Picture the scene: into the 102nd minute, James Coppinger, on as a substitute and for his first appearance aged 40, wearing a kit he designed with his sons to mark almost two decades of service to Doncaster Rovers – as well as gold boots decorated with his initials and number – dispatches a free-kick into the top corner to earn a 3-3 draw. As the Yorkshire Post put it, all that was missing was the red Superman cape.</p><p>There were tears after that equaliser 10 days ago and last weekend marked another milestone: Coppinger’s 800th career appearance. But in the summer, after 17 seasons at Rovers, he is set to retire, even if a teeny part of him is wrestling with the idea. “If we got promoted to the Championship it would be so difficult to walk away but right now … there’s no doubt in my mind that at the end of the season that will be it,” Coppinger says. “I try not to think about it and go down that road. He nearly was named, mind: he had been booked twice in the competition which should trigger a ban, but according to the Doncaster Free Press the club were sent a list of suspended players and he wasn’t on it.<br></p><p><strong>However, they had a rummage through the rule books and said “Erm, are you absolutely sure about that?”</strong>, to which the authorities replied “oh yeah ur right he is banned soz lol.” I’m paraphrasing, but it would have been extremely interesting to see what would’ve happened had they relied on the initial reassurance and picked him. </p><p class="block-time published-time"> <time datetime="2019-02-17T15:19:10.890Z">3.19pm <span class="timezone">GMT</span></time> </p><p><strong>Martin Brown sounds like he approves of the Palace line-up and,</strong> unless that’s a typo, the Palace manager too. He writes: “Godson has chosen Meyer which is a real fans choice. After the last game his link play with the forwards was ace. Good call. You should be aware big Palace Ultras turnout today. Palace allocation sold out btw. But if you were around back then, you might be able to remember the last time Doncaster Rovers were at this stage of the FA Cup. Simply by showing up Grant McCann’s side have equalled their best ever performance in the old cup, last achieved back in a bygone era. That time they were a second tier team whereas now they’re in the third, but just like 63 years ago they face a top division team. Today, it’s Crystal Palace. Then, it was Tottenham, Danny Blanchflower and all, who would go on to lose in the semi-final to eventual winners Manchester City, in the Bert Trautmann final. </p><p><strong>Back then rotation wasn’t really a thing,</strong> even the finest teams treating lower league sides with due caution. It just shows you’ve got to keep your mind open,” says the free-scoring No 9, of whom Crystal Palace would be wise to be wary during Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at the Keepmoat Stadium. “Darren Ferguson was the manager back then. As soon as I left the room after meeting him, I knew I wanted to join Doncaster.
