The UK music press was unanimous in its praise of the ANDREUS album: ‘The return of Chicago soul with a conscience. Curtis would be proud’ – ECHOES

Key cuts include the the laid-back mid-tempo soulful single “Mississippi”, as well as the soulful grooves “Hey Young World” and “Mary Ann”, and the string-laden “Get Somethin’” and “Hustla’s Theme” (the latter sounding like it came straight from a Seventies blaxploitation movie).

In terms of current urban music artists, there is a hint of D’Angelo and Maxwell about Andreus’ style, and the reggae cut “Sweet Land” confirms his long-standing love of Bob Marley’s music.

New York singer-songwriter-producer ANGELA JOHNSON excels on her first all-star ‘producer’ album, featuring a truly stunning guest line-up including Eric Roberson, Rahsaan Patterson, Maysa, Gordon Chambers, Julie Dexter, Marlon Saunders and Frank McComb.

Although she has two Dome albums to her name as a vocalist and musician, this album elevates Angela Johnson to another level, showcasing her skills as a producer and as a string and horn arranger. Titled ‘A Woman’s Touch Vol 1’, it’s released on CD (Dome CD 91) and as a download via iTunes.

There are so many stand-out tracks, notably the Eric Roberson house track ‘Let Me Know’ and Frank McComb’s undeniably hooky ‘Play’, as well as Maysa’s ‘More Than You Know’, Rahsaan Patterson’s ‘Dream Flight’ and ‘Here I Stand’ featuring Claude McKnight of vocal group Take 6.

Other excellent guests include Gordon Chambers with the chugging stepper ‘Get Away’, Marlon Saunders & Lenora Jaye (the sublime ‘Wait On A Maybe’) and Julie Dexter, who shines on ‘How Sweet Life Is’.

The last song on the album ‘Amal’ features Ernesto Abreu, who was a founder member of Cooly’s Hot Box, the New York band with whom Angela began her career in the Nineties.

The UK’s Manifesto magazine writes: “The album has everything really, with so many stand-outs….At all costs – DON’T MISS THIS ALBUM” – need we say more?

After making a major impact with her debut solo album ‘They Don’t Know’, New Yorker ANGELA JOHNSON returns with an equally strong second album ‘Got To Let It Go’, which Angela has once again written, arranged and produced.

A musical career that began at the State University of New York, where she studied as a violin major. It was there that four music students formed a band which evolved into Cooly’s Hot Box, who have since released two albums fronted by Angela’s vocals.

The new album sees Angela in more up-tempo, funky mood than on her more introspective, ballad-oriented debut. Several of the cuts, notably “Whatever It Takes”, “Where’s The Love” and “Early Bird”, with horns to the fore, have a distinctly UK jazz funk flavour, while the hypnotic groove of “All I Need”, the lead single, will fill plenty of dancefloors.

After several years as lead singer with New York band Cooly’s Hot Box, ANGELA JOHNSON gets to step centre stage and release her debut solo album “They Don’t Know”.

A classically trained violinist and fine keyboard player, Angela has also written, arranged and produced the entire album with the exception of three cuts, one of which, “Money Don’t Grow On Trees”, is produced by close musical associate DJ Spinna.

After years of touring with such acts as BB King, the Neville Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and India Arie, Angela is ready to make her debut as a solo artist, although she stresses that she has no plans to leave the Cooly’s line-up on a permanent basis.

“People like Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott are very important to female musicians because they have proved we can do it as well as the men. When people hear the album I hope people will see I have other talents besides my voice. I hope some other female artists will take heart from it, too.”

Savannah, Georgia, was Anthony’s home before he moved to Atlanta to jumpstart his music career. Shortly after arriving, he befriended another young, aspiring artist – her name was India.Arie. “India was about the first person I met when I got to Atlanta. I saw her at The Underground and she looked cool, so we started talking, and I learned that we both liked the same artists, and we began sharing music. “India had been playing the guitar, so I bought one and started messing around with it.” He went on to write the song Part Of My Life for India’s critically acclaimed and multi-Grammy nominated debut album Acoustic Soul.

Anthony has traveled extensively around Europe over the past three years, playing the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, several dates at London’s Jazz Café and shows in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Stockholm, building a decent fan following along the way.

Anthony began his music career by writing ‘Part Of My Life’ for India.Arie’s debut album ‘Acoustic Soul’, and she reciprocates by duetting with him on ‘Words’, a song they co-wrote for his brilliant new album, The Red Clay Chronicles.

The 16-track album includes three bonus cuts from Anthony’s debut album (unreleased outside the US), including ‘50/50 Love’, a lovers rock track on which fellow Atlanta resident Julie Dexter guests. Guitarist Earl Klugh also features on one track, ‘Smoke One With Earl’.

Many critics have indeed compared David to a modern-day Bill Withers, with his blues voice and the contemporary social issues he tackles in some of his songs, like the album title track about gentrification and rebuilding of the inner city, and the pushing out of long-time, low-income residents. “I wanted it to represent my scene or at least my perspective of the scene and let everybody else hear what kind of flavor and diversity we have here in the South”.

If you ever get a chance to catch Anthony live do so – you will not be disappointed!

She has the sheer vocal power to attack a song like “Don’t U Worry” – the opening track of her debut Dome album – then conjures up a totally different, subtle mood on the intimate soulful ballad “Best Friend’s Lover”, with its tale of a love triangle.

She has co-written all but one of the songs on her album “The Real Thing”. The album’s producer, Shaun Stanley of Tek Dis Productions, co-wrote 10 of them, one was co-written and produced by Don E, and one is a cover of a Loose Ends song “Watching You” – a US No 1 R&B hit in the Eighties – with guest vocals from fellow Dome artist Rahsaan Patterson and Carl McIntosh of Loose Ends.

Beverlei’s first interest in music came from her mother who sang in the local church gospel choir. As she was growing up in Birmingham, Beverlei couldn’t wait to join the choir herself and eventually she became leader of her local choir, even getting the chance to sing a solo part with the US gospel act The Clarke Sisters.

“One day my music teacher told me that a local band were looking for some gospel type singers to help on a recording project, so my mum, sister, a cousin and I went along to audition for the group, who turned out to be the Fine Young Cannibals.

In 1996 Beverlei got her lucky break to begin work as a solo artist in her own right, recording with writer/producers Gary Benson and Livingston Brown. The resulting single “On and On” was a huge club hit in the UK and Beverlei completed an album to follow it.

Rob Derbyshire and Solomon Mullings first worked with Beverlei when she contributed guest vocals on “Unwrap”, one of the tracks on their 1999 Full Flava album, and they were keen to contribute a track to her solo project. The song chosen is another club-friendly tune, “Gonna Get Over You”, first recorded in the disco era by Canadian singer France Joli.
