by Adam Webster

With the advancement of technology in every aspect of our modern life, safety of your pet has also used the technology to maximize the protection and tracking. As dogs are man’s best friends, they cannot be left helpless and alone by their masters.

In the past, many people lost their dogs for different reasons. They were lost because they escaped, or because they were stolen, or because they were just wondering around and then were caught by the ‘animal’ protection people’ thinking that they are street dogs and have no masters or owners. Then, there was that brilliant yet simple idea to prevent all of that from happening. With the technology used by GPS (global positioning system), people can now locate their dogs with just a click of a button.

The idea is simple enough. Attach a GPS receiver to the dogs collar. Whenever the dog is not where he should be, activate the GPS system installed to your cell phone. Immediately, the GPS receiver on the dogs collar is activated. The SIM card on his receiver sends the location of your family friend back to your phone. In seconds, you know your dogs location. You can even give the dog boundaries. If he crosses those boundaries, you get an alert.

GPS dog collars can be purchased in two ways. The first is like a no contract cell phone. You pay big at first, but then have no monthly charge. The second is like getting a free cell phone. Little charge at first, then you must pay for a contracted period of months. This system only gives you the notice when your dog passes his boundary. Then you must contact the company providing the service to get the rest of the information at a fee. The former system lets you have all the information without any further fee.

You will find these devices available in many differing brand names. This allows you to choose the system that works best for you and fits in your budget.

There are many brand names and companies selling these devices. That is a good thing as customers will have the option to choose the best deal available that they can afford and suits them the best. The thing is there are two parties involved in developing and providing customers with the dog tracking systems.

Before purchasing a GPS dog collar, here are some factors to consider. The weight of the GPS unit should not hinder the dog since he or she will be wearing the unit at all times. It should be compact enough that the dog cannot reach the unit to chew on it rendering it useless. The accuracy of the unit is also very important since it will lead you to your dog.

Pets are like family. When they wander off, we want to know where they are. We are concerned about their safety and well-being. We want them to be safe at home. We know the dangers that are lurking outside our home or yard and are fearful when they leave their boundaries. Hum… I wonder if they make these collars for teenagers?

There is a reason the Boston Terrier is a popular dog in the United States. He’s a sweet, cute dog that enjoys the attention he derives from his human friends.

General Appearance and Description

The Boston Terrier is an intelligent and mannered dog.

They are gentle dogs that enjoy feeling like they are part of the family.

Boston Terrier are small-size dogs that have small, erect ears, short and wide muzzles and dark, large eyes. They are clean-looking dogs with straight and muscular limbs.

The coat of a Boston Bull Terrier is typically brindle and white, or black and white. Some Boston Terrier puppies are brown and white.

Basic Temperament

Your Boston Terrier will be sensitive to the tone of your voice, and will feed off the energy in the home. They can be rambunctious and loud, or calm and quiet. Much depends on the mood of the house, the quality of any training the Boston Terrier has had, and whether or not a pack leader exists in the house.

The Boston Bull Terrier is a good watch dog as most will believe their home to be their castle and will do their utmost to protect it.

Care Required

Boston Terrier dogs and puppies are easy to groom. Their short, smooth coat requires little attention. You should bathe your Bull Terrier only when necessary and comb or brush only as needed.

The only daily grooming needed is a quick wipe down with a damp cloth, especially in the eye area.

Not an ideal breed for those with allergies, the Boston Terrier sheds an average amount for his breed.

Exercise Requirements

If your Boston Terrier Puppies isn’t given adequate physical and mental stimulation, he could become high strung and troublesome.

Instead, Boston Terrier breeders will recommend that you give your dog a long daily walk and regular play sessions.

This breed will generally do well living in a house with a yard or in an apartment as long as his daily activity needs are met.

Training

The intelligent Boston Terrier takes well to being trained. He understands your commands easily and wants to please you. These dogs are very sensitive and response to the human voice.

Be sure that you train the Boston Bull Terrier with firm and consistent effort. If you don’t establish yourself as the “top dog,” so to speak, he will.

Because these dogs can be dominant if training is not done properly, they will often cause problems during the training process or might become aggressive when training is attempted. If training is begun early, however, and sticks to the concept of firm and consistent, these dogs should pose no problems.

Some Boston Terriers can be hard to housebreak.

Height and Weight

The full-grown Boston Bull Terrier will be about 15 to 17 inches tall and will weigh from 10 to 25 pounds.

Health and Longevity

While these dogs have their share of health challenges, they can live a full and long life.

Some of the health issues include wheezing and snoring, thanks to their short face. They also might have problems in hot weather, and some dogs will overheat with exertion in the heat. Some dogs have a problem with drooling.

Tumors, particularly of the skin and heart, are common in Boston Terriers. Their eyes, which are generally prominent, are prone to injury.

If a Boston Terrier is bred badly, some will have a bone defect in the skull that can stunt brain growth. Though not incredibly common, this can result in a retarded dog.

Most Boston Terrier dogs will live to be older than 15 years.

Suitability

Boston Terriers are very good with children and are excellent when living in a house with senior citizens. This dog is also very good with strangers, so having a houseful of people is never a bad idea.

The Boston Terrier likes to live in a house with other non-canine pets, but generally doesn’t get along with other dogs, unless both are introduced as puppies.

Some common dog health problems are preventable. Several health problems for dogs can have severe health consequences if not treated.

Fleas are perhaps the most common dog health problem. Dog owners may not think of fleas as a dog health problem, but fleas can carry parasitic disease and trigger skin allergies in dogs.

Fleas can be difficult to get rid of, especially if not treated promptly. Dog owners should carefully follow the directions when using flea products such as sprays and shampoo. Monthly applications of dog flea repellent may be beneficial.

Heartworms are another common dog health problems caused by parasites. Heartworm infestations can be fatal. Since heartworm disease and the treatment of heartworms can be fatal, the dog owner should consider using a medication that protects the dog from heartworms.

Pawing at the ears or shaking the head can be signs of an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites or bacteria. Dogs with earflaps are most susceptible to ear infections.

Many common dog diseases are prevented by vaccines. A dog owner should discuss the recommended vaccination schedule for dogs with the veterinarian to make sure that the dog is protected from disease.

Distemper is one dog disease for which there is a vaccine. Rabies, Parvo, and kennel cough are other dog diseases that can be prevented with vaccinations.

One common dog health problem that is not prevented by vaccines is bloat. This potentially fatal condition is caused by the twisting of the stomach. Large dog breeds are prone to bloat. Dog owners should not let their dogs be active after eating.

Some common dog health problems are problems with the dogs skeletal structure. Large dog breeds are often susceptible to hip dysplasia. Dachshunds may develop spinal problems.

Dental problems are a type of common dog health problem. Many dog owners ignore their dogs dental health. Dog owners should remember that tartar and plaque naturally buildup on their dogs teeth. Regular brushing and veterinary dental visits can help prevent serious dental problems.

by Donald Russo

Pugs are fun and cute dogs that generally add much to a household. They are easy to care for, but present a few challenges due to their spirited nature.

General Appearance and Description

The pug is often called the cutest of all dogs, and it’s likely due to his characteristic stocky and compact body and his punched in face. He has a square body that is framed by a sleek, soft coat and accented by a forehead that looks to be worried.

Most pugs are apricot, fawn, black or silver colored. They will all have a black muzzle and prominent eyes. The eyes are nearly always dark and thoughtful. Pugs have short tails that are usually tightly curled.

Basic Temperament

Pug owners often refer to them as bigger dogs than their size allows. This is due to their very large personality. Pugs are playful and charm nearly everyone they come in contact with. That’s quite likely as much a process affected by their sweet looks as their sweet personality. They are affectionate and loving and intensely loyal. Pugs are quite smart as well.

But pug dog breeders will tell you that these dogs are willful and quite difficult to handle, especially if the humans let them believe they are smarter and stronger than the humans.

If you don’t establish yourself as the leader of the pack, the pug will, and he might exhibit some troubling behaviors like guarding furniture or other things in the house. While they are not aggressive dogs, pugs can be firm about their need to guard, simply because nobody else has stepped into the role of leader.

Care required

While they might take a bit of work in the behavior department, pugs are easy to care for. They need a good brushing every now and then and a shampoo only when absolutely necessary.

Because black pug puppies and other pugs are very short haired, it’s important to dry them off after a bath quickly and wrap them in a towel to prevent chills.

The creases on the face which give the pug their distinctive look require some care. They must be cleaned regularly with a cotton ball.

While they are very short haired, pugs do shed heavily a few times a year.

Exercise Requirements

Pugs should be taken on regular walks, but these aren’t dogs that require a lot of physical stimulation. Most of them, in fact, can’t handle too much of that at all. They are very sensitive to climate, so taking them out in cold or hot weather is not advised.

Because they don’t require intense physical activity, pugs are a good choice for people who live in apartments or small spaces. Regardless of their living arrangements, because of their sensitivity to heat and cold, they should be kept mostly indoors.

Training

Pugs aren’t the most trainable of dogs, but they can be trained and will enjoy having some structure.

Because they are highly intelligent and cleve dogsr, pugs do become tired quickly of training methods, so be sharp and mix things up when you are training these dogs.

When looking at learning more about Baby pugs, read as much as you can because the Miniature pug is truly a incredible dog breed.

Height and Weight

Most male pugs will be about 12 to 14 inches high and 13 to 20 pounds. Female pugs will be a bit smaller, with a height around 10 to 12 inches and will weigh about 13 to 18 pounds.

Health and Longevity

Pug dogs generally have a fair number of health problems.

Your pug is prone to colds and, as we discussed earlier, will be stressed by extremes in weather, from cold to hot.

The short muzzle on the pug causes breathing problems and they are prone to wheezing and other chronic breathing issues.

Pugs are prone to obesity, so watching their diet is essential. Some can be prone to laziness, so it’s best to force your pug to walk and get some exercise.

Finally, any pug owner can speak to the pug’s penchant for snoring. They snore loudly and often, and many a pug owner has lost some sleep in the night until they learn how to deal with the snoring.

In general, pugs are hearty dogs, and can live to be about 12 to 15 years old on average.

Suitability

Pugs get along well with other dogs and in general with other pets in the house. They love children and enjoy meeting new people. Their addition to the household is usually a good one.

Pugs also make excellent pets for senior citizens, who enjoy their laid back and friendly nature and their ability to make good lap pets.

The different lines of the Blackmouth Cur include the Ladner Yellow Blackmouth Cur that originated from Mississippi. This breed was the first blackmouth cur to be registered in a kennel club, the National Kennel Club on April of 1964. This line is particularly good in: treeing squirrel, raccoon and bobcat; hunting hogs and cattle, and search and rescue services.

The Red Blackmouth Cur is another line that came from Alabama. It has been useful as a herder, hunter and guard dog. It is said that the courthouses of Howardtown, Alabama owned this line of the Blackmouth Cur in the 1940s.

Another line is the Wetherford Ben Blackmouth Cur which originated from Texas and was used mostly for herding. The Florida Blackmouth Cur is another line that originated from Florida that was used primarily for herding, too. The Blackmouth Cur breed is considered as a multi-purpose dog in the United States and its fame now reaches to countries as far as Haiti, Russia, India and some pats of Europe.

The Blackmouth Cur has been called by different kinds of names such as farmer’s dog, Shepherds Hound, cow dog and Herdsman’s dog; and has been spelled in forms like Cu, Curre and Kurre. Currently, there is no officially recognized Blackmouth Cur breed in the American Kennel Club (AKC). In the United Kennel Club, however, they recognize the Red Blackmouth Cur as the standard for the Blackmouth Cur line.

The Blackmouth Cur is very good at treeing and hunting, and possesses an outstanding skill in jumping and climbing. For this reason, it is important to confine this active dog in a fenced area that are as high as six meters or more. The Blackmouth Cur is also noted for its courage and strength as it never backs down in encounters with other large animals even bulls and bears.

Towards the family, this dog is very loyal and is very eager to please. It is very protective of its master, his family and property thats why it makes a good watchdog and guard dog. It is also a fast learner and an intelligent breed and is not too sensitive towards reinforcements; in fact, you can even use a harsh tone in correcting this breed.

The appearance of the Blackmouth Cur is composed of a short and rough or smooth coat. The colors appear in red, fawn, brindle, yellow, black and white. The Blackmouth Cur also has large and webbed feet just like the Catahoula Leopard which is another American breed of dog.

Hailed as one of the biggest and probably one of the oldest dog breeds, the Dogue de Bordeaux is definitely a stunner. Also called as French Mastiff, this breed is completely amazing in its gigantic figure and muscle-prone body. With a dog this big, you can definitely expect strength, power and commanding presence.

As early as 14th century, this breed has been flourishing in the region of Bordeaux, France as a prized hunter, herder and guard of families and properties. Its powerful and hard body and unsurpassed intellect has been used to carry heavy loads, pull product-filled carts and fight enemies with the French army. Additionally, another job that adds to this breed’s resume is bull baiting wherein bulls, jaguars and grizzlies are pitted against it and the winner can only be declared if either one is too exhausted to fight or is dead.

This breed is a famous companion for the wealthy and was used to guard their properties such as vineyard and large houses. The commoners also owned French Mastiffs but were not highly regarded due to the obvious fact that they were of the poor masses. When French Revolution struck the region, the wealthy families and their Dogues perished but the poor people and their Douges survived.

The survivor Dogues were trained and reared to be the best breed and their descendants possessed champion spirits and very agreeable dispositions. In World War I, the Dogue’s extreme devotedness and loyalty to its master angered Adolf Hitler. Because of this and some unclear reason, he commanded the killing of the French Mastiff.

The French Mastiff is said to have descended from either the Tibetan Mastiff or the Greek-Roman Molosser which accompanied the Roman soldiers in their invasion of ancient Europe. Some speculate that this breed existed in two types before. The Dogue and the Doguins, but the latter became extinct leaving the Dogue to continue the original line.

There are also many dog breeds today that originated from the Dogue de Bordeaux and these breeds were particularly bred for bull baiting purposes. The Bullmastiff and the Bulldog are only two of the modern breeds that have been proven to be descendants of the Dogue. Indeed, tracing back the history of these pseudo-Dogues, you will realize that breeders were trying to create a smaller version of the giant French Mastiff but at the same time still very powerful in crushing the bulls and bears.

The Dogue de Bordeaux of the present have been carefully bred to possess a calmer and non-aggressive temperament, very far from their bull baiting days temperament. Today, this breed is still a loyal companion, a vigilant guard dog and an ever reliable family pet. You would never expect it for its size but this French breed has the tendency to be very attached with the family that owns it and it is very affectionate towards them, too.

Often, this breed is being compared to the English Mastiff but the English Mastiff measures its appearance in terms of height and length while the Dogue is measured by its width and muscle built. The standard weight for the Dogue de Bordeaux is a minimum of 110 lbs for the male and 99 lbs for the female. The coat is short, fine and soft and comes in shades of light red to deep ultra red with patterns of black, brown or red.

Very few people see clipping their dogs as an art. Instead, they tackle areas like scraggly hair on the feet to keep their pets from tracking in mud. They mostly ignore other areas. However, in an effort to get rid of undesirable hair growth, many dog owners forget that they can hurt their dogs.

Remember to pay attention to the breed of your dog when clipping his or her fir. Long haired breeds must be clipped correctly to prevent dirt from accumulating close to the skin and causing problems. Fleas, ticks, and man other parasites may also breed more easily in a poorly or improperly clipped coat.

You should also be sure to keep your pet’s nails trimmed to avoid pain in walking and breakage. An overly long mail will have a tendency to turn to the side, and may even grow to puncture the skin. Dogs with too long nails will also easily catch them on things, causing breakage and splitting.

It’s easy to accidentally hurt your dog while clipping his or her nails, since the quick in the nail’s center bleeds when cut. This is where the nerves and the blood vessels are located, and it keeps the nail alive and growing. However, if you cut the nail too short or accidentally splinter it, the exposed quick will be painful.

To cut your dog’s hair and nails, always use the sharpest clippers you can, and choose the right tools. Human nail clippers are wrong for dogs’ nails - use ones purchased at your local pet supply store instead. There are a number of great new nail clippers out there that are made to keep pain and damage to a minimum.

If you live in an area that’s cold in winter, don’t clip your dog during the cold months unless you have to. The winter can be very stressful for your dog if his coat isn’t long enough to protect him. Remember that dogs can get frostbite the same way we can.

Never cut your pet’s hair too short in the summer, either. Otherwise, you could expose her skin to the harmful rays of the sun. Dogs’ fur keeps them cooler in the summer as well as warm in the winter. A slight cut will be fine, but make sure you leave enough fur to protect your dog.

Don’t clip your dog when he or she is ill, since it can stress your pet even more. Clip only when needed to get rid of broken nails or dirty fur.

Walking your dog on concrete daily can help keep him or her healthy. This will help you wear down the nail on a gradual basis and will keep them even. That way, you and your dog don’t have to go through the clipping process.

Of course, to get the best results, you’ll want to find a professional groomer who knows the correct way to clip particular breeds.

by Dr. Sherry Timmerson DVM

People all over the world regard their animals as family members. They could keep small creatures, or 100 pound Labs. These pets can expect the same treatment as their human companions; even down to their pet health insurance.

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans spent roughly $10.1 billion for pet health care in 2007 ” a 40 percent increase from 2006. The insurance industry isn’t ignoring these numbers. Jack Stephens, founder of Pet’s Best Insurance, says that Americans spend roughly $250 million annually on pet insurance. That figure is expected to increase to $1 billion by 2011, he says. That makes pet insurance one of the fastest growing insurance lines.

These pet insurance plans can be very straightforward or complicated, depending on your needs. While most often taken out on the family dog or cat, they are available for almost all pets and livestock.

Like all insurance plans, you always hope you don’t need the coverage. But often when dealing with pets, the need is sudden. And, if surgery or emergency treatment is needed, the cost can often soar into the thousands of dollars. Even purebred or pedigreed animals aren’t safe from this fact, and they often have more genetic troubles.

The ASPCA has noticed a surge in the number of people contacting their office in recent months. Well meaning owners who simply can no longer afford the often routine vet care that their pets require.

Pet care plans generally covers vet bills that arise from illnesses and injuries. Many plans also offer preventative care, and liability coverage in case your pet damages someones property or person.

In addition, pet insurance policies often cover the cost of advertisements and rewards if a dog or cat goes missing, kennel costs if the owner is hospitalized and the cost of holiday cancellation if a pet requires life-saving surgery.

This makes it important not to shop on price alone. How would you feel denying your pet a life saving procedure knowing that it saved you $1 a month?

Pet health insurance policies are becoming more and more common, and many people find comfort in knowing that in the event of a major illness, their pets can be properly cared for without seriously affecting their finances.

Making a choice between expensive health care for a pet or ending the life of that animal companion is never easy. Wallace Sife, who as founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement has counseled hundreds of guilt-racked pet owners, said, “There is no right answer.”

While a pet insurance plan won’t spare you from the emotional hardship of a pet needing costly care, it can free you from worrying about the financial stress, and hopefully help you make a better decision.

These are the basics behind this issue, and it is important to do your research so you know exactly what you are covered for and how much this will cost. A simple internet search should yield a variety of insurance providers, and you should compare their websites to see which gives you the best deal. Do not just go for the cheapest option - make sure that your pet is covered so that you will be prepared and looked after if anything does go wrong with their health.

If the Standard Bull Terrier appears to be a ferocious gladiator dog and a gentle companion, the Miniature Bull Terrier is exactly the same only smaller. The Standard Bull Terrier was originally used as a fighter dog in the notorious bull baiting past time of 1800s England but when this act was prohibited, breeders started to take care of this breed for companionship purposes only. Soon after, the Miniature Bull Terrier was born in the purpose of owning the same Bull Terrier appearance and characteristics but only in a more portable size.

Like the Standard Bull Terrier, the Mini Bull Terrier is distinct for having an egg-shaped head. The eyes are also closely set and triangular and the tail is rather carried horizontally than vertically. Its image manifests strength through its lean, compact and muscular body.

This breed is tightly wrapped in a body- hugging coat that is short, course and shiny. The coat usually comes out in full white color, white with colored markings, or purely colored. The only acceptable colors for this breed are white, black, fawn, red, brindle and tricolor (blue and liver are frowned upon).

According to records, when the first Bull Terrier came out, it actually looked more of a miniature Bull Terrier. But because breeders will need it for bull baiting, they crossed the breed with the Spanish Pointer and the result was the Standard Bull Terrier. During the early 1900s, Bull Terriers were bred to be of different sizes that some came out looking like a Chihuahua.

It was in 1970s when a weight limit was set in order to group the Standard Bull Terrier and the Miniature Bull Terrier. The miniatures was agreed to stand not more than 14 inches but not smaller than 10 inches. The weight is also agreed to scale 25 to 35 kilograms only.

The Miniature Bull Terrier, like its standard counterpart is also fearless and ferocious in defending the human masters. But like a natural terrier, this breed has the tendency to have bouts of stubbornness. This dog is too energetic to be handled by small children and so training for the dog and instruction for the kids are necessary to avoid knocking them over.

When it comes to fighting against other breeds, the Mini Bull Terrier doesn’t mind their sizes. It still fights with all its might especially if it is for protecting the family. However, on a normal day, the Mini Bull Terrier is playful, flowing with energy and loves to socialize with people.

If you have a small place, adopting a Miniature Bull Terrier would be a good idea because they are not as active as they are outdoors. What’s important is that the Mini Bull Terrier gets plenty of exercise outdoors in order for it to stay fit physically and mentally. This breed also requires minimal grooming since its short coat is kept neat through combing or brushing once a week only.

Puppies are on people’s favorite things list, as well they should be. After the initial excitement of the newcomer gradually mellows, it’s time to take on the not as adorable but very essential task of puppy potty training.

Potty training is the start of many unique and special bonding moments with your little friend. While it can be inconvenient at times especially in the beginning, it will be well worth it in the future. Here are some puppy training tips to help you and your pup on your way to potty independence.

Recognize your puppy’s limitations. They will not be able to control their bodily functions quite as well yet so do not serve them their meals right before their sleeping time. In the beginning, you will have to wake up in the night to bring your puppy out to relieve himself. You’ll be a little cranky and impatient but do not rush the dog if he’s not yet ready. At this point, it is important to instill in him good habits that he will carry his whole life.

Schedule the puppy’s intake of food and water and follow it as closely as possible every day. You want to train his body to remember certain periods in the day when to eat and eliminate. Take him out for a walk and potty first thing in the morning and before you sleep at night. Fifteen minutes after meal times bring him outside in a designated area to do his business. As you walk around the spot keep saying a phrase you want the puppy to associate with toilet urges like ‘go potty’ until he does.

Immediately after successfully eliminating, reward the puppy with enthusiastic accolades and a treat. Play with him for a few minutes before walking back indoors. The puppy should realize that ‘going potty’ at that particular spot was a pleasant and satisfying experience for him. After an hour go back to the spot and wait to see if he wants to do it a second time. Establishing good habits is the most important thing in puppy potty training.

Now it’s time to teach him how to request to go outside for toilet. Sounds difficult? It’s not as hard as you think. Fasten a bell at the end of a rope and tie to the door. When you go out for your special walks, give the bell a little nudge and say ‘go potty’ clearly so the puppy will hear. Do this for two weeks. After that time, say ‘go potty’ when you reach the door but don’t do anything. Wait for the dog to touch the bell from habit which he will with patient practice. When he does, reward him with plenty of praise and open the door.

Repeat this process every single time the puppy uses his toilet privileges. Your dog will catch on and understand this as his signal to want to go out. Before long, he will know enough to tap the bell or door by himself whenever he needs to unload.

That’s all there is to it. Properly and consistently done, these puppy training tips should have successfully gotten your dog potty trained easily. Now you can go on to your next, hopefully less smelly adventure!

There are many ways that you can use your knowledge of animals to impress your friends. There are lots of great dog tricks that you can teach your dog quickly and easily that will be sure to impress. When you are looking at the various types of dog tricks that you might decide to do, one of the most important things to think about is the way that your dog is going to be obedient to you. With the right combination of treats and praise, you can teach your dog to do just about anything. Therefore, it is first important to look at how to teach them a trick.

Dog owners all over are probably already familiar with dog treats that are out on the market. If you aren’t, you can go to your local pet store and purchase some. They should be small, low in calorie so that your dog doesn’t get fat, and of course tasty. In addition, be sure that you only give your dog this particular treat when you want him or her to do a trick. Give your dog the same treat every time you want a trick to be performed. Otherwise, your dog will be confused and will not necessarily know that you want him to perform a trick.

Sit and Stay

The first trick is not only one of the best, but is a classic and all time favorite. It’s the sit and stay routine and exemplifies the fact that your dog has good behavior. The first step to accomplishing this routine is to hold a treat in your hand and then hold your hand above your dog’s head. This way, he has to look up to see the treat. While he is looking up, he will be inclined to sit down as a natural reaction. Once he does this say the word “sit”. Next, move your hand with the treat to a new position (either forward or backward in the air) so that he has to move forward or backward to see it. He may or may not sit down. If he doesn’t, gently push his bottom to the floor and say “sit”. Otherwise when he sits down again say “sit”. Do this a couple of times and then praise him out loud and give him the treat. Practice this daily. The next thing to do is to move on to “stay” which is a little harder. Start by putting your hand, open palm, in front of his face and verbally say “stay”. Then begin to back away. Afterwards, if he stayed even for a little bit, give him the treat and some praise. Continue to practice this until he can stay for longer periods of time.

Bring It Back

Another one that is always fun is to teach your dog to bring something back. This can be a ball, or a stick, or just about anything. Most dogs will do this naturally, so start by throwing something for him to retrieve, and when he brings it back, praise him for it. This should lead to a great game that you can play, and that you can use to train your dog!

If you are a dog owner that is interested in providing healthy and nutritious food for your pet, you have probably run into difficulty. With dog food recalls hitting the headlines with more regularity, you are probably wondering if it is possible to know which commercial dog foods are safe for your dog and which ones are not. An alternative to this dilemma is to note that rather than purchasing dog food from the store, some people are preparing home cooked dog food for their dogs.

A great way to care for your pet is to prepare home cooked dog food. With the right recipes you are able to provide all the required nutrients that are complete and balanced. As you source the ingredients you can be sure of their quality and be sure there are no fillers, artificial coloring or any other questionable ingredients. You can select the proper grade of meat, grains and vegetable for your dog.

For years, dogs were fed almost exclusively from table scraps (which were often not a healthy option) or some other form of homemade dog food. Today, pet owners have become dependent on buying commercial dog food as it seems easier than preparing it. They would probably be very surprised to learn how easy and convenient it is to make your own home cooked dog food with the proper recipes.

Should you decide to prepare home cooked dog food, you may find it convenient to cook for your family and your dog at the same time. Human grade ingredients are used in the preparation of home cooked dog food recipes, so it is not necessary to use different dishes, pans or utensils when cooking for both. To save time, you may find it convenient to prepare batches of food in quantity, then freeze or refrigerate the extra portions.

Since a dog’s nutritional needs can vary depending on breed, you should always talk to your vet before starting to feed your dog a home cooked diet. A vet will not only be able to advise you on your dog’s nutritional needs but may also have vitamins or other nutritional supplements that they recommend be added to your home cooked dog food. Consulting with a vet first is the best way to ensure that the food you’re feeding your dog is the most appropriate and best for them.

One of the best things you can do to safeguard the health, energy and vitality of your dog is to give them food that you’ve prepared for them yourself. Home cooked dog food that is formulated from special recipes provides much better nutritional value than many commercially available foods. And you might be surprised to discover just how easy and convenient it is to keep your dog healthy and happy by preparing food for him. Another issue that you may not have considered is that by making your pets food more digestible there will be less dog poop around the yard too.

You may enjoy cooking for your dog; not only are there are a fair number of home cooked dog food recipes on the market — some people even consider it a hobby! Why not try making some home cooked treats? Your dog will love it and you will love knowing that he is getting fresh and nutritious food.

by Frederick Williams

The likeable and sweet tempered Miniature Schnauzer is often considered a delight to be around. He’s generally friendly and pleasant and makes a good pet for many kinds of households.

General Appearance and Description

It’s believed that the Miniature Schnauzer is a result of a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher, with perhaps a Poodle included in the mix somewhere. He is likely of German descent, because “schnauze” is German for muzzle.

Mini Schnauzers are intelligent and sweet dogs that are loyal and dependable companions.

Miniature Schnauzers are small dogs that have both a bushy beard and mustache. Their eyebrows are also quite prominent. In fact, Schnauzers are often groomed so that their beard and mustache are accentuated.

The coat is long and silky with a slight curl to it. Schnauzers are most commonly salt and pepper colored, but they can also be black, all white, or black and silver with a softer colored undercoat.

Basic Temperament

The Schnauzer is a perky and happy playmate. He’s smart, energetic and obedient. If you think of your pets as like children, the Schnauzer is a good fit for you. He’s much like a child, because he’s playful, alert and happy and always in the game.

The Miniature Schnauzer is truly a very special breed.

If you enjoy traveling, obedience training and bringing a dog into the home that will truly be a companion, the Schnauzer again fits the role.

While he’s a good companion and enjoyable dog to have around, the Schnauzer has one major behavioral challenge. That is his desire to be a big dog. He can be very aggressive toward other dogs and will even challenge bigger dogs to a fight. If you, the master, don’t establish yourself as the leader of the pack, your dog may develop these aggressive tendencies. Socialize him well as a puppy, too, and you likely won’t see any of these troubling characteristics.

Mini Schnauzers can bark often and loudly, but the bark is nothing like a small dog bark and that’s high pitched and yappy sounding. Instead, the Schnauzer has a bark that belies his size. His is low and more intimidating. This can help him when he’s asked to be a watchdog, a role he will happily step into.

Care Required

The Schnauzer’s wiry coat is easy to care for, but it must be combed daily with a wire brush, or the coat will become matted fairly quickly. If your schnauzer does get knots, you can simply clip them out.

As far as grooming, the Schnauzer should be clipped evenly all over. Leave this job for the experts, though you can give him touch ups as needed.

Many people acquire Miniature Schnauzer puppies because they have allergies. This dog isn’t considered hypoallergenic, but sheds very little and is considered an excellent choice for people with allergies.

When looking at learning more about Buy a Miniature Schnauzer, read and learn as much as you can because the because this is a incredible dog breed.

Exercise Requirements

If you live in an apartment, the Miniature Schnauzer will enjoy living in your small space, but he does like to play indoors he will need plenty of toys to keep him happy, busy and out of trouble. He will do fine without a yard in which to run around.

But you must give your energetic Schnauzer a good walk on a daily basis. He will enjoy walking quickly as if you have a mission and will also enjoy any time you can give him off leash to play.

Training

If you buy a Miniature Schnauzer, be prepared to socialize him often, to train him well and to be patient with him. While he’s highly intelligent and takes to training well, he also has a strong will and will require some patience on your part. When trained, however, he can be a joy.

The Schnauzers are usually not difficult to housetrain.

Height and Weight

The adult Miniature Schnauzer will be about 12 to 14 inches tall and weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.

Health and Longevity

Like many small dogs, the Miniature Schnauzer is generally a healthy dog. Some Schnauzers will have some problems, however, ranging from liver disease and kidney stones to skin disorders. They are also at risk of developing von Willebrand’s disease, a common blood disorder in dogs. Some will have eye problems.

More common for your Miniature Schnauzer is the risk of weight gain. Be careful how much you feed him, because even with his high activity level, he can gain weight easily.

Most Schnauzers can live to be about 15 years old.

Suitability

Schnauzers are ideal for many different households. They love children and do well with seniors. They are also excellent dogs to have on the farm as they are experts at killing mice and at hunting, tracking, performing tricks and acting as guard dogs.

A common pet owner annoyance that happens once the warm weather hits is the inevitable flea infestation. For many, it must seem that as soon as you get rid of the last batch, it just starts all over again. Regardless of how recently you were able to get rid of the fleas in your house, it is important not to waste even a single day if you discover fleas again. Once you see a single flea, the quicker you attack them, the easier your flea control will be.

In order to get rid of fleas, you need to remember that getting rid of fleas on your dog is not sufficient; you have to also think of the fleas, flea eggs and larvae that are in your dogs living and play space. This means in your house, on any furniture and areas the dog sleeps on, and in the yard your dog goes out to play in.

The first step is to remove your dog from your house so he is not re-infected as soon as you give him a good flea bath or treatment. Killing the fleas on your dog will involve either a chemical treatment, such as Advantage or Frontline, or a more natural solution such as olive oil baths, garlic treatments or talcum powder. You can follow up the natural treatment with a flea comb. I wouldn’t suggest a flea comb if you’ve used a flea medication, since these can be pretty toxic chemicals. This might be one reason you choose to get rid of dog fleas naturally.

Getting rid of fleas in your house can be difficult. The first step is to wash all bedding that your cat or dog may have come into contact with. Wash everything in hot water and dry it in a tumble dryer if possible. There will be flea larvae in the bedding. The only safe and natural way to kill these is with hot water. Take every mat or area rug outside and don’t bring them back in until they have been thoroughly cleaned.

After washing all of the bedding, you will need to vacuum every where the dog or cat has slept. Be very careful to vacuum everywhere. Remember to remove the vacuum bag after vacuuming and seal it to prevent the fleas from hopping back out. If possible, steam clean your carpets and sofas. While steam cleaning your belongings use the hottest water possible.

Once fleas have moved into your house, regaining a flea free house is a tough job, but it is possible. You need to be very persistent and thorough with cleaning all areas of your house, and ridding your dog of fleas. Once you have gotten rid of all fleas, remember to keep up the cleaning and flea treatment, since you may see a re-infestation if you have missed some of the flea eggs and larvae. If you continue the cleaning cycle periodically after the first cleaning, you will be able to catch any fleas missed the first time around and end the cycle.

In 17th century, the Gypsies and tinkers are well-known to have with them in their travels a dog that’s dependable and amusing. This dog is called a Lurcher and it is not a breed but rather just a type of dog. This dog resulted from the crossbreeding of several sightsounds with Greyhound, Terrier or Collie.

During this century, the Lurcher is most known as a hare, rabbit or other small animals poacher. In fact, its name is derived from the Roman word lur, which means “thief”. Today, however, the Lurcher is best known as a dependable and fun-loving pet.

Usually, a Lurcher is made up of three fourths sighthound but this also varies depending on the way of breeding. The most common combination of the Lurcher, however, are Greyhound/Collie and Greyhound/Terrier. The most favored size and form of the Lurcher today is similar to a Greyhound.

Since there is no set type for the Lurcher, this dog can then grow as little as a Whippet or as big as a Deerhound. This dog’s coat can be like the Greyhound which is short and smooth, longer and thicker like the Collie, or rough and broken like the Terrier. Gypsies, however, are said to have loved the short-haired Lurcher most.

The Lurcher has a smooth undercoat which thickens in the winter season and can be a heavy or light shedder depending on its inherited traits. The legs of this creature are long and straight, and the chest is deep that provides better lung capacity for endurance. There is no set color for this dog because it varies greatly according to the sighthound with which it was crossed.

There is no fixed temperament for the Lurcher too because it also varies depending on breeds used for crossing. Some Lurchers may have temperaments similar to a Greyhound and there are some that have temperaments like that of the herding breeds or terrier breeds. Most Lurchers, however, possess strong hunting instincts that they got mostly from the sighthhounds.

The Lurcher is a dog that loves to have fun, is affectionate to people and loves the attention of the master. It is an amendable dog, fast learner and highly trainable. It loves activities outdoors therefore it will strive well in a family that is active, too.

Being confined in an apartment will not suit the Lurcher because it needs to be outside and be active often. It needs daily walks and running everyday that’s why a house with a wide yard is ideal. This dog will always want to chase and catch small animals and run freely so keep him in a fenced area all the time.

It’s very easy for dog owners with little experience in training dogs to make a number of common mistakes. By preparing yourself better, and by knowing what these common mistakes are, you can avoid a lot of struggle and frustration. The most common mistake dog owners make is expecting results to come too quickly.

Even though dogs are extremely intelligent animals, they can’t learn new tricks and commands overnight. Don’t expect too much from your dog from day one. Dog training takes time and your dog will not be the best behaved dog in the park until you put the time in training.

The 2nd big mistake that a lot of new dog owners make is to lose their temper with their dog. This can happen through yelling, or even through lashing out. Physically hitting dogs is wrong, and yelling at your dog won’t achieve anything. For best results, make a promise to yourself that you won’t lose your temper with your dog.

The 3rd big mistake made by inexperienced dog owners is to allow their dogs to take control, and to in fact be the “leader” of the household. This is a danger to everyone around, and indeed to the dog itself. Make life easier for everyone and cement your place as the Alpha Dog from day one.

Giving up when times get tough is the 4th big mistake that many dog owners tend to make. Don’t give up at the first hurdle as dogs are extremely capable and they love to learn. It’s also very important that dogs are challenged mentally and training is a great way to do this.

The 5th and final common mistake that many dog owners tend to make is to become too inconsistent. Consistency in training is very important so make sure you always use the same commands and are as repetitive as possible.

Now that you know some of the biggest mistakes dog owners make, ensure that you don’t fall into these common traps.

Many pet owners want the best for their animals, in particular the kind of food that they are being fed. They search for healthy foods for their pets put it can often be confusing or impossible to determine the good from the bad. More people are providing home cooked dog food for their pets, rather than use commercial foods, especially after the recent rash of recalled commercial dog food stories in the papers and on television.

Making your pets food yourself is the best way to ensure that your best friend is getting a complete and balanced nourishment. Some dog foods are good, yet some are made with undesirable additives such as dyes, preservatives and fillers. However, if you make home cooked dog food, all it contains is the top quality meat, grains and vegetables you normally buy for your family at the market.

Many people who prepare a pets meals at home do so while cooking for the rest of the family. Since home cooked dog food contains the same ingredients people consume, you dont have to be concerned about which cookware you reserve for this activity. One time-saving and labor-sparing approach is to prepare the food in large quantities, some of which can be refrigerated or frozen for use at a later date.

Preparing food for your dog requires more than just cooking and putting it into a bowl. You should consult with your vet to be sure the animal is getting the proper dietary and nutritional needs for its size and breed. The vet may also be able to guide you as to which vitamins or supplements to add to your home cooked dog food.

It makes sense to start cooking home made dog food. If you follow formulated recipes you can provide well balanced meals for your pet. You will know the quality of the ingredients that go into the food (which is often impossible with commercial foods). Your pet will be happier and healthier with more vitality. Once you get into the routine, you will find it is actually not a big hassle on your time or finances for a noticeable improvement of your dog’s energy level.

Its amazing how many recipes there are out there for someone who wants to prepare a pet’s meals at home. It can be an enjoyable activity as well as a health-giving one. There are even recipes for little doggie snacks. These are sure to please your furry friend, but theyll also please you because youll know your dog is getting top quality ingredients in home cooked dog food.

Keeping your dog looking nice is an essential part of caring for him. But many dog owners wrongly assume that dog grooming is an option, not a necessity.

It’s more than just a dog wash, experts will tell you. While brushing your dog is important, and counts for some grooming, the reality is that your dog needs professional dog grooming.

Why is Dog Grooming Important?

Professional dog groomers can bring an expertise to the job that no matter how hard you try you just can’t. They have access to dog grooming equipment that you might not, and they have experience and perhaps even training that gives them essential skills in keeping your dog’s fur healthy and attractive.

In addition, they often can provide your dog with a true grooming experience that goes beyond what most of us can do in our backyards or bathrooms.

Good dog groomers can ensure that your dog is clean, and that his fur is in good condition. But because a dog groomer will likely spend more time caring for your dog’s fur than you might, he or she might also see skin conditions that need care, or other conditions that need attention.

Beyond that, dog groomers have equipment you don’t have at home, including special dog wash treatments and the know-how to use them. They might also use dog clippers that are of higher quality than those you might buy for home use.

How to Find a Dog Grooming Service

Dog groomers can be found in a variety of places. Here are some ideas:

* Ask at the vet’s office for a recommendation; sometimes a good quality dog grooming service is available on site at the vet’s. * Purchase an ebook, DVD or CD and learn do do at least part of the grooming yourself (will save you some money and helps build your relationship with your dog) * Head to the local pet store and ask about their offerings; dog groomers can often rent a space at a pet store and provide a grooming service while the dog’s owners shop. * Look for independent dog wash facilities; sometimes these are located in suburban neighborhoods. You might help with the wash, or the dog groomer might do all the work.

You can just drop your dog off at any groomer’s facility, but you might want to ask a few questions of the groomer first. These can include:

* Has the groomer taken any dog grooming courses? This can assure you of a high quality dog wash and grooming session. * If the dog groomer took dog grooming courses, did they include a discussion of how to look for skin conditions and what to do about them? * Does the groomer provide puppy grooming? If you have a young dog this can be a relevant question since a puppy’s grooming needs can be different than an adult dog’s.

Grooming Your Dog at Home

If you need to save money or you just don’t want to take your dog to a dog grooming service, you might think that you can replicate a professional dog grooming session at home.

It’s a little hard to do in the beginning, but you can give your dog a good grooming session at home. Here are some ideas:

* Purchase an ebook, DVD or CD and learn do do at least part of the grooming yourself (will save you some money and helps build your relationship with your dog)

* First, make sure you have the proper equipment. This goes beyond a good dog brush, though that is important. Also have on hand high-quality dog shampoo (not the shampoo out of your own shower) and flea dip medication if that’s needed. Also have fresh clean towels and dog clippers.

* Be patient with your dog. Many don’t enjoy baths or being brushed and groomed. One advantage of taking your dog to a dog grooming facility is the dog can be leashed to the table, which makes the job much easier.

* Groom your dog on a regular basis. How often he needs grooming is dictated by his breed, but read up on the breed’s grooming needs and try to keep within that schedule. Otherwise, his fur could get out of hand and you’ll have no choice but to take him to a dog grooming service.

Your dog’s grooming needs generally aren’t excessive unless they are a high-maintenance breed. Be willing to do what’s necessary to keep him groomed, whether that is using a professional dog grooming service, or giving him a groom at home.

The Australia-developed Silky Terrier is a small dog that is gaining high acclaim among dog lovers around the world. Silky Terrier is what the Americans call it. The Australians and the rest of the world, however, prefer to call it Australian Silky Terrier or Sidney Terrier.

This tiny breed of the Land Down Under is highly regarded for being loving, smart, courageous and vigilant. Do not be misguided into thinking, however, that this little breed is merely a lapdog. This breed is too energetic to become one and will in fact make a rather good watchdog.

As an interesting hobby, the Silky loves to dig dirt. It is also very enthusiastic, very curious and intensely loves learning new things. This dog can get happy by merely romping around and running indoors or in a small yard.

When it comes to training, this dog does not like to beat around the bush as it wants the training straightforward. It is highly biddable, quick and very eager to learn making each training a fast one and interesting. This dog can happily strive in an apartment living because it can satisfyingly get active indoors with only a few minutes of daily walks around the neighborhood.

Silky Terriers’ bodies are well-structured, fairly low to the ground and stands only 9 to 10 inches. Their ears are interestingly erect and v-shaped and generally, most Silky Terriers have docked tails. They are also notable for their black nose and piercing round dark eyes.

Their bodies are draped with 5 to 6 inches of fine, shiny and smooth long hair. The hair is center-parted at the back, draping down but does not reach the floor and they have no undercoat and sheds very little. They often come in colors of blue and fire red, or blue with tan patterns; and that all Silky Terries are born black.

To keep the Silky’s hair at its best, regular grooming is needed such as daily brushing or combing and regular baths. Its coat should also be trimmed regularly in order to keep it healthy and neat. Most Silky Terriers have hair on top of their heads that covers the eyes so it is best to tie this in a topknot.

The development of the Silky Terrier was contributed by some other terrier breeds and these are believed to be the Skye, Cairn, Yorkshire and Australian terriers. It was the American servicemen, who were stationed in Australia during WWII, who brought the Silky Terrier to the United States. In 1959, this breed became an official member of the American Kennel Club and in 1962, its first breed standard had been created.

Once known as a gladiator in the bull baiting pit, the Standard Bull Terrier has come a long way and is now being enjoyed as a family pet. After the bull baiting was banned, breeders found a way to somehow lessen the aggressiveness of this breed and this quest was successful. Down the line, however, breeders came up with the idea of having the same Bull Terrier only smaller in size thus the Miniature Bull Terrier came to be.

Like the standard Bull Terrier, this miniature dog also possesses a head that everyone describes as the “egg shape”. Its eyes are triangular and closely set, and the tail is also carried horizontally. When it comes to the body, just like its bigger counterpart, this mini dog is also robust, lean and muscular.

Its body is wrapped with a skin-tight short, course and glossy coat. Usually, this breed comes out in colors of either full white, white with markings of other colors, or fully colored. The coat colors may include white, black, red, fawn, brindle and tri-color while any shade of blue or liver is considered a disqualification.

The Mini Bull Terrier is loving especially towards humans and fearless and vicious in defending them. However, just as expected of a terrier, it can also be stubborn at times and too energetic for small children to handle. A properly trained Mini Bull Terrier can restrain from being too active around children and at the same time, children must be informed on how to treat the little breed as well.

This breed is every inch a warrior when it comes to fighting because even at times that the opponent is a much larger breed, it doesn’t back down and fights as long as circumstances allow. This dog is also very loyal and in fact will defend the master against harm. On peaceful moments, however, the Mini Bull Terrier is playful, overly active and sociable towards humans.

The Mini Bull Terrier will suit just fine in an apartment kind of living because it is not that active indoors. The most important thing to do, however, is to provide this dog plenty of exercises everyday. Grooming for this dog only requires once a week combing or brushing because its short hair cleans easily.

You can set things up in a controlled way so you can use sound for training purposes. This lets you get the exact result you want.

We are going to carry out a 4 step process. Part of this will be to use different locations each time and to use some pros to help. Along the way, we will be trying to get inside our dogs mind to understand his thinking better.

A good dog owner, already knows that dogs think and communicate, but not at all like humans. So it is up to us to make the effort if we want good results.

You have to be consistent so as not to confuse. Using conditioned reflex, you will be able to effectively change any behaviour you choose.

Using a set of cans, or any other source of sound, so long as it is brief, and so long as it can be presented from different directions on each consecutive instance, are all that you need to do to break any behavior. Simply create the sound, and follow through with praise! It’s that simple. Any behavior can be stopped or broken, simply by creating a sound, and praising immediately. The secret is, to allow the undesired behavior to begin again, and simply present the sound from another direction, and follow through with praise. Of course you have to understand how your dog thinks and learns in order to successfully achieve this.

Every time we create a sound this way, we praise him until he stops the behavior. You have to be ready to start the sound again when the behavior starts. You have to get past the point where you say to yourself “why should i praise him ?” but it works. As we said before you have to stop thinking like a human.

The value of this training method is that you can use it now and forever, for anything that you want him to do. It is so effective, that should he not perform as you expect, then he is most likely rebelling against your authority.

You will soon come to enjoy this process because it really works well and you can take satisfaction from knowing how to change behavior. Do bear in mind that this is changing existing behavior, not teaching new behavior.

Its true, anyone can train their dogs. Anyone. People who have said otherwise are probably using wrong techniques, are not consistent, or maybe have almost succeeded if they didn’t give up just yet. Dog training tests your patience and perseverance but it’s not without it’s sweet rewards. You will have a richer and happier relationship with your dog while enjoying a clean home and active social life.

Let’s start by looking into what goes on inside the mind of your dog so we can better grasp the reasons behind the given dog training tips. People are logical and intelligent creatures (most of us anyway). We can correctly assume the outcome of any given situation through reasoning skills and basic common sense. Dogs on the other hand, are lovable but not as smart. They understand only through simple reactions and a consistent repetition of unchanging commands. For instance, we understand that ‘Come!’, ‘Let’s go!’, or ‘Come here!’ mean the same thing. But with dogs, all three phrases are as different as different can be. He might go to you after the millionth time of calling him but that doesn’t mean he understands what you’re trying to say.

Be consistent in teaching your dog. Use the exact same phrase in whatever command you have been trying to teach. This applies to every aspect of his training.

The core of a healthy man-canine relationship is the understanding of your position as the dog’s undisputed master and leader. Mind you, this doesn’t mean to treat the dog in a violent and harsh manner. Being firm and strong every time is enough to cement your leader status over him. If your pet understands this, he will strive to do things that will please you like be on his best behavior and obey your commands.

Rubbing his belly is a tactic to enforce your leadership. It subtly teaches him submission and by licking your hand he acknowledges you as his authority. Do not in any way give in to his growling and whining just to settle any matter. Establish good habits and do not stray from it.

Another trick experts use in training animals is to let the dog teach himself. For example, your dog is gnawing on things not meant for dog’s teeth. Pet owners will reprimand the dog right away and take the thing away. This isn’t wrong but a better method is to replace incorrect behavior with the right one by planting unpleasant sensations and memories from the wrong behavior.

If he gnaws on one of your pairs of shoe, spray him with water. If he does it again, spray him yet again. Place his own toy strategically before him to pick up. If he catches on and starts playing with the toy enthusiastically praise him. In the dog’s uncomplicated mind, chewing the shoe feels bad and playing with the toy feels good.

Do not forget to bring him up properly with socialization. It is an often overlooked but very important aspect of dog training. Establishing social skills is best during the first three months of the puppy’s life. However, adult dogs needs and would benefit from regular interaction with people and other animals. Make socialization an integral part of his life by introducing your pet to vaccinated dogs, different kinds of people and crowded places whenever you can.

As any parent would know, you discipline that which you love and care for. The dog training tips as outlined above will greatly help your dogs become the happier, best version of themselves. Nobody said it would be easy, but it will always be worth it.

by Geraldine Dimarco

Have you ever read about crate training dogs? It sounds like an inhumane act to dogs who don’t do as they’re told. Surprisingly, it’s actually the contrary. Crate training is a good method of training based on the dogs’ natural need for security.

It is said that wolves are the dogs’ ancestors of old. This may or may not be factual but it still stands true that dogs are animals who lived in the open spaces before we adopted them into our homes. In the wild where there are dangers and perils at every turn- these dogs found caves and dens as a shelter and nesting area. This is the foundation of training dogs to use their crates in stressful and overly busy environments

Many who use crate training can attest to its stress relieving effects for the canine. This also helps in house training the dogs by keeping them in check within a limited area. This will protect the animals from harming themselves, other people and things around the house. Going to the vet or travelling for long distances will not anymore be a problem with a crate trained dog safely tucked in his enclosed space.

Not all dogs can be crate trained. There are pets who have experienced severe trauma in the past with confined boxes. They will be difficult to calm down, thus making this method of training virtually useless. Some of the larger dogs panic when the door closes in and they break the crate altogether. And many owners are just uneasy with having living animals stuck in such an enclosed space.

Crate training dogs is really dependent on how the owner feels about it. If you hate thinking of your dog in such a confined space then its best to forgo this. However, if you think you and your dog can benefit from a little discipline and space crate training will afford you, then read on to see how to accomplish this the best possible way.

Look for a good site to place the crate in. It has to be in a room where people will be in like the living area or the bedroom. Purchase a good sized crate and put the dog’s favorite play things inside. As the dog makes its way in the crate, do not immediately shut the door. Stroke him and speak to him reassuringly for a few days. Feed him while he is in the box. When all seems alright, start closing the door for several minutes. Make sure you are still in the room wehere he can see and hear you. If the dog cries and gets upset, wait for him to settle down before opening the door. Do not rush the process. It is a little scary for the pet so you need to be patient in introducing the concept to him.

For crate training to be successful, never use it as a form of punishment to the dog. This should be a place he seeks out to be safe and calm. If the dog is finally accustomed to being alone in the crate, you can try leaving the house in short intervals and see how he reacts to this. If there is no trouble, then you have a crate trained dog in your hands. Now you have freedom from constantly being anxious of your pet’s situation. More than that, your dog has found a haven of peace and security he can go to to escape from all of life’s stress and busyness.

GPS have been around for quite a while for finding our whereabouts on this planet. The science behind this method enables us determine the location of a person, animal or any other objects on this planet continually.

The first part consists of the satellites that are placed in orbits of Earth. The second component is the bunch of monitoring stations built on Earth to control the system. The third are the GPS System receivers obtained by the customers. The GPS receiver identifies its position by accepting the signals transmitted by the satellites placed in space.

So basically a GPS tracker for dogs works utilizing the precise navigational signals of satellites. This means it transmits signals via a transmitter which you make your dog wear. The most primary technique is the collar attachment. The GPS tracking device for dogs usually comes built - in with dog-collars. It also comes as harness attachments when it’s not possible to use a collar.

The device allows pet owners to monitor their pet’s wanderings and other activities over their cell phones, internet or customer service of the collar manufacturing company. What’s good about GPS tracking device is that it lets you track your missing pet with the help of a hand held monitor that shows actual movements of your dog in real time. In case you are trying to locate a missing pet through the company’s network service, you are notified through text message alerts on your cell phone, email or other form of communication pre-arranged by you.

Another latest utility of GPS is surfacing as dog collar tracking device. As the name suggests it’s a GPS-enabled collar for your pets. Its use and demand in the market is continuously growing as people these days are becoming increasingly caring and concerned about their pets’ wellbeing.

GPS tracking systems run on batteries, and they allow you to set an alert beep when its time to change them. They are available with various signal strengths as per your tracking need. GPS Tracking System for dogs come in various sizes, but is usually suitable for bigger dogs. They are usually light to enable easy movement of your pet. In case of smaller dogs and cats, the models widely available are somewhat bigger and therefore hinder ease of movement.

While pet lovers are very excited with this latest technological assistance in their lives to be able to take better care of their pets and their safety, there are still a few things that you might want to know before going for a purchase. A GPS, though highly efficient and most advanced, is not the only gadget available to keep track of your pets. There are others like radio tracking collars and microchips that are available in the market, and at a reasonably fair price than GPS tracker.

Since it’s a new technology and only a select niche of customers are going for it, the cost of a GPS dog tracking system could be slightly more than the other options available for pet tracking. However, given the accuracy and ease-of-use that a user gets with it, a GPS dog tracking system surely looks a better idea for pet lovers.

Are you sick and tired of waking up to find another good pair of shoes all chewed out? Do you hate having people over because you just know theyll get slobbered all over, or worse? Are the water puddles and poop mounds around the house finally getting to your nerves? If you are, then its time to get some dog training in your house.

People who want to take personal charge of their pet’s training but either don’t know how or have no time have come to rely on the services of in home dog training companies. Certified trainers are dispatched to do what needs to be done and the dog owners can sit back and watch their canines progress inthe comfort and privacy of their homes. Before you decide to engage in hiring the dog trainer, here are five important questions you need to ask.

What level of obedience does your canine qualify for? If he already has a modicum of dog manners, this means you already have had some success in dog training and you may want to consider following it up yourself. However, if you correctly asses yourself incapable of teaching your pet anything, then have the professional over as soon as possible.

Where are all the good trainers? The best trainers are those whose work speak for itself. Talk to your friends and neighbors who have used a professional’s services in training their pet. If they don’t know anybody, they should know somebody who comes highly recommended. Check the yellow pages or surf through the internet for companies or individuals that offer the training your dog needs (basic obedience training or specific behavior modification). Research on their rates and find one that gives you the best value for your money.

What are the qualities of a good trainer? The most important of all is his manner of teaching and handling the dog. There should be no kicking, yelling, rough handling at all in his part. You are putting your pet in his hands so it is your right to ask for records and referrals he should have which you can check for yourself. While no official government licenses are available for animal training are available; veterinary/animal schools give certification to graduates who have taken the necessary courses to be professional trainers. The International Association of Canine Professional offer CDT and CDTA certification, if your trainer has this then chances are he is well equipped to teach canines.

Which is better: individual or group classes? One-on-one sessions will ensure that your pet gets all the attention and teaching concentrated on him. It will probably help him learn faster. Group classes on the other hand, will help the dog further develop social skills with others of his own kind. If the trainer is good, he will be able to customize his teaching to each students learning curve. It will also be better economically for more people to pitch in and share the expense of their dogs education. If you prefer group classes, form one with pet owners you know who take good care of their pets. With all the rough housing thats bound to happen, you wouldnt want your own infected with fleas or other kinds of infection.

When should training begin? Right away! Ideally, training puppies should begin as early as 8 weeks old. However, you can always teach an old dog new tricks. If you are prepared, your dog is in attendance, and you have a competent trainer, then sky’s the limit! Through in home dog training, you can have a trained dog the safe and convinient way.

by Jim Navary

“When is a puppy fully grown?”

That question is probably not foremost in your mind when you bring a new puppy into your world. That adorable little face, those big soulful eyes, and that wonderful wiggle when he walks are more likely to come to mind when thinking about your new pup. But gradually, as your puppy grows and becomes a bit destructive, you may find yourself wishing that he would grow out of some of those youthful traits and begin acting more like an adult dog. By the time he’s destroyed your third pair of shoes you will probably begin to wonder…

“When will my puppy be fully grown?”

Although there are some similarities between early development stages of canine babies and human babies, the development process is much quicker for dogs.

Newborn puppies go through many changes during their first three weeks . They open their eyes, start to walk, and begin to act like a little dog. During this early stage they are not aware of much of the world beyond “mom” and their siblings.

Somewhere between the third and fourth week of your puppy’s life, his senses of sight, smell, and hearing develop quickly. Suddenly, you will see that he has discovered that there is much more to the world than just his canine family. His relationship with his new human family will begin to take shape. This is a critical period in the development of your puppy’s personality and behavior. As much as possible, try to avoid stressful or traumatic experiences as they may have a major impact on how your dog will behave as he approaches adulthood.

Your puppy will begin learning proper pack “etiquette” during the fifth through seventh weeks. If he begins to bite too hard or play too rough, his canine “mom” will correct him. These early lessons allow him to develop some of the social skills he will put to use as he interacts with humans and other dogs.

During the first three months of his life your puppy will experience many new things. Whenever possible, try to make these learning experiences positive. In doing so you are much less likely to encounter behavioral problems as he approaches adulthood.

After three months or so your puppy enters a “toddler” stage of development. He gains more independence and tries to explore his world as he sees fit, not at the prompting of his mother or his human family. Shoes, furniture, books, and just about anything within reach will fascinate him. He will also learn what they taste like as he begins teething. This is a good time to begin very basic obedience training and establish your role as pack leader.

Your puppy reaches adolescence at around six to eight months, on his way to adulthood. Although the transition from adolescent to adult varies, depending upon the breed (or mix of breeds), you can be pretty sure that he has reached adulthood by the time his second birthday rolls around.

That’s when a puppy is fully grown.

GPS (Global Positioning System) is the only Global Navigation Satellite System that is completely functional right now. GPS is an invention of United States Department of Defense and 50th Space Wing, United States Air Force manages it. GPS became fully operational, for the first time ever, on the 27th of April in 1995 and ever since its inception it’s become the most extensively used technology feature for surveying, map-making, tracking and commerce. Today, it is most commonly used as a navigation tool around the world with its latest use coming up as a pet tracking system.

There are three core building blocks of GPS: the satellites that orbit the Earth; monitoring and control units on Earth; and the GPS receivers possessed by users. A GPS receiver calculates its position by picking up signals broadcasted by satellites from space.

The position of the GPS receiver is computed with the help of satellites in space, which transmit nonstop signals and messages to GPS receivers to obtain perfect orbital data and the time the data was delivered. After receiving the message from satellites, GPS receivers use geometrical computations to unite the position of the satellite with the distance to establish the position of the user.

GPS handsets are nowadays readily available for individual purchase through commercial retailers. Once with geared with such GPS receivers, a user can accurately track or be tracked. It is of great help for navigational purposes while driving long distance, flying or in the sea.

Recently, the GPS System is being used as a dog collar tracking tool. You can also take this advantage of GPS-enabled collar for your dog. It has become immensely popular with the general public as they are more seriously concerned about their pets and safety of the animals.

However, there is a flipside to using GPS tracker. Being external devices attached to dog-collars, they can be removed or can get lost. For example, in your absence, if your dog comes in contact with a known person, but who harbors bad intention, then your pet’s safety is at stake.

Sea travelers don’t need to search further for the best sea trip companion. The Schipperke is the perfect mate because it is incredibly developed to have a low center of gravity, meaning it is not prone to sea sickness. On board, this dog is game about anything because it stays agile, brave and dependable.

The Schipperke is a small breed of dog that originally appeared in Belgium during the early 16th century. This dog has a thickset and compact body and a fox-like face. The only acceptable color for this breed is black and that other shades lighter than it are considered disqualifications.

Aside from being fox-like and all black, there are also other unique features noticeable of a Schipperke. One of the most distinct features would probably be the coat that stands as a ruff, cape and culottes of the dog. The ruff is a remarkable adornment around a Schipperke’s neck as it wounds around, down to the expanse of its back.

The ears are small, erect and pointed and the tail is docked. Some Schipperkes are born tail-less while some are born with varying lengths of tail. A few months after birth, the tails are docked but in the US and Canada, the tails are docked right after birth.

This dog is a moderate shedder, has a luscious and fluffy undercoat, and a coarse and long topcoat. The topcoat is always black while the undercoat may be slightly lighter. Grooming this dog requires weekly brushing and regular trimming.

Also called the “Tasmanian Black Devil” or the “little black devil”, the Schipperke is one headstrong, independent and hardheaded little creature. It is overflowing with energy, very inquisitive and when it is hit with boredom, it destroys things it finds interesting. Sometimes, when the master gives orders, it intentionally ignores or refuses the must to obey.

The word schipperke was used by the English to mean “little sailor”. Recent studies showed, however, that this word was borrowed from the Dutch word “schapocke” or “scheperke” which means “little shepherd”. Moreover, the Belgian Sheepdog or the Groenendael holds a strict resemblance with the Schipperke.

The English regarded the Schipperke as a Dutch barge dog since it is often seen in barges in the canals usually patrolling, hunting vermin and towing horses. The US still calls this breed Belgian Barge Dog or the Belgian Ship Dog. During WWII, the Belgian Resistance used this breed as messengers against the Nazi and went undetected for years.

I was drenched with sweat on a hot July Mississippi morning around ‘97 while I neatly wrapped my rescue dog Thor my shadow and companion was wrapped neatly in a sheet. I had just started my very first online offbeat cartoons and funny gifts venture, and stopped immediately my daily creative routine. Thor was about twelve years old but was staring at the walls and not responding to my voice. He had been very active up until then. I got him to the veterinarian within ten minutes and the diagnosis was some rare ailment that dogs that age often get similar to seizures and he must be put down. I had been a dog lover and owner since age four. My intuition made me skeptical of the veterinarians conclusion instead I decided to keep Thor comfortable for a few days at home. Once Thor was resting I urgently began searching the Internet for alternative solutions and discovered an Australian veterinarian with some unique ideas.

Dr. Ian Billinghurst was not easy to find. He is an Australian holistic/but also also practices traditional western medicine and surgery. He had just penned the controversial book titled Give Your Dog A Bone. It entailed a diet plan that was basically raw foods, bought at the grocery preferably organic. The special recipe contained lots of raw meaty bones and occasionally a blend of vegetables, raw burger, etc. in a blender. I discovered that raw organic tripe is one of the most perfect foods for domestic animals. The first time I fed Thor a raw chicken wing, I was mortified. I had heard all my life this was the surest way to kill a dog, but I was desperate. I could already see and feel his soul energy fading. Thor surprisingly took to this new diet, after not eating at all or drinking very much water for several days, and even then only by dropper. I switched his water to bottled spring and ordered herb tinctures and live flash-glanced vitamins with live minerals as well. He was devouring these raw foods, from hamburger to raw chicken to carrots to pears to romaine lettuce (and a blend of them all).

It took time but I could see a “life energy” returning to my four-legged best friend. The only issue regardint this new raw diet was the terrible odor and coloration of his stools and urine for the first month. Dr. Billinghurst warned me that would happen. The toxins of commercial pet food were leaving his system. One morning, about a month after beginning Thor on the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), Thor jumped on my bed, something he had never done prior to the diet. He was wagging his tail and ready to go out and play. He didn’t want a short walk but was willing to go with me my usual five miles. He kept up with me without even panting or having a shortness of breath. The vet had also advised me that in addition to the mystery disease, Thor also suffered from level two heart diseases. I started giving him the same herbs I was taking for my congestive heart failure. I ceased giving him all vaccines as advised and bought homeopathic nosodes which I ordered on the net from a pet product company. His daily diet also consisted of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (and occasionally yogurt mixed in a blender. He loved it all and devoured every meal like a wolf in a hen house, whereas in the days of feeding him commercial dog food, even the best, he generally ignored but ate bits during the day when hungry, never finishing even half a bowl.

According to Dr. Billinghurst and now other experts on the subject of B.A.R.F., dogs digestive systems have not evolved very much from their earlier days, before domestication, when they were still wolves, just as cat’s systems had not since they were lions. Thor’s energy level kept growing and growing as did his wanting to be near me and play at every given chance, whereas he used to mostly lay around and sleep during his pre-barf days. Until about age 20, he continued to anticipate our long walks, often up to five miles. It was only when he was about twenty one, that his phase two heart disease changed to phase four, and I knew that was dangerous. It was only then, almost a decade since his last vet visit, except for checkups, that I was forced to also use allopathic medicines, such as Lasix for his heart. I did so very hesitantly, as I was aware this type medicine would eventually hurt his liver and kidneys, which of course it did. In his final year, he had several near-death experiences in which I rushed him to the vet. I was already resolved that if he were in any kind of discomfort, or his quality of life was compromised, I would sadly have my best friend put down. The vet insisted he would not put him down. After all Thor had made three major comebacks at age twenty-two which he considered nothing less than a miracle. After a final try of a body flush, I could tell he was almost gone. I asked the vet what to do. He said to take him home, there was still a chance. I knew there was not. I could see his life and soul fading from his eyes. I knew him too well. He had been by my side, by my desk at home where I work, for a decade. I said I would take him home but I ordered a bottle of morphine which I administered around the clock as I slept on the floor cradling him during his final night. I had to put the morphine pill down his throat and set my alarm clock for every three hours so as to wake up and give him another. On the 6 am alarm, I opened the bottle to give Thor his pill, but his soul had left his furry body. I looked down and saw there was no breathing. Any pain he may have experienced was now gone, but tears flooded from my eyes. I looked at his face carefully and he was still smiling. He always had a smile through life, and now it stayed with him in death. I had never seen a dog smile like that. It was one of such happiness and contentment.

The weather conditions were bad. Heavy snow and sleet semed to push me down, and it was hard to carry his almost 40 pound body up the hill. He had a favorite hill behind our home where he chased birds, squirrels, eagles, chipmunks, rabbits and every animal imaginable. I built a small casket for him and a headstone. I had a shovel in the other hand. I lay him down in the casket, and begin digging, first through the snow and ice and finally through the hard dirt until the hole was about four feet deep. I lay him in it, said a prayer, and filled it cold and shivering and still crying. I carefully placed the coffin in the ground and filled it up. I placed the headstone. It’s epitaph read, “To Thor: A Special Dog Who Brought Only Joy & Happiness To All. We love you forever and will never forget you.”

A year and a half has passed since Thor’s death. The grieving process took longer and was more intense than I had calculated lasting nearly six months. Friends were suggesting I go immediately to the shelter and adopt another. I could not do it then but now I know I will one day. It is after all what Thor would have wanted. I can only thank God, and thank Dr. Ian Billinghurst the Father of The Raw Food Diet, and Shirleys Wellness Cafe, for giving Thor and I another beautiful ten years together. Although one veterinarian had decided it was time to put Thor down, it was, in reality, time for Thor to begin living. Thanks to the B.A.R.F. diet, Thor lived a long and healthy life.
