As you all know, we stand behind the lineage and health of all of our home-raised puppies. However, we want to maintain the high level of quality of the dogs we are breeding, so by increasing testing, heritage won’t be the only thing we are relying on.

In addition to the PennHip scores, which are official at 6 months of age, we are adding the OFA Hip & Elbow Preliminary screening which is completed around a year old. OFA Hip & Elbow Testing will also be completed at 24 months of age.

What is OFA Hip & Elbow Testing?

The OFA Hip & Elbow Testing is a non-invasive screening. It requires radiographs to be taken by the veterinarian and submitted to The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to review. And, the OFA assigns one of seven categories to the describe the joints: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, Severe.

(Look at those cute hips & elbows!)

Why focus on the hips & elbows?

Hip and elbow dysplasia is a complicated, multifactorial disease. Defined as a looseness in the joint, dysplasia causes the junction of two bones to wobble and be unstable. For instance, in the ball and socket of the hip joint (where the head of the femur and the acetabulum, or pelvis, join together) the socket needs to be deep enough to cover the ball without it slipping around. A shallow socket causes instability. This instability leads to bone-on-bone rubbing and intense pain. The friction of bone-on-bone rubbing erodes away the cartilage once cushioning the joint and leads to arthritis, or inflammation of the joint.

By testing our breeding males & females, and only using those in our line that receive top categories, we significantly decrease the chance of Doodles of NC puppies developing hip and/or elbow dysplasia.

(Yes we know this X-ray isn't of hips & elbows, but look how many precious goldendoodle puppies are in our sweet Lucy's belly!!)

Other Factors Affecting Hip & Elbow Formation

Studies do show that heritage is not the only cause for developing hip and/or elbow dysplasia.

For several weeks after birth, puppies must be provided good surfaces during development for hip and socket formation. For this reason, we use dura whelp pads which provide traction and solid surfaces.

And, in addition to verifying a puppy’s parents are OFA certified, you will still need to keep your dog at an ideal weight; use portion control and moderate exercise, and feed large breed puppy food to your golden doodle puppy. We recommend Fromm Puppy Food with an explanation as to why here.

With the increased cost associated with OAF Hip & Elbow Testing, puppies being sent home starting January 2020 will be $2500. Since large breeds are more susceptible to various forms of dysplasia, we believe the added level of security on your future puppy’s long term health (and comfort) is well worth the slight increase price upfront that could save thousands in veterinary bills in the future!

Please reach out with any questions on the OFA Hip & Elbow Testing, or any other questions related to goldendoodles. As you know, we are here for you all for the life of your pet and welcome any questions or concerns!

Happy doodling!

Can chances of Cardiomyopathy in dogs be reduced by dog food brand?

Recent studies have shown a new trend of large breed dogs having cardiomyopathy (enlargement of the cardiac walls) that is not typically seen in dogs. We felt it was in our best interest, as responsible breeders, to complete our own research and determine any proactive steps we could take to set our Doodles of NC line up for continued impeccable health.

What causes cardiomyopathy in dogs?

The leading theory in the cause for cardiomyopathy is people feeding their dogs a grain free diet. Believe it or not, nearly EVERY brand available is now grain free.

We have always believed in the importance of feeding good, quality food, which is why we used to feed Acana. However, like many other brands, Acana removed all grains from their ingredients list leaving their carbohydrates to be gleaned from sweet potatoes and rice.

Benefits of Fromm Gold Dog Food

After much research, we landed on feeding our line of golden doodles Fromm Gold Puppy and Fromm Gold Adult for several reasons.

Fromm pulls from a variety of protein sourcesFromm uses whole barleyFromm adds taurine (which is important in cardiac health)ALL ingredients are sourced from the USALL mineral and vitamins come from EuropeFromm is produced and packaged in the Midwest, in their own manufacturing plants

Overall, we are very thankful that Dr. Jernagen brought this to our attention and wanted to pass this along to all of you, our wonderful Doodles of NC families!

Whether you decide to switch to Fromm Gold Puppy/From Gold Adult, or not, we hope that sharing the decision we made, after extensive research, will help you make an informed decision for your own fur baby.

If you’d like to complete your own due diligence, here are a few resources we found helpful:

Fromm Gold Life-stage and Lifestyle Dry Recipes - Fromm Family FoodsFromm Dog Food Reviews, Coupons & Recalls 2016Questions You Should Be Asking About Your Pet’s Food – Clinical Nutrition Service at Cummings SchoolFromm Gold Dog Food | Review | Rating | Recalls

Purchasing Fromm Gold Online

We’ve added links to both Fromm Gold Puppy and Fromm Gold Adult to our Amazon store. All worthy of celebration! But, here’s a surprising fact - more dogs run away on July 4th than any other day of the year. All because of fireworks!

So, how can you keep your dog safe this July 4th?

With enough time, you can recondition your dog to associate the loud booms to a pleasurable action. By playing the recording of firework sounds repeatedly before going outside, meals, or even snuggle/playtime, your dog can learn to look forward to what follows fireworks.

Some canine behavioral experts, like Cesar, recommend playing the recorded sound of fireworks for your dog at an increasingly louder volume for three or four months.

Since we are only a few days out from July 4th, let’s keep that approach in mind for next year. There are still some ways to help your dog prepare for this year’s festivities.

1) Location.

If your house backs up to the city’s display of fireworks, perhaps relocate your dog for the holiday - a friend or family member’s house, or even a doggie day care. Just be sure to acclimate your dog to the new location a few times leading up to the day.

2) Security.

When removing your dog from within earshot of fireworks just isn’t feasible (keep in mind dogs hear noises 4x the distance of humans!) then provide a small, safe place for them to hunker down. For many, this may be their crate with their favorite toys away from windows. For others, this may also involve the use of a “Thundershirt.”

Contrary to popular use, Thundershirts should be placed on your dog prior to them showing the emotional triggers of stress like heaving panting and pacing. Thundershirts should keep them from getting anxious, but can have a tough time calming down an already stressed out dog.

Here is one of our top picks you can order from the Doodles of NC Amazon Store.

3) Background noise.

If your dog is used to noise around the house (think TV, music, kids, etc.) then packing up and heading out to a July 4th party leaving them all alone in a quiet house can be a recipe for disaster. In addition to creating a secure space for them, put on some background noise to entertain their mind.

4) Exercise.

Take your pup out for a long walk/run, or go throw the frisbee. Do anything in your power to help them relieve extra energy that afternoon. Your dog is much more likely to be relaxed that evening if they are exhausted from the day's events.

5) Remain Calm.

Pass along the message through your tone and body language that everything is just fine. Showing anxious, worried thoughts on your face and through your voice communicates a high energy to dogs. If you make a big deal out of the fireworks, then they are going to pick up on those cues and become concerned along with you.

This can be a tricky balance if you have young ones at home. Your excitement to show your kiddos the fireworks, can rub off the wrong way on your dog. So, keep that in mind and perhaps attend a local viewing of the fireworks elsewhere in the city.

We hope these 5 tips will help you manage your dog’s stress this fireworks season, but more importantly keep your dog safe! Feel free to message us with any additional questions as we are here for you for the life of your pet.

How often should you groom & bathe your Goldendoodle?

Known for their hypo-allergenic fur, the Goldendoodle’s coat is why many seek after the breed. For Goldendoodle puppies, this poses a challenge.

If not brushed frequently, the puppy’s non-shedding fur gets matted in with the adult fur at the follicle, causing discomfort, which translates into excessive scratching. Dogs, in general, have sensitive ears. If their ears start emitting a strong odor, or your dog scratches their ears and whines, we recommend a trip to the vet to check for an infection.

Mini goldendoodles can easily be bathed in the kitchen sink. For larger Goldendoodles a walk-in shower or bath tub with a shower wand works beautifully. Lather twice and rinse thoroughly! Then towel dry and brush the coat.

To speed up the drying process, a hair dryer on a low, cool setting, can speed up the process.

Trips to the Groomers

A goldendoodle's fur grows quite rapidly. We encourage a few trips to the groomers a year to help trim up their coat (especially around their eyes) to help minimize madding of the fur and healthy coat growth.

And, one last tip!

Let’s face it, pollen can irritate even the strongest of eyes! If your Goldendoodle ends up with the pink/orange tear eyeliner, use an alcohol-free makeup remover wipe. It is gentle enough for their delicate skin, but also smells super clean and fresh.

We hope these tips & tricks help you keep your Goldendoodle cute, clean, and comfortable.

And, feel free to reach out to us with any other questions you have on providing the proper care for your Goldendoodle.

How big is a mini goldendoodle?

About the size of a watermelon, but a whole LOT lighter! The disposition of Goldendoodles makes them the perfect travel companions. Just last month, one of Keuckly's pups, Bowie, made headlines being carried by his mom, (Ahem...owner!) Danielle, through the busy LAX airport.

So, whether your travel is by car, train, or plane, we recommend adding these items to your packing list.

1) Seat Belts & Covers

Having your pup strapped in for the ride can not only protect them, but also you. Minimize wet noses bumping your arms for attention by having your dog bucked up in the back seat.

We've added our favorite seat belt to our Doodles of NC shop. The crash-tested Sleepypod ClickIt Car Harness is made of Ballistic nylon exterior construction and automotive grade seatbelt webbing. And, with 3-points of seatbelt contact, it disperses impact.

And, we love this inexpensive URPOWER seat cover that makes for easy clean up. Although doodles are a very low-shedding / non-shedding breed, rainy trips can make for a messy back seat!

2) Rest Stops & Leashes

Keep in mind how often your pet is let out for potty breaks at home. Be sure to plan in rest stops throughout the trip. Although you might make the whole trip, it's likely your pup can't.

While enjoying some fresh air, keep your dog on a tight leash. Even the most well-behaved dogs can get spooked by strange sounds in new places. So, to keep from adding time to your trip (and gray hairs to your head!!) while chasing down your dog, be sure to pack a good leash.

Our pick for travel collars & leashes are the weather-proof, nylon reflective collar and nylon leash with a hand loop offered by Pet Lover's Club. The reflection helps other vehicles spot you at night and the hand loops reduces the risk of dropping the leash if your pup starts to bolt!

3) Hydration & Food

What is the one thing you run back in the house to grab nearly every long car ride? For me, it is my bottled water. I can't fathom taking a long car ride without it!

Well, dogs can become dehydrated quickly as well. This is especially true during the heat of the Summer months, but the heat we pump out during the Winter sucks the moisture right out of the air! So, pack an extra bottle of water and a bowl for your pup. Keep in mind that you should be offering them water (and then a potty break!) every couple of hours.

These collapsable water & food bowls, with carabiner clasps make great options while on the road or camping. Collapse & slip them into a Gallon-sized ZipLock back and you can drop them in a suitcase, backpack, or the seat back in front of you!

Hope these three safety reminders help get you prepared for your holiday traveling. And, please add your additional traveling tips in the comments section below!

For more of our breeder recommended items, check out the Doodles of NC store.

Happy traveling!

Howl-o-ween Contest Winner Announced

The votes are in! However, dog breeds that shed less are more likely to be hypoallergenic. Why is this the case?Well, the protein expressed in a dog's saliva can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. So, what makes fur hypo-allergenic? Is it the fact that the fur is not shed at all?

Contrary to popular belief, all dogs shed. And why is that so surprising? People, cats, mice, even birds shed! However, dog breeds that shed less are more likely to be hypoallergenic.

Why is this the case?

Well, the protein expressed in a dog's saliva can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. Since the dog's dander and saliva stick to their hair, and breeds less prone to shedding do not release as much hair into the environment, "hypoallergenic breeds" typically shed less. However, protein expression levels play a major role and amount of shedding alone does not determine degree of allergic reaction. Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul, Chair of the Indoor Allergen Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology is quoted in U.S. News & World Report as saying, "Even if you get a hairless dog, it's still going to produce the allergen."

Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic?

Most allergen experts would not answer this question outright. They would probably say that the purchasing a Goldendoodle would have a higher probability of not causing an allergic reaction than a higher shedding breed.

Now, the reason behind the reduced shedding is all in the breeding. Poodles, a breed known for their "non-shedding" fur (which we now know is an anomaly) is crossed with a golden retriever (which is a highly shedding breed). The resulting F1 Goldendoodle (50% poodle & 50% golden retriever) sheds much less than a retriever, however it is likely to shed more than a poodle.

When an F1 Goldendoodle (50% retriever / 50% poodle) is cross bred back to a poodle the resulting F1B Goldendoodle (25% retriever / 75% poodle) sheds even less. Some even say their F1B Goldendoodle never sheds (again an anomaly).

So, if you, or a loved one, is in the search for a cuddly, hypoallergenic dog with a smart, trainable, loving personality, then an F1B Goldendoodle should top your list! In case you are in the market, we hope the answers to these 5 serve as a great resource for you!

1) How much is a goldendoodle puppy?

Believe it or not, cost is the #1 question asked. Doodles of NC’s standard fee for 8-week old puppies is $2,300. Now there is a LOT wrapped in to that amount, including a 1-year health guarantee, so we encourage you to take a look at our pricing page to learn more.

2) What size will a goldendoodle be?

We offer two distinct types of goldendoodles: F1-B Mini and F1-B Medium. Within these two categories a range of sizes exist. Typically males run a bit larger than females - even in the same litter.

Our F1-B Minis goldendoodles come from a miniature poodle dad and a F1 medium goldendoodle mama. Their puppies are expected to stay between 15 - 20 pounds; perfect lap dog size and compatible to most any living arrangement, including major cities.

Our F1-B Medium goldendoodles come from a miniature poodle dad and a F1 standard goldendoodle mama. Larger than the minis, these puppies are expected to have a full adult weight of 30 - 45 pounds. Might not seem like the perfect lap dog size in your mind, but their temperament certainly causes them to climb on up and snuggle when allowed. The goldendoodle’s low-shedding, hypoallergenic fur also makes snuggling that much more inviting!

3) What is the personality of a goldendoodle?

Such a great question! This one starts getting into the heart of why we breed this amazing breed. Being a hybrid, the goldendoodles pick up on the best traits of both breeds: the intelligence and trainability of the poodle and the loveable personality of the golden retriever.

Are they good with children and other pets?

I know, I know. We are sneaking in an extra question in here. But, the answer is - yes - and totally fits in with their personality. Goldendoodles are wonderful family pets, especially when introduced to children from an early age.

At Doodles of NC, we expose the puppies to children of varying ages during the first 8-weeks. Our two young daughters love toddling around with the puppies, but we also encourage children of various ages being introduced towards the end of their time with us.

And, the same can be said of other animals. Proper introduction in a controlled environment (ex. Leashes, open space) goes extremely well with goldendoodles. Their friendly, loving spirit transfers right over to your other fur children.

For more on the disposition of this non-aggressive, social, and athletic breed check out our blog article: What is the disposition of a Goldendoodle?

4) How are your puppies raised?

If there is a question we enjoy answering more than #3, it’s this one. All different types of breeding styles and preferences exist. Our philosophy stands firm that all of our breeding dogs live in either our home, or our guardian family homes, as a key member of the family.

Our puppy nursery is part of our home and allows 24/7 care. We bring all of our expecting mamas into our home to closely monitor their deliveries, as well as their care of the puppies. We recently documented the major milestones the puppies go through during the first 8-weeks of life on this page. So, we welcome you to check it out and see the precious puppies grow!

Most importantly, the round the clock care provides ample opportunities for us to photograph and the puppies’ growth to share with their forever families. Many a night is spent simply puppy gazing in our home, much like that of a newborn baby! Who needs a TV anyways?!

5) How quickly can we get a goldendoodle puppy?

I guess it make sense that this would be the last of our top questions; after hearing the answers to the top 4, everyone wants their puppy ASAP!

Being an in-home breeder that highly vets guardian family homes, our availability is slightly limited. We anticipate placing 35+ puppies with new families this year alone. However, we are blessed to be adding new mamas for 2018 litters (meet them here) to help increase supply to fill requests more quickly!

We are already filling our Spring 2018 master puppy waiting list. This gives you the opportunity to first right of refusal when your name comes to the top of the list! So, if your heart’s set on a certain size, gender, color, etc. once you make it to the top, you retain your spot until your perfect pup is waiting.

To reserve your puppy, start by filling out our application today.

Have another question for our list? Should we keep an in-house stud? What size? Who should be the guardian parents? See...lots of questions needed answering. Well, once answers started surfacing, we recognized our top priority - controlling the “home” environment from as early an age as possible. One of the top benefits of being in-home Goldendoodle breeders, is we have intimate relationships with our dogs. They become family. Each of our new dogs deserve that same attention. Sure, this meant more waiting, but in the end we know it was worth it. From house training to command instruction, our guardian home parents have learned the personalities of our new breeding moms as they’ve grown up before our eyes. S
o, without further adieu, let us introduce Chloe & Lucy!

Meet the Goldendoodle Moms

These two sisters (yes - from the same litter in Ohio!!) live with the wonderful Baker family in Archdale, NC. Having the Bakers as guardians for these two has been such a blessing. Their two boys each have “their own” dog - as you can see pictured below.

Although the moms-to-be are both apricot, F1 standard Goldendoodles (and sisters!!) their appearance is as distinct from one another as their personalities.

Chloe

While Lucy is the laid back, easy going, cuddle type, Chloe’s energetic personality makes her the social butterfly at the park. Chloe’s poodle permed coat causes her hair to perfectly frame her eyes like a helmet protecting her for whatever adventure comes her way.

Lucy

Lucy’s fluffy coat matches her easy-going disposition; and her love for snuggling in with her bone of choice fits right in her preference in nap locations - your lap! Both moms are as sweet as can be, are well-behaved in real world settings (think car rides, dog parks, family vacations) and have intelligence beyond measure. We know Chloe & Lucy’s puppies will be adorable and cherished by our families on the 2018 reservation list! But, even with four Goldendoodle mamas expecting litters in 2018, our Spring 2018 reservation list is 50% full.

So, be sure to fill out our puppy application and get your deposit in! If you followed our how to prepare for you new puppy suggestions, then I’m sure you are well on your way to bonding together! We hope these 5 games provide hours of endless fun and training opportunities!

1. Hide & Seek

An old classic, with a twist. Either hide yourself or your puppy’s favorite new toy. While searching for you, use the command “come” to call them. Familiarizing themselves with your voice and this voice command is a win, win!

And, sniffing out their favorite toy fine tunes their seek & find skills. Next you will be able to call toys by name for them to find & drop in their toy box! Yes - dogs can clean up their toys just like children (maybe even more reliably!).

2. Exploration Stroll

Ok. I tried to make a fancy title. But, this is just going for a walk. Might not seem exciting for you, but providing opportunities to explore on the beach, around the neighborhood, or at the park is very stimulating for your pup.

A couple things to keep in mind. Dog trainers recommend a 4 to 6 foot lead to keep your pup save. And, keep the walk around 5 minutes per month (20 minutes for a 4 month old). Running should be on your pup’s terms as forcing a run before their joints have developed can cause damage.

3. Fetch

One the kiddos love to get involved in. Tune up your pitchin’ arm and burn some puppy energy. Keep in mind the weight of the toy being thrown. Small, lightweight, easy to retrieve toys like stuffed animals, are important at this age. And, avoid sticks; they can be tough on puppy teeth and when ingested wreck havoc on a puppy’s intestinal tract!

4. Swim

Just in time for summer! Most dogs love water. But, if your puppy is fearful at first, be sure not to force it. Panicking when water is involved can lead to a very scary situation.

Be sure to look into puppy life jackets if you are heading to a fast moving river or the ocean. The weight-free environment creates a great, low-impact workout for growing puppies. But, until your puppy proves proficiency in swimming stamina, be ready to jump in and play lifeguard!

5. Tricks

Wait, what? Teaching tricks is training, right? Well, to your puppy they are one in the same. So treat it like one! Get as excited to instruct them on “sit” and “stay” as … “wanna go for a car ride!” Learning these basic commands early will help your puppy stay safe when you venture into the real world.

Remember, puppies tire easily. To prevent exhaustion and overstimulation, take a break after 10 minutes of structured play. And, keep those treats close!

For more ideas on games that teach and engage your new puppy, reach out to us! The current litter has 8 puppies and the six names on the list select six of the eight puppies. It comes to your choice, but there are only two little girl puppies left. You had your heart set on a little boy Goldendoodle. So, with a master list, you can choose to wait for the next litter causing your name to rise to the top. Then you receive your pick of the litter the next time around because you now hold the top spot on the list.

When do you retire a breeding female?

Did you notice Bella’s name not mentioned as a breeding mom for 2018? Well, amidst a flood of requests for #BellaBabies, we are retiring Bella after her next litter in December. She has been an amazing momma to 44, F1-B Goldendoodle puppies already and we want to retire her with the dignity she deserves.

General standards exist for mandating when to stop breeding female dogs. Most kennel clubs require the mother to be under 8 years of age to register the pups, with the strictest standards being 5 years of age. Kennel clubs also limit the number of registered whelping litters allowed per female - ranging from 4 - 6 litters.

Age is another factor depending on the size of the breed. For smaller breeds, 5 years of age is the industry norm, where larger breeds may continue into age 6.

Most veterinarians advise retiring a dog after 4 litters. Just like with human babies, birthing and raising puppies is no easy feat! However, vets and breeders agree that dogs who have had complicated pregnancies should not be bred again (c-sections, stalled labors, still births, etc.).

Many breeders follow the signs from the mother. When they are nearing the end of their breeding life, their litters typically decrease in number. Watching the health and wellbeing of the mother between litters is a key to knowing when they should be retired.

At Doodles of NC, we take all of the research into consideration in making this tough decision. But, the ultimate deciding factor is the health and wellbeing of our mothers in determining if we should retire them early.

In Bella’s case, she has had 4 healthy pregnancies and shows no signs of slowing down! Her last litter was her largest of all with 11 precious, healthy red & apricot F1-B goldendoodle puppies.

While still a young mother, at just five years of age, Bella will enjoy the next years teaching other puppy moms how to care for their little ones, running around with our girls in the backyard, and snuggling up with us on the couch!

If you are contemplating adding a mini goldendoodle (15 - 30 pounds) or a medium goldendoodle (30 - 45 pounds) into your family during 2018, we highly recommend reserving your spot now!

The more time you have to plan for your puppy’s arrival, the smoother the transition home will be. Plus, the higher you are on the list, the more options you have in terms of color and gender of your little puppy blessing.

Hoping to have the honor of hand selecting a puppy for your family in 2018!

#Bellababy Goldendoodle Puppies Have Arrived!

We couldn’t be happier to share that our sweet Bella safely delivered 11 precious, healthy Goldendoodle puppies last evening. But, one of my favorite ones to answer is…

How do you know when a dog’s labor is starting?

The reason behind this being a favorite is all the memories flooding back of helping my mama Doodle through her natural deliveries. Although labor starts about 55 days after conception, the mama’s instincts start kicking in and they each display sure signs that puppies are about to appear.

When Bella is nearing labor she starts panting a lot, stops eating, goes out minimally and just wants to cuddle the day away. Bella started showing these signs Monday and then labored yesterday from 5:00am until 12:30pm. Coaching our Doodle mama’s through delivery is one of the most beautiful and remarkable experiences to share.

Healthy Pregnancy Monitoring

We err on the side of caution for our Doodle mamas and have regularly scheduled vet visits to track pregnancy progress. Here is a video from Bella’s ultrasound confirming pregnancy around 25 days post honeymoon.

Then, around 53 days after the honeymoon, we take our sweet mamas in for an X-ray. Being the most reliable way to count the number of puppies, this helps us prepare the supplies for the whelping box before their grand debut.

Take a look at Bella’s X-ray from Monday. Can you find the 11 puppies?

Knowing the number of puppies up front also helps us monitor the progression of labor and quickly pick up on complications should any arise.

We wouldn’t want our pregnancy tracking any other way! These checkpoints give us opportunities to share the exciting progress with our expecting doodle parents waiting to meet their Goldendoodle puppy for the first time.

Bonding moments after birth

Even in the midst of labor, Bella watches intently over her brand new puppies. If someone is missing she searches them out. Like when we remove a puppy for a weight check, her eyes stay glued to that newborn until we return it to the whelping box.

She also just lets them cuddle in for warmth and nurse for nourishment. For the first few days we even have to bring her water as she refuses to leave their side.

She is a great mama and certainly has a special glow about her this morning!

Overall, we try to make the whelping box and delivery room peaceful and calm for our Doodle mamas. How could we keep all this cuteness to ourselves?!

2) References, references, references!

One thing all new puppy owners love to do is talk about their newest addition. With that comes a plethora of people ready to share their experience with you. Sometimes they are even close enough to meet in person!

3) See pics of other puppies

Much like children, puppies from one mom to the next favor one another – coloring, coat texture, size, special markings, etc. Instagram is flooded with hashtags devoted to pup pics like #doodlesofinstagram. Check out pictures of our previous litters on Instagram and gain a preview of your anticipated puppy.

4) Health guarantees of the puppies

Most, if not all, Certified Puppy Breeders offer health guarantees, which relieves buyers of responsibility should any untreatable health conditions arise. At Doodles of NC, we are confident that our puppies will be healthy and happy when we send them home, so all of our puppies come with a 1-year Healthy Puppy Guarantee.

5) Timing of the pickup so you can prepare

If your family is like ours, there are busy seasons and times of rest. Selecting a puppy from a breeder allows you flexibility in coordinating the new puppy’s arrival with the best season in your lives, while giving ample time to prepare the welcoming party for their transition home. Training puppies takes a bit more time and energy in the first few months, but the time spent reaps benefits in the end!

6) Pick of the litter / know your order

Once on a waiting list, you will know your place in the “first come, first serve” process. Although being top on the list seems like the perfect place to be, it certainly makes for a difficult decision!! We anticipate having puppies each season this year, so reserve your spot on one of our waiting lists today!

7) Purchase another similar dog

After bonding with your precious pup you’ll start thinking of #2. Whether this is right away or years down the road, purchasing from a breeder allows the opportunity to purchase a similar dog – perhaps even a sibling!

8) Vet records

Meticulous records of veterinary care are the standard for Certified Puppy Breeders. If you live close by, you can keep the same vet for the life of your pet. Some breeders, like Doodles of NC, have genetic testing records on the puppy parents that can be shared with clients as well.

9) Shipping Available

Many certified breeders offer a shipping option for puppies. Be sure to do your due diligence on all shipping policies! The most comforting part of our stress-free, Air Delivery option is that the puppy never leaves the site of their Personal Puppy Attendant – from our house to our client’s arms.

10) Meet the pup’s parents.

Disposition, coloring, size, health – many traits and mannerisms get passed down from parents. When possible, we encourage our clients to meet their puppy’s parents. All of our puppy parents are outstanding canine citizens, so we never shy away from these introductions! Purchasing from a shelter or pet store does not give you this option. Keeping this list to 10 was a bit of a challenge, but we tried to keep our biased opinions out of the mix! Squeals of excitement and yelps of glee fill the air. But yet, these same Goldendoodles eagerly curl up with us on the coach and snooze away on a rainy afternoon.

So, how much exercise is right for a Goldendoodle?

As most of these seemingly “easy” questions turn out, the answer is - it depends. However, a blanket statement is that most people with a fenced in backyard will find that their Goldendoodle will get all the exercise they require. But, let’s dive deeper into this answer.

According to size

The first thing to consider when determining an exercise regimen is the size of your Goldendoodle. Standards run 45+ pounds, Medium F1-B Goldendoodles range from 30 - 45 pounds and Mini-Goldendoodles can be as small as 10 pounds at full adult weight!

Just like traveling a mile to an ant is like a person walking clear across the state of New York, mini goldendoodles require far less room for exercise than a standard.

Depending on age

The second thing to consider is the age of your Goldendoodle. Puppies through the first two years of life will crave more exercise time. So, aim for at least 15-30 minutes of exercise three times a day. But, as they age, this exercise time will change from playing catch and soccer to a gentle stroll around the block.

Personality factors

Lastly, each Goldendoodle has their own personality. As a breed they are eager to please and acclimate well to most any situation, so let your Goldendoodle live life with you.

Try out new things dog parks, lake trips, beach weekend getaways, or dog-friendly outdoor restaurants. The more they are around people, the happier your Goldendoodle will be!

With all this said, you’ll know you have found the right mix of exercise when they jump right up when you say, “Wanna go….” and you find them warming their favorite bed during downtime.

Regardless of how much time your Goldendoodle spends outdoors, make sure every moment is supervised - not to keep them out of trouble, but to keep trouble from finding them. Goldendoodles are a highly sought after breed, so keep a watch out for suspicious cars in the neighborhood. Your Goldendoodle will soon be like another member of the family though, so you will be watching out for them just like you would your own child!

If you have any additional questions for us about how to care for your Goldendoodle, please add a comment below or reach out on our Contact Us page!

A breeder’s secret to a clean Golden Doodle puppy nursery

Over the past couple years we’ve noticed an increase in clients asking how we keep our puppy nursery so neat and tidy. Even with Bella’s last litter of ten (10) goldendoodle puppies, the nursery was ready for stop-in visits at the drop of a hat.

What’s our secret?

Litter box training.

Yes, we realize we breed puppies, but contrary to popular belief litter boxes aren’t just a “cat” thing! In fact, litter boxes serve as a major milestone in successful house training.

Step 1 – Choose the “litter”

Let us save you some time (and mess)!! We use safe, non-toxic, paper-based pellets in our large litter boxes. They are super absorbent, tough on odors, and are easy to sweep up. Plus, our first puppies made it pretty obvious that newspaper was only good for shredding ... confetti party!!! ... and their beautiful red and apricot coats had so much black smut they could have passed as chimney sweeps!

Pellets are the way to go.

Step 2 – Surround the bedding

Soon after the puppies are born, we surround their bedding area with the litter boxes. As the puppies get their legs, they waddle (or fall) off their bedding pallet and the pellets offer a softer landing than the nursery floor. Plus, puppies piddle quite frequently. They prefer to piddle off their bedding, but don’t have enough stamina to make it across the floor.

Step 3 – Seek & Find

The next step is reducing the size of the area covered in pellets. The puppies have grown accustomed to the smell of the pellets and prefer doing their business in familiar territory. We reduce down to one litter box that is still close to the bedding pallet, but yet a few leaps away. This provides room for the rambunctious puppies to bound out of bed without tripping over their potty.

Step 4 – Privacy Corner

Right around six weeks the puppies are so accustomed to the litter box that they prefer it in the corner. The larger the playtime area the better! An added bonus is with the litter box smooshed in the corner, fewer pellets end up spilling on the floor.

The extra time, energy, and resources being invested in litter training our puppies are well worth it. Our goal has always been to breed healthy, happy goldendoodle puppies and help them transition well into their forever families.

By litter training our puppies, we help our clients minimize “accident” frustration and expedite the transition into outdoor potty training; the litter box provides a portable option to aid in those efforts.

Our clients boast about the ease of training their pups to use a natural area, or particular corner of the yard. We attribute that success to both the litter box training and our amazing clients who understand the importance of devoting time into properly training their goldendoodle pups.

If you have any additional questions about how we raise our puppies, feel free to post a comment below, give us a call, or reach out on our contact page!

2016 Recap and 2017 Projections for Doodles of NC

What a year! They make wonderful family pets and their hypoallergenic fur make them a top breed of choice among allergy sufferers.

Now before jumping into the specifics of the breed, we must mention that we are describing the innate behaviors of Goldendoodles as a whole. Just as with humans, environmental factors, learned behaviors, and character traits that get passed from parents can affect their offspring. So, when possible, inquire about the disposition of the puppy’s parents. If you are aware of any potential character flaws upfront you can catch them early and adjust training accordingly.

Speaking of training, Goldendoodles are eager, willing learners that crave a role to play. Paired with being on a mission to please, Goldendoodles are quite athletic. We’ve seen our puppies excel at a variety of athletic activities:

- ultimate frisbee- agility- flyball- hide-and-seek- water sports

And, if your family travels, your Goldendoodle will be happiest joining in on the adventures! Our clients send us pictures with their Doodles on the beach, in the boat, out at dinner, at the park...really just living life alongside their owners.

Now, with all this intelligence and athletic ability, the breed is prone to struggle with idleness. If not given a job, they will search out one to complete. So, during the puppy years, if you don’t want your shoes reorganized or the counters cleaned, make sure your Goldendoodle receives plenty of direction and interaction.

The non-aggressive temperament of Goldendoodles makes them mesh well with other pets. Finding a Goldendoodle sharing its bed with the family cat is no surprise. They enjoy the companionship and responsibility that comes with another “fur” dependent in the house.

Some other highly athletic breeds are also highly energetic. This is where Goldendoodles truly rise above the rest. With the breed spanning from 5 – 60+ lbs (depending on the size of the parents) they may not all be considered lapdogs. However, they will beg to differ. If allowed, your Goldendoodle will curl up with you on the couch and snooze the night away.

Over the past few years, we’ve stayed dedicated to in-home puppy breeding. So, we trust the F1-B Goldendoodles around our two young daughters. We truly love the breed and can attest to their remarkable disposition first-hand.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out in the comments section below or on FB if you have any follow up questions! But, before the belts are loosened and the afternoon naps set in, let’s remember why the seemingly harmless act of sharing table food could put your dog’s overall health in real danger. Aside from the side effects of encouraging bad begging behaviors and gaining extra weight (we can all thank these holiday meals for the extra pounds headed our way!) you may be shocked to hear how the following 10 food items could prove fatal to your pet.

1. Avocado The “good” fat turned “deadly.” Avocados contain an element called persin in their leaves, fruit, seeds and bark. Persin is extremely toxic to animals and leads to difficulty in breathing, severe congestion, swollen mammary glands, accumulation of fluid around the heart, and yes - even death. Keep that guac out of reach!2. Fresh fruit

Not all fruit is off limits for your dog. Slices of bananas, apples, pears, oranges and even seedless watermelon make great treats. However, avoid any fruit with pits – peaches and plums – due to a chocking hazard.

Also, blueberries and raisins have a toxic element that causes side effects that range from hyperactivity and repeated vomiting to lethargy, depression, kidney failure or even loss of life. So, watch the fruit cake and fruit salad this year!3. Macadamia Nuts

So delicious, yet fatal for dogs. Just six of these nuts can cause a reaction, which includes vomiting, tremors, weakness, and depression. Within a half-day after ingesting, symptoms appear and last about 12 to 48 hours. Reactions can worsen to include paralysis of the hindquarters and hyperthermia, so if you suspect your pet’s been sneaking a macadamia or two, contact your vet immediately.4. Milk Products

Household pets, namely dogs and cats, do not carry enough lactase (the enzyme that helps break down lactose) to properly digest milk products. So, sharing leftover milk from your cereal or letting them lick your ice cream bowl clean can lead to digestive issues like an upset stomach, diarrhea, or even food allergies.5. Caffeine

Hidden away in many of our favorite liquid treats – tea, soft drinks, energy drinks and coffee – is an ingredient that adds a pip in our step. Although it may perk us up, the methylxanthines in caffeine can trigger vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, panting, increased thirst and urination in our dogs, but also more serious symptoms such as tremors, abnormal heart rhythms and death.6. Chocolate

Packing the 1 – 2 punch, chocolate contains the methylxanthines from caffeine as well as theobromine – an element that can trigger reactions like restlessness, vomiting and muscle spasms. The darker the chocolate the higher the concentration of theobromine making baking and dark chocolate the most toxic for your pet to ingest. And, remember #4 on our list? Chocolate milk might make your children squeal for joy, but just four to 10 ounces could be lethal to smaller dogs.7. Bones

There’s a reason why marketers put bones on dog merchandise. But, if you do “give a dog a bone” it could splinter and cause choking, intestinal blockage, or tears in your dog’s digestive track. So, let your trash take care of that leftover turkey leg or ham bone this holiday season! 8. Spices

Are you trying a new turkey marinade this year? If you’ve been searching through recipes you’ll find that many include onions, garlic or chives. Normal spices, such as these, can trigger irritation in a dog’s gastrointestinal track. In severe cases this irritation leads to red blood cell damage, asthma attacks and even liver damage. 9. Dough

We’re not talking about cookie dough here, although none of us should eat that either! We’re speaking to unbaked bread dough. Even the smallest amount, when ingested, expands in the dog’s stomach which causes discomfort in the very least and can trigger a ruptured stomach or intestines. The ASPCA takes this a step further and says “bread-based” treats should not exceed more than 5 – 10 percent of a dog’s daily diet and to stick with the “pupcakes” from a local dog bakery.10. Artificial Sweetener

Your family may not ask you to pass the “Xylitol” this Thanksgiving meal, but this artificial sweetener finds itself in many products lying around the house. Just search a purse, leftover Halloween basket, or coat pocket and you are sure to find a few. Some candies, gum, toothpaste, and even sugar-free cookies are loaded with this sweetener. Xylitol causes insulin release, which triggers hypoglycemia (or lowered blood sugar levels). Signs of ingestion include vomiting, coordination problems and lethargy. These symptoms can progress to seizures and even liver failure within just a few days. Keep an eye on those candy dishes, or better yet, let the desserts be the true sweet treats of the holiday. As we always suggest, if you notice your dog acting “off” this holiday season, play it safe and visit your vet. This time around you might just consider taking your holiday menu with you!

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! They enjoy a first-class experience when it comes to puppy flying. Doodle of NC puppies win the hearts of folks in TSA, enjoy gazing out the windows of the plane, lounge on their Personal Puppy Attendant’s lap during flight, and arrive at their destination as refreshed from their nap as if they were snuggled in at home.Puppies Never Medicated Most breeders must medicate puppies before flying. The stress of being shipped in crates overwhelms them. And, the medication typically does not wear off for several hours causing the puppies to be drowsy upon arrival.Doodles of NC puppies are never medicated. Read the fine print!

Although breeders can not guarantee that their puppies will be free of any genetic health concerns typical to the breed, (and run from any breeders who say otherwise), the health guarantee should lay out your options should a rare condition manifest.

12-month Guarantee

Some clients ask why the Puppy Health Guarantees only last for one year. The rationale behind this is that nearly all indicators of genetic disorders and abnormalities surface during the first 12-months of a puppy's life. So, having the 1-year time frame helps both the clients and the sellers in two ways:

Helps ensure that a licensed veterinarian is examining the puppy on a regular basis.Minimizes risk of environmental factors contributing to poor health.

The Healthy Puppy Guarantee relieves the buyers of responsibility should any untreatable health conditions arise.

Goldendoodle Genetic Testing

The first step in being able to confidently provide a health guarantee, on our F1B Goldendoodle puppies, was receiving genetic testing on our puppy parents. All parents passed the genetic testing which covers genetic abnormalities and diseases typical to the Golden Retriever and Poodle breeds.

Not only have our puppy parents passed the rigorous genetic testing, but our puppy’s parents parents (AKA puppy grandparents!) passed as well. So, two generations awarded a clean bill of health stand behind our health guarantee.

Goldendoodle Health Conditions

Being a mixed breed, Goldendoodles may develop health conditions common to both Golden Retrievers and Poodles, especially if you aren’t cautious about whom you buy from. They include hip dysplasia, a skin disease called sebaceous adenitis, a heart condition called subvalvular aortic stenosis, Addison’s disease, and eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts and glaucoma.

We recommend asking your breeder to show evidence that both of a puppy’s parents have passed genetic testing. Doodles of NC prides ourselves in having this proof readily accessible to any clients who request to know more.

Health Exam on Puppies

In addition, we add another layer of security on our Puppy Health Guarantee. Prior to heading home, our puppies are examined by a licensed veterinarian and screened for common abnormalities such as hernias and cleft palates.

Doodles of NC stands behind the health and quality of the puppies we breed. If you have any questions regarding additional terms on our Puppy Health Guarantee, or purchasing puppies from a breeder, please don’t hesitate to contact us today!

Do Golden Doodles shed?

To be honest, the answer to this question is one of the main factors that played into us adding Bella, our female Golden Doodle, into our family. From personal videos, pictures, and visits shared during the first 6 weeks, they've already fallen in love with their precious bundles.

So, we've created an Amazon Store we hope will serve as a great resource to new puppy owners. Our top recommended items span the four most important categories to consider.

1) Toys

Choosing the right types of toys will help you ensure your puppy is getting proper exercise while also creating fun memories. With Goldendoodles being a highly intelligent breed, we recommend instilling a toy rotation. Avoiding toy boredom helps keep your shoes and furniture from becoming enticing teething options.

2) Training

Although we devote significant time and energy into litter training the puppies, full house training is just not possible in the first 8 weeks alone. So, it is up to the families to keep the progress going! The first few weeks during home transition are paramount to establishing successful habits in their new environment. From crates and leashes, to a complete training package, this section includes recommended items for housebreaking and behavioral training.

3) Food

You are what you eat...right? The same is true for puppies. Doodles of NC puppies are accustomed to Orijen food. A change in their diet can sometimes make house breaking a bit harder to tackle due to upset tummies. The brand included in our Amazon Store - Orijen - contains the right proportions of meat, fruit and veggies to create the calories and minerals appropriate for their sensitive development and growth.

4) Grooming

After weeks of being groomed by their mommy, puppies find comfort in being pampered. All-natural brands of shampoo and ear wipes help protect their coats and sensitive skin from irritation. And, although Goldendoodles are known for their nearly non-existent hypoallergenic coats, they still enjoy the massage a shedding brush provides.

Our role as breeders extends well beyond the first 8 weeks. We enjoy being available as trusted advisors throughout the lives of our puppies. So, helping new clients transition their puppies home is just another important step along that journey.

If you would like our recommendation for other categories or items, please let us know in the comments section below. And, if you are still in the market for your Goldendoodle puppy, we welcome you to contact us and learn more about the Doodles of NC in-home breeding difference.

Are Goldendoodles good family pets?

If you are considering adding a new fur baby to your family, you certainly want to check out the breed's compatibility. Goldendoodles make the perfect family pet."

Disposition of a Goldendoodle

Being a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, the resulting breed embodies the best of both worlds - the friendly, lovable disposition of the Golden Retriever and the attentive, trainable side of a Poodle. A friend to everyone and a stranger to no one, the Goldendoodle loves socializing and being involved in family activities.

Goldendoodles are always on a mission to please. They are eager, willing learners that crave a role to play. This makes them capable of all types of athletic activities:

flyballagilityhide-and-seekfetch-and-retrievewater canine sports

While training, remember that their lovable disposition makes them respond best to positive reinforcement and gentleness.

Goldendoodles with other pets

Part of being a great family dog requires the ability to get along with other fur friends. A properly socialized Goldendoodle can be quite compatible with cats and smaller dogs. This is thanks to the breed lacking a strong prey drive.

Since proper training and socialization is so vital to the success of a family dog, our in-home breeding philosophy starts our puppies off in a perfect family-training environment. We provide socialization with young children and companion animals from infancy.

Perks of a Goldendoodle

In addition, Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes. From mini-goldendoodles (15 - 30 pounds) to medium goldendoodles (30 - 45 pounds) Doodles of NC offers puppies across the most sought after sizes of the breed. If you have a preference in size, be sure to fill out our puppy application to reserve a puppy from an upcoming litter!

Perhaps worthy of a blog of it's own, it must be mentioned that the breed capitalizes on the nearly non-existent shedding of the Poodle. Trying to keep a house full of kids picked up is a feat in of itself. So, avoiding the tumbleweeds of dog hair rolling down the hallways is certainly an added bonus. Their hypoallergenic fur makes Goldendoodles a great option for families with allergy sensitivities.

We commend you on researching the compatibility of the Goldendoodle within your family dynamic. We hope this blog article answered some, if not all, of your questions regarding the breed. But, please contact us to further discuss if choosing a Goldendoodle as your next puppy is the right move for you!
