Last month we had a student intern, Xavier Aguon, from St. Augustine High School in our office. Xavier shadowed some of the employees at domusstudio and had the opportunity to work on a project of his own. Here is a summary of his experience this past month:

“During the month of January 2019, I was given the opportunity to intern at domusstudio. I had a wonderful experience and I was able to work with great people who were genuinely interested in teaching me about their profession. One new thing that I have learned about a career in architecture is that it is an all-encompassing profession. Unlike many professions that have straightforward agendas, the work of an architect is not straightforward. There is constant back and forth among architects and their consultants. Architects do not simply design buildings but have to ensure that their buildings work properly and are correctly built. While the process may be cumbersome and time-consuming, seeing a completed project in the physical world is a gratifying experience.

After my experience interning at domusstudio, I am still interested in pursuing a career in architecture. The experience I have gained at my internship has exposed me to the work of architects and has given me an understanding of what architects actually do. There are elements of work that I had suspected architects engaged in, such as the creative design aspect. What I had not expected was the amount of detail architects had to explain and how vital communication was when working with others. Building anything requires a great amount of persistence and dedication, but once a project is “complete”, it makes the effort all the more worthwhile.”

Raymond Center for the Performing Arts at St. Augustine High School

On September 12, 2018 the Very Reverend Bishop John Dolan blessed the newly completed Raymond Center for the Performing Arts at St. Augustine High School. The celebration included a dedication Mass, luncheon and a musical presentation by the St. Augustine/AOLP Concert Band. The 389 seat auditorium is actually a renovation of the school’s old gymnasium. The original gym was built in 1953 and has accommodated athletic events, school Mass and dances. The gym also acted as a triage morgue during the PSA crash in 1978. The renovation has transformed the facility into a Performing Arts Center, complete with a state of the art theater, band room, rehearsal spaces and a media lab. Re-Using existing resources is a green approach. It avoids landfill, minimizes production of new materials and preserves the memories and spirit of a beloved facility. The acoustics of the space are spectacular, and we cannot wait to see and hear the magic that the students will create in this awesome facility. We are proud to have been a part of this amazing transformation.

A Visit From Congresswoman Susan Davis

Congresswoman Davis and John Pyjar

A couple of weeks ago, our studio had a guest visit from Congresswoman Susan Davis. Congresswoman Davis toured our new office and spoke to John Pyjar, one of the partners at domusstudio, about the process of renovating the Brandon-Beaver Building (originally designed by Homer Delawie). We were very happy to have Congresswoman Davis at our office and to share our journey with her. You can read the full article on her blog here.

Church of the Resurrection

Last week the Church of the Resurrection in Escondido was dedicated by the Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego. domusstudio acted as the Construction Manager on this project, working with the Parish, Questar Construction and Kluger Architects. The Sanctuary was phase 3 of the Parish’s campus project. The new Church is 19,800 SF total, seating 1,100 people.

In Catholic Churches, the dedication consists of the blessing from the Diocesan Bishop. Here are some photos of the Bishop of San Diego, Robert McElroy, blessing the Altar.

The liturgical pieces were done by Artesanos don Bosco in Peru, including the Reredos, Altar, Ambo, Baptismal Font, Stations of the Cross, Stained Glass Windows, Ambry and Front Door. These pieces were a combination of fused glass, carved wood, stonework, glass mosaics and carved wood. Artesanos don Bosco are a group of Missionaries who train the local people of the Peruvian Andes in woodworking, stone carving, metal fabrication and glass making to create these beautiful liturgical pieces. https://www.artesanosdonbosco.com/

Lawrance Contemporary Furniture Grand Opening

On May 19th, Lawrance Contemporary Furniture in Encinitas had its grand opening! domusstudio worked with Howard Haimsohn of Lawrance to transform the Total Women’s Gym space into a new showroom for Lawrance. The existing space consisted of multiple individual rooms with 8-foot ceiling heights, a studio space and a spa. We removed all of the interior walls to the exposed 18-foot ceiling and added some partition walls for the furniture display.

When you enter, you are welcomed in through a 10-foot high pivot door. The partition walls are placed with purpose to help the user navigate the space without getting lost and to be able to walk through the whole store without missing anything.

Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot Dedication

On June 1st and 2nd, we celebrated the dedication of Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot in Irvine, CA. The project consisted of a renovation of their existing two-story building for Classroom/Meeting Administrative functions and the construction of a new one-story building for Sanctuary/Social Hall/Administrative functions with associated site improvements, parking and courtyard. The design for the Sanctuary & Social Hall incorporates bi-folding doors that open the interior spaces to the exterior courtyard and allows for flexibility and transparency of the spaces.

We teamed with dTank on the Bimah furnishings, including the Table, the Ark and the Torah Stand. The Eternal Flame was a custom light fixture done in collaboration with Gibson Lighting.

The dedication service on Friday night had over 800 people in attendance and over 500 people attended the Saturday evening celebration.

We are thankful for the trust that the Congregation placed in domusstudio and we look forward to the impact their new facility will have on their ministry growth.

Ground Breaking Ceremony in Hawaii

Principal, David Pfeifer of @domusstudio was blessed to participate in a Ground Breaking ceremony for a new Parish Center for Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Parish in Waipahu, HI on the island of Oahu. This was a collaborative effort with the Honolulu based architecture firm InForm Design. The Parish Center will provide the church with a new banquet hall, as well as much-needed meeting rooms and a new office. The design takes advantage of the local climate by opening to the outdoors and shaping a new outdoor patio and grassy courtyard.

The ceremony was officiated by Msgr. Gary Secor, Vicar General of the Diocese of Honolulu and Fr. William Kunisch and Honolulu City Councilman Brandon Elefente. The rite included the ceremonial turning of the soil using O’o sticks, a tool used by native farmers. Cultures vary, but our thirst for Christ’s love is universal.

Material Boards That Enhance Experiences

Selecting finishes and putting a material board together is more than just finding a color scheme. It’s about selecting materials and finishes that will improve the quality of the space and enhance the user’s experience. At domusstudio, the user is the focal point of every project. We select finishes that enrich the spaces that we design and we strive for timeless solutions which will not go out of fashion or deteriorate, thus preserving value to our owner occupied projects.

Colors and materials can have an effect on our mood, productivity level and possibly even our appetite. There are different factors that should be taken into consideration when putting a material board together, such as the function of the space, the size of the space, the amount of time that people will be spending in the space, the age group of the users and the mood that you want to give off.

A material board for a preschool is going to be very different than a material board for a retirement home. Similarly, a material board for a hospital is going to be very different than a material board for a restaurant. Thoughtful consideration is put into the materials and finishes selected by domusstudio.

International Women’s Day!

On International Women’s Day, we not only celebrate the women in our studio, but all the women around the world. In the profession of architecture, there has long been a gender gap in the workplace. We are very proud to say that 8 out of the 20 domusstudio members are female. The collaboration and team effort among all of the studio members is a big factor to our success.

Zaha Hadid, one of the most influential women in architecture, was asked to write a postcard to her younger self…this is what she wrote: “Your success will not be determined by your gender or your ethnicity but only by the scope of your dreams.”

The Sacred Visual Arts Display Reception at Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian

Recently domusstudio had the pleasure of being a part of the Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian Arts Forum Installation: Glorious Churches – A Metamorphosis of Light and Space. A total of three models the office created were displayed in the Church’s multi-purpose space that the office designed to be used for events of the like. These included a Malibu Presbyterian Church competition model, an Our Lady of Mount Carmel model, and a Gloria Day Lutheran Church preliminary competition model. While domusstudio takes pride in its use of computer rendering technology, the studio also thrives at the chance to craft something by hand in order to give both ourselves and our clients a better visual understanding of how a proposed design functions.

The Church was nice enough to have a small appreciation reception to thank the studio for donating work for viewing, which Lew Dominy attended Tuesday May 20th. Jeanette Poole, who helped plan the event, remarked, “Although our installations are small and humble compared to professional galleries, we put a lot of heart, thought and planning into each and every installation and we feel this one has been received extremely well by our congregation.” The studio was elated to participate in this church community event and to see the space in use. domusstudio looks forward to each and every opportunity that grants us a new kind of connection within our community.
