Three Key Roles: Commanders, Visionaries and Entrepreneurs

Commanders either set goals or are given tasks which they accomplish through their mastery of other Human Beings -- they understand that the Laws of Physics and Human (mortal) Physiology are the only unbreakable rules, and thus Commanders function within very broad operating parameters.

They are expert at behavioral psychology, social engineering, project management and acting. "Acting" both in the sense of playing a role in a play, and in the sense of taking action to proceed toward the accomplishment of a mission.

Visionaries are persons of inspiration, insight and epiphany who have an idea (usually a powerful mental picture of an outcome or objective), which they are compelled to promulgage. They NEED to reveal the nature of what they see (and often, what they have seen) to someone else.

Entrepreneurs, in the truest sense, encompass many of the aspects of both Commanders and Visionaries.

Successful Entrepreneurs must be talent scouts -- they have to identify and choose Visionaries, Commanders, and numerous technologists, professionals and soldiers (or employees) in order to build a self-sustaining system (i.e., a business or an organization of some sort) that will not only achieve goals, but which will become self-sustaining, and synergistic - a "production machine" which is far greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Entrepreneurs are the catalysts in society who bring the appropriate assets together in order to construct something.

Entrepreneurs are the principal creators of value in our society.

Sustain Civilization - Pass The Torch Of Wisdom and Inspiration

You have the power, if you should choose to use it, to transform somebody's young life, or several young lives, or perhaps an intire generation with some well-timed, carefully thought-out words of encouragement.

If you are fortunate enough to be a mentor, teacher, coach, trainer or leader, you have the power, if you act wisely, to change the entire course of a young person's life with only a few words of encouragement or inspiration. It is a sacred obligation to pass on to others what we have learned -- it is part of keeping a culture -- an entire civilization -- alive.

The impression which you make on a young, formative mind is your immortality. It is a chance to exponentialize your influence to make positive changes in the world.

These people may be students, interns, campers, trainees, employees... it doesn't matter. If you are in a position of authority and power, use it for benefit of all of Humankind by touching another life, by sparking an idea, by kindling an inspiration; by paying a sincere compliment to a young, insecure soul in a world filled with insults and harsh penalties for nonconformity.

It is more than just noblesse oblige. It is more than the repayment of some karmic debt. It is a privilege to be invited into a person's life as a trusted advisor. It is an opportunity not to be squandered. It is your chance to initiate a chain of events which can lead to a positive change for our entire species.

Pass the torch. Don't leave this world without your indelible signature. If there is goodness inside of you, you must pass it on to someone who can further your mission. The torch must be kept burning.

It's simple. A wonderful performance (live, in concert) of a terrifically harmonious and highly catchy rock and roll tune by the group called the Cyrkle. It was a Top 40 pop radio hit. As you walked along Jones Beach, inhaling the fragrance of the ocean, Coppertone suntan lotion, and some acrid cigarette smoke, every transistor radio glistening in the summer sun was playing this song. People were tanning (it was considered healthy then), and lying on beach blankets.

In fact, by noon the beach was so incredibly crowded with blankets of all different colors and designs, each blanket almost touching the ones surrounding it, that when you looked back up at the shore from the water, it was as if a giant multicolored quilt had been placed over the pure, white sand. It seemed to hold us all together...

The song is "Red Rubber Ball," and it was my favorite song in sixth grade. I even listed it under "Favorite Song" in my sixth grade autograph book. It was an amazing year.

Gerald Thompson, my sixth grade teacher, told me that I had a "gift for writing" and encouraged me to write short stories and poems. After going through years of feelings of utter uselessness (I was constantly failing at my classes in school, being branded as either "dumb," a "daydreamer," or "learning disabled," and was always being threatened with being left back a year by my teachers), this man, with his insightfulness, sensitivity and kind words gave me a new lease on life.

It was the first year I ever received straight "A"s on my report card instead of the usual borderline or "F" grades. He believed in me so strongly that he actually convinced me to believe in myself. And I worked to prove both of us right.

Listen to "Red Rubber Ball," which I dedicate to my sixth grade teacher and first mentor, Gerald Thompson.

Teachers can change the course of entire lives. A teacher saved mine. Maybe one saved yours. Don't ever forget to say "thank you." While some teachers have no right to even associate with youngsters, others are dedicated custodians and trustees of the world's future, and of its most precious assets -- our children.

Getting From Nowhere To Somewhere - A Three-Step Approach

Only three components are truly necessary to achievement.

The first one is the seminal moment in the evolution or discovery of an idea, a motif or a notion. You visualize it. You look at where you are, and where you'd prefer to be. If you merely stop at the point of visualization, you will never achieve anything, and you never will have even communicated yout thought to someone who might be driven enough, or inspired enough to act.

The second one is where you express it to another person or group of people. Sometimes, if time is of the essence, you merely mouth the words to yourself. But words give a sort of life to thoughts. Words can lead to change; but only if those words translate into physical action.

The third is the one that is seldom reached; and when it is initiated, it is very commonly abandoned, or subjected to procrastination -- it is relegated to a position of less importance, and it recedes into the distance of memory.

Three steps:

1. THOUGHT

2. WORD

3. ACTION

Sometimes it is advisable to omit the second step. Sometimes it is advisable to push forward hard on the third step -- sometimes action must be sustained to achieve momentum -- to get the Jeep over the hill; and, then again, sometimes you take an action that produces a counter-reaction which requires that you change your course of action again. The process is dynamic, and constantly requires fine-tuning.

But without action, all of the visualization and conversation in the world will never truly create change. Let your words always be a call to action.Faithfully,

You must take action as soon as you know what needs doing.

There is always a point where excessive contemplation, consensus and growing inertia -- and that point is almost immediately after a brilliant idea is put into words.

Unless these words are put immediately into action, momentum is lost, and progress is actually reversed.

Here is something that I culled from a letter to me from Mark Joyner, the Founder of Simpleology (http://www.simpleology.com/):

Her name was Florence Nightingale, noted as the single most important pioneer of Nursing. She was born to a family of great privlege, but chose to spend her days tending to those wounded in battle. This quote bears repeating: "I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results."

p.s. "Action" is the very thing which differentiates entrepreneurs from dreamers, and leaders from followers. Think about it. Then say it (even to yourself). And then, while it is still in the forefront of your consciousness, before it is obscured by an accumulation of the mundane duties and thoughts of the day, and tucked away in the world of "almost," - take that action.

As they say at Nike - Just Do It.

Excuses are for cowards - people afraid of failure, afraid of success, or too indolent and contented with the cozy cocoon of politically correct and acceptable mediocrity to push the envelope, or open the shades and allow the light to come streaming in.

Dear Readers (Entrepreneurs, TNNWC Members, Colleagues, Business Leaders, Innovators, Project Managers, Commanders of Growing Companies, Braintenancers, Global Futurists, Internationalists, Marketers, Trend-Watchers, Trend-Setters, and Friends):

Subject: Douglas Castle Apologies for An Annoying Technical Glitch.

Q: Conspiracy or Catastrophic Compound Error?

It's simple. I am not certain whether it was due to a deadly conspiracy involving a collaborative effort among Twitterfeed, Hellotxt and Ping, or whether it was the result of an extremely unlikely catastrophic compound error (Do I sound paranoid? Are you talkin' to me?), but my status updates have been prodigiously posting themselves to many of my blogs without my knowledge or consent.

Since this began two days ago, I have had a "Blue Ribbon Panel" of "experts" working on solving the problem, and after much debate (mostly over who would be responsible to pay for lunches, and how much of a gratuity we should give the delivery kid), they have assured me that the mechanism has been repaired.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you, and I thank you for your patience and for reading me and my guest contributors.

Perspective - Your Character.

Note: The article which follows originally appeared in The BRAINTENANCE Blog, prior to its publication in HUMANITAS MAXIMUS and THE INTERNAL ENERGY PLUS Blog. Each of these blogs is a planet orbiting about the TNNWC website (the star) in a vast constellation in cyberspace. Management, leadership, decision making, messaging, buzzing, blogging, reputation management, customer satisfaction and any other factor which affects us either as individually-purposed Human Beings, or as members of entrepreneurial enterprises made up of others working collaboratively. Any topic relating to the aforementioned areas of focus is fair game.

Dear Cranial Vault Keyholders and Honorary Cardholders:

To be a team leader, a manager, or a coordinator, you must lead by example, and you must be prepared to demonstrate the integrity of your character and the legitimacy of the motivations which precipitate your actions. You are being watched by others. What's more, you are constantly making choices and introspectively (as well as retrospectively) examining your own motives. Others may have to deal with your style of leadership or management, but you have to deal with yourself.

This is going to hurt just a bit, but you might want to think about who you are given these real-life situations:

1) You're the owner of a start-up business venture, and you are pushing the speed limit while driving your hybrid car in the left-hand lane (in the US). You are about to meet a major equity investor. You're running late. The fellow in the car directly in front of you is wavering from lane to lane without signaling, and gently tapping on the brakelights at seemingly random intervals. You scream "You flipping idiot!"

2) Your boss likes to come into the office very early in the morning, and after dinnertime in the evening at random times. He clearly wants to see who is working (by his standard, which involves employees remaining at their desks for many hours), and enjoys this "surprise approach." It is Friday evening, and you have a dinner date with your soul mate -- but you are breking into a sweat at the thought of leaving before 6:30 pm. You may be quite late for your date, who will be waiting at a restaurant where you've made reservations.

3) You are a soldier on the field of battle. An unarmed man, terrified, is kneeling on the ground in front of you with his hands atop his head, on his knees, pleading for his life. You believe that he is a civilian. Your commanding officer stands behind you, puts his gun up to the back of your head, cocks the trigger and says, "Shoot him, private, or I'll shoot you."

4) You have quit smoking after many years. You have not had a cigarette in four months. In your top office desk drawer, you have an unopened pack of cigarettes that you haven't thrown away, and cannot seem to part with...

5) You abhor cheating on examinations. You are in a very competitive class. Most of the other students cheat. They are circulating an unlawfully purloined copy of tomorrow's upcoming exam, obviously without the professor's knowledge. You think to yourself, "I hate cheaters. These people are disgusting. But if I don't get a high grade in this course, I'll lose out on my chance to get into a great graduate school program..."

In each of the above-proposed scenarios, what do you do, and how does that make you feel about yourself? Think hard.

If you are in an entrepreneurial enterprise or small business this obligation is all the more critical, in how it is handled and it involves observation, communication, messaging, problem-solving and reporting on the status of any anticipated or actualized crisis.

While we'd all prefer to follow a strategic business plan and make incremental, expedient organized progress toward achieving our objectives, crises arise -- it is the nature of business (i.e., problem-solving to achieve an objective) to throw us the occasional crisis or catastrophe. Each one is a test.

If you either recognize or anticipate a crisis that you cannot immediately resolve yourself, you must:

1) Determine all parties within your company who may be affected, and how they may be affected;

2) Immediately notify the parties whose efforts could be a) damaged the most, and b) who are best equipped to handle the crisis so that those parties can make alternative arrangements, or attend to the critical issue. Information and intelligent, reasoned action can contain a small problem and keep it from being catapulted into a catastrophe. If the water is going to be turned off, if your web server is acting up, if the email system isn't going to be working, if payroll is going to tight, if a vendor is no longer qualified to supply your company or if an employee has been terminated, this message must be sent out to everybody affected with efficiency and immediacy.

3) Get the message out directly (yourself, without waiting for a committee meeting, or any other bureaucratic waste of precious time) via email, telephone, or text to all parties who will be affected or may be affected -- it is important, before a crisis ever emerges, that you have established multiple lines of communication to each member of your organization in case of emergency, and that you have a means of signalling that a crisis is in process, or that a crisis is anticipated;

4) Update all affected personnel of what actions are being taken to resolve the critical issue, what they can expect, and an estimated (conservative) timeframe for repair. This is what those folks in Human Resources refer to as "expectation management."

5) Remember - early, honest notice of a crisis, and updates until it is resolved minimize the organizational and emotional trauma of the crisis, the ancillary damage that might otherwise be caused by a lack of information or by misinformation. A crisis should not be a big secret - it should be competently contained until it can be remedied and business can go back to "work as usual." [ahhh.....]

The better that you manage a crisis, the less that it will pull you and your team or organization off course. In fact, well-handled crisis management doesn't create the desperation and/or confusion associated with negative surprises or exponentialized rumors -- it is more analogous to improvising lines in a play when you've forgotten part of the script.

How you handle a critical situation will determine if you are meant to lead, or merely menat to attend to the limited scope of your job. Going further, leaders are made because of how they have handled critical situations. For those of you who appreciate silver linings, a crisis represents an opportunity for leaders to develop and to be recognized.

You ask me why I chose to become the Chairman and CEO of an entrepreneurial enterprise -- specifically The National Networker Companies/ TNNWC Group, LLC. It might not be what you were thinking.

Being an effective and successful entrepreneurial leader is one of the most difficult challenges any individual can confront.

It involves self-growth (painful introspection, being aware of your own gifts and shortcomings, re-programming yourself with a future vision of your "best self" firmly set in your every thought, changing habits, learning to focus, learning to listen, exercising your memory and cognitive facilities and exercising constant self-assessment and self-control); professional growth ( learning how to 'read others,' learning how to communicate to different types of individuals in different sets of circumstances, developing mastery in several fields, learning how to lead as a moderator and a commander, but without being a dictator and alienating all of those whose cooperation you will ultimately need); and company growth -- using all of the skills developed in your self-growth and professional growth to become an organizational engineer, and to assess each Human Asset on your team in terms of his or her greatest strengths, highest and best application within the organization, and to attend to the optimal positioning of all of these individuals like the players in an orchestra.

Every day is opening night for you.

And there you stand, with your baton raised as soon as the curtains have gone up. It will be a live performance - and no matter what surprises lay in store each night of your "command in concert" series, you must somehow create beautiful harmony. You must keep the objective in sight, advance in meaningful, measurable increments, and must somehow maintain adaptive skills and flexibility in case any of the roads along the clearest path to your organizational vision are washed out or closed off. I joined TNNWC Group because I believed in the mission, and in my ability to carry it forward. What I never realized was just how difficult it would be to get from idea to actualization of objective.

Within these past three years, I have experienced more personal growth, professional growth and organizational growth than ever in my earlier careers as a director, officer or advisor to companies.

All of us are concerned about the possibility of radiation poisoning - we have been hyper-vigilant since the as yet unresolved catastrophe in Japan. Every atomic power plant throughout the US and the entire world is being looked at with increased scrutiny; shoppers are avoiding the purchase of products which may have come from areas or raw materials which may have been contaminated by radiation. These reactions to the fear of radiation poisoning are natural, and not wholly inappropriate.

There is a real danger associated with taking POTASSIUM IODIDE as a preventive measure (as it can help prevent irradiation of the thyroid gland in situations of very high radiation exposure risk). It should not be taken unless it is absolutely proven (by health experts) that the potential for exposure to seriously high levels of radiation is absolutely imminent.

You should only take potassium idodide (KI) on the advice of emergency management officials, public health officials, or your doctor.
There are health risks associated with taking KI.

What is Potassium Iodide (KI)?

Potassium iodide (also called KI) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine. Stable iodine is an important chemical needed by the body to make thyroid hormones. Most of the stable iodine in our bodies comes from the food we eat. KI is stable iodine in a medicine form. This fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives you some basic information about KI. It explains what you should think about before you or a family member takes KI.

What does KI do?

Following a radiological or nuclear event, radioactive iodine may be released into the air and then be breathed into the lungs. Radioactive iodine may also contaminate the local food supply and get into the body through food or through drink. When radioactive materials get into the body through breathing, eating, or drinking, we say that “internal contamination” has occurred. In the case of internal contamination with radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs this chemical. Radioactive iodine absorbed by the thyroid can then injure the gland. Because non-radioactive KI acts to block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it can help protect this gland from injury.

What KI cannot do

Knowing what KI cannot do is also important. KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. KI cannot reverse the health effects caused by radioactive iodine once damage to the thyroid has occurred. KI cannotprotect the body from radioactive elements other than radioactive iodine—if radioactive iodine is not present, taking KI is not protective.

How does KI work?

The thyroid gland cannot tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine and will absorb both. KI works by blocking radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. When a person takes KI, the stable iodine in the medicine gets absorbed by the thyroid. Because KI contains so much stable iodine, the thyroid gland becomes “full” and cannot absorb any more iodine—either stable or radioactive—for the next 24 hours.

Iodized table salt also contains iodine; iodized table salt contains enough iodine to keep most people healthy under normal conditions. However, table salt does not contain enough iodine to block radioactive iodine from getting into your thyroid gland. You should not use table salt as a substitute for KI.

How well does KI work?

Knowing that KI may not give a person 100% protection against radioactive iodine is important. How well KI blocks radioactive iodine depends on

how much time passes between contamination with radioactive iodine and the taking of KI (the sooner a person takes KI, the better),
how fast KI is absorbed into the blood, and
the total amount of radioactive iodine to which a person is exposed.

Who should take KI?

The thyroid glands of a fetus and of an infant are most at risk of injury from radioactive iodine. Young children and people with low stores of iodine in their thyroid are also at risk of thyroid injury.

Infants (including breast-fed infants): Infants need to be given the recommended dosage of KI for babies (see How much KI should I take?). The amount of KI that gets into breast milk is not enough to protect breast-fed infants from exposure to radioactive iodine. The proper dose of KI given to a nursing infant will help protect it from radioactive iodine that it breathes in or drinks in breast milk.

Children: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that all children internally contaminated with (or likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine take KI, unless they have known allergies to iodine. Children from newborn to 18 years of age are the most sensitive to the potentially harmful effects of radioactive iodine.

Young Adults: The FDA recommends that young adults (between the ages of 18 and 40 years) internally contaminated with (or likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine take the recommended dose of KI. Young adults are less sensitive to the effects of radioactive iodine than are children.

Pregnant Women: Because all forms of iodine cross the placenta, pregnant women should take KI to protect the growing fetus. However, pregnant women should take only one dose of KI following internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine.

Breastfeeding Women: Women who are breastfeeding should take only one dose of KI if they have been internally contaminated with (or are likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine. Because radioactive iodine quickly gets into breast milk, CDC recommends that women internally contaminated with (or are likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine stop breastfeeding and feed their child baby formula or other food if it is available. If breast milk is the only food available for an infant, nursing should continue.

Adults: Adults older than 40 years should not take KI unless public health or emergency management officials say that contamination with a very large dose of radioactive iodine is expected. Adults older than 40 years have the lowest chance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after contamination with radioactive iodine. They also have a greater chance of having allergic reactions to KI.

When should I take KI?

After a radiologic or nuclear event, local public health or emergency management officials will tell the public if KI or other protective actions are needed. For example, public health officials may advise you to remain in your home, school, or place of work (this is known as “shelter-in-place”) or to evacuate. You may also be told not to eat some foods and not to drink some beverages until a safe supply can be brought in from outside the affected area. Following the instructions given to you by these authorities can lower the amount of radioactive iodine that enters your body and lower the risk of serious injury to your thyroid gland.

How much KI should I take?

The FDA has approved two different forms of KI—tablets and liquid—that people can take by mouth after a nuclear radiation emergency. Tablets come in two strengths, 130 milligram (mg) and 65 mg. The tablets are scored so they may be cut into smaller pieces for lower doses. Each milliliter (mL) of the oral liquid solution contains 65 mg of KI.
According to the FDA, the following doses are appropriate to take after internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine:

Adults should take 130 mg (one 130 mg tablet OR two 65 mg tablets OR two mL of solution).
Women who are breastfeeding should take the adult dose of 130 mg.
Children between 3 and 18 years of age should take 65 mg (one 65 mg tablet OR 1 mL of solution). Children who are adult size (greater than or equal to 150 pounds) should take the full adult dose, regardless of their age.
Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 32 mg (½ of a 65 mg tablet OR ½ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing infants and children.
Newborns from birth to 1 month of age should be given 16 mg (¼ of a 65 mg tablet or ¼ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing newborn infants.

How often should I take KI?

A single dose of KI protects the thyroid gland for 24 hours. A one-time dose at the levels recommended in this fact sheet is usually all that is needed to protect the thyroid gland. In some cases, radioactive iodine might be in the environment for more than 24 hours. If that happens, local emergency management or public health officials may tell you to take one dose of KI every 24 hours for a few days. You should do this only on the advice of emergency management officials, public health officials, or your doctor. Avoid repeat dosing with KI for pregnant and breastfeeding women and newborn infants. Those individuals may need to be evacuated until levels of radioactive iodine in the environment fall.

Taking a higher dose of KI, or taking KI more often than recommended, does not offer more protection and can cause severe illness or death.

Medical conditions that may make it harmful to take KI

Taking KI may be harmful for some people because of the high levels of iodine in this medicine. You should not take KI if
• you know you are allergic to iodine (If you are unsure about this, consult your doctor. A seafood or shellfish allergy does not necessarily mean that you are allergic to iodine.) or
• you have certain skin disorders (such as dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis).

People with thyroid disease (for example, multinodular goiter, Graves’ disease, or autoimmune thyroiditis) may be treated with KI. This should happen under careful supervision of a doctor, especially if dosing lasts for more than a few days.

In all cases, talk to your doctor if you are not sure whether to take KI.

What are the possible risks and side effects of KI?

When public health or emergency management officials tell the public to take KI following a radiologic or nuclear event, the benefits of taking this drug outweigh the risks. This is true for all age groups. Some general side effects caused by KI may include intestinal upset, allergic reactions (possibly severe), rashes, and inflammation of the salivary glands.

When taken as recommended, KI causes only rare adverse health effects that specifically involve the thyroid gland. In general, you are more likely to have an adverse health effect involving the thyroid gland if you

take a higher than recommended dose of KI,
take the drug for several days, or
have pre-existing thyroid disease.

Newborn infants (less than 1 month old) who receive more than one dose of KI are at particular risk for developing a condition known as hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone levels that are too low). If not treated, hypothyroidism can cause brain damage. Infants who receive KI should have their thyroid hormone levels checked and monitored by a doctor. Avoid repeat dosing of KI to newborns.

Where can I get KI?

KI is available without a prescription. You should talk to your pharmacist to get KI and for directions about how to take it correctly. Your pharmacist can sell you KI brands that have been approved by the FDA.

My First Question: At what tipping point does the difference become so onerous and unconscionable to the poor majority that the seeds for revolution are firmly sown?

My Second Question: How close is the United States (one country among a number of others faced with the same disparity) to this theoretical "tipping point"?

My Third Question: What can be done to avert this type of "theoretical" calamity? The answer will not come from large monopolies or government "programs".

Personal Thank You Notes -- A Rare And Powerful Touch

If you're a hardened business-minded cynic, as I am, you'll probably think that this is going to be one of those sissy "conventional wisdom" puff piece articles. But you'd be wrong. So there.

Dear Friends, Readers, Colleagues and Fellow TNNWC Members:

A personal note (as a follow-through to a conversation or a meeting) is becoming increasingly rare. A personal thank you note is even rarer. This makes it all the more precious.

A thank-you note, whether it is a small hand-written sticky note or a more formalized email casts a gracious and dignified light on the sender.

When the Founder of TNNWC Group, Adam J.(whatever that stands for ) Kovitz mails me anything, he always encloses a small post-it note saying "thank you." It is one of the things that makes him outstanding in an increasingly hostile and de-personalized society. It is more than a gesture - it's a statement about the character of the sender. I have kept all of Adam's post-it notes [well, to be completely candid, it had occurred to me that they might fetch a high price at auction some day in the not-to-distant future when Adam comes to great fame and fortune...]

I have to start to send more thank you notes to people. They are a rare and personal touch that builds a stronger bridge of friendship and trust between the sender and the recipient. I know how wonderful I feel when I receive one.

I would suggest that you endeavor to do the same.

It will set us apart in an all-too-often indifferent world. It might even (at the risk of sounding mercenary) help win us better social and business relationships.

That is my entire message. If you'd like to go further, there is a personal story, but even if you stop right here, I've given you something to think about.

In fact, I'm going out to buy several quill pens and some fancy stationery right now.

The Story

Some years ago, during a particularly difficult time in my life, I decided to distract myself by delving into something new; something that would engage me physically, intellectually and emotionally.

I found my needed distraction when I decided, after interviewing several martial arts "masters," to study Jiu Jitsu under the instruction of Soke Joseph Droual of New York Martial Arts Hombu.

Soke (a term of mastery, which some translate to the "Founder," of a unique style, or "The Inheritor" of special teachings) intuitively knew what I needed, and trained me well. I thoroughly enjoyed our sessions. I earned my black belt due to our dedication to each other. Teaching and studying are two parts of a whole process - it truly requires a partnership between at least two persons to make learning possible. We established a close bond.

Over the years, our friendship has grown, and we have very often confided in eachother, exchanged warped jokes, groanworthy puns and musical metaphors. We speak on the telephone briefly (as we are both busy), but with incredible frequency.

Soke recently honored my Colleagues and myself by becoming a Member of TNNWC Group and one of our Advisors.

He is a master of four different martial arts, The Founder of The Internal Energy Plus System, a Member of the US Martial Arts Hall Of Fame, and an anti-bullying and anti-crime advocate and activist working in conjunction with Curtis Sliwa (of Guardian Angels fame), and a number of other organizations chartered to make children safer from the increasingly prevalent bullying and gang activities at schools, as well as organizations which are charged with the mission of empowering and protecting women from violence and abuse, such as NOWSA and has participated in such events as Voices For A Cause.

He's been interviewed numerous times on Long Island's WGBB Radio, as has had numerous mentions in The Long Islander, a popular Long Island newspaper.

This man of accomplishment recently took the time out to send me an email expressing his gratitute for our enduring friendship and for "all that I have done for him." It's ironic. From my perspective, he's done everything for me. I will not publish his letter here, as it was very personal, but I will publish my response:

Thanks are appreciated, but are highly unnecessary. You are my friend because we were brought together by a greater force to unite our efforts toward a greater and higher purpose.

If anything, I am indebted to you for teaching me some lessons about strategy and courage which have helped save my life (both literally and figuratively), and which have truly transformed me -- You were, and continue to be, the principal inspiration for the way in which I can take a stand in this world when others choose to retreat, to just turn the other way or to simply lie down.

Your teachings and trainings have changed me and have helped me to grow from within -- to strengthen my resolve and commitment to the things which I believe to be right.

Your training, insights, experiences and acumen have become a permanent part of the person whom I've become -- and I never could have accomplished so much without having walked into the dojo that day and asked you to be my teacher.

ANTI-RADICAL, ANTI-VIOLENT SHIFT IN THE VOLATILE MIDDLE EAST - TRULY REVOLUTIONARY.

A combination of factors, not the least of which is the rapid international adoption of internet and social media technologies, has led to an historically unprecedented upheaval of the civilian populations of Middle Eastern and North African nations against their established leadership.

This movement is not only significant in its implications for the future of the entire region, but it is crucially significant in the way that these protest movements are being led by the public-at-large in each of these nations, and not by military or clerical groups.

Further, these protests, for the most part, have been extraordinarily free of violence on the part of the protesters. The movements within each of the affected countries are massive in size, and are being championed by crowds of unarmed civilians wielding banners and signs bearing anti-government slogans and messages. While the governments of some of these nations have used police and military force against the protesters in order to quash their growing impetus, the protesters are growing in number, in collective voice, and acts of weaponless defiance.

May these protesters win their freedom from oppressive, entrenched regimes – and may they win with minimal bloodshed and casualties among their numbers. There are many in this world who might learn by their stunning example of the power of numbers, and of the potential for non-radicalized change…a change to government by and for the People.

As an American citizen (as well as an Internationalist), I am greatly encouraged to see some of the signs of awakening democracy. I am nostalgic, if not more than a little wistful, as well.

A Hard-Wired Culture Of Fear and Ignorance Keeps Humankind Trapped In A State Of Perpetual Unrest

We must transcend our fears and overcome our ignorance if we are to survive and advance as a species. We need less class and ethnic warfare and more open dialogue. Humanity cannot continue along its current course. -DC

Note: I have a friend overseas who is a fellow Internationalist and a great enthusiast at the prospect of joining the TNNWC Team and working to build TNNWC Group’s International Connections Service Division. He recently had to cancel a Skype conference due to civil unrest in the region of the country he calls home. This state of affairs frightens me – not just for the well-being of my friend and future teammate – but for the horrifying fact that this type of civil unrest (an oxymoron) is actually prevalent throughout most of the world. It wreaks special havoc on emerging economies. My letter (with some edits for reasons of security) follows for your information. I felt compelled to share my feelings about this matter with everyone willing to take a moment to read this letter to him.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, and for the safety and security of your loved ones. Please get in touch as soon as you are able, either by telephone or via email to let us know your status.

We are eagerly awaiting an opportunity to combine forces and resources with you and to resume our discussions for furtherance; but your safety comes first.

It would seem that the world needs better communication and more collaboration - we will never advance as a species while we still persecute and brutalize each other. There must come a time in this world when we seek, as Human Beings and evolved souls, to explore and celebrate the things that we share in common, i.e., those great things that unite us, instead of battling over those lesser things that divide us.

Until such time as our level of social evolution can somehow "catch up" to our level of technological advancement, and until such time as our empathy can exceed our all-consuming avarice and paranoia, we will be conducting ourselves like frightened children lost in a forest.

Above and Beyond - Do You Have What Is Required To Be Part Of An Entrepreneurial Team?

Dear Friends, TNNWC Members, Fellow Entrepreneurs and Frustrated Leaders of Emerging Enterprises:

One of the first, but most challenging jobs of championing an entrepreneurial enterprise is the dilemma of choosing and assembling a team. Assuming that you have some brialliant and commercially viable ideas, and the ability to articulate them, you are going to have to sift through hordes of "helpful" people in order to find the right players. The qualifying questions that will be running through your weary and wary mind will include some of these:

1. Does this person have a skill which we require? Is this persons level of skill adequate? Is this person capable and complementary to the team's objectives?

2. Is this person trustworthy, honorable and reliable?

3. Is this person purely a "talker - i.e., a member of the philosophical and cerebral elite" or is he or she a "roll up your shirtsleeves and get it done" person? If everybody on the team is working the soil, is your prospective team member "above it all," either because he or she is lazy, too egomaniacal, or too obsessed with enjoying the harvest that is being sown and reaped by his or her teammates? Someone who likes to stay away from all of the dirt and detail, small-time operational problem-solving, and things that are not included in his/her "Executive Job Description" is not so much an entrepreneur as an opportunist.

4. Is this person willing to be an active participant in the venture, and take the journey with you and your team?

5. Is this person socially skilled enough that he/ she can truly become an integrated part of the team? Does this person know how to communicate, to listen and to openly share?

6. Does this person have a hidden (or obvious!) personal agenda that he or she is merely using your team to help him or her to achieve? Does it conflict with your team's agenda, or does it coincide and harmonize with your plan for the team?

7. How would you feel about introducing this person to a third party as your partner or teammate? This question goes straight to your gut. You can either build yourself up or destroy your own reputation by those people whom you choose to keep company with -- you are judged by the company you keep. [This is sad, but true]

Your choice of teammates is actually your choice of Human Capital - the most important assets in the world. If these assets aren't truly adequate, you're going to fail. Tainted assets and attitudes will destroy or dissuade your very best Human assets if you put them together on the same ship. Choose your team members well.

Each team member should not only be a helpful addition to the team's collective competence and synergistic potential, but should be interested in the success of the whole venture and in the success of all of its participants.

NOTE: An aside to those of you whose skill sets are truly centered around any or all of the following "personal and professional assets":

1. You want to wait for the best opportunity for yourself, and you want to join the team as one of your options. After all...it might get funded, and your stock could be valuable if you just hang around;

2. You are good at proposing ideas for others to execute, but do not like to participate in the raw sweat work of getting things started;

3. You do not really believe in either the team's objective, your teammates' abilities, or the leader of your team;

4. You are ggod at delegating and instructing, but you do not want to "put yourself out on a limb" to negotiate as necessary and to recruit capable people to delegate this work to;

5. You generally have a "let's wait and see attitude."

My message to those of you (the vast majority of the population) who feel a resonance with the five characteristics listed immediately above should not be entrepreneurs. If you are fortunate enough to have a high-payiong trade or profession, stay with that. If you don't have either of those advantages, put on your best smile, polish those shoes and prepare a batch of resumes at Kinko's - some company might have sufficient funds to expend on sustaining you, and you might be hired! (too bad about the rough economy though). Some government "employment opportunities" and even financial aid might be worth looking into.

On a personal note, if you are a member of the vast majority of the persons described above, please do not waste your time, or anybody else's, on trying to take up space on an entrepreneurial team. You are probably not an entrepreneur, or a true team player.

Most importantly, please don't attempt to engage me in conversation -- I am far too busy working to create value for my teammates and myself. I might even be out there in the field helping my teammmates work the soil. As a leader, my job is to serve my team. As a teammate, each member of my team is working to serve all of the other team members.

Nothing less would be acceptable to either my teammmates or myself.

Leadership Is Actually Quite Simple...

"Leadership? Simple! Inspire and unite your team with your vision and charisma; then expedite goal attainment while minimizing conflict." - Douglas Castle

The only tools that you require (and you can get them at almost any hardware store or delicatessen) are these:

1. A vision, and the ability to communicate it to others (and sometimes to refresh their memories) so that it is highly visible and "comes to life" in their hearts as well as in their heads.

2. The ability to demonstrate how the achievement of your vision benefits each and all of the members of the team, and how each team member will be making an important and emotionally-satisfying contribution for the benefit of all.

3. The ability to draw a plan which includes input from each member as well as a vital role to be played on the part of each member. In the planning process, you must serve as a moderator and a mediator (while maintaining focus and intensity) so that the plan produced will be the product of every team member's work.

4. The energy to drive the entire team toward the objective, and to consistently keep them on course even when they are fatigued, distracted or disillusioned, or while they are in conflict with the team or with individual members within the team.

5. The wisdom of King Solomon to make decisions which resolve conflicts without creating lasting bitterness, the inclination toward sabotage of the objective, and which minimize ongoing rivalries or enmity between any two parties, or between any one member and the entire group. You must be a warrior, a vigilant observer of subtle shifts in mood and momentum, and you must be perceived as a fair and reasonable judge and resolver of disputes.

Good luck to all of my friends and colleagues who aspire to be great leaders. Being a great leader requires more sensitivity, skill and balance than walking a greased, gossamer-thin tightrope without a net underneath you. You may be a hero, but you may be hated just as easily. You will be judged not only on your ability to get the team to the objective -- you will be judged on every decision that you make along the incremental process to goal attainment. You will be terribly lonely. You will feel infinitely responsible, but you will always be the ultimate source of blame. It will age you, and it will stretch you beyond any limits which you thought you had - and then stretch you further, until you fit the challenge.

The rewards will ultimately be quiet and introspective - you will have the knowledge, deep within you, of knowing that you lead the charge to achieve something that chnaged the world, or some aspect of it, for the better of the people for whom you felt responsible.

Leaders are necessary, but being in a position of leadership is an appalling responsibility for a mortal.

My only advice to you is this: Do not be a leader unless something needs to be done and you are consumed by the desire to get it done. It is a calling and a compulsion, much more than an opportunity or a social or business position. On occasion, I have thought of leadership as a punishment or exercise necessary in order for you, as a person, to evolve into somone or something better.

International Leadership - The New Paradigm at 14th January, 2011

Dear Friends, Futurists, and Internationalists:

During the course of these past three years, the entire world has seen and experienced an economic tsunami, a crisis of trust and faith in the most venerable institutions, and a growing divide between those few powerful persons in positions of authority and those many persons who constitute the masses.

The masses have universally become disenfranchised and distrustful of those in positions of authority and power. The members of the suffering masses are feeling either helpless or restless -- but few are trustful or happy with the status quo.

There is a new tie that binds all of those citizens of The Internationalist Community, The Global Village and the Human species -- we are all sharing a crisis of confidence, and a lack of qualified, trustworthy leaders with vision and true integrity.

There is a high probability that some of those currently in power, those currently insulated and ensconsed within the protective palaces which they have built by the sweat, toil and suffering of the barely-subsisting majority will be displaced within these next one to three years.

New leaders will no longer be able to depend upon sovereignty, patriotism, empty rhetoric and hate-mongering to unite the masses behind them and to keep their power. The Internet, the entropic economy and the mysterious changes in the dynamics of the weather have made those safeguards of bygone times a virtual (pun intended) impossibility.

New leaders, in addition to technological mastery and expert advice, will be required to exhibit qualities which the older, dying "guardians by divine right" have never had to bring to the fore.

New Leadership will have to demonstrate a genuine alignment with the populations for whom they are responsible, as well as those same populations to whom they will now have to be accountable. New leaders will have to serve their followers instead of merely stealing votes and money from them based upon half-truths and blind faith.

There will still be a use for weaponry and shows of military strength -- but these will now have to be tempered with a heartfelt passion for their followers, as well as for the causes, organizations and nations which these leaders will lead. There will be a need for empathy, as well as a desire to dominate and control.

New leaders will be tasked with not only leading, but with caring for their constitutents, adherents and followers. The metaphorical muscle of the heart, long neglected but often abused, will have to be strong in these leaders. In sum:

Dear Colleagues, Members, Friends, and World-At Large:

Very few people give thanks and praise to the people who are most important to them. That is a sad thing.

Just as sadly, too many people either a) do not feel worthy of praise, or b) are not doing work or demonstrating any of the attributes that would make them praiseworthy... some people pretend (or are actually conditioned) not to really care. Praise, when sincere and direct, is no less important than any other form of compensation. I believe it is crucial.

I wanted to take a moment to make an example of my faithful friend, colleague and the Director Of Operations and Program Compliance Officer of TNNWC Group, LLC. - Mr. Thomas C. Kern, Jr. We laughingly and lovingly refer to him (when newcomers ask us "What exactly does Thomas Kern do?") as being our own Scotty in the engine room of the U.S.S. Enterprise, of STAR TREK fame. A better question for them to ask (in order to get a shorter answer) might be: "What doesn't Thomas Kern do?"

Dear Friends and Worthy Opponents:

My unsolicited advice to everyone (without exceptions or exclusions), includes 2 Rules To Living A Much Better Life. Learn and follow these simple suggestions, and you will enjoy a happier, much more productive life. Fail to learn and follow these suggestions at your own peril.

1) If you have a conflict or an issue with a person, take the time to communicate with that person directly, and do not operate through agents, gossip, or third parties. Communicate your own message directly to the person with whom you have a conflict or issue, and it is likely that either a) the issue can be resolved quickly, or, b) if this is not possible, you can begin to plan for the best alternative while preparing for the worst from the person whom you've confronted. Your most critical communications in life will be thoses that are one-to-one and direct;

2) Do not say anything to anyone which you would not want the entire world to know about, or to have attributed to you as the one who said it. Odds are that backbiting, insults and other "off-color" things which you say about someone else in "in private" will be repeated to some other party or parties at some time. When you speak, pretend that the videos are rolling, the microphones are on, and that the van parked halfway down your block is loaded with people from some secret government agency, monitoring your words and actions in the process of collecting testimony to use against you.

This is not paranoia...it is pragmatism. You can sign your own conviction, death warrant or epitaph by having your words heard or repeated to a third party in a different context. Do not be caught in a lie, or get yourself branded as a whiner, a snitch or a bigot. Two added advantages are that it is a) easiest to remember the truth and what you actually did and said, and b) you can never, ever be surprised by anyone using your own words or actions against you.

Best of all, living by these two rules will assure that you will always be thinking and speaking with sincerity, clarity and accountability.
