This post will be a free watercolor lesson on creating a beautiful dark background to support a rose.

Here is a photo of the rose with still the white of the paper. I won’t talk about the colours on the rose in this post – I will do this in a separate post.

Pink Rose Bud painting – watercolor by Doris Joa (work in progress)

I am using 340 Lb watercolor paper from Arches. My technique is most wet on dry – which means wet paint on dry paper. To learn more about this just check this lesson about Watercolor Technique

The first image shows the pink rose bud in progress. The rose isn’t finished yet but I decide always at a special point to start with the background. Because when the background is added I already know that I have to darken colours, to soften edges, to maybe lift some colours on the rose.

Step 1 – adding a yellow underwash

On the white background I added a wash of yellow. I used Aureolin Modern (a transparent yellow). I love this clean yellow. Let it dry.

Why do I add at first a yellow underwash?

When creating my backgrund I want to have a very rich coloured background. I also want that at some points the yellow shines through my next layers of colours, which will also be transparent colours. This adds more depth to the painting. For this painting I don’t like a plein dark background. I want the feeling that there is more in the background  – some atmosphere. And the first yellow underwash helps me to achieve this.

In the next photo you can see that I added a first dark wash over the yellow underwash.

I used the following colours:

• Anthraquinoid Red
• Winsor Green (blue shade) OR Phthalo Green
• Sap Green mixed with the colours above or use it alone in some areas
• Indigo

Indigo is a very dark and rich deep blue colour. So if you use this dark blue over the yellow underwash you know what will happen, right? It creates a dark greenish colour. As I want to have a very dark background this works perfect.

For a beautiful black you can mix Anthraquinoid Red with Winsor Green. You also can add some blue to this mix. If you vary these mixes you can decide if you want to have your dark color warmer (using more red) or cooler (using more blue or green).

Let this wash dry completely before you add another layer of color.

In the next photo you can see another wash of the same colours used as before. The painting is still wet and it needs to dry.

Is there an alternative?

Yes, there is. If you don’t like to work in this way you also can apply your colours as you go and let them mix on the paper. But then make sure that you add a lot of yellow, also some sap green and also your dark mix. If there are areas which are too dark you always can get warmth and lighter areas back when you add cadmium yellow light. This is an opaque colour. Opaque colours sit on the paper and if these washes are not too strong the underlayers will show through. This means you have also a wonderful effect in your background.

The Peony bud is painted on 340 LB watercolor paper and has a white background.

For the colours I used colours from Daniel Smith and Schmincke. Quinacridone Rose, Purple Magenta for the very cool areas, yellow, orange, Sap Green, Anthraquinoid Red and cobalt violet.

Doing this painting was an adventure. I got this bouquet of flowers for my last birthday and since I love this kind of country roses very much I decided to take some photographs. I took the flowers outside and placed them on our wood table in the garden and made a lot of photos. We as artists know that rarely one photo works. That is the reason why I always do many photos to make sure I have pictures from all angles in the same light.

Also I wanted to create a different mood. Not a daylight mood because this would have meant that I had to paint a light table and maybe a much lighter background.  I started with painting the roses and decided about the background later. At first I tried the a light wood table and light background. But I didn’t like it. I thought the roses would need a different atmosphere and did many more washes to get more darks in the background. Many more layers of colours on the wood table were also needed to get a rich dark wood texture.

White Pink Paeony

I finally finished my Paeony Flower Painting in Watercolor. In my previous post I was unsure about how to do the background. A light background always looks very elegant especially when having a white flower. But of course a dark background adds some drama to the painting and makes the flower pop. And I prefered to add a darker background to support the Paeony Flower.

But I didn’t want to paint only a dark background. I also wanted to suggest some leaves but without a lot of details.

To paint this background I made the following steps:

Step 1:
At first I painted some leaves with some yellow and green. I used Aureolin yellow and Sap Green. I wanted to keep the leaves very light in colour.

Step 2:
I then added darks around this leaves. For the darks I mixed green with red (here I recommend mixing Phthalo Green with Anthraquinoid Red) and a touch of blue. Here and there I only added some Aureolin yellow between this dark mixes to suggest more leaves. I also added some splashes of red into this background.

This all are many layers. When all was dry I had to do step 2 more often to create those darks I wanted to have.

Step 3:
It also is important to let this colours flow over the leaves which I painted in step 2. Because the leaves must be integrated in the background. I wanted to have a very soft background and no detailed leaves. It is important to have soft edges on the leaves. Hard edges would put our attention there and I didn’t want to have this. I want to have the full attention on the paeony.

I think this backround fits perfect to this Paeony Flower Painting. The Paeony is very detailed and also light in colour. The background adds drame due its darkness but also creates atmosphere with having suggested leaves there.
