NYC Premiere

I have successfully spent my first ever, 27 hours in New York City so far. I sat through a few hours at a Stabucks in China Town waiting for my hotel to check me in, people watching. There are so many beautiful people here, it's amazing. Anyone who knows me well enough will know that I love fashion and dressing up rather than down. There is something about sweats (as an every day ensemble), that makes me depressed. It shows that the person is either too lazy to put on anything decent or just simply doesn't care what she/he puts on his body and how flattering or un-falttering the outfit may be. New Yorkers have an aesthetic that I can relate to and tend to favor over any other. I am curious and excited to explore the city.

Paris Metro Map

In a couple of weeks I will be moving to New York City for an internship. I am super excited to be able to work with the wonderful girls at Vagabond NYC. For me, maps of the transportation or metro say a lot about a city (how big it is, how accessible, or how confusing etc.) so I wanted to put together maps of the subway/metro/tube of cities I have visited or lived in ( except London, but I love the London Tube logo) to compare.

How many times have you come across dating advice in today's magazines? From what I remember of my magazine reading days, there was at least two articles in every issue. Whether it was dating or sex advice, it can surely be found in any issue on today's magazine stands. Here is a little taste of something different: Dating advice from 1938! I particularly like the advice about not getting lipstick on your date's handkerchief (below). The one above, can still be applied today when going on dates, in my humble opinion.

Have you ever wondered whether a cloud could be stored in a bottle? I certainly have, especially while looking out of a window of an airplane and daydreaming about the wonderful shapes (particularly elephants and castles) that I would love to contain in a transparent container to keep me company for a little while longer. Berndnaut Smilde has achieved the impossible, although he did not yet find a way to store clouds, he succeeded in creating them and last long enough to serve as installations. Yes, the Amsterdam based artist actually creates clouds on his own and "installs" them in an exhibit space. I love innovative art, and this is honestly, a childhood dream come true.

Mad Dogs

The lovely Mad Men fanatics will enjoy these dog comparisons to the major characters in the popular TV series by the Dogster Magazine. I love watching Mad Men, not particularly for the plot but for the surroundings and the clothing! I fell in love with the interiors when I saw an Alexander Calder painting hanging on one of the office walls. I laughed out loud when I first saw the pictures. Some are surprisingly similar. Especially the one with Betty Francis and her's and Don's daughter Sally Draper.

Love these paintings by Kelsey Brookes. I think I have just found my new favourite contemporary artist. These would look amazing in a white space or a modern interior that needs a little bit of drama. I would love to have one hanging up on my bedroom walls (although it might be too distracting, I would just sit and stare at the beauty of these).

A Pop of Colour

This women's wear shop in Seoul Korea designed by Kwang-Hyun Han and Young-Sub Yun from the Korean design group M4 is what I like to call a shopper's worship hall. The fact that the interior is white and the geometrical lines lead your eye towards the colourful clothing gives you an awe effect, causing the customer to have an "I-must-have-this-right-now" attitude. The drama of the white lacquered space and the simplistic geometrical designs makes clothing displayed on the re-assembleable racks all the more attractive and exciting. In my opinion this is a visual experience worthy of exhibition. I would love to run and jump around the store in excitement or just sit and admire the beautiful space in silence.

This week has been crazy busy. It is the end of the semester for me, which means handing in a whole bunch of assignments and studying for exams. The whole week, I have been looking at my bare hands writing on my computer, trying to finish up everything in time which got me thinking and craving some arm candy, after all diamonds are a girls best friend (or so they say). The wonders of Chen Man. How can you not get lost in the wonderful world of Chen Man's surreal imagination. I got introduced to the talented photographer while browsing through Mac's special editions counter. I bought the beauty powder (pictured below) and since then I am hooked. Partly because of the packaging, partly because of the product, but mostly because of the image (the very first image above) that accompanied the collection.

How amazing are these garden pieces by Mackenzie Childs! It's like Alice in Wonderland comes to life into your garden and and becomes the love child of Missoni and Morocco. I LOVE the moss detail on the stool above, it's like the furniture germinated into the elements and the two became one. Essentially, this is a love affair of patterns, textures, and Arabic elements. It's like you become the caliph of your own garden.

This is the Fugate family of Kentucky, they, as you can see, have BLUE skin! This is actually a real photograph (photoshop did not exist in the 1800s). All this time I thought the Smurfs and Avatars were the only ones with blue skin. The Fugates had a sickness called Methamoglobinemia, which is a disorder characterized by the presence of a higher than normal level of methemoglobin in the blood.

Paul Karason (above) rubbed collodial silver on his face which, as a result, turned his skin blue. ( Not to be inappropriate, but doesn't he resemble Papa Smurf?) I wonder what colour he turns when he tans.

I actually find these people fascinating. Could you imagine having blue skin? How horrible but cool at the same time. I would always dress like Smurfette.

Le Train Bleu

This is an image from the 1924 ballet created by Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes with a story by Jean Cocteau. The costumes were designed by Coco Chanel and the curtain behind the dancers was painted by Pablo Picasso. The ballet is the child of all the artistic geniuses of the flapper era, it's bound to be amazing!

Snow Waving

Midieval Luxury

A couple of days ago, I finished writing my first Wikipedia entry for a class on Medieval art and architecture. My teacher is amazing, she makes the content so enjoyable! Basically, it describes and analyses the book of Hours of Queen Jeanne d'Evreux. Back in the fourteenth century, when this particular illuminated manuscript was produced, books were really expensive. Basically the price of an illuminated manuscript such as the one above, is an equivalent to the price of a Rolex watch today, if not five. Jeanne received it as a gift from her husband Charles IV, sadly, he died only three years after the book was produced. I love the fact that back then, luxury was very much connected to education and devotion to God, the size or karat value of a diamond did not matter as much as it does today. I am actually quite proud of myself, which is a pretty unexpected ramification of the process. I spent a long time researching and reading journal articles, books, and so on so that the content was actually backed up by research.
