Ms. Dushku doesn’t seem to be leaving the news arena, it so appears. After her journey to Camp Hale (read the previous blog), she is now heading towards the zone we came to know about a long, long time ago. Remember, Doctor Who?

Well, Torchwood, which is a spin-off of Doctor Who, is seeing its own spin-off now! And creators couldn’t find anyone better than Eliza Dushku, the star from Dollhouse. Her Echo (the character in Dollhouse) may not have travelled afar, Torchwood: Web of Lies certainly would.

But if you watch her role in Dollhouse, you would agree that there could be no justifiable reason to explain why the show got cancelled so early! You can check her out online, which would soon get riddled with the episodes of her new show.

Her role and acting in Dollhouse was exactly what a viewer at home would like to see; what came into the minds of the channel operators and production head is beyond my observation.

But that’s history; with Torchwood: Web of Lies all ready to torch us with its thrilling tale and exciting adventures, little can be questioned on what Eliza would be making out of this partaking. It’s going to be nothing less than extraordinary, or as Barney says, Legendary!

This wouldn’t come up as a surprise to those, who are familiar with the works of Eliza. Those, who would be seeing her for the first time in Torchwood: Web of Lies…well, I can’t comment on that. Just that you don’t end up blaspheming yourself, check her out in Dollhouse before you move ahead!

The Dollhouse series, an American science fiction television show, created by writer-director Joss Whedon, under Mutant Enemy Productions, made its mark on the television circuit on February 13th, 2009, on the Fox network.

Though you might identify it as just another run of the mill, psychological thriller, but our Dollhouse download tab, has a story of its own, linked with it!

The show had an amazing plot, concept and storyline, which made it stand out from the rest of the crowd, and gave it a class of its own.

The show revolved around a corporation, running a number of underground establishments, called the “Dollhouses”, throughout the world.

These establishments program individuals, known as Actives (or Dolls), with temporary personalities and skills.

Clients with big pockets hire Actives from Dollhouses, paying a huge price, for various purposes.

The series primarily follows an Active ‘Echo’, played by Eliza Dushku, on her journey towards self-awareness.

This is a stellar of a plot, on which the Dollhouse episodes capitalized with great efficacy.

The series was supposed to shut down after one season, but surprise, surprise!

The show had gathered such a humongous fan following by then, that the president of Fox Studios, had to bring back the show for a second season stating, “If we’d canceled Joss’s show I’d probably have 110 million e-mails this morning from the fans”.

Big words there!

And that too, from a man that matters!

Watch Dollhouse episodes online, if you have not enjoyed them yet, as these lines by the Fox president, surely speak volumes about the show’s popularity and worth.

There were several reasons why the show became such a hit, and I think, the best way to figure those out, are to catch the show.

How?

Simple!

You can catch all the Dollhouse interludes, via the online way!

This is one show that is incredibly smart and keeps you hooked and gripped to it, until it has drained everything out of you, and left you with a feeling of having been consumed, yet wanting to be consumed even more.

The former Fox show Dollhouse aired just 13 episodes in its second and final season. Dollhouse was created by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. Aside from Buffy, Whedon has not had good luck with his television creations. His previous show Firefly, which also aired on Fox, was pulled after only airing 12 of its 13 filmed episodes. While Firefly spawned a legion of fans (knows as Browncoats) and a theatrical film, Dollhouse failed to ignite much excitement from anyone. It’s unfortunate because Dollhouse was full of potential stifled by endless attempts to attract new fans by repeatedly restating the concept episode after episode.

I can see why the show might have been a turn off for people. Its concept is hard to embrace. Dollhouse stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, a “doll,” who is programmed to be someone’s fantasy. Often times those fantasies involved sex, and seeing someone forced into a kind of sexual slavery is not exactly most people’s cup of tea. Being that many of the characters were dolls, who were always different people, it was hard to find someone to root for. The characters that weren’t dolls were often quite despicable and it was hard to like anyone at all. Still, even with those drawbacks Dollhouse, at its heart, was a very engaging and clever show.

Season Two is a bit of a reboot. After the excitement of the last few episodes of Season One, I expected the second season to start out with a bang. It didn’t. The beginning of the second season is reminiscent of the beginning of the first. The dolls are programmed and go out on different missions. The story arc established during the last half of the first season was pushed almost to the background. It was like the show was being reintroduced.

It is not until more than half way through the season that we see the menacing Alpha, brilliantly played by Firefly’s Alan Tudyk, again. The show does pick up speed in the second half of the season, but there was not enough time to do everything the show hinted at. Instead storylines obviously meant to span a lot of time were wrapped up in only a few episodes.

What is there is quite engaging. The episode dealing with the mysterious attic, the place “broken” dolls and dissidents are sent to, is one of the best of the entire series. There is a great guest appearance by Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) as the Washington D.C. counterpart to Topher (Fran Kranz). Speaking of Topher, he is the most interesting character on the show. During most of the first season, he was extremely unlikeable. He was annoying and completely amoral. Topher is the brain partly responsible for the development of the doll technology, and that is a burden that begins to weigh heavily. At first he was only interested in solving the puzzles of the mind. He was so pleased with his brilliance at hacking into people’s minds like a computer, he forgot they were people. We see in “Epitaph One” that the realization he is messing with the essence of humanity has caused him to descend into madness. We get to see sparks of that realization in Season Two.

We do get to see more about the mysterious Caroline, whom Echo used to be. It would have been nice to have more of Caroline’s back story earlier. I think knowing more about Caroline would have given audiences more to root for. There would have been more of a reason to feel sorry for Caroline’s predicament. I do like the idea that Echo has become her own person. She is not just an empty doll. She has developed (with the help of Alpha) her own distinct personality. It is a personality that doesn’t want to be destroyed and given back to Caroline.

It’s surprising religion or spirituality did not play a part in Dollhouse Echo/Caroline is one body that has housed two minds. If Echo is her own person, does that mean Echo has her own soul. And, who created Echo? Was it just Topher’s programming and Alpha’s manipulation, along with remnants of Caroline’s will? These are complicated issues never dealt with. It seems as if that there had been a determination that there are only brains and no souls.

Parallel to the idea that Echo has developed beyond doll state, there is a storyline between Sierra (Dichen Lachmen) and Victor (Enver Gjokaj), two dolls who have fallen in love. Their love exists whether they are in doll state or have been programmed to be other people. It’s a nice touch to show the cracks in the doll technology.

There is a heartbreaking episode showing how Sierra came to be at the dollhouse. This episode is integral to Topher’s role and his evolving viewpoint on the work he is doing. Victor does not get as much of a featured back story, but we do learn why he is there. Enver Gjokaj’s acting is a highlight of the series. Gjokaj effortlessly changes personalities so flawlessly it’s easy to forget he’s even doing it. His dead on impersonation of Topher is not to be missed.

While Dollhouse was by no means a perfect show I still would put it in the “cancelled too soon” category along with Firefly. Dollhouse had so much unrealized potential it’s a shame it did not catch on with audiences. It would have been great to see more about the head of the Dollhouse, Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams). I could never figure out where she came from or why she was involved with the organization. I’m sure more would have been planned for her had the show continued. I also have to wonder if the twist revelation in “The Hollow Man” (second to last episode) would have been the same if the show had been renewed. I am grateful the show drew to a final conclusion, unlike Eliza Dushku’s previous show Tru Calling, rather left the audience hanging forever.

The DVD features commentaries on two episodes, as well as outtakes, deleted scenes, the shows defining moments, and a looking back discussion with the cast and Joss Whedon. I really enjoyed the “Looking Back” featurette. It had Joss Whedon, Eliza Dushku, Alan Tudyk, Dichen Lachmen, Enver Gjokaj, Miracle Laurie (Mellie), Fran Kranz, and Olivia Williams. They discussed their favorite moments on the show and what it was like playing their characters. It was a good wrap up to the show, and a nice farewell from cast.
From the DVD-exclusive episode “Epitaph One” and then continuing into the second season, the series picked up speed considerably. Its slow-moving season one was composed mostly of stand-alone episodes which raised big questions about the dangers of the Dollhouse, but rarely answered them. Season two raised the stakes, presenting the possibilities of the technology–all the bad, and sometimes the good, things that can happen with the ability to put different personalities in a person’s head–and showing its apocalyptic effects (on the world, and on the brain).

And then it was over.

Despite their sudden (though, sadly, expected) cancellation, the Dollhouse writers were given time to wrap up all loose ends and give us a satisfying ending to their grand enterprise. There wasn’t much time, but they made the most out of it, and for the last few weeks of the show we were treated to mind-bending questions and powerful performances.

But as a viewer, I was also frustrated. Why did they hold back the intensity in the first season? All these questions about the morality of wiping the dolls, as opposed to the engagements themselves, only came up in the second season. Only then did the writers really explore the larger possibilities and problems of creating and maintaining dolls, and the larger, more odious goals such a project could entail. I still think the show would be better if those little questions were dropped early on, setting everything up for one climax after another.

The show’s accomplishments in its second and final season are even more impressive given that Dollhouse labored under a unique predicament before it even premiered. The original pilot was scrapped after several remake attempts. The first five episodes had personality-of-the-week storylines, making it hard for viewers to connect to the overarching story and its implications when it mattered the most. Of course, it didn’t help that FOX put the show in the Friday night death slot, attempting a sci-fi theme alongside with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. All those factors have been discussed and debated everywhere else, so I’ll just ask a different question: even with all that, could Dollhouse have been saved?

Dollhouse‘s biggest problem was a lack of confidence in the premise and the material. The network found the show too risky from the start, but it was only once the writers began to take huge risks that the series reached its potential. The first season’s biggest reveals were probably Lubov, Mellie and Dr. Saunders being actives, as well as Alpha’s composite event–a stark difference from the second season’s exploration of Sierra’s pre-Active past, or Paul and Echo’s relationship, or Topher’s development of the technology that would soon cause the apocalypse.

The potential to take Dollhouse onto the grand scale was there all along, though it never really occurred to me until I saw “Epitaph One,” and the stakes were legitimately upped. Like one of the show’s own “sleeper” agents, the episode came out of nowhere (literally, since Fox didn’t even air it) and revitalized the show with its message, leading to philosophical debates about morality and free will, about doing bad things for the evil good. If those questions had come in earlier, things could’ve been much different, and perhaps right now I’d be wondering what new horizons lay ahead for Dollhouse season three.

Nonetheless, I’m glad Dollhouse ended every relevant storyline cleanly and clearly, despite the apparent pacing issues (what about the events between 2010 and 2020?) and all the questions they could’ve explored, if given more time. I know I can’t get everything I hoped for in the series since it began last year, but it was still one hell of an entertaining ride, ending on an optimistic yet somber note. And for that, I thank everyone involved.

What words can be used to describe Joss Whedon’s latest complete series on television? “Weird” is one. “Rushed” is another.

Granted, the show only had slightly more than a full season’s worth of episodes to establish itself (26 in all), but Dollhouse never really felt like something Joss really cogitated on and imagined from the bottom of his soul and thought through every detail. The series felt more like a favor he was doing for Eliza Dushku to prevent her from being typecast as a tough chick, with some clever bits thrown in.

Overall, the series wasn’t as good as his previous attempts, but still much better than 99% of the other crap on television. Major spoilers follow after the jump.

Had the series continued, would there have been an Epitaph Three, Four and Five? It was the most clever piece of the series. It’s hard to believe that the concept only came from a need to film an emergency 13th episode on the cheap.

The big shock of the episode was Paul’s death. He lasted so long just to be wiped out from a lucky bullet? Joss and company are good at tricks like that, and it did drive home the theme that nobody is dead so long as they are remembered (plus a little piece of Paul will live forever in Echo’s mind).

The lack of opening and closing credits was very cool and I wish more shows would adopt such a habit. Was the same thing done with Epitaph One? I don’t recall.

What happened to Whiskey from Epitaph One? Perhaps Alpha did. We’ll never know. Obviously Alpha became a good guy within 10 years. It beats being the Joker knock-off that he was. When I saw that the deceased Summer Glau (by that I mean her character, not the actress) was a guest-star, I was hoping for a Firefly mini-reunion. Oh well.

The “future slang” was kind of funny, with terms like “butchers” and “dumb shows”. Also technology related terms like “power down a sec” and “log off”. Alpha had the best line in the episode: “It spoke to the schizophrenic in me. Both of them.”

Anthony/Victor’s role in the show ended up being a tribute to Mad Max. How on Earth was Priya able to raise a kid in that environment? Still, it was probably better than raising him in (insert really bad city here).

The biggest problem of the ending was that apparently Topher suddenly had the capability of curing everyone (along with acting like a sacrificial savior). That conflicts with what we’re told before about imprinting. The original personality of anybody that is wiped, unless it’s copied to a hard drive (or flash drive in the case of ten years later. It’s surprising they didn’t use solid-state drives in the first place), is gone. It seemed like a rushed Hollywood ending and was awkward in conjunction with the apocalyptic tone of the series.

Sorry Joss. There was some really good stuff there towards the end but this one wasn’t a winner. That being said, I’m still looking forward to the next one.

Watch Epitaph Two (series finale) Episode here
