For over 14 years your friendship has guided me through…from being a homeless stray in an Almora garage to being the spoilt brat of ours! You saw me from my half pant days to well, half pant days again.

I know you wouldn’t have wished us to remember you with misty eyes hence here’s raising a toast to the miracle that you were(are).

I stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
“It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.”
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today; your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I’m not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you; I smiled and said, “it’s me.”
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It’s possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.”
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew…
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over… I smile and watch you yawning
and say “good-night, God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.”
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out…then come home to be with me.

There are some moments surreal as a dream.
Calm as a cat.
You twitch a brow and the balance is perturbed.
A desire to see a different world in place of the real.

And then there are some who show their pets the exit door with a new arrival in the family.
Irony couldn’t have been starker.

Out of an average life span of a decade, someone gives you unadulterated love for every passing second and you got the nerves to call it quits?

I hope you lament the loss someday. I hope this awkward predicament grows on you, like the lump in the throat. Like a blow you feel deep in the diaphragm, like a loss that chokes. Life, interrupted.

If you know someone who has shown the door to an old dog or abandoned a pup after bringing him home be wary— you know a person for whom love or loyalty isn’t a virtue.

I Adopted Your Dog Today

I adopted your dog today
the one you left at the pound
the one you had for seven years
and no longer wanted around.

I adopted your dog today
Do you know he’s lost weight?
Do you know he’s scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?

I adopted your dog today.
He had fleas and a cold,
but don’t worry none.
You’ve unburdened your load.

I adopted your dog today.
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies or was there no reason he couldn’t stay?

I adopted your dog today.
he doesn’t play or eat much
He’s very depressed, but
he will learn again to trust.

I adopted your dog today.
And here he will stay.
He’s found his forever home
and a warm bed on which to lay.

I adopted your dog today.
And I will give him all that he could need.
Patience, love, security, and understanding.
Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.

Through the decade, amidst thick and thin, algebra tests and heart breaks, free flocking in Soar valley to the randomness of summer reverie…epoch of my innocence and the minute of my madness; you were there. Often silent but forever present.

As you turn a new leaf today, marking the 14th year of our growing up together, I hope time takes a brief stall. I yearn to return to the cold floor underneath the bed, your secret hiding place, the Underworld…where you hid your treasures…rubber lizards, calcium bones, ferns and at times, mangoes. I hope I never grow too old to visit your place.

From the kid who never grew to the dog who refused the tides of time.

I’ve named the poem “The Indian Street Dog”, as I drew inspiration for it by seeing a loving street dog in Varanasi. With this poem I wish for people to reflect over the greatness in stray animals everywhere. Detested by so many, yet these dogs nourish the hope for love and affection. I’ve met so many of them, and felt the longing of their souls. My Dagi, who lived as a street dog in Portugal for many years, means everything to me. I don’t even remember how days without her were! If only people would open their hearts to the street dogs, then everyone would find themselves forever touched by these misunderstood angels….

The Indian Street Dog

This road is not mine to take,
But to follow,
As destiny paves my way.

These streets know my name,
As I know theirs.
They have carried me near and afar;
Waved me goodbye when hope has called me,
And welcomed me upon returning with my shattered dreams.

One day, I will take to the skies,
Like the birds I watch from the stairs at the temple.
I will embrace the Forgotten ones,
Breathe life into the hearts of all human beings,
And make every road lead to Home.
