Easing Back Labor Using an Exercise Ball

Exercise balls or birth balls as doulas call them, are used a lot during labor, especially if a client is experiencing pain or intense pressure in her lower back. This video shows one technique that alleviates discomfort and can help make room for the baby to rotate into an ideal position.

YourDoulaBag.com sells a variety of fabric covers that make carrying your birth ball much easier, which makes it a snap to transport to and from the hospital. This video shows the laboring woman kneeling on a pad. You may wish to use a pillow or get a gardening pad of your own. In a pinch, a folded towel works well too.

After the birth of my second child (my first natural birth), a friend asked me to stand in for her husband during the birth of her child if he was out of town at the time of labor. I got so excited and then realized that I was acting as a doula. Her husband made it for the birth, and I was so disappointed that I decided to pursue being a doula as a profession. The more I learned about the profession the more I realized that it is my passion.
