Years ago I had a small German Shepherd mix. As kids, for fun we’d find an old T-shirt and put him in it to catch a Kodak moment. Well, back then that was on ‘film’ with a flash ‘cube’ attached to the exterior of the camera and back then it was just for fun. Who knew that the industry for cool dog apparel would take off as it has?
Every day you are in the checkout line at the supermarket looking at the tabloid headlines just take note. Celebrities with their coiffed pooches in their designer dog clothing from leashes, to diamond studded collars to full ensembles. In their rain gear with rubber boots – ‘this’ is not a bad idea because that ‘wet dog’ smell isn’t the most pleasant of fragrances.

1/ Your Pets need adequate food, but not too much. Feeding us too much isn’t good for us either. A fat dog or cat can experience the same health risks an overweight human can.
2/ They need exercise! Remember the old saying: “if your dog is fat, then YOU need more exercise”. With fenced yards and leash free parks getting them to a venue to work off a little kibble is easier than ever.
3/ Keep them hydrated – just like a human, they need access to water. This applies 365 days a year but during the hot summer months they are more susceptible to dehydration.
4/ Shelter and shade from the ‘elements’. In the hot summer days you pet needs a break from the intense sun either indoors, or a protected area like I dog house. In the winter there are risks when they are exposed to extreme cold as well. Along with the basic protection from the elements like storms, extreme heat, or cold and the risk of exposure , also consider the other critters running wild out there, and what harm can come to your pets from a result of wildlife or even the sad tales we hear of ignorant humans who abuse dog and cats.
5/ Affection and some attention are not only needed but well deserved. The unconditional love they give us? This should be so easy however some poor dogs get tied outside and ignored. Fossils and DNA evidence have indicated that Dogs have been in existence dating back possibly 150,000 years.
There is another school of thought that views Dogs dating back to Europe about 14,000 years ago as a descendant of the wolf.
Originally it was thought Dogs were Color Blind but recent studies have shown they see ‘some’ color just not to the extent of humans.
While the design of their eyes may not allow them to see as much Detail as humans they are more sensitive to light and movement than we are.
Not only do dogs have a much broader range of frequency they can hear than us, they have the ability to tilt, rotate and tune their ears into sound giving them the gift of being able to pinpoint the location of a sound as well. The only human known to come close to this is a Mother and her hearing ‘just’ before the kids say ‘ I didn’t do it!’ ; )
As for their keen sense of smell... well I think the fact they are used at airports to sniff out illegal substances and used extensively by police departments ... we know they weren’t hired for their love of coffee and donuts. Well, you might me able to entice them with a donut for sure!
Longevity of your beloved buddy will certainly be influenced by the care you give them however there is a lot to do with breed and size as well. Larger breeds may only live 7-9 years, some small breeds I have even seen to live to 20 and generally the mixed fall somewhere in between at 13-14 years.
· The world book of records recorded the oldest living dog to be 29 years old. This dates back to the late 1930’s
· The tallest dogs are the Great Dane and the Irish wolfhound. The smallest dogs are the Chihuahua, Yorkshire terrier and Toy Poodle, which stand about 2 ½ “ at the shoulder
· In short bursts a Greyhound can reach a speed of 45 MPH.

Air Conditioned Dog Houses for Hot Dogs!

“HOT DOGS”
As a pet owner when I read stories of pets left in vehicles on a hot summer day ... or I see a dog tied up in the hot sun with no shade in his roaming range at all, it makes me so sad. We are responsible to protect them. It’s no different than being a parent. Our four legged friends smother us with love and make us feel needed and comforted. In turn we need to protected them. The idea of them suffering in the heat is just crazy. There is NO need for it at all. The amount of time they are exposed to the heat, the temperature and the relative humidity all play a part in their ability to cope with the summer climate. Take into account the dogs weight, age or overall health and these too play a part in their ability to deal with the stress of a hot day. Leaving your dog sealed up in the sun in a car? Have you completely lost your mind? There is NO need for it! Would you do that with grandma? I think not!
If a dog’s body temperature goes above 104 degrees they can experience ‘heat stroke’. This can have very harmful effects on your dog’s health. Signs that the heat is affecting your pet can include: pale and dry gums, signs of weakness or loss of balance, the ear flaps may appear red and flushed, or when symptoms become extreme your dog may vomit, have loose stools or no longer be mentally alert.
Some ideas to combat the effects of the heat are filed under ‘common sense’. Limit activities during the middle of the day – take your pet for a walk early in the morning and later in the evening. If the kids are out running around in the heat with your pooch, the kids will find a pool to jump in, or come inside for a drink and to sit in the shade and A/C to cool off. Give your adopted buddy the same consideration and let him or her cool off as well. Find them a shady spot under a tree to enjoy the breeze and have some water. Put Fido in the house with a cold tiled floor to lie down on. A dog house will be a treat for them as well. They have a man made roof to create shade and some come with air conditioning too! We love the A/C and some days it makes life bearable for us, why would we not allow our pets to enjoy this same luxury? Their wearing fur coats for heavens sake!
I was surprised when I read that there are some breeds that suffer more in the heat than others. Those listed as more sensitive are the English bulldog and boxer to name just two. If you are concerned about your dog’s ability to deal with the heat, discuss it with your Vet. These are a partial list of suggestions and in most cases a healthy dog just needs the consideration of a shady cool place, time to relax and water ... We enjoy that kind of lifestyle on a hot day – why shouldn’t they?

Cedars are a preferred choice as ornamental trees, often used in horticulture in temperate climates where winter temperatures do not fall below about −25 °C. Use your imagination and you can picture the scene, you are flying over several houses on an incoming flight into a major city. What do you see below? The houses, swimming pools, swing sets, the trash cans with one missing lid and then there in the corner is a dilapidated dog house! A feeble attempt by someone to construct a home for their beloved pet.
Or worse a cold plastic dog house that does little in the inclement weather!
So the solution? Oh thought you would never ask! The custom dog house! Dog houses have entered a new realm ..there are heated dog houses, insulated dog houses, duplex dog houses and luxury dog houses!

Dog houses for large breed dogs

A dog needs its personal ‘space’ ... just like a person would. When adopting a large breed Pit Bull I read what the experts had to say on training them. Give them their own space – something that is a ‘safe place’ for them, where they know they belong was key to training them. In the house we had a nice blanket – if we travelled we could take it with us. At home, she had her Home.... A dog house for a large breed dog. She loved it out there shaded from the sun, feeling the breeze. Like a vacation spot for her away from the noise of the house and the need to move time and time again when she wanted away from the noise, confusion and kids.
Keep in mind – Dogs are dogs... not cats. An 18 pound cat will happily cram it’s body into a shoe box or you will find it curled tightly on top of the DVD player in a ball sleeping on the warm surface. A Dog however likes to stretch out and to be comfortable so you need to give your Pet surroundings that fit and suit them. Imagine if you tried sleeping in a bed that was too small for you and your feet hung over the end …not comfortable!
I worked at a Kennel for several years and had an experience that reminded me of this need for space. A 135 LB Mastiff who was as gentle as a lamb when I entered his indoor run. Seemed happy to see me, we greeted each other and I opened the small wooden door that would let this gentle giant to his Outdoor run. It wasn’t raining, snowing; cold... he just stood frozen and would not go near the door. The door was large enough for him but in his mind he didn’t like going thru that smaller space to get where he needed to be. He was not afraid to go out because he happily dragged me down the hallway to the full size door that would lead him to the large out door run.
This was a new setting, unfamiliar to him and he was just not sure of the space. He needed to know that he was safe. Like a child clinging to his mother not sure of climbing a tree or running thru the tunnel at the park, the need to feel their space is a safe place. This big guy needed to know he was a ‘fit’ .... keep this in mind when choosing your pets personal space especially their Dog house as this area will be one they share with no one – they need to feel they are comfortable in it not confined. It’s not a punishment for them to be there, it’s their place of safety.... however if your husband ends up there, that’s another story!
