"The past week has seen plenty of ink spilled — virtual and otherwise — about WikiLeaks and its mercurial front-man, Julian Assange, and the pressure they have come under from the U.S. government and companies such as Amazon and PayPal, both of which have blocked WikiLeaks from using their services. Why should we care about any of this? Because more than anything else, WikiLeaks is a publisher — a new kind of publisher, but a publisher nonetheless — and that makes this a freedom of the press issue. Like it or not, WikiLeaks is fundamentally a journalistic entity, and as such it deserves our protection."

<img alt="" class="zemanta-pixie-img" src="http://img.zemanta.com/pixy.gif?x-id=11959607-82af-4fb8-8275-a7c88309c1b7" style="border: none; But the tiny room with its stall shower would soon become center stage in a family's determined effort to care for a failing loved one at home." And “secret” because no one has spoken publicly about it.

Terry Pratchett's Alzheimer's Speech
My name is Terry Pratchett, author of a series of inexplicably successful fantasy books and I have had Alzheimer's now for the past two years plus, in which time I managed to write a couple of bestsellers.

I have a rare variant. I don't understand very much about it, but apparently if you are going to have Alzheimer's it's a good one to have. More about Terry Pratchett:

In August 1994, at the age of 83, Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He informed the United States reading a hand-written letter, in part in part he said,

“I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease... At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done... I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you."

The man in the ball cap and blue shirt is my Dad.

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out

I am getting a feeling of déjà vu .....

"Clinical trials test potential of hallucinogenic drugs to help patients with terminal illnesses"

"Scientists are exploring the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD to treat a range of ailments from depression to cluster headaches and obsessive compulsive disorder."

Listen to the audio here

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle> I am getting a feeling of déjà vu ..... purification is usually associated with Nazi Germany, however, less acknowledged, is the enthusiasm of the eugenics movement in the United States.

"The eugenics movement coincided with one of the greatest eras in U.S. immigration. During the first two decades of the 20th century, 600,000-1,250,000 immigrants per year entered the country through Ellis Island (except during World War I). Unlike earlier waves of immigrants who came primarily from northern Europe, the 20th century brought an influx from southern and eastern Europe. Eugenicists, most of whom were of northern and western European heritage, worried that the new immigrants weakened America biologically, and lobbied for federal legislation to selectively restrict immigration from "undesirable" countries."

eugenics |yoōˈjeniks|
plural noun [treated as sing. ]
the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. Developed largely by Francis Galton as a method of improving the human race, it fell into disfavor only after the perversion of its doctrines by the Nazis. - New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd Edition

"There is a steady check in an old civilisation upon the fertility of the abler classes: the improvident and unambitious are those who chiefly keep up the breed. So the race gradually deteriorates, becoming in each successive generation less fit for a high civilization."-Francis Galton, 1865

"We civilised men do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick .... There is reason to believe that vaccination has preserved thousands... Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man itself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed."-Francis Galton, 1869

If you would like to learn more about ->eugenics, here, and a great short story by Jack London

Helen Keller Quote

<img style="display:block;
