Boats, Penguins and Doodles.

I know, I know, the woodcutting is as un-doodling as it gets. It’s hard work, it’s definitely not mindless, it requires skill and patience. But just the same, I love the results, especially if they arrive on a Tugboat.

And I can easily see how they could, possibly, start with a scribble on a scrap of stained wrapping paper somewhere in the depths of wood-smelling print shop…
The unfortunately sold-out Penguin Tee captured my heart.

Btw, did I ever show you my own penguins? They, of course, started out as a doodle somewhere on a napkin, but alas, I lost it, so this is a “cleaned up” and “colored in” version:

This gal, jabzug, a student in NYC, is clearly having some fun with the hand-lettering, all while really studying typography and being bored in class. I like it a lot

I’d imagine lovely Canadian artist Eve Duhamel, who studied visual arts in Montreal and Santiago, Chile, was probably also an avid doodler in school. She still is, and we applaud her for that:

And finally, if you’re so lazy, you won’t even doodle letters, you can buy them at Urban Outfitters and stick them on your walls any way you want! Which is also, in a way kind of like doodling.

It’s a ~~bird~~ ~~plane~~ Swedish sneaker-doodle LookDown! Custom-made and right up our alley:

Famous Converse commissioned 100 musicians, graphic and graffiti artists from all over the world to use their canvas (pun intended) for designs inspired by the global fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Jeff Hamada from Booooooom! doodled a cool handy design which was chosen by the Converse people and will appear in the stores near you in the near future.

Super-talented German artist Bobsmade (Anne) doodles on shoes, hats, bags, you name it. And every single thing that she touches with her magic black marker turns ~~from a pumpkin~~ into a trendy wearable art.

You can even watch a youtube video of her, performing the transformation.

And last but not least, some black and white twirly beauties from the before-mentioned Ukrainian SHCH Graphics Group.

Boy, am I glad this workweek is over… So much to do, so little time.Now, do you know what other doodle-related activity can help you unwind and relax when you finally make it home after crazy Friday frenzy? COLORING! Who says it’s for kiddies? Not anymore! There’s a ton of stuff out there specifically geared for adults who still have their pencils sharp and ready. World Beach Project

Well, the weather is certainly appropriate in our neck of the woods (unlike the past long weekend, when it rained on our ~~parade~~ camping trip)! How about some good-old beach-combing? Some people turn it into a super-creative, fun and artistic experience. See for yourself:

Victoria and Albert Museum’s Artist in Residence Sue Lawty devised the World Beach Project as a global art project open to anybody, anywhere, of any age. Building on the experience of making patterns on beaches and shorelines, this project combines the simplicity of making patterns with stones with the complexities of shape, size, color, tone, composition, similarity and difference.
The results are very different in the skill level and artistry, some abstract and some more realistic, some flat and others more 3-D. But that’s the whole point of this creative exercise!!!

Dog Days of Summer

Ok, big news - We’ve got a DOG! Very sweet, little shy, 3 yo black field spaniel. Because of this happy occasion, this post will be devoted entirely to animal doodlers. Or doodles of pets. Or both.
Let me start with the famous Salvador Doggie, a beautiful service Lab named Athens, who paints for charity:

If you’re in the Huston area and have some extra cash - see orangutans create an original painting (you choose the colors!) just for you! That’s pretty cool, considering that you get to enjoy an up-close and personal view of the animal’s creative process, a large painting together with artist’s bio, and your $500 will help to support the Zoo.

And of course, many-many people doodle animals. Some better than others… Illustrator Mike Lowery (Head Master of the Argyle Academy) made a pattern out of his animal doodles:

It does exist!!! Somewhere in the vastness of the blogosphere, there’s a land where pens are aplenty and the paper is always stained, and the swirls are perfectly imperfectly round and the lines are rugged and strong… Aaaa… I would love to live there. It’s called Happy Doodle Land and as any self-respecting land, it has a Queen, named Flora, who’s a graphic designer and illustrator, who doodles a lot and likes butter pecan ice cream.

Moreover, there’s a whole DoodlEarth! It looks a bit dark and digitized (sort of like Matrix movies) but it’s alive and seems to be densely populated by very creative people! They travel, doodle and make animations!

So, go explore and wonder, my fellow doodlers! Seek political asylum in the Doodle Land, discover the Doodle Moon! Especially, because this is our 100th post and we wanted to do something nice for people who make all of this worth our while. Thank YOU!
