Here's another great video to watch for body language and facial expressions. I first saw this on Fox News the other day. I didn't know what was going on because I had the TV muted. I was talking to my gf and I said to her " uh oh, some big dog is fixing to bite this chick on TV right now." Sure enough, SNAP, he bit her. But there were SO many warning signs.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9073642/Kyle-Dyer-veteran-Denver-TV-news-anchor-attacked-by-dog-live-on-air.html

This is what I see, and Star, correct me if I'm wrong.

A nervous, uncomfortable dog with someone right in it's face. The person in it's face is also holding it's chin while petting it on top of the head. In dog language the "paw" on top of the head is seen as dominance.

A dog being overly stimulated by being rubbed on it's ears, chin, cheeks, top of head and back.

A dog that is being challenged by direct eye contact from this stranger in it's face.

A dog that's nervous licking.

A dog that closes it's mouth and pulls it's lips forward. He was doing this when the cam first came on him. Huge red flag. I counted 5 times the dog did this, maybe six.

And finally she leans in, right into his face, that top lip rolls back in another split second warning, and snap, he bites.

The dog gave every warning it knew how to give. The ppl were just too stupid or oblivious to see it.

So this isn't really a serious question. Kinda just for fun.

Anyways, my newly single best friend is talking about getting a new dog once she settles into a new apartment and gets on her feet. Not really in the near future. She's definitely missing her 5 year old Husky baby who stayed with her ex.

She likes Nordic looking breeds. Has to be good in an apartment, and not too vocal. She's looking for a small/medium sized breed and a good cuddler. She was never really active before but starting to get more into it now, still probably not looking for something with a crazy high energy level.

My suggestion were American Eskimo Dog but I think they can be "talkers" lol. My other suggestion was a Dwarf Great Pyr LOL No snuggle like a fat Pyr snuggle. :p

I should add that she also likes shaggy-sheepdog-esque type dogs but she shot down my suggestion of Tibetan Terriers, which I think are just dolls... Just my biased opinion as I used to handle and groom them :p lol

My pups name is Oreo and he is a sweet sheltiedoodle that is now 12 weeks old. He was the runt of his litter and he was doing just fine for about 2 weeks that we've had him. He is now at the vets and being tested on but I wanted to know if anyone has ever experienced this with their pets, what was their diagnosis and what anyone would recommend...

He woke up in the middle of the night foaming at the mouth followed by convulsions then having a seizure for about a minute or so. We took him to the emergency vet and they monitored him through the night. They first checked his blood sugar level because he is a small 5 pound pup and it was normal. The vet said he seemed to be fine all night until they fed him in the morning. After he ate he began to have an episode of walking in circles, not responding (a neurological episode). His symptoms are eye discharge, some drooling, playful at times then very sleepy. He sometimes hides behind a couch to nap by himself. He seems to be very nervous and fearful of new things, sounds etc. His bowel movements have been fine, firm stool, no diarhea. Also no vomiting only salivating at times.

We are picking up the little guy tonight and getting results tomorrow for liver tests. As of now the Dr believes it might be a liver shunt. Any information would be helpful. We love our pup very much and its breaking our hearts to see him like this. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks:confused:

I was playing with Mabel. We'd played ball, then we were playing tug with a Wubba. Next thing you know she puked all over my hand with NO warning. (treats from an hour ago) This made me start gagging and I started to get up off the floor to run to the bathroom. I barely made it to the toilet before I puked.

Ya'll stop laughing, damnit. :p

She was fine afterwards and still wanted to play. Not worried about it really, but, that's just frikkin' NASTY. At least cats make that " guh-guh-guh-guh" sound to give you a warning.

Dogs give no notice at all. She puked with the wubba in her mouth. She even had the WTF look on her face too. LOL

I have an uncle that I think the world of. However he is really MEAN to his dog and he has a lot of archaic ideas about dog training. He has an Australian Shepard, female, and he has turned her into a neurotic mess. Breaks my heart. He also has hunting dogs that he's mean to. Star, you would hate him. Trust me.

I was at his house this weekend and tried my best to tell him of other methods to use with his dogs. I am very confrontational and outspoken. So is he. I saw the convo taking a quick turn for the worse and I backed off because there's enough bad crap going on in my family as it is. I didn't want to add more.

The dog, Patches, was in her kennel in another room barking because she could hear Mabel, and my cousin's lil doxie having fun playing. My uncle started hollering at her to shut up. She would be quiet for a few mins then start up again. He ended up going into the room and hitting her with a fly swatter. That's when I got very confrontational and told him it was BS and that he was abusing her. We went around for a bit and then, like I said, I backed off.

He also refuses to have her spayed. He says every female dog he's had spayed always has trouble with their joints when they get older.

I need to find some short and sweet info on the benefits of spaying your female and I need to find short and sweet info on POSITIVE training. Would be best if it were breed specific to AS. He's not going to read a book but he might watch DVD's.

His treatment of his dogs is making me turn against him.

I'll take any links and advice ya'll can give on how to handle this.

New breeds (aka hybrids/designer dogs)?

So I have a weird question. I've read about hybrid dogs, aka designer dogs. And I know that this is something that's mostly frowned upon in the dog...

So I have a weird question. I've read about hybrid dogs, aka designer dogs. And I know that this is something that's mostly frowned upon in the dog world from what I can gather. For example, someone takes a lab and a poodle and voila labradoodle. From what I understand this can be advantageous especially in the case of allergies? So if someone has allergies to the coat of a lab, they'll likely be okay with the poodle coat, so a labradoodle would be a good fit if they like a lot of the characteristics of the lab breed but can't handle the coat. So from what I understand this is mostly not considered reputable breeding? But here's my question. In reading up on different dog breeds, they all have a time in their lineage where someone was trying to make a dog for some specific purpose, so they took some of this breed, some of that, tried a little bit of this, etc...and that made the breed what it is today. So what I'm wondering is this. How is what is being done with hybrid dogs different from what was done to create many of the breeds to begin with? Is it possible for someone to breed hybrids and be a reputable breeder?

I'm very curious. I have no plans to get a hybrid/designer dog. It's just something I've been wondering about though and I'd love to hear your answers/ explanations!

I am thinking about takeing Davey to a training class but how can I tell if the class/trainer is a good one? I have watched the classes a few times at Petsmart and the trainer seems nice but there are lots of places around here that offer classes including one that even overs agility classes. I thought about sending him somewhere to do the board/training option but I don't think I could be without him for 4 weeks. LOL Besides I kind of like the idea of being the one to teach him. I have taught him sit, down, and how to walk on a leash but his recall is nonexsiting and he the sit/down only work at home because when he is in public he wants to met everybody. LOL

Ok the thread on here about the bad doberman breeder got me thinking. Several years ago we wanted to buy a cocker spaniel we had been waiting for several months for one to come into one of the shelters near by but never were able to find one. We did not want a show dog we just wanted a pet so we asked our vet and he recommended a lady that brought her cockers to his office he said she was very nice, took excellent care of hers, they were AKC reg, and she also had all of the health testing done on them and she only had a litter a year so we went to talk to here she answered all the questions that were listed in the other thread, she had a male and one female and them and all the pups were kept in the house, the pups came with a health quarentee, and were already pee pad trained you could really tell that she cared for the breed and her dogs. She insisted on keeping the pup until they were 10 weeks old which I thought was good and she also offered to take the pup back at any time if we could no longer keep him so we ended up getting a beautiful blonde one from her and we named him Rocky and he was an awesome member of our family until someone stole him one day, they had broken into the house and took him as well as two laptops, a digital camera, camcorder, some gold jewelry, and a big thing of change that we had on our dresser. The police never found any of the items and we searched and sent pics to all of the shelters but never did find Rocky. Anyways what I am wondering was did it make her a bad breeder just because she did not show her dogs? Should I have not bought Rocky from her?
