Dave has built an amazing model train layout over the years. Have a look at the video above which was taken in 2009 after 2 years of work on his model train layout.

Model Train beginners who are complaining about how long it takes to plan a model train layout and get it finished… I just shake my head when I read them. It’s the “I want it now” mentality that ruins the enjoyment that could be had.

A model train layout is never finished… As Dave has demonstrated!

Enjoy the adventure… That’s why building a model train layout is such an amazing hobby. Look at the amount of fun Dave has had since about 2007.

Click the video and turn up your speakers and enjoy. And please comment below and share it with your friends and family…

Firstly, you will want to lay your tracks out onto your layout, to get a rough idea of the space you have to work with.

Secondly, you will need to find the specific track to which the power supply will be connected. Most train sets have a small plug or receptacle on their power supply track. This track is commonly referred to in most sets of instructions as the ‘feeder’ track.

Once you have found your feeder track, you will need to place it near to the closest electrical outlet. Then, connect your set’s tracks together and connect your feeder track to your power supply.

Now that your tracks are connected, you will need to place your locomotives and rail cars onto the tracks. Most train sets include a track called the ‘railer’ track, which looks like it has a ‘road crossing’ built into it. By carefully running your locomotives and cars across this piece of track, you will be able to get your equipment onto your model railroad’s tracks.

After you have gotten all of your locomotives and rail cars onto your tracks, you can connect your power supply to the electrical outlet. Then, slowly turn your power pack on until you see your locomotives begin to move. Make a note of the angle of your control stick as your locomotives begin to move, because this will be your train set’s ‘minimum throttle’ setting.

http://fossie09.hobbyshop.hop.clickbank.net/

By this time, you will have built your basic model railroad and will be ready to enjoy the fun of operating your model train. Make sure that you always keep safety in mind when you are running your trains. It is possible to derail a fast moving model train, and fast moving trains that derail can become fast flying trains that may hit innocent bystanders.

In conclusion, the tips mentioned above will help you to select a good quality train set, as well as help you to get your model train up and running. Remember that you should put as much detail into your railroad layout as you can, because without a good looking layout all train sets may as well be decorations for bookshelves.

Preserving some of the fond memories of railroad steam trains, road number 261 stands proud and ready to roll. This magnificent 4-8-4 Northern style locomotive and beautiful complimentary coal tender exude both the history of a unique railroad and pure steam power. Available in two road numbers, Lionel fully salutes the historical significance of this fan favorite. Forged of ALCo iron in 1944 with its 74 inch drivers, the 261 was a powerful presence in the Chicago and Minneapolis areas for more than a decade.

Along with one other Milwaukee Road S3, the 261 was saved from being scrapped in 1954. It has been beautifully restored and operates today as an excursion train for all to enjoy! Painstakingly painted and designed as tributes to the modern excursion train #261 and to the original Milwaukee Road #267, these highly respected heroes of the Midwest and Western lines are exquisitely proportioned and can now cruise right into your livery.
They see a train running around the track and often don’t really have an appreciation for how much time, work and skill has gone into the model railway layout. The building and crafting of the landscape and structures of a model railway layout can take many hours of careful work and a huge amount of patience.

There are some shortcuts like buying a kit for a building and then weathering it. But, the expert model railroaders will often scratchbuild the same building. This means they build it from scratch, from absolutely nothing. This gives a unique model train layout look. Just as a builder will build a real life house, the model railroader will build their model building.

For a beginner, this can be fascinating to watch and learn how they do this. Often these scratchbuilt buildings will only cost a few dollars for all the materials. The experienced model railroaders have learned over the years how to create amazing model railway layouts using materials that you would probably throw out.

http://fossie09.hobbyshop.hop.clickbank.net/

When you create your own structures, buildings and scenery it is important to remember the scale you are modeling in. A building that is too big or small for the scale of your model railway layout will stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. It also looks very amateurish and no amount of careful painting or weathering will disguise a structure that is out of scale.
bols. The major types that have been used in North America are
steam (now confined to museums, tourist lines, and the occasional
mainline excursion), diesel-electric (the standard of the industry),
and straight electric (always a tiny minority).

Steam locomotives burn coal, oil, or (in early days) wood in a
firebox attached to the boiler. Hot gases from the fire pass forward
through tubes called flues inside the boiler, which contains
water. The gases heat the water, turning it to steam. By
opening the throttle, the engineer admits steam to the
dry pipe, which takes it to the two valve chests (one
on each side). Moving back and forth according to the
engineer’s setting of the valve gear with the “reverse le-
ver,” the valves admit steam to the cylinders so the steam
can push the pistons as it expands. The piston rods are
linked to main rods, which are connected to side rods,
which are attached to the driving wheels. After the steam
has done its work, it exhausts through the smokebox and
out the smokestack, pulling the hot, smoky gases from
the flues with it in the familiar chuff-chuff cadence.

The major locomotive builders were Baldwin, Amer-
ican (Alco), Lima, and several railroads themselves.
Diesel-electric locomotives have a large diesel en-
gine, or prime mover, which turns an alternator or gen-
erator, which ultimately produces a D.C. electric output.
On a D.C. locomotive, that power is regulated and sent
to axle-mounted electric traction motors. On an A.C.
locomotive, a further step is required. An inverter takes
the D.C. output from the alternator and inverts it to
three-phase A.C., which in turn feeds the electric trac-
tion motors directly. A.C. has advantages because the
traction motors can be of simpler design and main-
tenance, as well as of lighter weight. Much of the
space inside a diesel locomotive’s long hood is oc-
cupied by auxiliary items such as radiators, blowers,
and dynamic brake equipment, as well as an air
compressor, and associated equipment.

http://fossie09.hobbyshop.hop.clickbank.net/

Diesel (and electric) wheel arrangements are
expressed in terms of axles, not wheels. “A” indi-
cates a single powered axle, “B” means two togeth-
er, “C” is three, etc. Non-powered axles are indi-
cated as numbers. A handful of old A1A-A1A units
remain, but virtually every locomotive today has all
axles powered and is either a B-B (two 2-axle trucks)
or C-C (two 3-axle trucks, as in the diagram).
Today’s major builders are Electro-Motive Diesel
and General Electric. Formerly, General Motors, Alco,
Baldwin, Fairbanks-Morse, and Lima also built them.
Electric locomotives generally draw current from a
third rail or overhead wires via roof-mounted panto-
graphs, modify it, and use it in their traction motors. They
share many advantages with diesels, but are not as flexible because
they can’t operate beyond their power supply.
Typical of modern power roaming the rails, a new Electro-Motive
Diesel 4,300-hp BNSF Railway SD70ACe leads a westbound coal

Welcome to Modelrailxpress.com

Hello my name’s Anthony Allam and I’m the managing editor of modelrailxpress.com

What makes us railway enthusiasts? Many varied experiences is my bet unless it’s hidden away in our genes. An example is given by Nick Pigott, editor of ‘The Railway Magazine’. He writes that his enthusiasm started when he was in his pram and saw a brand new ‘Britannia’ at Diss. I can’t recall what triggered my interest in model railways and wonder if you can recall what prompted yours?

Similarly what makes steam so special. I can’t fathom that out either. Is it the smell of smoke and oil mixed up in the steam? - As a child I used to smell my father’s suit when he came home from London and breathed in that wonderful steam train aroma.

Well, I hope you’re going to find that the end of this particular journey was worth waiting for as I’m announcing today the publication of ‘ModelRailXpress.com’, a monthly online model railway newsletter.

It’s going to take a similar format to the monthly printed magazine titles. However, rather than the usual lead time of many weeks before publication Modelrailxpress.com will bring you the latest news on a monthly basis and conceivably within hours of a news release!

There will be editorial comment, layout articles, features, product reviews, construction articles, hints and tips, subscribers’ letters, book reviews and trade news. We’ll also cover societies and clubs, events and meetings, and in due course a forum where subscribers can share their views and observations within the community. Future issues will include classified advertising, and a further aim is to have display advertising.

In order for ModelRailXpress.com to become successful we need your input. So, If you’ve got a layout you’d like featured, or you can write an article of interest to other enthusiasts or you can offer product and book reviews let me know. If you can offer tips and hints let me know too. Further, if you’ve built rolling stock, constructed buildings and scenery and would like an article published with photos - just let me know. Send me an email to info@modelrailxpress.com - and please note the spelling of ‘xpress’

There’s exclusivity here. This is not a free newsletter but a paid-for subscription site so distribution is restricted. All the content is exclusive just to you the subscriber. The price for ModelRailXpress.com is extremely competitive costing less than 9 pence per day -(overseas that’s less than 11cents). I want enthusiasts to be able to access the publication without breaking the bank.

Their appearance is frequently improved even more if they are repainted, but this is not always practical without some sort of airbrush for spraying. Airbrushes are not usually found in the toolboxes of modelers who have been in the hobby for a short time, and many of the aerosol cans put out too heavy a spray to do a fine finishing job. Brushing on plastic works, but is not always easy to do well. Stick to the flat overspray for now; you can always go back and repaint a building later. One thing, though, that can be done at any stage is weathering.

http://fossie09.hobbyshop.hop.clickbank.net/

I like to weather my buildings to age them. This brings them closer to the image that I see in the buildings around me. The world is hard on buildings and vehicles and seldom do you see a bright, shiny, building. Most show signs of the weather working on them, with some dirt and soot on some of the surfaces. Even new aluminum and galvanized metal oxidizes with a relatively flat surface sheen quite quickly. Rust, dirt and discoloration from the elements and environment can be simulated with a variety of paints applied in thinned-out washes. Flat water-based acrylics, like Polly S or the MRC/Tamiya paints, are especially useful. They do not have solvents that might attack plastic or the paint on the model, and the weathering effects can be washed or wiped off be fore the paint dries if it doesn't look good. Look at real buildings to get some ideas on where and how dirt and fading affect structures. Sometimes mud is splashed up and sometimes dirt is washed down. Soot tends to build up on smokestacks and over tunnel portals and enginehouse doors like a dusting. The thing to remember is to work most weathering vertically on walls, since that is how rain washes dirt. Just follow the prototype.

Thin washes are not the only method of aging a building, of course. Dry powder pigments and chalk dust (made by scraping artist's pastels with a knife) may be applied with a brush to models and are especially effective on structures, since they are not likely to be handled very much. Articles on weathering appear in the modeling magazines regularly and may be found by looking under 'Painting, lettering and weathering" in various magazine's annual index like the one in the N.M.R.A. Bulletin. One tip for using washes is in order: to break the surface tension and make the acrylic washes flow better, add a very small drop of liquid dish detergent to the water. And, don't forget to look at your equipment while your weathering supplies are out; locomotives and cars do get dirty!
Hopefully during this series what began as a train set is now well on its way to being a model railroad. Now we'll take a look at some of the things that help make those train models come alive, giving them something to do and a place to go. It is time to consider structures and scenery

Trains form only a small part of the world around us. A railroad is a narrow ribbon of twin steel running between cities, industries and yards. There is a countryside along that ribbon, one with rural land, small towns and medium and large cities that are linked by a transportation system, the railroad. This network is there to move goods and people. That is why the trains exist, and providing realistic scenery and buildings will help give them the appearance and purposes of real life.

http://fossie09.hobbyshop.hop.clickbank.net/

Like the prototypes, model structures come in many shapes and sizes and can be built out of greatly differing materials. There are all kinds of railroad buildings, like shacks and sheds, depots and towers, and engine and car shops and servicing buildings. There are farms, and in the towns and cities, homes and industries. The selection of buildings that can be used is limited only by one's imagination and how they fit in with the layout's theme.

The typical model railroader builds most of the structures on his layout from kits. There's good reason for this - the variety of structure kits available in HO (and N) is almost unbelievable. Look at a Walthers or Con-Cor catalog if you question this, then look at the shelves of your hobby shop. While the shops can't carry everything, what is there is likely to be impressive, and, if the kits aren't enough, wood, windows and parts are made for scratch building.

By far the most common material used in buildings is plastic. There are a great number of good plastic buildings on the market that can be built exactly as they come from the box and that make nice additions to a layout. If you wish to have something different, a little paint can do wonders to change the look of a straight-from-the-box kit. Leaving off some details, or changing, adding or moving others can be done, too, to create something that fits your layout, needs or tastes better. You can also combine parts of many kits or cut them up and use the pieces as raw material for making a building of your own design or to come close to a favorite prototype structure; the phrase 'kitbashing" is used to describe such modeling. The flexibility in building structures and scenery makes them really enjoyable modeling activities.

There are wood kits available, as well as kits molded in Hydrocal®, which is a hard plaster, cast polyester resin and cardstock. Kits with metal panels that need to be cemented with cyanoacrylate cement or soldered are made, and you can always build from scratch with the doors and windows and other details available in white metal and plastic. Extra doors and windows can be added to most kits easily and they can also be closed off by filling them in, just as you see on many older buildings near the tracks. What you use will be what you are most comfortable with. I've been using cardstock for a number of the structures I've built from scratch lately.

Time and patience we the keys to having a model come out the way you expect. I have a close friend who only uses plastic buildings. He's afraid he'll ruin other types of buildings. There is nothing wrong with this at all, and he has a railroad that looks good. He does have one kit that uses cardstock, wood and metal that is partially done. It looks good, but he may never finish it because he just doesn't like working with cardstock. The message is simple: work with materials that you like and don't think you have to scratchbuild everything. As an example, just about every issue of Railroad Model Craftsman, and many of the other modeling magazines, has an article about scratchbuilding or kitbashing some kind of structure. Most are quite manageable for modelers with just a little building experience; many are designed to be good first projects. Even if you are not intending to build the model that is the subject of the article, read it through to pick up new modeling techniques.

There is one kit line that I would like to mention, because many modelers might pass them up because they are metal and they might think they will be "too hard." Woodland Scenics makes small buildings, scenes and vehicles from white metal. (There are other companies with white metal kits for cars and trucks, too, like Walker, Lee Town, Ivers and Wheel Works, to name a few.) They make nice additions to any layout, so don't be afraid of them. You can use cyanoacrylate cement, which model railroaders sometimes call "ACC" (though almost no one else does! It's more commonly called 'Super Glue'), to assemble them. Vehicles add to the total effect of the scenery and structures; since they are such a normal part of what we see in real life, a layout looks odd without them, even though it might be hard to figure out why at first.
