Their latest single "Toe Cutter- Thumb Buster" makes me as proud as ever of this band, and although I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole record Floating Coffin yet, I have reason to believe it's just as magical as anything else they've created. My inspiration for my fabric designs often comes from noticing pops of color in unexpected places. Our bi-weekly produce delivery came yesterday and I couldn't help but notice the vibrant colors of the rainbow chard. I love it when things from nature are colors that seem unnatural. The vibrant lemon yellow and magenta were stunning with the persian green greens.

It was so nice to have my partner in crime back. He just makes all of the usual day to day tasks so much more fun. This weekend those tasks included gardening, running errands and prepping for our Mother's Day guests.

We hosted my Mom, Grandma, two Aunts, one Uncle and one cousin for a late lunch of tacos and pomegranate margaritas. It was great to get everyone together to enjoy the sun breaks and the yard I've been busting my rear on.

The Huffington Post featured my Mom's Day table from two years ago (above) and that motivated me to put something fun together for this party too. We bought my Mom a gift certificate to Skye Nursery and I couldn't resist their amazing selection of succulents and tiny little teracotta pots.

I added a cake stand for height and some of my recent treasures (vintage apples, spotted eggs, and chess pieces) to add some unexpected fun to the table.

I hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day weekend!

I live in Wallingford, home of the baby stroller and artisan sock boutique, so I don't find myself walking around the area that frequently as there's little to do that's "my scene."
However, everything changed last week when I was hooked into stopping for a refreshing beverage on my way to the grocery store, thanks to an enticing sandwich board advertising a horcata iced latte. HOLY MOLY, do yourself a favor and spend your well-earned $3.00 on one. It'll revolutionize your coffee experience. I haven't dabbled in any of the cuisine at TNT yet, but if any of the food is half was delicious as their coffee I would imagine that it'll be just as sacred of an experience. Highly recommended!

Since we checked in last (aka 6 million years ago) A LOT has happened. Some of it cool (I went to NY, Molly to San Francisco) and some of it not-so-cool (I had random surgery tail bone surgery and couldn't walk for 5 days) but the most exciting of all: It's starting to feel like SPRING! I even had to stop and get sunscreen yesterday because I was out running errands and could feel my face GETTING BURNT, which (needless to say) is a rarity. What better way to welcome the northern light then cyber window shopping for weather appropriate knicknacks?

Kiddie Pool

Is it embarrassing that I really want one of these? I'm somehow justifying the waste of water via lusting after a kiddie pool versus an adult sized one.

Glass Straws

I've written about straws before because they are one of the most fun and functional items out there. They would look so cute with a fancy lil cocktail and a book the porch, no?

Speaking of cocktails, how irresistible are these recipes for ICED COFFEE COCKTAILS, care of Sprudge.com?

SHORTERALLS

What is more pleasant and perfect than a good old fashioned pair of shorteralls? I can't get enough.

My boyfriend has been working late these days, and he's usually the meal conceptualizer or at least spearheads the major cooking that occurs in the kitchen. Additionally, an apple with peanut butter or a bowl of cereal totally suffices for me as a proper dinner. However, not only do I love cooking, it feels really good and usually results in leftovers! Which can be consumed again! Here are some favorite dishes of mine.

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Photo and recipe from rachelcooks.com

I don't understand why Brussels Sprouts get such a bad wrap, but somehow it took me 5+ years to sincerely say I enjoyed them. Now, however, I can proudly state that they are one of my preferred veggie choices and a staple in foods I keep around the house. VIVA LA BRUSSELS SPROUT!

The easiest and most delicious way to prepare them takes less than 30 minutes, and requires minimal effort (A+)
NEEDS:
Kale
Brussels Sprouts
Olive Oil
Vinegar
Salt
Pepper
Honey
Chopped Garlic
Baking Pan
Drizzle base of olive oil on cookie sheet. Chop sprouts and kale finely and season to your liking with salt and pepper. Mix honey, oil and vinegar in with veggies, making sure that it is evenly distributed. Toss in oven at 250 degrees and stir every once in a while, until veggies are slightly browned and soft. SO GOOD!

LENTILS VEGGIE MAC & CHEESE

Photo and recipe from weelicious.com

Dried lentils and mac and cheese are two other staples that often occupy my kitchen cupboard. After over a year of veganism, I am a littttle burnt out on them as a primary protein at this point, but when added to an existing meal I am all about it! This one is insanely easy, as well.

NEEDS:
Box of mac and cheese
Cooked lentils
Garlic
Whatever veggie you have laying around (broccoli is really good in this but anything will taste great)
Extra cheese if you're into that sort of thing
Get a mini stir fry going whilst making mac and cheese, and mixed together once macaroni is drained and the cheese is being added. BAM! You just created a vaguely healthier, most definitely hardier version of the great american meal.

FRIED PEANUT BUTTER TEMPEH

Photo and recipe from seriouseats.com

Tempeh is a soy product that is less significantly less boring than tofu. (Opinion statement!). I would liken fried tempeh to that of a fried animal protein because of its how well flavor sticks to it, which is great because it is 100% flavorless otherwise.

NEEDS:
Tempeh
Peanut Butter
Mustard
Hot Sauce
Mix in equal parts peanut butter, mustard and hot sauce in small bowl. Le tempeh marinate in said concoction for a few hours, and when it's looking totally saturated, fry it up and add to whatever other stuff you've got around- I really like it with fresh veggies like spinach or lettuce and some quinoa. Congrats! You've made a delicious meal.
Duncan has been working for Shark Pig (maker of amazing wedding videos) so it has been especially tough for him to focus on our video after a long day of other people's weddings. But it's done and I feel so lucky to have such a talented husband! Hope you enjoy it!

Perrodin Supply Company is an indie mom and pop shop located in Northwest Arkansas. Their whimsical and delicate collection of fine paper goods, wooden cut outs and detailed stamps are made by hand by Jonathan and Amber Perrodin. A sad and scary accident occurred in late February whilst Jonathan (the sole carpenter of the shop,) was working on some pieces, and left him with an amputated index finger.

They've managed to make the sweetest lemonade with the lemons they've been handed, however, and have created a fundraiser consisting of a hefty handful of amazing products (art, accessories, jewelry, housewares, etc) from supportive and innovative artists around the country (including Vivi Dot,) whose proceeds in entirety will go directly towards the medical bills of the Perrodin Family. The good news for you? The best way to help is to SHOP!

We had a photo booth set up at our wedding where the participants could capture their photos themselves with a remote. It was right by the dance floor so the party often spilled over into the frame. It lead to over 1,500 photos of fun. Speaking of fun, here are two fun facts for you:

1) I learned that this effect is called Pixilation. Wikipedia defines it like this- Pixilation (from pixilated) is a stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject in an animated film, by repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and changing pose slightly before the next frame or frames.

2) The white circles that are hanging in front of the brick are from the whole punched pieces of Vivi Dot packaging. I use a round scalloped punch for the packaging of my watch necklaces and I could never bring myself to throw the punched peice away. I'm so glad I didn't because I was able to sew them all together to add a little bit of three dimensional detail to the brick wall.

Hope you enjoy this little glimpse into our party!

Brick Blitz from Duncan Hooper.

Scratch that IT'S HERE! Getting ready for my prom party is going smoothly, if not a little all over the place (party planning is so #exhausting). Here are a few more additions to my list of party must haves of the recipe variety.

I've got a bottle of rum hanging out that I thinnnnnk is ready to be used. What says classic prom vibes better than some spiked punch? I found this awesome recipe care of sheknows.com:

3 strawberries plus 1 to garnish
3 slices of canned pineapple
ice
2 ounces white rum
1/2 ounce pineapple juice from the can
1/4 ounces simple syrup
Directions
Place the strawberries and pineapples into the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle until combined.
Add a handful of ice to the shaker and then pour in the rum, pineapple juice and simple syrup.
Shake the mixture vigorously to combine and then pour into a tall cocktail glass.
Served garnished with a strawberry.

What better way to top off at punch bowl than with the help of a heart shaped ice cube tray? Swooon.

I am freaking out over how easy these mini cherry pies are! I can't say I'm the most ambitious baker, especially when dwelling into realms of the unknown baking world, but I think I want to try to make these puppies. Pie dough, sugar, cherries and ricotta cheese? DONE. Check out the brilliantly simple recipe here, care of cakestudent.com.

I've already got a prom dress, but if that weren't a case you'd better believe that this would be the one I'd be workin', care of twotart.

In honor of this day of LOVE thought it would be appropriate to share this video featuring a little lady I adore- my niece, Audrey.

Duncan filmed this trip to our neighborhood park a few days after Christmas (just on his iPhone). He edited it together for those of us that don't get to see her often enough. I've watched it about 10 times already.

FUN! Needless to say, I find myself jonesin' for warmth all the time, especially the crisp and bright Spring weather. I know we're still in Winter mode, but let's think about Spring (it's 2ish months away!!!) for a hot second. I'm imagining gentle colors, ample picnic-with-a-book-in-the-park reading, and continuing to photograph every darn flower I come across. Here are a couple of crucial springtime finds I came across on Etsy.

I love caramel (especially the salted, dark chocolate variety), but I had never had anything quite like this. Peanut Butter, Matcha Green Tea, and Pumpkin Pie didn't sound like something I'd go for, but I was instantly hooked. My extended family had such a fun time doing an impromptu tasting of each kind after one of our many holiday feasts. Here's a pic of the devoured caramels:

I recently ordered some special sweets for Valentine's Day and wanted to make sure to spread the word about how awesome Sugarfina is while there's still time to receive your sweets before February 14th (you can view their shipping deadlines here). The packaging is so well done and the candy is beyond yummy.

Their candies come in three sizes petite, medium, and large.

Not a fan of Valentine's Day? May I suggest the Anti-Valentine's Day Gift Set including Plenty of Fish in the Sea (All-Natural Swedish Fish), Men are Pigs (Gummy Piglets) and Stop Kissing Frogs (Apple Frogs).

Sans the year I rattled off a trajectory of reasons why it's a useless capitalist scheme for major companies to make money, as long as I can remember- on years that I've been single OR dating someone- I've loved it. And sincerely, what's not to love about a holiday that exists soley to eat candy and shower your loved ones with attention? It's dreamy.

This year I'm planning a massive prom themed Valentines Day party (I never went to my prom, so this is a HUGE DEAL) and have been inundated with inspiring DIY crafts, treats, and ideas of all shapes and sizes. Here are a few of them, but check back as the event comes closer and I begin to craftin' and cooking. Don't forget that every day is a great day to shower your loved ones in adoration.

These brilliant doily votives were thought up by Christine Chitnis. Cute and simple!

I love me a good heart banner! I'm seriously into this lavender color as well.

It wouldn't be a prom unless there was a photobooth, amirite? I'm thinkin some cheesy props would add a little oomph as well.

It's been a hot minute (and by hot minute I mean over a month...) since I checked in last. I missed you! 2013 has been good to me thus far, and 2012 wrapped up preeeety well. Here are some highlights from the last month or so.

I just got back from a week in Puerto Rico, which was a vacation that consisted of fried meat with (literally) every meal, squealing at every iguana I saw while everyone rolled their eyes (they're basically the equivalent to squirrels in terms of NBD everywhere all the time creatures,) demolishing 4 books that I'd been meaning to read FOREVER, drinking teeny tiny 7oz beers on the beach, and grocery shopping at Walmart. There's ice cream for sale at every corner so I can honestly say my trip was pretty perf.

A few days before 2013, my boyfriend José and our mutual friend Kenneth signed a lease on a warehouse with a storefront with the intent to turn it into an art gallery/recording studio/show space. Needless to say, it's been a really cool process to watch. The past 3 1/2 weeks have been a flurry of ceiling painting, 4 am dinners, fervent emailing with landlords, electricians, and bands, and an UNREAL amount of support from friends and other venues in the community. Starting this month, I'm hosting a free monthly market featuring local vendors selling vintage clothing, records, art, crafts, and treats on the last Sunday of every month, and I would love to see you at the first one!

Nerd alert, but I'm crazy stoked on the bike I just bought! Way back when I was a fearless teen I rode my bike in little dresses to school every morning, but slowly let myself get intimidated by riding around. I've decided to (slowly, surely) get comfortable on a bike again. Big ups to 20/20 Cycle for being the coolest, kindest bike shop in Seattle. I also ordered a hot pink cheetah print helmet which should be arriving this week, so I'll be riding in STYLE. Obviously.

There are a lot of things I'm looking forward to in the coming months, including a birthday weekend in Portland, a trip to NY in March, food to cook, crafts to make, some Vivi Dot designs to finalize and create, and whatever adventures create themselves. Happy 2013 to you!

Tonight I'll be watching 200 Cigarettes while I get ready for an evening of fun (I watch it every NYE). We're having dinner with friends, will make a stop at a party and then head back to our house to drink pink champagne and watch the fireworks on the top of the Space Needle from the view at the end of our block. A few traditions, good food, great friends and sparklers at midnight sound like the perfect evening to me!

It's been a fantastic year for me and for Vivi Dot. Lily joined the team, we remodeled our kitchen, Duncan and I celebrated our first year of wedded bliss and so much more. If you're interested in looking back on our year I think the best way to do so is through Instagram.

While it's fun to look back on all the awesomeness of 2012 I'm also really excited as I look on to the new year ahead. We're working hard on a bunch of fun new designs that will be released at the POOL Trade Show in February. We're also in the beginning stages of site redesign that we're super excited to see come to life.

I had an eye appointment last week and confirmed what my tired eyes were telling me- I need glasses for computer and other up close work. I guess staring at a computer screen only to switch gears and assemble hundreds of necklace chains has finally caught up with me. The good news is I'm super excited about my newest accessory. The colorful specs in the photo above are what I chose.
I'd like to take a minute to shout out a big, huge thank you for all of your support in 2012. Your purchases, your tweets, and your online and offline friendships mean a great deal to me. Thanks for stopping by here and for being interested in what we're up to!

I hope you have some fun plans for this evening and are excited for what lies ahead in 2013.

I've been wanting to add gold accents to solid fabric dots for a while now and I figured with New Year's Eve around the corner there's no better time than now.

So far there are two options with various colors available in each style. The Lexington Necklace features three buttons painted with geometric shapes. The gold plated chain is extra shiny and festive.

The flower necklaces feature a solid colored button that's also hand painted with an eye catching metallic gold paint. It is surrounded by gold plated petals with strong linear details that pick up the light beautifully.

Don't forget that today is the last day to place your orders for pre-Christmas delivery! Hope your holiday festivities are bringing lots of cheer to you and yours.

Every year I hear myself telling someone that this is the year I'm going to go with the proverbial flow and not worry about what I'm doing that night, but every year around this time I start asking everyone what their plans are, sharpening my glitter eyeliner pencil, wondering what time I have work on New Years Day, etc. And in the grand scheme of relatively pointless holidays that we celebrate, it sincerely does make sense to me that this one should be celebrated wholeheartedly. What better way to bring in the New Year then surrounded by friends and family in a fancy outfit with a whole lot of booze?
Here are some crucial NYE props sure to provide a party-centric night.

Dot a Hold On Me Dress (via Modcloth)

My wardrobe is relatively dress-centric as is, but there are definitely certain times that I want to up my dress game a little bit without going all out. I love that this dress is on the casual side of formal, but could totally get played up with the right shoes. Plus it'll look just as sweet under a wool sweater and a huge coat, which is My Life For the Next 5 1/2 months.

Mason Jar Sippers (via Butter Home)

These super cute mason jars would be perfect to fill with a lil' bubbly. Bonus points for the equally precious paper straws, sold separately.

Leopard print nail decals (via Pretty Girly Girl)

I was born a nail biter and will (probably) die a nail biter so generally speaking any attempt at sprucing up my nails is a total waste of time, but I LOVE how these nail decals look and virtually see them everywhere. Stick em on and party hard!

Vivi Dot Necklace (via Vivi Dot, duh)

Molly came up with these hand painted designs a few weeks ago and I am FREAKING OUT over them. If there's a better way to add a little last minute oomph to an outfit, I'd like to hear it.

What are your crucial NYE party accessories this year?

The kitchen also had chicken themed decor. It was charming, but so opposite of our style. We were excited to dig in. In fact, we ripped up the pink carpet within about 3 minutes of getting the keys and walking through the door. Duncan refinished the hardwood floors beneath the pepto pink carpet the week before we moved in.

Now for a few 'middle' photos. We lived in our house for a year before the remodel so here you can see a bit more of the kitchen during that time. We really didn't mind the look of the kitchen (minus the chicken wall paper), but there wasn't nearly enough storage or counter space.

Here's one of the two walls we removed.

Now for the exciting stuff! We opened up the entire space by taking down the walls that separated the kitchen from the dining and living room. This required a new beam that we left exposed and posts that go down into the foundation (in the basement).

The black and white floor was a must. Duncan and I love dancing in the kitchen and we've always dreamed about having an awesome black and white checkerboard floor. We put our own twist on it by doing rectangle tiles instead of squares. We figured the shinier the better and went with porcelain tile. The surround sound speakers in ceiling are awesome for dance parties too.

The countertops are granite, black pearl granite to be exact. We went with white subway tiles with gray grout for the back splash. The cabinets are Ikea (we saved big with their annual kitchen sale).

We kept the sink in the same location and kept the existing windows as well (both big money savers). I am so in love with our huge single basin sink. It's amazing! The faucet with touch technology is one of our favorite upgrades.

I have been lusting after a vibrant vintage pendant light for a while and the stars aligned just at the right time with this find. We removed the gold chain to update it a bit. It casts an amazingly warm glow over our dining room table.

We have plans to liven up the area under the bar overhang (behind where the stools are). I'll be sure to share that project once we tackle it.

We went with open corner shelving so we'd have space to display some of our favorite things and brighten up the otherwise all black and white kitchen.

We have so much more storage now it's incredible. All of our serving pieces are right upstairs next to the dining room instead of collecting dust in the basement. We also got a nifty outlet with two USB plugs and a regular outlet for all our charging needs.

And here's one last angle for good measure. Please note that gorgeous dining room table over on the left. That was Duncan's first adventure in furniture making and it turned out beautifully. It's made out of the wood from the original wood beam we replaced. The house was built in 1946 so it's pretty sweet to have used an old piece of reclaimed wood that has some history behind it. We bought the hair pins legs on Etsy from Hair Pin Love.

I'll be back soon with photos of the rest of the living room including our newly blue fireplace!
If you're in the Seattle area and are looking for a contractor I can't say enough good things about ours, Adam and Wally with Alder Building & Renovation. Shoot me an email if you'd like me to make an introduction!

The past couple of years I've noticed that once the holidays roll around it's increasingly difficult for me to come up with things I want because I either buy what I need, save up for what I want, or don't successfully save up (thus proving to myself that I probably didn't want it that badly anyway,) and promptly move on. That said, being that this season is of the gift giving variety, there are a few things I wouldn't mind owning..

'Talk to the Hand' Necklace

In God We Trust NYC makes really sweet and simple everyday jewelry, and I'm obsessed with this line of necklaces because the sweet little gold hearts offer really sassy (and sometimes sorta dirty) messages on them.

Royal Rose Cardamon Clove Syrup

Literally every item on the Catbird website is a dream to me. Known mostly for their jewelry and accessories, their site features a pretty impressive amount of homewares and various other magical odds and ends, including this delicious sounding syrup.

Knee Pad tights
