Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. could have his Lamont Peterson moment and give a less-than-peak Donaire a fight beyond what he was counting on. But in today’s watered-down era of “world titles,” WVII essentially ranks no more than a bottom-half top-ten contender, despite being a former titleholder. Donaire, meanwhile is a special type of talent who is one of the best fighters in the world at any weight.

Donaire figures to be challenged as he continues his rise in weight, but not here. Look for Donaire to be on-point, respectful of his opponent’s size and strength. After a short feeling-out process, Donaire will begin zeroing in with the power shots and Vazquez will soon be out of his element. Look for some well-placed hooks to get the ball rolling downhill for Donaire, who will waste no time in closing escrow.

Asked about how he's handling going up to 122 in camp thus far, Donaire welcomed the fact that he can eat more these days, but also admitted that he might have to stay at the weight for a little while as he intends to build up muscle weight and properly move up.

"I'm a taller guy for the lower weight class, but physically I'm lighter, because I'm skinny. So we're just trying to build up a lot of muscle right now. I think I'll be at 122 for a little bit. I'm struggling in creating more muscles and I'm working on that. To feel at home at 122 and 126, that's something I need to work on as time goes by. Right now I'm looking at 122 as the most I'm going up until I can say that I can take care of these guys and then go up to 126," Donaire said.

Staying at 122 to further establish his star isn't a bad idea either with potential explosive match-ups against the likes of WBC champ Toshiaki Nishioka, newly crowned WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux and other names like Jorge Arce and Abner Mares who can easily move up to 122.

At the moment, however, Donaire is focused on the task as hand which is to win the WBO strap against its former owner Wilfedo Vazquez, Jr. at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 4.

"I'm the type to look at what's in front of me. 122 is where I'm going to stand right now and see how I'm going to do with the stars at 122. If I can dominate like I dominated at 118, of course I want to challenge myself and move up to 126," Donaire emphasized and added, "but like I said, I am fighting Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. who is a tough oppoenent, and that's my only focus right now."

On Saturday night, Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux perched himself onto the championship ranks with a convincing 6th round knockout over former champion Rico Ramos inside of the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fighting on Showtime’s airwaves, Rigondeaux was patient throughout the contest, registering a knockdown in the first and yet again five rounds later as he landed a barrage of punches that left his Pico Rivera, California counterpart helpless and lying on his back until referee Joe Cortez counted him out.

Calling the action from ringside, WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward couldn’t help but give Rigondeaux his due respect.

“I thought Rigondeaux, he did what he had to do,” Ward told me shortly after the fight. “He saw that Rico was tight and he didn’t want to open up and basically he came in here like he was the champion. I know he was the interim champ, but he came in here like he owned the belt and it showed.”

But that’s when the slight praise from Ward stopped, as he was then asked about a possible fight with bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, who is moving up in weight for his February 4th assignment against former title holder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on February 4th on HBO.

Having known Donaire very well over the years after crossing paths in the Bay Area of Northern California, Ward admits he might have a touch of bias, but speaks with conviction on just how different of a fight Nonito would bring.

“Well, Nonito is clearly a friend of mine but he’s a beast,” stated Ward. “When the lights are bright he shows up and I don’t think that will happen. If Nonito Donaire fights Rigondeaux, he’s going to bring it. He’s fast, he’s powerful, he does a lot of different stuff. It’s going to be a different night if Rigondeaux fights Nonito.”

Ward is still basking a bit in the limelight that came from his recent Super Six finale victory over Carl Froch last month. Ward pounded out a unanimous decision over the bombastic Brit in Atlantic City on December 17th and further bolstered his status as one of the most complete fighters in the sport.

All eyes are upon Ward but the 27-year old seems unsure what move is next for him.

This forced strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza to put Khan through a grueling grind in preparation for his showdown with Peterson at the Convention Center in Washington DC on Sunday, Manila Time in a fight card that will be telecast by AKTV IBC 13 on “Bigtime Bakbakan” at 10:00 a.m.

In an overseas telephone conversation with the Manila Standard, Ariza said Khan “has physically grown out of his shell. He is much, much stronger than he was in the last couple of fights.”

The strength and conditioning coach said Khan “is coming along great. This is the best camp that we’ve ever had and that’s true.”

Ariza noted that when “opponents prepare to fight one of our guys they take their game to another level so I won’t speculate what’s going to happen. All I know is I have my guy in the best shape and as strong as I possibly could for this fight.”

He said he had pushed Khan harder than ever before and that the 24 year old Briton has shown amazing ability to withstand pain and is now also mentally very strong.

Ariza told us that Amir Khan plans to move up to welterweight and that he really hopes Floyd Mayweather Jr will fight him.

Khan is coming off a 5th round knockout of veteran IBF champion Zab Judah last July 23 while Petersn won an IBF title eliminator beating Victor Manuel Cayo by a 12th round knockout last July 29.

Peterson praised Khan for his willingness to fight in his hometown saying he respected him for it, pointing out that “most world champions wouldn’t do that.”

The challenger said fight fans in the US like Khan who “throws a lot of punches and works the whole fight” but said he is “prepared to go into whatever territory it takes to beat him.”

Called "one of Britain's greatest boxing champions," by British Embassy representative Philip Barton recently, Khan visited The White House, the United States Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

"I've always wanted to fight in the capitol, and I've always wanted to fight in different states to build my status in way of a professional. I want people to know who Amir Khan is. Also, it's going to build my fan base," said Khan, an English-born practicing Muslim of Pakistani decent who became an Olympic silver medalist in Athens at the age of 17 in 2004.

"They want to see me. It's different watching on T.V. than watching live performances. And I want to give everyone the chance to see me fight live, and this is the best way of doing it, is to travel and fight away from where you feel comfortable fighting."

"Capitol Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson" has the 24-year-old Khan (26-1, 18 knockouts) facing the 27-year-old Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KOs) in his Washington, D.C., debut. And he's doing so in the hometown of Peterson, who grew up in Washington's Southeast section.

"It's just the way I am. I'm not afraid to fight away from home. We could have chosen to fight in England, Manchester, or even fight in Los Angeles or Vegas again away from Lamont's hometown and his home state," said Khan.

"But we thought, 'We'll take the fight to him, and we'll face someone who's in the top five in the world, and he's in the top ten and he's ranked No. 1 in the IBF. So we'll fight him, and once we beat him, then there are no excuses.'"

Khan wants to face WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0-0) on May 5.

Mayweather is currently trying to secure the highly anticipated super-fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2), and Khan made it clear he doesn't mind being second choice.

"On paper I'm the best he could face, if he doesn't face Manny Pacquiao," Khan said while talking to BBC Radio 5. "If I didn't think I could beat Floyd Mayweather and I didn't have the style, the speed and the power to beat him, then I wouldn't even be talking about it. I don't want to be a challenger going into these fights. I want to be a champion and the winner. I know that Floyd has never faced the speed and the power than I have. I have the best trainer in the world, in my corner, who will give me the right instructions to beat him,"

While a fight between Khan and Mayweather won't be as huge as the anticipated super-fight against Pacquiao, Khan is a worthy opponent for Mayweather. Khan is currently on an eight fight winning streak, and he's coming off an impressive knockout victory over former IBF light-welterweight champion Zab Judah.

Khan is loved by British boxing fans, and a fight against Mayweather will create a big stir across the pond. Boxing fans should expect a Mayweather vs. Hatton type British invasion, if Khan ends up getting the next shot at Floyd. Khan will have his work cut out for him though, given the fact he's never fought as a welterweight in his professional career.

Mayweather has already indicated he won't fight Khan unless he proves himself against one of his fighters, Jesse Vargas (17-0-0), and it's highly unlikely he'll change his mind. If Khan truly wants Mayweather, he'll probably have to take Vargas fight.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum confirmed the title fight in a text message to the Manila Standard.

Donaire who was married in a spectacular church wedding to his wife Rachel last November 11 is coming off a lopsided, shutout defense of his WBC/WBO bantamweight title against undefeated two-division champion Omar Narvaez of Argentina at The Theater in Madison Square Garden last October 22.

Although Donaire tried his best, the smaller Narvaez who moved up in weight to take the fight refused to engage, making for a disappointing fight although HBO commentator and former pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr praised Donaire for his skill and style and blamed Narvaez for refusing to trade shots with Donaire.

Donaire, obviously having problems making the 118 pound limit announced that he was moving up to 122 pounds and Arum who had planned a fight against Arce and Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka next year said he had picked Vazquez since Arce was moving down to fight Indonesia’s Angy Angkota for the WBO bantamweight title vacated by Donaire..

The 27 year old Vazquez Jr won the vacant 122 pound title with a 4th round knockout of former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona on February 27, 2010 in Puerto Rico but lost the crown to Arce in a sensational 12th round TKO on May 7 this year.

The 29 year old Donaire who the WBC/WBO bantamweight title with a spectacular 2nd round TKO of Mexican veteran Fernando Montiel with a cracking left hook that is regarded as probably the knockout of the year.

Arum had earlier planned to stage two fights for Donaire within the first six months of 2012 with Arce and Nishioka as opponents and booking a June 7 date for a possible title fight against either opponent at the spanking, new Mall of Asia coliseum which is still under construction.

Donaire and Vazquez are both skilled and exciting fighters and the title clash should draw a huge following although there is no indication as yet where it will be held.

Donaire is currently in the top 5 of the Ring Magazine pound for pound rankings behind countryman Manny Pacquiao with Floyd Mayweather Jr at No. 2.

Amir Khan wants to take on Floyd Mayweather in the next 12 months, and bookies can’t wait to see this happen.

UK bookmaker services found out that the light-welterweight world champion, 24-years-old, said that he will be ready to face him a year down the line, when he moves up a division.

Bookies are waiting for December 10th to arrive, as then, Khan will be defending his WBA and IBF titles against Lamont Peterson live on Sky Sports HD, but the countdown to that started by calling out the man that many consider the world’s best fighter.

Bookies dealing with boxing are currently talking about a long-awaited bout between his stablemate Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather , but the boy from Bolton, who will be turning 25 two days before the clash with Peterson, won’t hesitate in defeating the Filipino to the sport’s richest prize.

But Khan, who in 27 professional fights only lost once and is a two-weight world champion, believes that he is able to make a huge surprise and end ‘Money’s’ proud undefeated record, and bookies would like to see if this will really happen, and can’t wait to find out.

“A Mayweather fight, you know that fight can happen within the next nine to 12 months,” he said.

“It’s a fight that I want, it’s a fight that the public want – it’s a public demand fight and also boxing fans would love to see that fight instead of Mayweather fighting someone they know he’d beat.

“Against me Mayweather will have problems and it will be a tough fight for him.

“By the time that fight will come I’ll be 25 – I’ll be more mature, more stronger, more experienced. It’ll be a perfect time for me.”

The claims by Khan were backed up by trainer Freddie Roach, only days after Pacquiao controversially defeated Juan Manuel Marquez with a majority decision.

But UK bookmaker services can see that Roach has not doubt whatsoever that Khan has the power and speed to prevail at welterweight.

“That would be a great fight for us,” he said.

“I would love that fight next if he moves up to 147 because I think Amir at 147 will be bigger, stronger and more resilient than ever and I love that fight.”

WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan predicts that pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao “will walk through” WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez in the third fight of what is expected to be another classic in their storied trilogy at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, Manila Time.

In an interview with the Manila Standard from the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles where he was working out, Khan said although Pacquiao “should walk through him this time because Manny is totally different but it should be a good fight.”

Khan said Pacquiao has ‘‘looked great in training, looks sharp and strong” while Marquez “looks big with a heavy upper body and I think he’s going to try to win by overpowering Manny. But

I think Manny is going to be too slick and too quick.”

While conceding that Marquez is a Mexican warrior who comes to fight Khan said Pacquiao’s hand-speed and quick footwork would overcome Marquez size.

Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza who didn’t join the Team Pacquiao entourage which left for Las Vegas after a final workout said Pacquiao has been “really cooperative in slowing down and not pushing as hard as he normally does and he’s taking the fight seriously.”

Ariza said he sparred four rounds with Raymund Beltran but “it wasn’t a hard four rounds just to stay sharp and focused and then went some rounds with trainer Freddie Roach on the punch-mitts.”

Three division world champion Marquez made a grand arrival aboard his specially designed bus at the lobby of the MGM Grand where he was greeted by cheering fans with many Mexicans among the crowd.

Marquez who in a recent conference call stated “ without a doubt the fight is personal for me. I didn’t get the two decisions I thought I won. I think I will win this fight because I should have won the first two.”

Marquez predicted “its going to be great because we both want this fight and we are going to give it our all.”

Already being a very good friend of Pacquaio under the same guardianship in boxing training with Freddie Roach he has more than a right to give his professional boxing opinions and have a direct view of a more of a certain determination as the current WBA and IBF Light Welterweight World Champion. As Khan said in one of his interviews with me that when he did retire that he may like to go into commentating, what a good way to get more experience in this field, especially from the viewpoint of someone who has only one loss to his record and can give his perspective on the night of this trilogy fight.

Amir Khan said on press release, "I'm really looking forward to seeing some action on November 12th, I've been with Manny for some of his camp and I can tell you he is looking razor sharp in the gym. His speed and power is coming together at the right time but we all know how dangerous opponent Juan Manuel Marquez is. He's shown in his previous two fights between them there is no quit in him and that he the ability to cause Manny some trouble. Like everyone I'm excited about the fight because it's clear that it's going to be one's that boxing fans are going to love."

In addition to this main event Top Rank have also have some delightful undercards the WBO Jr. Welterweight Championship fight between Timothy Bradley and Joel Casamayor and the IBF Latino Jr. Welterweight Championship fight between Mike Alvarado and Bredis Prescott. We all know and don't have to emphasize that Khan lost to Prescott and he did say that once he Prescott does get a world title win, he'll be more than happy to fight him as well, as Khan never backs away from a fight and he's always ready to fight any boxer. He said, " Prescott is coming off a loss to Paul McCloskey but I'm sure he will that this fight is his last chance at reaching the big time and getting into world-title contention, since we fought his career has not progressed the way he would of wanted but he is a dangerous fighter because of his punching power and that makes fans interested especially he is up against Alvarado who is undefeated."

With regard to Timothy Bradley, Khan added, "Timothy Bradley is another name on the undercard that I'm sure many will want to watch just to see how he looks after his long lay-off."

This event will be aired on 12th November and will be screened exclusively in the UK on Primetime at £14.95 and on Top Rank Boxing in the states on pay per view.

Makati City, Philippines - While "trick-or-treaters" hit the streets in the US, it was the beginning of "Undas" in Manila, when the predominantly Catholic nation mourn and commemorate the dead and the saints in an extended holiday weekend.

In town was Nonito Donaire, Jr., who is coming off his successful title defense against then undefeated challenger Omar Narvaez in New York, together with his beautiful wife Rachel who is also mourning the loss of her grandmother Ines Marcial who passed away last October 13. Donaire dedicated his recent win in New York to his grandmother-in-law.

The couple were in good spirits and enjoyed the ambience as we dined at one of their favorite spots in Greenbelt 3 in Makati. Fans were quick to spot the laid back and chill Donaire, who happily obliged every photo and autograph request that came his way.

As usual, I took the opportunity to talk to Donaire about matters regarding his boxing career and things in-between, and update his fans about the things that are going around him.

On the Narvaez fight:

ND - "He caught me at a lucky time for him. I was coming off a long layoff and I really wanted to put on a show for the New York crowd. We packed MGM man, but he didn't want to fight. Clottey stood in front of Pacquiao with his guard and allowed Pacquiao to hit him, but this guy (Narvaez) was on his feet before I could even throw any of my power shots. I wasn't able to hit him with any of my real power shots because he would already be running after I throw my jabs and set-up punches. He didn't want to fight. He was happy to finish the fight. But during the post-fight press conference, he said he felt my punches even when he blocked them."

"I may have overtrained for this fight a little bit. A lot of things went on and around the 8th round, I started to cramp up from chasing him the whole time. When I threw that one punch, I felt my leg give up on me. He was lucky, but even if I was cramping, I tried to make it an exciting fight and I went after him, but he just didn't want to engage. That won't happen again. I was away from the sport for much too long."

On his next opponent:

"I'm ready for whoever. Maybe after seeing that last fight, some of these guys will want to fight me since Narvaez finished the fight. I want whoever is willing to step to the challenge and fight me; Arce, Nishioka, Darchinyan, whoever! But they will have to do it for the right reasons, and not just want to get paid then they won't come to fight. I want to fight the best and I'm ready to move up and face anybody."

On comments floated on the forums that Boom Boom Bautista said he wanted to fight him (Boom Boom told me the said comments are fabricated):

"I know Boom Boom from training with him in the past. It doesn't sound like something that would come from him. He's a nice and humble person.
By Luis Sandoval

A few weeks ago trainer Freddie Roach made some unflattering comments regarding WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire. Roach said Donaire wouldn’t stand a chance if he moved up and fought featherweight kingpin Yuriorkis Gamboa and he was either lucky or his last four opponents were just plain dumb to get knocked out with the same left hook.

When Roach spoke to Boxingscene and other members of the media at Manny Pacquiao’s open work out, he was asked what he thought of Donaire’s performance against Omar Narvaez and if he still felt Donaire was overrated.

“I never said Donaire was overrated” responded Roach. “I don’t know where that came from. Donaire is a friend of mine and I like Donaire a lot. I think he’s a great fighter”.

Donaire who is regarded as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport, had a lackluster performance last Saturday on HBO when his opponent Narvaez refused to let his hands go and was defensive for most of the fight.

Freddie went on to give his take on the fight by saying “I think he fought a guy who had a game plan this time and the guy knew not to go right in and get hit by the hook”.

Donaire was recently on Boxingscene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab and was asked about what he thought of Roach’s initial comments. Nonito didn’t seem bothered and said the world renowned trainer was entitled to his opinion.

Looks like Roach didn’t mean any harm or disrespect with those comments as he cleared the air one final time.

“I have nothing against Donaire. I talk to Donaire all the time” said Roach. “He’s a great guy. A great champion and I wish him well”.

PETERSON A HOT TICKET OR ARE FANS BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF?

Apparently, the upcoming jr. welterweight clash between WBA & IBF champion Amir Khan and challenger Lamont Peterson is a hot ticket, or so it would seem. Tickets priced at $25, $50, $75, $150, and $300 went on sale Friday morning at 10:00 AM ET and could be purchased through Ticketmaster via phone or online at www.ticketmaster.com. In less than 15 minutes, fans on a budget that were hoping to attend the event with a guest had no choice but to dip into their savings as the only tickets left available were in the $150 and $300 price range. FightHype.com received an email from a fan who informed us that by 10:12 AM ET, a representative from Ticketmaster told him that tickets priced at $25, $50, and $75 were essentially all sold out.

Upon receiving the email, we promptly checked ticketmaster.com and sure enough, all attempts at purchasing 2 tickets priced at $25, $50 and $75 were met with the message, "Sorry, no exact matches were found, but other tickets may still be available." To be fair, if any fans are planning on sitting by themselves, at least you can still buy 1 ticket at those prices. That being said, there's no guarantee that will still be the case by the time this is published since, according to the ticketmaster representative, roughly 10 seats, scattered around the arena, were available in the cheaper price range. One has to wonder why the promotional company, in this case Golden Boy Promotions, even bothers to inform fans in advance that tickets are on sale if, after just 15 minutes, there are none available. To quote the fan who sent us the email, "Khan vs Peterson is cool, but this DC card ain't selling like that."

Considering how quickly tickets in 3 out of the 5 available prices were unavailable, it should be interesting to see just how packed the Washington Convention Center is on December 10. Is this truly a case of a card being a hot ticket or are fans just getting taken advantage of by the backdoor deals made between promoters and ticket brokers? Check out the email we recieved from FightHype reader Chip and judge for yourself:

This is the shit that kills boxing. I log on at 9:55 into my Ticketmaster account. At 10:00am I go to make my purchase and I try to order 5 of the $25 tix. I was gonna treat 4 of my friends who have never been to a live boxing event.

So the $25 tix weren't available. I tried 10 times, figuring there was a glitch. I tried the $50 tix. Same deal. So I call ticketmaster for the $75 tix. I couldn't afford 5 so I tried to get 3. They were sold out. It was 10:12.

Look man. Khan vs Peterson is cool, but this DC card ain't selling like that. So I ask the Ticketmaster rep what the deal was. He told me there were like 10 of the $25 Tix available. He said the same for the $50 and $75 Tix.

This is bullshit! He said try back Monday when a lot of the credit card payments get rejected. So I guess the house will be "papered".

Funny thing is this: I went to a UK website that sells the tickets at all prices. I went all the way to the "pay now" portion and the sale would've went through. It was set up for Khan fans that want to travel but it allows US fans to buy. You get a special code to take to the door for Will Call. I'm so tempted to do this but I'm scared to trust this website. I know it's legit...

Top Rank is taking steps to ensure that the travesty that was Nonito Donaire versus Omar Narvaez will not happen again. A ton of blame went their way because of the horrible fight and it is good to know that they are taking steps to prevent the same thing from happening.

Their solution is to promise a 100,000 dollar on Donaire’s head and, truth be told, they should do the same for Manny Pacquiao. Because Pacquiao and Donaire are known for their devastating power, some of their opponents choose to not fight back as an act of self-preservation. If they fight back, chances are they will get beaten to a bloody pulp and lose. If they choose not to fight back, they will still lose but they skip through that nasty getting beaten to a bloody pulp bit, which also means they will enjoy their purse better after the fight.

Donaire who was quoted saying that he was bored during the fight had positive things to say about the bounty. “(I’m) excited about the future matchups considering the $100k bounty on my head. Great to be working on the same path as Top Rank Boxing," he said. Another reason for him to be happy is that he’ll have the equal opportunity to get the money. The 100,000 dollars will be a “win" bonus, meaning the winner will get the money on top of the guaranteed purse. This is currently being done in the UFC and its’ not clear yet if a knockout is required to get the bonus.

Freddie Roach has employed the same tactic for Pacquiao’s sparring sessions. He always has 1,000 dollars in his pocket, ready to give it away to anyone who would knock Pacquiao down. It is a good amount of money and Pacquiao’s sparring partners have all tried extra hard to push him harder for a shot at the money.

It seems to be a band-aid fix as the best solution is still to choose only those fighters who will now stop fighting but this will have to do for Donaire right now. It’s a good PR move from Top Rank’s part as it will at least show the pissed off fans that they are doing something to rectify the error.

Now that Top Rank and Donaire are moving on from the embarrassing event last week, they are looking at three possible opponents for Donaire’s debut at 122. The always entertaining WBO junior featherweight beltholder Jorge Arce (58-6-1, 44 KOs), WBC super bantamweight titleholder Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs), and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs) are all viable opponents.

Arce seems like the most logical pick as the world knows he does not stop punching. It will be a very good comeback and it will surely wash away the bad taste that Narvaez left. He is signed with Top Rank and the fight will be very easy to make.

Vasquez is also a possible opponent. Although he lost to Arce, he still is a threat in the super bantamweight division. He is scheduled for a comeback fight and if he wins that convincingly, it may convince Top Rank to book him as Donaire’s debut at 122.

However, a fight against Nishioka, who’s coming of the biggest win of his career by beating Rafael Marquez, is the better match-up. The Japanese champion is a lanky fighter and is as tall as Donaire. If Donaire wants to make a statement, he should go for the current top dog of the division.

The Narvaez fight was supposed to signal Donaire’s emergence as one of the very best in the sport but an unwilling opponent prevented it from happening. If Donaire still wants to stake his claim as one of the best, he should do away fight tune-up fights to get himself acclimated to the super bantamweight division.

Current WBO/WBC bantamweight world champion Nonito Donaire spoke with 8CN and discussed his recent victory of the very tough Omar Narvaez. Donaire fought one of his best fights despite not getting a knockout. He tells 8CN that he would like to fight the extremely popular Jorge Arce next. This is a great fight if it happens, both style match up wise, and marketing wise.

Nonito also breaks down Pacquiao Vs. Marquez. He like many others in the fight game is favoring a sound victory for Pacquiao in this one.

TOP Rank promoter Bob Arum is working on trying to get World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Yoshiaki Nishioka of Japan (39-4-3, 24 KOs) to defend his title against WBC/World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (27-1, 18 Kos), who is determined to move up in weight for his next fight.

Donaire and his trainer Robert Garcia, as well as Arum, announced that the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound no. 4 behind countrymen and no.1 Manny Pacquiao, fought his last fight at bantamweight when he scored a 12-round shutout against two-division champion Omar Andres Narvaez of Argentina at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York Saturday.

Arum told Manila Standard that the 35-year-old Nishioka, who defended his super bantamweight title successfully for the sixth time in a close battle with Mexico’s Rafael Marquez last Oct. 1, wanted to rest until May or June after the tough fight with Marquez, but was willing to face Donaire in the middle of 2012.

Arum said he planned on staging the Nishioka title fight with Donaire at the new 18,000-seat coliseum of the Mall of Asia, which is scheduled to open next year, but was convinced that a fight against WBO super bantamweight champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce (58-6-2, 45 Kos) would be a much bigger draw in Manila because of the storied Philippine-Mexican rivalry and Arce’s warrior mentality in the ring.

Arum said he would talk to Nishioka’s handler, Japanese businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda, to try to convince the Japanese to defend his title against Donaire early next year, but should that fail to materialize, he would look for some other worthy opponent to take his place.

One name that emerged was that of former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who lost the title to Arce last May 7 in a stunning 12th-round technical knockout. At the time of the stoppage, two judges had the fight even, while a third had Arce winning.

In the wake of what appeared to be a lack of effort by WBO junior bantamweight beltholder Omar Narvaez (35-1-2, 19 KOs), who lost every round on the cards of the three judges scoring his challenge against Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) last Saturday, Top Rank Inc. President Todd duBoef is offering a $100,000 bonus to Donaire’s next opponent to encourage the fighter to compete.

The bonus would be given in addition to the boxers' contracted purse, which, for Narvaez, was $50,000 in defeat at WaMu Theater inside Madison Square Garden compared to Donaire's $700,000.

"It's no bounty at all on his head. I only feel like I got robbed by an opponent who took a lot of money and didn’t fight and then had the audacity to climb the ropes and raise his arms at the end of the bout," wrote duBoef in an e-mail to RingTV.com.

"I did discuss it with Donaire's manager [Cameron Dunkin,] who said he and Nonito support it because they were equally frustrated. The Donaire-Top Rank relationship is closer than ever and totally aligned. Navarez let me and the fans down. That Theatre was ready to erupt for a good old prize fight."

Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum has hinted that either WBO junior featherweight beltholder Jorge Arce (58-6-1, 44 KOs) of Mexico and WBC super bantamweight titleholder Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs) of Japan could be next for Donaire.

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs) could also be a consideration for Donaire. Arce dethroned Vazquez Jr. in May by 12th-round knockout.

As a rather dull main event unfolded between Nonito Donaire and Omar Narvaez the other night on HBO, the bulk of the conversation drifted to something else, much like it does when there is a blowout in a football game. A frustrated Donaire was doing his best to make a fight of it, but Narvaez was strictly in survival mode, trying his best to go the distance.

The fight looked good on paper, with Narvaez taking his shiny undefeated record and two world titles into the fray. In the matchup and in the ring it was quite a different story.

Ultimately the discussion between HBO announcers Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. turned to the motivation Narvaez had actually brought into the ring. Kellerman was remarking, rightly so, that Narvaez was not going to have any chance without throwing punches, and that he had resigned himself not to throw them. Lampley chimed in a bit. Those guys were giving us a perspective from what could be considered a fan’s point of view. Jones, who has been a prospective survivor a few times since he turned 40, was taking the fighter’s perspective. From one standpoint, that is indeed what he gets paid for. But THIS fighter’s perspective was a bit too, well, warped.

Jones said, in essence, that during the interview the announcing crew did with Narvaez the day before the fight, it was made somewhat clear by the fighter that he had shown up in New York City not necessarily to win, but to show off some of his defensive skills in an attempt to last the entire distance, and pick up a payday. By way of his actions, Narvaez was doing nothing to make a liar out of Jones.

Well, we appreciate that kind of honesty from a boxing commentator, but his attitude in communicating that honesty came off as if to say to Lampley and Kellerman, “Hey, leave the guy alone. He’s trying to pick up a paycheck.” At one point, Jones even questioned why Narvaez would want to engage and incur unnecessary blows to the head.

That kind of discussion is fair enough to have – when you’re amongst friends and colleagues in the lobby of the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from the Garden, or shooting the breeze with people at the Carnegie Deli after the fight. At the microphone, at ringside, on an HBO telecast, it was insulting to the audience.

If I managed Narvaez, and his general disposition was safety-first, I don’t know that I would advise him to spoil that undefeated record by going into a fight where he was almost sure to lose. Then again, he (and I, as his manager) didn’t make that kind of money before, and probably wasn’t going to again.

Which brings us back to a guy just going in there for the paycheck.

Any boxing fans or matchmakers who are paying attention will tell you that those kind of “agony” fights are the worst that can possibly be made. It’s the same thing, round after round, and when a guy is intent just to get to the final bell it is not an entertaining experience for the viewer but rather a painful one. When you have that kind of difference between two guys in a ring, most people would rather see it come to an end inside of twelve rounds; maybe inside of four rounds.

I give credit to Narvaez for his grit in going the distance, and for his defensive chops. But the place for that kind of fight is in a non-featured part of an undercard – like one of those Don King undercards that begin at about 4 PM and last forever, before most of the paying customers come through the door. Because this isn’t what people pay for. This is a civilian view but not a pedestrian one. I was in the business for years and I can tell you that above all, it is the entertainment business. The intrinsic value of “championships” is limited; ultimately if you can’t please a crowd and put people in the seats, or in front of a television, you aren’t going to have an value. Perhaps that’s why Narvaez hasn’t been able to make any money, and maybe when fighters and/or network executives neglect that simple truth, it explains at least a little about how boxing can lose people to something else.

So I guess I would like to throw the question out to the audience – is that the kind of fight that is better left “dark”? And was Narvaez’s effort, as well as the efforts of others who do essentially the same thing, something that cheats the customer (whether live or on TV)? Or, considering this fight could have crept onto a pay-per-view card just as easily, is such a defensive fight somehow attractive enough to command an hour or so of your time in the future, or any of your money? In other words, is it of any particular concern to you that a fighter just came in for a payday and little else?

Let us know.

For twelve frustrating and tepid rounds, Donaire tried to figure out a way to crack through the shell of tough Argentinean Omar Narvaez but instead had to settle for a unanimous decision verdict that saw him win all twelve rounds on all three judges’ cards while defending his WBC and WBO bantamweight titles.

Subpar action aside, the 28-year old Donaire is still one of the most intriguing and physically-blessed fighters in the game. His future endeavors will be charted with a microscope, as is the custom with the best fighters in the sport, and it’s without question that opponents far more willing and dangerous than Narvaez will rise to the surface.

Veteran analyst Larry Merchant, a staple on HBO’s airwaves for over thirty years, has seen just about every scenario imaginable play out inside of the squared circle and gave his take on Narvaez’s actions, or lack thereof, last night.

“If he’s not trying to win, if he’s just there to survive, he can survive,” Merchant stated during out conversation moments after the fight. “That’s unfortunate but the best fighters, the most exciting fighters in history, have gone up against guys whose instinct for self-preservation kicked in for the fight and they decide to survive. It’s like when a pitcher wants to walk a slugger, you’re not going to see him slug.”

Donaire had been inactive since his February thrashing of Fernando Montiel in Las Vegas and was aching to return with an electrifying performance. And while it didn’t happen, Merchant can sympathize with how Donaire feels and casts no blame towards him.

“The fighters understand what happens,” Merchant stated. “Does it affect them? Yeah, they’re human. And a guy goes out there and he’s not trying to play the game, he’s just trying to get to the end of the fight without being knocked out and is willing to think that surviving looks good on his resume or feels good that he was able to do it against a superior fight. We’ve seen if before. It’s not a new movie.”

The next move for Donaire is a trek up to the junior featherweight class, where it seems that either WBO champion Jorge Arce or WBC boss Toshiaki Nishioka will be awaiting him next, and Merchant will be watching eagerly.

“This is what happens when there’s no serious competition [in his weight class],” Merchant added. “He’s going to go up in weight and you want to see what happens, whether he takes his punch with him or whether fighting bigger guys, maybe they will be more willing to engage him. Hopefully he gets the opportunity to show what he’s got at 122 and eventually featherweight.”

Donaire was born in the city of Bohol in the Philippines before relocating to San Leandro, California as a youth and there have been some who like to compare him to his countryman Manny Pacquiao, even though Donaire is a completely different fighter. Merchant recognizes the potential in Nonito and you can sense his enthusiasm coming through when eyeing what the future holds for him.

“I like Donaire. There’s nothing not to like. Anytime you see an explosive, exciting fighter and it’s good for boxing, you want to see him progress. It’s obvious, the connection to Pacquiao and how Pacquiao grew and got better and we want to see what this kid is capable of. Basically he’s Filipino and he has that connection but he’s also an American kid who grew up here. You can’t get enough of these kind of guys in boxing.”

A hurricane, they said. At the end he did not even win a round.

Omar Narvaez (35-1-2-19KO) turned out to be less than a tropical depression. He was more like an April shower that would barely grow flowers.

Now I know why they never got him a fight outside of Argentina, except for 3 fights in Europe. He was a fake!

I wonder what happened to the 35 wins in his record. Surely they can’t be all tuk-tuk drivers!

Nonito Donaire, (27-1-0, 18KO) hard as he tried never got a fight because Narvaez did not come to fight. He quit as soon as he felt the power in round 4.

It appears Narvaez just came for the payday and perhaps a tour of the Big Apple.

What cracks me up was that he had the audacity to get up on the ropes to raise his hands. Perhaps he was celebrating his survival from the devastating punches of Donaire.

It’s no small wonder the New York fans chanted “This is bull shit.”

Now that the Narvaez non-fight is done, Nonito Donaire must move on. He should move up to 122 and then to 126 and do the big money fights and save enough for his future.

The Narvaez debacle must serve as a lesson. No more of those widely-hyped but unproven opponents. They are just a waste of Donaire’s talents.

We would love to see the Toshiaki Nishioka next at 122 lbs. That would be a real test for the Flash.

So how about it, Uncle Bob? Shall be say March or April 2012?

Let’s get it done!

The 28-year-old Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs) was the bigger man, after all, having tipped the scales at 118 pounds for each of his previous bantamweight bouts -- a fourth-round knockout of Wladimir Sidorenko in his division debut in December of last year, and a follow-up second-round stoppage of three-division titlewinner Fernando Montiel in February.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old southpaw Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KOs) was supposed to be the smaller man, yet he weighed-in at a career-high for his bantamweight debut.

So when Donaire's numbers were read aloud, the man nicknamed "The Filipino Flash" swiftly stepped off the scale, briefly turned his arms skyward and shrugged his shoulders in disbelief.

Who was to blame? Nutritionist Victor Conte, of course.

"Exactly. It was a surprise to everybody, and everybody looked at me," said Conte. "A Top Rank [Inc.] official looked at me and said, 'Victor, what happened?'"

Conte believes that the official scale was weighing the participants light.

"We brought a scale down to the official one, then they calibrated it exactly, took it back up to the room, had it on a flat surface with no carpet on anything else," said Conte. "On that one, Nonito weighed straight up at 118, and then came down to their scale and weighed in at 116.25."

Also winner of IBF flyweight and interim WBA junior bantamweight belts, Donaire's will face Narvaez in an HBO-televised bout that is taking place at WaMu Theater inside Madison Square Garden, marking the debut at the venue for both fighters.

Trainer Robert Garcia said Donaire weighed 124 pounds prior to a Thursday evening workout, and was "about a pound and a half over about an hour before the weigh-in" before sweating it off.

Despite the fact that Donaire has admitted to walking around at "about 145 pounds" when he is not in preparation for a fight, Garcia said that he was not worried about Donaire.

RingTV.com caught up to Donaire in the Affinia Hotel's lobby on Friday evening for his perspective on the weigh-in and to address concerns about the potential effects of his extreme weight-loss measures.

UPDATE: Donaire weighed 131 pounds at 1:54 a.m. on Saturday after this interview.

RingTV.com: So what is your take on what happened?

Nonito Donaire: First of all, I don't think that I can make 116. But I guess that the scale showed 116. I mean, my scale in the room said straight up 118 to me.

When I had to come down in weight, I was cutting down the last pound upstairs. I had to do it twice. I was at 118.4 pounds and I dropped it down to 118-flat. You know?

I went down and when I stepped onto the scale, and when it said 116 -- boom -- I was shocked and surprised. So, I felt that even the guy was heavy.

Narvaez, had to be 119, because I always based my weight on that scale, and the past two times before, it was at 118. It had never gone wrong. I don't know.

RingTV.com: So what is your conclusion about the fact that the official scale read 116.4?

ND: I don't know. It's a digital scale. What I have is a digital. What they had was digital. They put it on a [platform] where a lot of people were stepping on the [platform] and it was on top of a carpet.

A lot of things could have been wrong. A lot of things could have contributed to the fact that it gave a different reading. But I don't think that I ever weighed as light as 116 today.

RingTV.com: What do you think your true weight was?

ND: Well, I know that I was 118. I know that I've always checked myself and it has read that I'm 118. I always known where I need to be. It's always been that way.

I've never ever made a mistake. The only difference usually is like a half a pound or a quarter of a pound. It's never been two pounds.

RingTV.com: For all of the fans and those who have heard about your well-documented increasing difficulty in making weight for this fight, what can you say to quash their concerns about the potential for having perhaps over-trained?

ND: Well, I mean, there's really nothing else that you can say except that I'm confident. That's one thing that I have is confidence. I'm ready the fight.

I'm ready for anything. I can go 12 rounds, I can go 24 rounds. I'm ready for this. It's not going to make a difference if I cut down. I mean, I know how to cut.

I'm really smart in knowing my body and knowing my health. It doesn't matter if I had to go down to 115. It's still going to be the same thing. I know how to cut.

RingTV.com: But you have also stated that this is your last fight at 118, so you know when to move up in weight, right?

ND: Yes I do, and this is it. Even if I went to 115 or 116, and even if I know how to do it the right way, I just don't want to go through what I had to go through today again. [Laughs.]

You know what I mean? So I feel great. Now I'm fully recovered and I still have a lot more hours to go, and I mean I feel great. Trust me.

RingTV.com: What did you have for dinner tonight?

ND: I a great steak. We went to [Kobe Japanese Steakhouse.] I had a steak and mashed potatoes. And it was just a lot of food.

But the ratios of carbohydrates and proteins were good. Two hours after the weigh-in, I was weighing 128 pounds on my own scale. So right now, I'm probably at around 130.

I've got to go and check it. I'm getting there. I've got to go and get some chicken noodle soup, and I'm going to be set. I'm good to go.
