Exciting news! Sceptre have published a début novel-in-verse which promises to put an end to one of the greatest literary mysteries, that of whether playwright Christopher Marlowe wrote Shakespeare's plays.

Publishing director Carole Welch bought world rights to The Marlowe Papers by Ros Barber from historical fiction specialist Rupert Heath. The book looks at the controversial life and death of Elizabethan poet, spy and heretic Marlowe, and answers the question of whether he died in a tavern brawl in 1593, or whether he lived on and wrote the plays attributed to Shakespeare.

Welch described it as "one of the most unusual and exciting débuts to have crossed my desk in years," and said the work was "as vibrant, gripping and clever as a work by Marlowe himself. It's an astonishing achievement."

Barber has written three poetry collections, with her latest, Material, published by Anvil in 2008. Her short fiction has been published by Bloomsbury and Serpent's Tail. Infact the Marlowe Papers won the 2011 Hoffman Prize even before it was published this year in 2012. And with signed books already fetching £100 on AbeBooks this is set to be an all time classic!

The Next Big Thing Since Spiderman?

Do you remember last year when Entertainment Giant Disney announced that it was going to buy Marvel and take over ownership of over 5,000 characters including Spiderman and X-Men? Soon after there was a record breaking sale of the first ever Spiderman comic. It would be amazing to have the insight to invest in something like that…
Well now a fabulous new comic book series has been launched in 2010. Imagine a Bogart and Bacall movie recast with Laurel and Hardy. Dressed in dog suits. That's not really quite what Good Dog, Bad Dog is like but still, imagine. Good Dog, Bad Dog, meanwhile, is a knockabout comic noir adventure comedy full of slapstick humour, terrible puns and exciting action. It's inspired by all the old black and white film noirs that we all love but it's unpretentious fun rather than arty homage (though hopefully with a touch of class about it). Comics guru Paul Gravett praised its "snappy patter and clever twists" and called it a "punchy, fast-paced ... witty yarn" and that's pretty much what Dave Shelton was aiming for. It stars canine detectives Kirk Bergman and Duncan McBoo fighting crime in their home city of Muttropolis (I did mention the terrible puns didn't I?) as they tackle villains such as evil Wah Wah Johnson and thuggish Pug Ugly, trade lines with femme fatale Fifi La Confiture and occasionally disguise themselves in unconvincing beards. It's daft exciting fun and it's got milkshakes in it: what more could you want?

Today Doodled Books has a pre-publication exclusive. Lyme Hall is a sensational new self published book by Stuart Webb. The book is going to be released in the coming months and to celebrate an ultra rare set of chapter samples are available only at Doodled Books. These samples are subtly different from the final book as they are from the proofreading/typesetting stage. They are signed, dated, numbered and pre-publication dated. Infact if you look closely they are dated 2009!
Recently Lyme Hall was featured in The Book and Magazine Collector in December. Journalist Jonathan Scott chose the title as one of the New Wave of New Collectables. As you know Stuart Webb is an award winning author of short stories. He famously helped a number of up-and-coming authors to realise their dreams such as Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams to name but a few. So these samples could become very collectable.
