What a difference a year makes

This time last year I didn't even own a bike, let alone know how to swim competitively. Now I'm getting ready to travel to Mexico to compete in the Cozumel Ironman on Sunday! 2.4 Mile Swim, 112 Mile Bike, 26.2 Run... What a difference a year makes!

Out of nowhere this tune hit me this afternoon... I like it so much I had to post it online so I can remember it!

Made me start reflecting and looking at two pictures of my Mother that hang above my desk. For a second I caught myself. I've promised myself to look at her pictures more often now.

Exciting Days

It has been some of the most exciting couple of days of my life. I just had to take a step back to take it all in!

In the last 48 hours I've booked a flight to Cancun/Cozumel for Thanksgiving and to compete in the Ironman, I've booked a flight from Liverpool to Dublin for New Years Eve and now this morning I've booked a direct flight from Orlando to Manchester for Christmas!!!

Can't wait!

Great Day Today

Today was AWESOME! And here's why: I finally feel back on track!

Its hard to explain because on the surface everything is going really well, but there's a couple of things in my life I haven't been 100% happy with. This time last year I was flying... I spent 10 weeks in a row traveling to some of the best places I possibly could. I completed my first marathon, went to the US Tennis Open, Austin City Limits, went back home to England, Napa Valley Winetasting - you name it, I was there.

This year I've deliberately slowed down and while October had highlights with the Chicago Marathon, Paul Oakenfold and two great weekends watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there was something missing.

Today I think I figured it out: my fitness level. Since May of this year, I've struggled to maintain a steady, consistent and persistent workout schedule.

Swimming has been inconsistent, cycling intermittent and running came to a halt when I injured my IT band in July.

Today though I met with Triathlete coach Hank Campbell and it was a revelation! In 2 hours he's completely reformed my swim technique, set me up with an indoor bike trainer to increase my weekly mileage and set me up for the rest of the week.

I was so pleased I hired him as my personal coach for the Cozumel Ironman.

The best part about having clear fitness goals though is that its contagious. I've spent the rest of tonight looking at the 100 goals I set in 2010 to complete in 1001 days.

Im energized again! And it feels great!

Octoberfest Challenge at Al Lang Stadium

We've been given a special offer to play on the same pitch as the Tampa Rowdies, prior to their first Playoff game this Saturday!

That's right, we're the warm-up game before the Rowdies take the pitch!

Here is a timeline of events:

2:15 pm- The Three Lions arrive at the stadium to play football on the Al Lang Stadium pitch. We will have the field set up like it is for the FC Tampa Bay matches.

2:30pm- The Lions will take the field and will play until 3:45 pm. Water will be provided for all the guys playing. Everyone must be over the age of 18 and sign the attached waiver in order to play.

4:00pm- The October Challenge players will be able to shower and change in the locker rooms. Everyone must be out of the locker rooms by 4:30 pm. Towels will not be provided so everyone must bring their own with them.

4:30pm- We move to the parking lot for the "Tailgate Party". Everyone will need to be out of the stadium. No one will be able to re-enter until the gates open at 6:30 pm.

6:30pm- The Octoberfest Challenge members will have access to the Budweiser VIP Tents on the field.

Hard to think this month is nearly over!

Not only did I celebrate my birthday this month, but I also traveled to South America and trekked an ancient trail to discover Ciudad Perdida - the "Lost City" of Colombia.

Apart from a fiasco getting back (I got stranded in Miami overnight but did get a free international ticket with Avianca as compensation) it was a fantastic trip!

Also this month I helped to raise almost $2,000 for Polycystic Kidney Disease at my birthday party at Mangroves and also got to party with Paulo Mojo and Pedro M.

Other acheivements this month included completing the 100 Mile Charity Bike Race Miles for Moffitt and also watching the Bucs beat the Falcons at Raymond James last weekend.

Coming up next month: The 3 Lions selected to open for FC Tampa Bay this weekend and I'm competing in The Chicago Marathon the weekend after. Also Halloween is coming up!

Day Zero is Nigh!

I can't believe we're almost at the end of August! The year is flying by which makes reassessing and reevaluating all the goals we set at the start of the year even more important. Next week there will be just 120 days left and while the feeling that time is running out may strike first, the most important feeling should be that there is still time!

I'm currently reviewing the list of goals I set at the start of the year and right now the ones I'm closest to achieving are:

Complete Ironman Cozumel 2011 (November 27!)
Visit John and Mums resting each year (December)

Summertime in the Sunshine State

Summer ends next week and I can't wait to upload all the pictures... This is literally one of the first taken the first week from June... Some amazing times in Florida from St Augustine to Vero Beach back to Orlando and of course Tampa Bay area, not to mention San Francisco, Long Beach, San Diego, Austin, NYC (for a cocktail) and two trips to Kansas City...

As many of you know I lost my camera on the way to San Diego which had all the pictures from KC trip one too. The second trip to KC I didnt take a camera for the very fear of losing one lol!

What's left is pictures from Florida and hopefully one day Ill get around to posting them all here!

My First True HDR Photograph

I've wanted to create HDR photographs for a long time but have neither had the technology or the software.

I finally upgraded my camera to a Canon T2i and upgraded my photoshop to CS5.1 tonight and this is the result.

As you can see I wanted to go OTT for my first attempt but watch this space for more subtle postings in the future.

Vertical Ventures Indoor Rock Climbing

Vertical Ventures is Florida's first and Tampa's premier indoor rock climbing gym, providing a training environment for climbers of all skill levels.

A group of us went there for the first time back in July with the Tampa Adventure Group and now we're hooked!

We went back again today and had a great time. The best part is that if you go with T.A.G you get your second visit free, so today all I paid was $9 for equipment rental.

Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in learning. TAG meet there the first Sunday of every month.

Clearing out the Clutter

Ive not had a full weekend in Tampa since the middle of June, so I took full advantage today and had a massive clearout.

I feel so much better! I went through about 3 years of stuff that has gradually accumulated with me on my travels and the were some amazing things I rediscovered:

1. A letter from my mother dated March 8th 2006 - the last time she ever wrote to me
2. Johns autopsy report - a lot easier to report now time has passed
3. An awesome letter from my Dad in 2008 thanking me for a fantastic two-week stay that included a weeks skiing in Colorado
4. A truly thought-provoking letter from Thailand
5. A nice card from Rio
6. A nice card from The Grand Canyon
7. Old newspaper articles

There were other things too and the best part was that I had the luxury of reflecting on everything as I went through to determine what to keep (personal and meaningful artifacts) and what to throw out (old bank statements, phone bills and gerneral clutter).

I feel so much better! The next goal now I have my place fully clutter free and organised is to do the same at the office in work!

As Michael B. Kitson once wrote, "When you have cleared all of your clutter, you can be of greater service to those around you. "

This movie is AWESOME! It's very rare for a movie to have such an impact on me, but it literally grabbed me by the horns and had me kicking ass at work all week.

Tampa Bay Aquatic Masters

Swimming has been a constant struggle for me. Not only is it my weakest discipline for triathlons but getting group coaching and training usually means getting up at 4am in the morning.

Tonight though I met with Tampa Bay Aquatic Masters who train Monday and Wednesdays at 6:30pm for 2 hours and Thursdays for one hour. I'm such a night owl that this could actually work!

Im really excited. I'm running out of time getting up to 2.4 Miles (at pace) for my Ironman in November. If I can incorporate this training 3 times a week and swim in open water on Saturdays though then I should be covering that distance in no time!
