Some flowers ask you to stop for a moment. These white roses grow in my own garden, and when they open together in high summer, I simply cannot walk past.

A whole cluster of blooms, golden centres, soft petals and little buds: for me, this is the feeling of a summer garden. I wanted to bring that feeling onto paper — including two small visitors who belong among the flowers.

I love the way a cluster of roses holds so many stages of a flower at once. One bloom is wide open, another still folds its petals around the centre, and a small bud waits between them. Together, they feel abundant and alive.

That is where The Heart of a Summer Garden began. These are roses from my garden, painted in watercolor as a little world of their own. The dark leaves gather around the pale flowers, allowing the light on their petals to shine.

A bee and a fly: the little visitors belong here

A summer garden is never only flowers. There is movement between the blossoms, a quiet coming and going, and tiny details that reward a closer look. That is why the bee and the green fly felt so right in this painting.

A little movement among the petals

The bee brings a sense of movement into the painting. Its fine wings and small striped body make you look again at the soft folds of the surrounding petals.

A tiny green point of interest

The fly is another small discovery. Its green shimmer catches the eye against the pale petal. These visitors belong to the garden just as much as the roses do; for me, they make the scene feel more natural and alive.

This photograph gives you a little glimpse of the painting as it developed in my studio. I enjoy moving between the whole arrangement and the smallest details — looking at how the flowers sit together, then returning to a fold in a petal or a tiny visitor.

White roses are full of colour. In this watercolor, creamy yellow and warm apricot meet soft pink, lilac and cool blue-grey shadows. Those gentle changes give the petals their shape while keeping the flowers luminous.

Watercolor Rose: Creating Depth with Glazes and Edges

A rose can be carefully painted, with beautifully shaped petals and detailed leaves, and still need something more. In this painting, that something was depth. I want to show you how changing the background, the colour relationships and the edges changed the way the whole rose is seen.

These two photographs show my actual watercolor before and after the changes. The earlier image has a lighter blue background and more clearly described foliage. In the later image, some of those leaves have become quieter, while the rose stands out more strongly.

The photographs were taken separately, so lighting and camera colour may also differ. Look especially at the quieter foliage, the changing edges and the stronger separation between the rose and its surroundings.

Letting the background step back

In the earlier stage, many of the leaves were quite distinct. Their outlines and veins drew attention alongside the flower. I wanted the surrounding greenery to support the rose and give it space.

I deepened parts of the foliage with dark mixtures of Phthalo Green and Anthraquinoid Red, also using Sap Green and Payne’s Grey bluish. These mixtures gave me varied darks, with shifts between warmer and cooler areas. A background feels more alive when its shadows contain colour.

The changes were selective. Some leaves remain recognisable; others recede into shadow. This creates different planes rather than a single band of equally prominent foliage.

Keeping warmth within the shadows

I introduced Aureolin Yellow into wet areas to bring warmth into the greens. Those small warmer passages help the dark background retain life and variation. I also used Phthalo Blue for a blue glaze in the sky area, keeping an eye on its value so the sky would not become too dark.

What matters is the relationship between these areas: the cooler blue, the warm and cool greens, and the light petals. The background can become deeper while still holding light and colour.

Lost edges, found edges and soft transitions

A found edge is clearly visible. It separates one shape from another and can draw the eye. A soft edge is still visible, but the transition is gentle. A lost edge disappears where neighbouring shapes become similar in colour or value.

In the revised background, some leaf edges merge into the surrounding washes. Other edges remain clear. That variety helps the foliage sit at different depths and gives the eye places to rest. Around the rose, the changing relationship between a light petal and the darker greenery also makes its form easier to read.

Reading the labels: “Found edge” means a clearly defined edge; “Lost edge” means an edge that blends into its surroundings; “Glazes create depth” refers to transparent layers that change colour and value. The blue-glaze label illustrates a cooler sky; in my painting I watched carefully that this area did not become too dark.

A question to ask when a painting feels flat

Before adding more detail, take a moment to look at the whole painting. Are the flower and the leaves asking for equal attention? Could a few softer edges or a quieter passage in the background give the main subject more space?

For this rose, the surrounding shapes made a substantial difference. Bringing some forward and letting others fade gave the flower a stronger presence, while keeping the fluid character of watercolor.

When a Rose Painting Needs a Little More Time

Sometimes I think a painting is finished — and only later realise that I stopped a little too soon.

Roses have always fascinated me. I love the way their petals unfold, how warm colour hides in the centre of a pale bloom, and how much there is to discover in a single flower. That fascination was the beginning of this watercolor.

Taking a step back

When I first put the painting aside, I thought I had taken it far enough. Looking at it again with some distance, I could see that the roses still needed more depth around them.

I can be impatient sometimes. After spending a long time on a painting, I reach a point when I want to move on to something else. I often have two or three paintings in progress, and a pause gives me the chance to return with fresh eyes. This rose painting reminded me how useful that can be.

Deeper greens, delicate details

I returned to the foliage and strengthened the greens, letting the darker areas give the pale petals more presence. I refined details and contrasts, taking the time I had not given the painting before.

Then two tiny ladybirds joined the scene: one resting on a leaf, the other beside a rosebud. They are small enough to reward a closer look, yet they bring a lovely sense of life to the painting.

A quiet summer moment

The changes paid off. The richer background supports the flowers, and the little visitors make this feel like a moment in a living garden. I have called the finished painting A Quiet Summer Moment.

It also holds a small reminder for me: putting a painting aside does not have to mean giving up on it. Sometimes a little distance is exactly what helps me see the next brushstroke.

How to Change the Mood of a Watercolor Painting: Eden Rose

How a watercolor rose found its atmosphere

Sometimes a painting is nearly finished, yet it still does not feel quite like the place you remember. My Eden Rose changed when I followed that feeling and let the shadows grow deeper.

At first, I was looking closely at the roses themselves: the folds of the petals, their warm blush and cooler violet notes, and the play of light across two generous blooms. But I wanted the air around them to belong to the painting as well.

The turning point

Letting the darks do their work

I returned to the foliage and the darker areas around the flowers. As I built up those passages, the pale shapes of the roses began to glow more strongly. Their edges no longer floated in an even background; they had depth and a place to emerge from.

In the cooler colour and the softened transitions, I began to see something like mist rising from the garden. I did not set out with a recipe for fog. It was a sensation that appeared as the painting changed, and I wanted to follow it.

Suddenly the painting felt damp to me — as though the morning air had settled on the petals.

Small details, a different mood

When the dewdrops made sense

Once that atmosphere was there, the water droplets felt completely natural. A few glints on the petals and leaves brought the cool morning air into focus. I kept the lightest marks small so they would feel like moisture catching the light, not decoration placed over the roses.

That is what fascinates me about painting. A deeper shadow can make a flower luminous; a tiny drop of water can make the whole scene feel freshly alive.

Look a little closer

A visitor among the leaves

There is also a little ladybird tucked into the leaves. It is easy to miss at first glance, and that is exactly why I enjoy it: a quiet discovery for someone who comes closer to the original. Along with the dewdrops, it gives this painted garden a little life of its own.

Following what the painting needs

For me, this was not a matter of adding more detail everywhere. It was about noticing what was missing and changing the relationship between light, shadow and colour. The roses remained the heart of the painting, but the atmosphere gave them a story.

I am glad I went back into those darks. The finished Eden Rose now has the feeling of a quiet morning after rain — and the little ladybird is still there if you look for it.

How to Paint Roses in Watercolor: Where the Glow Begins

How do you make a painted rose seem to glow? For me, the answer begins long before the darkest details. It starts with looking carefully at the light and letting the first transparent wash shine through the layers that follow.

When I paint a rose in watercolor, I rarely reach for just one pink. I look at the warm color near a petal’s base, the cooler turn of a fold and the shadow where one petal overlaps another. The flower takes shape through these small decisions.

How to Paint Roses with Light and Depth

In this pink rose study, I began with a yellow underwash in selected areas. After it had dried, I built the pinks with Permanent Rose. Anthraquinoid Red warmed and deepened certain passages; Cobalt Blue and Purple Magenta brought cooler notes into the shadows. A touch of Sap Green in the red mixture helped deepen some of the darkest places.

I work in thin layers and treat each petal as its own shape. Keeping the brightest paper free of paint, while giving the overlapping petals deeper color, helps the rose feel three dimensional. Even a white rose has colored shadows, and a dark background can make its pale petals sing.

My favorite reminder: you do not have to finish every petal at once. Let a wash dry, step back and see how the light moves through the flower before you add another layer.

White Peony Watercolor Painting – The Story Behind the Artwork

There is something about white peonies that has always fascinated me. Their abundance of petals, the subtle changes of color and the way light moves through the flower make them endlessly interesting to paint.

At first glance, a white peony may simply appear white. But when I look more closely, I see so much more: delicate touches of warm cream, soft pinks, cool blue-grey shadows and reflected colors from the surrounding leaves. These quiet variations are what give a white flower its form and luminosity.

As with all of my paintings, this white peony watercolor painting was created from my own reference photographs. Working from my own photographs is very important to me. It allows me to return to a moment I have actually experienced and to make my own decisions about composition, light and atmosphere rather than simply reproducing someone else’s image.

Painting Light, Petal by Petal

One of the things I love most about painting white flowers in watercolor is that the white itself is largely created by what happens around it. I preserve the light of the watercolor paper and gradually build the delicate shadows and colors that describe each petal.

For this painting, I worked slowly in transparent layers. Some edges remain soft and almost disappear, while others become more defined. Little by little, the flower begins to emerge from the paper.

The surrounding greens and darker passages became especially important. As they grew richer and deeper, the white peony seemed to become more luminous. I love this stage of a painting – the moment when the contrasts begin to work together and the flower suddenly feels alive.

For me, painting a flower is not simply about recording how it looks. It is about capturing what made me stop and look at it in the first place.

Painting a Hibiscus in Watercolor

Painting a Hibiscus in Watercolor is a wonderful way to explore rich color, soft transitions and the delicate details that make a flower feel alive.

For this painting, I was especially drawn to the beautiful changes of color within the petals – from soft pinks and violets to the deeper, warmer reds around the center of the flower.

Rather than trying to finish a petal in one wash, I like to build the color gradually. Transparent layers allow me to deepen the shadows while keeping the lighter areas luminous. I watch closely where an edge needs to stay soft and where a slightly stronger edge helps to describe the shape and movement of a petal.

Sometimes the most beautiful part of painting a flower is simply taking the time to observe all the subtle colors that are already there.

Building Color and Depth in a Hibiscus in Watercolor

What fascinates me most when painting a Hibiscus in Watercolor is the variety of colors within the petals. Soft pinks and violets meet warmer reds, while the light areas give the flower its delicate and luminous appearance.

I build the petals gradually with transparent watercolor layers, deepening the color where I need more shadow and form while allowing the lighter areas to remain fresh. I also pay close attention to the edges – some stay soft and almost disappear, while others are more defined to describe the folds and movement of the petals.

Christmas Gift? – A Little Early for Christmas?

Already thinking about a Christmas gift? I know – summer is not quite over yet, and somehow the first Christmas treats and decorations are already appearing in the shops. It always feels a little too early. And yet, when it comes to finding a truly personal Christmas gift, perhaps starting early is not such a bad idea after all.

I have always loved gifts that feel as though they were chosen for one particular person. Not simply something bought because a present was needed, but something that says: I saw this and thought of you.

That is one of the reasons I created my Little Floral Poems – small original watercolor paintings, each one painted individually by hand. Roses, tulips, daisies, poppies and little pieces of nature become tiny works of art that can find their own special place in a home.

And perhaps that is what makes an original painting such a lovely christmas gift. There is only one. The brushstrokes, the transparent watercolor washes, the tiny irregularities and unexpected mixtures of color belong to that one painting alone. No second piece will ever be exactly the same.

A Christmas Gift – or Simply a Little Thank You

Of course, a small original painting does not need Christmas as a reason. It can be a birthday gift, a little thank you for someone who is always there when you need them, a gift for a mother or grandmother, a dear friend – or simply something beautiful you choose for yourself.

Sometimes the smallest gifts are the ones that feel the most personal. And I love the thought that one of my little paintings might be given to someone who will unwrap it, find a place for it in their home and enjoy it for many years.

Small Treasures – and Something a Little Bigger

My Little Floral Poems are wonderful when you are looking for a small, personal gift, but original art does not have to be tiny. Sometimes a very special person – or a very special occasion – calls for something a little bigger.

In my collection you will also find larger original watercolor paintings in different sizes. A flower someone particularly loves, colors that remind you of their home, or simply a painting that immediately makes you think of that person can turn an original artwork into a wonderfully individual christmas gift or other gift.

And there are so many ways to live with small paintings, too. One Little Floral Poem can stand beautifully on its own, while two or three can be combined to create a little collection. They can be placed on a shelf or small easel, hung individually, or arranged together on a wall. I love how completely different combinations can develop simply by bringing different flowers, colors and formats together.

A Christmas Gift Chosen with Time and Thought

Perhaps that is the nicest reason to start thinking about Christmas and a special christmas gift a little earlier. A personal christmas gift does not have to be found in a hurry during the last busy weeks before the holidays. You can take your time, look around and wait until something simply feels right.

Whether it is one of my Little Floral Poems, a larger original painting or perhaps something created especially with a certain person in mind, I believe art can be a wonderfully personal Christmas gift – something chosen not only for the moment it is unwrapped, but to be enjoyed long afterwards.

And of course, you do not have to wait for Christmas. Original art can be a birthday present, a thank you, a surprise for someone you love – or simply a gift to yourself. Sometimes we do not need a special occasion to bring something beautiful into our lives.
