To increase your chances of picking good penny stocks, you need to do proper research and analysis on the companies that interest you. With these micro cap stocks in particular, you need to find ones that have high daily trading volumes because holding something that you cannot buy or sell quickly is worthless.

Whether investing in these risky but lucrative shares is right for you depends on your risk tolerance. So are you comfortable pursuing penny stock fortunes or would you prefer the security of government bonds?

Penny stocks which qualify as good penny stocks change everyday. Anytime you find a static list of so-called good penny stocks in a newsletter, on a blog or in a stock trading forum, you should be very skeptical. If you really want a list of hot penny stocks, you need to create your own list. Anything else is asking to be exploited.

The real challenge in penny stock trading is understanding that there can be some value in items like a penny stock newsletter or an application which anticipates breaking stocks. However, these should only be utilized as hints and ideas, not as your source for your trading decisions.

In many cases, penny stock newsletters are part of a pump and dump scheme or at least part of promoted stocks. This means they are trying to artificially hype a stock to temporarily increase its value while they hold it. As soon as it is pumped, they dump it for a profit. You might think you can just join in on the fun and dump it once it rises, too. If you think that, than you haven’t really traded with penny stocks.

However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try following along with a penny stock newsletter’s suggestions while you study the market and practice with paper trading (trading without money). Hopefully the newsletter will provide some lessons outside of just picks (if they don’t, be ultra skeptical). And over time you may develop an understanding for why some picks profited while others didn’t.

So beware of the hype and beware of the fraud. Use these various tools to better your knowledge and inform your decisions. But it is vital that you create your own list of good penny stocks by doing your own due diligence.

Finally, you should checking out public information, opinion and general stock analysis regarding that particular stock on message boards, stock investing websites and in online and printed stock review publications. You do need to be very careful with this step, however, as many small companies will pay individuals to make positive stock recommendations. Sorting through the hype and finding a true investment can be a challenging process at times. You certainly should not trust a single post on a message board or on twitter by an enthusiast of that certain penny stock, since it is very likely that may be a paid endorsement.

Penny Stocks in the United States parlance stands for a common stock that trades at less than 5 dollars a share. Penny stocks are also known by other names like micro-cap stock/ small caps/ nano caps and so on. These names are used inter changeably. It is to be understood that according to SEC definition the status of penny stocks is decided based on share price and not by marketing capitalization or the stocks’ listing service. A penny stock is normally listed for prices below 5 dollars for one share. Traditionally shares that trade at 41 or less per share are referred to as penny stocks but as per SEC definition it is $5.

In the United Kingdom market penny stocks are called as penny shares. They refer to stocks and shares in small cap companies – which are defined as companies with market capitalization less than 100 million pounds and/ or price of a share at less than one pound and having a bid/ offer spread of more than 10%. FSA – Financial Services Authority in the UK – issues risk warning as part of standard regulation on penny shares.

There are many investors who are new in the market or novices are attracted by the penny stocks because they are low priced and they are seen to have potential for fast future growth. This perception happens when the stocks are being promoted avidly. But if investors are not careful they can have severe losses because it is a fact that many penny shares have lost all their value in the long term. The penny shares have less liquidity, there is no formal financial reporting and the business is fraught with fraud. Because they lack liquidity these stocks are easy to manipulate. Similarly sudden demand or supply changes in penny shares can cause volatility in stock prices. Requirements to get quoted at OTCBB are bare minimum only. That is why SEC warns that such stocks are in the high risk investment category and ensures that new investors are aware of all the risks involved.
