Fireworks, Water Works, and Character Quirks

Stacy is bringing even more Veranda Beach vibes to the pod than usual since she’s recording from ON her veranda this week. With kids, their plus ones, and plus ones visiting for the July 4th holiday weekend, it’s hard to eek out quiet space. The good part is kids visiting, great weather and fun adventures to wineries and mini golf; the flipside is that even adult children want to be fed three meals EVERY day! Aside from that, VB is an awesome spot to celebrate the holiday in a lowkey, family fun, and classic way. Eric and “The GF” will celebrate after a nice waterfront meal with a primo spot to watch the fireworks over Tacoma. Meanwhile, Gertie will hide out at home. Eric has good news in the form of his car’s database working again and bad news in the form of a leak that after multiple trips to the water meter, Home Depot, and Lowe’s is not yet fixed. He’s hoping there’s only fireworks over the holiday, no waterworks because any glue he has at home has dried up (Eric definitely did not point fingers at the culprit). If any listeners out there have a solution for effectively closing glue (and food in general), let us know! Although Stacy’s daughter suggested she watch White Chicks for her CBS, Stacy watched the 1970 movie M*A*S*H instead. She watched and loved the TV show so decided to check out the movie. She enjoyed it and appreciated the coping with humor, satirical commentary it must have represented during the time of the Vietnam war. Eric watched Whatever Happened to Baby Jane after hearing Stacy’s take and was also riveted by the acting and actors that chewed up the screen and story. He and The GF also enjoyed Widow’s Bay, an Apple original that’s both spooky and funny. As for bar soap versus body wash, Stacy and Eric agree, everyone needs a little bit of soap, but perhaps it should be sold in bulk like oatmeal? Or bring back soap-on-a-rope! Deadly Women: Ginger Vitis, Mahjong Moms, and “The Bride”

Stacy is back in her happy place at Veranda Beach enjoying sunburn, social time, and solo watch parties tackling her Cultural Blind Spots. Eric rocked out with his band Battersea at The Valley in Tacoma last week; looking cool with his blue tint shades (is it less distracting or does he just enjoy the vibe?). Apparently, his missing tooth saga did not deter his singing although his Sonicare toothbrush DID deter his sleeping – the ghost of cavities past?! Should Stacy get a Waterpik flosser? Should she cover the bathroom (and herself) in plastic when using it? Eric has a simple solution. Also, is there a worse sound than a chirping low battery fire alarm? Summer has started to open its’ front door in Tacoma and is enjoying lazy days on Zero Gravity chairs not afraid of pitching over at all. As for her CBS, Stacy dove headfirst into the world of mahjong. Having only ever played with her mother-in-law, Stacy finds herself knee-deep in the rules, drama, and accessories that are American Mahjong. She also finally watched Napolean Dynamite and found it utterly delightful and would also like Pedro for President. For his CBS, Eric tried (and failed) to watch The General with Buster Keaton. While Buster may be a legendary silent film star known for his physical comedy, the movie goes South quickly. To cleanse the palate, Eric watched, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Classic Tarantino with great music and lots of violence; plan for snacks and bathroom breaks given its’ four plus hour run time. Stacy comes out swinging on their top topic this week boldly declaring her disdain for breakfast. Eric walks her back from the ledge pointing out it’s not the meal, it’s the foods she dislikes. Meanwhile, Eric tucks into a full Irish Breakfast enjoying every morsel of the blood sausage. Boy Apartments, Sunset Boulevard, and Hornblower

Stacy has been on the road a lot of late; first off to Cali to see her twenty-something son before going home to San Antonio for a quick trip. The visit with Charlie involved multiple trips to IKEA and a lot of resisting the urge to clean and organize. Two highlights were Stacy celebrating her 34th wedding anniversary with Pete and putting a foot in the ocean. Meanwhile Eric continues to have fun filling the gap in his mouth and is looking forward to pulling a Cindy Brady for his upcoming Battersea show at The Valley (June 20th) in Tacoma. Stacy’s CBS (cultural blind spot) was watching Sunset Boulevard which made her favorite skit from The Carol Burnett Show, make SO MUCH more sense. It’s a classic for a reason and the topic of our relationship between ego and mental health is still relevant today. Eric explored two sides of a coin, first watching Master and Commander of the Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe, followed by Kneecap, a movie about the Irish hip hop trio – yes, you read that correctly. He was a fan of both movies although hip hop as a genre still alludes him. What does the Good Housekeeping say about when to floss? What does Stacy’s hubby do? Will they stay married as a result? The True Crime of Birds, Smuggled Cola Bottle Candy and Brews

Stacy has descended a new rabbit hole that makes this episode even more exciting than usual; however, it’s a Cultural Blindspot so she’s forced to wait to share even though it’s become her LIFE. Speaking of holes, Eric continues to recover from his dental surgery with his tooth hole intact. He and “the Girlfriend” did something perhaps no one has ever done, they crashed into a bird enroute home from Veranda Beach – a traumatizing experience all around. On the same ride he realized his car’s data center wasn’t working thus begins “The early Morning Plight of the Chevy Blazer.” Other than Mexican food and avoiding grocery shopping Stacy’s highlight in banana Laffy Taffy (which leads to a conversation about the excellent candy selection at Dollarama in Canada. For their CBS (cultural blindspots), not to be confused with IBS, Stacy finally gets to discuss the cultural phenomenon that is the true crime documentary. From MacKenzie Shirilla to Elizabeth Smart with Moriah Wilson for good measure, Stacy is hooked! To redeem herself she watches What Ever Happened to Baby Jane which essentially had a fictional true crime plot with the iconic real-life rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It was a wild ride and like no other day at the beach! Perhaps inspired by his trip to Canada, Eric watched Strange Brew, a precursor to movies like Wayne’s World. To balance out the shenanigans he also watched GlenGarry Glen Ross which featured an A-list cast including our old pals Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon. He gave both movies two thumbs sideways. Did Eric and Stacy just become best friends?!? Eric, "The Girlfriend," and Gertie visit Stacy's cottage at the Veranda Beach Resort (the show's sponsor and Stacy's happy place) for Memorial Day weekend. A visit to Canada included A&W and their "teen" burger, poutine, and soda with real sugar naturally.

Eric also had his periodontal post op visit and for the next four months is ready to suck Jello shots through his teeth. They also discuss PlayDoh and Irish Stew which apparently is deemed Irish if made from lamb - a smell that triggers Gertie. Speaking of smells, coffee smells better than it tastes unless you're Eric. For their Cultural Blindspots, Stacy and Eric were together and watched two movies; Some Like it Hot and Marty Supreme. The first is a weirdly edgy romantic comedy from 1959 about two musicians that go under cover as female musicians to avoid the mob. One poses as a millionaire, and one is pursued by a millionaire. Marty Supreme is a surprise from the jump and keeps the same pace and energy as an elite table tennis match. It features some interesting casting and a surprising body count! Stacy and Eric liked both movies which surprised them both. As for their weekly topic, Stacy "Ketchup" Heller and Eric "Mustard" Reidar go toe-to-toe and the winner might be gravy. Snitches Get Stiches and Reality Bitches

Eric’s tooth extraction revealed a sinus infection and now he’s cosplaying as a prospector. To add insult to injury he pulled out his stiches out while practicing for Battersea’s upcoming show on June 20th at The Valley in Tacoma, WA. Like the good boyfriend he is, Eric waited too late to get “The Girlfriend” a birthday cake so perhaps we’ll have to celebrate when they come to Veranda Beach for the weekend. Stacy’s week includes a continuation of her dress quest and finds out she’s a yeasty girl (on her scalp) so as predicted by commercials from the 70’s dandruff is now a thing. What’s next quicksand? As for their Cultural Blindspots, Stacy goes back to the year The Gap opened (1969) and watched Midnight Cowboy. It wasn’t what she was expecting; however, she agrees it’s worthy of the AFI100 list. Eric finally watched Saturday Night Fever and found the disco music and dancing were the least offensive part for him, ultimately, he preferred Warriors. Hoping for a better outcome, he watched A Night at The Opera, the Marx Brothers classic. Sadly, he found it silly except for Harpo’s stellar harp playing. This week’s topic on the impact of reality TV was something Stacy and Eric could agree upon. While not judgement for consuming it, it does feel like there’s now generations of reality ick. Tone Loc, Billy Wilder, and Vices

Today’s show starts from the top addressing the topic of vices with Eric confessing to his weekly 12oz can of cider, such depraved morality. Whereas Stacy started drinking cocktails slowly but joined select social drinking especially once at her lake house. Stacy visited Austin this week while Eric once watched MTV’s Austin Stories. Stacy also waited almost two hours for Franklin’s Barbeque while Eric is still waiting for Arby’s to have the meats! One thing they both have in common is their wariness about roller coasters. While at Six Flags in Fiesta, Texas Stacy rode the Ferris wheel which is less impressive than Eric riding the Ferris wheel at the iconic Coney Island. As for Cultural Blindspots, Stacy continued her theme of movies involving apartments by watching, The Apartment. She was struck by the empathy and modernity of the movie. Eric watched two movies on both sides of the spectrum: Heat and Sky King. The first is a classic cops and robbers movie with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, while the second is a documentary about an airline ground agent who stole a plane from SeaTac and took the ride of his life. As for their topic of the week, unsurprisingly Stacy has far more foibles than Eric, he’s just socially awkward sometimes. Veranda Beach, Badges, and Tall Boys

Eric, TG (the girlfriend) and Gertie are finally (probably) going to visit Veranda Beach! It’s especially exciting since Veranda Beach is our new show sponsor; it’s easy to promote something you already love! What Stacy DOESN’T love is eye doctors that suggest blepharoplasty and dress shopping. Eric had been “dating” himself by going alone to concerts, including seeing The Wedding Present and Art Brut. While Stacy yucked it up, Eric found the Treasure of The Sierra Madre which is another movie on the AFI’s list of 100 American films to see. Bootys, Baby, and Date Night Ideas

Eric heard a song from the elusive “Booty Jamz” compilation while at the grocery store which reminds them of the revelation about what B stands for at HEB grocery stores. He also learned that DJ Casper and Mr. C are the same person – Willie Perry Jr. And speaking of dance, shout out to the Hungarian politician who danced like no one was dancing, it’s tough doing your own thing when dancing unless it’s a 15 second TikTok dance! Stacy attended Cornyation for San Antonio’s annual Fiesta which was almost as spicy as the bumper stickers Eric saw recently. For their Cultural Blindspots segment, Stacy shares that she saw Bringing Up Baby and Room. The first was an old classic screwball romcom while the second was a more recent true crime-like thriller, both were good. Meanwhile Eric watched Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho which was less good despite an almost shot for shot redo; the casting may be the issue. He also explored another Sam Raimi directed movie with a stacked cast, The Quick & The Dead which was awesome! As for “date night,” there was some debate on whether you still go on dates once you’re in a relationship, but Stacy and Eric can agree that it doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be fun. Weird Songs Sung Sundaes

Stacy starts the show more subdued than usual having just been to therapy before recording where she explored being “too much.” Don’t worry, her self-awareness quickly goes out the window. Now that her house in Washington has closed, she and her husband continue to explore their new environs like HEB (B for Butt!?). Talk of the two-step devolves into a conversation about quirky songs like the Casper Slide, Scatman, Cotton-Eyed Joe and Crazy Frog. Eric is brack at making tea brack, but cherries are too expensive in this economy! As for Cultural Blindspots, Stacy finished watching Song Sung Blue which was in fact very blue. She also saw Project Hail Mary which was NOT rocky at all! Eric watched Is This Thing On? which is a newer movie directed by Bradley Cooper. For a movie based on being a standup comic, it wasn’t very funny. He also started rewatching Malcolm in the Middle since the reboot is out soon and found it to be very funny. As for the perfect sundae, Eric argues it’s in a waffle cone with no toppings and Stacy loves the Almond Joy Sundae from COHO, an old Issaquah fave. They were split on banana splits. Dial M for Mother Mary

The highest of all (Catholic) Holy days happened (Easter) and now Stacy has hymns stuck in her head (you can really rock out to; Here I Am Lord). The conversation did yield new information about Eric; he did the readings at church which gave him the confidence to hone his talent for talk. In addition to hymns and ham, Stacy met “the boyfriend” (her daughter's new bf) and Eric went to the movies. The former went very well, and the latter included unfinished popcorn and heavy breathing which could be solved if seating assignments were more like the college roommate pairing process. After a quick convo about how Neveda makes us sick, it was time Cultural Blindspots. Stacy went high, Dial M for Murder and low, Real Housewives of Rhode Island and Below Deck while Eric went to the movies for his first EVER Ryan Gosling movie. He was a big fan of Project Hail Mary and shared his usual insightful commentary. If you’re looking for something else to watch on the small screen, consider St. Denis Medical; it’s got Office-like vibes and humor. Stacy shares the tale of getting her Texas license which involves the straight-out-of-central-casting Dept. of Public Safety in the town of Frederickburg. While Stacy’s husband was a wreck anticipating the process, Stacy eased in like a drawl and the process went down like sweet tea! What’s the difference between a Farmer’s Market and a Maker’s Market? Speaking of makers, Eric ventured to the new Maker’s Lab at the Tacoma Public Library to create a masterpiece of modern engineering; the process is ongoing and involves a free Hoover vacuum. Continuing to tick off items off their Cultural Blindspot Stacy watched Modern Times (Eric’s recommendation from last time) and Pulp Fiction. Eric watched something from the century, in fact from the most recent Oscar’s race, Begonia with Emma Stone. Once again opinions and thumbs up or down were shared. On the topic of Biggest Lie” it was determined that Stacy is the biggest liar (among other things) while Eric was once a fraud. The Modern Times of Buc-ee’s, Tea Brack, and K-Pop

Stacy isn’t the only one that lives far away, it turns out there’s DAMTT listeners all over the country (and world)! But how many of them have experienced Buc-ee’s? Stacy and her husband made the pilgrimage and as promised, it’s a lot, from “Beaver Chips” to brisket and bathing suits, Buc-ee’s delivers. Eric had a less in-your-face time celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with tea brack and colcannon. He also has FSA money to spend so let the loophole search on how to spend it best begin. Eric’s Cultural Blindspot of the week is on the AFI 100 list, Modern Times with Charlie Chaplin. It was a movie square on the fence between the silent era and “talkies” about finding and keeping a job in the face of modern times. Also starring Paulette Goddard, Eric was surprised to find he enjoyed it so much and saw the seeds of many comedy bits like I Love Lucy’s chocolate factory episode. Stacy watched KPop Demon Hunters which she was also surprised to enjoy since she’s not into K-pop or manufactured bands. Her takeaway was its good for children AND your inner child. As for nicknames, Ric-y Radio/E/Eric has none while Beans/Stacky/Fire Face/Stacy has plenty to go by and give! Dolly Parton, Boo Radley and Spilled Booze

Stacy is still getting adjusted to life in San Antonio with days mostly punctuated by sun, heat, deliveries, and service calls with folks like the grumpy clock guy. She’s also learning about life with hard water which Eric is surprisingly well-versed in. His update is less sunny as he found out he didn’t read the fine print about his gum graft surgery; like that there’s a part two!! It’s enough to make you wonder about the ROI on dental procedures. But in good news, Battersea played another great show even if Eric did spill his drink. Stacy and Eric both checked off Cultural Blindspots; Stacy watched 9 to 5 while Eric watched, To Kill a Mockingbird. Eric also watched Band of Brothers and Pacific which was awesome but brutal. The weekly topic was fantastic failure which made for hilarious and heartfelt conversation that taught us not to be phased by failure (which we all fail to do). Battersea, Birthdays, and Bad Coworkers

The band is back together, except not really since Stacy is finally in her new home in San Antonio. While Eric has been prepping for his latest Battersea gig at The Central Salon and adjusting to Daylight Savings, Stacy has been unpacking, learning the two-step at Stable Hall, and trying out local bars. At Otto’s Icehouse she ran into Spurs Jesus which was not a religious experience although Stacy and Eric had some thoughts on adding other biblical icons to make a sort of Peanuts-esque gang for SJ to hang with at games. As for Cultural Blindspots, Stacy finally watched Weapons on a recent flight and was semi-surprised by how much she liked it. Meanwhile Eric continues to overachieve by watching not one, but two movies; Key Largo, a Bogart and Becall movie with a film noir vibe and Tucker, The Man, The Car. While sharing it’s clear Stacy knows all the “hot goss” about dead Hollywood stars and nothing about cars. Eric shares his surprise that the Tucker movie was directed by famed Godfather director, Francis Ford Coppola since it seems more like what would be considered an “indie” these days. As for the week’s top topic, annoying coworker behaviors, Eric has more actual experience in a classic office setting, but Stacy has more thoughts. What does Eric do during the big game?” He goes shopping naturally. Stacy ignores the game, scrolls on her phone and grazes at snacks; clearly, they’re the sporty types. Does having access to two screens (phone and TV, laptop or tablet) diminish the primary experience you’re supposed to be present for? Is there a superior sense between hearing and seeing? Do you get more nuance from the former or the latter? Does Eric have undiagnosed ADHD? Are all kids with easy and early access to screens doomed to have it too? Should there be a component of driving tests where you have to text or root for a rogue binky? These are the compelling conversational tangents Stacy and Eric take this time on DAMTT. It’s the most festive time of year, unless you’re Stacy trying to find shiny red balls for your Christmas tree! While they’ve been elusive, tinsel isn’t and is currently tormenting Stacy’s grandcat much to Eric’s dismay (tinsel butt plug!). His favorite ornaments growing up doubled as cat toys. While Stacy stresses, Eric doesn’t sweat it since his tree typically goes up on Christmas Eve. He has been enjoying watching his neighbor’s “legs.” Stacy gave Eric a book on Easter Island, mistaking it for Stonehenge because of rocks, duh. Eric shares a health update on Gertie (donations welcome). Eric also shares that he was in a band with Roy Disney’s grandson before he gave up percussion for combustion. Dear Crabby makes a comeback asking for good gift ideas for adult children which Eric and Stacy share; from charity to Bop It, they share some real winners before sharing this week’s Cultural Blindspots. Eric rewatched the first two Knives Out movies before watching the third all starring the last James Bond, Daniel Craig. After missing a week due to sickness, Stacy and Eric are together again! Stacy is knee-deep in prepping her house for sale, which is making her way less enthused to decorate her house, while per tradition, Eric’s place is decorated, save for the tree which will go up eventually. The Showbox, Bond, Kolchak & Tranquility

This episode seems to mark the beginning of a busy season. Stacy went down a rabbit hole making decisions about what to get rid of (does it have value? Do the kids want it? Do I care?), she went to a show at The Showbox with Sir Mix-A-Lot and Macklemore along with a bunch of talented kids, saw “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t” and had all four kids come home for Thanksgiving! Eric shared a Gertie update, a story about the dermatologist and the latest on his various home projects. He also got a free turkey which reminds Stacy of the infamous WKRP Thanksgiving episode (worth looking up on YouTube). Eric replays part of the Cameo that Sir Mix-A-Lot did for Stacy before they start talking about their Cultural Blindspots of the week. For Eric, he continued with the Bond franchise watching the first one with Roger Moore, “Live and Let Die,” which may also be the best Bond song ever (sung by Paul McCartney and Wings. Eric goes into some of the ridiculous details (remember the guy from the 7Up ads and Jane Seymour?) but also admits it was a fun watch! Stacy doesn’t check off any blindspots this week but does talk about the infamous niche that is Hallmark-type Holiday rom coms. This naturally somehow leads to “Die Hard”, “A Christmas Story” and the leg lamp and “The Night Strangler” movie based in Seattle with the father from “A Christmas Story” playing Kolchak. Unsurprisingly there’s a tangent about the merch from some of these movies that have become iconic – who doesn’t want a leg lamp or moose eggnog glasses!?! As for the Weekly Topic, Stacy picks a classic Billy Joel song that tells a story, switches tempo and last over seven minutes long while Eric goes for his usual esoteric vibes and chooses a song called “Sea of Tranquility” from the Wild Swans albus, Spaceflower. He likes the repetitive bass line and hypnotic groove along with the over ten-minute length! Eric noted one big difference in the choices was the choice to engage versus disengage. Stacy suggests a John Mulhaney bit called, “The Salt & Pepper Diner” about the hilarious consequences of playing a song on repeat. Eric had a great birthday with lots of cake. Meanwhile Stacy has been rowing to build strength a la Hanz & Franz from SNL in the late 80’s. Supposedly there was going to be a movie with Arnold Schwartzenager, but he was too busy to make it happen – Eric said they did a read-through on Conan O’Brian and it was funny! Birthday goodness. Gertie is also dealing with lame healthcare processes and isn’t even cheering up for green beans! Eric dislodges a core childhood memory for Stacy when he says the phrase, “Chicken & Rice,” while he recalls the Saturday morning jingle about beans and rice. Somehow this leads to fond memories of port wine spread (Eric found a Merlot cheese spread) and an offer to share a recipe for a pinecone cheese “ball.” In other news, Eric’s band Battersea had a gig with a small but enthusiastic crowd. Follow them for future show details. As for Cultural Blindspots, we’re kind of contrarians, we didn’t watch what we supposed WHEN we were supposed to so now, we’re making up for lost time. Stacy watched “The Princess Bride,” which is considered a comedy classic while Eric watched “Starship Troopers,” which might be a considered a cult classic/satire. He also recommends some other shows and movies he’s been watching that are (surprisingly) good. Their weekly topic about straws leads to a brilliant idea involving Starbucks, old bank tubes and saving the world. Birthday, Boogers, and Blindspots

It’s Eric’s birthday along with the Earl of Sandwich and Steve Zayn. Stacy fetes the big day with Nothing Bundt Cakes and kind words; after all, it is World Kindness Day! The latest for Eric is his almost complete deck, the newly installed solar panels, and his (and Gertie’s) medical checkup. Ironically both father and (dog) daughter have high cholesterol for which one of them takes a pill the size of a grain of rice. Eric is healthy otherwise, but Gertie might need a little extra help. Although Eric does need periodontal surgery and in sharing his pre-appointment, he tells the story of how the assistant unceremoniously told him about a booger. He about died from embarrassment. Meanwhile Stacy may have given some rando guy her fries today assuming he is unhoused cringe or kind? For their Cultural Blindspots, both Stacy and Eric watched movies set in November which is rare. Stacy watched “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” while Eric revisited the “Back to The Future” trilogy the first of which is celebrating its’ 40th Anniversary! Eric also recommended the “Death by Lightening” series about James Garfield; arguably a period in history that is also a blind spot. The episode ends with the common theoretical question, “What 3 things would we take on a deserted island?” Clearly Eric is more hopeful with his choices, Stacy’s eating chicken. DAMTT’s European Vacation

The gang is back together again, although not in studio so the sound may be different in this episode. Eric is just back from his European vacation and Stacy is on the eve of leaving for her trip to Italy. For the first half of the show, Stacy peppers Eric with questions about his trip – “the roses” or highlights and “the thorns” or struggles. Unsurprisingly the biggest thorn was the stress of wondering whether the apartment Eric booked in Paris would let him in as he had no communication prior to his arrival. While it all worked out in the end (thanks to the ‘Frenchies,” the process was a thorn in Eric’s side. However, the roses were in full bloom as he and the girlfriend got to visit some new and old favorite places. Eric also got to see some of his all-time favorite bands/musicians while traveling – from the Woodentops and Noel Burke to Edwyn Collins (on his farewell tour) and The Divine Comedy. For the second half of the show, Eric and Stacy shared that they both checked off another Cultural Blindspot; for Eric, The Fugitive and for Stacy, Citizen Kane. They agreed the former was enjoyable if farfetched while the latter was “meh” making its’ reputation as one of the greatest films made all that much more perplexing.
