7 Tips for Keeping Your Dog Warm in the Winter

By Emmy E Bill

When it's cold outside, all you want to do is go home, curl up in a warm bed and sip on hot chocolate? But what about dogs, how do they feel about the cold winter months? Some dogs live their lives primarily outdoors so they need and want to spend time outside every day. However, certain dogs are more negatively affected by the cold than others; particularly older pets or those with certain conditions like arthritis. There are plenty of ways for you to keep your dog warm this winter, follow the steps below!

1) Consider adopting a cold weather dog.

If you don't have a dog yet and you live in a cold climate, you could consider getting a dog that is bred to handle well and enjoy cold weather. Alaskan malamutes, Siberian huskies, and chow chows are great dogs for cold climate dwellers.

2) House your dog indoors.

Even though you may keep your dog outside when the weather is nice, you may not want to do this when it's cold. Housing your dog inside the house is the best way to keep him warm during the winter.

3) Pet jackets and sweaters.

It might sound silly, but there are cute garments like jackets and sweaters you can purchase to keep your pets warm; there is even waterproof clothing you can put on them for play time in the snow.

4) Invest in proper outdoor housing.

If your dog absolutely has to spend a lot of time outdoors, make sure he has proper shelter. Consider getting a doghouse with a sloped roof, insulation and possibly a heater (make sure the heater is 100% safe and meant for being run outdoors).

5) Soft bedding off the floor.

Keep your dog warm by placing soft bedding a few inches off the cold floor.

6) Make sure he's getting enough food.

Some dogs burn more calories during the winter while they're trying to stay warm. This may make him hungrier, so feed him a little more in the winter months if it seems he needs it.

7) Don't forget to give him attention.

Nothing keeps a dog warmer than a caring, playful, and attentive owner. Make sure you don't forget about your pet if you put him outside, and when the weather is really cold, let him stay inside.

Cold weather isn't always fun to deal with, especially for animals. Although they love playing in the snow, it's not as fun when they are cold. Also remember, dog's can get colds and various illnesses like humans.
Home Remedies For Dog Constipation

By Ethan Allen

There comes a time in everyone's life when constipation rears its ugly head. The same holds true for dogs, unfortunately. Lack of exercise and proper diet can lead to bouts of constipation (sound familiar?). While you may seek a variety of ways to "eliminate" this problem in your own life, let's explore some home remedies for dog constipation which can be utilized in the eventuality it occurs in theirs.

As mentioned earlier, a proper diet and exercise are key components in ensuring your dog has the ability to move his bowels as often as necessary. House dogs usually need to be walked twice a day while maintaining a proper diet. If your dog becomes constipated, one method to alleviate this problem is by adding one to two teaspoons of bran to his meal. This allows for extra moisture in the stool.

Another method to soften the stool would be to add psyllium (Metamucil in the adult world) to his diet. Half a teaspoon twice a day, in addition to drinking plenty of water, will suffice. A third option would be mineral oil. This may be used in cases where there is a large build-up of hard stool. Two teaspoons, twice a day should be added to his meal, but for only a week. There are several other steps you can take to alleviate your dog's constipation. Keep his food moist by adding a bit of water. If your dog is getting on in years, add some raw meat and vegetables to his diet.

There are certain signs which can alert you to potential problems, and for which you can take immediate steps. Long hair on dogs can cause feces to become entangled; therefore, keep your dog properly groomed. Dogs tend to eat everything in sight, ensure no bones or other material has been ingested. Just as we experience constipation due to certain medications, dogs are no exception. Psychological stress is another indicator relating to constipation.

While it has been suggested that all breeds and dogs of any age are prone to constipation, there are other aspects which you may need to consider, and for which many dog owners are culpable. Never feed your dog from the dinner table. While you may indulge the dog with a few scraps here and there, you are contributing to his constipation.

Foods that contain flour, sugar, rice, dairy and high protein are the main source of the problem. Ice cream, cookies, bread, chocolate, or other unhealthy food items can cause your dog unnecessary pain. As mentioned earlier, a lack of fiber and dehydration are common causes. Another cause for concern would be a condition known as mega colon. This simply means your dog has an inflamed colon which prevents the discharge of feces.

The time to visit the vet will become evident when your dog's inability to defecate is hampered by a decreased appetite, passing blood in minimal amounts, and overall lethargy. Keep in mind, contributing to the overall health of your dog should be of the utmost importance. A dog's love is unconditional, therefore, he or she is totally dependent upon you to maintain a healthy and harmonious life. Be ever vigilant to any signs of stress and ensure his diet and exercise regimen is appropriate and on-going.

Concerned about your pet's health? Ethan recommends "boning up" on holistic pet health care [http://www.natureshealthypet.com] right away at: [http://www.natureshealthypet.com]

Commercial foods are bad for your dog's health and can get your dog constipated

We’ve been hearing a lot about the benefits of putting our dogs on a raw food diet . I bet a lot of you have even considered trying it or are wanting to try it, but are worried about the cost in time and money, and the issue of food contamination.

So I was excited to have come across this book by Maggie Rhines called “Going Rawr! Dog Lover's Compendium". Forget about stuffy old textbooks. This book, which is available in downloadable format, goes into the practical nitty gritty of feeding your dog raw food. It has great lists and tips on how to start and keep your dog on this type of diet – from sourcing your food, handling, preparing, storing and serving it. And no matter if your dog is a day-old pup or a grand daddy, you’ll be feeding him healthy raw food in no time at all!

Most breeds of dogs are born to work. They’d be miserable if you just let them pass the day by without any kind of exercise or activity to do. Dogs function best if they are given a responsibility, something which not all dog owners agree with. They prefer seeing their dogs playing all day than give them some sense of purpose. This is one reason why owning a dog goes beyond just buying one because it’s cute. Dog owners should be committed enough to train and exercise their best friends. Here are the top 10 breeds that are best for committed dog owners.

10. Australian Cattle Dog – This breed of dog is very easy to train but they require a lot of exercise. They were originally bred as herding dogs, to drive wild cattle over long distances, which is also one reason why it has developed powerful jaws for biting. As a herding dog, this breed is very agile and energetic.

9. Rottweiler – This breed has an unfairly negative reputation caused by irresponsible dog ownership. The truth is that this large breed is actually very lovable. They can be very attached to their family and friends. Just like any man’s best friend, they are very protective of their loved ones and strangers will be wary to approach if they haven’t been properly introduced yet. They require minimal grooming but as active breeds, they need to be exercised regularly.

8. Papillon – Don’t be fooled by the cuteness of this small breed. The papillon can be very scary and tough if it wants too. The butterfly ears are one of the breed’s most distinct characteristics, fluttering once it runs and plays around in the field. This companion dog is perfect for the indoors but it also loves to play in the outdoors.

7. Labrador Retriever – Aside from being the 7th smartest dog breed, the Labrador Retriever has been one of the most popular breeds in America in the past years. In fact, the American Kennel Club ranked it as the most popular breed for both 2010 and 2011. Labrador Retrievers make excellent guide dogs for the blind and they are also masters of the search-and-rescue operations of the law enforcement.

6. Shetland Sheepdog – This highly trainable breed is also lovingly nicknamed, “Sheltie.” With loyalty and alertness as its top qualities, the Shetland Sheepdog is very smart and intelligent that its owners can swear they can rival those of humans. This breed is so agile yet it’s very sturdy. While they excel most in farms, herding flocks of farm animals, it is still adaptable to many living conditions as long as its regular exercise needs are met.

Stop Unwanted barking by training your dog. Exercise your pet regularly and keep him stimulated by exercising his mental faculties. Obedience training is something pet owners can accomplish themselves, as long as they are dedicated enough to spend hours and hours teaching their pets the right behavior and attitude.

Continuing from our previous post, here’s the remaining list of the 10 most intelligent breeds of dogs.

5. Doberman Pinscher – This breed is large and very muscular, enough to intimidate anyone who comes near it. If properly bred and trainer, Dobermans will not just be your best friend. They will protect you with their lives too. Also used as police dogs, Dobermans possess great endurance, making running for criminals a probably fun activity for them.

4. Golden Retriever – A golden retriever’s temperament is perfect for kids, making it the ideal family dog. It ranks as the 4th most popular breed in the US by AKC and not without reasons. Golden retrievers are not only smart, but they are so eager to please their owners, which is why they can do a wide range of dog duties – guides for blind people and members of search-and-rescue teams, just to name a few. Like any large breed, golden retrievers need to be exercised regularly. Its water-repellant double coat sheds seasonally, making grooming a regular bonding activity with his owner and him.

3. German Shepherd – German Shepherds are often seen accompanying policemen during search-and-rescue operations but regular citizens can also attest to the endearing qualities of this breed. Ranked as the second most popular breed in America for the last two years, this breed is considered as “the world’s leading police, guard and military dog.” German Shepherds are perfect for families too because they love children and their energy makes them ideal companions for growing kids.

2. Poodle – If you think Poodles are just for show, you are very wrong. This exceptionally smart breed excels in obedience training, making it the second leader in the bunch. The hypoallergenic coat is perfect for those who have allergic reactions. It’s the ideal family pet because its energy can equally match those of active kids who like running around and playing with anything they come in contact with.

1. Border Collie – The most intelligent breed in the pack, the Border Collie is extremely energetic, acrobatic, and athletic. They were bred to herd sheep, excelling in sheepdog trials. It made history when a Border Collie was said to have learned over 1000 words in January of 2011. This breed requires daily exercise and owners are required to train collies to exercise their mental faculties. As herders, they have the potential to chase anything that moves so making them pets in busy cities may not be the best idea.

These breeds were ranked as the smartest, most intelligent breeds by Stanley Cohen, author of the bestselling book, The Intelligence of Dogs. Dog owners, with the right attitude and dedication, can stop dogs behaving badly and displaying bad behavior by training them as soon as they get past the puppy stage. Unwanted dog barking, toy chewing, and poop-consumption can easily stop if you are committed enough to train your best friends.

Every dog needs exercise. Most trainers and canine experts recommend at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise for your dog (provided your dog is healthy enough to endure exercise) every single day. This can provide numerous behavior and health benefits. It should be noted that the walk is more valuable than other types of exercise (such as chasing the ball or running with other dogs at the dog park) because it offers training opportunities and helps to build the human and animal bond. However, proper dog walking is a little more complicated than just putting on the leash and heading out the front door. For the best results, consider some of the following best practices:

* Always walk with your dog beside you or behind you. You are the leader and the dog is the follower. When the dog is out in front, this helps reinforce the idea that they are in control of the relationship.

* Try not to walk your dog in the heat of the day. Canines do have sweat glands like people. In addition to that, they are stuck with a fur coat year round. As such, try not to walk them during the hottest time of the day, especially in the summer. It may not be a bad idea to bring water along for the dog to drink if showing signs of overheating.

* Do not play tug of war. There should typically be a bit of slack in the leash. If your dog is constantly pulling you and you are providing tension back - this is a behavioral issue that needs to be corrected. Consult with a trainer or professional if you are unable to remedy this yourself.

* Beware of other dogs. Do not let your pet approach other animals on a whim. Make sure that you have cleared it with the other dog's owner before allowing your animals to do a meet and greet. Just because your dog plays well with others does not mean that other dogs will respond in kind.

* Pick the right leash or collar. Not every leash / collar combination is perfect for every dog. Some dogs will view harnesses as a challenge to pull. Others may find a pincher collar to be too rough and painful. The collar that is typically the best fit for your dog is the one that provides the greatest amount of comfort while still generating the intended responses.

* Make sure your dog is wearing their tags. Even if you have the best behaved dogs, weird things can happen. You could be distracted and the dog may slip its leash chasing after another animal or something of that ilk. Make sure it is wearing its vaccination and identification tags to ensure the highest probability of its safe and timely return.

* Don't be afraid to make a pit stop. This is especially true if you are just starting. Your animal may need a break to rest and get a drink.

* Finally - have fun! The walk is a good opportunity for you and your pet to get exercise. It also represents a great bonding experience with your four legged best friend. They will appreciate it more than you will ever know.

Do you have a dog that is prone to urinary problems? Are you wondering how you can treat dog urinary problems and yet at the same time prevent them from recurring? Do you want to know what kind of diet will lower the risk of urinary problems and improve your dog's health? You will find the answers to these questions in this article.

If your dog is suffering from a urinary problem, you can choose to treat it with either prescription drugs and natural remedies.

Treating dog with urinary problem with prescription drugs

Most of us have got used to the idea of treating canine urinary problems with antibiotics. This is a necessary specific therapy that will help to eliminate infection from the body. There is a chance that your dog will not tolerate a particular antibiotic well, although a veterinarian can adjust the medication as needed.

Treating dog with urinary problem with natural remedies

Natural remedies differ from antibiotics in a number of ways. Unlike antibiotics, they do not specifically address the infection. Instead, homeopathic products are formulated to support the health of the urinary system, so that your dog can naturally keep bacteria from colonizing or taking hold in the urinary tract.

They are not used instead of antibiotics, but with antibiotics to reduce the severity of symptoms and strengthen the a dogs urinary system to the point where it naturally protects itself from infection. In the case of mild infection, this might be all you need, although this is more a decision for you and your veterinarian and the results of any testing such as an urinalysis.

When purchasing a natural remedy, avoid any product that contains chemicals, flavors, colors, or any other additives. The product you choose should contain 100% natural ingredients and should be free of chemicals. Look for a product that contains well-known homeopathic remedies like berberis vulg, uva ursi, cantharis, and staphysagris. Also make sure the product you choose is manufactured in a GMP compliant laboratory under the supervision of qualified pharmacists and homeopaths.

Visit the manufacturer's website before you buy their products and look for information such as customer testimonials and money back guarantee details. These are some of the factors that indicate that the manufacturer is confident of the quality of their product.

Along with conventional and supportive treatment approaches, make sure you are feeding your dog a high quality AAFCO certified dog food from a reputable manufacturer. Also, make sure that your dog has a constant supply of clean water. Add some berry based juice to the water for extra protection, as berries have properties that help to keep bacteria from clinging to the bladder walls.

What you need to remember is very simple. The combination of healthy food, clean water, and a regular dose of homeopathic remedies can contribute to the way you treat dog urinary problems and stop them from recurring. Initially use a specific therapy such as antibiotics to treat any infection, particularly in more advanced cases. So, follow the tips given above and take good care of your dog.

Buying commercial dog toys [http://www.dogtoys-4less.com] can be very expensive at times. You are also not 100% sure if they are safe to your canine pet. Some dog toys contain deadly toxins and chemicals that may be detrimental to your dog's health. Other pet chews and toys also have lead components that can cause vomiting, poor appetite and dog's diarrhea.

Though dog toys are not a necessity, they can play an important role in sustaining your dog agility while training him to be independent and boosting his confidence. They can also provide entertainment and keep your dog preoccupied and physically active all day long.

To make sure that the toys you give to your k9 are safe and non-toxic, why not make simple homemade dog toys yourself? Here are a few ideas on how to make dog toys from recyclable materials that can be found in comfort of your home:

Rope Dog Toy

To make this simple homemade dog toy, an old towel or handkerchief and scissors will be needed. Cut about 4 inches of strips of towel along the end then bundle the strips together to create a knot. Afterwards, braid your strips together and until 3 inches from the end. Voila, as simple as that, you have a nice little rope dog toy!

Gutless Fleece Dog Toy

You will need 9 feet of rope and a can of 3 tennis balls. Begin by placing one tennis ball in a clamp. With the use of a drill, make a hole through the tennis ball. Next, thread the rope through the holes. Tie a simple knot near the ball. Knot the ends of the rope to avoid fraying. Finally, tie a second knot near the ends of the rope.

Water Bottle Dog Toy

Making this homemade dog toy is so easy. All you need are an empty water bottle and popcorn kernels. The bottle can either be small or large in size. Start by unscrewing the top off the bottle and place about a tablespoon of popcorn kernels inside.

Rope Dog Chews

If you have old ropes that are not being used, tie several knots at each end to make a homemade dog toy for fetching and chewing.

The abovementioned ideas for homemade dog toys can help you save a great deal of money. Bear in mind, however, that you need to supervise your dog whenever he plays with these homemade dog toys. Check them for any damage to avoid choking or the ingestion of parts.

Heart worms in Dogs - What They Are & What to Do For Your Pet

Heart worms are parasitic worms that happen to be well-known in both cats and dogs. Like their specific name suggests, they reside in the animals heart, usually free-floating inside the right ventricle and also surrounding blood vessels. The worms can be transmitted from dog to dog from mosquitoes which pass the worm larvae through their saliva. Currently the presence of this worm can be very dangerous to your dog's health. Despite the fact that the pet will not display signs of illness until it has advanced considerably, this parasite can easily be deadly and are sometimes hard to detect and diagnose.

Symptoms of Infection of Heart worms in Dogs:

When a dog is first carrying the parasitic worm, your dog will show no signs.Even a blood test can't detected them in the beginning stages. When the worm larva reaches the heart and matures, however, signs that are detectible by X-ray start to develop quickly. This also includes damage to the blood vessels around the heart and lungs. It is rare that your dog will be infected by only one worm and because the mature worms within the heart grow larger and number, the conditions worsen, eventually causing a blockage of blood flow. It is typically at this point where the dog will begin to display physical signs which can include pain, hypertension, trouble with breathing, lethargy or even fainting. In extremely progressed cases the puppy or dog can end up with having a major heart problem by the time this disease has reached this stage and the owner has probably realized that something is happening and sought veterinary care, but in some cases this might be to late and the dog has died.

Treating The Worms in Dogs:

After the dog is diagnosed as having heart worms, treatment needs to be started. What this treatment is and just how it is administered depends on the stage of the infection.

Generally, there are four stages of this disease.

Stage One - Dogs at the lowest risk - the worms are detected in X-rays but all other tests appear normal.

Stage Two - Dogs are moderately infected, sometimes have some difficulty breathing and be demonstrating coughing.

Stage Three - Dogs are severely affected & may display weight reduction, have a problem breathing, blood tests likely show kidney and/or liver damage.

Stage Four - Dogs have Vena Cava Syndrome and are also in shock, essentially dying - surgery may be undertaken to get rid of worms, but there is no promise that it'll save your dog.

In the case of heart worms in dogs, prevention truly is one of the best medicine. The perfect time to start with a preventative treatment is at the start of puppy-hood, before the dog is seven months old since dogs older than seven months are at a great risk for side effects to the preventative treatments.

Tips on how to Prevent Heart worms in Dogs:

Regular preventive treatments work nicely and are highly recommended by veterinarians. They'll save you the expense of rescue treatments, and more importantly, could possibly help your pet avoid a great deal of pain. The majority of preventive treatments kill any immature worms that enter the body, before they have a chance to grow and cause serious damage. Besides, most monthly heart worm preventives have activity against intestinal parasites, as stated by the American Heart worm Society (AHS). Many of these intestinal parasites could also infect people--another good reason to utilize preventive treatments. There are a number of FDA-approved heart worm preventives in the marketplace, in a wide variety of different formulations. These include daily or monthly chewable tablets like HeartGuard or monthly topical (skin) treatments. In case you have trouble remembering a monthly treatment, ask your vet about injections that provide protection up to six months. Your veterinarian can help choose the best preventive treatment and method of administration for your own dog. Before placing your family dog on heart worm preventive, your veterinarian will likely conduct a simple blood screening to make certain your puppy isn't already infected. Using preventive treatments with infected dogs won't kill existing adult heart worms and may cause severe complications. Your veterinarian may schedule regular tests in the future to ensure your canine remains heart worm free.

New tips for picking up dog waste are sorely needed. We have been following the same procedure and using the same mode of operation for far too long for this necessary task. The dog poop bags will remain the same. There has been a huge variety available for years, including biodegradable, scented, colored or even patterned options. It is what we decide to do with these dog waste bags that will change. These new tips will propel us into the future as we happily endorse these changes.

The first needed tip is how we remember to carry how dog poop bags and how we choose to carry them. Remembering to bring them with us on our outings has always been a challenge. Hopefully, they are stored by our leash so we remember to scoop them up as we head out the door with our canine friend. However, often we forget and must return back home when we remember. Or sadly, we do not remember until our best friend has done their daily duty and then we quickly walk away in the hopes that no one else was watching us. Unfortunately, this is a very common occurrence and one that has increased the environmental and health dangers caused by dog waste. Remembering our bags is vitally important for us and for others. Once we have remembered our bags, our choice of how to carry them is also important. Stuffing them in our pockets must change. The potential to weaken or tear the bag which will be holding our pet feces is increased by treating them in this way.

Remembering and carrying our bags is now made much simpler and safer with the explosion of dog poop bags holders on the market. This unique poop pouch will have a constant supply of poop bags in the interior pocket, so remembering the bags on every outing is a thing of the past. And the secure and safe storage and way to carry the bags will properly protect them from tears or rips.

Our second tip is what we do with our poop bags once they are full of dog poop. We have usually tied them to our leash or held them in our hand while walking home or to the nearest receptacle. This too must change. Dog waste contains many disease-causing organisms including bacteria, parasites, worms and their eggs. These dog poop bags must be protected from breakage, spillage, rips or tears. They are also an ugly, medieval site to be displaying to others as we walk along.

The new dog waste bags holder will protect the bags full of pet feces and also protect the sight of others by removing the disgusting dog poop bags from their view. And the new poop pouch will accept more than one bag.

Our third tip concerns our health after using our dog poop bags. Dog poop causes disease and it causes many more diseases than those caused by human feces. Yet we wash our hands after using toilet facilities and haven't been doing the same after handling dog poop. This too must change. We must wash our hands after picking up after our canine friend.

The sanitary dog poop bags holder has room for a small bottle of hand sanitizer. This is simple and easy to use and must be used every time after handling dog waste. Since it is carried at all times in our poop pouch and is also easily and readily available, this practice will become widely accepted once we make it a part of our routine and display its importance to others.

Bonus tip: The dog waste bags holder also has room for other needed necessities when out with our best friend. There are interior & exterior pockets for dog training supplies, treats, park passes, wallets, cell phones and more. There is also a handy clip for keys, flashlights or a dog poop bags dispenser. This extra storage in our poop pouch which is always carried with us will also be appreciated.

New ways of doing things will be gladly accepted if they make our lives more pleasant, safer and healthier. For these reasons, these new tips for using our dog poop bags have been readily accepted and appreciated by many. Consider adding this new and unique poop pouch to your life with your canine companion and add a bit more pleasure and sparkle to your life. And while you are picking up dog waste, also help teach others they ways of the future.

Please consider this new, discreet, convenient and safe way to carry your dog poop bags and your hand sanitizer.

This convenient poop pouch will safely and discreetly carry your poop bags and also has interior and exterior pockets for empty plastic bags, dog training supplies and an inverted bottle of hand sanitizer, along with a handy clip for a dog poop bags dispenser, keys or a flashlight. This is the new way to carry your dog waste bags. It is convenient, discreet, and sanitary

Does your dog have breath like death warmed over? Do you cringe when she gives you doggy kisses? Is her breath making your kids faint? Then it's time to do something about your dog's breath. Luckily, there are some answers.

Dogs can have bad breath for lots of reasons. One of the most basic reasons is because they are eating some very foul things. Do you know what your dog has been eating? For instance, does your dog eat dog poop outside? Does your dog get in the cat litter box? These are two common causes of bad doggy breath and they are both preventable.

If your dog is eating doggy poop outside you should do the following:

1. Make sure you keep your yard picked up. Pick up poop as fast as your dogs make it so they won't have a chance to eat it.

2. If your dog still finds poop to eat, add some pineapple or meat tenderizer to his food. Both of these ingredients will make poop taste unappetizing to him (as if it needs something to make it taste bad!). Or, you can look for products for this purpose at your pet supply store.

3. Make sure that cat litter boxes are kept in places where your dog cannot get to them, such as a special room for the cat, or in high places.

Finally, check to see if your dog is eating other nasty-tasting things outside. Is he eating dead birds or dead squirrels? If your dog is eating carrion or rotting flesh then it could very easily give him bad breath.

Next, check your dog's teeth. What do they look like? If you have a young dog then your dog's teeth should be pearly white. Even older dogs should have teeth that are mostly white, though they may show some signs of wear. If your dog has teeth that are brown, yellow, green or which have obvious cavities or broken teeth; you have likely found the source of your dog's bad breath. You need to take your dog to the vet. He may do doggy dental work himself or he may refer you to a doggy dentist.

In some cases your dog may simply need his teeth cleaned. This is usually done by giving your dog anesthesia and scaling all of his teeth while he's asleep. Your dog can also fix any cavities or pull any bad teeth while your dog is asleep. In some cases a dog may need a root canal in order to save a tooth.

Most dogs will need their teeth cleaned by a vet at least once in their lives. Good dental care will prevent bacteria from these bad teeth from getting into your dog's bloodstream and going to his heart. As your dog ages, bad teeth can also prevent him from eating, so it's very important to keep your dog's teeth in good shape.

If your dog's teeth aren't at this dire stage you can still make his breath better by starting to care for his teeth regularly. If you brush your dog's teeth at least once a week with dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush you can avoid most dental problems and keep his breath nice.

There are also a number of good dental chews recommended for dogs that can help to freshen their breath. Check your pet supply store for dental chews for dogs and other things to freshen your dog's breath.

Tristan Andrews is a freelance author who writes about dog information and dog training.

Finally, check what you're feeding your dog. Canned food tends to stick to your dog's teeth more and can cause bad breath. Dry food may be slightly better from a breath stand point. People who feed a raw diet say that their dogs have the cleanest teeth and the freshest breath.

Dogs are pack animals and thus social by nature. However, just as with people, some dogs socialize better than others. Some dogs even have problems socializing with the other sex (That sounds human!). Still considering that dog are pack animals it is weird that some dogs find it difficult to get acquainted to other dogs.

Dog owners often have other dogs and pets visiting or living with them. To make sure all animals live peacefully together is not something that happens on its own. When on top of that your neighbours' dog visits your premises every now and again and the ocasional cat wandering through the garden, you better be prepared.

To prevent potential problems you better prepare your dog by socializing him as soon as possible. When dogs grow up, very much like adults, it's more difficult for them to learn the rules of social behavior. It's very important to expose your dog at the earliest age possible to other people and dogs. When they are still puppies the whole world is new and wonderful and they are very open to new experiences.

When your puppy has received all his vaccines it time to meet other dogs and people. It is important that many different people touch him especially in sensitive places like ears, toes and close to the eyes. This will make the visit to the vet much easier. Off course he needs to meet as many other dogs and animals as possible.

Dogs like to sniff each other. When they're about to meet another dog you should control the set until you're confident that both dogs won't start fighting. Only after that you can let them explore the other dog.

If your puppy likes to jump on or bite other dogs, see if the other dog corrects him in a gentle dog manner. You should only interfere when one of the dogs is at the point of getting injured. Just stay near your puppy for an emergency intervention, just in case. You might want to bring a pair of gloves if you expect fighting.

Sometimes they start barking which can be annoying. You can try to make him stop by giving him a treat or give him his favorite squeeky toy. If that doesn't help, just go home and come back the following day. You'll have to learn what works best for your dog, because each dog is different when it comes to behaving around other dogs. Just take your time and learn how your dogs socializes best.

If you have a (adult) dog that comes from a rescue shelter and you don't know his past you might need more time to teach him proper dog behavior. Many of these type of dogs have had bad experiences in the past and it might take them some more time to trust other dogs and humans again. They might be violent or shy, but whatever the way they react, bear in mind that many of these dogs turn in to wonderfully adapted animals with a little bit of love from their owners.

With socializing it is very important to begin as soon as possible. Expose your puppy to as many other dogs as possible and you'll have a perfectly socially adapted dog.

Have you taken a good look at your dog lately? Is he/she overweight? I know it's hard not giving them treats, leftovers, and too much food. But just like us, being overweight is dangerous for any dog, especially the bigger and the very small breeds.

And if they don't get a good amount of exercise, too much weight can put a lot of pressure on their hearts. A good brisk walk a couple times a day is good for you and you're dog. Couch potato dogs are never a good thing health wise. We all need a little calorie burning exercise everyday to keep that weight down.

You can still give your dog treats and food. You just need to make sure it's got good healthy nutritional content rather than fat and sugar. Most of the commercial dog treats sold have little nutrition and mostly sugar and byproducts. Not a good thing for your favorite pet.

Don't believe me? Take a look at the label next time you go to buy some dog treats. If the contents have corn syrup, artificial colors (dye), and multiple preservative chemicals then all you have is junk food. This applies to your regular dog food too. Dogs don't need byproducts filler, corn syrup, artificial coloring, and a bunch of chemicals to make it stay fresh

A lot of dogs have medical problems due to over eating and too much good tasting but low nutrition food. Dogs don't know any better, I'm fairly certain my dog would eat rocks if I put a little corn syrup and artificial flavoring on them. It's up to us to try and provide a nutritious diet to our dogs. And limit the amount of food they consume everyday.

There are some high end (read expensive) healthy commercial dog treats available. Check the price per ounce and I'll bet you'll be surprised at the high cost. You could probably buy your dog some of the best cuts of meat for the price you pay for those special treats.

So what's a good solution? Well, you can pay those high prices for the commercial healthy dog treats, that's one way. Or you can make your own dog treats with some simple ingredients that provide the right amount of nutrition and taste good too. Here's a real easy and quick recipe:

Healthy Dog Biscuits

* 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour

* 1/2 cup powdered milk 1

* teaspoon salt

* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

* 1 egg

* 6 tablespoons vegetable oil

* 8 tablespoons water --(8 to 10)

* 2 jars of Baby food, Meat, Beef, Strained -- *Note: Strain. Use beef, chicken or lamb

Mix all ingredients together and knead for 3 min. Roll out to `/1 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and place biscuits on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min., makes approximately 2 dozen dog biscuits.

You can also be very selective in what you give your dog as leftovers. High protein and low in fat leftovers are fine. A dog does need some fat, just like we do for a well balanced diet. A steak or roast bone is good, just don't smother it in gravy and include the cut off fat you didn't want to eat. Vegetables are good too, they provide the vitamins and minerals necessary for good nutrition. Avoid giving your dog gravy, butter, trimmed fat of any kind, cookies and dessert items, and fried foods in general.

Limit their amount of dog food each day to the recommended amounts by weight of your dog. Don't leave food out for constant munching. Give them enough food to provide good nutrition each day but don't let them eat all day long or whenever they want.

Your dog will be healthier, have fewer medical problems, and live longer with a good nutritious diet. Clean and fresh water and daily exercise will keep them in good shape too. And there's a good chance you'll save money on vet bills too.

Panic attack in dogs comes on suddenly and can be triggered by booming noises such as the sharp sound of gun shots, fireworks or even rumbling thunder. The fight or flight instinct kicks in big-time, but since fighting an invisible entity is not possible, some dogs will panic and blindly run for survival. For dogs who are protected within a fenced yard or confined inside a building, there is nowhere for them to go. So they turn all of that "flight" energy into outward detrimental behavior or they internalize it, causing severe shaking, whining, panting, and raised heart rate.

No one really understands why some dogs experience these panic attacks and others show no signs of anxiety during the same circumstances. In a home of two or more dogs, one may sleep right through a powerful thunderstorm, while another dog has a panic attack and seems to be totally lost within its fear.

If you have adopted a rescued dog, its previous history may be unattainable. It could have included some type of incident that caused a deathly fear of certain situations or abrasive sounds. If only they could tell us. On second thought, I'm not sure I would want to know. Anyway, you may never know the reason behind the panic, but it's really not as important as helping your dog learn to relax rather than react.

I honestly believe that a panic attack in dogs is much the same as it is in people. I don't believe we really understand why a number of people suffer from panic attacks and yet others don't. Fortunately for us, humans are able to seek out guidance to help us conquer our anxieties.

Dogs don't have any methods or dealing with an anxiety or panic attack. They have no means of working through it or of understanding how to overcome this panic they are experiencing.

That is where we, as their caretakers, must intervene and find methods to help overcome this panic attack in dogs.

To begin with, I have to emphasize the necessity of not chastising your dog for running away or destroying something during a panic attack. Your dog is reacting to something he doesn't understand. By punishing him you will be adding to the already high level of anxiety your dog is experiencing, possibly escalating any further episodes.

I do believe that a dog who has undergone some obedience dog training will have an advantage over an untrained dog in that your trained dog may be able to be distracted from its fear somewhat by obedience commands. This is not always the case with extreme anxiety, because it does seem to dominate any previous training, but with mild cases of panic attack, distraction with obedience work may help.

Sedatives are one option for calming a panic attack in dogs. This is not a method I would recommend because it doesn't solve the problem. It will only temporarily mask the situation. Your dog will be listless and debilitated for a few hours and each dog may react a little differently to each sedative.

Some sedatives will slow down your dog's reactions yet not calm the panic within. He will still experience the distress caused by the noise or other stimulant without being able to do anything about it. If you have tried other options that have failed and decide to use a sedative, please do some research on the side effects of the specific sedative you will be using.

The ultimate goal is to help your dog defeat its terror and get through a nerve wracking event without the anxiety that has plagued him in the past.

Another tool for helping overcome a panic attack in dogs is the anxiety wrap. You can find this as the Original Anxiety Wrap and the Thundershirt. The anxiety wrap is a snugly fitting shirt that exerts deep touch pressure on pressure points to soothe a dog during stress. It is similar to the swaddling of an infant to help it feel secure. This does not work for every dog or every stressful situation, but it may help many dogs. Some are helped immediately, others might take several times of using the anxiety wrap to slowly lessen the extreme panic they have experienced so many times.

One other option for helping your dog to get over its extreme fear is by gradually exposing it to the very thing that terrifies it, such as rolling thunder. You would begin with a tape recording of thunder. Play it at a very low level, offering your dog treats, to play ball, to dance around and have fun. Your dog will learn to associate fun things with the noise it has previously deemed terrifying. Increase the stimulation gradually, but not until your dog has accepted each level with no signs of anxiety.

There are a number of options to work through a panic attack in dogs. There really is no reason to simply watch your dog deal with the terror it feels. It may take some research, seeking advice from trainers and an abundance of patience, but it will be worth it on that day when you are in the middle of a thunderstorm and your dog is lying peacefully on its bed.

Karleen Lindsey has worked with dogs for many years. In her work fostering rescue dogs and in her grooming career, she has observed many behavior issues. She works extensively to help each dog break through the barriers of fear and anti-social behavior, with patience being the primary key to success.
Obesity is the number 1 health threat to dogs today. 53% of dogs are overweight. When your dog is overweight, it puts a strain on their hearts and lungs.

The main causes of weight gain in dogs are the same as in humans; too much food and not enough exercise. Long hours sitting at work or in front of the TV aren't just bad to your own fitness, it is bad for your dog's as well. It means that your dog gets fewer and shorter walks and less active playtime. Too many dog parents think the way to show love is to feed their dog. Dogs are like children. Your time and your attention mean a heck of a lot more to them than food, money and material things.

How can you tell if your dog is overweight?

* Gently press your dog's chest with your hands and feel for their ribs. You should be able to detect them without exerting too much pressure.
* while your dog is standing, look down on them from above. You should be able to see a distinct waistline below their rib cage.

If you feel that your dog is overweight, here is how you can cut back their diet:

* Take stock of their daily food intake including treats. Cut down on that amount by 25%
* Choose foods that are high in protein and low in fat. 25 to 30% of protein is best.
* Rewarding your dog's good behavior with one or two treats a day is fine, but consider leaner options such as produce (like chicken or sweet potato) that is sold in pet stores.

The best way to help your overweight dog lose some weight though is to take some and exercise with them and have playtime. This benefits both you and your dog.

Some dogs may not be able to process some foods, and suffer from food allergies when fed certain items. True food allergies in dogs only occur in dogs over roughly one year of age. Some breeds of dog have higher risk of food allergies. These include the following:

* Cocker Spaniels
* Dalmations
* Golden Retrievers
* Labrador Retrievers
* Miniature Schnauzer
* West Highland White Terrier

Surprisingly, food allergies in dogs may cause no gastrointestinal problems at all but trigger an allergic response in the skin, sometimes localized to the face or the ears. The most common antigens that cause food allergies in dogs are proteins. Beef is the most common protein in dog food, it accounts for about 60% of diagnosed cases.

Food allergies in dogs is diagnosed by feeding a unique diet that the dog has not eaten for at least six weeks. Dogs seldom eat fish or potato so that is the diet that is usually recommended to see if anything in the former diet is provoking an allergic response. If skin disease or bowel problems resolve but return when the former food is fed again, this confirms food allergy in your dog. It would probably be best to stick to the fish and potato new diet routine if this happens. The processing procedures used to produce commercial dog food may somehow increase the antigenicity of some foods, so processed food may trigger food allergies in dogs whereas natural foods do not. Some dog food manufacturers produce hypoallergenic foods, in which the protein has been "hydrolized" or broken down into its constituent amino acids

Commercial dog foods are not healthy for your dog.

Dog Coughing - Simply What Does It Really Mean?

Dog coughing is a common thing amongst dogs of various types and ages. Both people and dogs cough as a reflex action to clear the throat of obstructions before they go down into the lungs. Coughing may just be the dog's way of disposing of a thing he's just ingested. Other causes regarding your dog's cough could be disorders for instance kennel cough, bronchitis, heart worm, or perhaps allergen hypersensitivity to something in his natural environment.

Almost all instances of dog coughing will cure themselves in a few days. However if the cough gets worse or keeps going for over a week, it might be recommended that you get the vet to examine your dog. Make sure you make an effort to convey to the vet exactly what the cough sounds like. Have a recording if possible. Your vet will then have enough knowledge to target the specific explanation for the cough so much more quickly. It is because different sounding coughs can indicate a certain condition. For instance a dry sounding cough most often ends up being a virus such as kennel cough. This could be easily transmitted among other dogs so it's good to get it checked out as soon as possible. A loose sounding cough may well suggest that there is an inflammation within the dog's throat or bronchi. If you're concerned that the cough may be a symptom of something serious, get hold of your vet at once.

Should your dog start to cough, enable him to rest so you can keep him quiet. If your dog runs around, this could cause him to cough even more. Make sure the dog has a clean, moisture-free and properly aired spot in which to recover. In addition to relaxation, your dog may require a diet of softer food for a time as his throat might be a bit raw. Tinned foods might be the most suitable option.

Dry coughs in most dogs can be eased by providing your dog using a moist atmosphere.. Just take your dog into the bathroom along with you as you take a shower. Because your dog breathes in the steam coming from the warm water, the cough will improve. This is merely helpful with regard to dry coughs, though.

You'll soon see that many coughs go away by themselves. Whenever a cough won't go away or maybe tends to intensify, it's the right time for the vet to provide some medical help. Examples of the remedies for dogs with lingering coughs might be medicines, cough elixirs, as well as antibiotics. These therapies and others could be given to your dog dependent upon the cause of the dog coughing. Even though you believe you know the explanation for your dog coughing, don't hope to take care of him on your own and never begin using human cough suppressants on your pet. Your dog may well be coughing for a good reason, for example to remove a throat blockage, so stopping the coughing would be a mistake. When it comes to medication, leave that side of things to a skilled vet.

Dog coughing may be worrying if you're not familiar with it. If you aren't sure the reason your dog is coughing, for those who have a dog who has an excessive or weird sounding cough, or perhaps the coughing carries on for more than a week or maybe getting rather more serious, a good thing you can do is to take them to the vet for the proper treatment.

Dogs are susceptible to a wide range of disorders and considering that they are unable to speak, it's hard at times to know what to do. Coughing in dogs can be innocuous, or it could be an indicator of a more serious ailment.

It isn't enjoyable for a doggy any time he's got a cough, or for you personally. Aside from the apparent worry about their well being, their coughing can certainly keep you up during the night. In the event that their cough brings about retching and throwing up, you could have much more housekeeping duties to do!

Despite the fact that there are usually countless reason behind why your dog might cough, why don't we take a look at the most typical causes.

Parasitic organisms

Heartworms are usually dispersed through mosquitos and reside within the right section of your doggie's heart as well as within the blood vessels leading out of the heart to the lung. They aggravate those blood vessels and also additionally conflict with blood circulation, eventually leading to cardiovascular failure.

You can easily provide your pet preventive medicine to be able to prevent him from getting heartworm disease. These types of medicines do not really avoid an infection with heartworm, however they will eliminate the baby worms just before they begin to develop into adults and thus can easily start to cause your dog any specific damage.

Bacterial infections

In the event that your dog frequently visits a dog kennel or daycare, they might possibly be in danger of contracting kennel cough. This is actually a simple name for a extremely transmittable upper respiratory system infection that brings about inflammation involving a dog's pharynx and also windpipe. The actual infection is usually usually brought on by a virus known as Parainfluenza, assisted and abetted by means of bacteria recognized as Bordetella.

Those pair of offenders tend to be liable for the majority of instances of kennel cough in canines. Even though you could vaccinate your pet against kennel cough, it is not really one hundred percent defensive plus your dog might also contract an infection. Luckily, for the majority of dogs kennel cough is not a serious condition and therefore they will get better pretty fast.

Heart Disease

We have previously discussed on heart failure while we were talking on the subject of heartworm. Any time your doggie's heart is not functioning properly, it is not as efficient in pumping blood via his system. That indicates that their blood pressure rises and then there may end up being seapage of fluid within their lungs. The consequence is usually a cough that appears to be more serious during the nighttime.

Certainly, there are usually numerous origins of heart failure in canines, which includes a weakness associated with the specific heart muscle as well as damage involving the small valves inside of the heart. Treatment method will depend on the underlying cause, therefore bring your dog around to your current veterinarian in order to find out what is taking place with your doggy. A prognosis of cardiovascular disease can certainly be frightening however together with modern-day medicine, it is in all likelihood that your dog can possess a very good high quality of living for quite a few years to come.

Bronchitis

In the event that your pet is older, they might begin to cough a good deal more. That occurs mainly because their breathing passages can be significantly less flexible. Thus the small tiny hairs, known as cilia, which line their airways grow to be not quite so efficient.

The cilia's duty is simply to help progress mucus upward and out of the respiratory system, and in the event that they do not perform this properly, generally there may end up being more mucus in your pups bronchi. That mucus can cause your dog to cough even more. Your animal medical practitioner may recommend medicine that can serve to relieve your older dog's cough.

Treatment methods associated with coughing in dogs may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories as well as humidifiers. However prior to attempting anything at all at home, make an consultation with your veterinarian. When you understand the reason why your dog is usually coughing, you will wind up being in a position to begin the proper therapy for their condition, plus he will quickly start to feel a more like his old self.

Our dogs are like family to us and so naturally it's very upsetting when they become sick. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you knew how to give your dog a check-up, so you could spot a problem early? Before it became truly serious or even life threatening?

Now you can learn how to give your dog a check-up just like your veterinarian does and keep your dog healthy.

In all the best dog breeds and in old dogs there are several causes. However the particular type of senility in most older dogs is a slowly developing one, which is caused by general wear and tear. Parts affected are the brain cells, damaged by free radicals brought about by excessive toxins. Feeding extra anti-oxidants in the diet can sometimes help reduce the damage caused.

Sometimes an aging dogs behavior is confused with the dog being classed as becoming senile. Here are a number of points to take note of when assessing if your dog may be suffering from the dog form of senile dementia.

Is there any aimless behavior or what you would class as not being normal for your dog?

 Does your dog star-gaze?

Does it do any circular walking movements?

Does it still have contact with you or your family?

 Does it collide with furniture?

Does it appear to be dis-orientated?

Does it recognize everyone around it?

Is it aggressive towards you or anyone who it knows well?

Does it try to do things it normally would not do before?

Has your dog suddenly began to urinate in the house?

Has your dog become aggressive to other pets or dogs?

Does your dog squeeze through too narrow a space?

Other causes that can affect a dog developing the disease:

Neutering a dog can affect the risk of any breed of dog developing senile dementia. In a study in Spain evidence showed that dogs that were neutered or spayed developed senile dementia earlier on in their lives.

Liver disease: affects the dogs metabolism, like the expulsion of waste products from proteins. This process can cause the ammonia levels to rise and eventually they reach the brain. These act as neurotransmitters and cause the brain to malfunction leading to senility.

Infections: Certain infections, which damage the brain, can cause loss of normal behavioral functions in a dog.

Toxins: Many foods or products classed as toxins which cause liver damage, can also bring about direct or secondary brain damage.

Tumors: Brain and tumors of the spinal cord often cause the first signs of dementia in all dog breeds progressing to more devastating neurological functions.

For all dog breeds and whatever you do, always consult your veterinary surgeon and they will be able to do tests to see if your dog has a type of dog senility. There is a treatment for senility in Dogs and the symptoms caused by our aging pets brains can be reduced. There is something that can be done to help alleviate the effects of senility and give your dog a reason to live and make you feel more comfortable with the unfortunate symptoms of your dogs aging.

Hi, I'm Ian Nicholson, I live in the UK and I am married with three grown up children.
I left school at eighteen after studying engineering and science then entered the RAF, eventually leaving to help my Father in his agricultural business.
I've been self employed for most all my adult life and have run many businesses ranging from Farming, Haulage, Agricultural, and Building.
I love reading and learning about everything under the sun and now I write information products besides studying dog diseases and nutrition.
I love everything about writing and of course dogs which I have kept and been involved with for over fifty years.
It is sad to see our beloved dogs and cats grow old. While physical changes in aging pets may be obvious, mental changes may be misunderstood. This article will help you understand your older dog or cat.

Some dogs as they reach old age may exhibit a number of behavioral changes linked to senility. This condition is now commonly called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. While this syndrome is recognized in dogs, it has not been scientifically established in cats.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction shows signs in four distinct ways. They are disorientation, interaction with people, activity level and sleep, and house-training. Any combination of symptoms may be apparent.

Disorientation can be seen as an animal that wanders aimlessly, gets stuck in corners, stands at the wrong side of a door or appears not to recognize people or familiar commands and words. Changes in interaction with people include seeking more or less attention than normal, not wanting to be petted, and not responding to his or her name. Activity level and sleep changes show in such behaviors as sleeping more during the day and less at night, barking for no reason, forgetting meal times, and wandering aimlessly.

House training changes are obvious - things as urinating in the house, not asking to go outside or forgetting why they are there when they do go out. This is not the same as incontinence, which is usually a physical problem.

Cats may show some of these same signs, though they are often more subtle. There are also a number of other reasons for behavior changes in both dogs and cats. No syndrome has yet been recognized in cats.

Chronic pain can cause be another cause of changes in behavior, in particular activities such as pacing or not sleeping at night. Cats may show a marked decrease in activity. Hyperthyroidism and other hormonal disorders in cats can also cause changes, especially those involving eating patterns or aggression. Medications can cause changes in behavior as well, as can many other diseases and medical conditions. Cats are also prone to small strokes, which can cause changes such as walking into walls, or appearing disorientated. A thorough medical exam with blood work will be necessary in order to determine if your pet has a cognitive disorder due to aging.

There is also a syndrome called societal dissociative disorder, which is similar to CDS and is caused by loss of senses such as hearing and sight. Loss of one sense can often be compensated for by using another. Animals will do this instinctively, but we can also use this knowledge in our interaction with them. For example, when training your dogs they can be taught hand signals as well as verbal commands. As long as they are reinforced throughout the dogs life, the hand signals will be in place should an older dog lose its hearing.

For a dog or cat that has lost some or all of its sight, you can help him cope by not moving furniture or making any major changes in his environment. If the animal has lost both hearing and sight, you may still be able to communicate with it by using vibrations, such as stomping on the floor near the pet.

You can also help your pet through these times by being aware of the causes of its behavior, and by not taking it personally or punishing the animal for inappropriate acts. You can offer extra attention and reassurance. Try to keep a consistent schedule, and to not make a lot of physical changes in the dog or cat's environment.

Medications are available to deal with some symptoms, but there are natural options you can use. The use of flower essences, aromatherapy, herbs and touch therapy can all be helpful in keeping your dog or cat free of anxiety.

Elyse is the founder of The Original Dog Biscuit Company.
Tips for Living with a Blind Dog
Author: Samantha Markham

There are many health conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma and cancer, that can lead to blindness in dogs. Sometimes the loss of sight will be gradual and, in these instances, you have time to adjust to your dog's disability, prepare your home and translate any visual commands into verbal ones. However, blindness can occur suddenly, which may be more difficult to cope with.

How Dogs Adapt to Blindness

For a dog, blindness is usually adapted to quite quickly. Unlike us, dogs do not depend predominantly on sight, their wonderful senses of smell and hearing allow them to compensate for loss of sight. In fact, many owners are surprised by how quickly their dogs adjust to sudden blindness.

That said, there are a number of things that owners should bear in mind when living with a blind dog. Whether your dog has lost his, or her, sight or you are considering adopting a blind dog, you can make the life of that pet easier and safer with the following tips.

Tips for Living with a Blind Dog

When it comes to the home, there are safety issues that should be borne in mind. Some owners find that it is helpful to toddler-proof their homes for blind pets. In other words, any items that can cause injury or danger (such as knives and electrical cables) should be kept out of the dog's reach. In addition, swimming pools and other hazardous areas should be kept fenced off to avoid accidents.

As well as safety, you should consider your dog's comfort and ease of mobility. He, or she, will not appreciate sudden moves of furniture for example. It is always advisable to keep your dog's food and water bowls in the same place and it can be helpful to have a rigid daily routine, as this will help the dog feel secure.

If your dog has suddenly developed blindness, it can be tempting to help your canine companion by bringing food to him, or her, etc. However, you should try to avoid coddling your dog, because he, or she, will not want to become dependant upon your assistance and will not be able to adapt to a life without sight as quickly as he, or she, otherwise would.

However, if you are concerned that your dog is not adjusting well to the disability there is always the option of a guide dog. Just like guide dogs for humans, a guide dog for dogs is able to lead his, or her, companion.

How to Care for a Blind Dog Outside the House

Just because your dog is no longer able to see, does not mean that he, or she, will not enjoy the great outdoors. New smells and sounds will enrich your pet's life, so it is important to maintain outdoor activity. However, it is crucial to keep your dog on a leash, as sudden sounds or smells may frighten your dog and cause it to run.

Even when in your own yard or garden, it is wise to keep a close eye on your dog to ensure that he, or she, is safe. Additionally, as with inside the home, it is wise to keep all garden furniture and kids' toys in an orderly fashion.

In cases of dog blindness, our pets are often very resilient and adaptable. However, by keeping the above tips in mind, you will make the adjustment period much easier for your dog.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/tips-for-living-with-a-blind-dog-4184213.html
About the Author

Taking care of a blind dog may require making some changes, but is not as difficult as you may think.

Before taking on the care of a blind dog or even if your dog is gradually losing its sight, decide where you want to place your furniture. At first your dog may bump into things, but eventually it will learn the setup and walk about your house as if sighted. However, be aware if you make changes your blind dog needs time to adjust.

Try not to leave things like toys lying on the floor that will injure your dog or disrupt its pathway.

Staircases should have a barrier to prevent accidents.

If you have to go out and leave your dog alone for any length of time, it might be a good idea to put your dog in its kennel. This will give your dog a sense of security when you are not home. You'll worry less too.

Your garden/yard must be fenced and should be kept free of obstacles as well. Any outdoor furniture should remain in place. Garden tools should be put away where your dog won't stumble on them and injure itself.

Pools are especially dangerous places for blind dogs. Pools should be fenced in and the gate locked unless you are there to supervise. This holds true for sighted dogs too. Dogs know how to swim, but blind dogs have difficulty with direction and can panic and easily drown before finding an escape route.

Your blind dog (or any pet) should not be left outdoors without supervision for long periods of time.

You can train your blind dog using your voice and using touch methods.

Caring for a blind dog is really not difficult, especially when you add tons of love given and received.

Just a note: My mother has a 16 year old blind dog that gets around my house and fenced in garden with no problems. Visitors aren't even aware that she is blind.

Caring for a blind cat has similar challenges.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/how-to-care-for-a-blind-dog-1860861.html
About the Author

Living With Dogs That Are Hearing Impaired
Author: Kelly Marshall

We've all heard the stories about how keen our pets' hearing is. After all, they can hear a car in the driveway long before we usually do, pick up thunderstorms and other weather, and rush to the kitchen at the rustle of the food bag. However, just like us, not every dog has the best hearing. Some are born with impairments, while others become partially or fully deaf over the course of many years. All dogs with hearing loss, however, need special care.

If your dog has reduced hearing, it's important to catch it early. If your dog becomes less responsive to your voice, this might not be because he or she is becoming disobedient, but because you simply can't be heard! If you think this is going on with your pet, you need to ask your vet to test your dog's hearing. The earlier you find out what's going on, the more easily your pet's hearing loss can be accommodated and dealt with.

Many dogs will eventually lose their hearing completely, but that doesn't mean that you can't do anything to make their lives easier. Start using hand signals along with voice commands while your dog can still hear you. Use plenty of praise when these signals are obeyed. Eventually you can go to just the hand signal. Realize that your dog may be confused when this first happens, but with the right reinforcement, he or she will catch on quickly. Choose clear and obvious hand signals that your dog can see from a long distance.

Praise your dog as soon as he or she starts doing the desired response to your hand signal. You'll need to think about how you're administering praise, since verbal methods are the most common. You may need to change to physical forms of praise, or your dog may not know he or she is doing a good job! Remember to focus on just a few commands at one time, since too many can be confusing. Not even the smartest dog can learn a lifetime of new tricks right away.

These pieces of advice are best for gradual hearing loss. Sometimes, however, dogs will lose their hearing very quickly. That can make retraining very difficult. If a little residual hearing remains, pair a loud, clear voice signal with the right physical signal, but don't shout. Smell signals can be used, as well - particularly in dogs that are completely deaf. Use food to get your pet's interest, and then work in a short session - ten minutes or so - twice a day or more. Don't push things, and remember that hearing loss is often related to other health conditions. The goal is an enjoyable session for both of you. Frustration won't help either of you learn to communicate!

Remember that there are safety concerns with dogs that cannot hear, as well. Hearing impaired animals must never be allowed out without you, and should be on a leash at all times. They can't hear other animals, approaching cars, or other signs of danger, and if they aren't looking at you, they can't see you signaling. It's hard to get the attention of a dog that cannot hear you, so keep your hearing impaired dog on a leash at all times.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/living-with-dogs-that-are-hearing-impaired-1059881.html
About the Author

How to enjoy living with a dog who has lost his hearing
Author: Ivan Ojounru

Owning a dog that can not hear can be both a rewarding and educating experience. Owning a dog that has good hearing and sight can often lead us into being a little lazy, when it comes to establishing effective patterns of communication between us and our pet. For the most part we struggle through with a few voice commands and maybe the occasional hand signal, that often change depending on the situation. Fortunately, in a lot of situations our dogs learn to navigate their way around our impromptu communication style and, begin to 'catch on' to what it is we want from them.

Owning a deaf dog however is a different story; many owners of deaf dogs testify to how much their lives have changed since their deaf dog come to live with them. Often, deaf dog owners talk in terms of how different and, in many cases how much better their relationship is in terms of both communication and depth
Variation sentence 4.

Dogs experience deafness due to a number of reasons; many dogs are born deaf. This type of deafness is referred to as Congenital Deafness, it's cause is due to a defective gene. Other causes of deafness in dogs are usually the result of accidents, illness or old age.

If you are thinking of sharing your life with a deaf dog, then understanding, patience and, a willingness to adapt will put you in good stead. Amongst the most important things to consider are keeping your new pet safe, developing an appropriate means of communication, and making your home a comfortable and, secure place for your dog to live.

Dogs that are deaf are prone to being touch sensitive and, can also become startled much easier that dog who have no problems with their hearing, for example, if somebody approaches them from behind and touches them, or if roused from sleep. When owning a deaf dog you will need to keep this in mind and, adapt the ways in which you approach and, handle your dog. This is especially important for those with young children, as children can be boisterous at times and, a child running up and touching a dog that can not see him or her coming could cause the dog to become nervous or even try to bite.

To help your deaf dog adjust, try approaching him head on, stamping your feet as you approach your dog from behind can also be very helpful, as the vibrations will alert him. If you have children teach them to approach your dog calmly and to touch him gently.

If your deaf dog is over sensitive to your touch, try to help him by giving him a tasty food treat each time you pet him. With practice, your dog will begin to associate your 'unexpected' touch with a feeling of pleasure.

Two more important things to consider when making your home a safe and pleasurable place for your dog are, not to leave doors or gates open, so as your dog can escape and be left unattended, as this could be disastrous. If your new dog is going to be left alone for some time during the day, you may consider it wise to train him to spend time in a dog crate. However, do keep in mind due to your dog not being able to hear he may become restless, or even frightened at being left alone in his crate. Deaf dogs can also be particularly prone to separation anxiety, so do make sure your dog has plenty to occupy himself with during the time he spends alone.

The biggest dangers posed to your deaf dog will be when you are out and about, especially if you live in a town or city, where there is a lot of traffic. Keep your dog on his leash, at least until you are in a place where it is safe to manage him off leash. However, it is important to do this only when your dog is performing a consistent recall.

Working on building a way of communication that both you and your dog are familiar with is vitally important to sharing your life with a deaf dog. As your dog will not be able to hear you, only hand signals will do. In fact dogs are well ahead of us in terms of being able to read body language. You can use a series of 'official' hand signals taken from sign language designed for humans, for example, British or American sign language, or use signs from these languages that have been adapted especially for using with dogs, or alternatively you can design your own signs. smiling and speaking your commands, although the dog will not hear you, will also help to reinforce your new hand signals, however, the key is keep your hand signals consistent and simple, so as not to cause your dog to become confused.

When it comes down to it owning a deaf dog is not dissimilar to owning a dog that can hear. All is needed is a little extra patience, understanding, love and, a little work on your part and, you will come to develop a relationship with your dog that is difficult to compare.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/how-to-enjoy-living-with-a-dog-who-has-lost-his-hearing-951230.html
About the Author

Choosing The Right Pet Stairs For Your Pet
Author: Robert Fogarty

It's important to choose the right pet stairs. Many people see the prices and forget about having a pet stair. These people may not know how important it is to have a good quality stairs as I have seen many people preferring low quality stairs only to save few dollars. No doubt we should buy something which is worthy but it is important that you consider other factors as well besides price when you are going to buy dog stairs or anything. Smart people may know from where they can get good quality pet stairs which are reasonably priced and of good quality as well. If you do your homework before going to school then you are rewarded similarly if you plan and do some research before buying stairs, you can save some money.

If you are interested in buying good quality pet stairs then I would give you some important tips to buy the right stairs!

> Well known and experienced storekeepers will help you a lot when you are buying dog stairs as they would be familiar with different kinds of problems faced by pets and pet owners. An experienced and expert person would recommend you to buy carpeted stairs whereas an inexperienced storekeeper might propose you something of inferior quality so that you can save some money. However, it is important while buying dog stairs to evaluate both quality and cost of the product.

> A good storekeeper would suggest you to get the pet stairs according to the size of your pet. Also he would suggest you the right dog stairs in terms of foam, quality etc.

> If your pet is big and active then a high density pet stairs will be better for you. These are designed perfectly with the sole aim to prevent your pet from any injury.

> High density chairs are light weighted. They reduce the chances of injuries; they are portable and easily carried. They vary in sizes and it is up to you to select the type of stairs you want for your pet.

> Height of the stairs is another important factor that should be considered by the buyer. If the size of the pet is not considered while buying stairs then it might be risky for your pet as your pet can fall down from the stairs and get injured.

As discussed earlier, Carpeted stairs would reduce the chances of your pet to get injured. Also when you are buying pet stairs you should make sure that the cover of these stairs are washable as washing these covers on a regular basis would avoid any kind of disease which would be harmful for your pet.

If you love your pet then I am sure you will take care of all the important accessories needed by your pet. One last suggestion that I would like to give it to you before you buy a pet stair is that you should conduct research and find the best quality pet stairs available in the market.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/choosing-the-right-pet-stairs-for-your-pet-4381965.html
About the Author
