I just finished this new watercolor painting of a young girl at the ocean. It is painted on 640 g (300 Lb) coldpressed watercolor paper from Arches and it is a full sheet painting (size is around: 56 x 75 cm , around 22x 30 inch).

Unfortunately I haven’t any title yet. I would love to hear your suggestions. I just had fun doing this painting as I just love to paint water and the reflections and the naked feet walking over the sand.

“Summer Love”

This painting is done on 640 g (340 Lb) coldpressed watercolor paper from Arches. I absolutely love this paper. Most of the time I am working on the dry surface and it is also possible to work in layers to build up the richness of colours. I love this watercolor painting technique. For my portraits and figure paintings I am using different colours than I am using on my flowers and rose paintings and these colours work very well for me and so far I am very satisfied.

“Miriam” – Portrait study

This painting I did completely different. Usually when working with watercolors I am having my watercolor paper laying flat in front of me. But this time I placed my painting on an easel and worked on the heavy 640 g (300 Lb) cold pressed paper from Arches.

I did not wet the paper first – I immediately put my colours on the dry surface.  I also used less water and made my colour mixes stronger. This watercolor technique worked very well for me and gives a lot of control of what you want to do. Of course I also worked in layers where needed and I am amazed how much I liked working in this way. This study was completed in a very short time and I just love the result.

I am just excited to see all the new original oil and watercolor paintings painted by Susan Harrison-Tustain.

Susan has a big Exhibition this year: ‘Recollection’ and I just wish I could fly to New Zealand to see all this stunning artwork in real life. WOW she has created a fabulous collection of new paintings. A great highlight is to see the paintings in their frames!

My favorite paintings are ‘Liberty’ – the white pigeon, the door with the keys – how mysterious this is -, the red tulip -(here she has created a great lesson on how to paint red)  and the Stewart Island Robin. But this is just my mood today.

Yesterday my favorite paintings were the ‘Kaitiaki’ – painting, Rush Cottage and the Pisa Range Mountain painting.

I am curious which ones will be my favorite tomorrow.

“Daffodils with ladybug”

This Daffodil Watercolor Painting is one of my latest work.

The Daffodils with the ladybug remind of Spring and all of the promise it holds. To me Daffodils are the herald of summer as they bravely pop their heads above the ground nearing the end of winter. I wanted to capture that first glorious flush of blooms. I hope they make you smile too.

I especially love to paint the colour “white” in watercolor. These large white petals give a lot of possibilities to play with all the colours. Although we can see so many colours in my shadows, like green, yellow, orange, blue, red, purple it is amazing that we still “see” the colour white.

This is one of my latest Rose Paintings. It is a portrait of the Rose “Sangerhauser Jubiläumsrose” which I planted some years ago in my garden. I like the warm yellow pink colour of this rose and especially I love to describe the colours with watercolors.

Some days ago I ordered some new colours from Ken Bromley Art Supplies in U.K. The order was despatched at the same day and the colours arrived here in my studio within a short time. Of course I always love to get new colours and to try them out, but I especially liked that there was an extra note in the package which told me that my parcel was packed with care by Tony and he added the words “Happy Painting!“. I really liked this and I think this is a great customer service. Usually when I get packages only a bill is added to my products. But to get an extra note makes the package really special and it makes the customer feel special.

I too add always extra handwritten notes in each of my packages. For me each customer is special and I want that my customers feel so.

“Dreamy Afternoon”

I already did this painting a year ago, but I was never really happy with it. In the first version the shadows were looking wrong to me, I always thought they’d look dirty.
That is the problem with watercolor: Once you have the wrong color it is sometimes really hard to get the right color there. In my earlier version of this painting it was not possible. I used too much blue in the shadows and I didn’t like it. It was a strong blue and I was not able to make the shadow colour better.

Still I loved the idea of this painting I decided some weeks ago that I’d do this painting again. I wanted to describe how little girls enjoy themselves, how they can get lost in their own world, here and there playing and then they are tired and they simply sleep whenever they like and just at the place where they are. We adults rarely take this time for ourselves, always busy instead of simply enjoying an hour in the sun. Of course in my painting it is a wonderful place for a little girl in her beautiful pink dress to sleep, laying in the sun, the leaves are swaying in the breeze and the cozy blanket is just so inviting, the hat is just put aside and lays in the grass – the perfect moment for a dreamy afternoon.

I love to do my watercolor paintings on watercolor canvas. Since these canvas are not available here in germany I am making now my own stretched watercolor canvas. It is really easy to do and a big pluspoint is that you can make them using your favourite watercolor paper.

I just filmed a demonstration on how I am making my own watercolor canvas. I hope it will be helpful for you.

I can’t resist to have a rose painting going on. I just enjoy to paint roses too much. Beside all other paintings a rose must be there, too! This Pink Rose is so beautiful! The pinks are created with Permanent Rose and Purple Magenta. The inner of the rose glows with yellow and orange and pink and I just love the ruffled petals.

Do you also love to read magazines? What is your favorite magazine? I love “Gartenträume” (Garden Dreams).

Before I discovered my art passion I was reading a lot of magazines. There was no day when I did not held any magazine in my hands.

Since I am painting I don’t find a lot of time for them. Besides my family I spend each free minute on my art and all things around my art.

But there is still one magazine which I love to read.
It is a german magazine called “Gartenträume” (translated: Gardendreams). Oh, it is a wonderful magazine, printed on high quality paper, which shows photos of gardens from around the world, beautiful close up photos of flowers and roses and gives a lot of inspiration for your own garden and home and so much more. It is a quaterly magazine, and the issues are for spring, summer, fall and winter.
“Gartenträume” is really my absolute favorite magazine.
