A genuine war leader would have saved millions of American lives w one bullet. Saved countless Gazans w one bullet.

It's the Oil Prices Stupid!: Inflation

So much talking about how we are replaying the 1980s, economically we are back in the 1970s. They called the 1970s the Age of Limitations. Reagan ran on rolling back the Welfare State, blaming it for the runaway inflation and for permitting the survival of the Unworthy and Criminal. Not helping matters was the Father of the Welfare State, LBJ was conducting the Vietnam War like his own personal game of Risk in the basement w/out raising taxes to offset the economic drain of dropping more munitions on a tiny South Asian country than had been dropped on all sides in Europe during WWII. Ask anyone what else they remember about the late 1970s, they will tell you spiraling gas prices and gas lines from the OPEC (Oil Producing Eastern Countries) Oil and Gas Embargo.

Maybe at first blush the two may not seem connected, the Embargo and the Inflation of the 1970s. Maybe I would have thought so too if I hadn't worked in a grocery store deli for entirely too long. I became aware of a pattern. Oil prices spike, our prices go up, and we quit offering extras like chips or an apple w/ our sandwiches. Oil prices go back down, prices for what we sold stayed up. No chips or apples w/ sandwiches. Normally, inflation is the product of increasing Demand, especially when Demand outstrips production. Inflation from Oil price spikes inflates the price of everything that requires fuel to transport or requires oil in their manufacturing process. All set apart from Demand. In fact, it is the key to the puzzle of Stagflation. A stagnant or receding economy w/ high unemployment and spiraling inflation. Oil increases prices w/ out the benefit of additional Demand. Jimmy Carter's failed solution was to treat is as though it was driven by Demand and excess govt spending on the Welfare State and so embarked on a program of cuts to govt spending.

Reagan was elected in 1980, on a wave of discontent w/ Carter's economic policies and the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Reagan's election was one of the worst things that ever happened to America. He took Carter's govt spending cuts and turned them up to 11. He also gutted the social safety net and ended, among other things, federal support and programs for public education.

Here is a neat thing about Inflation caused by Demand. If you destroy the economy, things get REAL cheap because nobody can afford them. This is how Republicans get their record as Inflation fighters. Nobody has more zeal for destroying America's economy that Republicans.

Reagan led a campaign of busting labor unions, most famously the Air Traffic Controllers (my grandma, racist and bigot that she was, Hated Reagan because she was a Union woman who worked for the city) and oversaw the Off-shoring of American manufacturing which then led to disastrous De-Industrialization. What had been black Middle Class communities supported largely by manufacturing were devastated almost instantly. Add an illegal Central American War funded by the selling of arms to "American Hostage Takers" in Iran and dumping tons of Central American cocaine into these communities, you get the urban Hellscape that was the Inner Cities of the 1980s and 1990s.

While Reagan was terrifying voters w/ Black folks, few recognized that their futures working in manufacturing had just been foreclosed on as well. They had the buffer of the Housing benefit of the GI Bill which had been denied Black WWII veterans which had been the basis for generational wealth. To fix that little detail, Reagan thought up the little notion of Reverse Mortgages to help strip out the remaining equity held by these families. They were just as fucked, ultimately, as the communities suffering the scourge of the Crack Epidemic and gang wars. Their fall was just a whole lot slower w/ far less militarized police response and incarceration and violent death. They still have meth to make ends meet.

Supply Side Economics, championed by Reagan, replaced the stability of a middle class based on manufacturing+retirement benefits w/ a low paying no benefits Service Economy coupled w/ cheap goods manufactured elsewhere for pennies on the dollar which Americans still can't really afford, but they can buy on credit. What could possibly go wrong?

Can everyone in the class see how we went from 1970s Stagflation to the destruction of the Post-WWII middle class in the 1980s? Good!

This takes us to today. Republicans are campaigning on Inflation again and blaming president Biden, which is hilarious given that the last Republican president attempted an armed overthrow of the federal govt. Something about their priorities is just a little...off.

Today we don't have an OPEC Embargo fucking w/ oil prices. We have the Russian invasion of Ukraine and most of the world an Embargo against them, denying them a market for their Petro-Rubles. If we support the Defense of Ukraine, we must recognize that the inflated oil and gas prices and concommittant climb in Inflation is an unavoidable sacrifice we are all making in Ukraine's Defense. And, oh yeah. Fuck Putin! The effect is still the same for us as it as in the 1970s. Complicating this is an economy coming out of Covid deep freeze which Republicans still call a win because everything, including gas, was dirt cheap. Things always are when no one can afford them.

Part of the problem is in the mindset of the American public. Social cohesion has been melting away like the middle class since Reagan got elected over 40 years ago. We imbided the message that you can have anything, so long as those weaker and more vulnerable than you pay for it. The garden of state blooms riotously when you keep it fertilized w/ corpses. We are now a nation at war w/ itself. There is no sense that We Are All in this Together.

In the past, during WWII, the Greatest Generation grew Victory Gardens, had war material donation drives, bought War Bonds, and rationed gas. Skip ahead to the Bush/Cheney administration tried to pay for the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan w/ TAX CUTS! Good God! How fucking stupid can you get?

The ethos post-Reagan, abetted by presidents Clinton and Obama, is that America doesn't pay. We don't do self-sacrifice. You only sacrifice the vulnerable. Thus the otherwise Republican peculiarity of preferring public policies that produce American bodycounts. This was taken to unholy new heights by Trump and heralded as the Way of the Future by presidential hopefuls Abbott and Desantis. It would heartwarming to see Trump really embrace the lessons of Hitler and slaughter all of his competitors on his own side and their followers in his own reenactment of the Night of the Long Knives.

To those unfamiliar w/ me, I am calling Trump a Nazi and the current incarnation of the Republican Party, America First, a fundamental American Nazi Party. It had been since Lindbergh and Patrick Buchanan. America has no idea of the trouble it is in.

Inflation! Just like last time, in the 1970s, Republicans are running on being able to tame inflation. And they can, and it works. To the extent that the inflation is caused by increased Demand and Economic activity, it can be rolled back by Destroying the Economy.

Wall Street Crash 1987, caused by Junk Bonds because evidently the best way to soup your car up is by cutting the brakes...talking about Stock Market deregulation here, exacerbated under Bill Clinton who primed the economy for Bush-43's Wall Street Meltdown in 2008, not Junk Bonds but Toxic Assets, w/ Mortgage Backed Securities leading to a foreclosure crisis that destroyed the inherited wealth of millions of American and kicked millions more out of their home. Who this did work out well for is monsters like Steve Mnuchin who bought up all those foreclosed properties for a song and continued to use Mortgage Backed Securities during the Trump administration to artificially pump up the Stock Market, despite their propensity to explode into Toxic Assets and mass home foreclosures. Though given the malice of the Trump administration, it is easy to see how they may have expected them to self-destruct when Trump is no longer in office ergo, not their problem. A neat little economic time bomb for someone else to deal with. A feature, not a bug. Trump gave the nation a Master Class on denying the benefit of the doubt to assholes like Mnuchin and himself. You can count on them to do the very worst thing for the very worst reasons...and there is even more and worse they've done you may NEVER know about. This is why the Trump Presidential Library must be an Evidentiary Library where investigators and forensic accountants are employed full time for decades to bring to light the full extent of Trump's criming. Additional crimes discovered will be speedily adjudicated and the time for each new sentence will be added to the rolling total of his prison term. Otherwise will we find ourselves w/out a country. Not kidding even a little bit.

The Republicans will destroy Demand to bring down prices. Great, except now you are poor and looking at cheap goods that you can't in good conscience afford.

What Republicans WON'T do is tackle the other half of the Stagflation equation: Oil price spikes.

And why would they? They are the party of the Oil Men. Huge price spikes mean big profits, which must be protected even as the nation starves and freezes for their prosperity. Even as the human habitability of the world becomes matter of grave doubt in the near term. There is just too much money to be made destroying the Earth NOT TO.

Pay attention kids. The prosperity of the oil companies comes at the expense of literally everybody else. Oil prices spike inflation in ways that can't be controlled by demand and it is rapidly degrading the environment. Everything is sacrificed to the Energy Cartels. Our economy. Our environment.

This is one of the golden calves worshipped by Republican, only the gun lobby requires more and bloodier sacrifices, creating a business model based on mass murder. For supporting these industries and their demands, the Republican Party is a Death Cult. Want to prove it to yourself? Make a drinking game out of it. Keep a bottle of moonshine on hand or other hard liquor. And take a shot whenever a Republican says or does something that is life affirming. In support of keeping ordinary Americans alive and healthy. And no. The Pro-Life Position is the fetishization of the Fish stage of Human Development. It ends at baby's first breath and does not a fucking good thing for the Already Born! That doesn't count.

Even Obama was bought by the Energy Cartels. Promoted the lie about Clean Coal, promoted Natural Gas obtained by Fracking which caused a new kind of pollution in Oklahoma and Texas. Seismic Pollution! Earthquakes! He promoted Natural Gas as a "bridge" to renewables, making federal fleets run on the cursed shit. Like moving from heroin to morphine to shake an opiate addiction. And then there were all those bomb trains, substandard trains hauling crude oil that was extras spicy because it was cheaper not to stabilize it, or lower its volatility before shipping. Obama was unswerving from his Reaganomics conviction that foxes guard hen houses best and businesses must regulate themselves instead of the govt.

Lastly, does anyone remember how devoid of testicular fortitude Obama was during the Deep Water Horizon disaster? BP bought up all the law enforcement in Louisiana and a few federal agencies to protect their interests while that ecosystem died and the fishing industry that depended on it. They dumped Correxit into the waters, further poisoning everything thing that lived there including the people who handled it or came in contact w/ it. OSHA was nowhere to be seen. When Obama told them to stop, they laughed in his face. Weak.

If we would take the inflationary boot of Energy Cartels off of the throat of America and give our grandchildren and great grandchildren a world they could SURVIVE, we must do what the Republican are constitutionally incapable off. Shaking off their yoke of carbon dependence. Electric vehicles remove the vig of the oil industry from every load they transport, lowering prices, assuming companies don't just pocket the savings while passing the same old high prices on to customers. Cynical? I told you that the Benefit of the Doubt is a currency no longer used. Neither is Good Faith.

So when Republicans talk shit about Inflation, ask them what they are doing to change America's crippling addiction to Oil. It's not even that hard a fix. We just withdraw all tax support to anything involving Carbon Fuel. They have the money and the resources to turn the corner and lead in the area of developing renewable resources. Solar, wind, power transmission, energy storage technology. It is a smaller leap than the transformation from railway lines to communications...telegraph and telephone, for any company to make!

This would end the dependence we have which places us at the mercy of foreign actors and amoral conglomerates that see the end of Human habitation as an acceptable price of doing business.

On the policy side of the Inflation issue, there is something we can do to ameliorate today's intolerable economic pain. Raise the federal minimum wage, for all Americans! Between offshore manufacturing and automation, production had spiralled unimpeded since Reagan. In 1960 dollars, adjusted for inflation, minimum wage should be over $20/hr. Of course employers don't like that they'd have to pay their employees more. But what they lose sight of is that their WORST PAID CUSTOMER, denizens of the $1.00 Menu, will also be making $20/hr. What CAN'T they afford?

One of the idiosyncrasies of Supply Side is that it rewards cost cutting up and down the supply chain in manufacturing, especially w/ regard to wages. Supply-side. Cheap goods sold for maximum profit.

But there is an inescapable reality. When people don't have money in their pockets, they don't buy goods and services. Businesses w/ out customers close. Cities built around their factories became ghost towns inhabited by those who were too poor to escape. The businesses that served the factory workers then closed as well. Swelling the ranks of the unemployed.

Bill Clinton ended cash Welfare the same way Reagan ended programs and funding for public education. One underappreciated fact is that money in the pockets of the unemployed is life support for the businesses they patronize. Those businesses died because of Bill Clinton.

Reaganomics maximizes profits for the few while destroying aggregate Demand every way it possibly could. These days we call it the Income Gap. America is supposed to be the market for the world. How great would it be to be able to shop there? Isn't the point of business to make sales? Penny Wise and Pound Stupid.

Money in the pockets of Americans goes to goods and services. These businesses meet this Demand for goods and services by hiring more workers who in turn spend the money they make on yet other goods and services, supporting yet other businesses. Just like Supply-Side economics in Reverse. Round and round in a virtuous cycle GROWING, EXPANDING the Economy.

America hasn't seen anything like that since the end of WWII.

There is a thing here I call the Oklahoma Single Mom Thing. Poor education means poor prospects and often early motherhood. We do ALWAYS imprison the most women in America. We're kind of proud of that. So our system regularly churns out young single mothers w/ no social safety net support. How do you raise these young'uns w/ poor education and no support? You find a man, any man who will help raise your kids...and if you and they are REALLY lucky, they won't be abused, raped or killed. I recommend looking at our state's child death numbers, compared to the national average. As a child in this state, the odds are NEVER in your favor. I've lived that shit, and got the scars and fucking sunny disposition to prove it. And I was LUCKY.

To make women have babies they aren't prepared for is to make the Oklahoma Single Mom Thing a NATIONAL Thing. Like it wasn't already.

Too, women w/ means will continue to get abortions, protected by HIPPA.

This means that the ones who will be forced to carry babies to term will be the ones who can least afford it. As it has ALWAYS been. That describes the White poor and racial minorities. The driving political impetus is the birth rates of White women falling. Part of what had been tried in the past was rewarding Full Quiver large families. They quit that shit when a Muslim family stepped forward. It just wasn't the demographic they were shooting for.

Which itself is a hideous feature of this abomination. In boosting birthrates across the board, they are increasing the numbers of those all important White Babies which they still have no trouble w/ seeing used to demonstrate the fabulous stopping power of the AR-15 in elementary schools across the nation. But they will be pushing larger populations of Minority babies as well. What would they say? "Solve one problem, you create another?" Just wait til they come of age and have cops summarily kill the undesirable "excess" population? As they've been doing since Reagan and before. Shoot pregnant black women, as happens all the fucking time now anyway? Few things more American than social policies that require Ethnic Cleansing. Just good old fashioned American values.Who wants to live in a world where there is even more of THAT? Even if you are White?

The best outcome they are pushing for is future generations of White FELONS. What a golden opportunity. How could we say no? Conceived in rape (suddenly increasingly more likely,) poorly educated, most likely violent and swimming in guns.

I need to immigrate to Scandinavia where shit like this doesn't happen. There's 3rd World shitholes, and then there's us making 3rd World shitholes look great and humanitarian by comparison.

We had better recognize that we are about to become a society that rewards Rapists for doing "God's Work." Rapists are already awarded visitation rights and a say in what happens to the product of their crime. How long a walk til they are given full custody? Don't you fucking say "Never." But remember this boys and girls, just because you get the result you want does not mean that history suddenly stops. Nothing is for nothing. Nothing is ever entirely in vain. If America falls before women regain the right to their own reproductive autonomy, it will still stay foremost in their minds after the authors of America's destruction get eaten by their prize and a dream of a Civil Society rises like a phoenix from the ashes. Large scale property damage, while mitigating injury and loss of life as best they could. Women killed themselves at public venues to shock the conscience. Eh. Contemporary America barely even has that anymore.
But the Republican Party has already adopted Racial Terrorism as their own Operating System. The goal of destroying the Federal Govt to punish it for protecting of Black Americans. States Rights was about education, true enough. But it also meant the States Right to regulate how Black Americans are killed. Why else did Reagan announce his candidacy to the murderers in Philadelphia Mississippi FIRST, promising that he was their man? Who were they? The subjects of the film Mississippi Burning. Reagan was telling them he supported their right to lynch all the black people and civil rights workers they wanted to. Ask Reagan fetishist Obama about that. We've got cops killing unarmed black men women and children. But can anyone say what role Brown v. Board plays in public education TODAY? No. It's been a dead letter since Reagan. We know the world we live in, even as we hate to admit recognizing it.

Whether America falls or not, women still need to recognize that Men have been terrible guardians of Civil and Human Rights. Any reformation of America once Humpty (the Federal Govt) falls had better account for this hoary old unacknowledged truth! So I had to bring the party back to my house. The alternative is running messages through a friend of mine...and you just don't do that to friends.

I'm a big believer in fucking around and finding out. I weigh my chances before walking into an asskicking, but I try not to let it stop me. I'm terrible about not measuring depth or temperature before jumping in. But, if it's miserable enough it becomes Adventure!

I don't mind being wrong because recognizing it is the first step in finding out what is right and/or true.

I should not have to stress DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME!

Not everybody can be a human crash test dummy. The difference between Masochism and Machismo is a single S. Whatever mindset gets you through the beating.

I don't know what my advice would do to someone who is healthy. Never been a parent.

I know my mileage. I'm a fundamentally broken individual who uses a thousand little tricks to keep myself...coherent.

And in middle school, I tested in the top 97%tile nationally. That curve drops to irrelevance beyond high school. I dropped out of high school, loved certifiable women, smoked weed, did psych meds.

She would have asked had she lived and known I've no doubt.

In all other respects I am a staunch ally of LGBTQ community as well as Black Lives Matters and ANTIFA. Majority of this blog was written during the Occupy Movement. What the fuck was that about? Right, we did not have a friend in the White House in Obama. Saying that will get you banned by fellow Liberals on Twitter. Hurt my feelings at first, but that's the price of Heterodoxy. Or holding heretical or minority positions.That Obama wasn't a good Democratic president definitely counts.

DON'T fuck around and find out! Please.

Instead, watch everybody ELSE fucking around and finding out.

I also support emotional self-honesty.

Like my father's suicide, there was no altruism in what I said that got me banned from Twitter. It served no higher purpose. It was so mean it cut and bled. My wife has pointed out that but for the addition of a couple of extra words, I'd still be on Twitter.

This is why I don't want anyone too upset about me getting banned from Twitter. There is no way they could look good defending me. Impression management is the key to getting by in the world and what I said was fucking toxic.

Let me be clear. I want us all to survive. Even when that means me enduring Pariah Stink for something I said. Really, the cost almost feels neglible compared to the death of my dog. Something many of you helped me deal and grieve w/ during that episode in my life. For which I'm very grateful.

BEST PRACTICES: Catastrophic emotional losses and grief help one maintain perspective. Everything else pales a bit by comparison.

In future installments, I will be dredging up the lessons I learned on Twitter and that will mean hearing things I've said ad nauseam (ooh! Italics!) But in this format, I will be able to just say it once. Repetition bugs me. I hope to control it.

Which is hilarious because we are past Great Depression levels of unemployment and economic contraction and everything done outside the home is a game of 2 or 3 week onset of Russian Roulette that threatens the whole household.

It is no less dangerous than war on American soil. And as such, it rhymes with what's on the Vietnam era GI's lighter.

It goes like this:

How much is that risk of death worth? $15 an hour? $20? Insurance? Benefits? Death Benefits?

How much is a reasonable price for a daily obligatory game of Russian Roulette that that risks the entire household?

But Death Cult that they are, Republicans are pushing Social Darwnism even at this absurd date. Calling direct payment support for Americans a waste while immunizing employers against liability for killing their employees.

Hint: If it is more profitable for employees to live on stimulus checks than go out and work (which it's not, it's really not) then it's because workers aren't paid enough to begin with. And absolutely not paid enough to play Russian Roulette with our families lives on the daily!

The Economic and Electoral Effect of DEAD PEOPLE

It is clear that #Trump is making the calculation that you can save lives or you can save the economy. Fullstop. It is necessary to examine the electoral and economic effect of DEAD PEOPLE.

DEAD PEOPLE are really bad for the economy.

They do not buy. They do not sell things. They do not employ, or manage hedgefunds, even if they did all these things when they were alive.

What dead people do is shrink the economy. Reduce the markets for good and services by one each. That is now over 70 thousand person reduction in people buying, selling, paying ...taxes. And that number grows by thousands every day and WILL ONLY GET LARGER. Everyday. Exponential growth in number of DEAD PEOPLE. If you want to run on a big powerful economy, having a growing Black Hole of DEAD PEOPLE devouring the Economy is a bad way to do it.

The Electoral Effect of DEAD PEOPLE. DEAD PEOPLE don't vote. Their direct effect on electoral representation is the dictionary definition of Negligible. Electoral Non-Entities for true!

But to fail to look beyond that is gross malpractice of any political operator. Everyone who is dead was someone's wife husband child sibling aunt uncle niece nephew friend lover customer (see Economic Impact of DEAD PEOPLE.)

The death of anyone impacts profoundly any from one to possibly millions of people in the case of a death of a celebrity.

The death of a loved one or even an acquaintance is the ONE THING most likely to change one's thinking on political matter if their preferred politics lead to their loved one's death.

Grief anger and recriminations are common feelings surrounding death and always rebound to ...those in charge. Under normal conditions.

These are NOT normal conditions.

Everybody who knows anybody who died of Covid19 or even just infected with it has a really excellent chance of becoming infected and dying themselves. Even if they are believers in Trump.

Trumpsters taste just like everyone else to the Corona 19 Virus.

Everyone who has the symptoms, knows and loves some one who has and knew and loved someone who died from it is REALLY unlikely to agree with #Trump that a strong economy (again, see Economic Effect of DEAD) was worth the sacrifice of them or their loved ones.

There is a key fact about the electoral effect of DEAD PEOPLE. The number of dead people grow exponentially under Covid19. The number bereaved and angry at the Trump Administration grows even faster, ever larger. Even if they had been Trump voters themselves.

Learning that ...they and Everyone they love is one the Virus's menu. The number of people disinclined to vote for Trump grows at a far quicker rate than the number of people infected and killed by the Virus.

It's not something that can be gotten around by the proper Messaging.

My discipline is lacking and I really just do better.

Nearly all that I do is tweet.
The compact format forces an economy of words, unless you mind making a thread.
Therefore most of what I will be posting here will be what I've culled from my own posts on Twitter.
Additionally, emails sent to those who I recognize as my betters.

On Twitter, I frequently repeat myself. So for the sake of this blog and any future book I may write, it behoove me to give you something I have little cause to when tweeting.

To Every who ever followed me and those who never had,

I'm back. The last time I was posting, it was in support of the Occupy Movement. It's been a long minute.
I'm back, at a time in history that absolutely defeats imagination. It's like the nation has been strapped into a roller-coaster and the only thing that we can agree on is that the damn thing is broken but no one knows exactly where and some of us are taking bets on where exactly the wheels will leave the rails.

I'm back. Most of my old posts were written during the Occupy Movement. Some of them, while not prescient, do show the history of where some of our issues have sprung. I will up-date and re post them.
It broke my heart that the Occupy Movement never went anywhere.
Today I support the Black Lives Matter, Indivisible, Resist and Democratic Socialist Movements.
The #Metoo Movement is a cultural revolution with all the challenges to the existing order that it implies...compare with the Iranian and Chinese cultural revolution.
In terms of the body politic, it is the inflammation caused by the fact that Trump has never a paid a price for his misogyny and sexual assaults and that these last two qualities appear to be required to be a male member of his cabinet.
The racist and white supremacist nature of this administration is frankly terrifying. My own grandfather was a racist and a bigot himself, but one of the things that I loved about him was that when his time came, he killed Nazis. That makes him an old school member of the Antifa Movement and I support them too.
I won't lie. I could watch Nazis like Richard Spencer being punched in the face all day long. Maybe that is wrong. Maybe that's not productive. But White Supremacists, White Nationalists, Nazis, Fascists, Alt-Right, and members of the KKK must never be given the benefit of the doubt or granted any accommodation or legitimacy. People who march under the flags bearing Swastikas or the Confederate Battle Standards are declaring themselves enemies of the United States, marching with the flags of vanquished enemies. Fine People don't do these things. There's no room for those who are second place in war in the leading of this nation, and this nation is the world in small and the global melting pot.
This is America.

There can be no doubt that Trump is the greatest threat to the nation since the Civil War. But understand that Trump is just the latest symptom of the chronic disease of the body politic known as Reaganomics. In Republicans this amounts to almost intentional corruption and incompetence to prove Reagan's contention that the federal government is the enemy which is incapable of doing anything well or helping anyone.
Clinton acted as if a victim of Stockholm Syndrome to Reaganomics, signing Bush-41's NAFTA agreement, doubled down on the War of Drugs, deregulated anti-trust and financial industries, emphasizing Wall Street speculation over manufacturing and the Labor Movement, he further gutted the safety net with Welfare Reform.
The Democratic Party has adopted Reaganomics as its core ethos, supplanting the New Deal which is the only thing that made America great. Reagan had declared war on the New Deal, which left segregationism as the only policy that Made America Great for Reagan and Trump.
The New Democratic (the party after Clinton) Party's preference for Speculation over Manufacturing continued to destroy the middle class, even as Clinton finished his terms with a budget surplus and Obama finished his with record stock market highs.
The Democratic Party can do America no good until there is a rapprochement with the New Deal.

Lastly, expect to hear me challenge religious white Evangelical supremacy. There is very little that Christ would want to claim ownership of in the people who have so much adoration and support for Donald Trump. They would remind him of the people who agitated for the Romans to publicly execute him on their behalf. Those at the moneychanger's tables Christ had knocked over outside the Temple. The ones who Christ had said that it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for them to enter the kingdom of God.
These people, whatever they call themselves, are the uber-conservative Pharisees and idolaters of Mammon.

Open Letter to the President: Re Resolution of Fiscal Cliff

Dear President Obama
I always credit you with saving this nation's bacon from falling into the abyss of a New Great Depression at the beginning of your first term.
I also really like what you did for marriage equality and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.
And most recently, your initiatives on gun control.

In most other regards, however, you are the third term of the Bush/Cheney White House:

You gave an umbrella to the war criminals of the previous administration; you exchange the policy of torture with drone assassination which are proving as fine tuned and precise as brain surgury with a baseball bat. [On that note, some advice. The people who engineered 9/11 (World Trade Center edition) were our FRIENDS once upon a time. They were the mujahadeen trained and armed by the CIA against Russia. Osama bin Laden and even Sadam Hussein were OUR creatures at one time. How do you see this working out, killing their children and blowing up wedding parties, in 20 years time when they gave us 9/11 and had been our FRIENDS? Just think on that for a second. Not even mentioning what a really bad example flying killer robots provides for rogue nations to follow.]

Letting Wall St criminals not only remain unpunished for applying the strategies pioneered by ENRON to the housing markets and nearly destroying the nation's economy, but mostly letting them write their own rules while the foreclosure crisis chews up millions of families.

Opening up domestic drilling, making such disasters as Deep Water Horizon possible and then not ONLY letting BP usurp cleaning and containment, but local, state and federal law enforcement as well? Tacky, very tacky. Letting BP laugh in your face over their use of Correxit when you ordered them not to. It was like letting al Qaeda clean up and take control of the mess after 9/11.

Giving support to the environmentally disasterous practice of hydraulic frakking by ordering the government fleet of vehicles to operate on natural gas. Destructive to air and water purity, I also have a add-on with a bathroom seperating from the rest of my house because of EARTHQUAKES. IN OKLAHOMA! Hard to not take that personally and a warning to everyone to avoid real estate in this vile third world excuse of a state. This is absolutely no joke!

Continuing and expanding domestic espionage and the prosecution of whistle-blowers. And for shits and giggles I'll also include continued employment of those skeevey murdering, thieving, child prostitute buying criminals Blackwater/Xe/whoever the fuck else they are now and Halliburton...Deep Water Horizon again, GOOD ONE! Have them put in more of those shower installations that electrocute American soldiers to death while you are at it. Way to represent the American brand.

You caved to the very people who want destroy you by gutting the public service sector which artificially increased the unemployment numbers - whereas every other REPUBLICAN president in a recession had done the opposite. You've had a very busy year and I've forgotten little of it.

You are also a very smart man, so let's do some simple math.
Bush/Cheney began their administration with a budget surplus. Their first round of tax cuts turned that surplus into a deficit. Every additional round of tax cuts just dug that hole deeper and deeper. They also had two wars (one justified, the other criminal as selling drugs to pre-schoolers dressed as a nun) which they tried to fund with...wait for it...the stimulative effect of additional tax cuts.
Do you remember how that movie ended?
It was the disaster flick you were the hero of at the start of your first term.

As of the end of the fiscal cliff, the tax cuts you have enshrined into permenance - 99% of the Bush tax cuts - when set against the Clinton surplus, still creates a a substantial and growing deficit.
Republicans and blue dog democrats all argue that the deficit must be ameliorated by by the gutting of domestic spending, principally taken from entitlements and social safety net programs which enforce a bottoms-up form of austerity [ increases in age eligibilty for entitlements is addressed in http://donquixokie.blogspot.com/2012/12/bring-out-your-dead.html] bringing pain to the people at or below the poverty level.
I repeat: "Middle class" tax cuts paid for with Greek-style AUSTERITY for the lower classes. Especially if the sequester goes into effect.

The Bush/Cheney tax cuts were WRONG.
99% of the Bush/Cheney tax cuts are WRONG.

Even if all of the Bush tax cuts had been repealed and every middle class house hold member would have been forced to pay their fair share as much as any tycoon, the revenues raised would have been enough to support the social safety net programs and entitlements.
Money in the pockets of the poor and the retired would have created demand for goods and services which would have kept people employed and grown the economy; while tax revenue from economic activity (buying, selling) and pay checks would have paid down the deficit.
This is the exact opposite of Reagan style supply-side trickle-down economics.
You tell me Mr. President. Which economic and social policy set pulled the America out of the Great Depression, and which has made multi-trillion dollar deficits and economic crashes the New Normal?
As it stands, permenant tax cuts = permenant and growing deficits = permenant and growing austerity for the bottom up and permenant economic contraction.
The slow walk to destruction.
And that's under leadership like yours or Clinton's.

Tax hikes are NOT going to throw the nation back into recession.
The sequester, with its guaranteed contraction of the economy, will be certain to.
Test that.
Cuts to entitlements and the safety net will be like water in the gas tank of the economy.
Remember how the tax cuts to the stimulus slowed down the recovery? Just like that!
In enshrining this much of Bush policy, you are seconding disasterous Reagan economic policy and that of Warren G.Harding who's policies gave us the Great Depression in the first place.
And you - like Bill Clinton before you with his deregulation of trust laws, financial industries, and trade agreements with third world nations - are slow walking the nation to destruction and leaving the driver's door open for a Reagan/Ayn Rand fetishist with a lead foot.
Just like Bill Clinton did. The Wall St Meltdown should have been no worse than the 1987 stock market crash. You do the math.

You have enabled future economic dysfunction just like Clinton did.
Try moving the ball toward the goal of future stability and prosperity instead of toward Conservative dystopia and national dissolution.
The Republicans will get their hands on the the White House and the damage they do will be nigh insurmountable to repair for the next progressive president in the short 4 to 8 years he will be alotted.

You are doing America no favors by ceding to the Republicans on budgetary matter, especially on entitlements.
The whole Grover Norquist philosophy of shrinking the government is crap.
People don't move into into smaller houses as their fortunes improve.
Families don't respond to disaster by moving into their car if their house is still sound, yet this is exactly what Conservatives are calling for when they demand set asides to deal with disaster relief, especially when it comes to areas outside of their districts.
As a sign of recognition of the reality of climate change - move heaven and earth to abolish all subsidies to petroleum/carbon energy companies (mythical "clean coal" and natural gas included,) reserving those corporate welfare checks only to incentivize non-carbon based renewable energy research and developement. The taxes we finally collect from them will help pay for extreme weather events like Katrina and Sandy and maybe even reduce the incidents of earthquakes caused by frakking and slow down climate change if it isn't already too late.

In the face of extreme weather events, we need to give our nation the same breaks we gave Japan and Germany after WW II. We need to take the opportunity to modernize infrastructure and power grids which had been destroyed.
We can't have disasters be the excuse why we are an increasingly impoverished nation with an increasingly impotent government. That's not how being a globally exceptional nation works. You 've got to pay the cost to be the boss. American exceptionalism IS NOT FREE!
And this is not how America rose to pre-eminance after the Great Depression and WW II. America under Reaganomics never grew as strong as America under FDR. Fact!
Under Reaganomic /Ayn Rand Orthodoxy, we are well on our way to become a 3rd World Banana Republic. Mississippi, Texas, Lousiana, and Oklahoma are the future of the nation as it stands.

Amazing too is your assertion that the ONLY thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Maybe you've been seeing spree shootings in some parallel dimension.
Here in this universe it is usually a jammed chamber followed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, if the shooter isn't tackled by would be victims when he's reloading that stops a bad guys.
Obviously, being forced to reload more often would give victims more chances to disarm their attacker, though you deny that point.
Maybe logic works differently in that other universe you and other gun rights activists see so clearly.
Everyone else has to live and be killed in this world.

It was interesting how absolutely agnostic you were regarding the gun show loop-hole. Clearly those don't exist where you hail from either.
Instead the solutions you offer are: more guns; the expansion of the police state with further stigmatization of ex-felons and the mentally ill.

As everyone who has been paying attention should know, the Republicans are pursuing raising the age of entitlement (Social Security, Medicare) and trying to call that entitlement reform.
Brilliant, effective!
A significant chunk of retirees won't won't survive long enough to collect SSI and Medicare, there by shrinking demand for these entitlements.
THERE'S your savings, Nancy Pelosi! THAT'S the money! THAT'S what you were missing!
There is a phrase that describes this type of policy, and it was the Republicans who were in white-knuckled terror and outrage when they accuse President Obama of it.
Now the Republicans in Congress ARE the DEATH PANEL!

I've a suggestion. Everyone reading this who is an American and who is likely to be impacted by this legislation, should it become law, please do this:
If you you die between the age of retirement as it is NOW (12-28-2012) and the new age of entitlement eligibility - have it included in your WILL that you have your body stacked beside the front door of the House of Representatives.
If they couldn't afford to help keep you alive, then the least they can do is spring for your funeral.
Likewise do this if you are the child or caretaker of someone who fits this description who dies as a result of this policy - between the age of retirement now and the new age of entitlement eligibility.
This Republican lead Congress is moving Heaven and Earth to render you or your loved one or charge an expendable liability in the interest of scoring political points and using your or their dead bodies as an obstacle to prevent the wealthiest from having to pay their fair share of the public debt.
In so doing they will be depriving the elderly of their dignity as well as their lives.
Stacking the bodies beside the front door of Congress would be absolute JUSTICE.
They must be forced to see the very real price of their political football, reminding everyone else of the price they pay for the Republicans' protection of the wealthy.

Marijuana Nation

In the 2012 election, two states voted to legalize recreational marijuana. Some things are so damn awesome and wonderful, they merit examination.
What this means now and in the future is nothing short of incredible. It's the only area of the states rights' argument that I agree with.
Though now legal in Colorado and Washington, pot remains illegal under federal law.
Whether the Feds will violate the will of the people or allow all states to write their own marijuana laws is the question we wait to see answered.
However, in those two states at least, enforcement of the drug war on pot is scaling back.
They will test whether or not taxation of pot will indeed be an effective source of state revenue. I can only imagine it will be a better source than state lotteries as you won't need to face odds equivalent to be struck by lightening or eaten by a shark to get some joy.

One thing NOT discussed, yet, is the implications for their respective Depts of Corrections. Those states will no longer be spending future tax dollars on the back-door welfare state of the prison industrial complex holding people on marijuana possession charges. Amnesty for former pot convictions will empty prison beds and re-enfranchise thousands; strengthening those states substantially in a variety of ways.

What promises maximum entertainment potential is if the federal govt follows the precedent posed by the abolishment of Prohibition, returning the drafting of pot laws to each of the states.
When this happens, each state will be responsible for their own law enforcement and correctional policies.

You can be sure that many states will continue the same policies that they have always pursued without the excuse of of Federal law.
I live in a state where Prohibition remained the law of the land until the 1950s. I met an old bootlegger when I was in prison. And I remember "liquor by the drink" being a controversial ballot measure when I was a kid. I'm 41 years old.

There really will be no accounting for the stupidity of state and local legal mores once the federal govt rescinds its mandates, though that won't stop me from trying.
True for alcohol, would be doubly true for abortion if Roe v. Wade ever got reversed and absolutely WILL be true when the national war on weed is ended!
Every state will be given the option of freeing up millions of dollars and redirecting them toward more pressing concerns, freeing up several thousands of prison beds and lightening the load of the back-door welfare state of the prison-industrial complex. Allowing full economic and political participation for those who had been previously marginalized.

Trust that numerous states will decline these opportunities. Among them those which already have the highest rates of incarceration in the nation and which are least able to afford them.
Just in terms of pure pure economic and political pragmatism, there would seem little upside in continuing these failed policies.
What will happen is that a large swath of beard will be stripped from the face of the nation. What weed control policies remain on the state and local level will continue, as they always have, to be proxies for Jim Crow, racial profiling and disenfranchisement, and anti-immigrant animus. Which, not coincidentally, was the first use of marijuana criminalization. Those states that keep pot criminalized will do so precisely because they need the beard for local Jim Crow in their state.

Whatever happens and however you slice it, we are about to learn some telling lessons about ourselves as a nation.
Until then it will be a banner year in households in Colorado and Washington.
Smoke up Johnny! And take a toke for the rest of us poor sods waiting to move into the 21st Century and who will be waiting still in 2050!

There are some things that are just so stupid and ugly that they demand examination.
The escalation of the killing and threat of ground war between the Israelis and and the Palestinians in Gaza are a prime example..

Let me make this clear. I'm not a Muslim. But I really don't think that Christ would be copacetic with the actions of the Israelis either.
What I am is enough of a historian to be absolutely disgusted.
It was the asymmetrical and l-sided nature of the Middle East Conflict that fostered the use of suicide bombs and terrorist attacks in the first place...a suicide car bomb being one of the few things that could be made on the cheap and nasty that could destroy a tank. Asymmetrical and lop-sided.
We can talk all we want about how barbaric and fanatical the Palestinians are. But this is only one side in this conflict armed with tanks, helicopter gunships, and jets.
As of this writing (11-19-12 9PM CT), the body count is about 3 to 100. This number can be counted on to climb and remain as unequal. That tells the story all by itself.

None of this is new. Too much of it is like those pieces of American history of which no American should be proud.
Yeah yeah yeah. Israel and America BFFs forever. Sure.
Let's have a little thought experiment.
Suppose America has been invaded. Occupied. Colonized by people who are far more technologically advanced. Bullet proof. Too much of a stretch of your imagination?

So Hamas is the duly elected party that leads Palestine.
Let's hear the tired line uttered by Reagan about how we don't negotiate with terrorists.
Tell us how you dealt with terrorists, Saint Reagan.
You sold weapons to Iranians who held Americans hostage who were nice enough to return them on the day they were inaugurated.
John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Joe Liebermann all practiced this method of prosecuting terrorists when they went to Libya and advised Khaddafy on how to handle the public relations fallout from the Lochabie bombing.
Back to Israel and Gaza.
By not negotiating with Hamas out of "principle," Netanyahu is insuring that what is happening will continue to happen. He spits in the face of the lessons learned in Ireland.
When terrorist groups become part of the governing process, their teeth are instantly blunted and pulled as they are given the diplomatic means to accomplish their political aims. They must bargain in good faith in order to do so.
Continuing as he has, Netanyahu might as well be providing Hamas with missiles personally because he is giving them every justification as to continue as they have; i.e. forced resettlement, the siege and blockade of Gaza, an absolute unwillingness to bargain in good faith.

Obama had been exactly as ineffectual as Bush/Cheney in regards to the Middle East conflict.
Yes, every nation has the right to defend themselves.
But no nation should be forced to re-settled and colonized by bull-dozers, or live in cities besieged into being open-air prisons. Those are called Concentration Camps.
As long as Obama remains silent on these issues, he and every subsequent president who does likewise is guilty of supporting the same genocidal crimes that stain the history and honor of the United States.

When the Israelis and the Palestinians quit trying to combat the intolerable (from their respective perspectives) in the bloodiest way possible, they will both need to turn to suppressing the feuds and need for revenge among their own peoples.
But as long as the violence serves political purposes it will continue until one side ceases to be a problem.
In the the words of David Bowie:
"This ain't personal,
This is GENOCIDE!"

And one lesson America will be forced to learn is that, sometimes, backing the winner means being remembered as a partner in their crimes.

Hurricane Sandy: Opportunity in Catastrophe; Post Script 3/19/2014

Within the catastrophe of Hurricane Sandy there is a golden opportunity, if we choose to make a virtue out of necessity.
The utter destruction of century old infrastructure means it must be rebuilt...and CAN be rebuilt with state of the art technology and with the eye toward survivng another Sandy.
Sandy has necessitated infrastructure investment far beyond what would have been possible even with a cooperative House and Senate.
History is a marvelous teacher.
It was the reconstruction of the infrastructures of Japan and Germany after WW 2 which modernized them. Natural disasters destroy infrastructure as thoroughly as war.
In the case of the devastation left by Sandy, armies of construction workers and engineers will be at work for years if not decades rebuilding and refitting in New York and New Jersey.
What do you call that?
God's own stimulus plan.
We are also looking a a crash course clinic in getting and delivering aid to populous disaster ravaged areas. The lessons we learn here will be essential in shaping future responses to increasingly common disasters.

We could have done the same with Hurricane Katrina and - indeed - could have been ahead of the curve today if we had.
But the Bush/Cheney Administration had zero interest in acknowledging failure, much less learning what lessons were implicit in them.
Nor are the power elite in New Orleans at all interested in making their great citybeing made habitable for the return of the people who were turned into refugees during the flood. They are satisfied with New Orleans continuing to remain half destroyed and depopulated.
There is simply no remedy for the hard-heartedness of the rich and the powerful.
We saw this again in Joplin Mo. when it was struck by a tornado and Eric Cantor played games with disaster relief funding.

What we DON'T need are budget cuts to FEMA, NOAA or gutting the numbers of First Responders (as stupid now as when half the nation burning down - good one Romney!) or public employees.

Affordable Care Act and a New Opportunity

The passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare has created or uncovered a huge shortage of primary care physicians. Ominous, yes?
There is a vast opportunity hidden in this crisis.
Conservatives have made much about doctors claiming that they'd rather give up their practice than operate under Obamacare.
If the burdens of Obamacare is so onerous to physicians, then that can be remedied with subsidies made directly to doctors who participate rather than insurance middle men.
That's for the short term.
The fact is that the Federal government has an unmatched ability to promote specific industries and make fertile specific fields of endeavor, witness the World War 2 and post-World War deficit promotion of manufacturing which created the greatest economic expansion the world had ever known.
For the long term, America needs an investment on the scale of the GI Bill for education for future primary care physicians.
The GI Bill, no less that the government's investment in manufacturing and infrastructure, contributed to the explosion of the post WW2 middle class.
A massive increase in the number of doctors is an increase in the number of members of the upper-middle class. An increase in the number of well paid individuals creates demand for goods and services, creating a demand which can only be filled by people being hired to provide those good and services.
Far more so than any tax cut to "job creators."
This by itself will will create the tax revenue (from pay roll taxes collected and from taxes on goods and services) which will pay the Federal investment for educational incentives for new physicians.

It would effectively be an unintended social consequence that would benefit the nation, rewarding it for moving in a more progressive nation. Just as it did in response to the Great Depression and the end of World War 2.
This is not a burden on the American tax payers.
This is an investment in the future that will actually the nature to survive the future into an era of economic prosperity not since before the Reagan presidency.

Please Mr. President. DO THIS!

Green on Blue Attacks in Afghanistan

The Limits of the 1st Amendment OR Why Lizards Don't Belong in the Oval Office

Likewise the 1st Amendment protects freedom of speech and religion.

Incitement
The Supreme Court has held that "advocacy of the use of force" is unprotected when it is "directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action" and is "likely to incite or produce such action".^[1]^[2] In Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the Court struck down a criminal conviction of a Ku Klux Klan group for "advocating ... violence ... as a means of accomplishing political reform" because their statements at a rally did not express an immediate, or imminent intent to do violence.^[3] This rule amended a previous decision of the Court, in Schenck v. United States (1919), which simply decided that a "clear and present danger" could justify a congressional rule limiting speech. The primary distinction is that the latter test does not criminalize "mere advocacy".^[4]

In response to the attacks against the consulates and embassies in Egypt and Libya, before the attacks attacks were even over and the final body count made known, Romney issued a statement blaming the Obama Administration for a statement issued by the Egyptian embassy...before the attacks even took place...which he criticized as being "apologetic." Thus emboldening the attackers to storm the embassies and which led to the the death of Chris Stevens in Benghazi, Libya and three other Americans.

Romney delivered this with the signature smirk heretofore reserved for answering accusations of personal cruelty.
What he said, by way of contrast with Obama, was that America must never apologize for its values and free speech, and that it was Obama's conciliatory tone which jeopardized the diplomatic mission of the US in the Middle East. He said explicitly that Obama sympathized with the attackers who killed the Ambassador to Libya. He stopped just short of declaring the attacks acts of war.

Initially most Conservatives, especially seasoned politicians who had measured their responses pending full revelation of the facts, greeted Romney's pronouncements with appalled shock.

Fox News talking heads, however, have said that Muslims only respect "strength." Meaning the willingness and ability to kill large numbers of people at any time, at any place and for any reason.

The truth is that the situation in the Middle East, especially in the wake of the Arab Spring is hell and gone from simple.
Despite all the rhetoric about how wonderful it is that autocratic rule is being replaced with fledgling democracy, the conservatives have always distrusted democratic rule by the people, preferring strongmen and autocrats...especially those with theocratic Sharia inflections...over democratic nations as a counter to Soviet hegemony. This makes the Conservative arguments regarding the threat of Islam not just grossly hypocritical, but ahistorical as well. Nowhere more true than in the the training arming and support provided to the mujaheddin in Afghanistan who later became the Taliban, of whom Osama bin Laden was a member.
I don't need to be told..."The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
To which I reply, The enemy of your enemy is flying jet liners into the World Trade Towers about twenty years later. Good one.
This is why we had always given Islamic extremist Pakistan preference over democratically representative India. That fanaticism was something that we took comfort in when it came to the Soviets. That the Indians might be inclined to act more pragmatically with our erstwhile foe was something with which we were uncomfortable.
Likewise the CIA had dealings with Saddam Hussein, Halliburton as well. Right up until the Iraq War.
Mitt Romney has suggested that we need to follow the policy trail blazed by Ronald Reagan in regard to Iran. To which one can only respond, "How many American hostages are we going to give them, and how much will we charge for the weapons we sell them?"

The reason that we have preferred strongmen and autocrats is because, as allies, they are easier to bend to our best interests - and they control their own populace with ruthless efficiency.
It was for this reason that the democratically elected leader of Iran was deposed by the CIA who replaced him with the Shah who was in turn deposed during the Cultural Revolution which saw the installation of Ayatollah Khomeini. Not that Reagan had any trouble playing ball with them, American hostages notwithstanding.

To embrace the spread of democratization in the Middle East means foregoing the advantages of having reliable allies in the region and having less direct involvement in the nations in question. Leaving countries free to elect their own leaders means that our cases must be made to people, to the street. And that these nations may well pursue interests contrary to that of ours. For this reason, supporting the Arab Spring to the degree that he has is an act of profound political courage and faith for President Obama.

The people who are menacing our embassies and consulates are Islamic extremists and not necessarily tied to the government or any political action. The clearest example is that of the attack in Benghazi, Libya which killed Ambassador Steven and four other Americans; which, ironically, might not have anything to do with protests over the the Innocence of Mulsims...though the al Qaeda affiliated/adjacent group may have used the protests for initial cover.

No, the situation is far from simple.

The Republicans and Conservatives who are lining up behind Romney are all making alot of bad noise about the need to demonstrate "strength" in response to the embassy and consulate protests and attacks.
Just what would that look like?
Killing an ass-load of Muslim protesters and extremists?
Declaring Acts of War against countries whose leaders want no beef with us?
What can we expect from this selfsame leader when we start killing his civilians?
How many Iraqs and Afghanistans can we afford to embroil ourselves in?
A dozen? Two dozen? More? The whole Middle East + plus a chunk of Africa and half of Asia?

Romney paints the picture that everything we are risking must be done in the name of defending American values and freedom of speech.
The protesters abroad are outraged because they believe that The Innocence of Muslims was made on the behalf of the American government.
Romney's supporters have said that had Romney been in the White House, there would be no protests.
But had Romney been in the White House, he would have given the Innocence of Islam his personal seal of approval.
That there would have been no protest is a lie.
Only an absolute Reptile fixated on bloodshed and posturing would regard Middle East foreign policy a simple manner of "showing strength."

All of which completely sails over the true threat to American national security, military, and our diplomatic mission.
What is this threat?
Thought experiment:
Imagine a pro-al Qaeda cheer leading corps backed by a Osama bin Laden tribute band touring America. Just how would that play out? Contrary to all the brave noise put out about the American value of free speech, this group would be investigated from collective anus to the inside of their scalp and nails for foreign terrorist affiliations.
And far from raising support for Muslim extremists within the US, they would generate a steady flow military volunteers to fight abroad the against the cause that they are advocating. More telling, it is no stretch of the imagination to see that Muslim Americans and mosques would be receiving about the same treatment as our embassies and consulates are in Africa and the Middle East because of the film Innocence of Muslims.
The threat that the al Qaeda cheer leading squad and bin Laden tribute band would generate in America would not be from Muslim extremists, but from ass-holes similar to the one who perpetrated the Sikh Temple shooting in Wisconsin.
The threat of such a group abroad to our military and diplomatic mission would be negligible, compared to Koran burning ass-hole minister Terry Jones, who's stunt resulted in the killing of 9 people - fortunately none of whom were American.
Just how much of a following would this group have to have to incite an international incident resulting in the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's motorcade being pelted with tomatoes to the chant of "MONICA! MONICA! MONICA!"?
Obviously larger than the following received by Glenn Beck, Michele Bachmann, Jerry Boykin, and Frank Gaffney who sparked all of this with allegations that the Obama State Department had been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood.
And no way could the al Qaeda Glee Club and bin Laden Tribute band have sparked the protests that engulfed the embassies and and consulates through-out the Muslim world that this stupid piece of crap anti-Islamic agit-prop Innocence of Muslims have sparked and provided cover for a terrorist attack that killed the ambassador to Libya!
Contrary to the cheer leading provided by Romney, there is no greater threat to American military and diplomatic mission than that perpetrated under the aegis of 1st Amendment Free Speech.
Instead of fixating in the R (for "Reptile") Complex preoccupations of posturing and bloodshed, what about simply NOT shoving our thumb in the eye of every Muslim in the world?

There are limits to to Freedom of Speech just like there are to the Right to bear arms. If you walk down the street firing your weapon, randomly or not, there are consequences.
You can burn all the Korans you want, make all the anti-Islamic agit-prop you want, spin all the stupid conspiracy theories you want.
But if it causes a single international incident, a single tomato thrown at the motorcade of the Secretary of State, a single protest at an American embassy or consulate, there needs to be consequences.
Absolutely NO-ONE should be able to to imperil American troops or out diplomatic mission or our influence abroad and allowed to walk free without paying a price for it!
If the exercise of free speech causes or is involved in the loss of life - American or not - or the attack on a single consulate or embassy, or the destabilization of entire regions diplomatically; then they must share the same consequences one would deliver upon the head of an accomplice to a terrorist attack or supporter of a terrorist organization...regardless of what "SIDE" the speakers are actually on.
Why?
Because whether they are sincere in their anti-Islamic propaganda that they put out or are "false flag" Muslim extremist provocateurs, THE SUM EFFECT IS INDISTINGUISHABLE! And therefore must be punished identically!

Let me break the 4th Wall for a moment.
Have you ever played Othello or Reversi? Risk?
Have you seen how a bad move on your part as much as a good move by your opponent can undo the result of long work and planning? Going from overwhelming dominance to losing or lost in a single turn?
That is exactly what vociferous unchecked anti-Islamic speech does to the diplomatic mission and American influence in he Middle East and elsewhere in the world.

It is not helped by the fact that many politicians and political wannabes ( I'm looking at You Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and all of your fellow travellers and enablers!) push the East vs. West Clash of Civilizations narrative.
Worse given that these selfsame politicians push social policies that would make any Ayatollah smile, especially in regards to a woman's reproductive rights and the right to gay marriage.
Using the argument that churches are people (a religious application of the of the ideology enshrined in Citizen's United) Obama is being attacked on the grounds that the provisions for birth control violates Freedom of Religion, also insured by the First Amendment - as opposed to burning down churches and imprisoning congregation members.
I don't know about Islam or or Judaism; but I'm pretty sure that I never read in the Bible that the sacrifice of a woman's reproductive choices or a gay man or lesbian's right to marry was ever called a Christian sacrament.
Or that it is good for the underclasses to suffer. Or that the rich and powerful must be rewarded.
Quite the opposite in fact.
Yet the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum has the pustulent gall and hypocrisy to claim to defend religious freedom. Providing that the religion in question is Dominionist Christian Theocracy. Muslims need not ever bother to apply.
Christian Dominionism is no more attractive, desirable or even that DISTINGUISHABLE from Sharia Law...once you get passed the argument of whether Christ or Allah.
Fortunately like the right to bear arms, and as free speech should be, freedom of religion is limited by the Non-Establishment Clause which separates church from state.

In summary:
Contrary to Romney's position that America should never apologize for exercise of free speech, the ass-holes who made the Innocence of Muslims need to prosecuted as would be members of al Qaeda or the Taliban.
If we were to follow Romney's prescription for foreign policy, we would find ourselves mired in maybe two dozen for more Iraqs and Afghanistans.
That would be so stupid that only someone with the mental capacity of a lizard would call it a good idea.
What is frightening is the number of individuals lining behind Romney on this issue on the news and on talk radio.
Scary monsters. Very scary monsters.

Open Letter to Romney and Ryan: Good Questions

Herein are a number of questions which weigh heavily on my mind and which, should you win the election will become important to you as well rest of America. Please answer these honestly.

If deregulation and tax cuts are enough to grow the economy, why didn't it work any better for Bush? How will it work any better for you?

If job creators can fatten their bottom lines off-shoring factories to third world nations, how will you stop them? If you aren't willing to punish job creators who off-shore, how are you going to raise employment by the numbers you predict here at home?

You claim that you will act in the very best interests of the middle class and told the NAACP that you will be the very best candidate for them. But the policies you (Romney) and Ryan outline all look like the same European-style Austerity which has failed to produce results in Europe.
Why should it work any better for us? If the jobs you predict fail to appear, how is the result any different for the poor the working and middle classes any different than the conditions faced during the Great Depression?
Why should the poor, the working and middle classes tolerate this?
What will you do when 98% of the American public feel themselves to have been Taxed Enough Already with very little to show for it?

If Social Security is privatized into Wall St investments, how will you prevent another Wall St meltdown like we saw under Bush in '08?

If you cut the lifelines of the poor, how will you prevent the Drug Wars we saw in the inner cities during the '80s? Double down on the War on Drugs? How will you pay for the expansion of the Prison Industrial Complex? And what is that but a backdoor form of welfare?
Will you infringe on the 2nd Amendment rights of Arizona gun dealers to sell arms to Mexican Drug Gangs?
If not, how will you crack down on that trade?
How will you end or prevent mass shootings performed with legally purchased automatic and semi-automatic weapons?
Will you monitor and profile white supremacist/anti-federalist domestic terrorist hate groups?

You claim that Obama seeks to destroy Medicare with all the cuts he has made to it. You say that you want to preserve it. Does this mean that you will restore to it what Obama has cut from it?
If Obamacare is so toxic that it must be killed, then isn't Romneycare equally onerous and bad for Massachusetts for the very same reasons? Will you outlaw Romneycare in Massachusetts if elected?

If the rights of the fetus from conception trump those of the mother, then isn't the uterus government property and therefore so is the woman who houses it?
How is this any different than Obama's insertion of the government between the patient and her doctor?

You have claimed Personhood Rights for Corporations and Fetuses.
Do the poor, the working, and the middle classes have any Personhood Rights that you are bound to recognize?
What rights are those, explicitly?
What recourse do the poor, the working and middle classes have when you violate their personhood rights?

The unfunded wars in Afghanistan and Iraq contributed greatly to the weakening of our economy. You have made it clear that you intend to engage in military and defense expansion. How are you going to pay for your wars? How much care are you going to give to the wounded and injured that the wars will produce? Our military is already over-extended, where are you going to get the extra troops?

On moral and religious grounds, how do you square your policies with Matthew 25:31-46. (I'm looking at you Paul Ryan.)

For that matter, how can you emulate the policies that created multi-trillion dollar deficits, drug wars within five years, a police state, a crashed stock market (in 1987) which necessitated the Saving and Loan bailouts of the early 90s because of Junk Bonds...and expect anything good to happen?
Bush and Cheney were true followers of Reagan. Do you think you will do better? Why?

Race Relations and the American Police State

This post is apropos observations made by Michael Eric Dyson and TJ Holmes on the Ed Show.
The genesis of said observations was TJ's traffic stop for Driving while Black.
Of course race relations have gotten uglier since Obama took office. The only way they wouldn't have is if he was stamped with the seal of approval from the far right. As, say, a marionette for the Koch bros who had famously observed that water from black water fountains tasted the same as water from white water fountains - Herman Cain; or a former torturer who specialized in mock executions and token black member of a white supremacist biker gang who equates social security with slavery (I guess because the only people who are free are those who are starving to death) and accuses sitting representatives of being Communists - Allen West; or a Supreme Court Justice who has proven the old adage that there is no whore like a whore who is once bought, stays bought. In this instance by the Monsanto corporation and the tea party group his wife heads - Clarence Thomas.
Had any of these individuals, by way of ferinstance, had won the presidency...they'd be called the greatest thing since Reagan and sliced bread; because their is nothing more precious than a traitor. Witness Phyllis Schafly and what she did to the Equal Rights Movement.
But if any of those bastards were to take office, despite all the big love they would get from conservatives everywhere, woe to every minority member not fortunate enough to have a wealthy or power white patron.
This president would climb to power striding on their corpses.

As it is, Obama is to the right of Dwight Eisenhower yet characterized as a crypto-muslim, crypto-foreigner, and as a radical socialist by the likes of Newt Gingrich...proving that despite all of his vaunted erudition and intellectual achievement...Gingrich doesn't have a clue what a Socialist actually is.

I won't mince words. Obama is a disappointment. He takes nearly all of his policy cues from Clinton and Bush/Cheney. He is a more that willing captive of the conservative orthodoxy that there was no history before Reagan. As was Clinton. Hence he does nothing to drag the Overton Window back to the Left. The fact is that I HAVE been paying attention since 1980 and their is alot I'm cognizant of that it is heretical to acknowledge. At least among conservatives.

After the the Civil War, there was an exodus from the agrarian South to the industrial North, this was accelerated by the Mississippi Flood of 1927.
The relative prosperity blacks had found had even lead to the birth of a literary tradition: The Harlem Renaissance. Unionization and support for unions by the federal government improved the lot now urban blacks.
In 1976, Reagan ran on the platform of War on the Welfare Queens. He lost
In 1980 he won and set about, among other things, gutting public assistance. And busting public unions. And sending manufacturing overseas. And closing factories here at home.
Within five years the inner-cities boiled with drug wars and the crack epidemic spread everywhere. Just like the AIDS epidemic which first ravaged the gay community and then everyone else.
To stamp down the violence, a racist police state was instituted. It was called the War on Drugs. It effectively rolled back the Civil Rights Act enacted by LBJ.

Most egregious is the history and law enforcement response to Occupy Oakland. Where the Occupy Movement in New York is an ideological siege against the Temple of Mammon to which the entire nation's economy was almost sacrificed, and the Occupy Seattle had veterans in protests against globalization; Oakland most invokes the warnings found in the Civil Disturbance Maneuver Army Field Manual:

Inciting a crowd to violence or a greater

intensity of violence through the use of brutish enforcement tactics should be

avoided. Publicity can be detrimental to authorities and beneficial to crowds

because it can further their causes....

Community unrest results in urban conflicts that arise from highly

emotional social and economic issues. Economically deprived inner city

residents may feel that they are treated unjustly or ignored by people in power

and authority. Tensions can build quickly in a community over a variety of

issues, such as hunger, poor employment opportunities, inadequate

community services, poor housing, and labor issues. Tension in these areas

creates the potential for violence. When tensions are high, it takes a small

(seemingly minor) incident, rumor, or act of injustice to ignite groups within a

crowd to riot and act violently. This is particularly true if community relations

with authorities are part of the problem.

As demonstrated by the L.A. riots in response to the officers being found not guilty in the beating of Rodney King.

1-5. Significant ethnic differences in a community can create an atmosphere

of distrust, even hatred. Unrest among ethnic groups competing for jobs,

living areas, and sparse essentials can cause an eruption of civil disorder and/

or riots. As emotions run high, violence becomes likely.

It is worth noting that the police do not follow the protocol detailed in Army Field Manual, and as a result the consequences are crystal clear.

Rather than the malfeasance of Wall Street, or WTO protests of Seattle, the history of police antagonism goes back to the Reagan Administration and before. Decades and generations before.The first nail was the union busting going on at the time and the acceleration of off-shore manufacturing, which closed factories here in America. As jobs left, many families were forced onto public assistance. Reagan had already run on a platform of warring against Welfare Queens in '76 in his first bid for the presidency. With his election in 1980, he was able to put his platform into actual practice and shredded the social safety net. This created the contemporary picture of the inner-city. Chronic social decay and suffering worse than that seen during the Great Depression surrounding the derelict corpses of factories and warehouses.

Let's read this one more time:

Community unrest results in urban conflicts that arise from highly

emotional social and economic issues. Economically deprived inner city

residents may feel that they are treated unjustly or ignored by people in power

and authority. Tensions can build quickly in a community over a variety of

issues, such as hunger, poor employment opportunities, inadequate

community services, poor housing, and labor issues. Tension in these areas

creates the potential for violence. When tensions are high, it takes a small

(seemingly minor) incident, rumor, or act of injustice to ignite groups within a

crowd to riot and act violently. This is particularly true if community relations

with authorities are part of the problem.

It could well have been written describing this picture. Bad enough.
However, people are not content or inclined to quietly starve to death. There could be a parallel found in the mass extinction of the dinosaurs:

The earth was struck by an asteroid that caused, among other multitudinous disruptions, a quasi nuclear winter which killed off all the growing plants at the time. Plants form the basis of the food chain. When the plants died out, the herbivores - plant eaters - followed. When the herbivores died out, the carnivores followed.
-Without factory jobs or even public assistance, all businesses died because nobody had money for goods or services. A situation being replicated in many ways today by the Great Recession.

But not all life on earth is dependent on plants or meat. Insects survive on any form of organic matter and survive in nearly every environment. Animals that thrive on insects, though marginal, are very durable. Cockroach vitality, hardy as a rat. Insects became the new base for the food chain. And those creatures that survived as insectivores were later able to diversify and fill the roles of mega fauna herbivores and carnivores left vacant by the destruction of the dinosaurs.
-When legitimate commerce died in the inner city, the economies of last resort...criminal enterprises; drug dealing, prostitution, other peoples' property, and violence...stepped in to take its place out of necessity. People don't quietly starve.

Unfortunately, right at this time, a new product appeared.
A product that could make people wealthy, but at the cost of living their lives in dog years and almost guaranteeing either a violent death, or spending the rest of their lives in prison and the weight of knowing they were poisoning their own communities. Who wouldn't jump at that when the alternative is grinding poverty and degradation? You don't even need a high school diploma!

What product was this? It was crack cocaine.

The Reagan ad Morning in America would have been accurate only if it included the screams of crack babies and the sound of machine gun fire from the drive-bys of competing gangs.

Everything here, from the exportation of jobs to the shredding of the social safety net to the appearance of the crack cocaine economy and the gang warfare it fostered were all the products of classic Reagan era. These were the triumphs of Reagan economic and social policy.

Later triumphs included multi-trillion dollar federal deficits, a crashed stock market in 1987, and saving and loan bailouts fueled by "junk bonds." Truly a precursor to the wonders of the Bush/Cheney White House.
That Reagan was the cause of the social decay in the inner city is, as demonstrated, a straight line computation. There are allegations that his Administration may have also had a more direct hand in the the appearance of Crack as a way to help fund his adventures in Central America, in ADDITION to selling weapons to the very same Iranians who had held Americans hostage and released on the same day he was inaugurated. Gates earned notoriety for his controversial rhetoric on many occasions. Some of the most notable examples of this were:

His testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that infrequent or casual drug users "ought to be taken out and shot" because "we're in a war" and even casual drug use is "treason."^[14] He later said the testimony was calculated hyperbole.^[15]
His dismissive response to concerns about excessive force by police employing "choke holds." Gates attributed several deaths of people held in choke holds to the theory that "blacks might be more likely to die from choke holds because their arteries do not open as fast as they do on 'normal people.'"^[16] (In his autobiography, Gates explained that he had been misquoted, saying that black people were more predisposed to vascular conditions and therefore less likely to have normally-functioning arteries.)

The tactics used against Occupy Oakland demonstrate beyond the shadow of a doubt that Gates' statement were not hyperbole. The use of teargas, flash grenades and rubber bullets are the tools of law enforcement at war with those it is sworn to protect and are things that would have made more sense on the streets of Apartheid South Africa, or Israel. Add some police dogs and fire hoses and it could have been the Civil Rights movement in Jim Crow South.
To be black or brown in America, thanks to the continued War on Drugs, is to live in a police state. Ask any black or brown man or woman who has been the subject of a sidewalk shakedown, or who has been pulled over for driving while black or brown. If as many whites were randomly stopped and given similar treatment, roughly the same proportion would be caught with things they'd rather not. Jails and prisons would be filled with representation of races far more in keeping with what you actually see on the street.

A post-script. (T)he prosaic upward mobility of a factory job leading to security upon retirement with money to send the kids to college died with a stake in its heart, and not just for those in the inner city. It is THIS coincidentally, that has lead to the death of the Middle Class for ALL America....

How pervasive is this police state? Let's answer that question by examining what real racial equality would look like.
Blacks comprise about 13% of the population. True social and economic enfranchisement and participation would have black at about 13% of all millionaires, billionaires, college graduates and professionals.
Whites would be the proportionate majority in all prisons. Blacks would not be more than they are represented in their locales.
But this is all so far removed from the reality on the ground as to be a sick joke.

Zimmerman's cheerleaders should not pretend that you give a rat's about the horror of black on black crime. The NRA is wrong. It is politicians who make firearms more plentiful than opportunities in depressed neighborhoods that kill people. It solves a multitude of problems...it shrinks the population of the black, the poor and the dispossessed through sheer attrition of casualties, the survivors who pulled the triggers are culled from their natural environment where they are kept out of harm's way in one of many fine penitentiaries where they are stripped of any future politically representative voice, even if they DO walk as free men and women once more. High body counts and rates of incarceration means less weight of the public dime in public assistance and education. Blacks with guns scare whites and the middle class, upping support for tough on crime legislation which is always a winner for both Conservatives and the gun lobby in particular.Black on black crime is not a social ailment. It is a SOLUTION. Why should the pro-gun lobby and their pet politicians interfere with a policy that has worked so well for them?

And a young black mother firing a warning shot against her abusive husband gets over 20 years. Latino Americans get asked Papers Please, as is every nearly every Democrat who goes to vote.

With the browning of America, more and more people are being disenfranchised while more and more money and power are being funneled into fewer and whiter hands.
The stop and frisk in New York wasn't about getting guns off the street (in violation of the 4th Amendment Unreasonable Search and Seizure Laws. It was about keeping blacks in their place. Legalizing marijuana would result in fewer...maybe even many fewer arrests and criminal records for young blacks. Shaking down whites for weed and guns would fill holding cells beyond capacity. But as everyone knows...it's not about that at all.
More policing, disenfranchisement, and fewer social supports, voter suppression and union busting and possible Michigan style small bore Fascism across the country in Fiscal Martial Law and continued militarization of police forces for larger and larger minority populations (the minority/majority issue) spells something very like Jim Crow. Or South African Apartheid.

Of course no-one wants to speak out against a police state that they perceive in working in their favor.
So what is the one thing that we can feel good about as a nation? That this can be discussed openly with no fear of reprisal. Yet.
In some times and in some places, this kind of talk would have been considered inflammatory sedition. We need to take advantage of the fact that its not and not allow ourselves to be rebuffed with accusations of playing the race card. You would have heard the same accusations in the Jim Crow South and Apartheid South Africa.
It's not impossible and not insolvable.

Do you REALLY want to get real about black on black crime? Black on black crime is social dysfunction caused by the same policies that Reagan instituted back in the '80s. Bust up the unions, ship out the jobs, replace former union workers with scabs from Mexico in those jobs that can't be exported, gut public assistance to the now swelling ranks of unemployed, and gut public education because the only people who go public schools are those who are going to prison anyway so it's a waste of the tax payer's money [in truth four or five white kids attend public schools for every black child...but let's not confuse the issue with FACTS!]
By the '80s a nice little Crack Epidemic sprouted up like a malignant poisonous mushroom, and why not? No jobs no future no security. But you don't need to have an education to make money. All you need is a supplier and a gun. Don't even need a GED. Besides you're are as likely to be killed by other fools making money or by the cops just by stepping foot out your door, so WHY NOT?

And it doesn't have to be this way. Crack is yesterdays news. The underlying causes are still intact however. Widespread unemployment, anemic public education, a skewed if not broken justice system, a gutted public assistance program.

Now we have houses cars and apartment buildings exploding from numbnuts making meth, which is really hardly a strictly black problem, face it. Why else is anyone not hollering for mandatory minimum sentences for meth cooks and dealers and users? Similar to gun violence, the crime isn't that people USE meth, or crack. The problem is that they honestly view making or selling meth as a viable alternative to ALL the other choices they have to choose from to make their way in the world. Just like crack back in the day. It speaks to a wealth of really crappy options. It, along with all the other crimes that involve money goods or property, are the economies of last resort.

You want to DO something about black on black crime? Shut up, pay your taxes, bring back manufacturing from overseas even if it means trade wars to do it, allow tax cuts to job creators ONLY IF all of their factories and customer service is right here in America, roll back Right to Work and other union busting laws, make sure that schools are well funded, and tell the NRA to back off. All of that all by itself will take weight of of the public dime in public assistance and provide more opportunities than those found in drug dealing, prostitution, theft and the moving of stolen merchandise - all of which will lighten the weight on the tax payers for the back-door institutional welfare of incarceration. Further, more legitimate employment means they become tax-payers as well.

It is NOT that blacks are morally inferior. It is that the social economic and justice systems are broken.

Obama has said that present laws are sufficient for gun control. Ergo no assault weapons ban. That's the president's position and he needs to be called out on it. Everything that Holmes did was legal til he pulled the pin on the grenade.

More to the point. Everything Holmes did prior to pulling the pin on the grenade REMAINS LEGAL. Nearly all of the wielders of of political power want to keep everything HOLMES did up to that point legal. If Obama goes along with that, he is indeed a political coward. Moral hazard. Civilians should not have access to military hardware like assault weapons, grenades and extended magazines. They can't be trusted with them. Mass murder should be more challenging.

I can almost guarantee you that nothing will change. You would think that the near assassination of a congress-woman and a couple dozen innocent by-standers would have been enough of a breaking point. What makes this unique is that he obtained everything LEGALLY. And the powers that be want to preserve the right to do everything James Holmes did, right up to pulling the pin on the grenade.
Think about the Fast and Furious flap. Holder was investigating Arizona gun dealers selling to Mexican drug gangs. Issa punished him for it in the name of defending 2nd Amendment rights. Specifically the right for Az gun dealers to sell to Mexican drug gangs. If you doubt that framing, answer this question...what has Darrel Issa done to curtail the weapons traffic from Arizona gun deal to Mexican drug gangs?

Nearly all politicians on the right and a few on the left will throw down their bodies to protect the right of Americans to access and stockpile the weapons and ammo that made the theater shooting possible.

Moral hazard is used to justify making people drug test to access public assistance (in violation of 4th Amendment unreasonable search and seizure) and to gut all forms of public assistance as "slavery" and injurious to moral fiber...when in fact it won't ever lift them out of poverty - but what it does do is help keep them alive. But when it comes to gun regs, Wall St regs that would have prevented or ameliorated the Meltdown, or regs to prevent mine explosions, streets blowing up from gas leaks, oil spills that destroy entire ecologies...

Well Let's Not Be Too Hasty! Because Moral Hazard and Accountability are for little people. Poor people on welfare who don't have guns.

Moral Hazard is NOT for people who are capable of killing up to a hundred people in under two minutes without having to reload, people capable of destroying the economy, poisoning entire coasts.
Moral Hazard is reserved almost solely for people who are in real danger of starving.
