The TV Matters versus TV Tax war: A solution

I am starting to agree with this fellow (see link above). If the local TV channels want to compete in the TV world, not only are they going to have to charge for their services, but they should also be allowed to be NOT chosen, just like all of the other paid channels out there.

And if they are considering showing more commercials, per half hour (again as this guy is suggesting) then I simply won’t want them. I’m on the verge of dropping my cable for a simple download-as-I-see fit TV shows, and watch them when I want to and not be subjected to the gross amount of commercials now being shown. So, do what you will, I will let my decision on the subject be made by my purchaing (or not) of their channels/services.

Net Neutrality, who is it good for? Big business, or the simple users.

As if that isn’t an easy question to answer. Its certainly not us common users. The above article is very well written and describes in pretty good detail what all of this Net Neutrality stuff means. Its a bit of a read but well worth your time to have a look at it so that when changes happen to you, you might have an understanding of what is happening and why.

What frustrates me about it all is that even though the idea of these “rules” are supposed to protect the common users of the internet by forcing the big 3 ISP’s (here in Canada) to adopt and follow some rules, there is no way a common user can find out if they are being subjected to the issues that these rules are attempting to protect us from.

Is it just expected, that if we attempt to use a torrent to download something between the hours of 08:00 – 18:00 that it will be slowed down by the ISP’s? How will I know if it is being slowed down even though my attempt is made not within those “peak” hours? And what defines this “peak hours”? Is it defined per timezone across Canada, or is from 08:00 AST to 18:00 PST, which is over 14 hours long!

I don’t understand why the use of torrents just isn’t accepted and perhaps some knowledge-sharing on how your torrent configuration could be changed to not make using them so horrible to the overall network in the first place.

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in country
NSW (Australia), it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.

Later, when the nurses were going through his meagre possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Melbourne . The old man’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and
appearing in mags for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.
And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the
author of this ‘anonymous’ poem winging across the Internet.

Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses? . . . . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . . . . When you’re looking at me?
A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
Uncertain of habit . . . . . . . . With faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food .. . .. . . . . And makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . . . . .. ‘I do wish you’d try!’
Who seems not to notice . . . . .the things that you do.
And forever is losing . . . . . . . . . . A sock or shoe?

I read somewhere that one of the reasons why we humans dream is the brains way of retraining itself. So for example, for those people who dream of running, or being chased. It isn’t the act of running that you should take away from such a dream but perhaps the idea that if you are ever in a situation where something isn’t right, whether it be a life or death situation or simply making a decision about something and that if you feel something isn’t right, run away. The dream is helping your brain be prepared some odd situation that maybe you’ve never really had to face before. I had one of those dreams.

I dreamt that we were missing our old house and its location (out in the boonies) and so we made a quick decision to sell our current (new) house and buy something near our old place. Then something happened. The purpose of this other house didn’t happen. We struggled for months to get something, because we had to buy a house now, somewhere, anywhere because we already sold our existing house. We ended up having to accept the purchase of a crappy old house that had its forced air furnace ducts outside. In my dream I remember standing there looking up at all of this ducting and thinking how disgusted I was with it all and how much regret I had had for thinking of selling the house in the first place.

So, I believe the dream isn’t necessarily telling me how happy we are with our current house but my brains way of training me to better express myself and to better listen to my inner-self when it comes to such decisions and to not leap too quickly at such decisions. See, retraining.
