Hobart remains one of our favorite destinations in Australia and we’ve still got fond memories of the famous Salamanca Market and kayaking on the Derwent River.

Given our love for Salamanca Place we were delighted to find out our accommodation for the night was at the recently opened Salamanca Wharf Hotel, which is described as a “contemporary self-contained boutique apartment hotel”.

We arrived after reception hours but the friendly staff gave us a call before they closed with instructions on how to access our room keys.

The Room

We were staying in one of the Premium Apartments that offered a separate bedroom and all the facilities we could possibly ask for. After walking into the apartment, Amy’s first response was “I could live here quite easily!”.

There was plenty of natural light coming through the apartment and the bathroom was very modern with MOR toiletries, a nice touch.

Also the massive king sized bed was extremely comfortable, it was like sleeping on a cloud!

We really couldn’t ask for much more but just to complete the offering, hotel guests here had complimentary wi-fi.

Well played, Salamanca Wharf Hotel. Well played.

The Location

As we said earlier, Salamanca Place is an awesome spot and the Salamanca Wharf Hotel was a short walk to some of Hobart’s top bars and restaurants.

We were starving and had the thought of fish and chips on our mind. We headed to the waterfront and Fish Frenzy, a restaurant famous for its delicious, fresh fish and chips and they didn’t disappoint us – the thought of it right now still makes our mouths water.

Castray Esplanade Food + Wine

We usually wouldn’t rave about toasted sandwiches, but our breakfast at the in-house restaurant included the best toasted sandwich ever!

That’s a pretty big call when comparing it to Dunedin Cheese Rolls and some of the sandwiches we had in the United States but it’s a statement we’re sticking to. The Berkshire ham and aged cheddar in local Pigeon Hole bread with tomato chutney on the side was absolutely delicious! The coffee was beautiful too.

When we come back to Hobart, we’ll definitely be staying at the Salamanca Wharf Hotel again. That’s a non-negotiable.

After a hearty breakfast at Banjo’s Bakery Cafe in Strahan, the two of us boarded the Lady Jane Franklin II and headed up the stairs to the Captain’s Premier Upper Deck. This was the definition of cruising in luxury – leather seating, a private viewing deck and a dedicated guide.

We were that relaxed and comfortable in our seats, it was a challenge to stay awake! But fortunately there was plenty to see as we headed through Macquarie Harbour to Hells Gates and onto the Gordon River.

The water here looks like Coca Cola, tannin-stained from the wood in the area.

Guests were treated to complimentary beverages and a tasty Tasmanian Cheese Platter with Leatherwood honey before the time came to disembark the vessel for the first time at Heritage Landing.

This ancient cool temperature rainforest is as close to nature as you can possibly get as passengers strolled along the boardwalk positioned above the forest floor.

There were trees here that were over 2000 years old and the Tasmanian Wilderness was named a UNESCO World Heritage Area in 1982, satisfying 7 out of the 10 criteria. Amazingly, Heritage Landing receives between three to six meters of rain per year.

As we stepped back onto the boat, the buffet lunch was ready to dig into with many different cuts of meats (including smoked wallaby!), a warm lamb stew and plenty of sides to go along with it.

It was then time for our next stop at Sarah Island, a former penal colony that operated between 1822 and 1833 that had a reputation as one of the harshest settlements in Australia at the time.

At first glance it looked like a beautiful island with brilliant views over the Harbour…

But as our guide showed us around and told us the stories from the settlement years, it quickly became evident that this was a place that you wouldn’t want to have been at the time. In fact, many would go on to describe it as “Hell on Earth”.

This guided tour was one of the highlights of the cruise and as we boarded the ship for the return to Strahan, we came to the conclusion that this would have to be one of the best day trips in Tasmania when the weather is nice.

Although a Gordon River Cruise is probably suited more towards an older demographic than the two of us, if you’re on Tasmania’s West Coast it’s well worth a look.

If you haven’t yet, we’ve embedded it below because we definitely don’t need an excuse to watch it for the hundredth time!

Anyway after seeing that commercial, it took us back to our time in St. Louis in 2011 and memories of our Anheuser-Busch brewery tour, home of Budweiser and the Budweiser Clydesdales.

We then started looking through the other 140 or so photos we took during our time in St. Louis, the first time we’ve viewed them since we visited! And even though it wasn’t our favorite city in the world, the great memories we had there started flooding back.

Like the time we were taken to our hotel in a limo instead of a regular taxi…

Or that time we took a tiny little capsule to the top of the famous Gateway Arch…

Then there was our first ever professional ice hockey experience…

And finally, what about the delicious barbecue feast we enjoyed at Pappys Smokehouse or a serving of the classic St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake?

Just by looking at this photo, our mouths started watering and it was like we were eating it all over again and savoring every bite.

It’s amazing how a few photos can suddenly trigger the most intense of feelings.

Take 10 minutes this weekend to go through some of your old travel photos – they’re sure to bring a smile to your face!

And if you don’t have time to do that, scroll back up and watch the Budweiser commercial again. That will do the trick!

After our car received a jumpstart from the kind staff at Cradle Mountain Chateau, we were on the road again. The destination for our second night in Tasmania was the West Coast of Tasmania, specifically the town of Strahan (pronounced “straw-n”).

Strahan is one destination in Tasmania that we hadn’t been to yet and we were excited to visit this quaint historic fishing village that provides a variety of unique holiday accommodation, including beautifully appointed waterfront cottages and terraces.

We arrived in Strahan at lunchtime and took a quick walk around the lovely little town.

The Town

Pretty place, isn’t it? We grabbed a quick bite to eat at Banjo’s Bakehouse before it was off to our accommodation for the night.

The Room

We were spending the night in a Hilltop Standard Room at Strahan Village, a very spacious room with a split accommodation and lounge area.

The View

The sweeping views overlooking Macquarie Harbour from our private deck were beautiful and sitting out here was very relaxing.

If it was a sunnier day and a little bit warmer, we would’ve spent a lot of time out here!

The Restaurant

The definite highlight of our stay at Strahan Village was dinner at the View 42° restaurant, set on the hilltop overlooking the beautiful village and harbour.

Our treat was a Tasmanian Gourmet Buffet featuring some of the finest local cuisine including soups, cold selections, hot selections, desserts and a variety of dishes on ice.

It’s impossible to say what our favorite dish was – though we did our best to try as many of them as possible. The prime Tasmanian roast of the day was delicious, as was the garlic and rosemary cream potato bake.

Our biggest complaint about Strahan Village was the cost of internet – $5 for an hour or $15 for 24 hours. We outright refuse to pay for internet at hotels simply on principle but this was very disappointing when all we wanted to do was update you about the lovely spot we were in.

On a short stretch of road in the heart of Tasmania’s dairy and cropping region we discovered five businesses offering a range of products from cheese to chocolate to fresh fruit and even cider!

If you’re planning a Tasmanian road trip, these are all worth a quick visit.

Ashgrove Cheese Shop

6173 Bass Highway, Elizabeth Town
www.ashgrovecheese.com.au

The Ashgrove Cheese Shop offers a true Tasmanian gourmet food experience with information, tastings, gourmet food, wine, beer and a licensed café.

We made a brief stop here and tried the various award-winning cheeses they had on offer, most of them delicious. Our favourite was the Ashgrove Bush Pepper, a cheese infused with native pepper berries to create a spicy flavour… yum!

Also don’t miss the brightly painted life-size statues of cows at Ashgrove, these were very cool. You might be able to spot one or two of them in the photo above!

Anvers Chocolate Factory

9025 Bass Highway, Latrobe
www.anvers-chocolate.com.au

The “House of Anvers” is a real chocolate taste sensation. Anvers has viewing windows installed for visitors to see the factory in action.

Unfortunately the factory wasn’t in operation when we visited so we headed straight for the Chocolate Tasting Centre to see what free samples they had on offer. We were delighted to discover there were many – chocolate fudge, butterscotch fudge, cappuccino fudge and even some hazelnut truffles.

Cheese first and now chocolate, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm & Café

9 Christmas Hills Rd, Elizabeth Town
www.raspberryfarmcafe.com

Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm café is open 7 days per week all year from 7am to 5pm, and they sell raspberries and raspberry products from their shop during the raspberry season from mid December to Mother’s Day in May.

We had a delicious breakfast here where most things on the menu had a raspberry flavour. Amy enjoyed the Sweet Potato & Potato Hash Brown Waffles while Kieron demolished the Morning Spirit which consisted of poached eggs, tomato, mushrooms and wilted spinach drizzled with raspberry hollandaise.

There was also a Raspberry Chocolate French Toast on the menu – one that we’ll save for next time we visit Tasmania!

We can highly recommend the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm café as your first stop for breakfast and coffee after leaving the Spirit of Tasmania.

Spreyton Cider Co

6 Melrose Road, Spreyton
www.spreytonciderco.com.au

Spreyton Cider Co is the latest venture from Spreyton Fresh, the home of the finest Fresh Apple Juice since 1998. Spreyton ciders are made from 100% Tasmanian apples and pears, with the majority grown on their own orchards in the picturesque Mersey Valley.

Spreyton Cider Co was one stop we were especially looking forward to. Some of the best apple juice in the world comes from Tassie so we couldn’t wait to see what the ciders were like.

We loved having the opportunity to try the five different cider varieties – Kieron’s favourite was the Vintage, the driest cider on offer. Amy loved the Classic which was in between sweet and dry, made of pink lady apples and sundowner apples.

Both of these ciders won bronze at Melbourne Fine Food Awards and the Australian Cider Awards – give them a try if you can find them!

The Cherry Shed

243 Gilbert St, Latrobe
www.thecherryshed.com.au

Every product sold in The Cherry Shed is produced from their own fruit and is processed on site, products include fresh cherries, cherry ice-cream, port, liqueur, wines, jam, pickles, chutney, relish, sauces and much more.

We didn’t try any of the products at The Cherry Shed as it wasn’t quite cherry season but from what we saw here, it’s a safe bet to say that they would be fantastic.

Tasmanian cherries are known as some of the best in the world so it’s another thing we’ll add to our to-do list for next time – visit during cherry season (mid-December to late February) and enjoy some of these tasty treats!

Our plan for Cradle Mountain was to take on the 6km Dove Lake Circuit, one of the premier walks in Tasmania. But before we could embark on our walk, we first needed to check into our accommodation at the Cradle Mountain Chateau.

The Room

We were staying in a Standard Room at the Cradle Mountain Chateau and they instantly ticked off one of the items from our perfect hotel room – a welcome gift of Tasmanian wine, crackers, cheese and grapes. Lovely!

There was also a large comfortable queen bed and a nice touch to the room was the artwork on the walls that was available for purchase if it took your fancy.

The View

The room also featured our own private balcony with woodland views. Unfortunately our planned Dove Lake Walk had to be cancelled as our arrival to Cradle Mountain coincided with snow. Yes, you read right.. snow!

So instead of being able to get close to nature and the thriving wildlife of Cradle Mountain, we were stuck indoors for the remainder of the day. It was even too cold outside for the animals to come out and forage so there wasn’t much to watch from our window either!

Fortunately the Cradle Mountain Chateau was home to The Wilderness Gallery which featured some amazing nature photography including an exhibition of photos from our beloved Iceland by Joshua Holko.

We spent just over an hour here and at the Tasmanian Tiger Exhibition before heading back to the room to prepare ourselves for dinner.

The Food

Dinner was at the Grey Gum Restaurant, conveniently located within the Cradle Mountain Chateau. Our meal started with complimentary bread and dips followed by mains of macadamia-crusted chicken kiev and eye fillet, fresh from Tasmania.

As you can see from the photo, the kitchen staff at the Grey Gum Restaurant immaculately presented these meals and with a side of parmesan fries to share, there was no way we were leaving here unsatisfied.

The Extras

Upon checkout, we were horrified to discover that our car battery had died. Being in a remote location, the two of us became concerned that our road trip plans would be thrown into disarray.

Fortunately we notified reception of our predicament and within minutes one of the staff was out at our vehicle with jumper cables to save the day and get us back on the road! Huge props to Cradle Mountain Chateau for the quick rescue!

Generally when people travel to Tasmania from mainland Australia, they fly. It’s the most direct way from Point A to Point B and although the airport experience isn’t always the best, it tends to offer little in terms of unexpected surprises.

Recently we made our way south to the Apple Isle using a completely different mode of transport – on board the Spirit of Tasmania, a ferry that sails between our hometown of Melbourne and Devonport, a town in the north of Tasmania.

And let us tell you – compared to flying, our journey was full of surprises!

Departure

The ship departs Melbourne each night at 7:30PM so we arrived at Station Pier 90 minutes beforehand in our car that was packed full of luggage.

We joined the back of the queue as cars slowly made their way onto the ship.

The best part was that we didn’t need to leave the comfort of our vehicle the entire time, going through a check-in booth where we were handed our boarding passes, ship directory and cabin keys. The next time our feet would step out of the car, we were on-board the Spirit of Tasmania.

On-Board

After locking our car and dropping our overnight bags in our cabin, we headed to the main area of the ship so that we could experience the boat setting sail.

We grabbed ourselves a refreshing drink from the main bar and stepped outside where we were treated to some fantastic views of Melbourne’s city skyline.

If you take the Spirit of Tasmania journey, don’t miss this view!

Before we headed off for our dinner, we took a few minutes to explore the on-board facilities on the Spirit. We grabbed some brochures from Tourism On Board to get some ideas for next couple of days in Tasmania, picked up supplies from the gift shop and popped our heads into the cinema on the ship.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to stay for the movie, some tasty food was calling our name and the two of us were starving!

Meal

Our meal at the Leatherwood Restaurant was one of the highlights of our experience – a three course meal with some delicious Tasmanian produce served up by a lovely wait staff in the restaurant.

We started with a Tasmanian tasting plate, followed up by separate mains of Nichols chicken breast and a tenderloin of beef. Then how could we say no to a House of Anvers tasting plate of supreme chocolates and fudge!

Sleep

After dinner we headed straight for our room as the two of us were exhausted and wanted to get as much rest as we could before the following day.

To be honest were a little worried about the sleeping situation – our cabin was cosy which wasn’t an issue but it was more the fear of sea sickness that had us concerned.

One of the biggest surprises was that we slept through the entire night and were only awoken by the announcement over the PA system that we had arrived in Tasmania. A good night’s sleep!

Arrival

We quickly got ready and made sure to got a quick snap in front of the city of Devonport.

Overall, our Spirit of Tasmania experience exceeded all expectations – we got to enjoy a tasty meal, had a good night’s sleep and had arrived with our own car ready to check out a fantastic destination.

Now, it was time to explore Tasmania!

Harare is the capital city of Zimbabwe and is translated in the local Shona language as “one who doesn’t sleep”. While we’ve been to busier cities around the world, when you get out to the Mbare area it suddenly becomes very hectic.

Our first stop was a street corner in Mbare. Others on our bus had heard of some amazing street art painted onto the sides of buildings and were desperate to get some photos of them. The retro fence signs nearby were cool enough themselves!

With that said, the detail of the paintings on the side of this building was incredible and so vibrant. Seriously impressive!

It was then off to Mbare Market, the largest market in Harare for traditional artwork with collections of Shona sculptures, wooden crafts and basketry. The shopkeepers here were very friendly without being overly pushy.

There was a large range of products at the covered market at Mbare and if it wasn’t so early in our trip, we probably would’ve stocked up on a lot. Things here are a lot cheaper than you’d find in touristy parts of the country such as Victoria Falls.

While the products were nice, it was the smiling faces that touched us the most. Despite not having much, everybody here seemed so happy and welcomed us for quick chats and to take photos of them and their products.

And the children were just adorable!

We were fascinated by how all of the women carried around their infants in baby slings made of cloth.

As the bus left Mbare, we were lucky enough to see one more impressive display of Harare street art. Not the best photo but you can still a good idea of what it looked like.

This was our first real taste of Africa. And we were in love!

Our first stop in Zimbabwe was the capital city of Harare for the 6th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel and Tourism Africa Fair.

Many key African tourism operators were in attendance but the biggest thing that set this exhibition apart from other travel shows we’ve attended was the opportunity to connect with small local Zimbabwean exhibitors.

We spoke with many of them over the three days of Sanganai but one of the stories that stood out came from Elias Mahunye of Legoh Arts, a community based project which gives skills to the less privileged in Zimbabwe.

Elias’ father died when he was three years old and he grew up in the care of his mother. As a child he was forced to sell cigarettes and potatoes to survive before deciding to go onto the streets of Harare to wash cars in an effort to support his family.

After doing this for several years, Elias met an Englishman named Ernie Sinclair in 2002 who said to him “I want to turn you into somebody. I can see that you’ve got potential, you just have to believe in yourself.”.

It was that conversation that prompted Elias to leave the streets and make an effort to change his life, departing Harare to undergo artist training under Sinclair’s watchful eye. This training is what led Elias to start believing.

His first achievement as an artist was to create unique cards (above) made from recycled materials such as bond paper found on the streets. Elias was the one who introduced these type of cards to Zimbabwe and it was this invention that allowed him to start working with street children in 2004.

The children he works with are often AIDS orphans who are on the streets as a result of their parents passing away. Others come from poor families in the ghetto and have left school in search of money to support themselves and their loved ones.

These children have no support or guidance and although Elias is no longer a street kid, he says that he will always represent them.

His message to them is simple: “We give you the skills so you start from there and make a better life”.

Elias currently has 10 kids at his workshop in Mbare who are there each and every day. The money he makes from the cards goes back to their development.

Sometimes he gives them the money directly for living essentials but often he instead chooses to help them further their education. “It pains me to see someone not going to school because it is a situation I faced before”, Elias tells us. “I’m also paying for two guys housing. $10 in Epworth. There are some rooms there. They have no electricity but the houses are cheap”.

His desire to change the lives of the less fortunate is admirable and Elias is approaching 10 years of working with the street children of Harare.

I just give praise to the Lord who keeps on telling me that you (will) reach your destiny. It might be long but never mind, that is why I am still going.

The biggest challenge faced by Elias is the marketing of his products and selling enough of them to actually make a difference. Zimbabwe Youth in Tourism is playing an active role in assisting him with this but unfortunately the market is still not big enough to achieve the results Elias desires.

We’re hoping that by sharing his story, it will bring some attention to the cause Elias Mahunye is fighting so strongly for – the hope and future of street kids in Harare.

Don’t Ever Look Back is built around the theme of affordable luxury and although we’re always looking for ways to save money on our travels, we’re not budget travelers.

We travel with suitcases over backpacks. We prefer to stay in boutique hotels over hostel dorms. We would much rather pay to eat a delicious quality meal than choose processed tinned food or ramen noodles just to save a few dollars. You get the point.

So when we found out we were to spend a night under the stars at the picturesque Gunlom Falls, we knew that this would put us well outside of our comfort zone.

Kieron hadn’t been camping since he was in school and for Amy, this was her first ever proper camping experience.

The two of us wouldn’t have the luxury of tents – we were going to be sleeping in swags, a portable sleeping unit used primarily in the Australian bush before motor transport was common. Our only protection from the outdoors was a mosquito dome!

The two of us had an enjoyable day, relaxing in the pools at the base of Gunlom Falls which is one of the best swimming spots in all of Kakadu National Park.

As the sun set, our Adventure Tours guide Richard prepared a delicious meal of lamb stew and freshly baked bread over the campfire. We shared in good conversations with the rest of the group before saying goodnight and getting into our swags.

We made ourselves comfortable and looked up at the full moon and the stars above.

This wasn’t so bad – our only complaints were that we were a little cramped in our mosquito dome and that the heat was still a factor but apart from that, we didn’t mind this whole bush camping thing as we drifted off to sleep.

Look out for snakes!

Richard told us earlier in the day to make sure we wore shoes at all times and tread carefully, particularly at night when snakes are most active due to the hot weather. Did you know Australia has 20 of the top 25 most venomous snakes in the world? Scary!

We woke up in the middle of the night with the need to go to the bathroom – approximately a 2-minute walk from our campsite. Despite our best efforts to get back to sleep, the urge to pee became too strong so we put on our shoes and stepped outside of the swags.

Rustling in the bushes!

Very slowly we walked to the bathroom, taking each step with caution. Kieron shone the flashlight firmly on the path ahead and we were approximately halfway to relief when we heard some movement in the bushes ahead of us.

“Oh shit!”, Amy said. We stopped dead in our tracks – could it possibly be a snake?! Or perhaps it was a dingo, a creature that one of our tour group had seen earlier in the day. We had come too far to go back and fear of the unknown had paralysed us.

Cautiously we lifted the torch up to see what was in our way..

The shadow looked something like this – except it was darker and there were more of them!

There were several large shadows standing directly on the path to the bathroom and they definitely weren’t moving based on our presence. It seemed like the only way to go was through them and there was no chance in hell of us doing that!

We were already terrified when suddenly we hear the sound of loud, heavy footsteps on the dirt..

*KLOPP, KLOPP, KLOPP, KLOPP, KLOPP!*

These things were coming in our direction and fast!

Kieron ducked behind a tree while Amy was long gone back towards the campsite..

When the shadows finally emerged from the darkness, they were mere meters away from us and what they were became evident.

Not actual photo. Photo used for dramatic purposes!

6 huge brumbies! These wild bush horses stormed past us at quite the speed and in a flash, they had disappeared into the distant bushes.

In the silence of the night, we’re pretty sure the sound of our thumping heartbeats could have woken up the entire campsite!

The Aftermath

Fearing that perhaps this was a trap and there was still a few brumbies waiting to attack us, we decided to enhance our bush experience by using nature as our bathroom.

Once finished, we quickly rushed back to the campsite and secured ourselves in our mosquito dome.

For the rest of the night, all we could hear these large horses rustling in the bushes right near where our swags were located. “Just leave us alone!” was all we could think to ourselves.

It took a while before we were able to get back to sleep but eventually we did and the next thing we knew the sun was starting to rise. Phew!

We had survived our first bush camping experience!
