There’s another surprise coming in the Dolphins secondary. By now, you know that Will Allen has been placed on injured reserve, even though he was targeting a return for the Sept. 26 game against the Jets, and maybe even Sept. 19 against the Vikings if the team deemed that necessary. But here’s something else on the horizon: Sean Smith, who started all 16 games at cornerback as a Dolphins rookie, is not in line to start the season opener. According to two sources, fifth-year man Jason Allen has been penciled in as the starting cornerback in place of Smith, and Smith was made aware of that decision over the weekend. Vontae Davis will start at the other perimeter cornerback, and Benny Sapp will serve as the nickel back, with Nolan Carroll also available.

The rest of the players to get cut were safeties Nate Ness, and Jonathan Amaya, fullback Rolly Lumbala, cornerback Ross Weaver, lineman Ray Feinga, and linebacker Chris McCoy.

The notable players of the group, Ness and Amaya could make it back onto the practice squad after all is said and done.

Ness has flashed his brilliant cover skills at times, but because of his inconsistency, that he was cut from the team.

All of the others were expected to be cut, and simply did nothing to help their cause.

Just because the Fins have announced their final roster, this does not mean that it is final as of yet. The Dolphins are still free to make trades and claim players off waivers.

So stay tuned for any other roster moves that may happen tonight or tomorrow.

The only rational way that I can think of as to why the Fins would cut him is so that they do not have to pay him any guaranteed money. Or, perhaps they are looking to trade for another tight end, or found one that they want to poach off the waiver wire.

Either way, the Fins love to run a lot of two tight end sets, especially when they are in the red-zone, so look for them to sign another tight end that can stretch the field, because I’m not convinced that the Dolphins will stick with John Nalbone as their main backup.

This is a big blow to the tight end unit, because now we only have one tight end capable of playing at a high level. John Nalbone will now be the backup.

Armando Salguero is also reporting that tackle Lydon Murtha has made the team. Murtha provides quality depth as a backup tackle, and while he is nowhere near the level of play of Jake Long and Vernon Carey, he is dependable in most situations.

Salguero also says that the Fins are in the market for a defensive end, as Marques Douglas, or Charles Grant will not be with the team come Monday. This could mean that both of them will be gone, or one of the other. My guess is Grant will be gone, but they could use him as a veteran presence who can get to the quarterback.

None of this is official yet, but when it is, it will be here first. Stay tuned.

Folsum will not be back on the team, reports are saying because he does not fit in with defensive coordinator, Mike Nolan’s scheme.

The team is hoping that both Pruitt and Baker clear waivers and can be placed back on their practice squad.

That is exactly what the team did moments ago, as Hobbs’ services are no longer needed on the team.

The team has cut 11 players so far, which means they have nine more players to terminate from the roster. Stay tuned!

In a matter of minutes the Dolphins have released Pat White, and now versatile offensive lineman, Andrew Gardner.

Gardner looked putrid during the pre-season, and the only shocker here was that he was not chopped off the block sooner.

Former 2nd round pick Pat White has been cut by the team according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.

White has not proven at all that he can make any worthwhile contributions to the team, and that he has the physical traits to not be an injury prone player in the league either.

This move was inevitable for the Fins, and by cutting White so early in the day, the team obviously could not find a trading partner for White.

Spitler was competing with veteran J.D. Folsum and fellow rookie Micah Johnson.

Dotson will hope to make the practice squad, and the Dolphins may hope to have him clear waivers so the team can pick him up again.
