Each time you visit a great museum, you give yourself a gift that will keep on giving. It can spark inspiration and bring new perspective. It can open up places in your mind you didn't even know existed. And it may just speak to your heart in some life-changing ways. Little Rock is home to a sundry of fun and fascinating museums. From the ESSE Purse Museum to the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, there's something here for everyone. And, while it's impossible to pick a favorite, we wanted to highlight a few local gems we've visited over the last few months.

The Historic Arkansas Museum, located in downtown Little Rock, is a premier state history museum and historic site dedicated to preserving Arkansas's frontier heritage. It features a unique combination of a modern museum center with seven galleries and an entire city block of original 19th-century buildings. The museum is known for its "Living History" program, where costumed actors demonstrate 19th-century trades like blacksmithing and printing.

Staffers recently attended the 53rd Annual Territorial Fair where they enjoyed delicious cast iron drop donuts and lemon raspberry shrub, played a lively game of chuck-a-luck, made corn husk dolls, and learned about early letterpress in the Woodruff Print Shop. It was like hitching a ride on a time machine! If you are a history buff, have dreams of homesteading, or just want to learn a little Arkansas heritage, this museum is for you. Find out more here!

Quiet Luxuries for a Happier Life

In our busy lives, the small rituals we incorporate into our daily routines can become acts of “quiet luxury”, bringing a sense of calm and satisfaction to the otherwise mundane daily grind. Imagine waking up on your day off and sitting down with a perfectly brewed cup of ONYX coffee. Now, imagine you are drinking from your favorite handcrafted mug- the one that feels more like a piece of art than ordinary tableware.

All of these things can completely transform your morning. It’s not just about the caffeine anymore; this is a moment of indulgence that will bring you fresh perspective and set a positive tone for your day. These little indulgences remind us to savor life’s details. Whether it’s a cool new journal for writing down your thoughts, a soft blanket to relax and unwind beneath, or a quiet moment alone with a good cup of coffee- these touches add richness to our everyday lives. And it’s in these small moments of “quiet luxury” that we find that much-needed pause, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and making even the simplest of routines feel intentional and fulfilling.

Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the best-known artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works are edgy and raw and through a bold sense of color and composition, he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery, and primitivism.

The conjunction of various media is an integral element of Basquiat’s art. His paintings are typically covered with text and codes of all kinds: words, letters, numerals, pictograms, logos, map symbols, diagrams, and more, and featured multi-panel paintings and individual canvases with exposed stretcher bars, the surface dense with writing, collage, and imagery.

The number 57 is a reference to 57 Great Jones Street in New York City, where Basquiat created some of his best-known works.

Arkansas offers so many opportunities for magical weekend getaways. You can travel in just about any direction in this state and land somewhere full of beauty and adventure. We recently discovered Wanderoo Lodge in Eureka Springs and cannot say enough good things about it. This outdoor adventure lodge features an onsite restaurant/bar, serving up craft beers, cocktails, delicious food and live music. Just outside of the gravel bar there's a huge community firepit where we built a fire and enjoyed the music from just a few feet away. The band played a mix of country and rockabilly that set the mood for a fun evening. And we even made a few new friends while sitting around the fire. The rooms were cozy with good vibes and comfortable beds. And our cabins were centrally-located for all the best Eureka Springs activities. 10/10 recommend this fun and friendly lodging and cannot wait to visit again!

By now you are probably aware of our love for cats. Yup. We are cat people. Fat cats, alley cats, grumpy cats... we love them all. Even BIG cats. So we could not resist stopping by Turpentine Creek during our recent trip to NWA.

This Wildlife Refuge nestled in the mountains of Eureka Springs is committed to providing lifetime refuge for abused and neglected “Big Cats” with an emphasis on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars.

We arrived a little late but the friendly staff allowed us to wander through the grounds where we met Kizmin (the beautiful white tiger photobombing our pic above), and an unexpected new friend- BamBam the bear.

This adorable Grizzly Bear is considered “The Ham” of the refuge, and it's clear why he received that title. BamBam was happy to show off for us, rolling up into a ball and doing his own style of bear breakdancing. As you can see, we said a beary tender goodbye and promised to visit again soon.

If you would like to visit Turpentine Creek, learn more about their mission, or contribute to the lifelong care of these beautiful animals, head to their website. You can find volunteer opportunities, sponsor and animal, and even buy enrichment toys for them. 🐾

We recently found ourselves in ONYX country, and had to stop in for a quick treat to put a little pep in our step. After some very difficult decision making, we decided on the ONYX Delight, Salt Mocha, and Hail Fellow Well Met! and all agreed that the ladder was the most decadent caffeinated beverage any of us had ever tasted.

This Arkansas based Cafe & Roastery has certainly changed the game around the shop. We have stocked both our shelves and our homes with their coffee for years.
Here at Domestic Domestic, we take a lot of pride in our complimentary gift wrapping. Whether it’s a birthday gift for your favorite Sagittarius or everyone on your holiday gift list, you’re sure to get the crispiest edges in town when you #shopdomestic.

We start with artisan wrapping paper from our favorite little big time paper producer, Nashville Wraps. Then we delicately wrap each sassy mug, marshmallow cross-bow, or Shinola watch carefully to ensure it travels down the street or across the country safely. We crease the edges and square up each package like its going under our very own Christmas trees. Each package is then tied in the iconic gentleman’s knot in Domestic Green grosgrain ribbon. Finally, we slap a sticker with our name on it, just so everyone around the birthday dinner table or holiday festivity knows they’re getting something from the coolest shop on the block.

Field Tasted | Our Top 3 Onyx Coffee Blends

Good bean juice does, in fact, make you go fast. And we can always count on Onyx to create brews that titillate the senses. Based in northwest Arkansas, Onyx is a nationally recognized, award-winning roaster that prides itself on excellence and high-quality coffee. Though every roast warms our heart, we can’t stop pouring these three brews over (and over) again:

Southern Weather

Origin: Colombia, Ethiopia

While the weather in Arkansas has a mind of its own, Onyx’s Southern Weather strives for balance. Sporting a comfortable taste with notes of milk chocolate, plum, and walnuts, it’s no surprise this roast is Onyx’s (and our) bestseller. The washed Colombian and Ethiopian blend is perfect for people trying Onyx for the first time or who prefer a more traditional brew—so regardless of the time of year, this coffee is always in season.

Tropical Weather

Origin: Ethiopia

When warm, summer days feel like a figment of your imagination, Tropical Weather is here to help. If you’re looking for a brew that hits a little deeper than Southern Weather, this is it. Onyx created this roast to highlight their love of Ethiopian coffee, and the 50/50 blend of washed and natural beans has been fine-tuned to create a cup “greater than the sum of its parts.” Featuring a floral aroma with notes of plum, berries, and sweet tea, each sip feels like liquid sunshine.

Geometry

Origin: Colombia, Ethiopia

If you want to experience coffee from a new angle, let us give you a sine. Geometry—in coffee form, at least—is Onyx’s best subject. As a washed processed Ethiopian and Colombian blend, this brew offers notes of berries, sweet lemon, black tea and honey. The combination of flavors works equally well as an espresso or filtered coffee, and is a light (though equally vibrant) alternative to Southern Weather.

Is there anything better than the smell of bacon in the morning?! We think not especially when you know the farmer it came from. We love picking ours up from Porch Swing Farms (along with eggs, pimento cheese…)

There is an art to the perfectly cooked bacon. We have tried frying in the cast iron skillet, baking in the stove, but true perfection can be found every time with the Microwave Bacon Cooker. Made in North Carolina, these bacon cookers are pieces of art themselves.

For the perfect bacon, simply drape a piece of bacon over the side of the cooker and microwave for one minute per each piece of bacon (up to ten pieces/ten minutes). The grease from the bacon will drip down to the bottom dish. No splatter! There is a spout for easy disposal of the grease and you can put this beauty in the dishwasher. Yes, you read that right… not only does it make the perfect bacon, but it makes clean up easy too.

So here’s to your bacon cooked perfectly each time, the coffee being strong, and your mornings starting off the best way possible!

Field Tasted | Ted Lasso's Shortbread

Like much of the world, we are anxiously awaiting season 3 of our beloved Ted Lasso. So, to pass the time, we decided to get to the bottom of a very mouthwatering mystery...just what makes Ted's shortbread so irresistible??

There are several recipes out there but we were really happy with the one we chose. It was easy enough for a kitchen novice and the result was buttery, flakey, perfection. Check out the recipe below to try it for yourself!

We all love the sentiment behind Lasso's Army Men tokens. But what about Army WOMEN?? Well this is where we have to give a special shoutout to our very own young feminist icon, Vivian Lord.

At the age of 6, Vivian won some Army Men figurines in an arcade. She loved playing with them but soon questioned why there weren't any women. If women served in the armed forces, why weren't they represented as well?

With the help of her parents, she searched the web and found that there wasn't a single company that produced these female figurines. There were pink Army Men, but they were still made from the same male molds. Well, this didn't sit well will the young Miss Lord who took it upon herself to write a letter to every major toy manufacturer asking them to correct their mistake. Only one toymaker responded, but they accepted the challenge and made Vivian's dream a reality!

Let the Good Times Roll: Jazzy Treats for Mardi Gras

We love getting festive and Mardi Gras always provides a great opportunity. This week we decided to get the good times rolling with a few of our favorite treats.

This jazzy crème brûlée was so quick and easy. You can follow any basic recipe (can't go wrong with Betty Crocker) and then just jazz it up with green and purple colored sugar.

Use a piece of paper or a cutting board to section off where you want your sugar. Since our crème brûlée is already a golden yellow we're adding our colors to each side to give it some Mardi Graz pizzazz.

Then throw it under the broiler or use a torch just enough to give it that crispy crunchy top. Breaking through the sugar is everyone's favorite part, right?!

And it wouldn't be a proper celebration without a cocktail! Check out our Instagram to see James (our very own in-house bartender) shake things up with his signature King Cake Cocktail.

Next up, the Marshmallow Crossbow Attack. Followed by the Mack Shenker Attack!

The competition got a little heated in the Super Sweeper. Fruit Loops can do that to you. But in the end, we all know Beth Quarles is a winner! (And James Lindahl and Beth are a perfect 10 as American Gothic)

A common struggle among all retailers is the dumpster. Often bags can weigh as much a 3rd grader. The Dumpster Toss is a test of a true retail professional.

We all fight with technology. It makes life easier, right?

The bar code scanners can be your best friend and your enemy all in the same transaction. Indigo Anderson-Moore's quick spin but Daniel back on the charger. This twisting challenge got The Flying Squirrels back in the game.

Quite possibly the world's fastest gift wrapper, Heather D. Smith, crushed Indigo at the Gift Wrap Challenge. Even with a paper pull handicap, this challenge was not a challenge at all. Is there such a thing as the World Championship of Gift Wrap?

The most popular candle line at the shop is Sydney Hale. You have to know the goods to sell them. In the Name That Scent Challenge sniffing blindfolded had us all in a sudden death smell off.

Speed comes in handy in a retail shop. But never more important that at the end of a long shift when the cardboard needs to be broken down. Daniel crushed the Box Break Down, injury free, I might add.

And our final battle of the day was the Trash Can B-Ball. No matter the profession, Trash Can Hoops is always a source of pride. But check out Beth's celebratory dance!

The Flying Squirrels: 5

Field Test | Raen Sunglasses

When it comes to essential fashion accessories, a great pair of sunglasses definitely ranks at the top of the list. But are all shades created equal? The answer is a resounding NO. In recent years, RAEN sunglasses have become a favorite among celebrities for their effortless look and mix of classic and on-trend styles. And the company’s high craftsmanship standards make these sunglasses a steal for the price.

Most of the cheaper rack eyewear you see is made using injection molded plastic frames. As the name implies, injection mold frames are made by injecting a liquefied petroleum based plastic into a mold, then applying a spray on finish. These frames are generally less expensive, but you get what you pay for here. They are brittle and far more likely to break. And that beautiful tortoise shell will be fading and flaking in a matter of months.

RAEN’s attention to detail and quality is just one of the many reasons we love them. Each pair is designed in the company’s California studio and handmade with high-grade materials. Their frames are created using premium grade cellulose acetate, a high quality plastic originating from the renewable resources of wood pulp and natural cotton fibers. Acetates are known for being strong, lightweight, and flexible. They also result in greater transparency and richer colors. Unlike the cheaper injection molded frames, acetate retains that color brightness impeccably over time because its hue is actually embedded in the material rather than sprayed on. Its unique aging stabilizers prevent peeling, fading, yellowing or other discoloration from UV light or skin contact. Additionally, acetate is hypoallergenic, making it safe for those with sensitive skin!

RAEN also goes the distance when it comes to the frames’ structure. Each temple has a wire core embedded in it. This piece of hardware is what holds the temple shape, and keeps your favorite pair of shades fitting your subtle nuances for a long time to come. Because the hinge is mounted to this wire core, the frames are strong and sturdy throughout their entire construction-ready to stand the test of time.

This week JD had the pleasure of visiting one of the newest businesses in downtown Little Rock. Handle Barber shop (@handlebarbershop) has is a modern take on a vintage classic. Be ready to be pampered in the manliest way possible. With custom made barber chairs and beautiful natural light this place is a breath of fresh air for anyone that needs a trim, a fresh cut, or beard maintenance.

Historically the barber shop is a place of relaxation, and an escape from the world for most men, and this really seemed to come to life at Handle. The staff felt like longtime friends. Handle is here to build relationships centered around making you look and feel good. Cody, the head barber at Handle, puts pride and passion into work, and made sure JD was comfortable and got exactly what he was hoping to get out of this experience. Cody executed precision and paid attention to the little details while giving his beard a nice trim. JD walked away from his appointment feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and extremely impressed by the skill of Cody's work. He will definitely be coming back. If you're in the area you should definitely pay a visit to the team over at Handle, on the corner of 6th and Main, you will not be disappointed.

With echoes of Patsy Cline, Emmy Lou Harris, Lucinda WIlliams and The Dixie Chicks, the group has created an exquisite homage to traditional country/folk/Americana, with a unique and current texture all it's own.

Every city is full of hidden gems, sometimes it just takes a little digging to find them. Our latest venture led us to a quiet paradise in the heart of Little Rock AR, where we found Dunbar Garden, blooming with colorful bounty and rich in community spirit.

Since 1992, Dunbar has served as a non-profit organization with a mission to preserve the relationship between education and the natural world. The garden provides hands-on, outdoor learning activities to all ages. It also participates in farmer's markets during the growing season and hosts a variety of workshops and events throughout the year. (The Annual Pig Roast, and Backyard Chicken Workshop are a few personal favorites.)

If you’ve never experienced the garden, we suggest visiting soon. Stepping through the gate feels like entering a new and beautiful world. And after spending a few moments there, it's almost easy to forget you're in the city. This rustic paradise in the city is equipped with a greenhouse, numerous plants, flowers, fresh local produce and a small variety of livestock including (brace yourself!) baby goats.

Dunbar grows a variety of row crops like cabbage, lettuce, squash, zucchini, cucumber. An assortment of herbs and flowers are often abundant. And they proudly produce "the hottest peppers in the world (which are entered annually into The Root Cafe's Pepper Eating Contest). Of course, farming can be fickle. No matter the amounting of planting and planning, things can change. But every challenge is met with excitement and innovation, and the folks at the garden are always ready to keep it interesting. In recent years, Dunbar has introduced beehives, producing pounds of sweet local honey.

The garden is located at 1800 South Chester St, and open Monday-Friday. Donations are greatly appreciated as they help to offset the cost of this incredible program. So plan an afternoon visit and be amazed by all that these fine folks are doing to grow our community.

It's part of what makes this small urban teaching garden such an incredible space. Dunbar has also partnered with many of Little Rock's favorite restaurants. They also grow and provide hops to local breweries free of cost in exchange for tasty brews which are served during many of the garden's festivities.

Handmade pottery coffee mugs, carved wooden cutting boards, shiny metal trinkets, and hiking gear are just a few of the things that make up the interior of Domestic Domestic on Kavanaugh. If you happen by on-foot, you’ll likely want to step in and stay a while, examining the endless treasures lining the shelves.

The vibe is laidback, only made more apparent when owner Heather Smith describes the store, “We’re your weekend place, not your nine-to-five, we’re your have-a-beer-and-hangout-location.”

One glance around is enough to know that Smith is not new to business ownership, especially when it comes to owning a small, local operation.

The Northeast Arkansas native has owned previous small businesses from catering to housewares to kitchenware in the past, and as she says, “Retail is certainly my calling.”

Before opening Domestic Domestic, she was not far down the street with Eggshells Kitchen Co., her first small business in Little Rock. She and her partner, Sarah Ort, opened up in 2008.

Smith says, “We opened in literally the armpit of things going horribly wrong with the economy – and we always figured if we could make it then, then we would be ok.”

After the economy began to slowly straighten out, Smith noticed a change in people’s spending habits. “There’s certainly a movement,” she explains, “I caught myself doing it personally, even … I was trying to find more American made and higher quality products.”

Searching for a higher quality and supporting local became the two driving factors for what would later become Domestic Domestic. Funnily enough, she points to local company PK Grills as a jump-start to the idea. “We credit them with the inspiration behind the store because we had such a great relationship with them. No one brings a PK grill back in because they break – in fact they don’t break. Plus, the company was located here in Little Rock. It was just a very seamless, easy, and transparent relationship.”

With this in mind, Smith and Ort sold Eggshells to Lindsey Gray and moved to Asheville, NC, a place where Smith had already spent a lot of time. With that move, the two took the opportunity to open up Domestic Domestic online while they waited for an available brick-and-mortar space.

Rock City has a way with people, however. Smith remembers, “While we were waiting for a storefront to happen, we then realized how easy and nice life was both from a business perspective and a personal perspective here in Little Rock.”

Thus, they moved back, and in the process they began talking to Eggshells’ owner Lindsey Gray, who had by that time become a close friend. “That’s actually how we found out about the space we’re in now – through her,” laughs Smith. “It was just a really cool coincidence that we were able to open this shop up in our same neighborhood where loyal customers were already aware of what we do and what we stand behind.”

Thus, in the Spring of 2014, Domestic Domestic opened its doors in the Heights. Staying in the Heights was a very deliberate decision as Smith says, “We wanted to be somewhere that was really known for its Mom and Pop shops. … We’re a small business – and by small – I mean we’re smaller than small.”

Before opening, Smith really narrowed down the profile of what Domestic Domestic would look like to customers. “We started to put it together and we noticed that because Americans don’t make a ton of plastic – things aren’t nearly as colorful, so things are made out of wood and metal and leather. Our stock definitely had more of a natural feel to it, and through that, we went in the nature direction.”

Also, the shop began to take on more of a guy’s lens. She continues, “In Little Rock we noticed that there are a ton of great feminine boutiques … but there really wasn’t a weekend guy shop – and that’s what we dub ourselves as.”

The shop has a little bit of everything. Think general store for the nature enthusiast in your life, or just anyone who wants a quality-made mug or shirt. Smith adds, “We don’t have everything that you’re ever going to need, we have everything you’re ever going to want.”

Part of the fun in the endeavor is keeping up with American made products and vendors. Smith explains, “This industry is not as cutthroat as others are, there is a lot of communication between makers and companies and … we tip each other off. If someone has found or stumbled upon something cool or great … we’re going to share with other each other.”

This also ensures that Smith is able to constantly change what’s in the shop, and means she’s always looking for that next thing. “It keeps me interested and it keeps my customers interested. Eighty percent of the stuff is going to stay the same throughout the year, but that changed 20 percent is going to be what you’re looking for,” she says.

If you haven’t had a chance to pop into Domestic Domestic, give it a go. Their current plans are to “keep plugging along,” but you never know if an expansion is in their future. Don’t have time to stop by? There’s a link for that.
