The #ReGiftTO Unwrap-Up

If you missed it, Thursday night was ReGiftTO, hosted by @clickflickca and @morningmoe. It was a good party held for the heckuvit and filled with cool tweeples (i.e. people who know each other primarily through Twitter), bangin' beats and awesome prizes! It was conveniently located at Our House on Ossington JUST south of Dundas.

Unfortunately for me and my overconfident self, I thought it was at Ossington and COLLEGE. So, for you non-Torontonians out there, when you get off of a streetcar knowing you have to get to 214 College, but the house in front of you is 493, and you know the house numbers differ by 2 between them (and it's snowing and cold and you have to walk uphill to school and then uphill again back home while being chased by rabid mountain goats) - you know you have quite the walk ahead of you.

Eventually, I got to ReGiftTO - okay. Mission accomplished. Our House provided a pretty nice atmosphere - dimmed lighting, well-dressed staff and enough room to mix and mingle. The night started off a little slow (for my tastes, anyway - everyone knows I like as much energy as possible at any given time), with more mingling than partying going on, and everyone seeming to be hanging around the narrowest part of the bar:

I mean, that was the part BY the bar, so if you wanted drinks, it totally made sense - but by the very nature of physics, I imagine it was louder, hotter and less spatially comfortable there than anywhere else in the bar, but hey. As long as y'all enjoyed yourselves :)

Eventually the crowd started to disperse some, which would soon segue into the gift exchange portion of the night!

I gave a Travel Scrabble (which is awesome, but I had two!) and got a @lotsofolives prize pack ;) (Two notebooks and Burt's Bees Beeswax lip balm - perfect gift for me!) Totally coincidental that I'd already won one that she'd brought over for HoHoTO, so it only added to the awesomeness :)

After the exchanging and some CTV interviews…

...the dance floor started to pick up some steam. With Rob the DJ on the 1's and 2's (no, not @robsarj - who knows what he was off doing), and a circle was started with the help of @christineestima, @fragileheart, @kevinkvs and others. Good times :)

And of course, we can't forget about the prizes. Somehow, even after complaining that I wasn't winning anything, I walked away with a sheet of custom vinyl stickers and a brand-spankin' new Cisco router. Hopefully the Internets will be a bit faster for me now! Not that it was slow, but more speed always = more AWESOME.

Couple that with some swag from Entripy, and you're good to go!

So we're wrapping up the year! 2010 has definitely been an active one, but I think mostly for the good. I'll be posting up the 2010 20K wrap-up blog tomorrow as well as announcing the new initiative.

Third Time's a Charm - The Trifecta of Twitter Tweetups

WooTO: December 14th; HoHoTO: December 16th; Electric Christmas 2: December 20th. Three events that were all crazy fun for their own reasons, and that I was lucky enough to attend!

Christmas is always a busy season: buying gifts, going to parties, planning out where you need to be - this year was exceptionally busy as I started to get my tweet on. There's SO MUCH going on in the T-Dot that I never knew about before I started hitting up tweetups (awkward sentence, anyone?) and getting better in touch with my digital side. Been a great couple of months :)

Let me tell you about the events above and what you missed if you didn't know about them or get a chance to drop in:

WooTO

#WooTO was a tweetup held at the Woo and organized by Joallore Alon, aka @clickflickca - I was personally excited for it, because there were friends I'd been speaking to online for quite some time who I'd never met in the flesh who would be there, and I was rolling with my friends Kev and Allie, so it was all good times. Not the biggest fan of Woo's food, personally, but I still had a great time talking, joking, singing and just doing what I usually do. Didn't hurt that they gave us free sushi and cocktails to boot :) I met a lot of awesome people there who regularly tweet and make for great conversation!

Also, with sponsors like Cineplex, Dentyne Canada and Roadrunner Records, there were plenty of prize giveaways for those who made it out - I still thank Jo for the free Christmas-themed headgear and the Cineplex movie pass :)

HoHoTO

Next up came #HoHoTO, aka the Toronto twitter party of the year (at least as far as I know)!

Man, what a night. WHAT A NIGHT. This is why I love the tweetup scene. This is why I try to keep posting quality content! If you missed it it's a shame, but the third annual #HoHoTO - a party-sized tweetup to support the Daily Bread Food Bank - was off the chain :)

Ah, by the way - Tweetup def.: An event where people come together to meet and have fun, often knowing nothing about each other save the fact that all attendees are Twitter users.

Despite the fact that the event started at 7, I showed up fashionably late and flying solo due to some other important business I had to attend to. When I got in and the party was already bumpin!

I didn't take too many pictures this time around as I was too busy dancing, but it did allow me to get enough experiences for the night to write a rap out of it :).

So HoHoTO was good times :) if you missed it, I dunno what you had that was better to do - but damn.

Other highlights included:

Winning an Eco Prize Pack ($250 value) which is well-detailed below (shout-out to Lucy for helping donate the beast of a prize!)

2 - new Honeywell thermostat!
3 - Rocky Mountain soap products (shout-out to Melinda!)

4 - a Brita filter jug (which will be used at work as soon as we figure out why our water is coming out so NASTY...)
5 - an electric timer, which I was going to go buy since... I often fall asleep with the light on D:
6 - a water bottle
7 - the most comfortable Mountain Equipment Co-op sling bag I've ever worn
8-10 - dishwashing and laundry products
11 & 14 - his and hers Bullfrog t-shirts
12 - Burt's Bees Beeswax lip balm
13 - natural nut-based soap nuts for laundry (given to a friend from church since we didn't know whether or not it worked with high efficiency laundry machines)

Getting a glamour shot taken on the second floor, but I'd assume I look more goofy than glamorous with the hat on
The taxi ride home - which involved me giving some light legal and social action advice to my cabbie, who as it turned out is East African and battling with his housing corporation and a loan company on paying back money that he doesn't have and barely makes (let's add a sick daughter to the mix...)

All in all, one of the more interesting nights that I've had as of late. I'd tell you more, but with a plethora of blogs, sites and other sources of media out there, I think I've said enough!

Electric Christmas 2

#electricxmas2 was a cool event, with proceeds going to War Child Canada. I guess it was to help with Christine Estima's bid to become their ambassador for a competition she was participating in? I was a bit unclear on this, but still - support is support. It was a good night hanging with the likes of Kevin and Lucy (and yes, you too, Jazzy), while meeting new folks like Lauren O'Nizzle and Nate Kogan (albeit briefly). Sean Ward was up to bat as the MC, with talents such as Reggy and Kat Langdon lending their vocals to move the crowd :) The Cellular Guru was celebrating his birthday as well and gave away a TON of phones - I'm not even playing: Blackberrys, Samsung Tablets and whatever else - I think there was an iPhone 4 in the mix, too! I didn't get one, but it was impressive enough to see the telecommunications industry donating all of these prizes to an event that was pay what you can admission and getting a gift that was $5 or less to participate in the exchange. In-sanity.

All in all, I've been closing out 2010 on a good note and laying some foundations for what I think will be a ridiculously awesome 2011. Thanks as always for keeping an eye out on the madness I'm up to - I may have an awesome announcement for mid-next week, but gotta see how it'll pan out first :)

The HoHoTO 2010 Rap

So a little while back, I promised (perhaps foolishly) a HoHoTO rap that would be done after attending the event. Well - here you go, guys! I followed through with it and got 'er done! Let's take a look at what it took

How did the end of the year sneak up on me?!

Man, so this is one of the last weekends of the year - I don't know how it all happened, but somehow it's December all of a sudden. Utter insanity. A ton went down in 2010...

I think I mentioned getting engaged - the story behind it is pretty epic, but I think that it warrants a separate blog entry unto itself
The 2010 OPS Battle of the Bands was a big hit - I haven't heard the numbers behind it, but with 9 bands playing over 6 hours, it had a ton of fans and a lot of enjoyment behind it. My buddy Jay took photos for me with my lovely Canon Powershot S90 - you can take a gander at them here:

But really, most importantly, there's 12 shopping days left until Christmas and I haven't even started working getting any of the items I need to buy yet. Yeah, it's going to be REALLY interesting this year :S

BIG DREAMS.

So I just saw The Social Network. Holy crap. What a great movie. It stirred... something in me. I don't quite know what it is, but I like it. As soon as I got back home, I started working on some things. The mockups I've had sitting all over the place. The random ideas strewn about my backpack not really doing much of anything. I'm working on putting them all where they belong - in one coherent system that betters the world around me and the people that I deal with.

Earphones aren't working properly - annoying. This might end up being a part stream-of-consciousness post.

So anyway, if you haven't seen this movie, I think it's prudent that you do. Everyone's going to come out with an opinion. Eisenberg's portrayal of Zuckerberg is that of a socially inept genius - but oh MAN, what a genius. The one-liners. The vision. He was like a well-oiled engine moving forward to effect change. Seeing the whole story unfold was... just something else altogether. So here I am no longer wondering what exactly the next big idea that I could create IS, but rather how I can combine all the different things I do into one larger behemoth of a tool/magazine/whatever it is that it's going to look like.

I'm a HUGE fan of creating new ideas - taking a number of different elements and combining them together into something ultimately more useable by people whose lives could be better for them. You see effects of this in daily life. Social networking has made people more aware of what's going on in the broader world around them. You wouldn't have the Magic Bullet if there hadn't been a need identified for people to have quicker ways to produce and consume foods that would previously take far greater lengths of time to prepare.

It's all about riding the wave of change, or getting drowned by it. I've gotta learn how to surf. Let's take a look at the madness I'm up to at the moment:

I'm trying to take collections of things like these and make them into SOMETHING. Something I can use to improve life for others. To make an impact. I don't know what it looks like yet, but I'm not going to let these ideas just die off.

1) It's going to get worse

No silver linings and no lemonade. The elevator only goes down. The bright note is that the elevator will, at some point, stop.

2) The future isn't going to feel futuristic

It's simply going to feel weird and out-of-control-ish, the way it does now, because too many things are changing too quickly. The reason the future feels odd is because of its unpredictability. If the future didn't feel weirdly unexpected, then something would be wrong.

3) The future is going to happen no matter what we do. The future will feel even faster than it does now

The next sets of triumphing technologies are going to happen, no matter who invents them or where or how. Not that technology alone dictates the future, but in the end it always leaves its mark. The only unknown factor is the pace at which new technologies will appear. This technological determinism, with its sense of constantly awaiting a new era-changing technology every day, is one of the hallmarks of the next decade.

4)Move to Vancouver, San Diego, Shannon or Liverpool

There'll be just as much freaky extreme weather in these west-coast cities, but at least the west coasts won't be broiling hot and cryogenically cold.

5) You'll spend a lot of your time feeling like a dog leashed to a pole outside the grocery store – separation anxiety will become your permanent state

6) The middle class is over. It's not coming back

Remember travel agents? Remember how they just kind of vanished one day?

That's where all the other jobs that once made us middle-class are going – to that same, magical, class-killing, job-sucking wormhole into which travel-agency jobs vanished, never to return. However, this won't stop people from self-identifying as middle-class, and as the years pass we'll be entering a replay of the antebellum South, when people defined themselves by the social status of their ancestors three generations back. Enjoy the new monoclass!

7) Retail will start to resemble Mexican drugstores

In Mexico, if one wishes to buy a toothbrush, one goes to a drugstore where one of every item for sale is on display inside a glass display case that circles the store. One selects the toothbrush and one of an obvious surplus of staff runs to the back to fetch the toothbrush. It's not very efficient, but it does offer otherwise unemployed people something to do during the day.

8) Try to live near a subway entrance

In a world of crazy-expensive oil, it's the only real estate

that will hold its value, if not increase.

9) The suburbs are doomed, especially thoseE.T. , California-style suburbs

This is a no-brainer, but the former homes will make amazing hangouts for gangs, weirdoes and people performing illegal activities. The pretend gates at the entranceways to gated communities will become real, and the charred stubs of previous white-collar homes will serve only to make the still-standing structures creepier and more exotic.

10) In the same way you can never go backward to a slower computer, you can never go backward to a lessened state of connectedness

11) Old people won't be quite so clueless

No more “the Google,” because they'll be just that little bit younger.

12) Expect less

Not zero, just less.

13) Enjoy lettuce while you still can

And anything else that arrives in your life from a truck, for that matter. For vegetables, get used to whatever it is they served in railway hotels in the 1890s. Jams. Preserves. Pickled everything.

14) Something smarter than us is going to emerge

Thank you, algorithms and cloud computing.

15) Make sure you've got someone to change your diaper

The way we define our sense of self will continue to morph via new ways of socializing. The notion of your life needing to be a story will seem slightly corny and dated. Your life becomes however many friends you have online.

Time perception is very much about how you sequence your activities, how many activities you layer overtop of others, and the types of gaps, if any, you leave in between activities.

Ha, I don't normally post stuff like this, but sometimes we all need a little help. Sarah was kind enough to show this article to me from The Toronto Star (no, she wasn't dropping any hints), and I think everyone should take a look to see what they agree with, disagree with, or even think is just plain stupid.

A few key things I'll note:

Outside of the Facebook item in the women list, I'll pretty much agree with everything there
The men's list is WAY longer than the women's list. Is this telling or just plain biased?
Communication = the solution to EVERYTHING

Adventures in DoomzLand

Hope everyone's been well! Today seems to have zipped right by - Daylight Savings Time + hanging out with friends after church + a strong feeling of lethargy = Sunday basically having slipped between my fingers :)

What's been up over on this side of the screen? A few things...

After several years of relative obscurity and just working away at life, I'm pretty much ready again to make a go at running my own website and providing content for the masses on a regular basis. There's a lot of ideas I've had milling around in my head, and it's definitely time that I start getting them out to friends, family and the new people I could be introducing to my special brand of entertainment on a daily basis :) With that said, I'm hitting a bit of a block and would really appreciate some help - I'm trying to figure out what text I can put on the first page to reintroduce myself, and nothing meaningful enough has come to mind.

Then, an idea hit me - what if I did an interview? My blog readers could be the interviewers, and I'd be the interviewee! It'd be great! So are you all up to the task? Can you help ask me questions that I can answer and post up so that there's some content to start with? It will all be anonymous on the site and the entire thing will likely be moved over to the "About" page as an FAQ, but I'd like to have something good to start with :) You even have the option to ask anonymously, so feel free to ask even the craziest of questions. Please note that I will remove anything that I think is too offensive, insane, whatever.

Foursquare

How fun is this? Foursquare's been dominating my life as of late, with the ability to run around town, keep track of what I've been up to and check out recommendations from other people - Foursquare is all sorts of awesome! Also, it's all sorts of stalkerish, but obviously, one should always be choosy with how much information they're putting out there to the world. Back to my point, though - Foursquare's a pretty cool idea. Harkening back to the idea that word of mouth is the best form of advertisement, I think there are a few things that make it stand apart from numerous other ways you could go about spreading the word about a tool:

WTFUQUA?!

Went to see Brooklyn's Finest with my boy RamDeezy. Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Don Cheadle, Wesley Snipes. Four actors who've done their own considerably epic films in their history - but this? This was a train wreck. I love a good cop/crime drama. I don't know what it is, but I think that it's the stories of characters who are so unlike me, from another area of life - they really draw me in.

This movie did not.

Between unbelievable scenes that were utterly ridiculous, cruddy acting from supporting characters and dialogue that I could've written in my sleep, there's only one thing I can say.

Dear director Antoine Fuqua - WTFUQUA did you just make me watch?!

The only good part is that Ram and I got free passes out of the entire ordeal, due to the fact that the first time we went, we'd only made it through the previews due to the popcorn machine in the concession area going on fire, but hey, whatever.

So in conclusion, yes yes y'all, I'm still alive. More coming soon!

So this is what you're getting for today - a sketchdump :) Lots of logo, site and graphing work going on over here - I'll make sure to share whenever anything gets DONE. I was going to do a quick one related to the Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim to Win contest, but after reading David McCandless' blog Information is Beautiful, I've been rethinking my approach to infographics. You'll still see something, but it'll probably be far more imaginative than what I'd originally envisioned :)

I wasn't entirely keen on this chart, but a friend urged me to post it up anyway - so here goes!

Jay-Z is many things to many people. I'll be the first to admit that I think Jay-Z is an excellent businessman, and yeah, I listen to a lot of his music. But there's also the dark side of Jay-Z - Jay-Z the biter (something that'll likely constitute a flowchart of its own). Jay-Z the man you love to hate. There're few in the rap game these days that give us as much material to scrutinize.

So, in the name of fair play and infographic love, I'm gonna start dishing out a series of charts as the ideas come to me.

I call them: The Jigga Figgas. Find out about "your favourite rapper's favourite rapper" with a number of revealing graphs about the man who forged an empire (often upon the backs of others, but who's counting?) with the tools available to him. There'll be ones of further complexity as time goes on, but if you have a point you want to see explored or something about Jigga that's really been bothering you but you just couldn't QUITE place your finger on it, let me know :)
