I'm not sure how to end this really...

It's a combination of frustration, heartache and desperation. How can we, as a country, expect to enter the international arena - on any level - when what we offer visitors to our country is violent crime, theft, robbery and murder?

What have any of these people who fall prey to the thugs that inhabit - and yes those that rule - the country, done to deserve to have their emotional and physical freedom threatened and compromised?

Here we have a 22 year-old young man. His dream of becoming an international star rests on his performances in races in South Africa. His training is rigorous and steadfast. We all conform to the program. We all become aware of the needs of one another. This man has talent. He is an exceptional young athlete.

With nurturing and encouragement he can realize his dreams. With professional guidance and support from his manager, Craig, he WILL realize his dreams.

A Quick Peek Into Halloween Masks

A big part of the success of Halloween is the masks that are used to create the desired kind of effect

At the start of October, you will likely find lots of spooky decorations, costumes and props at various retail outlets, specialty and Dollar stores. This is a clear sign that many people love Halloween - the festival that is being celebrated at the end of the month.

It's during the Halloween festivities that you can be anything or anyone you want to be; go out to celebrate the occasion; have fun with friends and family or stay at home and welcome those who'll be visiting you for tricks or treats.

In the past many people spent more than a small fortune on their Halloween costumes and decor, but in today's economic climate it makes sense to economize, spend wisely, make your costumes where possible, and perhaps finish it off with environmentally-friendly make-up or face paint, hats and masks. If this is the first time you're including masks with the costumes for your family members, it would probably be best if you keep these simple and convenient to wear.

It's also a good idea to have the children in on the choosing or making of masks. Some masks, such as the latex types, that look very real can indeed be also very scary. As much as you'll be wanting to scare your neighbors and friends, you don't want shrieking children who become terrified after seeing the masks. I'd opt for taking the kids to the store if buying masks, so they can choose the kinds that they are comfortable with.

In choosing Halloween masks, you'll have in mind what or who your (or your family member's) main aim or character is. This will make it easier for you to decide what kind of masks will best fit your mood come October 31. What also needs to be considered is the family budget, the age-appropriate costumes for your children, and the ease with which you'll be able to assemble perhaps ore than a few costumes on the day - and then still apply all the finishing touches.

Wearing masks eliminates the need for wearing face-paint of make-up, unless of course you plan on removing your mask after a short while.

The holiday-time of elves, witches, and ghosts is Hallowe'en. It is not believed in here except by some children, who people the dark with bogies who will carry them away if they are naughty.

Join me on a journey back to the 19th Century, where Halloween was very much a part of life - and belief. On this page we will focus on American beliefs, traditions and celebrations, more particularly relating to witches and the decor for such Halloween festivities.

Let us commence our journey.

In Colonial days Halloween (ye olde Halloween was actually spelled Hallowe'en) was not celebrated much in America. Some English still kept the customs of the old world, such as apple-ducking and snapping, and girls tried the apple-paring charm to reveal their lovers' initials, and the comb-and-mirror test to see their faces. Ballads were sung and ghost-stories told, for the dead were thought to return on Halloween.

Elves, goblins, and fairies were native on American soil. The Indians believed in evil manitous, some of whom were water-gods who exacted tribute from all who passed over their lakes. Henry Hudson and his fellow-explorers haunted as mountain-trolls the Catskill range. Like Ossian and so many other visitors to the Otherworld, Rip Van Winkle was lured into the strange gathering, thinks that he passes the night there, wakes, and goes home to find that twenty years have whitened his hair, rusted his gun, and snatched from life many of his boon-companions.

While the original customs of Hallowe'en are being forgotten more and more across the ocean, Americans have fostered them, and are making this an occasion something like what it must have been in its best days.

All Halloween customs in the USA were borrowed directly or adapted from those of other countries. All superstitions, everyday ones, and those pertaining to Christmas and New Year's, have special value on Halloween. Of course now the extent and variation of celebrations extend far beyond what one would have imagined,

Halloween is a night of ghostly and merry revelry. Mischievous spirits choose it for carrying off gates and other objects, and hiding them or putting them out of reach.

"Dear me, Polly, I wonder what them boys will be up to to-night. I do hope they'll not put the gate up on the shed as they did last year." Wright: Tom's Halloween Joke.

Bags filled with flour sprinkle the passers-by. Door-bells are rung and mysterious raps sound on doors, things thrown into halls, and knobs stolen. Such innocent antics mean no more at Halloween than the tricks played the night before the Fourth of July have to do with the Declaration of Independence.

Parties were prepared for in secret. Guests were not to divulge the fact that they were invited. Often they came masked, as ghosts or witches.

This lens is not typically about "me" but about something relating to "me". As part of the Rocketmoms Summer Session 2011 we're required to build a lens "about me" or as I read it, "my stuff" or "important things in my life". All right so they're not stuff, nor are they things, but they are incredibly special, and each has taught me lessons in life that I may otherwise have never known.

We're in Mid-July here in the southern hemisphere. It's mid-winter and although it hasn't been the kind of winter one would experience in some regions of the northern hemisphere, we have experienced some "more than mild" spells i.e. it's been seriously bitter on some evenings, temperatures dropping to below zero.

I used to think that avocado pears were a summer crop, but looking at the enormous avocado pear laden trees in the beautiful garden of the wet-house I think I was horribly wrong in my previous assumption, or that because our winters are so mild, some days even hot, this crop can flourish throughout the year.

Doing research recently for a unit study on "where in the world does it come from?" for elementary schools, I stumbled upon a few websites that had me almost on the floor in tears of laughter... Uhhh... no really! In disbelief I clicked "Search" for information to substantiate the info I was reading, and of course off to the trusted Wikipedia for substantiation once again. Yes, sadly, it IS true... Throughout history people have made - and enforced - the strangest of strange laws and requirements in the governance of their countries, constituencies, states and provinces. Many laws stand today. I'm wondering if this is because they are so old they are forgotten or someone just hasn't had a chance to re-read the Book of Statues to see that Yes, times they are a-changing! Or, in many cases they have a-changed!

"You don't have to live in the US to Support Soldiers Angels - Adopt a Soldier NOW!"

My involvement with Soldiers Angels is - well I can't tell how or when it began, all I knew is that there was an Earth Angel who had a vision of hope, light and love and wanted to share it with the whole of the USA - and then the world - to support the troops, male and female, who had been deployed to various parts of the world. The enthusiasm, dedication and determination of this organisation cannot help but become inspirational to anyone who has lived in an area or country affected by war and/or poverty or been involved in one way or another with active members of the military, regardless of where in the world it may have been. Soldiers Angels is not only based in the USA but is now an international organisation.

I joined Soldiers Angels and soon became a (PROUD PROUD PROUD <- Did mention extremely proud?) Verified Angel whereafter I could adopt our first hero/shero. Why do soldiers need adopting? There's a wide variety of reasons, which I'll touch on in this page. Why do they get adopted? Because it is the least that can be done by someone who is in a position to supply a small piece of home comfort, a letter, card, anything to say "THANK YOU, YOU ARE REMEMBERED, YOU MAKE US PROUD, WE HOPE THIS SMALL TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION WILL GO SOME WAY IN RELIEVING THE DISCOMFORT OF THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH YOU ARE PROTECTING AND SERVING, OFTEN UNDER HORRENDOUS CONDITIONS."

No, I am not a US Citizen, nor do I live in the USA. I am not a member of the Allied Forces, nor am I in the military, although I have trained with the South African Defence Force (Now SANDF) in South Africa during the height of the African Bush War. I have close friends and family, some of whom have served or are serving in one or the other, some of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom, to serve and protect. I remind myself often that the US Military is not just based in the USA, Afghanistan or Iraq, but in Africa and other continents throughout the world. This is the story of Soldiers Angels (I'll refer to it as "SA" within this following passage), and the Motto which is now embedded in my mind and the minds of thousands of Angels worldwide:

May No Soldier Go Unloved
May No Soldier Walk Alone
May No Soldier Be Forgotten
Until They All Come Home

Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of providing aide and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and their families. SA was founded by Patti Patton-Bader, mother of two American Soldiers--one who returned home from a year's deployment to Iraq in 2004, and another who began a 15-month deployment to Iraq in late 2007. SA is an international organization with members in all fifty states, Puerto Rico, and several friendly countries who support America's men and women in uniform, and were incorporated in the state of Nevada in June of 2003.

SA are a continually-evolving, grassroots organization comprised of more than 200,000 volunteers in over twenty different teams and projects who have developed unique and effective ways to support members of the U.S. military. To date, our volunteers have sent tens of thousands of care packages and hundreds of thousands of letters to deployed service members; have supplied the wounded with First Response Packs directly at the Combat Support Hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan and the major military hospital in Germany, as well as provided care and comfort to those in stateside military and VA facilities; SA have provided emergency aid to military families in need; have partnered with the Department of Defense to provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptops to over 2,600 severely-wounded servicemembers; have provided flights to soldiers on leave or in emergency situations, and to their families wanting to be with them up return from overseas; SA provided Level III KEVLAR armored blankets to give personnel extra protection in their vehicles when it was needed; SA help to honor the families whose loved ones have paid the ultimate price for freedom and safety. With the assistance of generous supporters , the many volunteers of Soldiers' Angels have accomplished this and much, much more on behalf of the grateful citizens of the United States of America.

SA's slogan, "May No Soldier Go Unloved," encapsulates the motivation behind Soldiers' Angels. By working together with a common vision of service, the volunteers of Soldiers' Angels continue to make a visible difference in the lives of veterans, the wounded, deployed service members, and their families.

Hundreds of heroes are waiting for us. Many of them are waiting a number of weeks for their Angel to come along with personal attention and support.

"Are YOU an Angel-in-Waiting?"

As the U.S. military "surges" in Afghanistan, the waiting list will continue to grow, filled with deployed Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines facing danger amid much more austere living conditions than we've seen from Iraq.

If you haven't adopted a soldier, will you adopt one today? If you have an adopted soldier right now, will you invite a friend into Soldiers' Angels or sponsor a one-time care package?

Encouragement and care from a perfect stranger connected with the soldier only by common citizenship means more than words can explain. Just one care package a month and one letter a week can make all the difference for a deployed hero who needs to know that America supports him. For a hero facing huge challenges far from home, just knowing that someone cares can make her day.

Every Soldiers' Angels volunteer who adopts, joins a team or assists a project helps ensure "No Soldier Go Unloved." Angel volunteers support the troops in two main ways:

Associate Angels participate in the group activities and projects that do not involve personal information about soldiers or families. The tireless work and generosity of these patriots is the foundation of many important Soldiers' Angels projects. Scroll down to see the activities/projects Angels can join.

Verified Angels* have had their identities confirmed, and may participate in the Soldiers' Angels Forum and join any Soldiers' Angels team or project, including instantly adopting a deployed hero! For the deeper level of involvement this requires and the sensitive information shared with these Angels, Soldiers' Angels requires identify verification. Identity is verified through the normal processing of a checking account or credit card donation of as little as one dollar (the option of handling it by phone or letter is available)

Soldiers%u2019 Angels Projects in a Glance

Service Member Adoptions - Individuals sign up to adopt a service member, providing one letter a week and at least one package a month to deployed service members.

Letter Writing Team - Registered Soldiers' Angels who write to the service members who need additional support.

Living Legends - Soldiers' Angels provides a living tree or a wreath to the families of fallen heroes. This team also aids the families with added comfort and support.

Cards Plus Team - Provides cards of encouragement and support to deployed soldiers and their families.

Chaplain Support Team (CST) - Developed with the help from deployed chaplains, they supply requested chapel items, special appreciation letters, and "baggies from home" giftbags that chaplains can hand out to their soldiers as they provide comfort and assurance to their soldiers that they are not forgotten.

Wounded TLC Team - Angels send cards/letters of support to members of the military who have been wounded to thank them for their service and show they are not forgotten.

Operation SOS: KIDS - Helps humanitarian missions in-country led by service members supported by the Angels.

Hero Flights - Emergency travel & housing assistance for service members & their families.

“…as of last night, we are committed to work with Trust In Education to provide educational materials and books for a new school for 400 girls in Afghanistan!!… the name of the place in Afghanistan is FARZA, about 25 miles north of Kabul….there are teachers there but no building yet….the donations will not leave until the end of April which is fine….this new contact takes care of all the logistics etc….met the Ambassador last night….smart and committed….Nabi says not many kids learn English there but I convinced him it is a MUST….I am packing this all myself so all the books are culturally appropriate…I need learning toys and games….he said the stuffed toys will be a big hit…and, next year, Dan and I want to go there!!“

A bit about TIE – Trust In Education

BRINGING EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO VILLAGES IN AFGHANISTAN.

Education when combined with health care and economic development programs provide immediate relief and are the solutions to ending cyclical poverty. All programs are implemented in partnership with the community, thereby empowering Afghan communities with control over their lives.

Trust in Education (TIE) is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded in May 2003 to provide health care, education and economic development programs in Afghanistan. An equal amount of time is devoted to educating Americans about our involvement in Afghanistan, past, present and future. TIE connects American communities and Afghan villages. Through these exchanges everyone discovers that we share more in common than not and experience the joy of making a substantial and long lasting difference in the lives of thousands.

REBUILDING AFGHANISTAN

TIE first provided funding to build a secular school for boys and girls in Lalander, Afghanistan that opened in March, 2005. “Their school” is within a 15-minute walk from home, instead of the three hours it once took to reach schools in Kabul. In March 2006, adult education courses were added thereby enabling both young and old to learn. TIE also funds classes in homes, in response to threats and actions taken by the Taliban. If we provide a safe forum they will come.

In home classes are offered during the winter when the schools are closed. Their appetite for education is insatiable.

Education is the key that unlocks all doors.

About BOOKS for the BARRIOS

BOOKS for the BARRIOS began in 1981 among U.S. Navy families who were stationed in the Philippines. From 1981 to 1986, they worked closely with other knowledgeable, motivated volunteers as well as the U.S. Navy and Philippines Airlines to distribute hundreds of thousands of books throughout the Philippines. American children play a pivotal role in building and driving the organization's vision and operations. Growth of the organization into a worldwide project has been through the emphasis of the contribution and critical role of all participants, whether staff or volunteers.

Many developing countries are suffering from a “brain drain” losing many of its educated population for opportunities abroad, especially their most qualified teachers. The effects are widespread but strengthening the education is the key element in securing economic development and a better quality of life for citizens around the world.

To date, BOOKS for the BARRIOS has sent over 12 million books overseas, trained teachers in developing countries in a modern method of teaching and established over 50 Model-of-Excellence schools, helping millions of children throughout the world. The organization has expanded allowing it to reach needy schools by directly sending books to Mexico, Honduras, Philippines and Bhutan, as well as providing consulting services to other non-profit organizations who want to help over 140 book-deprived countries.

Today, a mounting debt, economic stagnation and decline and widening disparities among its people continue to plague all developing countries. This is happening on a global scale with widespread effects, but strengthening education is a key element in securing economic development throughout the world.

Michael Yon is an American author, independent reporter, and blogger. He was embedded with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment (Deuce Four) of the 25th Infantry Division in Mosul, Iraq until the end of its deployment in September 2005.

The mission of BOOKS for the BARRIOS is to strengthen public elementary school education worldwide, equal access to quality education to all children, most especially the disadvantaged children. We have many programs designed to help students and teachers, both at home in the U.S. and throughout the world. Over the past two decades, BOOKS for the BARRIOS has made a major impact on education in many impoverished areas of the world and on the awareness of U.S. children.
