Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that free agent fullback Ovie Mughelli will fly to Miami tonight and visit the Dolphins on Thursday.

Mughelli, who turns 32 next month, was a Pro Bowl lead blocker in front of Michael Turner with the Falcons in 2010. He missed most of last season with a torn right MCL.

Mughelli was released by Atlanta on May 8 in a move that cleared $3 million worth of salary off the Falcons’ books. The Dolphins don’t have a true lead-blocking fullback on their current roster.

He played left tackle at Indiana University and was a starter for the last 23 games. He took part in the Dolphins rookie minicamp, and wore number 75.

“Andrew’s hard work paid off in the workout setting during our recent rookie orientation,” said Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. “As a player invited to tryout, he approached the minicamp with the right frame of mind and Andrew’s work ethic was evident throughout all of the practices.”

The Dolphins made a big move for the future on Sunday, as the team and linebacker Cameron Wake confirmed a deal that will extend his deal by four years at $49 million, including $20 million guaranteed.

The Dolphins later confirmed the deal via their official Twitter feed and said the extension runs the 2016 season, but they didn’t reveal financial terms.

“We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with Cam and his agent, Paul Sheehy to extend Cam’s contract,” Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said in statement released by the team. “Cam has been a productive player ever since he joined the Dolphins, and has been a great teammate and an outstanding citizen. His work ethic and professionalism on the field and in the locker room has made him a leader by example. We also appreciate all the community activities he has done.

“We always try to reward our own players for their contributions to the team and Cam certainly deserves that recognition. I want to thank Cam and Paul for their hard work in getting this extension done.”

The linebacker wasn’t happy with his current deal, and showed it by not showing up to the beginning of the Fins voluntary offseason workout program. He was scheduled to earn $615,000 in the final year of a four-year deal.

In 3 seasons in the NFL after coming from Canada, Wake has put up 28 sacks, and also was named to the Pro Bowl in 2010.

The Dolphins have released a statement on the passing of former LB Juior Seau.

“We are stunned and saddened at the passing of Junior Seau. During his time with the Dolphins he made a unique contribution to the team and the South Florida community.

“Junior was a fierce competitor whose passion and work ethic lifted his teammates to greater heights. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious and he passed that on to everyone who was around him. He loved the game so much, and no one played with more sheer joy.

“Beyond his accomplishments on the field, though, he was as well known for his charitable accomplishments to help those less fortunate than himself, especially kids. Whether it was in San Diego, South Florida, New England or everywhere else in between, Junior loved putting a smile on a child’s face during his “Shop with a Jock” program or during one of his countless school visits. He made a difference to so many people in so many places.

“Junior was one-of-a-kind. The league will never see anyone like him again. He will be missed, and on behalf of the Miami Dolphins we want to extend our condolences to his family.”

In yet another tragic tale, former Chargers and Pats star linebacker Junior Seau was found shot to death at his home Wednesday morning in what police said appeared to be a suicide.

Seau, who leaves behind three kids and a wife, was just 43.

Police Chief Frank McCoy said Seau’s girlfriend reported finding him unconscious with a gunshot wound to the chest and lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. A gun was found near him, McCoy said.

Seau’s mother appeared before reporters, weeping uncontrollably.

“I don’t understand … I’m shocked,” Luisa Seau cried out.

Her son gave no indication of a problem when she spoke to him by phone earlier this week, she said.

“He’s joking to me, he called me a ‘homegirl,’” she said.

Seau was a standout linebacker with the University of Southern California before going to the Chargers, whom he led to the Super Bowl following the 1994 season.

“Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now. We ask everyone to stop what they’re doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family,” the team said in a statement.

Seau’s death follows the suicide last year of former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson, who also shot himself in the chest.

Seau remained with the Chargers until 2003 and went on to play with the Dolphins and Patriots before retiring after the 2009 season.

In October 2010, Seau survived a 100-foot plunge down a seaside cliff in his SUV, hours after he was arrested for investigation of domestic violence at the Oceanside home he shared with his girlfriend. The woman had told authorities that Seau assaulted her during an argument.

There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol involved in the crash and Seau told authorities he fell asleep while driving. He sustained minor injuries.

Seau spent parts of 20 seasons in the NFL, including his 1990-2002 stint with his hometown Chargers. He helped them to their only Super Bowl appearance, was voted to a team-record 12 straight Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro six times.

He amassed 545 tackles, 56½ sacks and 18 interceptions in his career.

“Twenty years, to be part of this kind of fraternity, to be able to go out and play the game that you love, and all the lessons and the friends and acquaintances which you meet along the way, you can’t be in a better arena,” Seau said last August after the Chargers announced he would be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.

Seau was the fifth pick overall in the 1990 draft out of Southern California, and stayed with the Charges until being traded to the Dolphins. He came out of retirement a few times to play with the Patriots in search of a Super Bowl ring and was with the team when they lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl following the 2007 season, which ended New England’s quest for a perfect season.

The Dolphins have been looking for a long time for their next signal caller, and now they have him as they have picked Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill with the 8th overall pick in the NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-4, 221-pound Tannehill began his college career as a quarterback, but was moved to wide receiver, catching 112 passes for 1,596 yards and 10 touchdowns before moving back to quarterback on a full-time basis in 2010. Tannehill assumed the starting job midway through his junior season and passed for 5,450 yards with 42 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over his last 20 games in former Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman’s West Coast offense.

Primarily fueled by Miami’s hiring of Sherman for their offensive coordinator vacancy, the quarterback-needy Dolphins have been linked to Tannehill throughout the draft process. That chatter has only increased as the Dolphins swung from the heels and missed on free agent targets Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn and Alex Smith before adding David Garrard to compete with Matt Moore for the starting job.

That competition may still be on as Tannehill could sit a season before he’s ready to start at the NFL level.

Here’s a scouting report on Tannehill:

The NFL has moved the Dolphins home-opener against the Oakland Raiders to a 1 p.m. kickoff per Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

When the NFL schedule was released earlier this week, the Sept. 16 game against the Raiders was the only home contest on the schedule that started at 4:15 p.m.

But to accommodate the start of Rosh Hashana, a Jewish holiday that celebrates the New Year, the league moved kickoff to 1 p.m.

The schedule change means every Dolphins home game in 2012 will kickoff at 1 p.m., allowing the Dolphins an opportunity to take advantage of South Florida’s heat and humidity, which could provide a competitive advantage.
