The pin is on my Make It Mine board.  And the original post is here.  I know Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess made something similar.  That was the original plan…to mask off the letters with vinyl then paint over with a dark wash and peel the letters off to reveal the mod podged vintage book pages beneath.  Good plan except that I COULD NOT decide on a color.  I didn’t want to go too dark and the letters I chose KG Skinny Latte by Kimberly Geswein, were a bit too skinny and I thought you might not could see them clearly.  After letting it sit in my head, (aka putting the canvas away and forgetting about it until last week) I made a plan.  The plan included vintage book pages, whitewashed chevron, black vinyl, and song lyrics.

Let me just tell you that since I decided to use this particular lyric from “You Are My Sunshine,” I cannot get that song outta my head.  Seriously.

First I grabbed a 24×36 canvas at Michael’s with my coupon.  I also picked up Martha Stewart Crafts Tintable Glaze and Multi-Surface Satin Craft Paint in Wedding Cake (on a different trip with another coupon!).  The black vinyl is Silhouette’s vinyl from Michael’s, but they wouldn’t let me use a coupon for that. boo.  Mod Podge and painter’s tape I picked up at Walmart.

I tore the pages out of an old Aesop’s Fables book I bought eons ago.  I trimmed up the pages and mod podged them onto the canvas.  Side note…I think mod podge is hard, y’all.  I’ve used it many times and am just getting to be ok with it.  I got those pages on the best I could.  After the pages were on and dried, I coated that sucker good with mod podge all over and let it dry overnight.

Then I taped off a chevron pattern with painter’s tape.  I didn’t measure, I eye-balled it.

My lovely assistant helped me whitewash.

I cut the letters with my Silhouette and carefully transferred them over.

I love, love, love it.  It’s going to hang in my bedroom.  FYI…I chose this particular part of the song because my hubby and I refer to each other as ‘dear.’  Always have

I got a package in the mail! Love getting fun stuff in the mail. This time it was a bunch of fun stuff from Lifestyle Crafts to try out…two packs of their new Shape ‘N Tape and a Tape It cutting die kit. Um…FABULOUS!  And it’s ON SALE this week!!! (see bottom of post)

First, let me say that I love washi tape. I’ve been hoarding it lately like I did Mrs. Grossman stickers when I was in elementary school. But, I have to say, this stuff is BETTER than regular washi tape! The Shape ‘N Tape is a pack of 5, 6″x12″ sheets of tape. SHEETS! So it’s not just a little strip. You can run this stuff through a die cut machine…into. any. shape. Brilliant. It was really easy to work with too. (I was afraid it would be too sticky and stick to itself like packing tape or Saran Wrap does, neither of which I am good at handling.) It’s not too sticky, but sticky enough. I even accidentally got it stuck to itself and it peeled right off. It sticks to paper beautifully (and paper bags).

There are actually 18 cutting dies in the set, I just picked a few to try out first.  I cut off a piece of tape sheet and I placed a bunch of dies on the cutting pad.  I was able to get a bunch of shapes on a small area of the tape sheet.  I rolled the dies through the machine…perfect cuts.  No frayed edges or uncut sides.

I gathered up a few little goodies…my date stamp (from Staples), a little paper bag (from Two Peas in a Bucket), and a black ink pad (from Michael’s).

Those little bags are perfect to hold a gift card.  I wrapped up a music card, folded the edge and secured it with a cute little tape flag I cut.  I stamped a date on it…I’m using these for Valentine’s Day gifts for the kids!  (little clothespin came from Michael’s too)

This is a particularly busy week. Always is, it seems.  I can’t be the only one.  Busy week for you, too?  I’ve been getting teachers’ gifts ready, wrapping presents, 4th grade class treat day, one needs money for the school store, one has extra homework (EXTRA homework??), stomach bug, fancy party, and we have a birthday in the family this week.  Today, actually.  She’s our Christmas baby (pretty close to Christmas anyway) and has a great birthday story. I’ll have to share that sometime…

It’s my turn!  Welcome everyone following the 12 Days of Crafty Christmas!

December is a busy month for us.  We have all of the usual happy, merry craziness and my daughter’s birthday is only a few days before Christmas.  {That’s good story, but for another time}  Many years, school has already let out for the holidays by the time her birthday comes.  This year she will still be in school…which means we have put much thought into what will be taken to school for the birthday treat!

My daughter is kind of obsessed with mustaches.  I know it’s a trend…they are everywhere.  So we came up with a cute treat that’s holiday-ish, birthday-ish, use-for-what-ever-winter-themed-thing-you-have-going-on treat….chocolate mustaches!  And with the cute tag, we’ll be Staching Through the Snow!

I found all of the supplies at the craft store (I would even check Wal-Mart first).

Mustache candy mold

Candy melts

Lollipop sticks

Cello bags (I used shaped bags)

Ribbon

Staching tag (FREE printable!)

These were really easy.  Basically melt, pour, fridge, wrap, and tie.

Fill half of the candy cavity with melted candy.  Gently tap the mold on a hard surface, so that any air bubble will rise to the top.  Insert the lollipop stick into the groove on the mold and turn the stick to coat it all around.  Continue to fill the mold until full.  Place the mold in the fridge to harden.

When you take the mold out, give it a gentle twist and the mustache will pop out.  Place in the bag, tie with ribbon and tag.

Prepare to have one happy mustach-i-oed camper!
