Likewise the two corporations acquired for cash, by issuing stock, and otherwise, control of many competing corporations, now going concerns, with plants in various states, and Porto Rico, which manufactured, bought, sold, and distributed tobacco products or related articles throughout the United States and foreign countries, and took from the parties in interest covenants not to engage in the tobacco business.

In 1899 the American Company caused the organization of the Porto Rican-American Tobacco Company, which took over the partnership business Rucabado y Portela,-manufacturer of cigars and cigarettes,-with covenants not to compete. These companies became consolidated in the late 1800’s as Puerto Rico Tobacco Corporation, our company name today.

The most reputed tobacco growing district of Vuelta Abajo became the major theater of operations during the 1897 and 1898 campaigns of the second war for independence (1895-1898). The conflict dislocated production and the relocation policies of the Spanish regime severely constrained the time that growers and work hands could dedicate to the plantations.

At the end of the war, large areas of the heavy and sandy clay soils were barren and laid to waste. Seed for the 1898-99 harvest was scarce and needed to be imported from other areas as corporate and individual planters required excellent seed to maintain the markets and international reputation of their leaf. According to the authoritative Angel González del Valle growers generally imported it from Puerto Rico. Tobacco leaf was the third leading export before the U.S. invasion and, soon after, it would be second only to sugar. Tobacco cultivation and growing in Puerto Rico experienced three major changes during the second half of the nineteenth century. The first refers to the nature of the commodity produced in the mountainsides and the narrow river-valleys of the eastern highlands.

The leaf that slowly ascended and spread to the Cordillera Central was not the leaf consumed domestically as chaws of tobacco and the inferior grades exported for the inexpensive markets in Europe; it was a superior leaf, if employed, in the manufacture of cigars. For instance, a nineteenth-century observer considered the leaf from Cidra excellent and, as early as 1878, merchants and manufacturers, who were then called "fabricants", identified the tobacco of the highland municipality of Sabana del Palmar by the trade name of Comerío and considered it the best in the island.

Brian Jackson, above and Carl Cornwell (with the sax in pic on right) are two of my oldest friends. They are both extraordinary examples of humility in its original form. Like the man said, the best is never heard. In their cases it's a little different. Together they have hundreds of original songs, they both play flute, clarinet, piano, sax and more.... they are both prolific poets and prose writers as well as composer's of music.

Both of them are cold blooded geniuses whose own talent has taken each of them by surprise.

Carl was one of the first people I met in college. His dad, Dr. Cornwell, taught psychology at the school and was a very talented artist. Brian joined us early on as well. He was seventeen when he showed up.

There just isn't enough space in a Blog to start listing all their accomplishements. I just wated to bring them to your attention and if you like jazz, then be sure to look them up on FB and everywhere else on the internet.

HAVANA, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy decimated the Cuban coffee crop and delivered a major setback to renovation of old plantations when it ripped through the eastern part of the country late last week, according to scattered media reports.

The storm left between 20 percent and 30 percent of the crop on the ground, damaged processing centers and roads and felled thousands of trees upon plantations as it pummeled the Sierra Maestra Mountains, where 92 percent of the crop is grown.

The coffee harvest runs from September through January, but peaks in October and November.

Coffee production was already expected to weigh in at some 5,300 tonnes of semiprocessed beans, compared with 7,100 tonnes in the previous season and an initial plan of 8,500 tonnes.

Reuters now estimates output will be below 4,000 tonnes, the lowest in more than a century.

The official Granma newspaper reported on Monday that Guantanamo province, the country's second producer after Santiago de Cuba, "lost 174,475 cans of beans" and "47 processing centers were damaged".

Cuba often reports coffee output in cans, with 525 cans equal to a tonne.

Still-to-be-quantified losses were also reported in the eastern provinces of Granma and Holguin, the country's third and fourth producers.

The devastation was far worse in Santiago, which took the brunt of the storm and where losses were still being tallied.

"Songo-La Maya is an agricultural municipality ... The initial figures for coffee, its main crop, indicate a loss of 84,000 cans, while 4,500 hectares of plantations and another 650 in development are damaged due to the trees that fell on them," the province's newspaper, Sierra Maestra, reported on Sunday.

There are eight coffee-producing municipalities in Santiago de Cuba.

The National Information Agency, reporting from the Cruce de los Banos municipality on Saturday, said: "Initial estimates by municipal authorities indicate more than 300 hectares of coffee plantations damaged by falling trees and dozens of tonnes of mature beans felled and washed away."

How much of the remaining and now quickly ripening coffee beans could be picked and processed, given the destruction Sandy left behind, was unclear.

Communist-run Cuba's 35,000 growers, in exchange for low-interest government credits and subsidized supplies, must sell all of their coffee to the state.

The country's plantations, which at the time of the 1959 revolution produced 60,000 tonnes of coffee, have steadily declined ever since.

Cuban President Raul Castro, as part of his efforts to improve food production and cut imports, has pointed to coffee as a crop ripe for increased attention and growth.

Cuba imported 18,000 tonnes of semi-processed beans from Vietnam in 2010 at a cost of $38 million, and slightly less in 2011, though no figures for that year are available.

The state has leased abandoned plantations over the last few years to hundreds of individuals to grow coffee and has nearly tripled the price it pays farmers for their beans.

Millions of dollars have been poured into replanting most of the country's 74,000 hectares (183,000 acres) of plantations, which have been neglected for decades, and improving processing facilities. (Reporting by Marc Frank; Editing by Dale Hudson)

The Taino Indians owned all the land from Hispanola to Aruba (Cuba to Aruba). The island chain was called Borinken, a name preserved in Puerto Rico even now. The Taino Indians grew tobacco on all the islands and annually had a gathering in Puerto Rico called Sik'ar (Sikar). It was here that Columbus saw tobacco rolled and smoked in tubes for the first time in history. He took the products and practice of rolling back to spain as "cigarros".

THE FIRST BIG SMOKE

The first big smoke was called "Sik'ar" by the Taino Indians of Puerto Rico. The Taino Indians were part of the arawak indian culture that made their home in the caribbean islands. They dominated the area between cuba and aruba.

around 4,000 BC They also invented BBQ and the Hammock

Sik'ar was a gathering of all indians from all the islands. They would BBQ smoked meat, trade cigars and cured tobacco, tobacco seeds, their version of rum (from coconut milk) and settled land disputes, trade disagreements, charted new islands, raised armies to fight the caribe indians and generally had a convention and at conventions you understand people tend to have a good time. The Taino also invented the hammock. They invented the first cigars. Columbus saw tobacco rolled into tubes for the first time ever at this festival. He called the tubes of smoking tobacco "cigarros" after the festival where they were found in abundance (Sik'ar).

The Taino Inidans used stone molds to make the cigars. They would roll the tobacco into bunches, ties them with strings from leaves and bark and place them between two halves of hollowed stone molds. The stone molds were wrapped tightly with string and buried until the next Sik'ar. The stone molds were retrieved, the strings were cut and the bundled cigar was wrapped in any dry vegetable leaf (most of the time another tobacco variety) and smoked.

Needless to say thousands of cigars changed hands and were smoked. Imagine that !

Wrapper Leaves are finishing leaves. The Filler and Binder (watch the blog this week) are really the heart and flavor of the cigar. No cigar flavor is added or subtracted (unless extreemely and artificially flavored or smoke cured) by the Wrapper Leaf.

The filler and binder burn through the center of the cigar. The wrapper "burns away" into the air and does not add much to the aroma, flavor or consistency of the cigar. It's quality however must be good and the leaf must be cured exactly as the binder and filler to allow all three set of leaves to burn together evenly and smoothly.

When the curing process is not monitored correctly the cigar will burn faster on one side than the other regardless of how its lit. Even if lit unevenly, a quality cigar will begin to "catch up" to faster burning areas and start to burn evenly after a few minutes.

A Don Collins Cigar will hold two inches of pure white ash, burning perfectly, even if you are ridinig backwards on a Harley Davidson Electra Glide at 100 miles an hour southbound down Santa Monica Boulevard in a strong pacific wind.
