Juicing Recipe

So this is what I had for breakfast this morning...usually on Saturday mornings we make pancakes, but this morning we juiced instead. I found this recipe from My New Roots and she has lots of great juicing recipes and insight HERE! The flavor of this combination of juices was pretty good! It's just always hard for me to drink the whole glass...as I get about halfway through it gets harder and harder to drink! We have not committed to doing a juice fast, but are going to try to juice more often to get extra fruits and veggies in our diet.

We also purchased our first Bountiful Basket today! Bountiful Baskets is a Food Co-op that distributes produce baskets weekly. You can find more information on their website, HERE. The have many locations in different states and if you are looking for a good deal on lots of fruits and veggies then it might be for you. The only catch is that you do not know what you'll be getting in your basket. You can add on to you basket if you want more veggies, breads, fruit, ect. But each basket (you bring a laundry basket) is an assortment of vegetables and fruits.

1 sweet potato, 4 stalks of celery, 5 carrots, 1 apple, and ½ lemon

Growing Grass

Hudson and I planted grass seed the other day and I never took pictures when we started, but now that the grass is growing I thought I would post some. He gets so excited each morning when he sees how much is has grown, it's really cute! The seed took 3-4 days to start sprouting, but once it started it has not stopped! We used cat grass seed, but you could choose any kind you find. Rye grass seed also grows really fast, about 3-5 days. Here is what you'll need:

Grass seed
Empty baby food jar
Potting soil
Water

Have your child fill the jar with potting soil and following the directions for whichever grass seed you're planting, place the seeds in the soil. Place some more soil over top. Water the seeds and place in the sunlight, by a window. Watch and wait for it to grow!

It was fun to have it planted in the glass jar, because Hudson was able to see all of the roots from the grass growing throughout the soil.

Cloud Dough

I made this cloud dough for Hudson to play with and got the recipe from Pre-School Play via I Can Teach My Child. All it is, is a mixture of flour and baby oil! It feels super soft in your hands and sticks together like wet sand would. Hudson pretended to make cupcakes and cakes with his, and I gave him some paper straws to use as pretend candles. I made a batch last week for him to play with outside in his sand table. Today I made a few batches for him to play with inside in a large bin on the floor.

You will need just flour, baby oil, and a container for mixing. I made smaller batches and used this Tupperware that already has the 32oz (4 cup) measuring marked. That made it easy to just fill to the line and add the baby oil.

Mix together:

4 Cups Flour

with

1/2 Cup Baby Oil

(easy to double or make as many batches as you need to fill a play tub)

Stir together until it looks like little crumbs and oil is absorbed. I used a spoon at first, then just mixed it with my hands.

I placed a large plastic bin on top of a vinyl tablecloth on out floor for Hudson to play with the dough in. Some of it made it to the red mat, but it was easy to pour it back into the bin when he was done.

I gave him an old muffin tin, cookie sheet, spoon, play cups, bowls, and some paper straws to use as pretend candles. I think you can make this activity new and different each time by changing out some of the play tools that they use with the dough.

Hudson had fun playing and Max liked feeling the cloud dough too, just had to make sure it didn't go in his mouth. I ended up making 3 or 4 batches of the cloud dough to fill his tub.

I made this label when I made some of the cloud dough as a gift. You can save the image and print onto card stock or I printed it onto labels. I put one on a gift tag and tied to a mason jar. Then I used another label to place on Hudson's Tupperware of cloud dough. Would be cute to use as a tag for party favors too. You can add the child's name onto one of the clouds.

Shaving Cream Art

This a fun kids craft using shaving cream and paint. Hudson's preschool class made these, however they did it when Hudson was out sick with chicken pox. So I thought I would try it at home! It reminded me of the Milk Art Craft I did with Hudson a while ago. However, with this one you are actually able to keep your designs on paper!

You will need:

Shaving cream, afew different colored paints, old cookie sheet or tray, white card stock paper, toothpicks, and a spatula.

First spray the shaving cream onto the cookie sheet.

Then spread it using the spatula to be about the size of your piece of paper.

Squeeze the paints onto the shaving cream. You can experiment with how you place them.

You can make dots, lines, or swirl is around. How you place the paint can change how your picture looks.

Using a toothpick swirl the paint around in the shaving cream.

It should look something like this!

Then place your paper on top of the designs. Press down gentle so all the paint touches the paper.

Peel the paper off and it will look like this. Using the spatula scrape the shaving cream off of the paper.

Then you will have your paper with the swirly designs on it! Let it dry and then you can use the paper for another fun craft.

January Preschool Activities

I am a little late on posting this, but here are some ideas of things to do with preschool age kids at home. Hudson's preschool sends home a calendar every month with ideas on it for each weekday. What we are sent home with coordinates with what they are learning about in school. Would love to hear any ideas of simple activities that you have been doing with your young kids at home! Raw Tacos

This is what we ate for dinner tonight and they were AMAZING! The recipe is from Sarah at My New Roots, an amazing food blog with tons of tasty and healthy recipes and tips. You can find the recipe here. The tacos are made with all raw ingredients, and packed full of flavor! The salsa is full of fresh veggies and you top the tacos with a cashew "sour cream". Instead of meat you make a walnut taco mix, which is loaded with omega-3 fats and health benefits. Sarah shares some really interesting health benefits on her blog! You've got to try this recipe, so yummy!

A is for Apple

I bought a couple 3 lb bags of organic apples the other day and got around to making some homemade apple sauce today. Hudson has been all about eating apples lately so I thought is would be fun to make applesauce together and do a craft. While the applesauce was cooking Hudson made some apple stamps. Here is what you'll need for the craft and you can find the applesauce recipe below:

1 apple, cut in half
Red paint
Paper plate
2 pieces of paper, (we used red and white)
Scissors
Glue
Marker

Cut the apple in half and pour some red paint on the paper plate. Have your child dip the apple in the paint and press the apple onto the paper. While they are stamping the paper cut out an uppercase and lowercase letter A out of construction paper. Have your child glue the letters onto the paper. Then I had Hudson write out Apple at the bottom of the paper as we sounded and spelled it out together.

Homemade Organic Applesauce

Hudson was able to help a little while making the applesauce. He counted out the apples and sorted them by colors. Then placed them in the pot as I peeled and chopped them. However, about halfway through he snagged one of the apples and had himself a little snack while I finished up.

I made the applesauce with organic apples, however you could use non-organic apples. We also did not add any extra sugar, just a little bit of honey. But you could add 1/2 cup brown or granulated sugar to it.

Here is our recipe:

3 lbs of organic apples (about 6-8 total, we used half Gala and half Granny Smith)
3/4 cup organic fresh pressed apple juice, or you can use water
1 to 2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 tablespoons Honey

Peel and slice the apples. Place them in a large pot with the apple juice or water, cinnamon, lemon juice, and honey. Stir together. Cook on the stove top on medium high until it begins to simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook for about 12-15 minutes. Once the apples are soft use a potato masher to mash them to your desired consistency. I like homemade applesauce chunky, but if you want it to be really thin you could run the cooked apples through a food processor until smooth. Serve warm or cold.

God Created Light: Kids Craft

So I came across this amazing blog the other day while on Pinterest and this Bible craft is from the blog. The blog is I Can Teach My Child and it is loaded with tons of awesome educational crafts and activities to do with your kids. They are even divided up by ages. This light box craft is part of a series on her blog for teaching about the seven days of creation. You can find the lessons for all seven days here. There are also videos of really cute songs that you can sing with your child for each day.

I plan to go through these with Hudson, he enjoyed the "day one" activity today. You can find all the details for the day one lesson here.

I now offer free printable drink flags with the purchase of paper straws in my shop. The drink flags come in a pdf file that is e-mailed to you and can be printed at home. There are 24 different chevron colors available. I also offer a blank pdf file if you would like to print it on your own patterned or colored paper. The paper straws come in 22 different colors and designs.

Print the pdf file on a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of light weight card stock paper. Cut out each drink flag.

Wrap the flag around the straw and secure using a small amount of glue or tape. Let dry if using glue.

New Year's Eve Poppers

Make some New Year's Eve Poppers for the kids all you need is:

toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper, scissors, tape, confetti, candy, ribbon

Cut the toilet paper roll in half
Fill both sides of the toilet paper roll with candy and confetti
Wrap it in paper and tie the sides

Glitter Balloons

We made some glitter filled balloons this morning for New Year's Eve and Hudson had fun shaking them around. I made him play with them outside just in case they popped...

All you need is:

Balloons
Glitter
Funnel
Sharpie (if you want to write on the balloons)

Place the funnel inside of the balloon after you write on them.

Pour the glitter into the balloon and blow it up. Just make sure you don't breath in while doing this...or you'll get a mouthful of glitter...I'm not speaking from experience or anything. ;)

New Year's Eve Sound Makers

I made these noise makers with Hudson this morning for New Year's Eve. It's a fun and easy kid's craft to make that you can do with whatever you have around the house. Here is what you will need:

Empty water bottles
Glue
Silver spray paint
Glitter
Buttons
Sprinkles
Sequins
Pipe cleaners
Anything you can find around the house!

First spray paint the lids of the water bottles silver.

Fill the water bottles with all of your buttons, sequins, pipe cleaners, ect.

You can roll up a piece of paper to make a funnel to use to pour the glitter, sprinkles, or any other small items into the water bottle.

Pour in the glitter!

Pour in the sprinkles!

Once the lids are dry add a little glue along the sides of the the inside of the lid and screw them on. You don't want the lids coming off when you're little one is shaking these in the house!

DIY Cake Dummy

I made this cake dummy from Styrofoam rounds and covered it with fondant. I use it to display the mini bunting cake toppers that I sell in my Etsy shop, however I have used them to display on dessert tables at parties as well. They are really easy to make and you can use this simple technique to make all different sizes of them. I made mine very simple so that I can reuse it for different holidays and occasions. I pin different colors of ribbon around the center or bottom to decorate it. However, you could color your fondant and add fondant decorations to the cake as well. They last a really long time, I have had some for a few years before throwing them away.

Here is what you will need:

3 - 6"x1" Styrofoam rounds
2 wooden cake dowels, cut into 4 pieces
Fondant (can use wilton brand from craft store)
Wire cutters or something to trim the wood dowels
Mat (to roll fondant on)
Rolling pin

1. Stack the rounds to make your cake. You can use whichever size you'd like, I made mine with 6" rounds.

2. Insert one of the wooden dowels into all three rounds and mark it at the top where it is level with the Styrofoam.

3. Trim all four of the dowels to that length

4. Insert them into the Styrofoam cake as shown above. This will home the pieces of Styrofoam together.

1. Roll out your mat and dust with cornstarch.

2. Roll out your fondant large enough so that it will cover the your cake with some excess to trim off the bottom. It helps to have a mat with the measurements on it. (so if your cake is 6"x3" you want your fondant to be rolled to about 13" all the way around. Don't make it too thin or the Styrofoam will tear through the fondant. The wilton fondant works great for cake dummies.

3. Flip your mat upside down on top of the Styrofoam cake so that it is centered.

4. Peel back the mat so that the cake looks like the picture above.

5. Now you will need to pull the fondant so that it is smooth of the cake without and creases or folds. You can use an angled spatula to help trim the extra fondant off from the bottom of the cake. Work on small sections at a time, working your way around the cake until all of it is smooth and trimmed. Let the cake dry. If you want to have any holes in the cake to hold toppers or candles make them while the fondant is still soft.

Homemade Christmas Ornament

I wanted to do a Christmas craft with Hudson and thought it would be fun to help him make an ornament for our tree. I got the idea from Parent's Magazine here. They have so many great craft and Christmas ornament ideas! The one that they made has penguins in the "snow globe" made from pipe cleaners. It was really cute, I just didn't have any pipe cleaners. So Hudson and I made a snow globe ornament with a Christmas tree in it and a North Pole sign.
Here is what you'll need to make this one:

1 Small clear plastic cup
Stiff felt for base and sign
Red bakers twine
1 Red stripes paper straw
Green tulle
1 Lollipop stick
Silver glitter
Tacky spray glue
Scissors
Pen
Thumb tack, to poke hole in cup

First trace around the top of the plastic cup on a piece of the stiff felt. Then cut out the circle slightly larger then the line so that the cup will fit on the felt.

Next using the thumb tack poke a hole in the bottom of the cup (the top of your ornament). My plastic cup cracked a little at the top, but it didn't really matter. Fold your piece of twine in half and thread through the hole. Tie a knot so the twine won't come back through the hole. You should now have a loop to hang your ornament like in the picture.

Next cut your paper straw so it will fit inside of the cup. Then cut a small rectangle of felt and write North Pole on it. Glue the sign around the top of the striped paper straw.

Next cut pieces of tulle and begin to tie them around the lollipop stick. Don't worry about what it looks like with the length of the tulle because you will just trim it with scissors. You may need to cut the lollipop stick shorter. Once it is covered in tulle trim the tulle so it is shaped like a tree. We wrapped a small piece of silver pipe cleaner on top.

Then you can glue the tree and North Pole sign onto the stiff felt. Make sure it is centered so that the cup will fit over top.

Then place your tree in a box (so glitter doesn't get everywhere) and spray with the tacky glue. Sprinkle with glitter and shake off any excess. Then glue on the cup and let it dry before hanging.

A lot of this craft required me getting it ready for what Hudson was able to do or helping him do it. But, we still had fun making it together! An older child would be able to do much more of this on their own.

But for the little ones they can still:

-Help cut the felt

-String the twine through the hole

-Cut the paper straw

-Cut pieces of tulle

-Hold lollipop stick while you tie tulle

-Help trim the tulle tree

-Sprinkle with glitter!

Cocktails and Cupcakes Bridal Shower

Here is my beautiful sister Wesley!

She is getting married in about one month and I am so excited for her and Kyle. We had a lot of fun celebrating her the other night and I wanted to share some of the pictures. The pictures were taken by Andrea of Limeflower Studio. Thanks so much Andrea for capturing the night for us!

The Bridal Shower was an evening shower, for cocktails, cupcakes, and other desserts. All the girls came dressed in their best and looked awesome!

We played the toilet paper wedding dress game. You divide into groups of about 4-5 girls and each group is given about 3 rolls of toilet paper to make a wedding dress. Each group must pick one girl in the group to model the dress. Everyone got pretty creative and had a lot of fun with it!

The Bride-to-be gets to choose the winner.

The other game we played was the Bridal Shower Trivia Game. I video taped Kyle (the Groom) answering 13 questions about Wesley (the Bride). Then at the shower you give the guests the questions to try to answer. Once everyone is done filling out their answers you play the video, but have the bride answer the questions before playing the grooms answer. It was another fun game that got lots of laughs! Whoever answers the most questions correctly wins a prize.

Then we all had fun being silly for pictures in the photo booth area I had set up. I bought teal wrapping paper and taped it to the wall.

It was a great night, and loved celebrating my little sister... Next up Bachelorette Party!!!

Sugar Scrub Party Favors

For my sister's Bridal shower I decided to make each guest a small jar of sugar scrub as a party favor. I used baby food jars to put the scrub into, just spray painted the lids teal first. The sugar scrub was a peppermint sugar scrub, you can find the recipe below. To make the jars you will need he following:

Baby food jars, cleaned with labels removed
Spray paint
Address labels
Pipe cleaners or ribbon
Sugar scrub recipe (see below)

1. Once all of your baby food jars are cleaned remove the lids and spray paint the tops and sides the color you would like. Let them dry.

2. Next print your labels for the jars. If you're using the Avery address labels you can download the template online here, and easily enter your text. I created my text in picnic and inserted the image into the template. You can find and save my image below.

3. Make your sugar scrub and fill each jar. Wrap a pipe cleaner around each jar, or tie with a ribbon.

4. Place a label on each jar and you're done.

Peppermint Sugar Scrub Recipe

1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon of peppermint extract
8 vitamin E liquid capsules (cut open and add gel)

Mix together ingredients in a large bowl. Fill each jar with sugar scrub. Recipe can be easily doubled to fill more jars. This sugar scrub is great to use on your feet.

Cinnamon Sugar Popcorn Mason Jar Gifts

Here is another mason jar holiday gift idea, great for neighbors, teachers, or friends and family. This cinnamon sugar popcorn recipe is amazing! I have shared the full recipe before here. I made up some of these jars for another holiday boutique and thought I would share the idea with all of you. They are really simple to make, here's what you'll need:

8oz Mason jars
White popcorn kernels
Sugar
Cinnamon
Salt
Twine
Glittery card stock paper
small plastic bags to hold the cinnamon sugar mixture (you can find small ones at Hobby Lobby)
hole punch
paper cutter or scissors
printed labels and directions (you can save my images below and insert into word doc)

You will place 1/2 cup of sugar into the bottom of each jar, then follow with 1/2 cup of the white popcorn kernels. Place the lid on the jar and tighten. Measure out the cinnamon sugar mixture for each bag. You will need 4 tablespoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix it together and place in the small bag. Each jar makes about 7-8 cups of popcorn.
Next you can print the cinnamon sugar popcorn labels and directions for the front and back of the glittery card stock. You can find the images that I used below. Just save and insert each into a word document to print. You can drag the images smaller or larger depending on the size of the label you want to make. Then cut out the labels and glue to the glittery card stock. Hole punch the corner of each label.
Next, hole punch two holes on each side of the top of the small bags and thread the twine through the holes and around the lid of the jar. You will also want to make sure to thread the twine through your label. Then you're done! Make sure to make a batch for yourself too, it will make a good snack for while you're filling the jars. :)

Broccoli Pesto

I made this broccoli pesto last night and tossed it over orzo and steamed broccoli florets, then topped it with avocado slices, pine nuts and freshly grated Parmesan. It was soo yummy! The recipe came from a new cookbook I picked up at Anthropologie. It's called super natural every day by Heidi Swanson. There are lots of great healthy recipes in it, and I can't wait to try out more of them. This broccoli pesto is really simple to make and easy to toss over your favorite pasta.

Ingredients:

2 cups of broccoli, blanched
2 garlic cloves, peeled
2/3 cup pine nuts, toasted
1/3 cup freshly grated parmesan
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor, except the olive oil and milk. Once all the ingredients are in the food processor stream in the olive oil and milk while pulsing the other ingredients until smooth. The original recipe called for creme fraiche, however I did not have any so I just used whole milk. It came out great!

Bruschetta with Pears, Fontina, and Pistachios

We made this bruschetta on Thanksgiving as an appetizer and it is AMAZING! My Mom shared the recipe and I am not sure where it originally came from, but it is one that I will be making again! I love the combination of the sweet pears, creamy fontina, and salty pistachios. Yumm!

Ingredients:

1 baguette, sliced
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
9 oz fontina cheese, sliced
1/4 cup pistachios, shelled and chopped
2 pears (one red, one green), sliced
freshly ground salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 425 degrees, and line a baking sheet with foil. Slice baguette.

Lay slices on the baking sheet. Brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 3-5 minutes or until bread is toasted.

Top with freshly chopped garlic and the sliced fontina cheese.

Sprinkle the pistachios on top, then place back in the oven for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Remove from the oven once the cheese is melted and top with pear slices. Serve while still warm.

Advent Conspiracy
