Dominocast - Download of the Week - The Last Shadow Puppets

			<itunes:author>The Last Shadow Puppets</itunes:author>

The Last Shadow Puppets are Miles Kane (from The Rascals) and Alex Turner (you may know him from Arctic Monkeys). Firm friends ever since Arctic Monkeys toured with Kane’s previous group, The Little Flames, the pair were so inspired by listening to the likes of Scott Walker, early Bowie and David Axelrod, that they hatched a plan.

The result, The Age Of The Understatement, is an album of 12 full-blooded songs, bold and brassy, full of drama, wit and melody, that source the past but avoid falling into pastiche. Both Miles and Alex are 22 and this is a youthful record, full of life and the sheer pleasure of music making.

The album was recorded at Black Box Studios near Nantes, France in two weeks during the summer of 2007, James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco) manning both the producer's chair AND the drummer's stool. The band then approached Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy to arrange and conduct the orchestration of the tracks, which were recorded by the 22-piece London Metropolitan Orchestra at British Grove studios in London over Christmas.

The Age Of The Understatement is out now in the UK & Europe and in North America on May 6th on Domino.

For your listening/blogging pleasure, we've got the following rare golden nugget to offer up to you. Alex and Miles recorded this stripped-down performances during their brief visit to New York earlier this year at Avatar Studios around the same time as their impromptu public live debuts.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/LNBLkGIZYPk" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Clinic

			<itunes:author>Clinic</itunes:author>

Do It! is a summer album, a warped technicolor celebration -- pop music and severe cut-ups going from melody to acid psychosis to acoustic, usually in the same song. Recorded by Clinic in their Liverpool studio and mixed by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Archie Bronson Outfit), Do It! is a skewed pop amalgam of Motown, Exuma, deep lounge and The Balloon Farm (amongst many).

Clinic’s magisterial fifth album opens with what sounds like the melodious chimes of a harpsichord before all hell breaks loose. Asking you if you want the good or the bad news, the song lurches between Ade Blackburn’s bittersweet vocal line concerning memory and the band tearing itself inside out. Do It! is a record dripping in a delicious and seductive tension. Clinic have never sounded so relaxed and so uptight.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/6z_sl5ofSCo" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - The Kills

			<itunes:author>The Kills</itunes:author>

This duo subtly and organically fuses pop, glam, blues, art-punk, and hip-hop in a manner that flits between light and dark, funny and morbid, experimental and cute. The result is a short, sharp twelve track album of sensual, fresh, and atmospheric songs. A reminder that no one on earth makes rock 'n' roll quite like The Kills.

Praise for "Midnight Boom"...

Midnight Boom finishes with “Goodnight Bad Morning”, a song so full of early-morning melancholy it rivals even the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning” for sheer crow-black blues. Over a rocking-chair beat and soft-strum of acoustic guitar Mosshart and Hince whisper “....See it in everyone / Like a lost idea under lightbulb sun / Your eyes ready for take-off melt in your head / What a beautiful state we’re in.” It is a song that could have been the highlight on any Mazzy Star or Leonard Cohen album but it closes the Kills most remarkable record to date, staying with you long after it ends, Hince’s slow humming still resonating in your senses, the cold shiver still working it’s way down your spine. - Popmatters.com

The Kills sound and feel like no other band – nocturnal, way-out, untouchable – Mojo ****

They have evolved a great deal since their lean, mean early days: their sound is less ragged and raw, but their energy just as feral. From the whiplash time signatures of Alphabet Pony to the PJ Harvey - meets-Patti Smith thrashings of Hook and Line to the pensive serenity of Black Balloon. the songs are still driven by an itchy obsessiveness and feverish fits of guitar, but they're more crafted, and more fun. -Nylon

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Lightspeed Champion

			<itunes:author>Lightspeed Champion</itunes:author>

Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles. After their demise in 2006, Hynes began to focus on the more melodic fare that's closer to his heart. On his debut, "Falling Off The Lavender Bridge" he worked with Mike Mogis (resident producer for Saddle Creek Records) and was backed by an informal band including multi-instrumentalists Mogis and Nate Walcott, The Faint's drummer Clark Baechle, and guest vocalist Emmy The Great, along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall. Here, Hynes reveals much about himself; the album being packed with tragic-comic autobiographical numbers.

            <itunes:author>Robert Wyatt</itunes:author>

Robert Wyatt's career began forty years ago
drumming and singing for Soft Machine, a post-psych outfit tied to the
"Canterbury Scene" of the late 60s that yielded Pink Floyd and
Gong, among others. On this, his ninth album, Wyatt collaborates with Brian

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Cass McCombs

			<itunes:author>Cass McCombs</itunes:author>

Cass McCombs was born in California in 1977. He began playing guitar at the age of 14 and has a public high school education. Since, he has traveled and lived in many places. His first collection of recorded songs, “Not the Way E.P.”, was released in 2002 by Monitor Records of Baltimore, MD, followed the next year by a full-length, “A”, also on Monitor. Both albums were recorded in San Francisco and inspired partly by the events surrounding 9/11/01 and his experience living in New York City at that time. 4AD records of London began to license the albums abroad. In 2005, now joined by a band, McCombs released a concept-album, “PREfection”, through Monitor/4AD. “PREfection”, recorded very quickly in Michigan during the icy month of February, experiments with diverse lyrical subject matter. Although the band dissipated, McCombs performed extensively in the U.S. throughout the next year, mostly as an opening act in the lower rock circuit, picking up band members where he could. Over the years, the live band has changed so frequently, change itself could be considered a theme. Ranging from 8 to 3-piece, electric or acoustic, McCombs has always been fortunate to have his songs interpreted by innovative musicians. Yet, just as "PREfection" was released, nearly all of his working relationships vanished in a matter of weeks, and inevitably he turned his thoughts to making another record. His current release, “Dropping the Writ”, represents yet another shift. Most of the songs were written when McCombs moved back to California, this time southern, in late 2005. Assisted by friends, including some who had contributed to “A”, the new album was recorded partially in a studio as well as in the solitude of his newfound home. The music alternates between mania and wonder, within a song-form that McCombs continues to expand upon lyrically, often with the humorous, wry use of stories plucked FROM his own life experience. “Dropping the Writ”, an informal term which Wikipedia defines as “the procedure in some government systems where the head of government goes to the head of state and formally advise them to dissolve parliament”, is the first release by McCombs on Domino Records of London. He currently lives in Chicago, Illinois.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/PhrV9_g4r-w" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Ulrich Schnauss

			<itunes:author>Ulrich Schnauss</itunes:author>

Ulrich Schnauss' third album, Goodbye, is his first new release for Domino. It is also the end of a chapter in his sound. "I see these three albums as moving closer to something I wanted to do right from the beginning but didn't quite manage," he says. "Merging songwriting and indie elements with electronic music. I've tried to take all the ideas to the maximum."

The ambient tracks are more spacious, the songs more memorable, the multi-layered, guitar-heavy tracks more ragingly psychedelic. Just listen to the obliterating rush of “Medusa,” or the cloudbusting dream-pop of “Stars” (performed with long-time collaborator Judith Beck). At times, there are over 100 different audio tracks playing simultaneously: a tower of song. No wonder Goodbye has taken three solid years of in the studio.

After a few years of watered down, pseudonymous productions which he'd rather you didn't seek out, Ulrich released Far Away Trains Passing By. He was amazed they even wanted to release it; more amazed still when it became a cult success. Its more rock-influenced successor, A Strangely Isolated Place, received an even warmer response, from critics and other musicians alike. It led to Ulrich remixing some of his shoegazing heroes (Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, and Mark Gardener of Ride), as well as Depeche Mode, Justin Robertson, Lunz (Hans-Joachim Roedelius), and Longview.

Tired of the Berlin scene, Ulrich moved back to his hometown of Kiel to make Goodbye. Most of his schoolfriends had moved away, so he didn't have to worry about distractions. His last two album titles spoke of isolation, but was that the pain of enforced loneliness or the comfort of voluntary solitude. Goodbye is equally ambivalent. "Emotionally, I find farewell situations interesting," he says. "Saying goodbye can be tragic or hopeful."<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/o5GN2eANzQk" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Von Sudenfed

			<itunes:author>Von Sudenfed</itunes:author>

http://www.dominorecordco.us/index.php?page=artists&artistID=222

Von Sudenfed is the musical collaboration between Andi Tomi and Jan St. Werner, who trade under their more familar name of Mouse On Mars, and Mark E Smith, who has been one of the most creative voices for three decades as the leader of The Fall. Together, they have produced one of the finest musical surprises of the year in Tromatic Reflexxions (coming out in June). "Fledermaus Can't Get It," appropriately both the album's opener and its first single, wraps Smith's urgent delivery in a corrosive funk. "The Rhinohead" veers closest to Fall territory with its rockin' "Keep Me Hangin' On" soul stomp. Pursuant to that, Mark E. recounts a night where he hijacks a Sven Vath DJ set and the club gets "Flooded" with the sounds of robotic garage and bass emanations. "That Sound Wiped," a reconstituted version of the collaboration that gave birth to this project, could have rubbed shoulders at the Paradise Garage with Tom Tom Club and Larry Levan.

The music is simultaneously visceral and cerebral, both some of the catchiest material from Andi and Jan and some of the finest poetry from Mark since the turn of the century. Around every corner (or CD index), there's a wealth of surprises as both parties seem completely liberated by the collaboration, Mark's punctual delivery flourishing in the club and disco inflections and the music finding new depth and dimension with the constant narrative companionship.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/HMrX8NeLF3o" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download Of The Week (video) - Benjy Ferree

			<itunes:author>Domino Recording Co.</itunes:author>

http://www.myspace.com/benjyferree
http://www.dominorecordco.us

Film is a large part of Ferree's identity and it seeps into his songs both lyrically (Watership Down and Magnolia) and spritually (Peckinpah, Cassavetes, Lynch). ’ÄúIn The Countryside’Äù reveals Ferree's lighter side as it draws on the slapstick humor of the silent film era, recalling Keaton, Lloyd and Arbuckle.

Shot on rich 16mm in gorgeous sepia tones, "In The Countryside" evokes the old-tyme feel of the songs title with the added twist of zombie boxers, turn-of-the-century joysticks and Latvian subtitles.

Benjy Ferree Leaving The Nest is out now.

Raves from the press:

Ferree's bluesy inflection brings to mind a more opaque Ray Davies of the Kinks, or sometimes even his idol Tom Waits. The lyrics are weary, propped
up with an almost forced optimism... -Associated Press

Leaving the Nest," is a charming piece of backporch Americana that brought to mind the likes of Iron & Wine, Beachwood Sparks and even a bit of Bright
Eyes. - Washington Post

Q ’Äì Q Recommends 4/5*
Crafts hook-heavy melodic pop songs in the classic mold of The Kinks and Marc Bolan [injecting] each number on this debut with a scriptwriter’Äôs ear for narrative, inviting the listener into a deliciously mysterious world.

Uncut ’Äì 3/5*
A curious rattle of junk-blues and scuzzed up folk.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/ymxAof_loKw" height="1" width="1"/>

ubber off dancing feet. Remixes by Audion and James Holden will see the light of day in the form of two limited 12"s, but you'll get a sneak preview here of the former (see below).
Steve Reid made his recording debut in 1964, aged 19, playing on Martha and the Vandellas’Äò "Dancing in the Street."¬Ý He went on to play with legendary figures in avant garde jazz such as Miles Davis, Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers and David Murray, but also in soul, such as James Brown, Dionne Warwick and Chaka Khan. In the late '60s, he spent three years in west Africa, where he studied African rhythms and played with Fela Kuti.
Kieran Hebden developed Four Tet’Äôs sample-based collage of jazz, folk and soul textures in downtime between recording with Fridge, the band he started with schoolfriends Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers. After Dialogue was released by Output, Kieran went on to produce Pause, Rounds and Everything Ecstatic for Domino.

Dominocast - Download of the Week (video) - Clinic

			<itunes:author>Domino Recording Co.</itunes:author>

Clinic¬Ýare distinctive in the way that The Fall, The Residents or Missy Elliot are distinctive, it’Äôs hard to mistake their sonic fingerprint for anyone else’Äôs, yet because they keep exploring the outer limits of their thing, they always sound fresh.¬Ý¬ÝThis time, they have made a party record they’Äôre calling Visitations, produced by Gareth Jones (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Wire, Depeche Mode), who worked with the band on¬ÝInternal Wrangler. Granted, it would be a chuffing peculiar party, but memorable: Screaming Jay Hawkins mixing cocktails, Sly Stone doing the lights and Joe Meek running the cloakroom. The music, of course, would be our heroes’Äô signature bad-dream bubblegum, Bo Diddley playing "Rowche Rumble" and "To Know Him Is To Love Him", produced by Lee Perry and Martin Hannett.

If this is your first time at the Clinic ball, here’Äôs the story so far:¬ÝThis quartet from Liverpool exploded into life about 9 years ago, making an instant impact with a homemade single "IPC Sub Editors Dictate Our Youth" and a clutch of EPs. Signing to Domino, they released their brilliant debut long player, Internal Wrangler in 2000, toured with Radiohead and appeared at Scott Walker’Äôs Meltdown Festival. In 2002, their second album, Walking With Thee,¬Ýearned them lavish praise in the US (including a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album), where they appeared often, before recording the dense and spooky Winchester Cathedral, released in 2004.

Indeed, there’Äôs a definite sense that Clinic are having a gas here. And that may be because they recorded Visitations themselves at their own recently completed studio in their hometown of Liverpool. The new space allowed them total freedom to experiment and try wild stuff without worrying about the cost. The renewed sense of independence seeped into the lyrics, some of which are among their most upbeat and optimistic yet.

Clinic will be coming to entertain the North American masses in March.

Dominocast - Junior Boys

			<itunes:author>Domino Recording Co.</itunes:author>

www.SoThisIsGoodbye.com

Junior Boys are Canadian duo Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus.
¬Ý
A pair of mysterious 12 inch singles of smart, crisp electro hooks heralded their arrival in 1995. After a misspent year in the Midlands of England, where he immersed himself in the burgeoning UK dance culture of the time, Greenspan had retreated to his blue collar hometown of Hamilton, Ontario with a head full of beats, where, with original partner Johnny Dark, he set about writing the debut Junior Boys album, ’ÄòLast Exit’Äô, finished after Dark’Äôs departure with mix engineer Didemus.
¬Ý
Delivering on the promise of those early tracks, ’ÄòLast Exit’Äô was in the long tradition of sonically rich pop that blends emotionally charged songcraft with experimental form; uniting New Order’Äôs depth of feeling with Timbaland’Äôs stuttering beats and the 2-Step genre’Äôs digital bass, to astonished critical acclaim.
¬Ý
Today, Junior Boys aren’Äôt so much myth as a revelation. Greenspan and Didemus re-emerge in 2006 with a pop statement that is being heralded as one of the albums of the year. ’ÄòSo This Is Goodbye’Äô is a work that exhibits a confident mix of focus, clarity and ambition. Leaving behind the dense beats of ’ÄòLast Exit’Äô songs such as the upbeat single ’ÄòIn the Morning’Äô and their cover of Frank Sinatra’Äôs ’ÄòWhen No One Cares’Äô draw upon their love of the classic pop of artists like David Sylvian and Bryan Ferry, fusing their distinct brand of melancholia with a sonic distillation of the last twenty five years of electronic pop, into one contemporary album.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/plIjBXLZ-Jg" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Josef K

			<itunes:author>Josef K</itunes:author>

www.DominoRecordCo.us
www.DominoRecordCo.com

In our continuing series of releases documenting the best of avant Scottish pop of the early '80s, Domino is privileged to be releasing¬ÝEntomology, a comprehensive anthology of Josef K, the Edinburgh quartet whose legend has far outlived grown well beyond the band's own brief lifespan.

Excerpted from the liner notes for Entomology, penned by the inimitable Paul Morley:

There needed to be a gloomy remotely intimate glam pop group named after a character created by Franz Kafka who detuned their pained, pining guitars like the Velvet Underground, who screwed up dance beats with as much nimble knowingness and/or amateurish exuberance as Devo, who faced up to long lasting reality with as much sad, mad grace as Magazine, who got stuck into logic as defiantly as Pere Ubu, who had spent a lot of time watching Television and listening to the first six or seven songs written by Buzzcocks.
¬Ý
They took themselves very seriously whilst circling the idea that fun was a very peculiar notion.
¬Ý
They were The Sound of Young Scotland, together with Orange Juice, whose guitars were also radiant and brittle, whose rhythms were also scrubbed and blunt, whose vocals were also proud and serious, but who sounded like another group completely.
¬Ý
A touch more rational. A little less glaring. A splinter less uptight. Lacking, perhaps, the art for art’Äôs sake element that some of us swooned over, and which we see explicitly echoed in they way, say, the popular Franz Ferdinand express themselves.
¬Ý
Their own men.

In their own special time.
¬Ý
Who would know when it was time to quit.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/-kTZapnPsv8" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Download of the Week - Benjy Ferree

			<itunes:author>Domino Recording Co.</itunes:author>

Benjy Ferree's musical coming-out followed an aborted attempt at an acting career, which brought a surreal existence in Hollywood to a close. He returned home to the Mid-Atlantic, more enlightened, more skilled on guitar and found work tending bar at DC's Black Cat nightclub. There he heeded the encouragement of new friends, Brendan Canty (Fugazi) among them, and began to focus on the songs he had been writing for his own personal enjoyment.

Leaving The Nest is the fruits of that encouragement and those life experiences, with a surefooted timelessness in an era of trends being cycled and recycled through at an exhausting speed. Musical and historical ghosts of The South haunt the corners of this album like a Faulknerian travelogue while bringing to mind the works of Terrence Malick, whose movies leave it to the viewer to find meaning in all the ambiguous beauty.

’ÄúFerree is content to let his music do the talking, and it’Äôs not hard to see why... a charming piece of backporch Americana that brought to mind the likes of Iron & Wine, Beachwood Sparks and even a bit of Bright Eyes.’Äù - Washington Post<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/2iubS62eiLk" height="1" width="1"/>

Dominocast - Juana Molina Videocast

			<itunes:author>Domino Records</itunes:author>

Argentinean singer/songwriter Juana Molina is beloved for her visionary artistry, drawing a line between traditional and modern music, through an electro-acoustic hybrid that finds inspiration in nature. Juana breaks away from the traditional Latin sound by eschewing convention and opting for a more experimental sound and outlook. Ms. Molina’Äôs mesmerizing performances add a visual element to her ’Äúprocess’Äù’Äîreal-time compositions unfold live as she layers and loops acoustic guitars, traditional percussion touches, electronic textures and her disarming vocals.

Quietly, Molina has been at work on a recording collaboration with Devendra Banhart, his Vetiver comrade, Andy Cabic and percussionist Otto Hauser (Espers/Vetiver). Producer, Thom Monahan is guiding the project at his 1+1=1 Studio. The impressive results are expected for public consumption in the coming months.

The album ultimately comes to epitomize future classic, too real to belong to this plastic era yet so innovative the sound seems to have come from tomorrow. ’Äì Interview
Much like the way Bjork’Äôs music seems otherworldly, but so very earthly and natural as well, Son seems to channel raw human emotion into lush, tasteful, and layered folk songs. -Skyscraper

Dominocast - Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid

			<itunes:author>Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid</itunes:author>

A candid conversation between master percussionist, Reid and electronic composer, Hebden. The two discuss their collaboration, "The Exchange Sessions (Vols. I & II)", their inspiration, direction and aspirations.

Kieran, you probably know from his more popular moniker of Four Tet or perhaps from his time from the seminal post-rock instrumentalists Fridge. Steve Reid on the other hand, you have most de’Ä¢nitely heard before and you probably don¬ƒˆ¾t even know it. Martha & The Vandellas ’ÄúDancing In The Streets?’Äù That¬ƒˆ¾s Steve on the drumstool along with countless other Motown sessions. From there, Steve¬ƒˆ¾s professional resumˆ© has included stints recording and performing with James Brown, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and a lengthy tenure in the Sun Ra Arkestra along with his own solo releases (recently re-documented by the hip London-based Soul Jazz label). So, what¬ƒˆ¾s this meeting of rhythmic minds hold for the listener?

Think of it as a duet of electricity and percussion. It’Äòs a free jazz odyssey sure to melt minds as much as knock down barriers. But never fear, it’Äôs quite a compelling listen with melodic music textures and the steady rhythms of emanating from the traps. Steve and Kieran have just completed a whirlwind seven date tour in the US and for those who were lucky enough to witness it, it was truly something very special seeing the joy of musical communication
between these two masters.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Dominocast/~4/_Y9ibFPIzLI" height="1" width="1"/>
