And those, my friends, are the days where I rely on the people around me to brainstorm and come up with little bits of genius.</p> <p> </p> <p>Today, Sarah told me about a TED Talk video from Elizabeth Gilbert of <span style="font-family: mceinline;"><em>Eat, Pray, Love</em> fame about nurturing creativity — </span>pretty apropos considering that I hit a bit of a wall tonight and really needed something to overcome the blockades of my mind.</p> <p> </p> <p>She speaks about the fear of not being able to do better than our last effort, how it can stifle creativity, and what we can do to contnue on. She speaks of our social stigma to link misery and creativity — i.e. that our best creative work comes when we're the most emotionally disturbed. It's a good, honest talk about an approach to separate the two without sacrificing quality. Kev is generally in the know about the different social media and web development events going on around Toronto, so I'll often lend an ear when he's trying to tell me what's going on.</div> <p /> <div>$10 and a quick jaunt later, I was at the <a href="http://camaraderie.ca/">Camaraderie Co-operative</a> where the event would be held. And it was at that very moment where I learned an important lesson — no two tweetups/meetups/events are created equally. Not all of them come in large packages. Where I was used to conferences of 1500, Twitter-organized parties of hundreds and speaker engagements of dozens, this was a small, intimate group there to discuss and learn about a topic of interest. You had all the time in the world to get all of your questions in. It was small enough so that you got to know a bit about everyone in the room. And since there were only so many people around, the information was tailored to the audience, not simply rehashed from documents that had been passed around a number of times from hand to hand. In short — it was probably the last thing I expected.</div> <p /> <div>We focused not only on how one should go about developing one's personal brand, but also about how one should portray that brand on the big three social networks (LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook). To show that even if you think you're a pro that you can always learn from just about anywhere, here's a few things I quickly learned from this event:</div> <p /> <div> <ul class="MailOutline"> <li>While I make great use of my Facebook and Twitter accounts, I could do a far better job at optimizing my LinkedIn account (and I wish I'd been at the April 11th event, since that's what that session was all about!)<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 11px;"> </span>— past creating a very detailed profile, I haven't really done too much with it</span></li> <li>When posting content to the Internet, one should make a message tailored to each individual audience, since you will very likely have a different audience on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (which is a <strong>very</strong> good tip that I've <strong>never</strong> followed and will start to)</li> <li>New tools and things to read, such as <a href="http://twitterfall.com/">TwitterFall</a> and <a href="http://www.twistimage.com/about-mitch/">Mitch Joel's</a> "Six Pixels of Separation", which Kev had suggested to me earlier</li> </ul> </div> <p /> <div>A good number of people had to skeedaddle right after the event though, so I didn't get to meet everyone, but I did get to know a fellow civil servant, someone looking to develop a company specializing in personal branding and the speaker for the event, <a href="http://www.twitter.com/wordtree">Sue Varty</a> (<a href="http://twitter.com/#!/marcroginsky">Marc Roginsky</a> had been there but had to leave early), <strong>slightly</strong> better by the end of the night. It was informative and if you're pretty new to Twitter and looking to learn how to optimize it, maybe you should look at checking out the April 25th session!</div> <p /> <div>So with that, I'm off to keep working on my personal brand. But critics say the game merely reinforces negative ethnic stereotypes.</p> <p>The game is similar to the classic Milton Bradley "Game of Life," but with one major difference: the race factor.</p> <p>Each player enters the game's hypothetical world as an 18-year-old black male. A roll of the die determines where the player's adult life begins: "Ghetto," "Military," "Black University," or "Glamourwood" (the entertainment industry).</p> <p>The ultimate goal is to reach a space on the board called "Freedom." Along the way, players land on spaces that may help or hinder their pursuit.</p> <p>Often, players land on spaces marked as "Racism," which requires them to draw from a deck of "Racism" cards. For example, one card reads: "Your co-worker repeatedly tells you racist jokes. Move back two spaces." Another card reads: "You won a discrimination lawsuit. Collect $10,000."</p> <p> </p><p>"Life as a Blackman" is the brainchild of Redondo Beach, Calif., game maker Chuck Sawyer, who is black. Sawyer said his game is based on his own experiences as a minority trying to succeed in corporate America. And he wants to introduce his game into schools and businesses to teach racial sensitivity.</p> <p>"We all need to be a little bit more sensitive and aware of each other as human beings," Sawyer said. "Instead of getting on a soap box and preaching about it, let's make a fun game and deal with the realities of being a minority in America."</p> <p>But some question just how real the game is. Critics insist the game's references to the ghetto, police and jail merely reinforce negative black stereotypes.</p> <p>"Black youth aren't suffering due to racism. They're suffering because they don't have mothers and fathers guiding them in the right way to go," said the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), a non-profit group that seeks to strengthen families in urban areas.</p> <p>"We should be encouraging them, letting them know if you work hard, treat people fairly and do what's right in life <strong>�</strong> in this country you can make it," Peterson said.</p> <p>Throughout "Life as a Blackman," players have the option of committing crimes. Although they will most likely land in jail, players with more money can use "Dream Team" lawyers to get them out <strong>�</strong> an apparent reference to the O.J. Simpson trial.</p> <p>"To equate [the black experience] with O.J. Simpson and the ghetto is definitely going in the wrong direction," Peterson said.</p> <p>For now, "Life as a Blackman" is sold on the Internet and in small novelty stores. "I tried to stay relaxed and bring it home, but it wasn't enough."</p><span></span><p>Dix, who won the 100 meters and placed second at the U.S. nationals last weekend, said his race experience had helped, "but I'm a little beat up, too."</p><span></span><p>"I was a little sloppy out of the blocks, but I was able to hold on," he added. "Tyson gave me great competition."</p><span></span><p>Oliver, the Olympic bronze medalist, equaled Dominique Arnold's national record with his second consecutive lifetime best. He ran 12.93 to win the U.S. championships last Sunday.</p><span></span><p>Only world record holder Dayron Robles (12.87) of Cuba and China's Liu Xiang have run faster.</p><span></span><p>"I didn't get a great start but I brought it home," Oliver said.</p><span></span><p>The American left countryman Ryan Wilson (13.16) well behind in second spot.</p><span></span><p>Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown, the Olympic 200 champion, surprised a talented 100 field with a personal best and season-leading 10.78 seconds to leave her thinking she might double at next year's world championships.</p><span></span><p>Olympic 100 gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser trailed in 10.82, just ahead of American Carmelita Jeter (10.83).</p><span></span><p>Three other season-leading marks were set.</p><span></span><p>American world champion Christian Cantwell used a last-effort throw of 22.41 meters to win the shot put, and world indoor 800 meters champion Mariya Savinova of <a href="http://www.reuters.com/places/russia" title="Full coverage of Russia">Russia</a> clocked 1:57.56 to beat Olympic 1,500 gold medalist Nancy Langat of Kenya at the shorter distance.</p><span></span><p>Sudan's Abubaker Kaki added a fifth season-leading mark when he took the infrequently run 1,000 meters in 2:13.62.</p><span></span><p>Kenyan Olympic 1,500 champion Asbel Kiprop just missed another when he won the mile in 3:49.75.</p><span></span><p>Olympic long jump champion Irving Saladino of Panama pulled a mild surprise as he used a wind-assisted leap of 8.46 meters to beat U.S. world gold medalist Dwight Phillips (8.41).</p><span></span><p>Brazilian world indoor gold medalist Fabiana Murer also came out on top, winning the women's pole vault over Polish world champion Anna Rogowska. Both cleared 4.58 meters.
