Dogs Against Romney Social Media Activism Reached 40 Million People

The numbers are still being calculated, but it is now safe to say that, between January and November, 2012, Dogs Against Romney reached at least 40 million Americans with our message. This estimate is a combination of social sharing by our members, and mainstream media coverage we received.

Highlights:

- In our top week on Facebook, we reached 1.25 million through social sharing
- In each of the last 8 weeks of the election, we reached at least 900,000
- In one night (the night we hijacked Romney's Diane Sawyer interview) we reached 9 million

Truthfully, the number is much larger, and incalculable. For example, the social sharing number includes only those from our page. It does not include exposure we received when our members' friends re-shared (and re-shared, and re-shared) our content. It does not include exposure we received when other activists shared our content with their own supporters, nor does it include the re-shares that followed it. The mainstream media numbers do not include exposure we received when their viewers and readers shared and re-shared the stories in their own social networks. Nor do the media numbers include the exposure we received in other countries (we were written about by mainstream press in Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Australia).

How social media helped elect Obama and defeat Romney

From Examiner.com: How powerful can social media activism be? One such effort (Dogs Against Romney) attracted over 110,000 members on Facebook and Twitter. These members, in turn, were connected to over 25 Million friends and followers. Through sharing by the group's members, the activist's message reached at least 900,000 people per week in the final two months of the election. There were even larger groups created by other social media activists that reached far more.

What's Next for Dogs Against Romney?

From January to November of this year, this blog received 1,299,620 visitors. Combined with the roughly 1 million visitors the original Dogs Against Romney blog received in 2007, we've safely accumulated over 2 million total visits since the news first broke about the way Mitt Romney treated his poor dog, Seamus.

By the way, Dogs Against Romney was not about electing President Obama (although it became that by default when Romney won the Republican nomination). DAR was started while Obama and Hillary Clinton were still slugging it out in the 2007 Democratic primary. Disclosure: I am a modestly left-of-center independent and I personally supported President Obama's reelection. However, we worked hard to stop Romney from even getting the GOP nomination and - had we been successful - I'd have shut DAR down then and there and gone happily back to my regular job and daily activities.

It didn't work out that way, though. Instead, we got a long fight that provided us with an incredible social media laboratory in which we learned a lot and gained a tremendous amount of very valuable experience (I suppose that is one thing I can thank Mitt Romney for).

Unlike 2007, DAR 2012 included a very robust social media component. Twitter was good, but Facebook by far became the star. We developed a very engaged Facebook following that eagerly shared our content. By Election Day, the DAR Facebook page sported over 106,000 members. I am still calculating the final numbers, but I can tell you that in the last week of the election alone, our Facebook content reached over 1.25 million people through viral sharing by our members. The final numbers will be nothing short of astounding.

So what's next? This has been a 5-year labor of love that often took time away from family, friends and my regular job (social media and online/interactive marketing consultant).Thankfully, as I mentioned above, an incredible amount of what we experienced and learned over the course of the election can be put to good use helping to bring about positive, forward change in the future (it is never too early to begin positioning for success in the next mid-term election).

BREAKING: Judge Says Mitt Romney "Probably" Guilty of Animal Abuse

A judge in an Oregon courtroom Friday made it clear he believes Mitt Romney “probably” would have been found guilty of animal abuse for strapping his crated dog to the roof of a car for a 12-hour trip. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Kenneth Walker made the statement in open court during the trial of two Oregon men charged with second-degree animal abuse.

As reported in The Oregonian, the two men were arrested after accidentally dragging their dog behind a truck. The question put before the court was this: Is it a crime to tie a dog to a car, forget about it, then drive off?

While arguing in her clients’ defense, attorney Lisa Pardini said to Judge Walker that even people in prominent positions of power sometimes make bad decisions, using Mitt Romney as an example.

"Our presidential candidate tied up a dog and drove off with him for quite a while," Pardini said.

To that, Judge Walker said: "I would have probably found him guilty for that."

Ultimately, Judge Walker agreed with the defense, finding the two men were “negligent” but not guilty of animal abuse. The dog survived the incident.

Romney's Dog-on-Roof Story as Enacted Parable

We like to have some fun here at Dogs Against Romney, but the truth is our message is serious. Mitt Romney strapped his family pet to the roof of his car for a 12-hour drive. He admits it. He continues to defend it.

Over 95,000 members of our Facebook “Super Pack” - and hundreds of thousands of readers of this blog - believe it was an act of animal abuse. Just a few days ago, a poll conducted by Public Policy Polling showed that the overwhelming majority of Americans (68%) agree.

But to me, this story is about more than just Romney’s inhumane treatment of his family pet. It is also about what this inhumane act says about Romney’s character – and what it might mean for citizens living under a Romney administration.

Yesterday, as I read through my large backlog of articles, I came across a diary on Daily Kos by “Wee Mama." It was written months ago - long before it became known how Romney feels about the 47% of Americans he considers "un-willing to take responsibility for their lives" - and it just ... nails it.

Wee Mama considers the dog-on-roof incident an “enacted parable,” a story told through actions, rather than words, possibly illustrative of Romney’s view of others (humans and canines alike). She explains it eloquently:

A brief recap of the story brings out how many, many points of contact there are between this short, sad story of Seamus and how Romney has treated thousands of people (and by extension, would treat the American public).
Seamus was one of "the least of these"; he was a family member but one without any power of his own. Romney included him when it was useful and convenient, but had no concern for the experience from Seamus's point of view. The parallel is to the many employees of companies that Romney bought out who were fired. They were useful fodder but disposable at Romney's convenience.The roof top carrier kept Seamus out of the way; Romney didn't need to face or endure what Seamus suffered for those twelve hours. Similarly Romney has never had to experience what the employees in the raided companies endured.Seamus's diarrhea was a wholly natural response to an intolerable situation. Romney did not pay attention to Seamus, though, only to the impact Seamus had on the car. Romney hosed the car and Seamus down, and rolled on down the highway. In the companies that Bain Capital raided, employees suffered the loss of pensions and health care, but that was irrelevant to Romney and the vulture capitalists; they went ahead with their profit taking.The hardest part of this story is that Romney told it as a light hearted family anecdote. He continues to have no shame about it, and to claim that Seamus preferred twelve hours in the slipstream over time inside with the family.If the Seamus story had been a one off mistake, regretted and apologized for, it would have ended. It gains its force from the many parallels to the way that Romney has treated "the least of these" in the companies that Bain Capital has raided. It should legitimately be taken as a warning for how Romney would treat the American people if (God forbid) he were President.

Indeed. Wee Mama "gets it."
