type='text'>A Dogs Life : Smiles Influencing Other People

People see snapping , snarling, teeth-baring dog stories all the time. Fear of these canine creatures then spreads throughout communities like wildfire. Very seldom is something mundane captured and simply shared. This is Sox who enjoying his swim.

Sox is swimming in quite a nice damn in our local town.

Every time he does this, which is every day, he comes out and he finds a reason to smile. Except not like his cause he comes near me and he shakes. And I of course get wet. Then I hear him laugh.

This time he has done it in the water. So with reason to smile and then to p[robably laugh as well ay our own silly actions to water flying around. there is another reason to smile today. Every single one of us has a reason to smile throughout our days at least once just before we head off to to bed.

Have you thought about stopping what you are doing Before we do other things - give gratitude and thanks for those reasons.

Because whatever they are, these reasons , they are yours. And that smile is free.

And we will then all make the world a better place to be in.

All sorts of things happen on our morning walks. There is an establish routine when we arrive home. Every so often this routine is broken. That is when I find out why dogs like mud, Simply they like

living a dogs life!

Okay, the walks in the morning clean out the cobwebs within my mind. A fresh start for the day on what is happening and where I am up to with the sorting out of blog posts to write. In Theory. That is until Sox goes for his morning dip!

However, this morning was different. After we arrived back home, instead of going through to get dried off, Sox decided to go through the back gate and roll around under the house.

Now a few hours later here he is. I was shooting a video as one of the SFM 90 video day challenge... and out he came, crunched the bones that were there for his yesterday's food. That day the dog thoroughly enjoyed being locked out of the house! Actually he spent all say under the house instead..... knowing I could not get there to clean up! LOLs.

Now I think 'we' have again come to an unwritten agreement. He can go roll under the house all he wants. All that needs t happen is that on arrival home he goes through the back gates and does what a dog needs to do.

Then, before he comes anywhere near the door, he will get a dry comb and brush to 'MY' hearts content. This includes going over the one place he really hates any human touching... his bushy tails. Should have been called 'Basil Brush'

Reading the original article this picture below cane from made me shudder. I could idenify with every section of this article.

Transitional figures, sleepless nights, ritualistic and repetitive behaviors and the list just went on.

Of our four children everyone was a Houdini. The oldest one walking without anyclothes on up the mediam strop of a busy highway in the middle of a 'next day was a holiday' rush hour traffic. [Okay she had bright pink little gumboots and a cap on while her dolls were clothed and strapped in the dolly pram!].

At that time we lived in a caravan park with over one thousand sites. There were large fences all around and a boom gate just outside the only office 'entry' window. Right past the campsites main office and the mechanics

The relief I felt that with Paws for Ability a worldwide organisation these heart stopping moments of a missing child.
After many people out looking and 30 plus minutes later a stranger told us of the funny site he had seen. Not so funny for us either.

This incident happened in late 1985 [pre-mobilephone time]. Today I now give thanks to Paws for Ability and for mobile phones.

That was one child out of four. Each has many different heart stopping moments for parents stories.

So read the Paws for Ability post because it is about how these tracking dogs are great pets as well.

In my own life the dog and I go for walks. Now that may seem strange to you but when I click int0 something I simply forget to get out of it. The Dog knows this. When I am too intense and the world has moved past the dog reminds me to emerge and walk. Good for me good for him. A definite win / win situation. Could also be that while the blood in cruising through my veins he also gets feed, watered, rubbed own, combed [even if I insist on combing the tail - much to his dislike!]

The dog really want to go out. In fact it keeps reminding you that if those needs are not met there will be consequences!

Part of these consequences are the extra cm or inches around your waist line. So what happens next- you ask another dog owner to accompany you on the night walks.

Enter DD a seven year old Kelpie. Now DD apparently has her master under control. She agrees with every thing he says.... or she sulks and he feels terrible. Way to go DD.

It really appeared that both dogs knew which side their bread was buttered on.

Okay so the night was really cold. Her master did not really want to go out and get colder. She solved her potential problem of getting frozen feet while walking on the we ground outside. She made sure her master stayed put!

Then I found Sox. Licking his paws and quite comfortable near the heater thank you!

Let me put it to you this way. Sox went for a walk. We left his mother [DD] at her old home and adventured into the night air. Cool, crisp and it was to be a heavy frost the next morning night air.

Supervising the nut with the camera
can give a dog 'cold' feet.

Now here is the story.

At 11 am on this very cold morning the door was opened again. Out we went. The plants in the vegetable garden were so frozen cold that the leaves had frozen and weltered. The steam was melting from the vegetable patches wire fence section.

Problem with all this sand moving is that many of the buried dog bone places were altered. She really did not appreciate bones in the vegetable garden or hidden in the longer grass. 'Long' because it was just too wet to mow the grass safety.

As a dog I appreciate both long and short grass. long for hiding those bones. Short for having a terrific roll around and getting rid [ or just disturbing] the live stock carried! So why cannot humans just mow the parts not around the edges.

11am and still only 10 deg Cel. The sun is shining and the frost was melting.

It took a month to move all the sand around the garden. now at least the dog has somewhere 'dry' to lie down on so that the bones are chewed without the parts getting lost in the waterlogged back yard.

Cute garden.. but I berried my bones in there.

The part you cannot see [far corner behind the big leaf] is a 'hidy' hole area. When the white banksia rose grows more[ green part on the right] and the Elderberry tree [hidden by the caravan] grow larger this year some shade will be given from the high summer temperatures. What you cannot see is the fig tree that when it gets bigger more shade will be available. And if lying on the ground is not what is wanted then under the caravan is the concrete of the drive way. Cool air just drifting through here. Since dogs love both heat. air change and shade then this dog really should have all bases covered.
It's wet. And there is nearly a flood out there. So here is the poor dog sulking that he cannot go out and play with the friends... the cats next door. At least the sulking is on the old mat that he has !

Mind you this photo was taken a little while after the dog got a towel down to remove the saturation water levels within the fur. He even got a comb down.

I suppose he wants the heater turned on next. Now that just is not going to happen. I did wonder If I could reach that nice big pink doona cover in the cupboard. But then again pink and ginger would have clashed!
I am so sure that I have trained the dog to actually think! This dog knows what buttons to push, which puppy dog eyes to use for what occasion. When to look board. When to jump about as though I am giving him the time of day. When to hide. How not to be found on My mothers bed. How to grovel. When to test the boundaries out again. Most important 'which side his bread is buttered on!'

Early morning walks mean beating
the odds on the weather too.

Before September 19th 2011 the world hours per week equated to 120 hours on call. This meant being available bot night and day shifts. Since the shifts were at least 12 hours long things became pretty time consuming. I was able to squeeze in a hour off between busy times. How ever ever taken a dog for a walk with your mobile phone on and in your pocket. It would ring when we were 30 minutes into the walk. On the other end I knew the owner of the taxis I drove would be waiting and fuming. He would have promised the customer that I would be maybe 15 minutes away. So no matter what I did I was cheating someone. Most of all the dog that I was meant to be walking.

I no longer have the owner of the taxis problem as I no longer drive in that industry. Relief. However the dog still needed to be walked. Both night and day. My ex-husband had dogs as well that he never found time to walk. Strange between us we have the three younger children's dogs. They, having left home, adopted a dog and then brought back the dogs for us to 'mind'.

One thing I noticed about nine months ago was exactly how unfit I was actually becoming. That lady of about 35 years old kept running past me everyday. Out of nothing else to do I tried to run between the road markers on the edge of the road. Laughable when I would not even make one. And I kept on driving those taxi's.

Early morning light is far better to see you with
than LCD lights or actual day light glare.

Over the last six months I have had the diagnosis of being on the High Functioning Autism Spectrum So being up and about at times when there are not many people really do not bother me. Developing a community where people on or involved with people on the spectrum is a added challenge. Night time driving affected my eyes sight re the glare factors of LCD on coming driving lights. Early morning is a very good relief on my eyes. Until the idiots who drive around town with their high beams or fog lights approach catch me in their beams. Then I have to stop what I am doing as I really cannot see one foot in front of the other.

Hatching a plan while out with his brother.
Then the night flies got in to this picture

Having left the taxis schedule far behind I am now walking the dog morning and night still. However in the mornings I'm out of here usually about 0530hrs and 'shuffle around' 5 km at a slow run pace. Takes me one and a half hours to do this. The dog how ever must travel about 15 to 20 kms on that one run. He's all over the place. Sniffing here and there. Watering that plant and this tree there.

The problem is that he has a practised set of hang dog looks. Come on I really gotta go out side for something... now is NOW after three attempts at ignoring him it just does not work any longer. I have to go....

Once home he gets dry dog strips, and a morning feed. A towel down as he usually has gone for a swim or jumped about through the long wet grass. And so here I am typing this post out and there he is sound asleep on his cushion!

" I hid the post card from the cold. Now really just cause the other one is cool why do you want ot feel cold. I care so I hid the post card."

How to buy the line of keeping your owner in ignorance.

Really. It was not just the only 'catty' thing I have ever done!
Well. We made it home before the rain came down... in bucket fulls.. I made it in dry. The dog however is another story. Wet and muddy just about explains it.

Last night the dog found a 'something' that had water in it. Where the mud came from I am not sure. However it was all up just one side of his body. Every where.

This morning the dog decides to take a bath. In a public pond where the ducks sometimes go. The reeds are all around the pond. The frogs croaking. The little purple leaves floating on the waters surface.

And there is the dog. Quite happy swimming around in the water!

On coming out though I stayed well away . The water he shook off was 'wet' and I was dry. And staying that way

On our morning walk through 'the Pines' the dog and I noticed someone again has dumped household rubbish.

This time though the dogs actions were different. I wondered if there was a snake or something about to attach the dog and he kept leaping backwards. Then I saw it.

Now dog has been raised amongst kittens. When he was smaller I swore he thought he was one. So approaching this little fur ball was something he would normally do. However the kitten was not having any of it. No way.

As I approached the dog tried to move the kitten away with his nose. That really was not going to work. Someone had obviously abandoned the beautiful long haired mixed breed kitten. Years ago I had a similar cat with fur this long. Everything got mattered in it when it was in the garden. Burrs and fur balls were common. To have abandoned an unwanted kitten is the height of not caring. If it survived in the wild it would die an ugly death of open sores through just having born with long fur.

So I requested the dog to move away and stop. Waited for the kitten to approach and after a few seconds picked it up and carried it home.

Got most of the way home any way. Then the kitten really wanted to be put down. As it turned out it then followed the dog all the way home. I think the kitten thinks the dog is it's mother figure! in so much as the food in the dogs bowl is eaten, the milk has gone, the rubbish bins have
become toy boxes and now the cat wants the computer mouse. And now is perched on my shoulders.

Talk about a twist in life's <strike>tail</strike> tale.

Later today I have to go into town so the kitten and I will be going to a drop off centre - like the vets - for a check over before kitten sterilization and adoption by someone else.

All this has tired the dog out. He's really not sulking. Exceedingly put out by what he considers a social climber... the Kitten is now on my neck

Where is the dog chain you wonder as you arrive home and there he is. Grateful to see you. To be with with you. You footsteps are dogged. The tail is wagging. The pout is coming close as the eyes droop.

So you sign off from what you are doing knowing that by the time you get back all there is for you is the sleep mode.

Even the dogs mother is the same with the expressions.

However you can bribe him to not wait up and annoy you while you sleep. Having spent one hour of my life walking behind an obviously run like mad energy crazed dog I cheat. There are home is a selection of low fat dog treats. He knows which ones he likes. He also knows how to remind me if I have forgotten what he considers his right!

I am so sure that this 'doggy' look response is now a 'past down the line DNA weakness' in humans. So much so that humans are conditioned to feed on 'doggy look. Just push the button and they love you even more. Unfortuneitly too much food and too little exercise and the dog get unhealthy. Hence these very late at night and then early morning walks that are required.

Months ago I started making healthy dog foods to supplement his diet - and my budget. The easier method is to purchase a few packets of these dog treats as they take less room than the home made one. That said the dog still enjoys the home made varieties. He's ever hopeful the 'meat is still on the bone' so to say.

Since he has both a short and a long haired coat he always seems to shed fur. Years ago we had two Large dogs. The male one taught us that the best vacuums for pet hair were ones where the dog made it real easy by trusting the handler as he just stood there letting me vacuum him down. In fact this dog complained if I do not do a good job. This dog however 'goes' when the cupboard door that has the vacuum stored behind it is opened. So much for vacuuming the dog.

So today I left him home while I went and paid for a 'Turbo" vacuum just to get the fur out of the car. Then in went the smelly perfume. Hope he likes the new refreshed [non doggy] car smell tomorrow!

In between that both dog and I have been trying to cut the lawn around the house over the last few days. No luck as to the rain making everything soggy.
Sometimes when walking the dog in either the nearby Pines of through Glendonald park I really think that he is getting ready to drive the car. Especially when then I think I am going to just sneak out and drive away by my self. He has other plans.

So like this dog in color [although he has less white] I really had to laugh at this video.

For several months now the dog and I have been out walking either at night or in the morning. Started off just going around the block. Okay I trudged around the block and he ran crazy.

To this day I would say that he does about 4 times the amount of walking that I get in. However I today noticed that When I got up instead of sitting at the computer and logging on I actually was walking in the rain and enjoying it too. The time was 5 o'clock when I got up and had breakfast. About 6.25 am when we got home.

Something I missed about this time slot was there were no butterflies. Monarch ones tend to enjoy settling on his golden red coloured coat. He gets so annoyed ... probably thinking they are free-loading their ride.

Over this time I have instilled a wait at the corner / cutter for me to catch up. Either that or you will be coming back and sitting next to me. Fuss over him and he loves it. Responding back with good natured "I'll put up with this affection thing... just scratch me there, not there attitude".

Since he loves running back to me I wait until he's nearly there and then I will move a step. Better than just being missed by a cannon ball in full pelt. Watching him sail past putting on the brakes is worth a chuckle or two. Other times I will command him to here, stop, heal. All the basic you will do as I say - now- commands.

Today though I am so glad the dog towels are near the door. He was wet. Now he's stinking like a damp dog.

So now my day begins. After the cuppa's made, the bread is thrown together in the bread maker, on goes the computer. Into facebook I go and there is an article about "Walk like an Australian" which is actually selling the concept of walking with walking poles to increase the blood /oxygen concentration, to lighten the mood and basically get fitter. I am having trouble working out how to take this dog for a walk and use these poles at the same time.

The dog has a tendency to lye there and wait. Sheepish doggy looks all day resulting in me finally getting the dog cord and watching him joyishly become reactivated like a well coiled spring sprung.

There are certain walking routes that are taken depending on the time of day. daytime usually sees us within distance of where people gather within this town. Then comes the evening and early morning walks. These he loves best as I release him from his chain as we walk along the deserted park and town footpaths.

A few afternoons there have been so many Monarch butterflies around that the dog looks so cute when they settle on him. Since his coat is the same colour as the Monarch Butterfly orangey brown shade at times only the black of the butterfly can be seen as we walk along. However when the butterfly lands on his nose I have to stop, finish laughing and then we can move on through the fluttering butterflies once again.

I think that there is no rhyme or reason as to where he chooses to mark his sent at. Oft times he goes to my right, Then to my left. Back over to my right and so forth. Because of his colouring he blends in very well in the darkness.

Fascinating how far dogs can hear the click of the tongue or the fingers from. However the chase of a rabbit id another thing . A sharp reprimand and he's back again. Happy with tongue hanging out and panting all the while.
Due to other commitments and lousy weather I have not walked either of the dogs. Poor things were getting claustrophobic and running around in circles. That is when they were not under the caravan, or the house, staying dry.

Luckily for one dog his Master came around and took him back to his place. Out the back of this place is a lot of concrete. Walking and running around on this concrete surface has worn back the claws.

The other dog however was still here as his Master is working seven very long days. While his car is being repaired there is a "long" three kilometre walk to get her and play with his dog. The dogs claws were really getting long. In fact they were click clacking around the floor as he walked around here.

A few days ago both of us needed to go for a walk. So walk we have been doing regularly. Today's there was three of them. Totalling about 17 kilometres in all. Six over the other side of town and then back. About another three up and back to the towns shopping centre.

The first walk of the day took two and a half hours. We headed towards a bridge that I know in Hazelwood. The before we got there side tracked and went into the bush. Actually it was the first time I had been in this bush along the tracks. The rubbish that has been left behind in trailer load drops was amazing. Chairs, lounge sweats, t.v., car parts, bottles, tins, clothes toys and even garden compost and waste. Then thee were the rain water flow off 's. Some of these were over a meter deep and right in the middle of where the vehicle tyres go along the fire brakes.

Next we turned a corner and there was the hill. Must admit that I walked up. Not bothering to talk even a guess at the steepness of that hill. Took a good ten minutes to get to the top. The view was astounding though. Well worth the walk. After that hill it was all the way home.

The poor dog walked dragging it's tongue out with a smile on it's face. he kept wanting to chase rabbits and run circles around me at the same time.

I think he's nuts. Cute but nuts at the same time. He thinks nothing of it now.... He is asleep.

Since there is an apple tree out in the back yard. The dogs enjoy lying under it during the summer season. Contentedly chewing on the apple they either pluck off the tree or that have ripened, subsequently fallen.

Then again when I am chewing on nuts they also like their fair share too. Almonds included.

What did I read today in 'they actually eat that' that apple seeds and almonds have cyanide in them. Most alarming is that "... even minor amounts of cyanide can poison pets like dogs, so please do not share your trail mix with them." Oops. Now all I have to do is convince the dogs of this! Oh well more for me.

Apples growing on the side of the road have turned up in dog biscuits. Or the dogs eat the apple cores while I have the fruit of the apple. I pick while they snake and insect hunt under the trees. A good system this share responsibility.

While the dogs are not too keen on some bounty foods the same goes fruits such as plums and red currents. These are not their favorite in biscuits either!

Horseradish and dandelion are everywhere. However these are left behind as we have enough of them in the back yard. Mushrooms and dill are regrowing and while the dogs do their doggy thin of sniffing every bush, piece of grass they are tolerant waiting and watching me pick the things I want to cook with on home arrival or or dehydrate for later use.
