Omega Museum

When thinking of Omega watches in time keeping history I think of 3 great events. The Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 where the first stopwatches were used with Omega being the official timekeeper, and it is the same today. 1946 Omega introducing the the Seamaster, the famous James Bond watch. 1969 the Omega Speedmaster Professional is the first watch to go to the moon on the wrist of Neil Armstrong.

But of course these are milestones of Omega's men watches. So when I visited the Omega museum in their Vienna store I was curious to see the history of women's watches in this industry that has been primarily man dominated. The curious thing to know is that wristwatches were first created for women only, while men used only pocket watches. This separation was very strict at the time at the point that no man would be ever seen wearing a watch on his wrist because it was considered feminine. Only after the WWI wristwatches were introduced also for men, after soldiers found it more practical to wear their timepieces on their wrists, instead of having them in their pockets.

Seeing the engravings on the covers of the pocket watches, the accuracy of the dial design and the precious materials you could tell how watches showed status from the beginning of their use. It has never been an object used just to show the time, has it?

Into the World of Lena Hoschek

Last month I was in Vienna for the worldwide launch of the new Omega Ladymatic and to get the real feel of austrian fashion, we visited the showroom of the designer Lena Hoschek. Entering the showroom was like entering a parallel world and time. The designer is famous for her 40s and 50s pin-up inspired dresses, with motives and patterns taken from folklore, mixing everything with rock&roll and punk. Lena is the former assistant of Vivienne Westwood from whom apparently she has learned how to express the eccentricity.

Lena Hoschek's Spring Summer 2013 collection has the theme of a Mexican fiesta with flower prints with a wide range of colors, ultra-feminine cuts with over the knees skirts and an highlighted waist. In the showroom Lena showed us also the workshop where every dress is made. But my favorite part was her office, where the whole place was a moodboard. It was like entering in Lena Hoschek's world and see how her creative process is influenced by vintage photography, design and prints.

The vintage inspired collections of Lena have something more to them being coveted by modern women as well. Lana Del Rey just wore a Hoschek creation on the Cannes film Festival red carpet. The new vintage rockabilly is taking over the fashion world exploring different countries' folklore from Russia to Mexico. Look also what Dolce & Gabbana has done so successfully with the Sicilian style folklore making it a signiture for their brand.

Vanity Fair Pic Chic

Just the other day I noticed on Instagram a family member of mine showing their One Direction and Selena Gomez posters and I'm like 'what's wrong with you'. Then I remembered my room's walls when I was a teenager full of Leonardo di Caprio's images and magazine cut offs. We all have posters in our walls during our teen years, and most of us are ashamed of that phase. I think I was lucky enough to have teenage dreams about a boy who turned out just fine in his adulthood and went to make movies with Scorsese and Spielberg.

So here is me 14 years later with Leo again. In the big worldwide promotion of his latest movie 'The Great Gatsby' Leonardo di Caprio is featured on the May issue cover of Vanity Fair. I attended the Vanity Fair Pic Chic event celebrating spring and eco-living with an afternoon of delicious food, great jazz music and celebrities. I was dressed in white enjoying my time with friends and surrounded by Leonardo di Caprio covers. The best Sunday ever.

With Everlasting Love I was first introduced to the the greatest jazz-pop artist of the recent years, Jamie Cullum. So when I got the invitation to the private showcase of his latest album Momentum at Café Trussardi I was super excited. During the event he played some tracks from Momentum (to be released on May 20th) including a version of Pure Imagination from the 1971 musical Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, but also a few his past album The Persuit. We also got to see his signiture move of singing while standing on the piano. This was a great afternoon of music and drinks.

In the Greek mythology each of the gods had his own scent and when the ancient Greeks felt that smell it was thought to be the god's presence. Today I use the same for the people around me, associating each person to their particular fragrance. While most of the people have a signature fragrance that represent them, more and more are changing perfumes regularly. Especially spring is the perfect time to change our fragrances, going from the warm notes of winter to more fresh notes of fruits.

With Diesel I had an unusual experience of fragrance tasting. It consisted in experiencing the exquisite ingredients that make up the new men fragrance Diesel Only The Brave Tattoo and understanding the difference from the previous fragrance Diesel Only The Brave.

America's Cup with Nespresso

5 things I learned about the America's Cup :

The America's Cup World Series uses AC57 catamerans which are smaller than the ones used at the final America's Cup race or at the Louis Vuitton Cup. The World Series is used from teams to prepare themselves and get points for the final race.
America's Cup is as important as the Olympics or World Soccer championship, at least for those with a passion for sailing.
There are no women on the sailing teams but I bet there will be soon. What about an all-women team?
The winner of the competition chooses were the next America's cup will be held. In 2010 Oracle Team won the race and has chosen San Francisco Bay for the 2013 final race. I think it will be great watching the race from the Alcatraz Island.
This is one of the most inclusive sport races I've ever seen. More than 100 thousand people were on the Naples shore watching the race for free. A whole village is build for the public everytime the America's Cup visits a city where fans can enjoy week of sports, food, drinks and with Nespresso as a sponsor also some delicious coffee.

Hello Emirates Team New Zealand

Did I tell you how great is the food in Naples? It gets even better when you have dinner while you are in a very interesting company, with people that live in a totally different world from yours. I'm talking about the team New Zealand sailors, the skipper Dean Baker, grinder Winston Macfarlane and sail coordinator Grant Lorenz. When asked which one is their favorite city to race, of course they had to answer Naples, but there is no place like home so Auckland would be the more sincere one. Even though the team confessed not having the time to visit properly the cities where they travel while racing, but just like everyone of us they appreciated the Italian food and the beer. I was also curious why there weren't any women on any of the teams, and surprise surprise Dean Baker told me that an all women team is getting ready to enter the races in 2014.

Nespresso Sailing Experience

I've sailed a few times in my life, but with 'sailed' I mean laying in a boat, having drinks and sunbathing. I have always been curious about sailing as an activity but the chance to learn something had never come up. Till the day Nespresso arranged a sailing experience during the America's Cup and here am I having a crash course on how to get the boat going with the wind. There was more to the experience as we had to learn the basics so that we could better understand what was really happening at the America's Cup competition. And what is the best way to learn? Have a competition ourselves. Bloggers and journalists were divided in teams, each having a professional skipper on board. We applied the same rules and tactics as the professional teams, with a different, smaller boat but we had fun, had no accidents, and learned a lot. My team was made of Laura, the German GQ journalist and I with the help of our great teacher Lars we managed to get 2nd place on the first race, and 4th on the second race. We never won, but we had a great time and each one of us did different parts of the sailing experience. I learned what is the jib (the sail that you need to change the direction of the boat), the mainsail, the tiller and how they worked. I had a great time, so I'm definitely thinking of having a sailing holiday.

Napoli: Fashion, Beauty, Art and much more

This was my 2nd time visiting the city of Naples in the south of Italy and like the first time it was an amazing experience. The city is always sunny, people are noisy and the decadence surrounding us feels so romantic. The first time I was here I was the typical tourist visiting the Naples cathedral, the Castel Nuovo and the Royal Palace. Taking a boat to visit Capri and the Blue Grotto was an unforgettable experience. This time it was a different kind of visit, thanks to Nespresso, who had me there during the America's Cup World Series and gave me the chance to know Naples for it's artisans culture in fashion, style and art.

The first day of the visit we had the chance to meet Maurizio Marinella the nephew of founder Eugenio Marinella and now owner the of most famous men tie company in the world, a real symbol of Italian elegance and style. We visited Boellis a traditional barber shop founded in 1924, which more than a place for cutting hair looks like a saloon for entertaining customers with a unique experience. The brothers Scuotto showed us around their shop and laboratory where the famous sculptures were created. Their handmade sculptures of magi (wise men), devil's and different Neapolitan folklore figures are a favorite among royals and celebrities, present in the most famous museums worldwide.

This was a different way of looking at the city, through the tales of a special guide the Avv. Giancarlo Maresca which is a self-proclaimed 'guardian of beauty' and founder of the Neapolitan association for promoting artisanship. Being born and raised in this city he showed us the to the typical streets, the workshops and traditions of Naples.

Shooting Loverdose by Diesel

The first fragrance that I can recall using was Obsession by Calvin Klein. Being it the first, I was so used to it on my skin, on my clothes and all over my room (yes I used to spray it all over the bed also) that I didn't change it for years. I used it as my signature scent and would ask people to give it to me as a gift for birthdays, Valentine's Day and whatever gift occasion there was. I remember having few unopened bottles always on my vanity table as a stock for future use. Then one day CK stopped its production (later on it got reformulated) and eventually I ran out of it. After the initial despair I had to go and find a new fragrance and make it mine. I remember smelling 20 different fragrances and going out of the store empty handed. That's because I had no clue what I was looking for. The next time I went to the beauty store I was lucky to run into a very great shop assistant who was a specialist on perfumes that opened to me the world of fragrances, notes and compositions. After telling her my love story with Obsession, she found me an almost identical fragrance Must De Cartier. Both fragrances shared notes of civer, vetiver, sandalwood, musk, jasmine and bergamot.

After getting Must De Cartier I started researching more the fragrances world and decided to never go back to a single signature scent. From that moment on I started getting new fragrances every 2-3 months and pairing them with outfits and moods. Some fragrances use to cheer me up on rainy days, others calm me down on particular stressful days. Some perfumes are strongly associated with love stories, cities I've lived in, places I've been on holidays or people I've met.

While I can't say I can recognize every note in every fragrance, I think I've become better with time in at least knowing the perfume's category and telling the difference of the 2-3 main notes. The main categories of fragrances are Floral, Citrus, Oriental or Woodsy, with some having combined characteristics like for example fruity-floral. The floral fragrances are very feminine and soft; the citrus fragrances, known also as fruity, are very fresh and clean; the oriental ones have notes of musk and/or vanilla are very intense and the woodsy ones tend to be very strong with woody scents of sandalwood and/or patchouli. I can't say which ones are my absolute favorites, but in summer I tend to use more fruity perfumes and in winter I love the musk on oriental perfumes. Here you have a little guide to the fragrance notes I prepared to better understand the composition, so next time you get a new perfume you can better recognize your favorite notes.

TOP NOTES

Fresh, light and sharp scents that hit you as soon as you spray the fragrance. Disappear after few seconds.

Common Top Notes: citrus, bergamot, orange, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea

MIDDLE NOTES

Warm, rich and powerful scents that make up the core perfume and bloom on the skin with the help of base notes.

Common Middle Notes: geranium, Melissa, nutmeg, black pepper, rosemary.

BASE NOTES

Deep and lingering scents that can last for weeks. Some have also aphrodisiac properties. These notes are the ones that support the scent and the one you need to pay attention to when choosing a perfume.

Common Base Notes: cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, benzoin, ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, vanilla

It Finally Stopped Raining

It has been raining like forever. In Italy we've had 2 consecutive holidays and I couldn't wait to get out of the city and enjoy some connection with the nature. But of the week long holiday in mountain/lake house it rained all the time except for a brief afternoon. I spent those 4 hours of break given by the skies having a stroll by the Iseo Lake and by the time I got back to the car it started raining again.

Now I'm in Milan and it keeps on being cloudy and you never know when it will start to rain during the day. I keep forgiving the umbrella at home. So at this point I've got enough of it. I can't wait for a real spring to come and so finally we can take out the sandals and light dresses to be styled with bright jackets. April is always the month of the year that one doesn't know what to wear because the temperatures go up and down all the time.

See by Chloe Fragrance

My April fragrance has been the newly released See by Chloé fragrance created by Michel Almairac, who also has created the original Chloé fragrance, another favorite of mine. See by Chloé has a very fresh floral secent perfect for Spring. The composition is made of top notes of bergamot, middle notes of apple blossom and jasmine and the base notes of vanilla and sandalwood. I'm a great fan of vanilla fragrances for spring. A vanilla notes are classic but sensual and give that sense of clean and fresh. Also the balance of the Jasmin and Apple blossom is perfect.

The bottle as you can see has the shape of a bird cage and the idea of getting dozens of fragrance bottles together to form a chandelier is awesome. I wish I could replicate the chandelier but that would mean buying around 20 bottles.

Gardens of Monaco

Last month I went for a family weekend in Monaco. In March the St. Martin Gradens are in full bloom so the visit started from there. While Monaco is a city famous for its casinos there are also some wonderful parks that I would suggest visiting. St. Martin Gardens are found in the old town and is made of small paths that are surrounded by exotic plants, works of art and a little pond. The St.Martin Gardens are like an open book of biology given that every plant has its name written so take out your phones and get ready for some Wikipedia reading. The view is breathtaking given that the park is located over the Monaco 'Rock'. Another garden that I love in Monaco is the one behind Le Casino. It is located over an apartment building and has a great view of the port. There are also 2 other parks on my list; the Japanese gardens which are a perfect replica based on Zen design and the Jardin Exotique with thousands of succulents and a huge cave.

Transformation

Transformation is a keyword to design. So when Geox makes shoes in collaboration with the designer Patrick Cox featuring studs the consumer doesn't care if the shoe 'breathes' as the brand's transformation from Comfort to Design takes over the decision making process. On the other side Bark releases the Barc Sac made with the same concept as the famous montgomery with the square knit pattern in vivid colors brought on a bag. Transformation has effected also my style, from the nice girl with longs hair wearing flower print dresses to the girl who shaved her head, and came to love leather jackets and studded shoes. Transformation is a state that I love, followed by the surprise effect that comes when a brand plays with its own identity. I remember when I was a teenager reading Glamour Magazine US and being fascinated by all these beautiful women on the editorials wearing designer clothes and having the time of their lives. Later on after moving to Milan and having met few models at parties or having friends who were looking out for agencies I learned how naif I'd been thinking that the models were women, while actually they were teenagers with a lots of make up, that they had great clothes while they were really shopping at H&M, and that they had this amazing lifestyle while the truth is that only 1 model in 100.000 will go and become a the new face of an ad campaign or 1 in a million will become Claudia Schiffer. One of the things that I came to learn is the crazy editorial calendar which is planned 3-4 months in advance resulting in models shooting Spring Summer collections from October to December so that the images can be published from January to April when magazines show all the SS collections and trends. While some editorials have a big enough budget to move all the set to a beach location in a wonderful island somewhere lost in the Pacific Ocean, most of the editorials don't have that kind of budget meaning that you could find a model in underwear shooting at -2 degrees in a sunny December day.

All this to tell you how I found myself shooting at the end of January a Spring Summer 2013 themed feature with 2 degrees, a fur coat keeping me warm between breaks and a little help from my friend Francesca. And during that hour of freezing cold I tried fighting the cold with the power of imagination so I visualized sandy beaches in Thailand. The lesson from this photo shoot was that the mind has incredible power over our body.

A to Z of The Dolls Factory: A is for Anjeza

If there exists some kind of fortune telling based on the letter of your life just as it exists with numbers I'd get A for everything.

A is for Anjeza, but also for the 80% of my family members. I was supposed do be called Stella, but at the last minute my family changed their mind and went for Anjeza (Albanian version of Agnes Eng., Agnese Ita.) inspired by a character in the book David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I read the book at around 12 years old to understand the life and personality of Agnes Wickfield and promised myself never to love someone without being loved back like she does in the book. At the time I knew nothing about love but I can say that the 12 year old me would be very proud now. Se esiste un qualche tipo di previsione del futuro basato su una lettera che ci caratterizza come c'è per i numeri, la mia sarebbe sicuramente la A.

A è per Anjeza, ma anche per il 80% dei nomi dei miei familiari. Sarei dovuta essere chiamata Stella, ma all'ultimo minuto la mia famiglia ha cambiato idea e hanno scelto Anjeza (versione albanese del nome Agnese ), ispirandosi a un personaggio tratto dal romanzo David Copperfield di Charles Dickens. Ho letto il libro a circa 12 anni per capire la vita e la personalità di Agnes Wickfield e promisi a me stessa di non amare mai qualcuno senza essere ricambiata come fa lei nel libro. A quel tempo non sapevo nulla sul amore, ma posso dire che l'Anjeza di12 anni mi sarebbe molto orgogliosa di me ora. Mentre Agnes Wickfeild non è il mio personaggio dei romanzi preferito, credo di essere abbastanza fortunata a non essere stata chiamata come Emma in Madame Bovary.

Milan Design Week is the new Milan Fashion Week with better weather, more events opened to the public and with the streets full of stylish people. If I were to advice on the perfect time to visit Milan, I'd say that during this week you'd get the chance to meet young creatives, visit many museums with free access, and get to enjoy the design world taking over the city.

La Milan Design Week è diventata nuova Fashion Week, ma con il tempo assai migliore, più eventi aperti al pubblico e con le strade piene di gente alla moda. Se dovessi consigli are un periodo ideale per visitare la città di Milano per quelli che non vivono qua sarebbe proprio il periodo del Fuori Salone. Durante questa settimana si possono incontrare persone interessanti e menti creative che girono per le via della Zona Tortona, Via Savona, università Statele, Lambrate ecc. Tanti musei sono con accesso gratuito, cosi come tanti party ed eventi.

Hemingway wrote these words while experiencing his first Spring in Paris in the 20s but the same can be applied for every city in Europe even today. Spring has awaken the city of Milan and I finally could through away the winter coats and get into full spring mood. This time of the year gives me so much happiness and energy that I hope to be among those people considered by Hemingway to be 'as good as spring itself'.

Hemingway scrisse queste parole, mentre stava vivendo la sua prima primavera a Parigi negli anni '20, ma lo stesso vale anche ad oggi per tutte le citta d'Europa. La primavera ha risvegliato la città di Milano e finalmente ho potuto mettere via i cappotti invernali ed entrare in pieno mood primaverile. Questo periodo dell'anno mi dà tanta felicità ed energia, e spero di essere tra quelle persone considerate da Hemingway 'belle come la primavera stessa'.

The Little Black Jacket in Milan

The event celebrating worldwide the iconic Chanel jacket finally came to Milan to promote the book of “The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld“.

The little black jacket is a symbol of style, elegance and femininity that has always been a classic timeless piece since invented by Coco Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld have styled and photographed more than 100 celebrities who pay tribute to this classical creation showing how the jacket can be worn from very different styles, everytime interpreted in a unique way.

In 2013 The Little Black jacket book and exhibition come in a new edition featuring new celebrities like Diane Kruger, Carole Bouquet, Keira Knightley and Lou Doilon just to name a few. The tour of this new edition started in Milan on April 4th with a private showing and party. The exhibition is opened to the public from April 6th till April 20th at La Rotonda della Besana then it will leave the city to continue the celebrations elsewhere.
