Mermaid Scales Tie Dye Shirt DIY!

Use Tie Dye to create a mermaid or fish scale finish on a cotton t-shirt, perfect for Summer fun.

Tie dye is so simple and fun to use.

The tie dye works perfectly with this pattern, it has an ombre vibe and looks awesome!

Make the perfect Summer time shirt, great for themed Mermaid or "under the sea" parties, fun for family reunions, Summer camp craft time and more!

Supplies Needed for Mermaid Scale Tie Dye Shirt:

100% Cotton Shirts
One Step Tie Dye Kit (Shibori is perfect)
Clear Glue
Garbage Bag
Cardboard
Covered Work Space

Step 1: Scales on the Shirt

Begin by covering the cardboard in the garbage bag and inserting it in the shirt. Then use the clear glue to draw scales on the shirt.

Lift the shirt away from the garbage bag and cardboard every once in a while to prevent the shirt from sticking to the cardboard.

Once dry, you can turn the shirt over and continue the scales on the other side if desired.

Step 2: Tie Dye Time!

Now get out the Tulip One Step Tie Dyes.

Mix up the tie dye according to the package directions. Fill to the line with warm water and shake up the dye.

Set the shirt on a covered table, I like to work outside if the weather is nice.

Dip the shirt gently in a bucket of warm water. Then place it back down on the table.

Then put on your gloves and squeeze the dye over the top of the shirt. It will bleed through to the other side, so there is no reason to turn the shirt over.

The glue will act as a resist and leave the lines showing through. Once the shirt is covered, leave it on the table but cover with a garbage bag to help it hold in the warmth.

After 8 hours of warm sunning, rinse the shirt out on the patio with the garden hose. Rinse until the water runs clear out of the shirt.

At this point, the water will begin to break down the clear glue, leaving the white lines behind.

Rinse the shirt and then run it through the washing machine on a normal cycle.

Now it is ready to wear! Sport your Mermaid scale tie dyed shirt all Summer long!

Step 1: Create Your Design

The first step is creating or selecting artwork for your transfer.

I use IdeaStudio with my HTVRONT D2 connected directly to my computer. One of my favorite things about the software is the free library of graphics available for projects. It's easy to find designs in IdeaStudio, purchase artwork from graphic download sites, or even create custom designs from scratch.

You can upload logos, illustrations, text, photographs, and high-quality designs with confidence. The printer excels at reproducing intricate designs, fine details, and sharp details that might be difficult with other printing methods.

Once your design is ready, arrange the design elements on a single sheet of transfer film and prepare for printing.

Step 2: Configure the Print Settings

Before printing, check your print settings carefully.

One important setting that should not be overlooked is selecting "Object Area Fill."

This setting ensures the white ink layer completely covers the backside of the artwork. The white ink layer acts as the foundation for the transfer process and helps maintain vivid colors and best print quality, especially when applying designs to dark fabrics.

Proper print settings help ensure the best results and long-lasting prints after the heat press process is complete.

Unlike using a regular printer or standard inkjet printer, a dedicated DTF system relies on specialized DTF ink and transfer materials to achieve professional results.

Step 3: Print the Design

After confirming your settings, click Start and let the HTVRONT D2 work its magic.

The D2 features dual print heads, allowing the machine to efficiently produce the printed film. The first pass lays down the full-color artwork, and the second pass applies the white ink layer to the entire back of the design.

This dual-head system helps produce high-quality prints with vibrant design elements and outstanding color accuracy.

When the printer finishes, you'll have a beautiful printed design on the DTF film.

However, at this stage the ink is still wet.

Step 4: Handle the Wet Print Carefully

Once the printed film exits the printer, carefully remove it.

The wet ink is extremely delicate and can easily smear if handled roughly. Be sure to support the film while moving it to your powdering station.

I use a shallow plastic container with a lid for this portion of the workflow. My powder adhesive is stored in a shaker bottle that also has a lid to keep everything clean between projects.

Keeping the workspace organized makes it easy to reuse materials and achieve consistent results from print to print.

Step 5: Apply the DTF Powder

Place the printed film inside the shallow container.

Using the shaker bottle, gently apply the hot melt adhesive powder over the entire printed surface. Make sure every bit of wet ink is covered with the powder adhesive.

Carefully tilt and shake the film so the powder coats every area evenly.

Any excess powder can be collected in the container and tapped back into the shaker bottle for future use. This minimizes waste while ensuring complete coverage.

This step is essential because the powder adhesive creates the bond that allows the transfer to adhere permanently during the heat press process.

Step 6: Cure the Transfer in the HTVRONT Oven

Now it's time for the next step.

Place the powder-coated transfer into the HTVRONT curing oven.

The HTVRONT Oven Kit is perfectly sized for the printer's transfer sheets, making the workflow seamless from printing to curing.

Set the oven to:

Recommended temperature: 266°F
Time: 120 seconds

Close the lid to begin the countdown.

As the transfer heats, the hot melt adhesive powder melts and bonds with the printed design. This transforms the fragile wet print into a durable transfer that's ready for application.

When the timer beeps, carefully remove the transfer from the oven.

The ink has dried completely, and the adhesive has fused into a smooth surface on the back of the transfer.

At this point, the transfer is no longer fragile and is ready for storage or immediate use.

Step 7: Press the Transfer Onto Fabric

The final step is applying the transfer to your project.

Position the transfer on your shirt, tote bag, or other compatible surface.

If necessary, use heat-resistant tape to keep the transfer from shifting during pressing, cover with butcher paper or parchment.

Follow the transfer manufacturer's recommendations for temperature and pressure. Place the garment in your heat press machine and press according to the specified settings.

After pressing, remove the carrier according to the transfer instructions. Some transfers use a hot peel method, while others require a cold peel.

Rub with a felt squeegee while warm to make sure edges and corners are fully adhered to the cloth.

For additional durability, many crafters perform a second press after removing the carrier sheet.

This helps lock the design into the fabric and contributes to durable designs and long-lasting prints.

For best results, allow the garment to cool completely before washing. When laundering, wash in cold water and avoid harsh detergents.

If your family loves sunshine, bright colors, and a little spooky flair, hosting your own Summerween party is the perfect excuse to celebrate the best of both seasons.

This unofficial holiday combines all the summer fun we love with classic Halloween decorations, favorite treats, and spooky thrills.

This year I hosted one of my favorite Summerween celebrations ever, filled with colorful DIY decor, outdoor games, tropical treats, and plenty of Halloween fun.

The entire event was designed to encourage kids to enjoy favorite summer activities, get away from additional summer screen time, and create memories together under the summer sun.

What is Summerween?

If you're new to the idea, Summerween originated from the animated show Gravity Falls. In the popular Summerween episode, residents celebrate Halloween in the middle of summer on June 22nd.

Fans of the show quickly embraced the idea, and what began as a fictional holiday has grown into a fun new trend among Halloween lovers--think of it as a Tropical Halloween Party.

Summerween combines equal parts summer party and spooky season celebration--during the sunny time of year.

Think palm trees decorated with ghost faces, watermelon jack-o-lanterns, colorful pumpkins, outdoor games, and a backyard bash full of spooky fun--save your decorations to use for future Summerween parties!

Whether you're planning a haunted pool party, a Halloween-themed pool party, or simply a summer party with a spooky twist, Summerween is the best time to break out the bright colors and embrace a vibrant mix of summer and Halloween.

DIY Summerween Coasters

One of my favorite projects for this ultimate Summerween celebration was creating colorful jack-o-lantern coasters.

I started by painting natural wood slices using Apple Barrel paints in three of the Seaside Marina paints-inspired summer colors.

I chose cheerful summery colors that felt right at home in tropical summer decor.

After the paint dried completely, I painted simple black lantern faces on each wood slice. The silly spooky faces instantly transformed the colorful wood slices into Summerween decor.

Once the black paint dried, I brushed a layer of Plaid Glitter Glitz Paint over the jack-o-lantern faces.

The glittery sparkle catches the sunlight beautifully and gives the coasters just enough spooky shimmer.

These colorful coasters are perfect for serving fruit juices, eerie drinks, or any tropical beverage during summer ween parties.

Dollar Store Sand Bucket Makeover

Every summer party needs a fun centerpiece, and this inexpensive project was one of the easiest festive party essentials.

I found an orange plastic sand bucket at the dollar store and decided it already looked suspiciously pumpkin-shaped.

Using black acrylic paint, I added a simple jack-o-lantern face to the front. After it dried, I applied Black Glitz paint over the design for extra sparkle.

The finished bucket worked perfectly as a candy station filled with gummy worms, candy eyeballs, favorite treats, and other sweet treat options for guests.

Bright Pink Pumpkin Snack Bowl

No ultimate summerween party would be complete without a colorful pumpkin.

Supplies:

Ceramic pumpkin
ColorShot Farmer's Daughter spray paint
Plaid Glitter Glitz Paint
Painters tape for the stem

To create a playful Summerween twist, I spray painted a ceramic pumpkin using ColorShot Farmer's Daughter spray paint. The bright pink color instantly transformed an ordinary pumpkin into something that felt perfectly suited for the summer season.

After allowing the paint to dry completely, I added Pink Glitz paint to pink pumpkin.

The finished pumpkin became a beautiful snack container filled with treats throughout the party. It would also look adorable holding mini pumpkins, wrapped candy, or summerween treats.

DIY Summerween Fabric Ghost Decoration

Every Halloween celebration needs at least one friendly ghost, so I created an easy no-sew fabric ghost using Plaid's Mod Podge Stiffy and supplies I already had on hand.

Supplies:

Mod Podge Stiffy
Green leafy fabric
Plastic cup
Plastic bag
Black acrylic paint
Paintbrush

To begin, I covered a spray paint bottle with a plastic bag. The plastic bag acts as a release layer, making it easy to remove the ghost once everything is dry.

Next, I squeezed the Mod Podge Stiffy into a plastic cup, about 1/4 cup.

I dunked the fabric (cut into a big circle) right into the cup and it soaked up the stiffener.

I draped it over the plastic bag and arranged the fabric so it would dry beautifully overnight.

Once the fabric was fully dry and rigid, I carefully lifted it off the bottle and removed the plastic bag. The result was a freestanding ghost with soft flowing folds that looked perfect alongside my Summerween decor.

To finish the project, I painted a simple winky ghost face using black acrylic paint. The playful expression gave the ghost plenty of personality while keeping the decoration fun and kid-friendly rather than spooky.

I loved how the leafy fabric tied into the tropical theme of the party while still embracing classic Halloween elements.

The finished ghost looked adorable displayed near the snack table and leafy garlands. It was the perfect blend of spooky fun and summer colors, making it a standout piece among all the colorful Summerween decorations.

This project is inexpensive, beginner-friendly, and a great way to create custom Summerween decor that can be reused year after year.

Easy Summerween Decorations

The goal was creating colourful decorations that felt more tropical than spooky.

I decorated the party space with leafy garlands, palm leaves, bright summer colors, and fun Halloween-inspired accents.

For the main focal point, I created a simple Summerween sign by painting "Happy" and "Ween" onto pieces of kraft paper. I hung them on either side of a large gold mylar balloon banner that spelled "SUMMER."

The result was colorful, playful, and perfectly captured the vibrant mix of summer and spooky season.

DIY Summerween Snack Containers

Single-serving snack containers can double as party decor.

I painted the tops of individual Pringles containers using bright Plaid acrylic paints and added black jack-o-lantern faces after they dried.

The colorful containers fit perfectly into the party theme and looked adorable displayed together on the snack table--I love hiding brand names under a fun DIY.

Outdoor Summerween Activities

One of my goals was helping kids focus on summer fun instead of screens.

For outdoor entertainment I picked up:

Bubbles
A hula hoop
A beach ball

Simple activities like these encourage movement, creativity, and social interaction while still fitting perfectly into the Summerween theme.

The kids spent hours running around, playing games, and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Why DTF Printing Is Perfect for Parties

One of the things I love most about DTF printing is its flexibility. Unlike sublimation transfers, which require specific fabric types and light colors, custom DTF transfers can be applied to a wide variety of fabrics and colors.

Step 1: Design Your Party Graphics

Before the party, I found a collection of custom designs that fit our theme at Creative Fabrica.

One of the biggest advantages of DTF printing is the unlimited color range. Unlike screen printing, there isn't a strict color limit, allowing bold designs, vivid colors, and detailed artwork to shine.

Since guests have different tastes, offering several options ensures everyone finds something they love.

Step 2: Build a Custom Gang Sheet

After finalizing the artwork, I arranged all the designs onto custom DTF gang sheets.

Using a gang sheet builder is a great way to maximize space and reduce waste, all the work is easy to do on IdeaStudio.

Step 3: Print the DTF Transfers

Next, I used the HTVRONT D2 DTF Printer to create the transfers.

The print quality was fantastic, with vibrant red tones, rich blues, and a wide spectrum of colors--plus white, that really made the artwork pop.

After printing the ink is wet.

Sprinkle the DTF powder on the wet ink and coat the surface evenly.

Place the transfer in the DTF oven for 2 minutes at 266*F and let the powder melt into the t-shirt adhesive.

DTF prints are known for their vivid colors and excellent detail, and these transfers definitely delivered.

The printer produced high-quality DTF transfers with professional results that looked like they came from a commercial print shop.

Step 4: Prepare the Shirts

For the party, you can ask guests to bring a t-shirt in their preferred size and color.

This works wonderfully because everyone gets exactly the fit they wanted.

Since DTF printing works well on dark fabrics and light fabrics alike, there were no restrictions on shirt color.

Guests can bring everything from black tees to bright colors and neutral shades.

The variety actually made the finished shirts even more fun.

Or you can purchase shirts for the event for just a few dollars and have them ready to press.

Step 5: Organize the Transfer Station

Before guests arrived, I set up a dedicated heat transfer station.

Having a designated pressing area helped the party run smoothly.

I organized:

Shirts
Transfers
Heat press
Teflon sheet
Parchment paper

Keeping everything organized made it easy for guests to choose designs and move through the process.

Step 1: Pick a shirt and place it on the heat mat.

Step 2: Select the DTF transfer and place it on the shirt.

Step 3: Cover with parchment or butcher paper and press with the heat press. Just 310*F for 15 seconds.

Step 4: Replace the heat press.

Step 5: Rub the felt squeegee over the transfer, especially on the edges of each shape.

Step 6: Peel off the transfer film.

Reveal! The colors are vibrant, the shirt looks amazing!

Step 6: Let Guests Pick Their Favorite Design

This was everyone's favorite part.

I laid out all of the custom transfers--and had some hanging by clothespins on twine as a bunting--so guests could browse and choose their favorite graphics.

You could have more variety of patterns, rather than a set of similar bold designs like mine, if you want to include some smaller graphics.

Because I had printed multiple options, everyone could personalize their shirt exactly how they wanted.

The custom order aspect made the experience feel extra special.

Step 7: Position the Transfer

The cart has wheels, and locking wheels, so it's easy to get to all sides of the machine.

The included instructions are very nice and super helpful, walking you through the steps to get started printing.

Begin by removing the packaging, then have some help lifting it up on the cart for easy working.
Remove the orange brackets with the included screwdriver.

First Impressions

My first impression was that the machine looked surprisingly sleek and professional.

It feels like a machine built for serious crafting while still being accessible for hobbyists.

The design is compact enough for a craft room, studio, or home office without dominating the entire workspace.

For small businesses operating out of a spare room or home studio, that footprint is a huge advantage.

I also appreciated the clean design and thoughtful construction.

It's clear that HTVRONT paid attention to usability while developing the machine.

How to Set up Film Roller:

Turn the machine to the backside and remove the 4 screws, then attach the roll holder and screw it in place with those 4 screws.

Slide the roller into the roll of film and hook it on the back, the film feeds into the machine from the back and is easy to keep track of how much is left.

Does the DTF printer circulate white ink?

Yes, it does circulate white ink.

The D2 DTF Printer needs to remain plugged in...it's okay to have it unplugged for a minute while moving the cart into place, but generally it needs to be plugged in and the power button off while not in use.

This will continue to cycle the white ink so it doesn't clog the tubes.

Setting Up the DTF Printer

Setup is often the part people worry about most.

I'll admit that I was slightly nervous before getting started because DTF printing has a reputation for having a learning curve.

The good news is that the setup process was much more straightforward than I expected.

Following the instructions step-by-step made everything manageable.

Like any specialized crafting equipment, there are several steps involved, but nothing felt impossible.

I simply took my time and followed the recommended setup sequence.

How to Fill the Ink on the HTVRONT D2 DTF Printer:

The ink bottles are quite large and located on the right side of the machine.

Lift the hatch and see the bottles, tubes and labels.

Shake up the ink before filling the bottles. Wear gloves and work over a protected surface as the ink can splash a bit when opening up.

Working with White Ink

One of the unique aspects of DTF printing is the use of white ink.

If you've only worked with standard inkjet printers before, this may be new territory.

White ink is what allows vibrant designs to transfer beautifully onto dark fabrics.

It's one of the features that makes DTF printing so powerful.

Learning how white ink works is definitely part of the learning curve, but it's also what unlocks those stunning professional-quality transfers.

Pour the ink into the correct and corresponding container.

Just fill to the top of the straight walled container and not up the angled edge.

Installing the Software

The printer uses IdeaStudio software to help prepare designs for printing.

IdeaStudio is great, it is the same software for all the LokLik products as well, just install and connect the machine. It was easy to walk through the process.

My first impression was positive.

The interface felt modern and relatively easy to navigate.

There are certainly advanced tools available, but beginners can start with basic designs and gradually explore more capabilities.

Having dedicated software helps streamline the workflow and makes it easier to prepare designs for successful printing.

After installing the software, use the touch screen on the printer to run a "check".

This will print out a series of lines in each color. Check them to see if they are straight lines or wonky and missing segments.

If there are missing segments, click "clean", after cleaning "check" again.

I needed to clean mine twice and then do the x and y axis calibration.

It was all lined up, so no other tweaking was necessary, I could move on to printing designs.

I uploaded a picture into IdeaStudio and duplicated it 4 times.

Using the software on the computer, be sure to select the tab: OBJECT AREA FILL

This will cover the exact object with white ink, rather than creating a box of white around it.

My First DTF Print

The moment of truth finally arrived.

After setup was complete, I loaded my design and prepared for my first print.

There's always a little excitement—and a little nervousness—when testing a new machine for the first time.

Would everything work? (yes)

Would the colors look good? (yes)

Would the transfer process go smoothly? (yes)

Thankfully, the results were impressive!

The colors appeared vibrant and detailed, and seeing my artwork printed as a transfer felt incredibly rewarding.

The first print is always memorable, and this one definitely made me excited to keep experimenting.

Creating Transfers

One of my favorite aspects of DTF printing is the flexibility.

Instead of creating a single finished item immediately, you can build a library of transfers ready for future projects.

This opens up opportunities for:

Seasonal collections
Festival inspiration projects
Mother's Day gifts
Small business inventory
Personalized customer orders

Having transfers ready to go can make production much more efficient...plus it's easy to sell individual transfers online and have your machine pay for itself with no inventory needed (just print as ordered) and easy to ship in a flat envelope!

Cure the DTF Transfer with the HTVRONT Oven Kit:

Once your design has finished printing on the DTF film, it's time to turn it into a ready-to-use transfer. Carefully remove the printed film from the printer, taking care not to touch the wet ink.

While the ink is still wet, I use this shaker bottle to generously coat the design with DTF adhesive powder. The shaker bottle makes it easy to apply an even layer of powder across the entire printed area.

Gently tap or shake the film to remove any excess powder, making sure that only the printed portions remain coated. This adhesive powder is what allows the design to bond permanently to fabric during the heat pressing process.

I work right inside one of these containers with a lid. Just open it up, place the transfer in the box, shake on the powder and tap off the excess.

Next, place the prepared film into the HTVRONT DTF Oven set to 266*F. The oven provides consistent heat that melts and cures the adhesive powder, creating a smooth backing on the transfer. As the powder cures, you'll notice it change from a loose, dusty appearance to a glossy, melted finish. This process typically takes just a few minutes and eliminates the guesswork that can come from using alternative curing methods.

Once the transfer has finished curing, carefully remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely. At this point, the transfer is ready to be heat pressed onto a garment or stored for future use. The combination of the HTVRONT shaker bottle and oven kit makes the finishing process simple, clean, and beginner-friendly while helping create professional-quality transfers with vibrant colors and excellent durability.

Pairing the D2 with Heat Presses

Of course, a DTF printer is only part of the process.

Transfers still need to be applied using a heat press.

HTVRONT offers several options that work well alongside the printer, including:

WHAT IS GEL PLATE PRINTING?

Gel Plate Printing is a form of printmaking, it has interesting textures, various techniques, image transfer options and is a unique printing method.

Unlike screen printing, etched plate, a reprintable block or stamping, gel plate printing is only good for one single print, a monoprint.

Mono is the Latin word meaning one, and print.

There are ways to do a series of monoprints using ghost prints and the same kind of print, but it's a new monoprint every time.

Gel plate printing has an element of surprise every time you pull the final prints because of the various effects and interesting textures that can't be duplicated the same way next time in second prints.

The abstract compositions can be layered and layered using negative space or leaving blank space on the printing surface for journaling.

WHAT IS A GEL PLATE?

A gel plate is made of gelatin (synthetic) that is flexible and soft, holds paint and impressions, can be washed off and cleaned easily and can be used to pull thousands of prints.

Gelli Arts gel printing plates are top of the line and great for creating all kinds of beautiful images and printing techniques.

Paper crafting is taken to a whole new level with jelly prints...but gel prints can be done on fabric and other surfaces as well!

The best result is simply having fun, adding textures, colorful backgrounds and interesting shapes...and that really makes a successful print.

There is a learning curve, knowing how much paint to put on the silicone tools and the trick is to just play and learn as you go.

It's just paper and paint!

The only waste of paint is dried out paint left in the bottle!

HOW TO PULL A PRINT:

Basically, apply a thin layer of paint with a brayer or roller to the surface of the gel plate.

It will make a difference of how much paint to use based on climate and even room temperature.

After one or multiple paint colors, pick some textures and press them into the gel plate.

Image transfers can be done with glossy high contrast toner prints (see tutorial below for magazine prints)

Use the residual paint on the gel plate to make a ghost print or add more paint to it and more texture and get another great print.

Damask Polymer Clay Pendants made with Sculpey!

Learn how to make these stunning damask polymer clay pendants!

These pendants are beautiful but are much easier to make than they look.

This fun craft I did back in 2014 and I thought it was time for a much needed refresh!

These damask clay pendant necklaces are absolutely vibrant and stunning!

They are much simpler to make than they look--the mix of colors, the texture...they've got it all!

The way theses damask pendants are painted makes them look so ornate and special.

They are a great craft and make great handmade gifts, ornaments, jewelry, gift tags or any other fun decor idea you have!

Which color is your favorite? I love the teal, pink and blues together. I'm totally addicted to teal, turquoise and blue!

Supplies needed for Damask Clay Pendants:

Oven bake clay, like this white Sculpey
Rubber Stamps (like this damask stamp)
Acrylic Craft Paint
Straw
Baking Sheet/Teflon Sheet
Rag
Circle Cookie Cutter (I like this set because it's round on one side and scalloped on the other)
Ball Chain Necklaces
Small Spatula
Palette and Paintbrush

Step 1: Roll Sculpey

Begin by softening and rolling out some clay about 1/4" thick.

If the clay is very hard, hold it in your hands for a few minutes to let your body heat begin to warm it up.

Step 2: Stamp

Once the clay is rolled out evenly, stamp an impression into the clay using a rubber stamp.

Press firmly enough to leave an impression but not hard enough to squish the clay too thin.

If you don't get it right the first time, smoosh up the clay and roll it again.

Choosing a big background rubber stamp image is the easiest, as opposed to a circle shaped one like this.

Unfortunately, I did this post originally back in 2014, and the stamps I used are no longer available.

Step 3: Cut

Use the cookie cutter to cut a circle of the clay around the stamped image.

Step 4: Cut Hole

Now use the straw to cut a hole in the top of the stamped clay image.

Put it at least 1/4 inch away from the edge of the circle.

Step 5: Repeat!

Now repeat that process for all the clay you have rolled out.

Use different stamps, cut them different sizes, whatever you are excited about!

Step 6: Bake Damask Clay Pendants!

After you have stamped, punched and cut all the clay to your hearts content, use a small spatula to place them on a Teflon sheet on a baking pan.

Bake the pendants according to the Sculpey package directions. (I did it 15 minutes at 275* F)

Step 7: Paint

Let the clay pendants cool down completely after baking.

Then it is time to paint!

You will want a variety of colors, a palette, a damp rag and a paintbrush.

Start by painting the pendant lightly in one color of paint.

Then add patches of another color of paint.

Work quickly and don't take time to paint any details.

This is messy and quick painting...work over wax paper or a disposable work surface.

Now use the damp rag and lightly rub off the top layer of paint.

This will just subtly remove some of the paint, giving it a very awesome distressed look.

Then add a little more paint, this time maybe pink!

Then use the rag again to remove the top surface of paint, letting the paint deep in the cracks and crevices remain.

Okay, now decide when you are satisfied with the distressing.

This looks amazing with the 3 colors of paint and the depth of the rubber stamp impression.

Step 8: Distressing

Or take it even a step further by using the damp rag to really remove the layer of paint on the top most part of the relief impression.

This exposes the clay, air bubbles and additional depth!

Step 9: Necklace

If I did the project today, I would spray it with a varnish finsih.

But Natalie of 2014 did not.

Just let the paint dry and thread a ball chain necklace through the hole and it's ready to wear, hang on something, add to something or just enjoy the process.

Every one of these damask polymer clay pendants is unique and beautiful!

I love how the different colors peek through, the relief looks antiqued and distressed.

I absolutely love the damask stamp.

I wish I could link the exact one I used.

I bought it so long ago, it's now long retired.

I Spy Game Resin Trinket Serving Tray DIY

I Spy Game Resin Trinket Serving Tray DIY!

This I spy game resin serving tray filled with miniatures and trinkets is a fun DIY and would make a great gift! Fill the tray with little things from the junk drawer or little heirlooms that sit in a jewelry box collecting dust.

With a thick layer of glossy resin, the trinkets stay in place and offer a smooth surface for using the tray for serving or a coffee table catch all. Great conversation piece too!

What will you fill your I spy game with? Keys, dice, office supplies, nuts/bolts, screws, nails, bottle caps, broken jewelry, charms, Clue game pieces, rocks, crystals, buttons, small toys, beads, and more! What do you spy in my resin trinket serving tray?

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR I SPY TRAY:

EasyCast Resin
Bag of Trinkets, Miniatures, Game Pieces and Memorabilia
Hot Glue/Gun
Mixing Cups, Stirring Sticks, Disposable Gloves
Serving Tray

Step 1: Glue Down

Use the hot glue gun to glue each little miniature trinket down on the base of the tray.

Continue filling in the spaces with little pieces. The dice was the tallest thing in my tray and used a lot of resin to cover all the pieces...so plan accordingly and pick flat-ish items.

At this point, I ran out of little pieces...so I stopped. There's room for more, so fill as much as you want.

Step Two: Resin

Now mix 8 ounces of resin according to the package directions in the 2 phase process. Mix one part resin and one part hardener and stir for 2 full minutes.

Then pour the resin in the second mixing cup and use a new stick to stir the resin for another full minute. This mixing process is so important for the proper hardening of the resin.

Then pour the mixed resin over the surface of the tray. The resin is self-leveling, so it will move around the tray and fill in gaps, holes and little places in the trinkets.

So, just start with the 8 ounces of resin to give it the proper time needed to fill in gaps.

After 20 minutes, use a heat gun or mini torch to pop any bubbles that have formed.

Then let the tray sit covered overnight. Covering will prevent dust, fluff and even flies from landing on it. Of course, adding a fly in this I spy tray would actually be fun, haha.

After letting the resin cure overnight, mix and add 8 more ounces of resin to the tray. Each cup full of resin will make the tray heavier, so keep that in mind too. Continue this process of adding resin and letting it sit overnight until satisfied with the smooth, covered finish.

Then attach a tag with things for kids to spy as they gaze at the trinket serving tray. Makes a great handmade gift!

How to Paint Pour on Rocks!

Painting rocks is so much fun--they are the perfect canvas for all kinds of art.

Paint pouring on rocks is super duper fun--it's easy and requires no artistic skill level or age range.

Learn how easy it is to paint pour on rocks and do it as a last Summer craft with the kids, with friends for a crafter-noon or as a date night craft.

I coated these gorgeous rocks with a thick layer of high gloss resin.

I love how shiny, shimmery, glittery and smooth they turned out.

If you like painting rocks, you will love these!

I gave this yellow, green and blue one to a little neighbor boy.

Every time he comes over to my house, he brings me pretty rocks because he knows I like them. (usually rocks he found in my yard...but still)

Isn't that the cutest thing ever!?

He's right, I do love rocks!

Supplies Needed for Paint Pour Rocks:

Plaid Crafts FolkArt Drizzle Paint
FolkArt Drizzle Glitter Paint

Rosie Gold Glitter
Opal Crush (favorite)
Gypsy Gold
Disco Dust
Brassy
Mercury
Cloud

Rocks (clean and dry)
Resin or Spray Gloss (optional)
Work surface
Paper cups
Toothpick

Step 1: Set Up

Begin by setting up the workspace.

Place a disposable paper down and then set small paper cups on the table.

Place the rocks on the cups, so the pour can drip down them.

Step 2: Dirty Pour

Then squeeze a bit of paint into a small cup.

Squeeze more paint on top of that.

Continue filling the cup with paint in a growing "target" or "bullseye" shape.

Alternate high contrast colors.

Use white and black for a bold look.

I love the FolkArt Island Hop (bright pink), I use it on all my paint pours!

Step 3: Toothpick

Now use the toothpick and stick it in the paint.

Run it down through the paint in a plus sign shape...just 2 simple swipes.

Step 4: Pour

Now pour out the cup of paint on the rocks.

It swirls and pours right off the edges of the rocks, so this uses...and wastes...a lot of paint!

Still, totally worth it.

If you work on a silicone or non-stick surface, you can let the paint drippings dry and use them for jewelry, mosaics and other crafts.

Repeat the process for all the rocks.

In this scenario, it's kind of hard to know when to stop!

There's a few times I should have just stopped, but I kept pouring on the paint.

Try different techniques:

Pour directly on top of the rock.

Pour in stripes across the rock.

Drop dots of paint on the rock.

Step 5: Dry

Now the hard part.

Leave the rocks to dry completely.

It took about 24 hours for my rocks to dry.

The paint spills and drips down the cup and onto the table surface.

It's a bit messy, but a great craft for any age or any skill level.

Step 6: Resin

Now spray the rocks with a glossy clear coat spray or coat them in high gloss resin.

Let them dry again.

Then they are ready to hide around town for people to find, or keep them for yourself because they are so beautiful!

I love the combination of the vivid colors and the chunky sparkly glitter.

It looks like a cosmic planet...like the kind of planet I would design.

I love the colors together.

I think this one has a ghostly figured poured on it...a woman with long flowy hair...maybe a skeleton face with long ghostly hair...just tip your head to the left and look at it.

What do you think--do you see her?

The cool thing is that the glitter paint looks white when it goes on.

It dries clear with lots of intense glitter and sparkle!

So it's totally a surprise to see how it turns out.

The FolkArt Drizzle Glitter paint is totally worth it!

How to Paint Watercolor Flower Cards (Easy Beginners)

Looking for a handmade card idea that's beautiful, thoughtful, and surprisingly easy to create?

These watercolor flower cards are one of my favorite projects because each card becomes a tiny original painting that can be shared with someone special.

Today I'm sharing my simple process for creating loose floral watercolor paintings and turning them into gorgeous handmade greeting cards.

This project is perfect for beginners, and since I painted six cards at once, it was an efficient way to create a whole set of handmade cards in a single afternoon.

If you've been wanting to try watercolor painting but aren't sure where to start, this is a great beginner project that focuses on simple flowers, loose brushstrokes, and lots of creative freedom.

Let's get started!

Supplies Needed for Watercolor Flower Cards:

Gather the following supplies:

Watercolor Paper
Kraft paper frame insert cards
Watercolor paints (I'm using these!)
Size 2 paintbrush
Washi tape
Pencil
Paper towel
Jars of water
Scissors or paper trimmer

I love using watercolor paper for handmade cards because it holds water beautifully and allows the colors to blend effortlessly.

While acrylic paints are wonderful for many art projects, watercolor paints are the perfect choice for creating these soft floral designs.

Step 1: Cut the Watercolor Paper to Size

The first step is preparing the watercolor paper to fit inside the kraft paper insert cards.

Using a paper trimmer or scissors, cut each piece of watercolor paper so it fits perfectly within the card opening. Be sure to measure carefully so the finished artwork slides neatly into the frame insert.

I prepared six pieces of watercolor paper at once so I could create an entire collection of cards during one painting session.

Working in batches is a good idea because you'll already have your paints and supplies out, making the process more efficient.

Step 2: Tape the Paper Down

Next, use washi tape to secure each piece of watercolor paper to your work surface.

Apply the tape around all four edges of the paper, leaving an even border exposed around the painting area.

This simple trick does two wonderful things:

It helps prevent the paper from buckling too much while painting.
It creates a crisp, professional border around the finished artwork.

One of my favorite parts of the entire project is peeling away the washi tape at the end and revealing those clean white edges!

Step 3: Gather Your Paints

Before painting, set up your workspace.

Arrange your watercolor paints nearby and fill a few jars of water for rinsing brushes and creating clean color mixes.

Keep a paper towel nearby as well. You'll use it constantly for controlling moisture, lifting excess paint, and cleaning your brush between colors.

A simple setup makes the painting process relaxing and enjoyable.

Step 4: Paint the First Layer of Flowers

Now for the fun part!

Begin painting loose flowers across the surface of each card.

I used a size 2 paintbrush and started with a light first layer of petals. The goal isn't perfection—these flowers are meant to be loose, expressive, and painterly.

These simple wildflowers are just 4 petals and they are very simplistic.

Don't worry about making every flower identical. In fact, slight variations make the collection feel more natural and artistic.

I worked on all six cards at the same time, moving from one card to the next as the paint dried.

Step 5: Use a Wet Technique for Soft Blending

One of the easiest ways to achieve beautiful watercolor effects is by using a wet technique.

While the paint is still damp, drop additional color into the petals and watch the colors blend together naturally.

This creates soft transitions and beautiful watercolor textures without much effort.

Watercolor is unique because it often does the work for you. Allow the paint and water to move naturally across the paper.

Resist the urge to overwork the flowers. Sometimes the most beautiful results come from letting the watercolor paints flow freely.

Step 6: Add More Flowers

Continue building your floral arrangement by adding additional blooms around the page.

Vary the size and placement of the flowers to create balance throughout the composition.

Some flowers can be fully open while others can simply be suggested with a few loose brushstrokes.

This approach keeps the paintings fresh and airy rather than overly detailed.

Because I was creating six cards at once, I repeated similar floral themes across all of them while allowing each painting to develop its own personality.

The finished cards coordinate beautifully without looking exactly the same.

Step 7: Paint Leaves and Ferns

Once the flowers have been established, begin adding leaves and ferns.

These greenery elements help fill empty spaces and create movement throughout the design.

Using the tip of the brush, paint simple leaf shapes with quick strokes.

For the ferns, use a light touch and create small marks extending from a central stem.

The leaves and greenery help connect all the flowers and make the composition feel complete.

Step 8: Build Depth with Additional Color

After the initial layers have dried slightly, add deeper shades to selected petals and leaves.

This second pass helps create dimension and contrast.

Focus on:

The center of the flower
Overlapping petals
Areas where shadows would naturally occur

Adding darker accents helps the flowers stand out while maintaining the loose watercolor style.

Remember, a little extra color goes a long way.

Step 9: Add Paint Splatters

One of my favorite final touches is watercolor splattering.

Load your brush with slightly diluted paint and gently tap it over the artwork to create small speckles across the page.

These splatters add energy, movement, and a playful artistic feel.

You can use coordinating colors or even a contrasting shade for extra interest.

The splatter technique helps tie the entire composition together.

Step 10: Remove the Washi Tape

Once the paintings are completely dry, carefully remove the washi tape.

Pull the tape back slowly at an angle to prevent tearing the paper.

This is always the most satisfying part of the process!

The tape reveals a perfectly clean white border around each painting, instantly making the artwork look polished and professional.

Step 11: Sign Your Artwork

Using a pencil, lightly sign each painting.

I love signing my original watercolor artwork before framing it inside the card.

This small detail transforms the card into a miniature piece of art that the recipient can treasure long after they've read the message inside.

Step 12: Assemble the Cards

Finally, slide each watercolor painting into the kraft paper frame insert card.

The warm kraft paper pairs beautifully with the soft watercolor flowers and creates a finished card that feels both rustic and elegant.

These frame cards are easy to find on Amazon or at Michaels. I'm using a small card size, but as long as an envelope comes with it, you can make them any size. 4x6 and 5x7 are standard frame card sizes.

You can find white cardstock frame cards or brown kraft paper cards. Pick your favorite!

Each card becomes a unique handmade gift complete with original artwork that can be shipped easily and cost-effectively at just one stamp!

I love the clear border on the artwork and how it shows even in the frame card. Be sure to measure your cards and test out the center shape before beginning.

Tips for Success

If you're new to watercolor tutorials, keep these tips in mind:

Use plenty of clean water.
Work with light layers first.
Allow colors to blend naturally.
Keep a paper towel nearby.
Embrace imperfections.
Let each painting develop organically.

How to Make Easy DIY Watercolor Floral Bookmarks

These handmade watercolor bookmarks are one of my favorite ways to turn a small piece of watercolor paper into something special.

With just a few supplies and a simple floral design, you can create lovely floral bookmarks perfect for tucking into your favorite novel or gifting to a book-loving friend.

These handmade watercolor bookmarks make great gifts for teachers, bookclub members and book lover friends, neighbors, and anyone who loves beautiful paper and handmade pieces--perfect for Summer Camp crafts too!

Add a tassel and protective sleeve, and you've got a polished little project that looks straight from an art shop!

Let's get started!

Supplies Needed for Watercolor Bookmarks:

Gather the following supplies: (no powerful tools needed)

Watercolor paper
Watercolor paints (Learn to fill a watercolor palette from paint tubes here!)
Paint brushes
Clean water
Pencil
Scissors or paper trimmer
Plastic protective sleeve s and tassel kit
Paper towel

I recommend using cold press watercolor paper because the texture creates beautiful watercolor effects and holds up well to multiple layers of paint.

Step 1: Cut the Watercolor Paper

Start with a sheet of paper and cut it into bookmark-sized strips...the bookmark kit comes with kraft paper but it's not quite enough for watercolor.

I cut my watercolor paper into 2 inches wide by 6 inches tall to fit in the sleeve, but you can make your paper bookmarks any size you'd like, especially if you are just laminating them.

Using a paper trimmer helps create straight edges and professional-looking bookmarks. Cut several pieces at once if you'd like to create a lovely set.

These also make wonderful printable bookmarks if you choose to scan your finished artwork later.

Step 2: Sketch Simple Flowers

Using a pencil, lightly sketch a few simple flowers onto the watercolor paper.

Keep the pencil marks light so they won't show through the finished painting.

Simple floral doodles work beautifully for this project. Try:

Daisies
Wildflowers
Roses
Tulips
Leaves and stems
Botanical branches

Remember that this is an original design project, so don't worry about making everything perfect. Loose and playful flowers often look the most charming.

There's no reason to get too hung up on sketching out flowers, I'll show you how to do all the work with your paintbrush.

Step 3: Paint the Flowers

Now for the fun part!

Using watercolor paints and a little clean water, begin painting your flowers.

Start with a light color wash and gradually add deeper tones. Watercolors are easiest to control when working from light to dark.

Choose different colors for each flower to create visual interest. Bright pinks, cheerful yellows, soft blues, and fresh greens all work beautifully together.

If you're painting botanical bookmarks as gifts, consider matching the colors to the recipient's personality or favorite book cover.

Allow colors to blend naturally on the painting surface for that soft watercolor look we all love.

Step 4: Add Leaves and Details

Once the flowers are painted, add leaves, stems, and small details.

This is where the bookmark really comes to life.

Use a smaller brush to add:

Delicate leaves
Tiny buds
Dots and accents
Fine stems
Additional floral doodles

Keep the design simple and airy. A floral watercolor bookmark doesn't need lots of detail to be beautiful.

Step 5: Let the Paint Dry Completely

Allow the watercolor to dry fully before handling.

This step is important because damp paint can smudge inside the protective sleeve.

Depending on humidity levels and the amount of water used, drying usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

The good news is that watercolor projects dry much faster than many other painting techniques.

Step 6: Erase Pencil Marks

Once completely dry, gently erase any remaining pencil marks.

Use extraordinary care during this step so you don't damage the watercolor paper.

Removing the sketch lines gives the finished bookmark a clean and professional appearance.

WATERCOLOR PAINTBRUSH TECHNIQUE:

The paint brush should be doing all the work for us.
The paintbrush should be round with a sharp point on the end.
This is the perfect shape for petals and leaves.

Fill the paintbrush with paint.
Touch the paintbrush to the paper and pull toward yourself a little bit.
As you pull forward, press the brush down a little harder.
Continue pulling forward and lift the brush up to the point gently.

This technique should create the perfect leaf or petal.
Use some scraps of watercolor paper to practice the motion a few dozen times.
That's the only shape you need to make to create these floral watercolor bookmarks!

WASHI TAPE BORDERS:

Another fun way to make these bookmarks is to tape the watercolor paper down to the table using washi tape.

This will create a smooth border and a different look!

Tape down all the edges equally, and then begin painting.
Let the shapes run off the edge of the paper onto the washi tape to give it an organic feel.

Fill with all the brightly colored flower petals and leaves, then let it dry slightly.

Then remove the washi tape from the 4 sides, revealing a flawless frame around your masterpiece!
I love how this looks and the tape peel is ALWAYS satisfying.

It takes a little patience, but once the paint has dried, you'll have a beautiful custom palette packed with your favorite colors and ready for happy painting whenever inspiration strikes!

Today I'm sharing exactly how I fill my ceramic watercolor pans inside a metal palette tin using MaimeriBlu watercolor tubes.

This simple process creates a compact studio palette that travels well, lasts for months, and makes painting quick and convenient.

Why Fill Your Own Watercolor Palette?

There are lots of wonderful watercolor sets available, from beginner plastic palette sets to professional watercolor pans from brands like QOR from Golden and Daniel Smith.

I'm testing out this 6 tube set from MaimeriBlu, it's rated as a professional watercolor set, it's a great price and has super vibrant colors.

Creating your own palette gives you complete control over the colors you use most.

Instead of purchasing pre-filled watercolor pans, you can select the exact colors of your choice and create a palette filled with your favorite colors. Whether you love bright tropical hues, earthy landscapes, floral painting, or bold abstract work, customizing your own colors helps streamline your painting process.

Creating your own palette also means:

Choose custom colors that fit your painting style.
Replace individual colors as needed.
Save space by carrying only the paint color selections you actually use.
Build a palette that grows along your creative journey.
Easily experiment with a new color without purchasing a whole set.

Supplies Needed for Filling Watercolor Palette:

Here's what I use to fill my watercolor pans:

Metal palette tin with removable half pans
Ceramic watercolor pan insert
MaimeriBlu watercolor tubes
Toothpick
Paper towels or baby wipes
Water
Small tray or work surface

You can use any professional watercolor tubes for this process. Popular brands include Qor by Golden, Daniel Smith, MaimeriBlu, and other artist-grade watercolor paints.

Some student-grade watercolor tubes will work well too, but they are made with more fillers and less pigments, so the color is never quite as vibrant as a professional color. In my opinion, it's worth the price for higher quality paint.

The Colors I Chose

For this palette, I selected the Jeannie Dickson Artist pack with six vibrant primary colors that mix beautifully together:

Yellow Vanadium
Orange Lake
Yellow Ochre
Primary Red Magenta
Turquoise Green
Quinacridone Violet Reddish

Starting with primary colors is one of the best ways to create an incredibly versatile palette. Using just six colors allows you to mix nearly every color wheel combination imaginable.

You could also add colors like Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Hooker's green, or other favorite colors later if desired.

Choosing a Palette

There are many types of watercolor palettes available.

The type of palette you pick is based on your personal preferences, lifestyle and where you will spend the bulk of your painting...traveling or at a dedicated desk.

Here's the types of palettes to choose from:

Metal Palette

A metal palette is wonderful because it is sturdy, portable, and often includes a built-in mixing area. Most metal palette tins fold open to reveal multiple mixing surfaces, making them ideal for travel and studio use.

Plastic Palette

A plastic palette is lightweight and inexpensive. It's airtight, to keep the paints from leaking or molding. Many first watercolor palettes are made from plastic and feature built-in watercolor wells and paint wells.

Ceramic Palette

Ceramic palettes offer smooth mixing surfaces that are easy to clean and don't stain as easily as plastic. I love using ceramic inserts inside my metal palette for the best of both worlds.

Half Pans vs Full Pans

When shopping for watercolor pans, you'll usually encounter two common sizes.

Half Pans

Half pans are compact and fit more colors into a smaller space. They're perfect for travel kits and portable painting setups.

Full Pans

Full pans hold significantly more paint and are great for artists who frequently use large brushes or paint large pieces.

Half pans will give you a greater variety of colors for the space.

The great thing is that the filling process is exactly the same for both half pans and full pans.

Step 1: Arrange Your Empty Pans (If Necessary)

Start by placing your empty watercolor pans into your metal palette.

I like to organize colors in a way that makes sense for mixing:

Yellows together
Reds together
Blues together

Keeping colors organized makes it easier to locate a specific color name while painting and helps you visualize color wheel relationships.

If you're creating your first studio palette, don't worry too much about perfect placement. If you are using pans that click into the palette, you can always rearrange pans later.

If you are using ceramic pans like me, you'll want to know where each color is going before starting, sketch it out if it helps!

Step 2: Fill Each Pan with Tube Paint

Now comes the fun part!

Take your watercolor tubes and gently squeeze tube paint directly into each pan.

I like to fill each pan almost to the top. Watercolor paints shrink quite a bit as the water evaporates during drying.

Don't be surprised if a pan that looks completely full on day one settles noticeably after drying.

A tiny bit of extra paint now helps ensure a nicely filled pan later.

Try not to introduce air bubbles while squeezing the paint. Slow, steady pressure usually works best.

Fresh paint is soft and creamy, making it easy to distribute evenly.

Step 3: Smooth the Paint

After filling a pan, use a toothpick to gently stir the paint.

This step serves several purposes:

Removes trapped air pockets
Helps settle the paint
Creates a smooth surface
Distributes pigment evenly

I carefully move the toothpick through the paint and level the top so the paint fills the corners of the pan.

This simple step only takes a few seconds but makes a big difference in the final appearance of your watercolor wells.

Step 4: Let the Paint Dry

Once all of the pans are filled and smoothed, place the palette somewhere safe and allow the paint to dry completely.

This is the hardest part because it requires patience!

Depending on humidity, climate, and the specific paint color, drying can take anywhere from one to two weeks.

Some watercolor tubes contain different pigment numbers and formulations that dry faster or slower than others.

Avoid closing the lid tightly during the drying process. Good airflow helps moisture evaporate more efficiently.

You'll notice the paint gradually shrinking and firming up as it cures.

Step 5: Activate the Paint with Water

Once the paint is fully dry, your palette is ready to use.

To activate the paint, simply touch a wet brush to the surface of the watercolor pan, spritz with a small spray bottle, squeeze out a little water with a dropper or syringe.

Within seconds, the paint softens and becomes ready for painting.

One of the things I love most about professional watercolor tubes is how easily they rewet after drying. Even after months in a palette, the colors activate beautifully.

The result is vivid, highly pigmented color that feels almost like working with fresh paint.

Mixing Colors in Your Palette

A good mixing area is one of the most important features of any watercolor palette.

The built-in mixing surface on my metal palette gives me plenty of room to experiment with color combinations.

Using only six carefully selected primary colors, I can create:

Vibrant oranges
Rich purples
Tropical greens
Neutral browns
Soft grays

Learning to mix your own colors rather than relying on dozens of premixed paints helps build confidence and a deeper understanding of color relationships.

It's amazing how many custom colors can be created from a small selection of paints.

Tips for Success

Label Colors

If you're using several similar shades, write the color name and pigment numbers somewhere for future reference.

Fill Pans in Layers

If a pan shrinks dramatically after drying, simply add another layer of paint and allow it to dry again.

Keep Your Palette Clean

Wipe excess paint from the mixing surface after each painting session to keep colors fresh and bright.

Start Small

For your first time filling watercolor pans, begin with just a few colors rather than an enormous palette.

Use Quality Paint

Artist-grade watercolor paints generally reactivate more easily and provide stronger color than student-grade paints.

DIY Laser Engraving a Mirror with xTool S1 20W Diode

Engrave a mirror with the xTool S1 Laser Cutting machine for a gorgeous statement piece of home decor.

The world of home laser cutters is expanding!

Owning your own laser cutting machine is not only possible, it's pretty commonplace!

The xTool S1 20W laser cutting machine stands at the forefront allowing crafters and creators to engrave intricate designs with unparalleled precision.

This advanced laser cutting machine is equipped with a powerful 20W laser that can etch designs onto various materials, including glass. Its precision and efficiency make it an ideal tool for crafting intricate patterns on mirrors, transforming them into personalized works of art.

It doesn't take years of experience to operate the best laser engraving machine--it just takes a little leisure time to get started.

If you don't have a home laser cutter yet, here's some to consider:

xTool Machines:

CO2 Laser xTool P 2 Machine (CO2 is the only laser beam that cuts all colors of ACRYLIC)
xTool F 1 Portable Laser Cutter
xTool S 1 20W or 40W ( I have the 20W--see this post)
xTool M 1 10W Deluxe RA2 Pro (this is the one I have--see this post)

Diode laser machines are very capable as a laser engraver on wine glasses or a glass surface.

They are great for adding a personal touch to so many surfaces, giving intricate designs or any customized design of your choice.

Great for laser enthusiasts and small businesses too!

The latest version, xTool S1 has built in fire detection which helps keep you safe and give xTool it's outstanding track record of current safety standards.

Supplies Needed for Laser Etching Mirror:

xTool Laser Engraver
Honeycomb Panel
Mirror (mines' from the dollar store)
Floral Pattern or other design (easier if it's black and white)
Gold Leaf and Gold Leaf Adhesive (optional)

Optional Additions for the xTool are nice to have but not immediately necessary:

Fire safety set
Automatic conveyor feeder
Riser base
xTool desktop smoke purifier

Step 1: Design Your Floral Pattern

First step: start by creating or obtaining a floral pattern that resonates with your vision for the mirror.

The image needs to be reversed since we are glass etching the backside of the mirror.

Open it in xTool Creative Space and select it as "engrave".

It will optimize the image for engraving.

Then scale it the size of your mirror.

Step 2: Prepare the Mirror

Clean the surface of the mirror thoroughly to remove any dust or debris for ensuring the best etching results.

Clean off the foam pads as best as you can, I scraped mine off with my finger and that seemed to be an efficient method.

Ensure that the mirror is securely placed on the xTool S1's cutting bed.

I did not use any tempera paint or marking spray, but I believe you do that when etching a plain glass sheet or any type of glass.

Step 3: Configure Laser Settings

Place the mirror with the back side facing up on the xTool S1 honeycomb bed.

Use the magnetic clamps to hold the mirror in place.

Select the workable area on the xTool Creative Space software and position the floral pattern in that space.

Configure the laser settings based on the type of mirror and the desired depth of engraving.

It's a good idea to buy a few of these from the dollar store and use one as a test grid so you know the perfect settings for the mirror.

Step 4: Laser Engraving

Initiate the laser engraving process.

The xTool S1 will follow the precise path defined by your floral design, etching the pattern onto the mirror's backing with accuracy.

Stay with the xTool while it works, although the risk of fire is lower when engraving on a mirror, it's important to be near in case something goes wrong.

After the etching if complete, clean off the surface of the glass and the backing one more time.

Step 5: Gold Leafing

Now if you want to add some fun metallic sparkle to the mirror, use some gold leaf adhesive and paint it over the back of the etched glass mirror.

For best results, allow the adhesive to dry completely.

It will still be tacky, but not shiny.

I'm a huge fan of gold leaf, it gets all the 5-star reviews around here...but you can use any colored leafing or even modpodge with tissue paper, patterned napkins or some fabric for the coolest etched mirror effect!

Check out this Acid Etched Mirror I did a decade ago!

After the adhesive is dry, place a sheet of gold leafing or equivalent over the top of it and smooth it with a dry paintbrush or a dry cloth.

The gold leaf will only adhere where there is adhesive...or it will brush off.

That could be a cool aged mirror effect too, so get creative with your gilding.

The first thing I noticed was how much of the mirror backing my floral design and the focused beam of light removed.

I would try it again with a less "black" image and leave more of the mirror backing.

But for my first try, it's a glorious candle holder!

These would make gorgeous handmade gifts or centerpieces for an event, wedding or party!

The best part is how the gold metallic leaf shines through, almost mirror-like itself!

The paint on the backside of the mirror is gently removed.

I noticed a couple places where the honeycomb panel etched through slightly...so I would place it on a piece of black paper in the future and see how that goes.

Again, getting dollar store mirrors is the way to go and work out those little details.

Mirrors are typically made by coating one side of a sheet of glass with a thin layer of metal, usually silver or aluminum, to create a reflective surface. The process involves several steps:

Cleaning: The glass is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, dust, or impurities that could affect the quality of the mirror.
Coating: A thin layer of metal is deposited onto one side of the glass using a process called "silvering" or "aluminizing." In the silvering process, a solution of silver nitrate is applied to the glass, followed by a reducing agent that causes the silver ions to deposit onto the glass surface as metallic silver. In the aluminizing process, aluminum is vaporized in a vacuum chamber and allowed to condense onto the glass surface.
Protecting: Once the metal coating is applied, a protective layer, often made of paint or varnish, is added to the back of the mirror to prevent the metal from tarnishing or corroding.
Drying and curing: The mirror is allowed to dry and cure thoroughly to ensure that the metal coating adheres properly to the glass and that the protective layer is fully set.

This process results in a smooth, highly reflective surface that allows mirrors to be used for various purposes, including personal grooming, interior decoration, and scientific applications.

That's it!

Tropical Tote Bags Summer Camp Craft

Get ready for Summer sunshine with these cute tropical vibe tote bags! Need a quick craft for Summer camp or just a fun activity? Stenciling is the solution! It's easy and great for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

Stencil Revolution sent me a few stencils to sample and I love them. They make this project simple and successful for any skill level.

I love the tropical vibe. I could live at the beach with my feet in the sand. So I picked some stencils with the beachy vibe to them...plus I love peacocks!

Stencil Revolution has a wide range of stencils in varied sizes. For this tote bag project, I used the 8.5x11 size in the flamingo, pineapple, and peacock.

Supplies Needed for Stenciled Tropical Totes:

Paint (Apple Barrel from Plaid Crafts)
Tote bags (Organic Cotton from Totebag Factory)
Cardboard to fit inside the tote bag
Stenciling Brush or Sponge Brush
Stencil Revolution Reusable Stencils (flamingo, pineapple, and peacock)

Step 1: Tote Bag Prep

Slip the cardboard inside the layers of the tote bag to prevent the paint from seeping to the backside. No adhesive needed...just place the stencil on the tote and hold firmly. Or secure it in place with a little painters tape on the top and bottom edge.

Step 2: Paint the Image

Open the paint and hold stencil steady while you dab the stencil brush straight up and down.

I used 2 different shades of yellow to give it some depth, but it's not necessary.

Same process for the green crown leaves.

Step 3: Wash Stencil

Remove the stencil and wash with warm soapy water. Let the bag dry and remove the cardboard.

Perfection! Ready to fill with books, groceries and more!

Step 4: Repeat with the Flamingo

The process for the Flamingo is identical, using 3 shades of pinks to add some variety.

Remove the stencil and wash while the paint is still wet. Wash the brush and let the image dry.

Looks fabulous! I love the tropical flamingo vibe!

Step 5: Repeat with the Peacock

And finally the peacock--all those teals and aquas! Incidentally, these are my most favorite of colors!

Repeat the same steps as the tote bags previously and then let the peacock dry.

Rooted in ancient resist-dyeing techniques--tie dye is not a new product. Tie-dye's resurgence in the 1960s embraced by the counterculture and love collection, seamlessly integrates with American symbolism.

Evoking the spirit of freedom and unity, these shirts symbolize a dynamic intersection of tradition and modernity. Crafted with bold, striped patterns and the iconic colors of the American flag, tie-dye patriotic shirts offer lucky collection of personal style and patriotism.

This fusion of ancient artistry and contemporary aesthetics transforms a simple garment into a wearable celebration of individuality and national identity.

Tie dye is so much fun! It's fun to have a big group of friends get together to tie dye.

SHIRTS:

Shirts: They will take the dye if they are good quality 100% cotton.

If they are not 100% cotton, there can be bleeding (i.e. turning the white part of the shirt pink) or fading. I get emails about this all the time. I cannot guarantee results. My shirts turned out red and white.

Find any sizes s-xl of shirts, use crewneck sweatshirts or even an infant onesie for the unique look of tie dye...if you are hosting a party, I highly recommend unisex fit size shirts so it's easier for everyone to make a shirt...or have everyone bring their own cotton shirts.

Getting Started:

These 2 small bottles of Red and Blue did 2 shirts.

Wet the Shirts:

Begin by pre-washing the t-shirts, but don't dry them. Soak them in a big bowl or 5 gallon bucket of warm water until ready to start the dying. Then wring them out to get started.

Lay the shirt out on your covered table. The Tie Dye Party box comes with a plastic surface and gloves, but I just used a plastic tablecloth and a garbage bag.

Step 1: Soak and Gather Shirt

Begin by soaking the shirt in some warm water (the dye will take better than with cold water).

Then gather in a diagonal line from the edge you want to start on to get the unique look of the stars and stripes.

I recommend holding onto the bottom right corner and gathering the shirt in a line from there.

You can also hold at the shoulder and gather in a line.

Here I am starting at the shoulder...if you want to start at the bottom, just start at the bottom corner.

(differences posted at the end of this post)

Tie the Shirt:

Pull the bottom right corner of the shirt and the top left shoulder to begin the gathering process.

Scrunch the shirt along that line.

Then add zip ties. The first zip tie should be at the bottom corner and then work the way up to the shoulder...the last section (that will be dyed blue) should include the sleeve and the collar.

I did 2 shirts, one had 3 red stripes, the other had 5...but it should have an odd number of red stripes.

This way the stripe right under the blue is red and the very end of the shirt is red.

Then place the shirt on the baking rack.

This rack is critical because it keeps the shirt off the table, so the excess dye drips off and the shirt doesn't sit in puddles of dye and mess up the colors.

Step 2: Zip Ties

Zip tie the first tie about 4 inches or so from the shoulder edge, then every 2 inches until the end. You can use rubber bands for this, but I find zip ties are so much easier and tighter.

Or if starting from the bottom corner, zip tie every 2 inches until about 4 inches from the shoulder end.

Just like this. Now the big section with extra room by the shoulder/collar is blue.

Then alternate RED and leave the plain white shirt for the rest of the alternating sections to create this attention-grabbing tie-dye pattern.

Step 3: Tie Dye Time

Wear gloves, work over plastic on a drying rack.

Gently squeeze out the dye in each zip tied section of the shirt.

Dye the Shirt:

Fill the bottle to the line with warm water and shake until well mixed.

Follow the package directions.

Add blue dye to the big section of the shirt.

Add red to the stripe right next to the blue section and then skip the next section to leave it white. Continue this pattern until done.

Then turn the shirt over and fill the backside with the same colors.

Repeat for the larger shirt with additional stripes. These 2 shirts used all the dye in the bottles.

Best Tie Dye Set up:

I like to lay out a garbage bag and then use a baking rack...this will keep the dye from puddling and running together underneath.

Step 4: Wrap Up for Hours

Wrap it in a grocery bag and place in warm area for 6-8 hours. I place them in individual bags and set them in a full sun spot in the yard...and leave them all day...and all night.

Set Aside for Hours:

Seriously, place the shirt in a plastic bag and wrap it carefully so the shirt doesn't touch other parts of the shirt in the bag. Wrapping the shirt in cling wrap is a good way to start too. Then set the plastic bag out in the sun for 6-8 hours.

This part is very critical for the dye to actually set in the fibers of the cotton.

If you rinse too early, the shirt will fade or bleed.

Wash the Shirt:

After the curing time is over, carefully remove the shirt from the bag and rinse in the sink. Use scissors to carefully clip the zip ties off the shirt and continue to rinse the shirt until the water runs clear.

If you are working outside, you can also lay the shirt out on the sidewalk and spray it with the hose to rinse out the excess dye.

Remember, the solution to pollution is dilution!

Then put it in the washing machine on a regular wash. This immediate washing will help the colors not to run into the white stripes or each other.

The dye will lighten slightly after drying. It's so easy and makes such a great shirt! Get a big group together and make a bunch with friends.

Look close at the wrinkle lines on the shirts below and that will give you a better idea of how to gather them--no worries though, pattern inconsistencies are part of tie dye!

Pinch off on the bottom right corner of the shirt and work your way back to the left sleeve for this one:

Or start on the sleeve and work your way to the bottom right corner of the shirt.

Just that wrapping/tying difference will give your shirt the desired effect!

Your wrapping selection results in the curves of the stripes to shine out like sun rays from the top down...or from the bottom up.

Summer time really is the best time for doing tie dye because it's so much easier to work outdoors and the heat from the sun makes the colors last better.

I made tie dye shirts in the hot and humid south as well as the dry and arid west, and didn't notice one being better than the other.

How to Tie Dye Tote Bags (DIY Tie-Dye Canvas Bag)!

Learn how to tie dye high-quality colorful canvas tote bag.

It is super fun and easy it is to tie dye tote bags!

All you need is 100% cotton tote bags and Tulip Tie Dye Party Kit and you are ready to go!

Inviting friends over to tie dye is a fun summer tradition for us...if you haven't had the chance, try it!

Tie Dying is random and spontaneous, creating awesome or subtle gradations!

It is so fun to see the reveal of how the project turns out and is a great way to make custom bags for an event, a trip to a sandy beach, sports event, party favors or just a fun bag with a splash of color!

Supplies Needed for Tie Dye Tote Bags:

Tulip One-Step Dye Party Kit (Tie-dye kits are the way to go)
100% Cotton Totes (ShirtSpace is the best place for blanks!)
Washable marker
Zip ties
Disposable work surface
Wire drying rack (thrift stores are perfect for this)
Plastic grocery bags
Basin of water (warm, not cold water)

Step 1: Prep the Fabric Dye

Fill the Tulip One Step Tie Dye bottles according to the package directions.

I have only used Tulip One Step Tie Dyes, so I cannot vouch for or recommend any other dyes.

Fill the plastic squeeze bottles to the fill line and shake up the dye with the cap on.

Cover the table with a disposable work surface.

Set the baking rack on the table.

Have gloves out and ready to go.

Step 2: Get Started

Soak the new tote bag in a basin of warm water.

This will prep the bag and help the it absorb the dye.

Step 3: Tie Dye

Lay the bag on the table to plan out the tie dying design.

Use a marker to draw the pattern or just twist and tie up with elastics, rubber bands or zip ties.

Let's make a Rainbow Tie Dye Tote!

Fold in half and draw half a rainbow on the bag with the marker, the highest part on the folded line.

Gather the bag along the line and tie a zip tie tightly over the marker line.

Then add zip ties down the bag.

Watch the video for all the details!

Until you have tied on 8 (or so) zip ties.

Place the bag on the baking rack.

How to Tie Dye:

The process of tie dying is easy if you have everything ready to work with.

Wear gloves and have the tie dye bottles all filled up and ready to use.

Fill the top zip-tied open space with red dye, move onto orange and yellow...and so on through all the colors of dye.

Continue with the rest of the rainbow.

Add blue dye to the top and the bottom of the bag.

Then turn over and fill the other side with the same colors.

The excess dye drips off the baking sheet onto the disposable table cover, making clean up easy and keeping the dye colors from puddling, mixing together and turning the backside of the custom totes from turning muddy.

Place in a plastic grocery bag and let it sit in the sun for 8 hours.

Then wash it out in the sink, clip the zip ties off and continue washing until the water runs clear.

Then immediately wash in the washing machine, dry it and enjoy!

Now let's make a Heart Bag!

For the 2nd tote, let's do a big tie-dye heart in the center.

Fold the bag in half and draw a half heart on the bag, with the points on the folded edge.

Gather the marker line so it makes a straight line and tie it off with a zip tie.

Then add zip ties up the rest of the bag...just like the rainbow bag.

Place on the baking rack and add colors.

The red one is the heart shape.

Turn over and repeat the colors on the backside.

Place in a plastic grocery bag and let it sit in the sun for 8 hours.

Then clip off the zip ties and rinse in the sink until the water runs clear.

Put it in the washing machine and wash it like a normal load.

I washed all the totes together after I rinsed them.

This tie dyed heart tote is so cute!

Let's make a Galaxy Tote!

Wet the bag and place on the table.

No need for the rack.

Fill the bag with bright, vibrant dyes.

Add splashes, swirls and dyes of every color.

It's awesome just like this but will have lesser value of color tones after it is washed out.

Or turn it into a galaxy by adding black!

Set in the sun in a plastic bag, rinse thoroughly, wash and dry!

The vibrancy has dimmed, but it's still a great galactic bag!

Just add planets and stars with paint or iron on vinyl.

Traditional Tie Dye Twist:

Twist the wet tote bag and wrap it in rubber bands.

Add all kinds of tie dye colors.

Then let the tote sit in a plastic bag 4-6 hours before rinsing out and washing.

Let your tie dye party friends experiment and they will come up with clever and unique ideas!

I love upcycled crafts. There is nearly nothing better than taking something destined for the landfill and turning into pure joy. This Rocket Jet Pack is the perfect upcycled craft.

How to Make Disco Mirror Ball Shoes DIY Tutorial

Disco Mirror Ball! Ever been to a club, dance hall or school dance and just thought "I totally need a disco ball!"? No, just me?

Turns out that mirror tiles belong on everything from the dance floor to shoes!

It's easy to create some dance club worthy footwear using mirror tiles and the familiar swirl pattern of a disco mirror ball.

Make disco ball shoes easily with just a couple supplies and a lot of time--the perfect mirror mirror foot wear.

But be warned, disco mirrors on short boots take forever.

This craft is tedious and long--it cannot be an urgent order--maybe pick some open square toe heels to start--they will be much faster.

Proceed with caution--prepare for working a long time.

You have been warned.

No, really. I wanted to hire out the second shoe.

The first shoe took me 4 hours and 15 minutes to completely cover in mirror tiles...but it felt much longer.

Thankfully because I got the pattern hashed out on the first shoe, the second one only took me 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Still, so long.

Also, I destroyed my fingernails in the process too from all the sticker peeling, gluing and separating of tiles.

But these disco ball overshoes baddies are worth the 8 hours of my life.

Look at that sparkle and shine--the visual effects are on point!

Supplies Needed to Make Disco Ball Shoes:

Old Shoes in need of upcycling (make sure they are comfortable shoes)
Mirror Tiles (I used about half of these--and still have tons for other projects)
Beacon Adhesives Gem Tac
Cricut Hand Tools (I used the hook and spatula to move tiles around)
Time, lots of time...maybe an audio book or a long podcast

Disco mirrors are awesome for all kinds of crafts, mirror shoes are just the beginning! You could use acrylic mirror tiles instead of glass so you don't end up with broken glass shoes if you know you'll be dancing or wearing them a lot. (I'm old so mine get minimal wear)

Step 1: Old Shoes

Find a pair of good quality shoes that you love the way they look but they are in need of an uplift.

I had these old fashion booties in the closet and the olive green suede was just something I never picked to wear but the actual finished color is just reflective mirrors so the base color really doesn't matter.

I love upcycling shoes, so I new I would find the perfect project for these shoes eventually.

Sure enough, when inspiration struck, these were waiting for me and the disco mirrors arrived in 2 days.

Step 2: Disco Ball Toe!

The beauty of these disco ball shoes, even though it does take longer than running straight lines, is the homage to the disco ball itself.

Begin at the big toe area of the shoe and apply some Gem Tac in a circular pattern.

Peel off individual mirror tiles and place them in a circle going out from the toe.

This truly makes the disco ball vibe with their stunning light effect!

Now the instructions are a bit like the project itself...monotonous.

It's really quite simple, just keep gluing down mirror tiles. I broke this process up into a few different sessions. Again, shoes of various sizes will take more or less time.

The mirror tiles have a sticker backing on them, but I found that I was peeling them off individually that I needed real adhesive that I knew wasn't going anywhere.

I followed the seamlines and the shape of my shoes as to where I placed the mirror tiles.

The big patches of flat shoe are the best because you can add the mirror tiles on the shoe by chunks and rows instead of each little individual 5mm mirror tile.

Even as I work, I can see the sunshining in on those shoes and making them dance all around the room!

The visual component is worth the work!

I broke up the gluing phase over the course of a few days...this is a great indoor craft project for bad weather days.

It was just too boring to do all in one sitting.

The heel of the diy disco shoes was a little tricky.

The sides were very even right up to the back.

Then I just wedged in the difference right down the center of the heel.

Step 3: Disco Ball Sides!

I wanted to recreate the circular pattern from the toe on both sides of the shoe.

This again was a little more tedious, but I was all in at this point.

The best part is that there is light at the end of the tunnel...and it's disco ball mirror glitter shoes light!

Again, just following the seams and lines of the shoe and fitting all those mirror tiles in place, don't worry about small gaps.

**Note: On this final day of mirror tile setting, I was wearing my Heman and the Masters of the Universe shirt...so the reflections on the shoe mirrors are very vivid compared to my normal black clothes wearing heart.

Finally. One shoe done. (lol, time of production 4-6 weeks)

I had renewed courage--kind of. I let shoe number 2 sit on the table for at least a week or two before even attempting to start.

Step 4: Second Disco Ball Shoe:

And then, like magic--or like the glimmer of sunshine on a disco ball shoe--I got the courage to sit down and finish the second shoe all in one sitting!

I worked so hard, starting right after lunch and finishing just in time so I could make dinner for everyone. Yay!

Seriously, my life is frantically trying to craft between making meals.

Repeat the mirror gluing process in the "mirrored" direction for the other shoe. Use the first shoe as a reference and it will go much faster.

**Also note: This is legit sun flare. and I absolutely love it.

Step 5: Drying

Whether you take days to finish tiling your mirror ball shoes...or if you finish them in one sitting...you'll need to let the glue dry completely.

I took some sunshiny pictures and then let these bad boys rest all night long to let the glue dry completely.

They have a smooth surface, but I am still careful not to touch the edges of the tiles, as they could give a little glass cut.

Just to recap on the mirror tile situation.

I used less than half of the box of mirror tiles.

I can now mirror tile all the things.

Preferably things that are flat, no curves and small...so I can just peel off sheets of mirror stickers and apply them quickly.

Other fun things to disco ballify: cowboy hat, piano, picture frame, serving tray, cell phone case--maybe...these do have sharp edges, home decor items, disco ball clothing and more!

PRO TIP: You can change the color of the mirror tiles using Alcohol Ink and a make up applicator. Perfect for different color jewel details.

Step 6: Laces

After a good night sleep, dreaming of disco dancing to my favorite Gloria Gaynor song "I will Survive", I was ready to finish these disco ball shoes off.

They had tie on laces previous to my mirror tiling.

I decided to just finish them off with elastic lace--the best part is the ease of slipping them on and off!

It's seriously all I use on shoes.
Since I was a little girl, like 20 years ago!
I simply remove all shoe laces and add elastic.
This way every shoe is a "slip on" shoe.
It's why I never taught my kids to tie their shoes.
Seriously.

So if you need to add the laces back in, do it now.

Then put on the shoes and start dancing!

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart.

These shoes.
I love them...made them for personal use only. I would not make these different people--even with service fees.

I wore them out to church, so for 2 hours. I did have one mirror tile pop off the seam edge, but that was easily fixed at home. I've worn them in a few different conditions and usually lose a mirror tile or two. Keep some mirrors on hand in case of breakage or missing tiles.

Did I received compliments on these shoes?
Oh yes I did!

So many compliments. Grown men loved them. Little kids loved them. Other women loved them too!
These are a conversation piece.

These disco ball queen shoes are not for the faint hearted--mirror glitter footwear demands attention.

They would be awesome with a whole mirror outfit!

I just really need to wear them to a club with lights--these example pictures barely do them justice.
They need a photo session all to themselves. For illustration purposes, they would look amazing with laser projectors aimed at them.

Phew, that's it!

How to Watercolor with Chalk Markers!

Learn how easy it is to watercolor using chalk markers on a chalkboard!

This technique is gorgeous and the perfect touch for a wedding, shower, birthday, party or any other occasion.

It takes just a few supplies to watercolor on chalkboards, and the best part is they wash away easily when the party is over!

I'm demonstrating a Watercolor Floral Wreath, but you can integrate the technique into anything you want!

The star of the show is Loddie Doddie Chalk Markers and Chalkboard.

I received these supplies in exchange for this post...but let me tell you, these are the best chalk supplies I've ever used...and I've used a bunch.

The chalk marker colors are bright and vivid. Plus there is a huge range of colors!

The chalkboard is high quality, easy to clean and doesn't leave phantom art behind.

Supplies Needed to Watercolor with Chalk Markers:

Loddie Doddie Chalkboard (I love the Farmhouse 18x22)

Paintbrush (#10 round is what I am using)
Palette (mine came in a 6pk at the dollar store)
Bowl and Regular Chalk for circle guide (if doing a wreath)

Step 1: Trace a Circle

If you are painting a floral wreath, like me, begin by tracing a bowl or plate with regular chalk on the chalkboard to make a big circle.

The beauty is, once the chalk marker is dry, the regular chalk can be wiped off effortlessly without damaging the watercolor chalk.

Step 2: Chalk Marker Paint

To start watercoloring with chalk markers, press the bullet tip of the chalk marker down into the palette. This will release some of the chalk paint.

I've found that the pastel colors dump their paint out much faster than the metallic ones, so tap slowly to control the flow.

Pick 2 colors of chalk marker that are a light and dark value to give your painting variety and depth.

If you are confident watercoloring, then have at it.

If you are trying this out for the first time, you will love how easy it is to paint roses.

Step 3: Watercolor Roses

Dip your paintbrush in the lightest color paint.

Then draw little half circle shapes beginning small and tight and then progressively bigger.

Add in some dark paint as you go.

Do not wash your brush between paint colors, let the 2 colors mix and blend together as you go.

Add more chalk paint to your palette as needed, but best not to have too much to begin with.

Paint 5-6 roses sporadically around the wreath.

Step 4: Watercolor Leaves

Same ideas as the roses, select 2 shades of green chalk markers and tap a little of the paint into the palette.

Then draw a simple half leaf brush stroke with one of the shades of green and finish the other side off with the other shade of green.

Add leaves sporadically around the wreath.

Step 5: Watercolor Berries

I love adding little blue "berries" in my arrangements, but this is your chance to get creative and add all kinds of foliage to your wreath.

Seasonal elements are lots of fun too! Like pinecones, evergreen leaves, etc.

Step 6: Watercolor Ferns

Ferns, palms or curling leaves are the perfect element to add to connect the wreath, but not make it look too perfectly circular.

They are easy to paint.

Just an alternating pattern of leaves on either side of a line.

Step 7: Watercolor 5 Petal Flowers

Add a few smaller flowers next.

These I did in just a light lilac color and did not add a secondary shade to them.

Get as creative as you want!

Step 8: Splattering Chalk

I love adding a little splatter at the end in yellow.

Just add chalk paint and a little water to the paintbrush and flick it all around.

This might not be your style.

Do what makes your heart happy.

Then set the chalkboard aside and let the chalk paint dry completely.

After it is dry, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to wipe away the regular chalk lines.

This is such a great technique because you can sketch out the design, guide lines, or even the hand lettering with chalk and then wipe it off easily after the chalk markers dry.

Add some calligraphy to your wreath if desired--this would be perfect for a welcome sign, wedding sign, or announcing a fabulous party!

I got married 23 years ago on Thursday and I would have loved having chalkboard wedding signs up at my reception.

That's it!

Once the party is over, it's a breeze to clean off your chalkboard art.

How to Make a Mountain Sunset Mandala

This mountain sunset mandala art is the perfect Summer craft!

It's got all the late night/camping/sunset in the mountains vibes.

I'm a beach girl in my mind, but my budget and location make me a mountain girl.

Let's make this gorgeous wall art piece in just a few minutes!

When my daughter was little she used to pray that the sky would be pink!

It was the cutest thing ever.

Every time we saw a pink sunset or puffy pink clouds, we'd tell her that her prayers were answered.

This mandala art is gorgeous, I don't know who designed it but I found it on a free file website.

Step 1: Laser Cutting

Begin by importing the mountain mandala file into your laser cutter and have it works its magic on the 3mm basswood circle.

If you have air assist that is helpful, but keep and eye on it anyway, as the lines are close in this pattern and can cause burning.

**WAIT: Don't have a laser cutter???

I know, not everyone can budget that in.

But this file will work on a Cricut or other electronic cutting machine too! You can cut it out of vinyl and stick it right on top!

The laser cutting took a about an hour.

I have my xTool set up in my craft room, so I just cleaned and organized while it was cutting.

It was productive time and I could still monitor the cutting.

Once the cutting is complete, there may be a few areas that the wood grain just didn't get cut all the way through.

Just use a hobby knife to carefully cut any parts that need assistance.

Then set the laser cut mountain mandala on the round pallet and admire.

I love the raw, natural wood look...but knew that some bright Plaid paint would make it pop!

Carefully set the mandala to the side.

It is extremely fragile, so do this full project in one day...don't just let it sit on your desk.

Step 2: Painting Pallet

Now it's the fun part--painting!

Squeeze out some paint on each section of the pallet.

I did a rainbow order sunset, so that each color would blend beautifully with the colors next to it.

Start with painting the lightest color first and fill the entire strip of the pallet.

In this case, the yellow.

Use long, broad strokes with a wide paintbrush for an even coating.

I only did one coat of paint.

Wipe the paintbrush off on a cloth or napkin until it's not full of yellow paint...but no need to wash it out with water yet.

Then move to the orange paint.

Allow some of the orange paint to mix with the yellow paint.

Again, daub your paintbrush to remove the excess orange paint.

Then move on to the pink paint, allowing some of the pink and orange to mix slightly where they meet.

Now go and wash out your paint brush.

Then paint the turquoise strip of the pallet.

At this point I knew I needed some green between the turquoise and the yellow and didn't want to just mix the colors, I needed a vibrant green.

So I pulled out the green paint and did a little strip between yellow and blue, blending them in as I did it.

I love the green in there.

It's not a full wood strip, but it's enough for the mountain scene. It does not need to be perfect.

Step 3: Paint Dry

My least favorite part of any craft is the drying time.

You can bust out the hair dryer and speed things up...or switch to another craft while you wait.

Which do you think I did???

Step 4: Glue

Now that the pallet is dry, it's time to glue the mandala to the pallet.

It's pretty intricate, so you have to work fast in order to put glue on the places that should be adhered before the rest of it dries.

Start the glue in the middle and work your way to the outside.

Not every part of it needs glue, but the peaks and edges.

Again, work quick.

Then place the laser cut wood mandala on the sunset pallet, lining up the top and bottom.

Step 5: Wood Bead Wreath

Thread the wooden beads on the 14 gauge wire, until you have enough to completely encircle the wood pallet.

Loop the ends of the wire together tightly and squish a bead over the top of the junction.

Then hot glue every other bead to the backside of the pallet.

This was enough for my wreath to hold together tightly.

You can hot glue every single bead if you want to be extra sure.

Now turn it over and it's...

Wait, there's a dilemma...

Do I add something else to it? I couldn't decide.

I typically like to have 3 elements on a project that give it texture, color and variety.

So I stuck a felt flower on it.

What do you think--do you like it better painted or natural? With the beads or without? With the flower or without?

Ultimately, I decided I liked it much better without the felt flower.

So I removed it and then it was ready to hang up.

It might be your vibe to add a bunch of flowers, feathers and even macrame cord to your mountain mandala--dress it up however you like!

That's it!

Overall, I am super pleased! I think it just radiates everything fun about Summer.

I feel camping, early mornings and late nights, a mountain lake...everything.

I love the natural wood that just pops on top of the vivid bright paint colors.

It screams and yet it's peaceful!

I love it--happy Summer crafting!

Scrabble Tiles Family Name Framed Word Art DIY

Scrabble! Do you like playing Scrabble? I love this game, it's one of my favorites. I love spelling and word games. However, no one likes to play them with me--haha. This is the solution!

Make a custom piece to hang in your home or give as a gift. Make one for grandma and grandpa with all the grandkid names. Do your family names fit in a scrabble layout?

We did 3 sets of family names and were able to work out each family pretty quickly. I don't have any hints on making it easier.

Begin by sketching out on paper the best way to arrange the letters. My cute friend bought a Scrabble game at the thrift store to make a family name piece for a friend.

Then she created one for her family. The leftover pieces came to me...but there were not the letters I needed. Easy fix!

You will need:

Scrabble Tiles
Antique White and Territorial Beige Apple Barrel Paint
Black Apple Barrel Paint
Small Paintbrush
Palette
Frame with Cardboard Backing
Scrapbooking Paper
Hot Glue/Gun

Step 1: Arrange Pieces

Begin by finding all the pieces for the names you'd like to place. Then start playing around with them and seeing how they fit together. Surprisingly, this did not take that long for me to do...so fingers crossed that it's an easy fit for you too!

Cheater Tip

If you are like me, and don't have the letters you need, just turn the tile over and paint your own letters right on the tile. Here's the basic shapes and the number value.

Step 2: Prep Frame

After the tiles are set up and ready to mount to the frame...remove the glass from the frame and place the scrapbook paper into the frame with the cardboard backing.

Step 3: Prep Paper

Use adhesive tape to secure the scrapbook paper to the cardboard. Set up the scrabble arrangement on the top of the paper.

Step 4: Glue Pieces

Line all the pieces on the paper so they fit in the frame correctly. Then pick one up at a time and place a dot of glue on the back of the tile, starting with the top pieces. Then place them on the paper.

Repeat the gluing process until each scrabble letter is securely placed.

Hang up somewhere the kids can see their names! Even though I have teenagers, my kids have loved this!

Mother's Day Heart Pop-Up Card DIY with Cricut Maker

Hi friends, I'm so excited about this amazing pop-up card DIY. Have a Happy Mother's Day--and celebrate with this cute and simple card DIY.

I designed this heart pop-up Mom card in Cricut Design Space™ so that you can make one for your mom in less than 15 minutes with a Cricut--it's perfection!

Here's the Cricut Design Space Project and the full step-by-step tutorial!

Pop-up cards are so much fun and a handmade card is a great gift.

You expect traditional greeting cards and then there's a surprise inside!

Paper crafts are my favorite and they are so much easier using a Cricut Maker, Cricut Joy, silhouette cameo or other Electronic Cutting Machine.

The card template is designed with Cricut Design Space and the free pop up card pattern is available for personal use.

Supplies Needed for Mother's day Pop-up Card:

Cricut Scoring Wheel
Cricut Brand Natalie Malan's Divine Peonies Deluxe Paper
Gray Cardstock
This Cricut Design Space Project
Double sided adhesive

Step 1: Patterned Paper

I love this watercolor flower paper, it's so pretty.

I picked a light gray cardstock to go with it...although any paper can be substituted for it.

Once the svg project is in Cricut Design Space, see which piece of paper the software has you start with first...it's not always the same.

Then mount that paper on the Cricut mat...I typically use the light weight adhesive one with paper.

Step 2: Scoring Wheel

You will use the scoring wheel first...I don't know if this will work with the scoring stylus...if you try it, come back and leave us a comment!

Install the scoring wheel into the holder and place the paper on the mat.

Follow the CDS directions, they vary in order between devices.

The machine starts with scoring and ends with cutting...if you decide to customize your card with text layers, you can add those in and use the Cricut pens to write them in...it's just a blank card svg file.

Step 3: Cutting Blade

Once the scoring is done, insert the fine point blade without kicking the mat out of the machine.

Then press the go button for the Cricut to move right into the cut layers of the fun fold cards.

The Cricut will cut out the lovely card with the center score line and a heart to match.

I used the patterned paper for the front of the card and the gray paper for the inside of the card.

Step 4: Repeat

Then place the plain cardstock on the mat and insert the scoring wheel again.

The Cricut will score the center line and the lines for the heart.

Then install the fine point blade and let the machine cut out the rest of the greeting cards cut lines and simple pop up pieces.

Step 5: Adhesive

Now just a quick assembly process of the card making tutorial.

Use some double sided adhesive to adhere the layers--I wouldn't use craft glue because it can cause the paper to dry unevenly.

The patterned paper peeks through the cut out of the plain paper.

Begin by folding both of the cards in half on the score line.

Then fold the heart back over the card on the score lines...if you have a bone folder that can help give it those crisp sharp fold lines.

Open the card and pop the heart through so it stands out.

Then open the card and place it face down on the table, this is a great help when applying the tape runner.

Next, use the double sided adhesive and add some tape to the back of the card...everywhere except the HEART shape...I may have gone a little adhesive heavy--but it's so much fun!

Fold the watercolor patterned paper card in half.

Then place the taped card inside the watercolor patterned paper card.

Line the fold lines up carefully and press securely.

The reversible watercolor paper is perfect to peek through in the M's and the back of the heart.

It looks fabulous--making your own pop up card is awesome!

This card tutorial can be scaled down or up to make it different sizes.

It's ready for a personal note written inside...or left as a blank pop-up box card statement.

Perfect size, fits in a standard card or A2 envelope.

This gorgeous card is definitely made for mom and a happy mother's day, but you could remove the M's on the free svg files layout and used for a happy anniversary or for a handmade birthday greeting card.

I was with my mom and she taught me how to fold the paper and draw out the shape and then cut it with scissors.

How to Make Giant Coffee Filter Flowers Hand Dyed DIY

Learn how to make giant coffee filter flowers that are hand dyed, the perfect DIY.

Make these diy coffee filter flowers for party decorations, backdrops, events, a baby shower, weddings, or just home decor!

Coffee filter crafts are an inexpensive craft and perfect for a fun Springtime project!

Easy Coffee Filter Flowers:

Bright colored giant flowers are my favorite!

I am super allergic to real flowers, so I can't have them in my house--seriously, I will come down with flu-like symptoms, it's so awful.

Instead, I make roses and flowers out of paper--this is my latest and most favorite!

Make a giant hand dyed coffee filter flower with just a couple of supplies.

This giant paper flower measures 16 inch square.

Paper roses are perfect for a single statement flower...or make a bunch for a flower wall display, perfect for parties, weddings, giant bouquets or other over-the-top events!

This stunning flower has 115 coffee filters, dyed by hand with bright vivid colors, in fluffy light layers.

Paper flowers would make a great Mother's day gift too.

They use very simple supplies; basket coffee filters, some food colouring and a little drying and dying time.

I learned how to make three-dimensional flowers out of paper back in high school art class. It's a good craft project for older kids.

Let me show you how to make a stunning coffee filter flower.

Then get creative and make coffee filter butterflies in the colorful flowers.

These watercolor coffee filter flowers have layers of coffee filters and a pop of color!

Supplies Needed for Giant Coffee Filter Flower:

115 Coffee Filters Per Flower
Gel Food Coloring
Water
Stapler Pliers and staples
Plate or a large container
Wax Paper or Plastic Table Cloth

Follow along with these simple steps!

Step 1: Dying the Coffee Filters

Before starting the flowers--do the prep work, set up your work surface.

Place a piece of wax paper or plastic tablecloth over the table.

Begin by pouring about 1/8 cup of water on a shallow plate.

Add a half teaspoon of food coloring in your desired color--begin with a few drops of food coloring.

The more food coloring you use, the more vivid the color will be.

I used Gel Food Coloring and that did not fade as much as water based food coloring or washable markers.

Mix the water and coloring together.

Take a small stack of coffee filters and fold them in quarters and hold on the center of the filters.

Then dip the bottom of the filters into the colored water.

The coffee filters will soak up the food coloring.

Then lay the coffee filters on the wax paper or plastic tablecloth for drying.

Repeat for multiple colors. Let the coffee filters dry completely...about 8 hours or overnight.

Now the coffee filters are ready to form into a stunning rose or other great ideas.

Coffee Filter Flowers with Markers:

You can do this technique, although not quite as vibrant, with markers.

Get a handful of bright markers.

Place a coffee filter on a sheet of wax paper.

Color the coffee filter with colored markers...making scribbles or any design to achieve the desired effect.

Then spritz lightly with a spray bottle and watch the colors spread around like liquid watercolors.

Let them dry.

Step 2: Building the Coffee Filter Flower

Start to build the rose from the center out of the colored coffee filters.

Decide what color scheme you want your final piece to be and think of each section as a single rose petal.

Create the center:

Begin by layering yellows and oranges in a stack of 5 coffee filters then cut them in half.

For the first layer we just need a half circle to create the center of the flower.

Staple the corner and roll the center pile in a cone shape, keeping the edge rolling across the curved part of the coffee filter for make petal shapes.

Then staple the cone right at the very bottom to hold the center together.

You could use hot glue but it would take a bit longer and I wouldn't do it that way with kids.

There may be other ways to make easy coffee filter flowers with floral wire or pipe cleaner or even wooden skewers.

Build the Petals of the Rose:

Now build the petals of the rose by stacking 5 coffee filters and folding them half.

Then place the rose center on the petal (folded coffee filters).

Roll up the flower petals around the base of the flower center and staple together.

Repeat the process with another stack of filters folded in half rather than cut this time.

This second set will overlap slightly around itself after wrapping and stapling.

Small flowers could be made with just a few rows after the first layer and they would fit on a wooden dowel or green fuzzy sticks really nicely.

You could make a full bouquet...or do what I did and make large flowers!

Make Beautiful Flowers Bigger:

Repeat the process for the additional petal layers.

The center will get bigger and bigger, making the petals fit differently.

Just staple them on the sides and then wrap and staple the other side.

Watching the rose bloom is so rewarding!

If you are making a photo backdrop or a bouquet, make roses of all different colors and sizes.

You could also use fewer coffee filters or make a different type of coffee filter flower--get creative!

Layer in new colors of dyed filters to add dimension and variety.

Continue to staple petals around the rose.

I begin with the pinks, reds and oranges and then finished off my rose with teals and greens.

Decide how you want your rose to look and go for it!

You could do the same technique with layers of tissue paper if you need to book low-mess crafts for a classroom activity.

I love the fluffy layers of coffee filters on this rose.

This is my favorite time of the year to make gorgeous coffee filter flowers.

Build up the petals on the previous petals until you are satisfied with the size.

My rose is 16 inches square and about 6 inches tall.

I love it! It used 115 coffee filters.

It would look absolutely stunning in all white...or with gold painted edges!

Here's the backside of the rose, you can see how the petals build up on the previous ones.

The petals make it easy to hang up the rose on a command hook.

I love the watercolor look of the petals.

This size of coffee filter flower would be a little too big for craft sticks and floral tape...but you can scale them down to your desired size and create your own flowers for a bouquet or backdrop.

I absolutely love how this flower turned out!

It's so fun to finish that last step and enjoy the masterpiece.

You can attach a piece of wire to the back for easy hanging as well.

Sadly, I ran out of coffee filters and couldn't make more.

But I love how this turned out!

I'm planning on doing a bunch in white for a classy backdrop too--I need an industrial size package of coffee filters!

Now make a wall full of fluffy, brightly colored coffee filter roses!

SPRING HOME DECOR DIY:

This brightly colored painted sign is perfect for butterfly collectors, without the need of real butterfly specimens, and a great addition to any Spring home decor.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR BUTTERFLY SPECIMEN ART:

STEP 1: TAPE EDGES

To give the specimen wall art the look of a black frame, tape off all the edges with 1 inch painters tape.

I did think about painting the edges afterwards, but loved seeing the smooth, natural wood peeking through...but paint it at the end, by taping off the inside of the lines, if you like that look.

STEP 2: PAINT

Next, I did a thin layer of paint in the lightest blue in the Solar Brights set, Kiddie Pool.

The paint is creamy and easy to paint, free from chunks and works great.

POUROUS WOOD!

The coverage is actually really great, but the wood surface I am painting on is very real, natural and pourous...so the first coat of paint went on like a wash or a stain, leaving the wood grain showing.

Which I love!

If you aren't a fan of the natural wood showing through the paint, leave the tape on and paint it a second coat after the first dries.

The first coat will act as a sealer and barrier against the wood, so the second coat will give that full coverage look.

Allow the paint to dry a few minutes, but not completely, then peel off the tape.

By peeling the tape off while it's still a little wet, it prevents pulling off the paint in big patches when removing.

See, crisp painted tape lines!

STEP 3: TEXTURE PASTE

I've had the BEST success using stencils with texture paste.

It seems like even with the best adhesive stencils, paint creeps under the edge and makes a bit of a mess.

I have no issues using texture paste, so I highly recommend it!

TEXTURE PASTE RECIPE:

4 Parts Cornstarch
3 Parts Matte Mod Podge
2 Parts Paint

I like matte finish Mod Podge because it doesn't add additional shine to the finish.

Any Mod Podge will work though.

I began by mixing about 4 tablespoons of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of Mod Podge in one large cup with a palette knife.

It's not an "exact" measurement, so mix it up until it is smooth and creamy like warm honey.

The cornstarch is the wonder material here, it's so smooth and does not give the mixture a grainy feel.

If it feels too thick and difficult to stir, go ahead an add a bit more Mod Podge, but a little goes a long way in the cornstarch.

Now use a palette knife to scoop the texture paste mixture into 10-12 small cups, one for each paint color you are planning on using for the butterfly specimen art.

And now add the Martha Stewart paint into each cup, about a teaspoon or two of the paint, is enough to color the mixture in a bold way.

I just used 10 colors, this seemed like plenty for this project.

There's probably as much paint in these little cups as there is the texture paste mixture.

Again, it's not science, just mix them up until the paint is mixed in the paste and smooth.

I love this set of Martha Stewart paints, they are my favorite colors!

Plus, it's Multi-Surface, which means you can use it on so many different projects, it's the one size fits all paint!

STEP 4: STENCILS

Now get the Flora and Fauna stencil kit out.

The stencils are laser cut and mounted on plastic, with a sticky adhesive backing.

There's a set of 3 butterflies, and you can keep them all together if desired, but I am cutting them apart for this project.

Place a stencil down on the painted wood surface, the adhesive holds it in place but does not damage the painted wood.

Then use a palette knife to add some of the texture paint to the top of the stencil.

Repeat adding paint across the top section of the butterfly stencil.

Then add the next color across the middle of the butterfly stencil...try not to add too much paint, once it's on the stencil it mixes in with the other colors and is therefore, not reusable.

Finally add the third or last color.

Some of the butterflies I did with only 2 colors, some with 3...it's totally up to you.

Pick colors that blend well together, like colors that touch on the color wheel are great options.

Colors that are opposites can turn into more muddy colors, so just use caution.

Now use the side of the palette knife to gently scrape up the excess paint, so the paint is level with the stencil.

Wipe the excess paint on a paper towel or disposable cloth.

Then repeat, lifting up the excess paint.

Then lift up the stencil, wipe it off with a paper towel or baby wipe and wash it off in the sink.

Gently pat dry and the adhesive backing will sticky back up, ready to use again.

If by chance you got any of the texture paint off the edges of the stencil, just clean those up with a baby wipe and move on to the next butterfly specimen stencil.

Repeat adding butterflies, dragonflies and bees to the specimen art.

Mix the colors and have fun blending and stenciling.

Use the stencil and then clean it off immediately, then it's ready to use again and again.

Once you are done with a stencil, replace it on the plastic backing sheet for using another day.

The dragonfly takes up more real estate on the board than the butterflies, so adding a bee in there helps give a little change up in sizes.

Once you are done, set the board aside, laying on a level surface to dry completely.

The texture is smooth and raised off the surface of the board like embossing.

I love how the colors blend together just a little bit where they meet.

It's such a fun way to do specimen artwork--no real insects needed!

No real butterflies were harmed in the making of this new art for my mantle!

I love how the texture, colors and paint looks on this smooth wood surface, it's perfection.

Martha Stewart has made it so easy to be successful with this project because the stencils give a flawless print every time!

A little practice needed, but anyone can get the hang of it really quick.

DIY HELLO SIGN:

Let's finish off this Spring Mantle with a little Hello sign using my 2 favorite Martha Stewart paints in the Solar Brights pack, Party Streamer and Aqua.

Plus the 2 foam pouncers from the stencil kit.

Use a paper plate, piece of wax paper, junk mail, palette or something similar to daub the paint in.

The pouncers make painting this little hello sign take less than a minute with no need for delicate brushwork.

Just dab the foam pouncer across the top of the word until sufficiently pink...or Party Streamer.

Repeat the process, using the second pouncer, with the aqua paint, filling in the bottom half of the word hello.

Then clean out both foam pouncers and let them dry for another day.

The foam pouncer paint application gives a little texture to the finished product, but I think it's perfect paired with the textured specimen wall art.

This little hello gives a big emphasis on a fun, new, Spring home decor mantle, entry table or wall art.

BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR ART:

I love how bright and vibrant this art piece turned out!

It's easy to make your own, and the Martha Stewart line from Plaid does all the guess work for you!

Just get the surface, a paint pack and a stencil set and have a blast!
