises pups. In your home, a dog’s den can be an invaluable asset in training your dog, house training a dog, and addressing any dog behavior problems that might arise, such as chewing on the furniture or other destructive habits. With a little training and a little more patience, crate training your dog can be a peaceful, positive experience for both you and the pooch!

When crate training a dog, there are a few important things to remember. A crate should never be used as punishment and should only have positive associations for the dog. A dog should not be crated for an extended period of time (puppies max out at around three hours). If you crate a dog for too long, she will eventually need to relieve herself, and dogs get very upset if they soil their “dens.” Once your pet has settled in to her routine, and you feel satisfied that all behavior issues have been addressed, the crate can become a place your dog retreats to voluntarily.

A crate can easily become your dog’s best friend, and there are a wide variety of styles and sizes to choose from.
