Gotta stay on it tho cause you gotta keep it moving at the end of the day... since the beginning of this year there's been an onslaught of big releases, and one you definitely shouldn't miss is the Tryna Test EP from the Gangoon Dubz camp....this Crew is not new to the DontSleep blog... as we've repped them for a minute now... their high-energy tracks are something I always reach for when mixing...its something that people can immediately vibe to. definite dancefloor pleasers..

Tryna Test features multiple collaborations from within the Gangoon Dubz camp... the title track "Tryna Test" links producers Dismantle and Hizzle Guy with wonderous results... the vocal stabs combined with 808 bass hits and staccato - samplings, give a feel of an almost re-envisioned form of hip hop... I'd say this track definitely manages to straddle mulitple genres, while creating something new at the same time... Big tune. Following up next is "I Don't Care" which rides in with vocal treatment from Felix Joseph... with production detail falling between Gangoon producers, Hizzle Guy and Rudi Redz ... and I'm sure you know by now, I like Dubstep with vocals... and this a tough tune indeed. Wowi.. up next is a monster of a tune from Dismantle.. "Kill Dem Sub" - is a percusive number thats sure to put a smile on a soundbwoys face... pure rewind bizness. Closing out the EP is a sure fire banger produced by Hurley entitled..."Ending The Game" - a wicked close out to a dope EP...

If I'm not mistaken this is exclusive to Beatport... so thats where you need to head to cop it... And to all the U.S. heads, I believe Hizzle Guy will be coming to the states later in the year... so definitely look out for that!! There are a few strongholds (Halcyon, Deadly Dragon) and collector havens (Good Records) but for the most part, if you want to get your hands on something specific online distributors are the way to go. This creates something of a puzzle for fans of UK bass musics (Dubstep, Funky, Grime etc.) situated outside of the UK, since an impulse-buy of a "Friday Shipping" new release will often result in receiving your vinyl round about the time the release has hit digital shops. This is by no means standard practice. Many labels now release on digital and vinyl simultaneously. Mysteries of distribution aside, buying vinyl is a choice to invest in an object. It will not crash or become corrupt (well, there are ways to corrupt your vinyl ..) and it can be resold without getting you arrested.

For the label/musician, vinyl is a slightly different kind of investment/strategy. Especially, if your release is vinyl only. Which brings me, finally, to the self-published gem of No Symbols 001. The premier release from Sheffield producer Beneath, NOSY001 is a four track EP of intensely bass-heavy UK Funky. The tracks are stripped down (were they ever built-up?) to a kind of dubbed-out essence, patiently constructed out of echoing pads, efficient drum patterns and the aforementioned foundation-crumbling sub-bass. Mid-range synth does figure here and there but it is hardly the focus of these tracks. To get a sense of this producer's potential you should download this guest mix from Blackdown's blog, which is how I know that any of this stuff exists in the first place. While it's downloading you can also have a listen to another mix which pairs the four tracks on the EP with a choice selection of funky riddims and gospel house(!). The track list can be found here.

I could go more in depth on each of the tracks on the release, but Manchester distro Boomkat has already done a bang-up job of compressing that description into a single, dense insider-speak paragraph. The consensus seems to be that Beneath's work is a throwback to the minimal aesthetic of an earlier era of mid-noughts Dubstep. While I recognize the urge to constantly frame the sounds of the present in relation to the past, I prefer to say that these sounds are part of a new direction in the existing landscape of British underground dance music - something beyond the genre-hybridizing of 2010 into 2011. If there is a tie in this EP to a time when Dubstep was being propagated by a handful of labels, it is in the so-called "outsider" nature of it's marketing strategy, which exploits the allure of the unknowable in an age of the information obsessed. I point this out not to undermine its effectiveness, but rather to show that it is a choice to avoid the double-bind of internet hype. A decision worth respecting since it is mirrored in the well-crafted nature of the sounds themselves. If you are in for the long haul, buy this record. It's the difference between hype and history.

DISTANCE - "Reboot /Bazurk" TECTONIC -054

back on dis ting for real... hope everyone's havin a good new year so far. lots... and lots of big releases set to drop in the very near future... definitely keep it locked here and we'll do our best to keep you informed.... were also gonna have something special lined up here very soon, so you won't wanna miss that... and if you haven't yet.. you can add us on Facebook and follow us on twitter as well....

this is a special one for me... Distance, as far as I'm concerned is definitely one of those artists that should always be mentioned when you talk about Dubstep... his beats have a certain rawness to them that you never forget... raw like in a hip hop sense... like how DJ Premier is raw in Hip Hop... Distance is raw in Dubstep -if you can follow me on that... I've definitely dropped quite a few of his tracks when I play out... his Chestplate imprint is a label that I have a lot of respect for... if you made me pick my favorite track by him up until now, it might have to be "Misfit"... cause its just a mean ass track... rugged.... but lets not leave out "Falling" which came out on Universal (Island Records) not too long ago... big moves...

With this release Distance definitely goes in hard... "Reboot" starts things off...
- I love the synth sound and flow on this... def not your carbon copy lfo line here... it has character, so to speak. this track has def been makin the rounds, and I think the first time I heard it was on an N-Type mix... "Bazurk" on the flip, swings into action with a melody that feels like its constantly lurking over your shoulder, winding from corner to corner... the drums pound in heavy as well...

this ones out on the much loved Tectonic imprint. Big Up to them for jumping on this...this one should be out next month in all your online local shops : )

Keep it locked!!

Footsie - "1 Spliff" - Out Today!! In fact, we hope its a much longer stay at this much loved venue, which has been a home to electronic/underground mainstays Turrbotax® and Nextah. Konkrete Junngle OG has stayed true to it's 360º "bass music" vision from the past three weeks, with DJ's serving up everything from old skool classics, jump up, and new skool, half-time Drum & Bass to UKG and Dubstep. This coming Monday you can find Rockman, Golden Child, Winter, Micah C and me, Max Echo, as well as the inimitable MC Trac on the mic. Good suds, good peoples and bumpin' bass. For those who don't know me, I'm actually a closet junglist. Jungle sounds of the mid/late 1990's is what introduced me to electronic music and is somehow at the core of what I enjoy about going out to a venue and having my ears turned into bassbins. Outside of Instra:mental, the whole drum-step thing and some harder tracks here and there, most of what is today classified as Drum & Bass I find pretty flat and boring. What actually interests me about Jungle - for the purposes of this post - is the degree to which the influence of this sound is heard in other genres like Dubstep, House and Techno. Most of Skimo's beats sound like an homage to early Detroit sounds spanning a hip-hop wormhole to the time of Dubstep and UK Funky. Full of dark emptiness and rave edge, they fit nicely into a continuing aesthetic of post-noughties hybrid bass minimalisms. Songs like "On Lock", and "Riot" line up both in terms of tempo, reverb levels and drum-breaks with the work of another new arrival, Beneath. Below is Skimo's "Jump", which won him Knowledge Magazine's Unsigned Artist Competition of August 2011 and was released this Monday on Demon Recordings. Demon Recs is better known for harder roller-style DnB releases but the pacing hi-hats and impressive sub frequencies help to align the single with a break/hardcore schmontinuum. The b-side, "In My System", is a pounding industrial R&B rework, that should satisfy fans of the label's earlier catalog. Definitely some style to watch as things start to switch up in 2012.

Skimo - Jump [DemonRecordings006] by SkimoBeats

Max Echo & Bookz - First City Mob podcast Episode #17

We are fast approaching the end of 2011. You'll notice I've moved from slower House tempos back to Grime/Dubstep 140bpm. I've also tried to balance a good variety of synth sounds and sfx without letting the track get too cluttered as a way of training myself towards a less-is-more ideal. They're not professionally mastered but loud enough to throw into a mix. Also, don't watch the transcoded soundcloud playback quality (these are 320kbps and the downloaded file does not have any artifacts) If you play these at a show or on radio let us know how they go off and if you put any in a recorded mix drop us a link. My way of saying thank you for all your support as readers/listeners, Merry Flexmas and a Grimey new year. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. these guys are def on their grind... This time its Hizzleguy coming through with the latest and last of the Goonstep series... you should def make it a point to download all three Goonstep releases as they won't be up on their soundcloud for too much longer.

Make no mistake, there's no shortage of fire on this release. and clockin in at an impressive 15... yes 15 tracks, I have to wonder if he ever gets a chance to leave the studio.. and that doesn't take into account the releases he has coming out throughout the year on other labels. I'm thoroughly impressed with Goonstep 3. - it could have easily been released as 3 separate ep's. but you won't get any complaints from me... I've downloaded them all so far... two of my absolute favorites on there are "Danger Chamber" and "Hit it Raw"... One track that I was looking for on this release that I didn't see though was a track called "The Massive".. you can barely find it on the net.. so far its only on the Gangoon Dubz GetDarker Takeover Episode #118... The first place I heard it was when Lost (HENCH) came to NYC last month and he dropped it, and it blew my head... after a little recon I found it on the Getdarker set... I hope this ones next to get released.. can't tell you how bad I want that track.. Sick!!...

You can download Goonstep Vol 3 here.

or directly from the soundcloud player below...

      Hizzleguy-Goonstep Vol 3 by GangoonDubz

Flashback Fridays - Public Enemy - Shut Em Down (Pete Rock Remix)

what do I really need to say about this remix... this is one of my many favorite tracks, by the one and only Pete Rock.. the textures in this track are jus sick... whether you get trapped in the swirling horn lines, or the organ thats so deep down in the mix you need a blunt to hear it... (trust me its there, you gotta listen reeaaal hard...) the vocal sample gives me the chills still... reminds me of one of those bands from church back in the day.. eerie and beautiful at the same time...

listening back to this track... it feels like it came from another world.. the new york that spawned this music has long gone away... as sad as that may sound on one hand, the flipside is that hip hop music is universal, and its true fans will continue to pass it down no matter where they are on this earth...

Liondub, Dave Q, Hellfire & More - Konkrete Jungle OG 12/12

Each and every Monday, NYC's longest running Jungle night brings 360º of bass music deck wreckage to Sullivan Room. Bolger is the newest member to join the Gangoon family.... and barely into the first track its easy to see why. His production style melds perfectly within the crews expansive sound... and just to get you up to speed for those who don't know, Gangoon Dubz is a Brighton based DJ/Producer collective which consists of Hizzleguy, Dismantle, Zaius, Rudi Redz, Hanz1, 184, Hurley... and now adding Bolger to this powerhouse lineup. The Dubz crew has been on a serious grind this year, and don't seem to be letting up.... I highly recommend checkin the Gangoonz takeover on GetdarkerTV to get you up to date, with back 2 back mixing from Hizzle Guy, Hurley and Bolger... what a way to get introduced...

thing I really like about the Goonz crew is that they'll hit off their fans with a free ep from time to time... -to be honest I'm still playin beats from one of their previous releases...- the Ewart EP will be no different. Tracks off the E.P. that I've listened to multiple times so far are... "Bloopers", "Jumanji", and "X-Pac"... (most of these tracks are featured in the Getdarker live set as well...)

Definitely a solid release to whet your appetite... you can't go wrong either way...

To download tracks off the Ewart EP you can click on the link here or click on the pic above...

Bolger & Pee Eff - Bloopers (Ewart Vol1) by GangoonDubz

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.dontsleepnyc.com/2011/12/gangoon-dubz-ewart-vol-1-ep-free.html" title="Gangoon Dubz - Ewart Vol 1 E.P. One of the most consistently rated producers in the so-called UK Funky scene, Champion once again brings together a formidable formula of octave-jumping, bone-rattling sub-bass, interspersed with his signature sound effects and percussive elements. As with much his earlier repertoire, the tracks assembled here are built around subtle breaks in the song's patterns that derive most of their impact from the use of silence/pause rather than mid-range wallop. It isn't really worth comparing UK Funky with 90's Jungle, but the EP's equatorial theme and classic bass sound make it quite hard not to do so. Can we think of these bubbling dubs as descended from the frenetic pulse of hardcore? It's quite a stretch but the cool and deadly attitude is there all the same. "Selecta" is a personal favorite but you'll want all three to keep things toasty for the rest of the winter months.

MR020 - Champion - Rainforest EP - OUT NOW by RKSLTD

Rebirth E.P. on Cotti's Bassface Records

what a weekend that just passed!!! I had a ball... If you were in the city, there were quite a few parties happening. We had Cotti from the Sumting New crew at Public Assembly on Friday, and Saturday it was Lost from Jakes (H.E.N.C.H.) crew, along with DJG, Commodo, and Joe Nice... Both were wicked parties and the energy was insane... and it reminded me of why I'm involved and drawn to music in the first place... you need that from time to time.....At Friday's show we had the fortunate opportunity to interview Cotti at length, and have exclusive video footage which we'll be posting here shortly... meeting Cotti was very inspiring, and his perspective on the scene and where its going was insightful...

Cotti's US tour comes on the heels of his label's latest release... the Rebirth E.P. which includes tracks by Cotti himself, DJ Enme, Crazy D, and Euby....I'm definitely feelin this EP... and really like the direction of the release... I'd gladly drop anyone of these tracks in a mix, and they would rip... When I saw the tracklist for Rebirth I was hyped cause I've been waiting for Enme's "Terminator" track to drop for some time.... been reppin it for minute...it's a wicked beat. it's hard for me to pick a fav on this release... I can't wait to drop Cotti's "Long Time Coming"... Crazy D is probably more known for his skills behind the mic, but he's got some serious skills behind the boards as well... the intro to his "Can't Wait" track, has an almost Apache styled break... (for the breakdance heads)....

I highly recommend checkin this release... you can cop it at all your fine online stores... such as Boomkat, Itunes, Juno etc..... EZ - and big shouts to the Sumting New crew!!

TUESDAY BASHMENT REPORT: INTRODUCING.... Im off on sum travels next week and before I go I wanna put u guys on to sutin wicked from Spain that must NOT be slept on. Introducing Omega Style. I met this guy throught Facebook a while ago as I noticed he was a sick dancehall producer from Spain and a fan of yours truly. But to my surprise this young prodical artist doesn't just produce bangers but can sing and rap too! and on top of all that he is barely in his teens and so hungry, he puts all my stateside artist to SHAME! yes he puts in work too!!?!?!? whaaaat?!?!? crazy i know....
Omega is from Toleda, just south of Madrid. And I know most of you will already know about this world famous historic and beautiful city, but if you are a lil behind or on the ig'nant side of things, here is a quick sum up via wicked-pedia...

"Toledo (pronounced: [toˈleðo]; Latin: Toletum, Arabic: طليطلة‎, DIN: Ṭulayṭulah, French: Tolède) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo. It is also the capital of autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures, as well as the place where harsh religious persecutions were held against the Jews.
Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Eleanor of Toledo, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2010, the city has a population of 82,489 and an area of 232.1 km2 (89.6 sq mi)."

Anyways, geography lesson aside, Whats special about Omega? Well, apart from being a truly talented producer and artist, he sings about REAL SHIT! not corny love songs, no pop rave bullshit, just wicked sounding songs about real things. About struggle and whats going on in a country going through some major hard times, stuff we can ALL relate to. So, keep your eye on this fella, he has already recorded on a few of my riddims and I plan to link up with him next year as I travel around Spain....So check his video for "Basta Ya" out now (below) and you know where you heard it first! BRRRRAP! DONT FUCKIN SLEEEEEP!!!!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.dontsleepnyc.com/2011/11/tuesday-bashment-report-omegastyle.html" title="TUESDAY BASHMENT REPORT: INTRODUCING.... More than social commentary, we really prefer to use this blog as a site to help promote artists and music that we feel everyone should know about. Looking for something to add to this week's bashment segment I stumbled on Navino who, under the tutelage of the former GAZA general Aidona, has been putting out a long list of releases throughout the previous month. We could take the space here to offer our own interpretation of Aidonia's split from Gaza to form his own production camp but this video will probably give you a better explanation. Finally, what inspired me to add this to the blog is Navino's "Brave" over the Rifle Behavior Riddim on Black Spyda. Some may also be happy to note that the riddim rides at 130 bpm and so should play well some of the "bashier" sounding UKG/Funky tracks we've written about here.

Cotti, Liondub, & Guests at Public Assembly Nov 25th

Lots of big shows this weekend...!!!! The overall effect is something like a bashment riddim retooled with grimey synths and forced into an 8-bar format. J-Sweet is an excellent match on the remix of "Rusty Bell", where he effectively doubles the kicks and claps and launches the bubbling bass into 8th-note orbit. Switching up the pace a bit, Mosca offers perhaps one of the best and least expected remixes of the massively popular Spartan track. Though it's a good jump from any of his house/funky work as well as the previous two tracks, it still clocks in at standard Grime tempos and does what no other remix of the original track has done to reconnect the vanguard of instrumental Grime with dub-pressure roots. A personal favorite to be sure. Last but not least, "Snake Charmer" leaves off with deceptively simple, staggered, half-time rhythm and derives most of its punch from the wonderful bass arpeggio. All in all, a very promising development from "Bag of Myths" and for the future of Ghost House label.
