I’m just the luckiest Yorkie alive; today I am 7, that’s almost a half century in doggy’s years. So what’s it like to be old, you ask? Just another day. I slept all Morning and then it was P.A.R.T.Y. time. I had balloons and presents and a cake that “D” made. Then of course, there’s the obligatory photo shoot, we have to have the photo shoot, then the Kisses and the belly rubs and the “Yum Yum elevators”,,,,,,sheesh….I’m not two “D”, I’m a grown Lady

My Birthday Cake Recipe

(Note all of the ingredients are safe for your dog to eat)

Ingredients

1/2 cup oatmeal

1/2 ripe banana

1/2 cup of flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup applesauce

1/4 cup honey

1/8 teaspoon Cinnamon

1/4 cup peanut butter

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 egg

Topping (Options):

mini treats

peanut butter

Dollop of Whipped cream

Instructions

Mix ingredients. Set oven to 350 degrees. Spray cupcake pan with nonstick spray. or Pour into cupcake liners. 1/3 cup makes 6 cup cakes. Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool. Spread peanut butter on top. Decorate with mini treats and a Dollop of Whipped Cream

Ode to my “D”

You feed me when I’m hungry. You keep water in my dish, You let me sleep on anything, or in any place I wish. You sometimes let me lick your hands, or even lick your face…despite the fact I’ve licked myself in every private place.
You taught me how to come when called, you taught me how to sit. You always let me go outside, so I can take a shit.
I’ve been with you through oh, so much…through laughter and through tears. I hope you live to be a hundred…that’s 700 in doggie years!...... (Thanks "D")

After I opened my presents we took photos: I got a green bottle bear, who I named Green Bear, a red Squeaky Mouse who I now call Red Mouse and a nice dress up Harness and Leash. I would show you the big light up Goblin Balloon, but he accidentally got busted, (Tee Hee that was fun). Oh almost forgot; lots of treats.
Well another year has gone buy and I had a great time. Thanks everyone for making my day special.

Reaching Middle Age

"D" made me a Delicious Cake

Can you believe it? Another 7 (Dog) years have gone by: Today I am 6 years old (42 Dog Years) I have reached Middle Age, Barkobummer.

On Thursday I had a Cut, Poo, Rinse, Blowout and Pawdicure by Mary at my favorite Beauty Paw-Lair, “Kris’s Kennel Kuts” in Clayton. I Like Mary, she does a good Job and now I am Beautiful for my Birthday Party.

I am such a lucky Yorkie. “D” made me a Moatmeal, Honey and Cinnamon Apple Sauce cake with whipped cream and Mini Treats. I got the recipe from him, here it is: (Oh! BTW “D” says all ingredients are safe for Dogs to eat, although some dogs do not tolerate Dairy or Gluten ….Lucky me I’m not one of them)

Dog Birthday Cupcakes

This was so Good

1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 ripe banana

1/2 cup of flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use Cup Cake Paper insert. Pour into insert into pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes (toothpick should come out clean). Let cool. Spread peanut butter on top. Decorate with mini treats and a Dollop of Whipped Cream

"My First owner, (I don’t remember him anymore), was an elderly gentleman who had to go into an assisted living home, and they would not let him keep me. So, at an early age of 8 months, I was left on the door step (figuratively speaking), abandoned, of the Cumber County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, In Vineland, New Jersey (CCSPCA). There are some very nice people there, like Robyn and Christine, who are now my Facebook friends, but I found myself Homeless, alone, abandoned, scared and up for adoption. There were rumors running rampant among the other dogs that if someone didn’t adopt me, soon, that I might be gassed and I saw a wall of dead dog memorials at the front entrance on the way in, I didn’t know what to think."

Roarrr I'm a Dino-Sour

Triceratops

Hi, it’s Dolly: This year for my 5^th Halloween, I have decided to be a Tricycle Tops Dino-Sour complete with Cave Man. I wasn’t sure what a Trycycle Tops was at first, so I did a little research at the Barkibrary.

Triceratops

First of all I found out I was saying the name wrong, it’s Triceratops. The Triceratops was a plant eating animal, with 3 horns, that live in what is now North America around 68 Million years ago (that’s 9.7 million dog years and that’s a long time ago). His name means Three Horned Face, but that’s all Greek to me. They were about 30 feet long and 9 feet high. How do we know this, you ask? It was from their bones, some of which are in museums like the Smithsonian and the Natural History in Washington, DC and New York. They probably had skin like a modern day Elephant and were thought to be herding animals that grazed on low plants and Vegetation and not Yorkies.

Even though I have a caveman on my back, people didn’t exist that long ago and neither did Yorkies. It’s a big myth that the Fred Flintstone started in Bedrock, and has no basis in reality (it’s called Poetic License in writing). I thought it would be fun, so here I am. What do you think?

It really is, can you believe it, my 5th Birthday today. I’ve been bouncing off the walls since 4:00 am this morning. I’m so excited, I’m 35 in Dog years and I’m going to celebrate with some Melon Juice. I know the Barkday Fairy came last night and is hiding in the Kitchen on top of the Fidgetator. It’s Sunday, so I’m not able to tell the Mailman or the UPS Driver, how excited I am, but I’ll chase the Squirrels and make some noise at least……Nap Time….

So what does a Yorkie do on her Barkday? Well! First of all ya gotta get all dooded out in some fine cloths, maybe a hat. Then you make demands on “D” all day, because you know that today you are “SHE WHO CAN NOT BE DENIED”. I’ll sit pretty, all lady like, and give him the EYES. He’ll never know he is being manipulated, wink! Wink! So my day started really great.

Sammy Snake

I got up, went outside and did the normal Uno-Duo, and then I was off to play with Sammy Snake, as he and I are training to take Mount Fujiyama. ….Nap Time…….Then I took a walk down to see Uncle Bob, he’s my favorite. I got lots of Barkday treats down there; he spoils me, just like “D”……Little Drink….Nap Time….

We had a Party Tonight: “D” made me a CHICKEN dinner and we’re having a Melon Cake with Whipped Cream later. I got some wonderful presents today, I am so spoiled. I have 2 new Hoodies and a Fox Toy that I’m going to name Freddie.

On the Subject of Barkofarts

I think I need to explain something to my human friends: Have you ever wonder how Dogs say hello to one another?

Just seconds after my “D” gets home, he’s face to face with my wagging Stub (my tail was cut off as a baby, but that’s another story for another time), wildly excited I just can’t get enough of him. I used to get so excited I would pee myself, but I’m a big Girl now and can contain myself. He will then be blitzed by 9 pounds of motorized hair showering him with kisses. Actually, what he is really being showered with is my spit (He calls them kisses because it sounds better). But that’s not the only way I say hello?

Like you, I have five senses: smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste. Humans use the sense of sight as the primary sense for recognizing one another. Dogs, however, use smell. Smell is so important that a dog's sense of smell is thousands of times better than yours. Therefore, not only can I tell what a person smells like -- as opposed to a cat -- but I can also tell the difference between members of your human family based on their individual smells. (Lots of teenage human girls can smell their younger brothers when they are nearby, but that's because boys hate taking showers, not because girls possess high level sniffing abilities.)

I think that's poop over there

Dogs recognize one another by the smell of their pee and poop. That's why dogs greet each other not eye to eye, but nose to butt. By taking a quick whiff of my friend's behind, I instantly know who she's been with. That is also why I smell everything I can during a walk. By sniffing grass, bushes, trees and signposts, I know which other neighborhood dogs have been around lately.

Here is one more fact to consider when you are lounging around petting man's best friend: Dogs are farsighted; that means they have terrible vision up close. So they are far more likely to recognize who is nearby by smell rather than by sight.

That creates some interesting behavior when I am around other dogs. If one leaves the room, even for just a few seconds, we both smell each other's bottoms when we see each other again. If I translated that behavior into words, it would go something like this:

Sniffing Butt: Hey, where you been?

Sniffing My Butt: I was in the kitchen getting a drink, but now I'm back.

Snif: Want to take a nap?

Snif: Sure.

So what is the Moral of this story? Next time when I send Barkofarts, just know it’s only my way of blowing you kisses.

A Birthday Card from My "D"

Today September 6, 2014, I am 28 (in Dog years Silly) in Human Years I am 4. It seems like a long time ago when my “D” found and rescued me from the VinelandCCSPCA shelter. That was over 3 1/4 years ago. Since that time, I have a very nice home, even my own house, plenty of toys, nice cloths, great food and top health care. Best of all I know I am loved. I wish the other dogs had it so well.

Eating Cake and Opening Presents

I had a really Great day: we had a Birthday Party and I got a Yellow Toy Bear and some cloths for presents. I was really excited and after I had some cake, it was time to open some more gifts. I got a really nice Yellow Tennis outfit and a beautiful Pink Hoodie, a Frog Hoodie, as well as a really nice Cable Knit Sweater for the fall.

“D” made me a delicious Carrot and Peanut Butter Cake with Honey Cream Cheese Frosting. He said I should share the recipe with you so here it is:

Carrot Peanut Butter Doggie Cupcake

Ingredients:

My Birthday Cake

· 1 large egg

· 1/4 cup peanut butter

· 1/4 cup vegetable oil

· 1/3 cup honey

· 1 cup shredded carrots

· 1 cup whole wheat flour

· 1 teaspoon baking soda

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a six cup cupcake tin with cupcake papers. Combine the egg, peanut butter, oil, and honey in a large bowl.

2. Add in the carrots and stir to combine.

3. Combine the flour and baking soda in a small bowl and add to the carrot mixture. Stir until fully incorporated.

4. Divide among prepared cupcake tins. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few crumbs on it.

5. Remove from oven and let cool on wire rack. Frost tops with a little peanut butter before serving to your furry friend.

Cream Cheese Frosting

· 4 ounces of low fat cream cheese

· 3 tablespoons of canola oil

· 1 tablespoon of vanilla

· 1 dash of honey

My blonde Hair is soft and Silky

Hi Everybody

Winter is slowly coming around the corner and I thought I would share my experience with three of them. I know that some humans think that people are crazy for dressing up their dogs. Maybe they are and then again maybe not so nutty. Yorkies are special dogs and those of you that know me, know that I am VERY Special (wink wink).

A Yorkie has one of the most distinctive coats in the canine world. I am very much like a human, and can be very susceptible to the cold. There is a good reason for this. Most dogs have fur, and two coats of that, i.e., a soft undercoat and a course top coat that helps keep them warm. These types of dogs also shed in the summer time, which prevents overheating. The undercoat is like an insulation layer of fur in most dogs. Yorkies, on the other hand do not have two coats and my hair is like your hair, i.e., long, silky and soft (even though my “D” keeps it cut short most of the time). Now here comes the bonus part; because I have hair like a human, I don’t shed and my hair is hypoallergenic. The down side of this type of insulation is that I don’t like the cold, I prefer warm surroundings. How is this accomplished, you say? It’s accomplished by having a human that takes care of that need. This of course includes an assortment of Shirts, Hoodies, Sweaters, Coats and Shoes. (OK Halloween is mostly for fun, not function)

I have a nice house that keeps me out of drafts when they annoy me.

I have a nice warm bed and blankets to sleep on or under if I get cold.

When I go out, I have Sweaters and Hoodies for when there is a chill in the air

I have several winter jackets when it’s really cold, including a Parka and when the air is below freezing my “D” won’t let me stay outside very long (not that I want to)

Let’s not forget my feet. My feet are very tender and can get burned on hot roads in summer or frozen on cold ones in winter.

Do you know where the best place to keep warm in my house is? When I am chilled at night, I like to creep under the blanket and snuggle up behind my “D”. He is like a big furnace in a log cabin. I like to snuggle behind him and lay very quiet so as to disturb his sleep. Ahhhhh what a life.

One final note; even with a coat, your Yorkie is at risk for hypothermia during the winter. Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shivering and lethargy (that means lazy). If you see any of these symptoms, bring your dog inside immediately. If that's not possible, pick him/her up and hold him/her inside your jacket in the meantime.

Eats & Treats

Hi, some of you have been asking, “What do you Eat, Dolly”, so I thought I would tell you in a little blog I’m calling “Eats and Treats”. Ok, ok, there are all kinds of schools for thought, out there in the world, Raw vs Cooked, Dry vs Wet, Canned vs Fresh, Homemade vs Store Bought etc., so save your emails, cards and letters. This is what I eat. I am not necessarily recommending anything, but I will say, that my “D” treats me very well and my last Visit to the Veterinary Clinic, gave me an “AAA” bill of health and my Doctor Said to my “D”, and I Quote: “Whatever you are doing for her, keep it up, she is in remarkable health.”

EATS

Let’s start out with my Daily Diet. First what do I need: I weigh 8.4 pounds, so to maintain my ideal weight, considering I have typical activity, such as Guard duty on the front porch, Chasing Squirrels, small walks and nightly play, I need 300 calories per day. Dog’s needs are different from humans. They, of course, need essential nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Your dog must have all these in correct proportions to stay healthy. You can ask a breeder or veterinarian for advice, but it's up to you to see how the food affects your dog. If your dog's energy level is right for his breed and age, if his skin and coat are healthy, if his stools are firm and brown, and if he seems to be in overall good health, then the food is doing its job.

Boiled Chicken Gizzards and a Carb

Dogs have sensitive stomachs, especially Yorkies and you should never suddenly change their diet. I found out that everybody has an opinion, Professionals, Amateurs, and “Do Good Nannies”. There is no single answer for proportional breakdown of food that I eat, so having said that I can only tell you what my “D” feeds me and what I like. Every night around 6:00 pm or 6:30 pm I have my main meal of the day. 80 grams of Chicken Gizzards (Yes he weights them), along with this I may have some vegetables and I especially like Carrots, peas and lima beans. (At the time of this writing, I left my carrots on the plate to take a nap; I will however return and finish them later.) I also may have some fruit like a Banana, Apple, or Melon. “D” is very careful not to give me too much or it will upset my stomach (he has experience with this). Of course like most dogs, if “D” is eating a snack on the couch, it is my duty to bug the hell out of him. Occasionally I get a small bite or lick the plate, if it doesn’t contain any hazard foods (read more on this later). My favorite time to bug him is when he has Acme Take out Chicken. I always get a bite or two of that. MMmmmm…

My Favorite Kibble

On the subject of Kibble: after a lot of trial and error, and because I am a very fussy Princess (“D” calls me a Monkey), I found that I like Blue Buffalo Wilderness Duck the best. (This is expensive, but a 5 lb. bag will last me a month and cost about $18.00) My “D” always keeps this in my “Cosmo” Bowl (a very good friend gave this to me and I love it) Kibble is available to me all day long to eat when I am hungry or just want a snack. He says this provides the necessary food supplements that I need and is also good for my teeth. Alright now sit down, I know a lot of you won’t approve, but after all I am his little girl. I am allowed at the Kitchen table, if I behave (and I ALWAYS behave, I’m a good girl). I will occasionally get some Peas or Lima Beans or a Small Piece of Bacon, but every time “D” makes pudding I always get 5 finger tips of “Cool Whip”. I take a running leap into his lap at this point. The Veterinary Doctor frowned at “D” over the Cool Whip, but I just licked her face and she got over it. (Note! It’s about 1 table spoon total and that has 13 calories, and about 1 gram of sugar and 1/2 gram of fat. Commercial Dog treats are worse).

Starchy Vegetables: Veggies such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and winter squashes (including pumpkin), as well as legumes (beans), provide carbohydrate calories that can be helpful in reducing food costs or keeping weight on skinny and very active dogs. Starchy foods must be cooked in order to be digestible by dogs.

Water is important for Hydration

Fresh Water: Fresh water is very important for me and I always have a supply on demand by the TV. Water for drinking is a very important part of your dog’s daily requirements and overall nutrition. Water is the main component of healthy, living cells of the body. Without water, your dog’s body will not be able to function properly. More specifically, your dog will dehydrate. In order for your dog to get enough water daily, you need to provide water along with a healthy, balanced diet which also contains some moisture.

Treats

Some Good Treats

It’s important to understand the treats are just that, “treats”, not Dog Food. Treats come in 2 or three categories, i.e., Healthy Treats, Unhealthy Treats and Unhealthy things to chew on. I almost have a Daily treat routine. When I get up in the morning I trot to the kitchen because while my “D” is making Tea, he usually gives me 2 small treats of the unhealthy variety, while he laughs and watches me waddle away into the living room to eat it before he takes it back. I also get 3 or 4 more throughout the day, but never after my evening meal. Now he might give me healthy treats more often, but not in excess, this is perhaps 5% of my total diet, if that much. If we're going out, I can always count on him having a pocket full of healthy treats to draw upon. I also have a portable water bottle, he brings along too, depending on how long we will be out and the temperature.

Some Not as Good Junk Treats

Now a word about Junk treats, I’ll leave that to your judgment, just don’t be excessive. Everyone likes a little of what they shouldn’t have, from time to time. My “D” likes McDonald's and I have a friend who violently objects to junk treats: “I make my own”, “Don’t give my dog any”, “No, he can’t have those”. Her dog recently passed away at an early age of 6. Then I have another friend who feeds his dog all kinds of junk and table scraps and the dogs belly is on the floor, Obese. He is 14 going on 15 with no issues. It’s like the little old lady who smokes a pack a day and has three beers a night, living to be 95 vs the marathon runner, on all the right foods that drops dead at 27. You are the judge, they all contain enormous amounts of sugar and grain but dogs love them.

** WARNING ** Very Bad things that could do serious harm.

Thing that could Kill

Never give your dog chocolate. It contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic to dogs. Also, don't feed your dog bones that can splinter or that have sharp edges. Large, hard bones such as knuckle and marrow bones are fine, but parboil them to destroy harmful parasites, and take them away from your dog if he starts to actually eat the bone rather than just chew on it. Personally I like a ham bone(from a ham steak), but never feed your dog ham, it’s too salty. (“D” has experience with this after I threw up all night)

Never give your dog Walnuts or Macadamia Nuts! Both are extremely poisonous for pups (a toxin in macadamias can lead to tremors and hind-quarter paralysis). Cashews and peanuts are ok but I never get any of those, and I hate peanut butter. Avoid Grapes and Raisins, which can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Here by no means is a complete list, of other common people foods that should never be given to your dog: avocados, alcohol, baking soda and powder, caffeine, chives, corn cobs, fruit pits and seeds, garlic, (a little garlic powder is ok, but not regular garlic) milk and milk-based products, mushrooms, nutmeg (and other spices), onions, rhubarb leaves, tomatoes (especially stems and leaves), xylitol (found in many candies and gums), and yeast dough.

"My First owner, (I don’t remember him anymore), was an elderly gentleman who had to go into an assisted living home, and they would not let him keep me. So, at an early age of 8 months, I was left on the door step (figuratively speaking), abandoned, of the Cumber County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, In Vineland, New Jersey (CCSPCA). There are some very nice people there, like Robyn and Christine, who are now my Facebook friends, but I found myself Homeless, alone, abandoned, scared and up for adoption. There were rumors running rampant among the other dogs that if someone didn’t adopt me, soon, that I might be gassed and I saw a wall of dead dog memorials at the front entrance on the way in, I didn’t know what to think."

Last month, I went to an open casting call, in Marlton, New Jersey to try to become the new “face of Wiggle-Buttz” and I won the small dog category. Wiggle-Buttz is a new High end Spa and Boutique. The casting call was covered by the Courier Post Newspaper and it was a fun day. You can see some of the other dogs on the Courier Post web site, here. One of the prizes that I won, was a beautiful Pink Dog collar with Pearls and Swarovski Crystals, from their boutique.

My “D” and I went for a photo shoot a few weeks ago and it was really special. The photographer and I had a fun time, while modeling all of the nice clothing available in the Boutique. My Co-winner, Johnny Cash was also there on the day of the photo shoot and represented the larger dogs.

A Day at the Spa

I must say life as a Yorkie, at times, can be just fantastic. My “D” takes me to all the best places and gives me all the nicest things. Several weeks ago I entered a casting call at a new high end pet spa and store that opened in Marlton New Jersey, called Wiggle Buttz. I was so excited to then be chosen, from that casting call, to be the new “Face of Wiggle Buttz”. What that means is I will be on their website and in their advertising and literature. As a reward for being selected, I also received several prizes, i.e. some merchandise and a Spa Day.
They have some very nice facilities and some very nice dog treats, toys, clothes and accessories from all the top designers, like Louis Vuitton, Juicy Couture, Yves Saint Laurent and others. I haven’t decided yet about my prize, because they have so many nice things. At first I thought I liked the Louis Vuitton sneakers, but then I saw this beautiful Pink Suede Collar with Swarovski Crystals and White Pearls, what’s a girl going to do? I will decide on Tuesday when I go for my photo shoot, who knows I might like something that I will model for them.

My “D” and I started out early in the morning to make my Spa appointment on time. Sundays at the Spa are by appointment only. Wiggle Buttz is located at 125 Merchants Way, Marlton New Jersey 08053 (856-267-5198). It was a nice ride on a cool morning. I wore one of my chic pink sweaters so I would make an impression. When we arrived, Veronica, the store owner, spied me right away and came out to greet me. She introduced me to Gabby, who was to be my groomer today and also her mother, who happened to be in the store this morning. She told me I was going to get their “Princess Package” which includes a full day of relaxation. Starting off with a bath, teeth cleaning and nail grinding, followed by a Blueberry Facial and a Paw-di-Cure, which includes getting my nails painted. To finish the spa day right I will be 'pampered' with a 30 minute massage and be sent home with a complimentary Spa Robe. WOW! I really did feel like a princess.

My Spa experience started off, with a stop at the reception desk, where I signed in and was acquainted with the very nice facility, full of state of the art grooming tools and supplies. Everything was decorated for Halloween, my favorite time of year.

Gabby made me feel very welcome and talked to me calmly while I was getting used to a new environment.

Private Room

One thing that I thought was special was the private room, for their clients that wanted a nice facility to bath their animals, on their own, a kind of "do it yourself" room. This would be nice for animals that don't like strangers giving them a bath.

My treatment started off with a little prep, some ear cleaning and a bit of a trim around my "Hoo Haa" parts. Gabby was very gental, but I did protest slightly, only because I was in a strange place. She kept calming me with her voice and eventually I settled in.

We next moved into the was room where, I waited patiently, for my bath to be prepared. I noticed all the nice shampoo's and conditioners on the shelf. I have hair like a human and it needs to be soft and silky. They had the right stuff. I told Gabby that I like my water, tepid and she made sure it was the right temperature. After a wet down, we started with my Blueberry facial, then moved on to a nice shampoo and rinse, followed by a Paw-di-cure soak for my tired paws and dry pads.

On to a blow dry. The spa has several ways to get dry, I didn't like the blow dryer, because it frightened me, so they offer alternative facilities in a nice cage with a gentle air dryer. I still fussed a little but was not as frighten with this method of getting dry.

While I was getting dry, Gabby prepared my special Chicken Toothpaste. After a nice combing and brushing, Veronica helped Gabby get me into my Spa Robe and I was done.

As all of my friends know, I am an adopted little girl dog, from the shelter in Vineland, New Jersey, and I was so excited, to have been selected to be one of twelve dogs chosen to be a finalist in the 4^th Annual Cumberland County SPCA, 2012 “Dog of the Year” fund raiser campaign, which has now ended.

It’s been a long and hard 6 months of fund raising and vote soliciting and now its over, including the waiting. I was hoping to become this year’s CCSPCA “Dog of the Year”, but after all my efforts did not make it. The Fund Raiser was on going since April of this year, throughout South Jersey. The first event was at Parvin State Park on Sunday April 29th.with their Pet Walk. It was concluded on Saturday September 29, 2012 with the Winning Announcement at 1:00pm during a reception at the Vineland SPCA. I was sponsored by “Bobs Little SportShop” in Glassboro, New Jersey.

My photo, as well as my sponsor, was on donation boxes, the CCSPCA website, at 25 of the SPCA Events on a voting stand, Selected Schools in Cumberland County, at their main building in Vineland, NJ, and in their newsletter to over 5000 subscribers. My D and I personally manned and dogged the Donation board at the Buena Independence Day Celebration on July 7, 2012 and also made a personal appearance at some of the other events. The winner will get to be their ‘Dog of the Year”, with their photo on the "Dog of the Year" wall plaque, as well as be in a parade and will receive a $300 gift certificate. I gave all the details of how and where to vote, as well as the locations of the donation boxes, on my social pages, twitter and website as I got them. This, of course, was a fund raiser and votes were tallied by your donations to the CCSPCA. The winning Dog was the one who obtained the most donations and 100% of those donation will go to the care of rescue animals. The CCSPCA had voting links on their website where they accepted your credit cards. A record amount was obtained in excess of $29,000.

My Second Birthday

Hi everybody, can you believe another year has gone by and today I am 2 years old. I had a really great day. Woke up early and chased the squirrels off the porch into their tree. My D made me a really good lobster shaped cake for my birthday and I got a lot of presents. I got a Lady Ga Ga shirt, so now I am one of her little monsters. I also got a Charlie Chick, a Happy Napper Billy Bear and a nice name plate for my toy box.

He also let me play all day with my Noisy Rubber Chicken, Alfred. I only get to play with him once in a while, because D says I drive him crazy, but he is my favorite toy. Thanks everyone for all of the nice things you said and birthday the wishes on Facebook. I had a really great Birthday and Party.

My Lobster Shaped Birthday Cake

I thought you all might be interested so I asked my D to tell me the recipe for my cake, in case you might want to make your Doggie one. Here it is:

Recipe:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 cup smashed Banana

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 cup shredded carrots

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/3 cup honey

1 egg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)

Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a ring mold sprayed with a nonstick spray for 40 minutes.

Cinnamon Frosting:

Combine the following ingredients and blend thoroughly:

12 ounces nonfat cream cheese (room temperature)

3 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon honey

Nice beach (No Dogs on Beach)

Parvin State Park, on the edge of the Pine Barrens, in Pittsgrove Township, near Centerton, New Jersey, was the site for the Annual CCSPCA Pet Walk, on Sunday April 29th. This was originally scheduled for Sunday April 22, but that date was rained out. Parvin State Park, has a very nice lake and provides camping sites as well as facilities for swimming and picnicking. It has been used in the past as a home for the Civilian Conservation Corps, a camp for displaced Japanese children and even a Prisoner of War camp for German prisoners in 1944. Today it is for recreational enjoyment. When I was there it seemed they were putting down new sand for the beach.

There was a very nice turnout for the Pet Walk and I had the chance to meet lots of nice people and their dogs. It was also a chance to meet my competition in the “Dog of the Year” fundraiser. I think my biggest competition is going to be a dog named “Webby”, I guess I kind of challenged him when we met and his daddy is all fired up to greater heights. Now I really need your vote. My “D” says “bring it on”. There were prizes and refreshments at the park and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I was passing out kisses to entice votes. My “D” even got a massage. (There was a nice lady giving massages for donations)

During the event my “D” picked up some donation boxes and spent Monday distributing them to the businesses, who were willing to display them on their counter tops. “Great day today for the Dog of the Year board! Despite the grey clouds, there were a lot of "voters" at Bayfest in Somers Point. The event had a nice turn out and the dog's photographs drew a lot of attention. A big thank you to David and Alexandra Farber for manning the board for us. Hope to see many of you at our CCSPCA Step for a Pet Petwalk at Parvin's State Park from 10am to 2pm tomorrow, April 29th.”

Hazel, who you see in the accompanying photo, is also a former rescue dog, but she is not part of this year’s contest. Hazel graciously sat, for photos, by the “Dog of the Year” board for a while. Hazel accompanied her mom for the setup and take down today because her Mom, Karen is responsible for this year’s contest. If you look close you can see my photo, in the center row, far left. Tomorrow we pick up our donation boxes and a list of future events. I entered one of the contests and what do you think? I won a First Place Blue Ribbon for "Prettiest Pooch". I had a chance to meet Elwood "The worlds Ugliest dog, He lives in Sewell, New Jersey and his Mom was one of the judges. Actually I though he was kind of cute.

On Monday, April 23rd the Dog of the Year display was visiting, Sabater Elementary School in Vineland. They did a short assembly explaining to the children what the SPCA is and introducing the Dog of the Year contest. The display was then left in the lobby for one week so the children and staff could vote for their favorites.

The Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CCSPCA) was founded in 1891 and incorporated in June 1947, as a non-profit organization and a chapter of the NJState SPCA. The staff and board of trustees are deeply involved and committed to all aspects of animal care and welfare. The money to finance the shelter comes from fees charged to municipalities to house their stray animals, fees charged to adopt, reclaim or release an animal to them, dues, donations, grants, fund-raisers and bequests from caring individuals.

My Good Friend Robyn

All of the Employees and Volunteers are really nice. They go out of their way to be friendly and take good care of the animals that have to live in the Shelter. My good friends Robyn and Christine took really good care of me for the short while I had to live at the Shelter. Robyn handled my adoption and introduced me to my "D". If you have the room and want an animal to share your home with you, here is how you can adopt.

In their function as a humane society, the shelter serves as a refuge for thousands of stray, unwanted, abused, abandoned and sick animals. The CCSPCA is the only law enforcement agency authorized solely for the protection of animals. Each year their cruelty agents investigate nearly 1,000 reports of animal abuse and neglect. Many times they can stop abuse through education; however, other cases require prosecuting the guilty parties. Each year the humane education programs, offered free to schools and community groups, reach thousands, teaching basic pet care, safety and the understanding that all living creatures deserve our respect.

Each year their clinic provides the general public and thousands of animal’s access to their low-cost spay and neuter services. In addition to sheltering and protecting animals, the shelter also acts as a clearinghouse for the thousands of phone calls requesting information on animal related issues and problems.

The Tiniest World War II Heroine

Was a Yorkshire Terrier Named Smoky

I located this touching story on the internet and thought I would make it my first blog of the new year. I hope you enjoy it as I did….Dolly

Found in an abandoned foxhole in New Guinea in 1944 during World War II, a tiny Yorkshire Terrier would become a decorated war heroine. Topping the scales at four pounds, Smoky the Yorkie was tiny in body but large in spirit. Bill Wynne, the American soldier who bought Smoky for two pounds Australian ($6.44 American), opened his heart to the little dog. A bond of love and trust quickly developed between the two as Smoky also stole the hearts of many other military men serving with Bill Wynne. Soon after becoming the mascot for SWPA's 26th Recon Squadron, Smoky won "Yank Down Under" magazine's first prize in their 1944 mascot contest.

For the next two years, Smoky back-packed through the rest of the war and accompanied Wynne on combat flights in the Pacific She faced adverse circumstances, living in the New Guinea jungle and Rock Islands, suffering the primitive conditions of tents in equatorial heat and humidity.

Throughout her service, Smoky slept in Wynne's tent on a blanket made from a green felt card table cover; she shared Wynne's C-rations and an occasional can of Spam. Unlike the “official” war dogs of World War II, Smoky had neither medical care nor a balanced diet formulated especially for dogs. In spite of this, Smoky was never ill. She even ran on coral for four months without developing any of the paw ailments that plagued some war dogs.

"Smoky Served in the South Pacific with the 5^th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron and flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions." On those flights, Smoky spent long hours dangling in a soldier's pack near machine guns used to ward off enemy fighters. Smoky was credited with twelve combat and awarded eight battle stars. She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon at Okinawa. Smoky even parachuted from 30 feet in the air, out of a tree, using a parachute made just for her. Wynne credited Smoky with saving his life by warning him of incoming shells on an LST (transport ship), calling her an "angel from a foxhole." As the ship deck was booming and vibrating from anti-aircraft gunnery, Smoky guided Wynne to duck the fire that hit 8 men standing next to them.

Her status as mascot was soon elevated to that of War Dog and Heroine. Smoky was called upon to serve her country in a most unusual way and in a feat of sheer bravery, she rose to the challenge. During the Luzon invasion, after surviving an air-sea kamikaze attack, Corporal Bill Wynne's ship struck ground. With his barracks bag over one shoulder, his weapon in one hand and tiny Smoky tucked under his arm, he set out in waist-deep water toward shore, 40 feet away. What a sight this must have been - soldiers under enemy attack wading to shore, and a tiny Yorkshire Terrier going with them! After U.S. troops captured the first airfield on Luzon, they had to establish vital communication. Telephone lines needed to be run under a 70' airstrip. To dig up the taxi runway, bury the lines, and repair the runway, fighter planes would have to be relocated. P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings, and P-761 Black Widow Night Fighters would not be able to use the landing strip during this operation, and would be exposed to enemy attack. When an 8" diameter drainage culvert under the airstrip was located, Corporal Wynne was summoned. Did he think Smoky would crawl through the culvert, with the communications line attached to her collar?

Wynne asked for, and received, a promise - if Smoky got stuck, the crew would dig down and rescue her. Where some sections of the culvert were joined, sand had sifted down to fill the pipe with only 3"-4" clearance. Could she do it? Corporal Wynne lay on his stomach peering into one end of the culvert while his buddies held Smoky at the other end. He called for Smoky but she hesitated. He called again, "Come, Smoky; come on, baby, come on." Sure enough, his little "baby" started making her way through that dark culvert. She trusted Corporal Wynne with her life. When she was close to the other end, she started running and burst through the pipe into Wynne's arms amid cheers and "atta girls"! The communications officer proclaimed that Smoky would have steak from the mess hall that night, and sure enough she did. Smoky's special mission in the combat area of the Lingayen Gulf on Luzon resulted in teletype and phone lines being activated for the U.S. and Allied forces. She could not have accomplished this without her love and devotion to Corporal Wynne, and her complete trust in him.

After surviving kamikaze attacks, the Luzon invasion, typhoons, a sting from a 6" jungle centipede, and many other challenges, Smoky now faced being left behind as U.S. troops headed home after the war. Army regulations stated that "no dog or mascot will go back to the U.S. on a War Department ship". Implementing his "concealment plan", Corporal Wynne and Smoky boarded the USS General Wm. H. Gordon together. The little dog he could not leave behind was smuggled aboard ship in an oxygen-mask carrying case, heading to her new home in the United States.

Smoky is also the first documented therapy dog, having served the troops in countless military hospitals. As Bill Wynne writes in his book "Yorkie Doodle Dandy", Smoky's "very presence unfailingly turned serious faces into smiles." "Sometimes under stress it only takes a delightful moment of diversion" to lead someone away "from the path heading for mental disaster." "My Yorkie Doodle Dandy could make Americans at war forget their troubles simply by watching her chase giant butterflies..."

The little dog he could not leave behind served him faithfully for 13 years, until her death in 1957. On February 21, 1957, "Corporal" Smoky died unexpectedly at the approximate age of 14. Wynne and his family buried Smoky in a World War II .30 Caliber Ammo Box in the Cleveland Metroparks, Rocky River Reservation in Lakewood, Ohio.

Nearly 50 years later, on Veterans Day, November 11, 2005, a bronze life-size sculpture of Smoky sitting in a GI helmet, atop a two-ton blue granite base, was unveiled there. It is placed above the very spot that Smoky was laid at her final resting place. This very special monument is dedicated to “Smoky, the Yorkie Doodle Dandy, and the Dogs of All Wars.

On the Subject of: Black and White

Look into my eyes, listen only to the sound of my Bark

Not everything in the world is in Color, and on the other hand not everything is black and white either, physically or metaphorically. It has been said that some people look through rose colored glasses and others only see what they want to see, but the burning question today is “Do Dogs only see in Black and white?” I am going to shed a little light on this curious subject (no pun intended).

Ok, humans, sit down for this answer: Contrary to popular belief dogs do see color and not just shades of grey. Now I know that all of you dog owners, out there, have just fainted, another myth bites the dust, so let me clarify. Dogs are colorblind, but that does not mean they do not see any color any more than a human that is color bind, only sees in black and white. It is a common misunderstanding. I can see color but not as rich or as many as you do.

My family Heritage originates in Yorkshire, England and they probably studied next to their masters at Oxford University, a little farther south. I guess that’s where I get my smarts so I will attempt to explain, without a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo.

Anatomy of a dogs eye

In the retina of the eye of both humans and dogs there are special light sensitive cells call “Rods” and “Cones”. No, silly not fishing rods and Ice Cream Cones but special living cells. Rods are responsible for low light vision and Cones are sensitive to color. There are 3 different types of cones that are sensitive to the short, medium and long wave lengths of light and therefore color. I have fewer cones than a human which suggests my vision is not as good as humans, and that I don’t have the rich range of color that you do. The thing with color is not just cones but the different types of cones each tuned to different wavelengths of light. Human colorblindness comes about because the person is missing one of the three kinds of cones. With only two cones, the individual can still see colors, but not as many as someone with normal color vision. Dogs also have only two kinds of cones, so their vision, also, is not as vibrant.

Dogs see better in the dark than humans, partly because a dog's retina is dominated by rods which are sensitive to low light, and partly because of the tapetum lucidum ( this word comes from the human language called Latin and it means "bright tapestry") which lies underneath the rod cells and reflects "concentrated" light back through them. This is a help to wild dogs who are likely to be hunting in poor lighting conditions. As an additional aid to hunting, dogs are particularly sensitive to seeing movement in the distance. They perceive stationary objects relatively poorly, though, which makes some seem clumsy.

Something very interesting is that a lot of popular colors for dog toys are red or orange. However red is very difficult for a dog to see. It probably appears to be very dark brown or gray or maybe even black. When you toss that ball in the grass and your dog runs past the toy you just tossed she might not be able to see the difference between the ball and the grass and it is not because she is stupid or stubborn. It’s your fault human for choosing a toy with a color that is hard to tell the difference on your lawn.

My First Birthday

Hello Everyone, Today September 6, 2011 is my First Birthday. I woke up early and put on my best “100% loved by Everybody” Hoodie. It was raining outside so I had to play on the front porch, instead of my usual walk.

I want to thank everyone for giving me such a nice day. I received a lot of birthday wishes on my facebook page

Birthdays are special and my “D” even made me a birthday cake and some Orange Sherbet Ice Cream. I ask him to let me post the recipe, for my cake, on my blog, so for those of you who are interested; here is the recipe for my Birthday Cake.

Peanut Butter Carrot Cake

1 cup Whole Wheat flour
1tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp. Banana Extract
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Mix flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8" round cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool. Puree cottage cheese in blender for icing. Decorate with more peanut butter and carrots. Reserve some of the Puree and add food coloring to decorate a name.

I also got to unwrap a present. Inside 2 boxes all wrapped up were some of my favorite treats. It was great fun tearing open the wrapping and the boxes. I made sure all the neighborhood dog friends got a piece of my cake too. Then I got to play some with my zoo zoo pet chipmunk.

Washington Lake Park

I had a great time yesterday at Washington Lake Park. After a brunch at my favorite outdoor bistro, Barbara Anne’s in Clayton, New Jersey, my “D” surprised me with a visit. My birthday is tomorrow and he wanted me to be sure and have a good time with some friends to mark the special day, as he would not be able to take me on Tuesday. I think the park is really special and there are several acres fenced that I can safely play, off of my leash. The Dog Park is completely fenced and I can run freely without danger. There are two sections divided off; one for dogs over 30 pounds and one for dogs under 30 pounds, of course at 6 pounds 8 ounce I qualify for the later, even though I wanted to romp with the larger dogs. The park also supplies ample water and bowls as well as poop bags to keep the park clean. There are plenty of trees that shade from the hot sun and benches for my “D” to sit on while I play. Some of the nice people have also left toys in the park, like balls. I knew there was a reason why I put on my “Homerun Diggers” “T” shirt.

There are too few dog parks that are fenced and it’s a bit of a trip from where I live in Franklin Township, but my “D” loves me and always goes out of his way. At first I was disappointed as there were no other dogs at the park, that were my size, but then, I heard the front gate clink and Ashley showed up. Now I knew I was going to have a good time. We explored half the park play area together.

The next to arrive was Nola. Nola, was limping, because a big Labrador Retriever accidently, fell on her leg and broke it. She was just out of the splints and I helped her exercise her leg, but she quickly tired and all of my efforts to excite her failed.

Just then Woody and Puzzle showed up and the romp was on again.

After a while a young couple showed up with their little girl and dog Mia. Mia was on a leash as her parents were hesitant to let her run free. I would find out why later, because we got into a bit of a snit, she was not very sociable at all. I understood because she was a rescue dog who had not been treated very nicely in the past. I let her anti social behavior slide this time.

Then it happened, another Yorkshire Terrier at the gate, wow. His name was Chaz and he was only 6 month old. What a cutie! We immediately hit it off and I shared my water with him.

I explained to young Chaz that Mia was not very sociable and it was best to leave her alone.

The group all agreed that Mia needed better manners, but I explained that she was trying, and just give her a little space.

Puzzle, Woody, Mia and I say goodby to Ashley. I hope she comes back soon.

We all played for a couple of hours and then it was time to go home and besides, everyone else was leaving too. I had a great day and a lot of exercise.

It had been a long day and I Boinked ( I don't snore, I Boink) in my dreams.

As soon as I got home I conked out.
